Isaiah 29

VIN(i) 1 Woe to Ariel. Ariel, the city where David camped. Add year to year; let the feasts come around; 2 then I will distress Ariel, and there will be mourning and lamentation. She shall be to me as an altar hearth. 3 I will encamp against you all around you, and will lay siege against you with a mount; I will raise siege works against you. 4 You will be brought down, and will speak out of the ground. Your speech will mumble out of the dust. Your voice will be as of one who has a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and your speech will whisper out of the dust. 5 »Your cruel enemies will be swept away like dust in a windstorm. It will be sudden and unexpected like chaff in the wind. 6 She shall be visited by LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire. 7 The multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all who fight against her and her stronghold, and who distress her, will be like a dream, a vision of the night. 8 And it will be as when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he eats. But he awakes and his soul is empty. Or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he drinks. But he awakes, and behold, he is faint and his soul has appetite. So will the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion. 9 Be astonished and be amazed! Blind yourselves and be blinded! They are drunk but not from wine; they stagger but not from strong drink. 10 For the LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and he has covered your heads (the seers). 11 And the whole vision is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which they give to one that can read, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I cannot, for it is sealed. 12 When you give it to someone who cannot read, and you tell him, "Read this," he'll say, "I don't know how to read." 13 And so the LORD declares, "These people draw near to me with their mouths, and honor me with their lips, but their hearts remain distant from me. Their fear of me consists of commands dictated by men. 14 therefore, behold, I will go on doing among this people, a wonder, even a wonder. For the wisdom of their wise ones shall perish, and the understanding of their intelligent ones shall be hidden. 15 Woe to those who go deep to hide their purpose from the LORD! And their works are in the dark, and they say, Who sees us? And who knows us? 16 You turn things upside down. Should the potter be thought to be like clay; that the thing made should say about him who made it, "He did not make me;" or the thing formed say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding?" 17 In a very short time Lebanon will become a fertile field, and the fertile field will seem like a wood. 18 And in that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book, and out of darkness and obscurity the eyes of the blind shall see. 19 And the humble shall add joy in the LORD, and the poor of men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 20 For the tyrant ceases and the scorner is finished off; and all who watch for mischief are cut off 21 those who make a man guilty by a word, and lay a trap for the reprover in the gate, and turn aside the just for a worthless thing. 22 Therefore thus says the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: "Jacob shall no longer be ashamed, neither shall his face grow pale. 23 When he seeth his children, the work of My hands, in the midst of him, that they sanctify My name; yea, they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall stand in awe of the God of Israel. 24 They who also go-astray in spirit will come to understanding and those who murmur will receive instruction.
