Jeremiah 26

Matthew(i) 1 In the begynninge of the raigne of Iehoakim the sonne of Iosiah kinge of Iuda, came thys worde from the Lorde, saying: 2 Thus sayeth the Lorde: Stand in the courte of the Lordes house, and speake vnto all them whiche (oute of the cyties of Iuda) come to do worshyppe in the Lordes house, all the wordes that I commaunde the to saye. Loke that thou kepe not one worde backe, 3 yf (peraduenture) they wyll herken, and turne euery man from hys wycked waye: that I maye also repente of the plage, whiche I haue determed to brynge vpon them, because of theyr wycked inuencyons. 4 And after thys maner shalte thou speake vnto them: Thus saith the Lorde: yf ye wyll not obeye me, to walcke in my lawes, whiche I haue geuen you, 5 and to heare the wordes of my seruauntes the Prophetes, whome I sente vnto you, rysynge vp tymelye, and styl sendyng: If ye wyll not folowe them (I saye) 6 then wyll I do to this house, as I dyd vnto Siloh, and wil make this cytie to be abhorred of all the people of the earth. 7 And the priestes the Prophetes and all the people hearde Ieremye preache these wordes, in the house of the Lorde. 8 Nowe when he had spoken oute all the wordes, that the Lorde commaunded hym to preach vnto all the people, then the Priestes, the Prophetes, and all the people toke holde vpon him, and sayde: thou shalte dye. 9 How darrest thou be so bolde, as to saye in the name of the Lord it shall happen to thys house as it dyd vnto Siloh? and this citie shalbe so waste, that no man shall dwell therein? 10 And when all the people were gathered aboute Ieremye in the house of the Lorde, the prynces of Iuda hearde of this rumoure and they came sone oute of the Kynges palace, into the house of the Lorde, and sat them doune before the new dore of the Lorde. 11 Then spake the priestes and the Prophetes vnto the rulers, & to all the people, these wordes: This man is worthy to dye, for he hath preached agaynste this citie, as ye youre selues haue hearde with youre eares. 12 Then sayde Ieremye vnto the rulers and to all the people: The Lorde hath sente me to preache agaynste this house and agaynst this cytie all the wordes that ye haue hearde. 13 Therfore amende youre wayes, and your aduysementes, and be obedyente vnto the voyce of the Lorde youre God: so shall the Lorde repent of the plage, that he had deuysed against you. 14 Nowe as for me: I am in youre handes, do wyth me, as ye thincke expedyent & good. 15 But thys shal ye know: yf ye put me to death ye shall make youre selues, thys cytye and al the inhabytours thereof, gyltye of innocente bloude. For thys is of a trueth: that the Lorde hath sente me vnto you, to speake al these wordes in youre eares. 16 Then sayde the rulers and the people vnto the priestes and Prophetes: This man maye not be condemned to death, for he hath preached vnto vs in the name of the Lorde oure God. 17 The Elders also of the lande stode vp, and sayde thus vnto all the people: 18 Micheah the Morasthite, which was a Prophet vnder Ezekiah kynge of Iuda, spake to all the people of Iuda: Thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes: Syon shalbe plowed lyke a felde, Ierusalem shalbe an heape of stones, and the hyll of the Lordes house shalbe turned to an hye wood. 19 Dyd Ezekiah the kyng of Iuda, & the people of Iuda put him to death for this? No, verely but rather feared the Lord, & made their prayer vnto hym. For the whiche cause also the Lorde repented of the plage, that he had deuysed agaynst them. Shulde we then do suche a shamefull dede agaynst oure soules: 20 There was a Prophete also, that preached styflye in the name of the Lorde, called Vriah the sonne of Semeiah of Cariathiarim: this man preached also agaynst thys cytye and against this lande, accordynge to all as Ieremye sayth. 21 Nowe when Iehoakim the kyng wyth al the estate and prynces had hearde his wordes, the kynge went about to slaye hym. When Vriah perceyued that, he was afrayed, & fled, and departed into Egypte. 22 Then Iehoakim the kinge sente seruauntes into the lande of Egypte. Namely, Elnathan the sonne of Achabor, and certayne men with him into Egipte, 23 whiche fetched Vriah oute of Egypte, and brought hym vnto kyng Iehoakim that slewe hym with the sweard, and caste hys dead bodye into the comon peoples graue. 24 But Ahikam the sonne of Saphan helped Ieremye, that he came not into the handes of the people to be slayne.
