2 Chronicles 24

Matthew(i) 1 Iehoas was seuen yere olde when he beganne to raygne, and he raigned fourtye yere in Ierusalem. Hys mothers name was Zebiah of Bersabe. 2 And Iehoas dyd that pleased the Lorde all the dayes of Iehoiada that preste. 3 And Iehoyada gaue hym two wyues, & he begat sonnes & daughters. 4 It chaunsed after that, that Iehoas was mynded to mende the house of the Lorde. 5 And vpon that he gathered to gether the prestes and the Leuites and sayde to them: go out thorow the cyties of Iuda and gather of all Israel syluer, to strength the house of youre God, yere by yere, and se that ye hast the thynge: how be it the Leuites were slacke. 6 Then the kynge called Iehoiada that was the chefest, and sayde to him: Why requyrest thou not of the Leuytes to brynge in, out of Iuda and Ierusalem the summe apoynted by Moses the seruaunt of the Lorde, and by the congregacion of Israel, for the tabernacle of wytnesse. 7 For wicked Athaliah and her chyldren had broken the house of God, and had therto bestowed all the dedicat gyftes of the house of the Lorde, aboute Baals. 8 Wherfore at the kynges commaundement, they made a cofer, and set it at the gate of the house of the Lorde: 9 and made proclamacyon thorow Iuda and Ierusalem to brynge in to the Lorde the taxacion of Moses the seruaunt of God, which he set vpon Israel in the wyldernesse. 10 And the Lordes and all the people reioysed and brought in and cast in to the cofer vntil it was full. 11 And when the tyme came that the cheste shoulde be brought in by the handes of the Leuites at the apoyntment of the kynge, when they saw that there was moche moneye: then came the kynges scrybe & one apoynted by the hye preste, and powred out that was in the cofer, & then toke it & caryed it to hys place agayne, & thus they dyd daye by daye, and gathered moche moneye. 12 And the kynge and Iehoiada gaue it to worckemen that wrought vpon the house of the Lorde, and hyred Masons & carpenters to redresse the house of the Lorde, and so dyd they artifycers in yron and brasse, to repayre the house of the Lorde. 13 And the worckemen wrought & the worcke mended thorow theyr handes: and they made the house of God as it ought to be, and strengthed it. 14 And when they had fynysshed it, they brought the rest of the moneye to the kynge and Iehoiada, & therwyth were made vessels for the house of the Lorde: euen vessels to mynystre with all and to serue for burntofferynges as ladelles and vessels of goulde and syluer. And they offered burntofferynges in the house of the Lorde contynuallye all the dayes of Iehoiada. 15 And Iehoiada waxed olde and full of yeres and dyed. An hundred and thirty yere olde was he when he dyed. 16 And they buryed him in the citie of Dauid amonge the kynges because he had done good in Israel, & on God and on his house. 17 And after the death of Iehoiada, came the Lordes of Iuda and made obeysaunce to the kynge. And then he herkened vnto them. 18 And so they lefte the house of the Lorde God of theyr fathers, and serued groues and Images. And then came there wrath vpon Iuda and Ierusalem, for thys theyr trespaces sake. 19 Not wythstandynge yet God sent Prophetes to them, to brynge them agayne vnto the Lorde. And they testifyed vnto them. But they woulde not heare. 20 And the spirite of God came vpon Zachariah the sonne of Iehoiada the preste, and he stept vp aboue the people and sayde to them. Thus sayth God: why transgresse ye the commaundementes of the Lorde? ye shall therfore not prospere, but as ye haue forsaken hym, so shal he forsake you 21 Wherupon they conspired agaynst hym and stoned hym with stones, at the commaundement of the kynge: euen in the courte of the house of the Lord. 22 And so Iehoas the kynge remembred not the kyndenes which Iehoiada his father had done to hym, but slue his sonne. And when he dyed, he sayde: the Lorde se and require a reconynge. 23 And when the yere was out, the hoste of the Siriens came agaynst hym: and they came to Iuda and Ierusalem, and destroyed al the Lordes of the people from amonge the people and sent all the spoyle of them vnto the kynge to Damasco. 24 And though the armie of Siria came with a smalle companye of men, yet the Lorde deliuered a very great hoste into their handes, because they had forsaken the Lorde God of their fathers. And therto they serued Iehoas accordynge. 25 And as sone as they were departed from hym, though they left hym in great diseases: yet his owne seruauntes conspired agaynst hym for the bloude of the chyldren of Iehoiada the preste, & slue hym on hys beed. And when he was dead, they buryed him in the cytye of Dauid: but not in the sepulchres of the kynges. 26 And these are they that conspired agaynst hym: Zabad the sonne of Samaath an Ammonite and Iehosabad the sonne of Simrith a Moabite. 27 And hys sonnes and the summe of the taxe that came to hym, and the foundacion of the house of God, are written in the storie of the booke of kynges. And Amaziah hys sonne raygned in hys steade.
