2 Samuel 12

VIN(i) 1 the LORD sent Nathan to David. Nathan came to him and said: "There were two men in a certain city. One was rich and the other was poor. 2 "The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle. 3 but the poor man had nothing except for one little ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It used to share his food and drink from his own cup. It even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. 4 And a traveler came to the rich one, and he spared to take of his own flock, and of his own herd, to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. And he took the ewe lamb of the poor man, and prepared it for the man who had come to him. 5 David flew into a rage at the man and told Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! 6 He shall restore the ewe fourfold, because he did this thing, and had no pity. 7 Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8 I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things. 9 "'Why did you despise what the LORD has promised by doing what is detestable in his sight? "'You struck down Uriah the Hittite with a battle sword. "'You took his wife to be your own. "'You killed him with the sword of the Ammonite army. 10 Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' 11 "This is what the LORD says: 'Look, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 "'You did this secretly. I will make this happen in broad daylight in front of all Israel.'" 13 David said to Nathan: "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied: "the LORD has taken away your sin. You will not die. 14 But because you have utterly scorned the LORD in this matter, the son born for you will certainly die." 15 Nathan went home. the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had given birth to David. The child became sick. 16 David begged God on behalf of the youngster. He fasted, went inside, and spent the night lying on the ground. 17 The elders of his household stood over him to lift him up from the ground, but he was not willing, and he did not eat any food with them. 18 On the seventh day the child died. David's servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. They thought: "While the child was alive, we talked to him, and he would not listen to us. How can we tell him the child is dead? He may harm himself." 19 David saw that his servants were whispering to one another. He realized (discerned) that the child was dead. "Is the child dead?" David asked them. "Yes, he is dead." They answered. 20 David stood up from the ground and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothing. Then he went to the house of the LORD and worshiped, and he went to his own house. He asked, so they served him food, and he ate. 21 His staff asked him, "What's this about? When the child was alive, you fasted and cried. Now that the child has died, you get up and eat!" 22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I thought, Who knows? [perhaps] the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live. 23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me. 24 And David comforted his wife Bathsheba. And he went into her, and lay with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the LORD loved him, 25 and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake. 26 And Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites, and he captured the royal city. 27 And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and taken the City of Waters. 28 "Assemble the rest of the troops. Surround the city and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city. Then it will be named after me." 29 So David mustered his entire army and marched on Rabbah, attacked it, and captured it. 30 He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David's head. He brought a great quantity of plunder out of the city. 31 He brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work with saws, and iron picks, and iron axes, and to labor at the brick kiln. And he did the same to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
