Elias art thou? And he says: Not I am. The prophet art thou? And he answered: No. ²² They said then to him: Who art thou? that an answer we may give to those having sent us; what sayest thou about thyself? ²³ He said: I: A voice crying in the desert; Make you straight the way of a lord, as said Esaias the prophet. ²⁴ And those having been sent were of the Pharisees; ²⁵ and they asked him, and said to him: Why then dippest thou, if thou not art the Anointed, nor Elias, nor a prophet?
