1 Samuel 16

VIN(i) 1 And the LORD said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem. For I have seen a king for Me among his sons. 2 Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about this and kill me!" The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I've come to offer a sacrifice to the LORD.' 3 Call Jesse to the sacrifice and I will show you what you must do. You are to anoint for Me the one whom I name to you. 4 And Samuel did what the LORD said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city trembled to meet him, and said, Do you come in peace? 5 He said, "Peace, I've come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." Samuel consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they entered he looked at Eliab and thought: "Surely the LORD's anointed is before Him." 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, Don't look at his appearance or height, because I have rejected him. I do not look at the things man looks at; man looks at the outward appearance but the LORD looks at the heart. 8 Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. Samuel said: "the LORD has not chosen this one either." 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one. 10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, the LORD has not chosen these. 11 "Are these all the sons you have?" Samuel asked. "There is still the youngest one," Jesse answered. "He is tending sheep." Samuel responded: "Send someone to get him. We will not continue until he gets here." 12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with a beautiful face and handsome appearance. the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is the one. 13 Then Samuel took the bottle of oil, and put the oil on him there among his brothers: and from that day the spirit of the Lord came on David with power. So Samuel went back to Ramah. 14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him. 15 Saul's servants said to him, "Look, an evil spirit from God is troubling you. 16 Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp. When the evil spirit from God comes on you, he can play and you will feel better. 17 Saul said to his servants, Find me someone who can play well and bring him to me. 18 Then one of the young men said, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skilful in playing, a mighty man of valour, a man of war, who speaks well and is good-looking, and the LORD is with him. 19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep." 20 Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a bottle of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. 21 So David came to Saul and entered his service. He loved him greatly and he became Saul's armor bearer. 22 Saul sent to Jesse saying, Please let David stay with me, for I am pleased with him. 23 Whenever an evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the lyre and play it. Relief would come to Saul and he would be better, because the evil spirit would leave him.
