Isaiah 30

VIN(i) 1 "Woe to the rebellious children," says the LORD, "who take counsel, but not from me; and who make an alliance, but not with my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin, 2 They are setting out to go down to Egypt, without having consulted me; to be assisted by Pharao and protected by the Egyptians. 3 For the protection by Pharaoh will be to you for shame, and the ones relying upon Egypt for scorn. 4 For his officials are at Zoan, and his envoys reach to Hanes. 5 "Everyone will be ashamed because of a people who cannot help them. They cannot help. They can only offer shame and reproach." 6 An oracle of the animals of the Negev: Through a land of trouble and distress, of lioness and lion, among them are snake and flying serpent; they carry their wealth on the backs of male donkeys and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people that cannot profit them. 7 For Egypt helps in vain, and to no purpose. Therefore I have called her Rahab who sits still. 8 Now go, write it on a tablet with them, and inscribe it on a scroll, that it may be for the time to come, forever, forever. 9 These people are rebellious and deceitful children. They refuse to listen to the LORD's Law. 10 That say to the seers: 'See not,' and to the prophets: 'Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy delusions; 11 Remove from the way, turn aside from the path, cause to cease from before us the Holy One of Israel. 12 Therefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel: Because you have rejected this word, and have trusted in oppression and tumult, and have leaned upon it: 13 This sin will be to you like a crack in a high wall, causing its fall suddenly and in a minute. 14 "It will break like pottery. It will be smashed. Nothing will be left of it. No piece will be big enough to carry live coals from a fireplace or to dip water from a reservoir." 15 For the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, said, In quiet and rest is your salvation: peace and hope are your strength: but you would not have it so. 16 and you said, "No! For we will flee on horses!" Therefore you shall flee! And, "We will ride on swift horses!" Therefore your pursuers shall be swift! 17 One thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five, you will flee until you are left like a beacon on the top of a mountain, and like a banner on a hill. 18 the LORD is waiting to be kind to you. He rises to have compassion on you. the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for him. 19 You will live in Zion, in Jerusalem. You will not cry anymore. the LORD will certainly have pity on you when you cry for help. As soon as he hears you, he will answer you. 20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers will not be hidden anymore, but your eyes will see your teachers. 21 and when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, This is the way, walk in it. 22 Then you will dishonor your silver-plated idols and your gold-covered statues. You will throw them away like clothing ruined by stains. You will say to them: "Get out!" 23 the LORD will give you rain for the seed that you plant in the ground, and the food that the ground provides will be rich and nourishing. When that day comes, your cattle will graze in large pastures. 24 The cattle and the donkeys that work the soil will eat a mixture of food that has been winnowed with forks and shovels. 25 And there will be streams on every high mountain and elevated hill, watercourses of water, on a day of great slaughter, when towers fall. 26 the moon shall shine as the sun, and the sunshine shall be seven fold, and have as much shine, as in seven days beside. In that day shall the LORD bind up the bruised sores of his people, and heal their wounds. 27 Behold, the name of the LORD comes from far, burning with His anger, and uplifting of smoke; His lips are full of fury, and His tongue like a devouring fire. 28 His breath is like an overflowing stream. It raises neck high and sifts the nations with a sieve of destruction. It places a bit in the mouths of the people to lead them astray. 29 You will have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept and gladness of heart, as he who goes with a pipe to come to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel. 30 And the LORD shall make the majesty of His voice heard; and He shows His arm coming down with raging anger and flame of consuming fire, cloudburst and storm, and hailstones. 31 For from the voice of the LORD shall Assur be broken down, he will smite with a rod. 32 And every stroke of the appointed staff, which the LORD will lay upon him, will be with the sound of tambourine and harps. And he will fight with them in battles with the brandishing of his arm. 33 For a place of fire has long been ready; yes, it has been made ready for the king; he has made it deep and wide: it is massed with fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of fire, puts a light to it.
