Worrell⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹⁷ They took Jesus, therefore; and, bearing the cross for Himself, He went forth into the place called "Place of a Skull," which, in Hebrew, is called "Golgotha;" ¹⁸ where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst. ¹⁹ And Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS." ²⁰ This title, therefore, many of the Jews read; because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, in Greek. ²¹ The high priests of the Jews, therefore, said to Pilate, "Write not, 'The King of the Jews,' but that He said, I am King of the Jews." ²² Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." ²³ The soldiers, therefore, when they crucified Jesus, took His garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part; and also the coat. And the coat was without a seam, woven from the top throughout. ²⁴ They said, therefore, one to another, "Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, 'They divided My garments among themselves, and upon My vesture did they cast lots.'" The soldiers, therefore, did these things. ²⁵ But there were standing by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. ²⁶ Jesus, therefore, seeing His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, saith to His mother, "Woman, behold your Son!" ²⁷ Then saith He to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
