  2 G2532 And G1510.8.3 it will be G3752 whenever G1448 you should approach G3588 to the G4171 war, G2532 that G4331 [3drawing near G3588 1the G2409 2priest] G2980 shall speak G3588 to the G2992 people, G2532 and G2046 shall say G4314 to G1473 them,
  3 G191 Hear, G* O Israel! G1473 You G4198 go G4594 today G1519 to G4171 war G1909 with G3588   G2190 your enemies; G1473   G3361 do not G1590 loosen G3588   G2588 your heart; G1473   G3361 do not G5399 fear G3366 nor G2352 be devastated, G3366 nor G1578 turn aside G575 from G4383 their face!   4 G3754 For G2962 the lord G3588   G2316 your God, G1473   G3588 the one G4313 going forth G3326 with G1473 you, G4899.1 he shall join in war with G1473 you G3588 against G2190 your enemies, G1473   G2532 and G1295 he shall preserve G1473 you.
  5 G2532 And G2980 [3shall speak G3588 1the G1122 2scribes] G4314 to G3588 the G2992 people, G3004 saying, G5100 Who is G3588 the G444 man G3588   G3618 building G3614 [2house G2537 1a new], G2532 and G3756 did not G1457 dedicate G1473 it? G4198 Let him go G2532 and G654 return G1519 to G3588   G3614 his house! G1473   G3361 lest G599 he die G1722 in G3588 the G4171 war, G2532 and G444 [2man G2087 1another] G1457 shall dedicate G1473 it.
  6 G2532 And G5100 Who is G3588 the G444 man G3748 whoever G5452 plants G290 a vineyard, G2532 and G3756 was not G2165 glad G1537 from G1473 it? G4198 Let him go, G2532 and G654 let him return G1519 to G3588   G3614 his house! G1473   G3361 lest G599 he should die G1722 in G3588 the G4171 war, G2532 and G444 [2man G2087 1another] G2165 be glad G1537 from out of G1473 his labor .
  7 G2532 And G5100 who is G3588 the G444 man G3748 who G3423 has espoused G1135 a woman, G2532 and G3756 did not G2983 take G1473 her? G4198 Let him go, G2532 and G654 let him return G1519 to G3588   G3614 his house!   8 G2532 And G4369 [3shall add G3588 1the G1122 2scribes] G2980 to speak G4314 to G3588 the G2992 people, G2532 and G2046 shall say, G5100 Who is G3588 the G444 man, G3588 the one G5399 fearing G2532 and G1169 timid G3588 in the G2588 heart? G4198 Let him go, G2532 and G654 let him return G1519 to G3588   G3614 his house! G1473   G2443 that G3361 he should not G1167.1 make timid G3588 the G2588 heart G3588   G80 of his brother, G1473   G5618 as G3588   G1473 he.
  9 G2532 And G1510.8.3 it will be G3752 whenever G3973 [3should cease G3588 1the G1122 2scribes] G2980 speaking G4314 to G3588 the G2992 people, G2532 that G2525 they shall place G758 rulers G3588 of the G4756 military G4285 taking lead G3588 of the G2992 people.
  10 G1437 And if G1161   G4334 you should come forward G4314 to G4172 a city G1606.2 to wage war against G1473 it, G2532 that G2564 you should call them forth G1473   G3326 with G1515 peace.
  11 G2532 And G1510.8.3 it shall be G1437 if G3303 then G1516 they should peaceably G611 answer G1473 you, G2532 and G455 open G1473 to you, G1510.8.3 it shall be G3956 that all G3588 the G2992 people G3588   G2147 being found G1722 in G1473 it G1510.8.6 shall be G1473 [2to you G5409.2 1tributaries], G2532 and G5255 subjects to you.   12 G1437 But if G1161   G3361 they should not G5219 obey G1473 you, G2532 and G4160 should make G4314 [2against G1473 3you G4171 1war], G2532 and G4027.2 you shall besiege G1473 it,
  13 G2532 and G3860 [3shall deliver G1473 4it G2962 1 the lord G3588   G2316 2your God] G1473   G1519 into G3588   G5495 your hands, G1473   G2532 then G3960 you shall strike G3956 every G732.1 male G1473 of it G1722 by G5408 carnage G3162 of the sword,
  14 G4133 except G3588 the G1135 women G2532 and G3588 the G643.1 belongings. G2532 And G3956 all G3588 the G2934 cattle, G2532 and G3956 all G3745 as much G302 as G5224 exists G1722 in G3588 the G4172 city, G2532 and G3956 all G3588 the G534.1 chattel G4307.1 you shall despoil G4572 for yourself, G2532 and G2068 you shall eat G3956 all G3588 the G4307.2 plunder G3588   G2190 of your enemy, G1473   G3739 whom G2962 the lord G3588   G2316 your God G1473   G1325 gives G1473 to you.
  15 G3779 Thus G4160 you shall do G3956 for all G3588 the G4172 cities G3588   G3112 [2far away G1510.6 1being] G575 from G1473 you G4970 exceedingly, G3739 which G3780 are not G575 from G3588 the G4172 cities G3588   G1484 of these nations G3778   G3739 which G2962 the lord G3588   G2316 your God G1473   G1325 gives G1473 to you G2816 to inherit G3588   G1093 their land.   16 G2400 But behold, G1161   G575 from G3588 the G4172 cities G3588   G1484 of these nations G3778   G3739 which G3588 the G2962 lord G3588   G2316 your God G1473   G1325 gives G1473 to you G2816 to inherit G3588   G1093 their land, G1473   G3756 you shall not G2221 take alive G3956 any one G1709 breathing.
  17 G235 But G332 you shall devote them to consumption -- G1473   G3588 the G* Hittite, G2532 and G3588 the G* Amorite, G2532 and G3588 the G* Canaanite, G2532 and G* Perizzite, G2532 and G* Hivite, G2532 and G* Jebusite, G2532 and G* Gergesite; G3739 in which G5158 manner G1781 [3gave charge G1473 4to you G2962 1 the lord G3588   G2316 2your God]; G1473  
  18 G2443 that G3361 they should not G1321 teach G1473 you G4160 to do G3956 all G3588   G946 their abominations, G1473   G3745 as many as G4160 they made G3588 unto G2316 their gods, G1473   G2532 that G264 you shall sin G1726 before G2962 the lord G3588   G2316 your God. G1473  
  19 G1437 But if G1161   G4027.2 you should besiege G4012 around G4172 a city G2250 [2days G4183 1many] G1606.2 to wage war G1473 against it G1519 for G2641.3 taking G1473 it, G3756 you shall not G1842 utterly destroy G3588   G1186 its trees G1473   G1911 by putting G1909 upon G1473 them G4604 an iron axe; G235 but G575 of G1473 it G2068 you shall eat, G1473 [3it down G1161 1but G3756 2you shall not cut]; G1581   G3361 nor is G444 a man G3588 [2the G3586 3tree G3588   G1722 4in G3588 5the G1409.1 6grove G1525 1to enter unto] G575 from G4383 your presence G1473   G1519 for G3588 the G5482 siege mound?
  20 G235 But G3588 the G3586 tree G3739 which G1987 you know G3754 that G3756 [2not G2589.6 3fruit-bearing G1510.2.3 1it is], G3778 this G3645 you shall annihilate, G2532 and G1581 you shall cut it, G2532 and G3618 shall build G5481.1 a siege mound G1909 at G3588 the G4172 city, G3748 whichever G4160 makes G4314 [2against G1473 3you G3588   G4171 1war], G2193 until G302 whenever G3860 it should be delivered up.

  3 H559 ואמר And shall say H413 אלהם unto H8085 שׁמע them, Hear, H3478 ישׂראל O Israel, H859 אתם ye H7131 קרבים approach H3117 היום this day H4421 למלחמה unto battle H5921 על against H341 איביכם your enemies: H408 אל let not H7401 ירך faint, H3824 לבבכם your hearts H408 אל not, H3372 תיראו fear H408 ואל and do not H2648 תחפזו tremble, H408 ואל neither H6206 תערצו be ye terrified H6440 מפניהם׃ because of
  4 H3588 כי For H3068 יהוה the LORD H430 אלהיכם your God H1980 ההלך he that goeth H5973 עמכם with H3898 להלחם you, to fight H5973 לכם עם for you against H341 איביכם your enemies, H3467 להושׁיע to save H853 אתכם׃  
  5 H1696 ודברו shall speak H7860 השׁטרים And the officers H413 אל unto H5971 העם the people, H559 לאמר saying, H4310 מי What H376 האישׁ man H834 אשׁר that H1129 בנה hath built H1004 בית house, H2319 חדשׁ a new H3808 ולא and hath not H2596 חנכו dedicated H1980 ילך it? let him go H7725 וישׁב and return H1004 לביתו to his house, H6435 פן lest H4191 ימות he die H4421 במלחמה in the battle, H376 ואישׁ man H312 אחר and another H2596 יחנכנו׃ dedicate
  6 H4310 ומי And what H376 האישׁ man H834 אשׁר that H5193 נטע hath planted H3754 כרם a vineyard, H3808 ולא and hath not H2490 חללו eaten H1980 ילך of it? let him go H7725 וישׁב and return H1004 לביתו unto his house, H6435 פן lest H4191 ימות he die H4421 במלחמה in the battle, H376 ואישׁ man H312 אחר and another H2490 יחללנו׃ eat
  7 H4310 ומי And what H376 האישׁ man H834 אשׁר that H781 ארשׂ hath betrothed H802 אשׁה a wife, H3808 ולא and hath not H3947 לקחה taken H1980 ילך her? let him go H7725 וישׁב and return H1004 לביתו unto his house, H6435 פן lest H4191 ימות he die H4421 במלחמה in the battle, H376 ואישׁ man H312 אחר and another H3947 יקחנה׃ take
  8 H3254 ויספו further H7860 השׁטרים And the officers H1696 לדבר shall speak H413 אל unto H5971 העם the people, H559 ואמרו and they shall say, H4310 מי What H376 האישׁ man H3373 הירא fearful H7390 ורך and fainthearted? H3824 הלבב and fainthearted? H1980 ילך let him go H7725 וישׁב and return H1004 לביתו unto his house, H3808 ולא lest H4549 ימס faint H853 את   H3824 לבב heart H251 אחיו his brethren's H3824 כלבבו׃ as well as his heart.
  9 H1961 והיה And it shall be, H3615 ככלת have made an end H7860 השׁטרים when the officers H1696 לדבר of speaking H413 אל unto H5971 העם the people, H6485 ופקדו that they shall make H8269 שׂרי captains H6635 צבאות of the armies H7218 בראשׁ to lead H5971 העם׃ the people.
  10 H3588 כי When H7126 תקרב thou comest nigh H413 אל unto H5892 עיר a city H3898 להלחם to fight H5921 עליה against H7121 וקראת it, then proclaim H413 אליה unto H7965 לשׁלום׃ peace
  11 H1961 והיה And it shall be, H518 אם if H7965 שׁלום of peace, H6030 תענך it make thee answer H6605 ופתחה and open H1961 לך והיה unto thee, then it shall be, H3605 כל all H5971 העם the people H4672 הנמצא found H1961 בה יהיו therein shall be H4522 לך למס tributaries H5647 ועבדוך׃ unto thee, and they shall serve
  12 H518 ואם And if H3808 לא it will make no peace H7999 תשׁלים it will make no peace H5973 עמך with H6213 ועשׂתה thee, but will make H5973 עמך against H4421 מלחמה war H6696 וצרת thee, then thou shalt besiege H5921 עליה׃ thee, then thou shalt besiege
  13 H5414 ונתנה hath delivered H3068 יהוה And when the LORD H430 אלהיך thy God H3027 בידך it into thine hands, H5221 והכית thou shalt smite H853 את   H3605 כל every H2138 זכורה male H6310 לפי thereof with the edge H2719 חרב׃ of the sword:
  14 H7535 רק But H802 הנשׁים the women, H2945 והטף and the little ones, H929 והבהמה and the cattle, H3605 וכל and all H834 אשׁר that H1961 יהיה is H5892 בעיר in the city, H3605 כל all H7998 שׁללה the spoil H962 תבז thereof, shalt thou take H398 לך ואכלת unto thyself; and thou shalt eat H853 את   H7998 שׁלל the spoil H341 איביך of thine enemies, H834 אשׁר which H5414 נתן hath given H3068 יהוה the LORD H430 אלהיך׃ thy God
  15 H3651 כן Thus H6213 תעשׂה shalt thou do H3605 לכל unto all H5892 הערים the cities H7350 הרחקת far off H4480 ממך from H3966 מאד very H834 אשׁר thee, which H3808 לא not H5892 מערי of the cities H1471 הגוים nations. H428 האלה of these H2007 הנה׃  
  16 H7535 רק But H5892 מערי of the cities H5971 העמים people, H428 האלה of these H834 אשׁר which H3068 יהוה the LORD H430 אלהיך thy God H5414 נתן doth give H5159 לך נחלה thee an inheritance, H3808 לא nothing H2421 תחיה thou shalt save alive H3605 כל nothing H5397 נשׁמה׃ that breatheth:
  17 H3588 כי But H2763 החרם thou shalt utterly destroy H2763 תחרימם thou shalt utterly destroy H2850 החתי them; the Hittites, H567 והאמרי and the Amorites, H3669 הכנעני the Canaanites, H6522 והפרזי and the Perizzites, H2340 החוי the Hivites, H2983 והיבוסי and the Jebusites; H834 כאשׁר as H6680 צוך hath commanded H3068 יהוה the LORD H430 אלהיך׃ thy God
  18 H4616 למען   H834 אשׁר which H3808 לא you not H3925 ילמדו they teach H853 אתכם   H6213 לעשׂות to do H3605 ככל after all H8441 תועבתם their abominations, H834 אשׁר   H6213 עשׂו they have done H430 לאלהיהם unto their gods; H2398 וחטאתם so should ye sin H3068 ליהוה against the LORD H430 אלהיכם׃ your God.
  19 H3588 כי When H6696 תצור thou shalt besiege H413 אל thou shalt besiege H5892 עיר a city H3117 ימים time, H7227 רבים a long H3898 להלחם in making war H5921 עליה against H8610 לתפשׂה it to take H3808 לא it, thou shalt not H7843 תשׁחית destroy H853 את   H6086 עצה the trees H5080 לנדח thereof by forcing H5921 עליו against H1631 גרזן an axe H3588 כי them: for H4480 ממנו of H398 תאכל thou mayest eat H853 ואתו   H3808 לא them, and thou shalt not H3772 תכרת   H3588 כי (for H120 האדם man's H6086 עץ the tree H7704 השׂדה of the field H935 לבא   H6440 מפניך   H4692 במצור׃ in the siege:
  20 H7535 רק Only H6086 עץ the trees H834 אשׁר which H3045 תדע thou knowest H3588 כי that H3808 לא not H6086 עץ trees H3978 מאכל for meat, H1931 הוא they H853 אתו   H7843 תשׁחית thou shalt destroy H3772 וכרת and cut them down; H1129 ובנית and thou shalt build H4692 מצור bulwarks H5921 על against H5892 העיר the city H834 אשׁר that H1931 הוא that H6213 עשׂה maketh H5973 עמך with H4421 מלחמה war H5704 עד thee, until H3381 רדתה׃ it be subdued.
Geneva(i) 1 When thou shalt go forth to warre against thine enemies, and shalt see horses and charets, and people moe then thou, be not afrayde of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt. 2 And when ye are come neere vnto the battel, then the Priest shall come forth to speake vnto the people, 3 And shall say vnto them, Heare, O Israel: ye are come this day vnto battell against your enemies: let not your heartes faynt, neither feare, nor be amased, nor adread of them. 4 For ye Lord your God goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, and to saue you 5 And let the officers speake vnto the people, saying, What man is there that hath buylt a new house, and hath not dedicate it? let him go and returne to his house, least he dye in the battel, and an other man dedicate it. 6 And what man is there that hath planted a vineyarde, and hath not eaten of the fruite? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, least he die in the battel, and another eate the fruite. 7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, lest he die in the battell, and another man take her. 8 And let the officers speake further vnto the people, and say, Whosoeuer is afrayde and faynt hearted, let him go and returne vnto his house, least his brethrens heart faynt like his heart. 9 And after that the officers haue made an ende of speaking vnto the people, they shall make captaines of the armie to gouerne the people. 10 When thou commest neere vnto a citie to fight against it, thou shalt offer it peace. 11 And if it answere thee againe peaceably, and open vnto thee, then let all the people that is founde therein, be tributaries vnto thee, and serue thee. 12 But if it will make no peace with thee, but make war against thee, then shalt thou besiege it. 13 And the Lord thy God shall deliuer it into thine handes, and thou shalt smite all the males thereof with the edge of the sworde. 14 Onely the women, and the children, and the cattel, and all that is in the citie, euen all the spoyle thereof shalt thou take vnto thy selfe, and shalt eate the spoyle of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath giuen thee. 15 Thus shalt thou do vnto all ye cities, which are a great way off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations here. 16 But of the cities of this people, which the Lord thy God shall giue thee to inherite, thou shalt saue no person aliue, 17 But shalt vtterly destroy them: to wit, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee, 18 That they teache you not to doe after all their abominations, which they haue done vnto their gods, and so ye should sinne against the Lord your God. 19 When thou hast besieged a citie long time, and made warre against it to take it, destroy not the trees therof, by smiting an axe into them: for thou mayest eate of them: therfore thou shalt not cut them downe to further thee in the siege, (for the tree of the field is mans life) 20 Onely those trees, which thou knowest are not for meate, those shalt thou destroy and cut downe, and make fortes against the citie that maketh warre with thee, vntil thou subdue it.

  17 H2763 [H8687] But thou shalt utterly H2763 [H8686] destroy H2850 them; namely, the Hittites H567 , and the Amorites H3669 , the Canaanites H6522 , and the Perizzites H2340 , the Hivites H2983 , and the Jebusites H3068 ; as the LORD H430 thy God H6680 [H8765] hath commanded thee:
  18 H3925 [H8762] That they may not teach H6213 [H8800] you to do H8441 after all their abominations H6213 [H8804] , which they have done H430 to their gods H2398 [H8804] ; so should ye sin H3068 against the LORD H430 your God.

  20 H6086 Only the trees H3045 [H8799] which thou knowest H6086 that they are not trees H3978 for food H7843 [H8686] , thou shalt destroy H3772 [H8804] and cut them down H1129 [H8804] ; and thou shalt build H4692 bulwarks H5892 against the city H6213 [H8802] that maketh H4421 war H3381 [H8800] with thee, until it shall be subdued.
YLT(i) 1 `When thou goest out to battle against thine enemy, and hast seen horse and chariot--a people more numerous than thou--thou art not afraid of them, for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who is bringing thee up out of the land of Egypt; 2 and it hath been, in your drawing near unto the battle, that the priest hath come nigh, and spoken unto the people, 3 and said unto them, Hear, Israel, ye are drawing near to-day to battle against your enemies, let not your hearts be tender, fear not, nor make haste, nor be terrified at their presence, 4 for Jehovah your God is He who is going with you, to fight for you with your enemies--to save you. 5 `And the authorities have spoken unto the people, saying, Who is the man that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? --let him go and turn back to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man dedicate it. 6 `And who is the man that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not made it common? --let him go and turn back to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man make it common. 7 `And who is the man that hath betrothed a woman, and hath not taken her? --let him go and turn back to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man take her. 8 `And the authorities have added to speak unto the people, and said, Who is the man that is afraid and tender of heart? --let him go and turn back to his house, and the heart of his brethren doth not melt like his heart; 9 and it hath come to pass as the authorities finish to speak unto the people, that they have appointed princes of the hosts at the head of the people.
10 `When thou drawest near unto a city to fight against it, then thou hast called unto it for Peace, 11 and it hath been, if Peace it answer thee, and hath opened to thee, then it hath come to pass--all the people who are found in it are to thee for tributaries, and have served thee. 12 `And if it doth not make peace with thee, and hath made with thee war, then thou hast laid siege against it, 13 and Jehovah thy God hath given it into thy hand, and thou hast smitten every male of it by the mouth of the sword. 14 Only, the women, and the infants, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, all its spoil, thou dost seize for thyself, and thou hast eaten the spoil of thine enemies which Jehovah thy God hath given to thee. 15 So thou dost do to all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16 `Only, of the cities of these peoples which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee for an inheritance, thou dost not keep alive any breathing; 17 for thou dost certainly devote the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee, 18 so that they teach you not to do according to all their abominations which they have done to their gods, and ye have sinned against Jehovah your God. 19 `When thou layest siege unto a city many days, to fight against it, to capture it, thou dost not destroy its trees to force an axe against them, for of them thou dost eat, and them thou dost not cut down--for man's is the tree of the field--to go in at thy presence in the siege. 20 Only, the tree, which thou knowest that it is not a fruit-tree, it thou dost destroy, and hast cut down, and hast built a bulwark against the city which is making with thee war till thou hast subdued it.
ASV(i) 1 When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them; for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 2 And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, 3 and shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; fear not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them; 4 for Jehovah your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. 5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. 6 And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof. 7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. 8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethrens heart melt as his heart. 9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people. 10 When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. 11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that are found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee. 12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: 13 and when Jehovah thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: 14 but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which Jehovah thy God hath given thee. 15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16 But of the cities of these peoples, that Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth; 17 but thou shalt utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee; 18 that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so would ye sin against Jehovah your God. 19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee? 20 Only the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
