Matthew(i) 1 Ahaz was .xx. yere olde when he beganne to raygne, & raygned .xvi. yere in Ierusalem. And he dyd not that pleased the Lorde, as dyd hys father Dauid: 2 but walked in the wayes of the kynges of Israel and made therto Baals of metall. 3 And he offered cense in the valeye of the children of Hennon, and burnt his children in fyre after the abhominacyon of the nacyons which the Lord cast out before the chyldren of Israel. 4 And he offered burnt cense in hilaulters & on mountaynes and vnder euery grene tre. 5 Wherfore the Lorde his God delyuered hym into the hand of the kynge of the Siriens: which bet hym & caryed awaye a great multitude of his captiue in to Damascon. And therto he was delyuered into the hande of the kynge of Israel which slue of his a myghtye slaughter. 6 For Phakeh the sonne of Romeliah slue in Iuda an hundred and twentye thousand in one daye, & all fyghtynge men: & that because they had forsaken the Lorde God of theyr fathers. 7 And Zechri a myghtye man in mount Ephraim slue Maasiah the kynges sonne, and Africam the Lord stuarde of housholde, & Elcanah that was next to the kyng. 8 And the children of Israel toke prysoners of theyre brethren two hundred thousand wyues, sonnes and daughters, and therto caryed awaye moche spoyle of them, and brought yt to Samaria. 9 But there was a prophete of the Lordes named obed which went out to the Host that came to Samaria & sayde to them: se, because the Lorde God of your fathers was wroth with Iuda, he deliuered them into youre handes. And ye haue slayne them with cruelnesse that reacheth vp to heauen. 10 And now ye purpose to kepe vnder the chyldren of Iuda and Ierusalem and to make them bondemen & bondwemen. What other thynge do ye (ye vnhappye) then offende the Lorde youre God. 11 But now heare me, & delyuer the captyues agayn whiche ye haue taken of youre brethren: for the great wrath of the Lorde is vpon you? 12 And certayne of the heades of the chyldren of Ephraim, as Asariah the sonne of Iohanan Barachiah the sonne of Mesimeloth, Iehezekiah the sonne of Selum & Amasa the sonne of Hadalai stode vp agaynst them that came from warre, 13 and sayde vnto them: ye shall not bringe in the captiues hether. For where we haue offended the Lorde all readye, ye entende to adde more to oure synnes and trespace. For oure trespace is great all readye, and there is fearce wrath vpon Israel. 14 And vpon that the men of armes lefte the captyues and the spoyle before the Lordes and all the congregacyon. 15 And there arose certayne apoynted therto by name, & toke the presoners & clothed all that were naked amonge them, of the spoyle, and arayed them and shoed them and gaue them to eate & to drinke and anoynted them, & caryed all that were feble of them vpon asses and brought them to Iericho the citie of Paulme trees fast by theyr brethren: and then returned to Samaria agayne. 16 And at that same tyme kynge Ahaz sent vnto the kynges of Assur to haue helpe. 17 And the Edomites came yet agayne and slue of Iuda and caryed awaye some captyues. 18 And the Philistines inuaded the cities in the lowe countreye and the south of Iuda: and toke Bethsames, Aialon, Gaderoth and Socoh with the townes longynge therto, & Thimna with the townes of the same, & Gimso wyth her townes, and dwelt therin. 19 For the Lorde brought Iuda lowe, because of Ahaz kynge of Iuda which made Iuda naked and transgressed agaynst the Lorde. 20 And Thiglath palneser kynge of Assur came vpon hym and beseged hym, but preuayled not agaynst him. 21 For Ahaz toke awaye out of the house of the Lorde and out of the kynges house and out of the Lordes houses, and gaue vnto the kyng of Assur, though yt holpe him not. 22 And therto in the very tyme of hys tribulacion dyd kynge Ahaz trespace yet moare agaynst the Lorde. 23 For he offered vnto the Gods of them of Damsaco whiche bette hym & sayd. because the Gods of the Siriens healpe them, therfore will I offer to them, that they maye helpe me also. But they were his destruccion & the destruccion of all Israel. 24 And Ahaz gathered to gether the vessels of the house of God and brake them, and shut vp the dores of the house of the Lorde, & made him aulters in al corners of Ierusalem. 25 And in all the cities of Iuda cytye by cytye he made hylaulters to burne incense vnto other Gods, & angred the Lord God of hys fathers. 26 The rest of his actes & all his wayes bothe first and last are written in the boke of the kynges of Iuda & Israel. 27 And when Ahaz was layde to rest wt hys fathers, they buryed hym in cytye of Ierusalem: but brought hym not vnto the sepulchres of the kynges of Iuda. And Hezekiah hys sonne raygned in hys steade.
