1 Samuel Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill-country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:

1 H259 Now there was a certain H376 man H7436 of Ramathaim-zophim, H2022 of the hill-country H669 of Ephraim, H8034 and his name H511 was Elkanah, H1121 the son H3395 of Jeroham, H1121 the son H453 of Elihu, H1121 the son H8459 of Tohu, H1121 the son H6689 of Zuph, H673 an Ephraimite:

2 H8147 and he had two H802 wives; H8034 the name H259 of the one H2584 was Hannah, H8034 and the name H8145 of other H6444 Peninnah: H6444 and Peninnah H3206 had children, H2584 but Hannah H3206 had no children.

3 H1931 And this H376 man H5927 went up H5892 out of his city H3117 from year to year H7812 to worship H2076 and to sacrifice H3068 unto Jehovah H6635 of hosts H7887 in Shiloh. H8147 And the two H1121 sons H5941 of Eli, H2652 Hophni H6372 and Phinehas, H3548 priests H3068 unto Jehovah, were there.

4 H3117 And when the day H511 came that Elkanah H2076 sacrificed, H5414 he gave H6444 to Peninnah H802 his wife, H1121 and to all her sons H1323 and her daughters, H4490 portions:

5 H2584 but unto Hannah H5414 he gave H259 a H639 double H4490 portion; H157 for he loved H2584 Hannah, H3068 but Jehovah H5462 had shut up H7358 her womb.

6 H6869 And her rival H3707 provoked H3708 her sore, H7481 to make her fret, H3068 because Jehovah H5462 had shut H1157 up H7358 her womb.

7 H6213 And as he did H8141 so year H8141 by year, H1767 when H5927 she went up H1004 to the house H3068 of Jehovah, H3707 so she provoked H1058 her; therefore she wept, H398 and did not eat.

8 H511 And Elkanah H376 her husband H559 said H2584 unto her, Hannah, H1058 why weepest H398 thou? and why eatest H3824 thou not? and why is thy heart H3415 grieved? H2896 am not I better H6235 to thee than ten H1121 sons?

9 H2584 So Hannah H6965 rose up H310 after H398 they had eaten H7887 in Shiloh, H310 and after H8354 they had drunk. H5941 Now Eli H3548 the priest H3427 was sitting H3678 upon his seat H4201 by the door-post H1964 of the temple H3068 of Jehovah.

10 H4751 And she was in bitterness H5315 of soul, H6419 and prayed H3068 unto Jehovah, H1058 and wept H1058 sore.

11 H5087 And she vowed H5088 a vow, H559 and said, H3068 O Jehovah H6635 of hosts, H7200 if thou wilt indeed H7200 look H6040 on the affliction H519 of thy handmaid, H2142 and remember H7911 me, and not forget H519 thy handmaid, H5414 but wilt give H519 unto thy handmaid H582 a man-child, H2233 H5414 then I will give H3068 him unto Jehovah H3117 all the days H2416 of his life, H4177 and there shall no razor H5927 come H7218 upon his head.

12 H7235 And it came to pass, as she continued H6419 praying H6440 before H3068 Jehovah, H5941 that Eli H8104 marked H6310 her mouth.

13 H2584 Now Hannah, H1696 she spake H3820 in her heart; H8193 only her lips H5128 moved, H6963 but her voice H8085 was not heard: H5941 therefore Eli H2803 thought H7910 she had been drunken.

14 H5941 And Eli H559 said H7937 unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? H5493 put away H3196 thy wine from thee.

15 H2584 And Hannah H6030 answered H559 and said, H113 No, my lord, H802 I am a woman H7186 of a sorrowful H7307 spirit: H8354 I have drunk H3196 neither wine H7941 nor strong drink, H8210 but I poured out H5315 my soul H6440 before H3068 Jehovah.

16 H5414 Count H519 not thy handmaid H6440 for H1100 a wicked H1323 woman; H7230 for out of the abundance H7879 of my complaint H3708 and my provocation H1696 have I spoken hitherto.

17 H5941 Then Eli H6030 answered H559 and said, H3212 Go H7965 in peace; H430 and the God H3478 of Israel H5414 grant H7596 thy petition H7592 that thou hast asked of him.

18 H559 And she said, H8198 Let thy handmaid H4672 find H2580 favor H5869 in thy sight. H802 So the woman H3212 went H1870 her way, H398 and did eat; H6440 and her countenance was no more sad.

19 H7925 And they rose up H1242 in the morning H7925 early, H7812 and worshipped H6440 before H3068 Jehovah, H7725 and returned, H935 and came H1004 to their house H7414 to Ramah: H511 and Elkanah H3045 knew H2584 Hannah H802 his wife; H3068 and Jehovah H2142 remembered her.

20 H3117 And it came to pass, when the time H8622 was come H2584 about, that Hannah H2029 conceived, H3205 and bare H1121 a son; H7121 and she called H8034 his name H8050 Samuel, H7592 saying, Because I have asked H3068 him of Jehovah.

21 H376 And the man H511 Elkanah, H1004 and all his house, H5927 went up H2076 to offer H3068 unto Jehovah H3117 the yearly H2077 sacrifice, H5088 and his vow.

22 H2584 But Hannah H5927 went not up; H559 for she said H376 unto her husband, H5288 I will not go up until the child H1580 be weaned; H935 and then I will bring H7200 him, that he may appear H6440 before H3068 Jehovah, H3427 and there abide H5704 for H5769 ever.

23 H511 And Elkanah H376 her husband H559 said H6213 unto her, Do H5869 what seemeth H2896 thee good; H3427 tarry H1580 until thou have weaned H3068 him; only Jehovah H6965 establish H1697 his word. H802 So the woman H3427 tarried H1121 and gave her son H3243 suck, H1580 until she weaned him.

24 H1580 And when she had weaned H5927 him, she took him up H7969 with her, with three H6499 bullocks, H259 and one H374 ephah H7058 of meal, H5035 and a bottle H3196 of wine, H935 and brought H1004 him unto the house H3068 of Jehovah H7887 in Shiloh: H5288 and the child H5288 was young.

25 H7819 And they slew H6499 the bullock, H935 and brought H5288 the child H5941 to Eli.

26 H559 And she said, H994 Oh, H113 my lord, H5315 as thy soul H2416 liveth, H113 my lord, H802 I am the woman H5324 that stood H6419 by thee here, praying H3068 unto Jehovah.

27 H5288 For this child H6419 I prayed; H3068 and Jehovah H5414 hath given H7596 me my petition H7592 which I asked of him:

28 H7592 therefore also I have granted H3068 him to Jehovah; H3117 as long as he liveth H7592 he is granted H3068 to Jehovah. H7812 And he worshipped H3068 Jehovah there.
