The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.
The LORD appeared to Solomon one night in a dream and told him, "Ask me for whatever you want and I'll give it to you."
And Solomon said, You have shown great kindness to Your servant, my father David, as he walked before You in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with You. And You have kept for him this great kindness, and have given to him a son sitting on his throne, as today.
Now, LORD my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father. I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.
Your servant is among your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can't be numbered or counted for multitude.
So give your servant an understanding mind to govern your people, so I can discern between good and evil. Otherwise, how shall I be able to govern this great people of yours?"
The LORD was pleased that Solomon had asked for this,
And God said to him, Because your request is for this thing, and not for long life for yourself or for wealth or for the destruction of your haters, but for wisdom to be a judge of causes;
"I will do what you have asked. I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had. There has never been nor will ever be anyone like you.
And I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days.
And if you go on in my ways, keeping my laws and my orders as your father David did, I will give you a long life.
Solomon awoke; and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the LORD's covenant, and offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.
