  1 H558 Amaziah H6242 was twenty H2568 and five H8141 years H1121 old H4427 [H8804] when he began to reign, H4427 [H8804] and he reigned H6242 twenty H8672 and nine H8141 years H3389 in Jerusalem. H517 And his mother's H8034 name H3086 was Jehoaddan H3389 of Jerusalem.
2 H6213 [H8799] And he did H3477 that which was right H5869 in the eyes H3068 of the LORD, H8003 but not with a perfect H3824 heart.
3 H4467 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom H2388 [H8804] was established H2026 [H8799] to him, that he slew H5650 his servants H5221 [H8688] that had killed H4428 the king H1 his father.
4 H4191 [H8689] But he slew H1121 not their sons, H3789 [H8803] but did as it is written H8451 in the law H5612 of the book H4872 of Moses, H3068 where the LORD H6680 [H8765] commanded, H559 [H8800] saying, H1 The fathers H4191 [H8799] shall not die H1121 for the sons, H1121 neither shall the sons H4191 [H8799] die H1 for the fathers, H376 but every man H4191 [H8799] shall die H2399 for his own sin.
5 H558 Moreover Amaziah H6908 0 gathered H3063 Judah H6908 [H8799] together, H5975 [H8686] and made H8269 them captains H505 over thousands, H8269 and captains H3967 over hundreds, H1004 according to the houses H1 of their fathers, H3063 throughout all Judah H1144 and Benjamin: H6485 [H8799] and he numbered H6242 them from twenty H8141 years H1121 old H4605 and above, H4672 [H8799] and found H7969 them three H3967 hundred H505 thousand H977 [H8803] choice H3318 [H8802] men, able to go forth H6635 to war, H270 [H8802] that could handle H7420 spear H6793 and shield.
6 H7936 [H8799] He hired H3967 also an hundred H505 thousand H1368 mighty H2428 men of valour H3478 out of Israel H3967 for an hundred H3603 talents H3701 of silver.
7 H935 [H8804] But there came H376 a man H430 of God H559 [H8800] to him, saying, H4428 O king, H6635 let not the army H3478 of Israel H935 [H8799] go H3068 with thee; for the LORD H3478 is not with Israel, H1121 that is, with all the sons H669 of Ephraim.
8 H935 [H8798] But if thou wilt go, H6213 [H8798] do H2388 [H8798] it, be strong H4421 for the battle: H430 God H3782 [H8686] shall make thee fall H6440 at the face of H341 [H8802] the enemy: H430 for God H3426 hath H3581 power H5826 [H8800] to help, H3782 [H8687] and to cast down.
9 H558 And Amaziah H559 [H8799] said H376 to the man H430 of God, H6213 [H8800] But what shall we do H3967 for the hundred H3603 talents H5414 [H8804] which I have given H1416 to the army H3478 of Israel? H376 And the man H430 of God H559 [H8799] answered, H3068 The LORD H3426 is H5414 [H8800] able to give H7235 [H8687] thee much more than this.
10 H558 Then Amaziah H914 [H8686] separated H1416 them, that is, the army H935 [H8804] that had come H669 to him out of Ephraim, H3212 0 to go H4725 home H3212 [H8800] again: H639 therefore their anger H3966 was greatly H2734 [H8799] kindled H3063 against Judah, H7725 [H8799] and they returned H4725 home H2750 in great H639 anger.
  11 H558 And Amaziah H2388 [H8694] strengthened H5090 [H8799] himself, and led forth H5971 his people, H3212 [H8799] and went H1516 to the valley H4417 of salt, H5221 [H8686] and smote H1121 of the sons H8165 of Seir H6235 ten H505 thousand.
12 H6235 And other ten H505 thousand H2416 left alive H1121 the sons H3063 of Judah H7617 [H8804] carried away captive, H935 [H8686] and brought H7218 them to the top H5553 of the rock, H7993 [H8686] and cast them down H7218 from the top H5553 of the rock, H1234 [H8738] that they were all broken in pieces.
13 H1121 But the soldiers H1416 of the army H558 whom Amaziah H7725 [H8689] sent back, H3212 [H8800] that they should not go H4421 with him to battle, H6584 [H8799] fell H5892 upon the cities H3063 of Judah, H8111 from Samaria H1032 even to Bethhoron, H5221 [H8686] and smote H7969 three H505 thousand H962 [H8799] of them, and took H7227 much H961 spoil.
14 H310 Now it came to pass, after H558 that Amaziah H935 [H8800] had come H5221 [H8687] from the slaughter H130 of the Edomites, H935 [H8686] that he brought H430 the gods H1121 of the sons H8165 of Seir, H5975 [H8686] and set them up H430 to be his gods, H7812 [H8691] and bowed H6440 himself at the face of H6999 [H8762] them, and burned incense to them.
15 H639 Therefore the anger H3068 of the LORD H2734 [H8799] was kindled H558 against Amaziah, H7971 [H8799] and he sent H5030 to him a prophet, H559 [H8799] who said H1875 [H8804] to him, Why hast thou sought H430 after the gods H5971 of the people, H5337 [H8689] which could not deliver H5971 their own people H3027 out of thine hand?
16 H1696 [H8763] And it came to pass, as he talked H559 [H8799] with him, that the king said H5414 [H8804] to him, Art thou made H4428 of the king's H3289 [H8802] council? H2308 [H8798] forbear; H5221 [H8686] why shouldest thou be smitten? H5030 Then the prophet H2308 [H8799] stopped, H559 [H8799] and said, H3045 [H8804] I know H430 that God H3289 [H8804] hath determined H7843 [H8687] to decay H6213 [H8804] thee, because thou hast done H8085 [H8804] this, and hast not hearkened H6098 to my counsel.
  17 H558 Then Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H3289 [H8735] took advice, H7971 [H8799] and sent H3101 to Joash, H1121 the son H3059 of Jehoahaz, H1121 the son H3058 of Jehu, H4428 king H3478 of Israel, H559 [H8800] saying, H3212 [H8798] Come, H7200 [H8691] let us look one another H6440 in the face.
  18 H3101 And Joash H4428 king H3478 of Israel H7971 [H8799] sent H558 to Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah, H559 [H8800] saying, H2336 The thistle H3844 that was in Lebanon H7971 [H8804] sent H730 to the cedar H3844 that was in Lebanon, H559 [H8800] saying, H5414 [H8798] Give H1323 thy daughter H1121 to my son H802 for a wife: H5674 [H8799] and there passed by H7704 a wild H2416 beast H3844 that was in Lebanon, H7429 [H8799] and trod down H2336 the thistle.
19 H559 [H8804] Thou sayest, H5221 [H8689] Lo, thou hast smitten H123 the Edomites; H3820 and thine heart H5375 [H8804] lifteth thee up H3513 [H8687] to boast: H3427 [H8798] abide H1004 now at home; H1624 [H8691] why shouldest thou meddle H7451 to thy harm, H5307 [H8804] that thou shouldest fall, H3063 even thou, and Judah with thee?
20 H558 But Amaziah H8085 [H8804] would not hear; H430 for it came from God, H5414 [H8800] that he might give H3027 them into the hand H1875 [H8804] of their enemies, because they sought H430 after the gods H123 of Edom.
21 H3101 So Joash H4428 the king H3478 of Israel H5927 [H8799] went up; H7200 [H8691] and they looked one another H6440 in the face, H558 both he and Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah, H1053 at Bethshemesh, H3063 which belongeth to Judah.
22 H3063 And Judah H5062 [H8735] was smote H6440 at the face of H3478 Israel, H5127 [H8799] and they fled H376 every man H168 to his tent.
23 H3101 And Joash H4428 the king H3478 of Israel H8610 [H8804] took H558 Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah, H1121 the son H3101 of Joash, H1121 the son H3059 of Jehoahaz, H1053 at Bethshemesh, H935 [H8686] and brought H3389 him to Jerusalem, H6555 [H8799] and broke down H2346 the wall H3389 of Jerusalem H8179 from the gate H669 of Ephraim H6437 [H8802] to the corner H8179 gate, H702 four H3967 hundred H520 cubits.
24 H2091 And he took all the gold H3701 and the silver, H3627 and all the vessels H4672 [H8737] that were found H1004 in the house H430 of God H5654 with Obededom, H214 and the treasures H4428 of the king's H1004 house, H1121 H8594 the hostages H7725 [H8799] also, and returned H8111 to Samaria.
  25 H558 And Amaziah H1121 the son H3101 of Joash H4428 king H3063 of Judah H2421 [H8799] lived H310 after H4194 the death H3101 of Joash H1121 son H3059 of Jehoahaz H4428 king H3478 of Israel H2568 H6240 fifteen H8141 years.
26 H3499 Now the rest H1697 of the acts H558 of Amaziah, H7223 first H314 and last, H3789 [H8803] behold, are they not written H5612 in the book H4428 of the kings H3063 of Judah H3478 and Israel?
27 H6256 Now after the time H558 that Amaziah H5493 [H8804] turned away H310 from following H3068 the LORD H7194 [H8799] they made H7195 a conspiracy H3389 against him in Jerusalem; H5127 [H8799] and he fled H3923 to Lachish: H7971 [H8799] but they sent H3923 to Lachish H310 after H4191 [H8686] him, and slew him there.
28 H5375 [H8799] And they brought H5483 him upon horses, H6912 [H8799] and buried H1 him with his fathers H5892 in the city H3063 of Judah.

27 Qui postquam recessit a Domino, tetenderunt ei insidias in Jerusalem. Cumque fugisset in Lachis, miserunt, et interfecerunt eum ibi. 28 Reportantesque super equos, sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David.

And the man of God answeride to hym, The Lord hath, wherof he may yelde to thee myche mo thingis than these. 10 Therfor Amasie departide the oost that cam to hym fro Effraym, that it schulde turne ayen in to his place; and thei weren wrooth greetli ayens Juda, and turneden ayen in to her cuntrei. 11 Forsothe Amasie ledde out tristili his puple, and yede in to the valei of makyngis of salt, and he killide of the sones of Seir ten thousynde. 12 And the sones of Juda token othere ten thousynde of men, and brouyten to the hiy scarre of summe stoon; and castiden hem doun fro the hiyeste in to the pit; whiche alle braken. 13 And thilke oost whom Amasie hadde sent ayen, that it schulde not go with him to batel, was spred abrood in the citees of Juda fro Samarie `til to Betheron; and aftir `that it hadde slayn thre thousynde, it took awey a greet preie. 14 And Amasie, after the sleyng of Idumeis, and after that he hadde brouyt the goddis of the sones of Seir, ordeynede hem `in to goddis to hym silf, and worschipide hem, and brente encense to hem. 15 Wherfor the Lord was wrooth ayens Amasie, and sente to hym a profete, that seide to hym, Whi worschipist thou goddis that `delyueriden not her puple fro thin hond? 16 Whanne the profete spak these thingis, Amasie answeride to hym, Whether thou art a counselour of the king? ceesse thou, lest perauenture Y sle thee. Therfor the profete yede awei, and seide, Y woot, that the Lord thouyte to sle thee; for thou didist this yuel, and ferthermore thou assentidist not to my counsel. 17 Therfor Amasie, the king of Juda, whanne he hadde take a ful yuel counsel, sente to the kyng of Israel Joas, the sone of Joachaz, the sone of Hieu, and seide, Come thou, se we vs togidere. 18 And he sente ayen messangeris, and seide, A `cardue, ether a tasil, which is in the Liban sente to the cedre of the Liban, and seide, Yyue thi douyter a wijf to my sone; and lo! beestis that weren in the wode of the Liban yeden and defouliden the cardue. 19 Thou seidist, Y haue smyte Edom, and therfor thin herte is reysid in to pride; sitte thou in thin hows; whi stirist thou yuel ayens thee, that thou falle, and Juda with thee? 20 Amasie nolde here, for it was the wille of the Lord, that he schulde be bitakun in to the hondis of enemyes, for the goddis of Edom. 21 Therfor Joas, kyng of Israel, stiede, and thei siyen hem silf togidere. Sotheli Amasie, the kyng of Juda, was in Bethsames of Juda; 22 and Juda felde doun bifor Israel, and fledde in to his tabernaclis. 23 Certis the kyng of Israel took in Bethsames Amasie, the kyng of Juda, the sone of Joas, sone of Joachaz, and brouyte in to Jerusalem; and he destriede the wallis therof fro the yate of Effraym `til to the yate of the corner, bi foure hundrid cubitis. 24 And be ledde ayen in to Samarie al the gold and siluer, and alle vessels whiche he foond in the hows of the Lord, and at Obededom, in the tresouris also of the kyngis hows, also and the sones of ostagis. 25 Forsothe Amasie, kyng of Juda, the sone of Joas, lyuede fiftene yeer aftir that Joas, kyng of Israel, the sone of Joachaz, was deed. 26 Sotheli the residue of the formere and the laste wordis of Amasie ben writun in the book of kyngis of Juda and of Israel. 27 And aftir that he yede awei fro the Lord, thei settiden to hym tresouns in Jerusalem; and whanne he hadde fledde to Lachis, thei senten and killiden hym there; 28 and thei brouyten ayen on horsis, and birieden hym with his fadris in the citee of Dauid.
Coverdale(i) 1 Fyue and twentye yeare olde was Amasias whan he was made kynge, and reigned nyne and twentye yeare at Ierusalem. His mothers name was Ioadan of Ierusalem. 2 And he dyd yt which was right in the sighte of the LORDE, but not wt a whole her. 3 Now whan his kingdome was in stregth, he slewe his seruautes which had slayne the kinge his father. 4 But their childre slewe he not, for so is it wrytten in the boke of the lawe of Moses, where the LORDE comaundeth, and sayeth: The fathers shal not dye for the children, nether shal the children dye for the fathers: but euery one shal die for his awne synne. 5 And Amasias broughte Iuda together, and set them after the fathers houses, after the rulers ouer thousandes & ouer hundreds amonge all Iuda and BenIamin, and nombred them from twentye yeare olde & aboue, and founde of the thre hundreth thousande chosen men, which were able to go forth to the warre, and caryed speares and shyldes. 6 And out of Israel appoynted he an hundreth thousande stronge men of warre for an hundreth talentes of siluer. 7 But there came a man of God vnto him, and sayde: O kynge, Let not the hoost of Israel come wt the: for the LORDE is not with Israel, nether with all the childre of Ephraim. 8 For yf thou commest to shewe yi boldnes in the battaill, God shal make the fall before thine enemies. For God hath power to helpe, and to cause for to fall. 9 Amasias sayde vnto the man of God: What shal be done then with ye hundreth talentes yt I haue geue ye soudyers of Israel? The ma of God sayde: The LORDE hath yet more the this to geue the. 10 So Amasias separated out the men of warre which were come to him out of Ephraim, yt they shulde departed vnto their place. Then waxed their wrath very whote agaynst Iuda, and they wente agayne vnto their place in wrothfull displeasure. 11 And Amasias stregthed himselfe, and caried out his people, and wente forth in to the Salt valley, and smote ten thousande of the children of Seir. 12 And the childre of Iuda toke ten thousande of the alyue, whom they broughte vp to the toppe of a mountayne, and cast the downe headlinges from the toppe of the mount, so that they all to barst in sunder. 13 But ye childre of the men of warre whom Amasias had sent awaye agayne (that they shulde not go to the battayll with his people) fell in to the cities of Iuda, from Samaria vnto Beth Horon, and smote thre thousande of me, and toke moch spoyle. 14 And whan Amasias came agayne from the slaughter of the Edomites, he broughte the goddes of the children of Seir, and made them his goddes, and worshipped before them, & brent incense vnto them. 15 Then was the LORDE very wroth at Amasias, & sent vnto him a prophet, which sayde vnto him: Why sekest thou the goddes of the people, which coulde not delyuer their folke from yi hande? 16 And whan he talked with him, the kynge sayde vnto him: Haue they made ye of the kynges councell? Ceasse, why wilt thou be smytten? Then the prophet ceassed, & sayde: I perceaue, that the LORDE is mynded to destroye ye, because thou hast done this, and herkenest not vnto my councell. 17 And Amasias ye kyuge of Iuda toke coucell, & sent vnto Ioas the sonne of Ioahas ye sonne of Iehu, kynge of Israel, sayege; Come, let vs se one another. 18 But Ioas the kynge of Israel sent vnto Amasias ye kynge of Iuda, sayenge: The hawthorne in Libanus sent vnto ye Cedre tre in Libanus, sayege: Geue thy doughter vnto my sonne to wife. But a wylde beest in Libanus ranne ouer ye hawthorne, & trode it downe. 19 Thou thinkest: Beholde, I haue smytten the Edomites, therfore is thine hert proude to boaste. Now byde at home: why stryuest thou after mysfortune, that thou mayest fall & Iuda wt the? 20 Neuertheles Amasias consented not: for so was it broughte to passe of God, yt they mighte be geuen in to the handes of the enemies, because they soughte the goddes of ye Edomites. 21 Then wente Ioas the kynge of Israel vp, & they sawe one another, he and Amasias the kynge of Iuda, at Beth Semes which lyeth in Iuda. 22 But Iuda was smytte before Israel, and they fled euery one vnto his tent. 23 And Ioas the kynge of Israel toke Amasias ye kynge of Iuda, the sonne of Ioas ye sonne of Ioahas, at Beth Semes, & broughte him to Ierusalem, & brake downe the wall of Ierusale, from ye porte of Ephraim vnto the corner porte, eue foure hundreth cubites longe: 24 and toke with him all the golde, and siluer, and all the ornamentes that were foude in ye house of God with ObedEdom, and in the treasures in the kynges house, and the childre to pledge vnto Samaria. 25 And Amasias the sonne of Ioas kynge of Iuda, liued after the death of Ioas the sonne of Ioahas kynge of Israel fiftene yeare. 26 What more there is to saye of Amasias (both the first and last) beholde, it is written in ye boke of the kynges of Iuda & Israel. 27 And fro the tyme forth that Amasias departed from the LORDE, they conspyred against him at Ierusalem. But he fled vnto Lachis. The sent they after him vnto Lachis, & slewe him there. 28 And they brought him vpo horses & buried him beside his fathers in the cite of Iuda.
MSTC(i) 1 Amaziah was twenty five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddin of Jerusalem. 2 And he did that pleased the LORD: but not with the whole heart. 3 And as soon as he was settled in the kingdom, he slew them that killed the king his father. 4 But he slew not their children as it is written in the law, even in the book of Moses to whom the LORD commanded, saying, "The fathers shall not die for the children's causes, nor the children for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin." 5 And Amaziah gathered Judah together and made captains over thousands and over hundreds in the houses of their fathers throughout all Judah and Benjamin. And he numbered them from twenty years and above, and found them three hundred thousand lusty men able to go to battle, and that could handle spear and shield. 6 And he hired thereto a hundred thousand fighting men out of Israel, for a hundred talents of silver. 7 But there came a man of God to him and said, "King, let not the army of Israel go with thee: for the LORD is not with Israel neither with any of the house of Ephraim. 8 Or else if thou needs wilt, then go and do it, and make thyself strong to battle: and thou shalt see, that God shall make thee fall before thine enemies. For God hath power to help or to cast down." 9 And Amaziah said again to the man of God, "What shall we do then, for the hundred talents which I have given unto the host of Israel?" And the man of God said, "The LORD is able to give thee much more than that." 10 And then Amaziah severed that army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again. Wherefore they were exceeding wroth with Judah, and returned to their own home in great anger. 11 And Amaziah took heart and carried out his host and went to Saltdale, where he slew of the children of Seir ten thousand. 12 And other ten thousand the children of Judah took alive, and carried them unto the top of a rock and cast them down from the top of the rock that they all to burst: 13 but the men of the army which Amaziah had turned back and would not let go with his people to battle, ran upon the cities of Judah from Samaria unto Bethhoron and slew three thousand of them and won much spoil. 14 And it chanced, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, and had brought the gods of the children of Seir, he set them up to be his gods, and bowed himself before them and burned cense unto them. 15 Wherefore the LORD was wroth with Amaziah and sent to him a prophet, and said to him, "Why seekest thou the gods of the people which were not able to deliver their own people out of thine hands?" 16 And as the prophet spake to him, he said to the prophet, "Have men made thee of the king's counsel? Cease, lest thou be beaten." And the prophet ceased, and said, "I am sure that God hath taken counsel to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and obeyest not my counsel." 17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu king of Israel and said, "Come, and let us see each other." 18 And Joash king of Israel sent again to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "A thistle in Lebanon sent to a Cedar tree of Lebanon saying, 'Give thy daughter to my son to wife.' But there came the wild beasts of Lebanon and trod down the thistle. 19 Thou thinkest, 'See, I have beaten the Edomites,' therefore thine heart ariseth to glorify thyself. Now bide at home: what needeth thee to provoke to evil, that thou perish and Judah with thee?" 20 But Amaziah rested not: for it came of God, even to deliver them into the hands of their enemies - and that because they had sought the gods of the Edomites. 21 And Joash king of Israel came up: and they saw either other, both he and Amaziah king of Judah at Bethshemesh in Judah. 22 And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and fled every man to his tent. 23 And Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah at Bethshemesh: and brought him to Jerusalem, and tare the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits long. 24 And he took all the gold and silver and all the Jewels that were found in the house of God, with Obededom and the treasure of the king's house and hostages, and returned to Samaria. 25 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, fifteen years. 26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 And after that time that Amaziah did turn away from the LORD, they conspired treason against him in Jerusalem: and he fled to Lachish, whither they sent after him and slew him there, 28 and brought him up with horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

Nowe therfore byde at home: why dost thou prouoke vnto euell, that thou mayest perisshe, both thou and Iuda with the? 20 But Amaziahu wolde not herken to him: for it came of God, euen to deliuer them into the hande of theyr enemyes because they sought councell at the Gods of Edom. 21 And so Ioas the kynge of Israel came vp: and they sawe ether other, both he and Amaziahu kynge of Iuda at Bethsames which is in Iuda. 22 And Iuda was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled euery man to his tent. 23 And Ioas the kynge of Israel toke Amaziahu kyng of Iuda the sonne of Ioahas the sonne of Iehoahas at Bethsames: and brought hym to Ierusalem, & tare the walle of Ierusalem (from the gate of Ephraim vnto the gate that was ouer agaynst it) foure hundred cubytes. 24 And he toke awaye also all the golde and syiner, and all the Iewelles that were founde in the house of God with Obed Edom, and the treasures of the kynges house, & the yonge wardes, and returned to Samaria. 25 And Amaziahu the sonne of Ioas kynge of Iuda lyued after the deeth of Ioas sonne of Iehoahaz king of Israel fiftene yere. 26 The rest of the actes of Amaziahu fyrst and last, are they not written in the boke of the kynges of Iuda and Israel? 27 And after the tyme that Amaziahu dyd turne awaye from the Lorde they conspired treason agaynst him in Ierusalem: and whan he was fled to Lachis, they sent to Lachis after hym, and slue hym there: 28 and brought hym vp with horsses, and buryed hym with hys fathers in the cytie of Iuda.

Then the man of God answered, The Lord is able to giue thee more then this. 10 So Amaziah separated them, to wit, the armie that was come to him out of Ephraim, to returne to their place: wherefore their wrath was kindled greatly against Iudah, and they returned to their places with great anger. 11 Then Amaziah was encouraged, and led forth his people, and went to the salt valley, and smote of the children of Seir, ten thousand. 12 And other ten thousand did the children of Iudah take aliue, and caryed them to the top of a rocke, and cast them downe from the top of the rocke, and they all burst to pieces. 13 But the men of the armie, which Amaziah sent away, that they should not goe with his people to battell, fell vpon the cities of Iudah from Samaria vnto Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and tooke much spoyle. 14 Now after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them vp to be his gods, and worshipped them, and burned incense vnto them. 15 Wherefore the Lord was wroth with Amaziah, and sent vnto him a Prophet, which sayd vnto him, Why hast thou sought the gods of the people, which were not able to deliuer their owne people out of thine hand? 16 And as he talked with him, he said vnto him, Haue they made thee the Kings counseler? cease thou: why should they smite thee? And the Prophet ceased, but said, I knowe that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not obeyed my counsell. 17 Then Amaziah King of Iudah tooke counsell, and sent to Ioash the sonne of Iehoahaz, the sonne of Iehu King of Israel, saying, Come, let vs see one another in the face. 18 But Ioash King of Israel sent to Amaziah King of Iudah, saying, The thistle that is in Lebanon, sent to the cedar that is in Lebanon, saying, Giue thy daughter to my sonne to wife: and the wilde beast that was in Lebanon went and trode downe the thistle. 19 Thou thinkest: lo, thou hast smitten Edom, and thine heart lifteth thee vp to bragge: abide now at home: why doest thou prouoke to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, and Iudah with thee? 20 But Amaziah would not heare: for it was of God, that he might deliuer them into his had, because they had sought the gods of Edom. 21 So Ioash the King of Israel went vp: and he, and Amaziah King of Iudah saw one another in the face at Bethshemesh, which is in Iudah. 22 And Iudah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled euery man to his tents. 23 But Ioash the King of Israel tooke Amaziah King of Iudah, the sonne of Ioash, the sonne of Iehoahaz in Bethshemesh, and brought him to Ierusalem, and brake downe the wall of Ierusalem, from the gate of Ephraim vnto the corner gate, foure hundreth cubites. 24 And he tooke all the gold and the siluer, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed Edom, and in the treasures of the Kings house, and the children that were in hostage, and returned to Samaria. 25 And Amaziah the sonne of Ioash King of Iudah liued after the death of Ioash sonne of Iehoahaz King of Israel, fifteene yeere. 26 Concerning the rest of the actes of Amaziah first and last, are they not written in the booke of the Kings of Iudah and Israel? 27 Nowe after the time that Amaziah did turne away from ye Lord, they wrought treason against him in Ierusalem: and when he was fled to Lachish, they sent to Lachish after him, and slewe him there. 28 And they brought him vpon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the citie of Iudah.

DouayRheims(i) 1 Amasias was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem, the name of his mother was Joadan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was good in the sight of the Lord: but yet not with a perfect heart. 3 And when he saw himself strengthened in his kingdom, he put to death the servants that had slain the king his father. 4 But he slew not their children, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying: The fathers shall not be slain for the children, nor the children for their fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin. 5 Amasias therefore gathered Juda together, and appointed them by families, and captains of thousands and of hundreds in all Juda, and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and upwards, and found three hundred thousand young men that could go out to battle, and could hold the spear and shield. 6 He hired also of Israel a hundred thousand valiant men, for a hundred talents of silver. 7 But a man of God came to him, and said: O king, let not the army of Israel go out with thee, for the Lord is not with Israel, and all the children of Ephraim: 8 And if thou think that battles consist in the strength of the army, God will make thee to be overcome by the enemies: for it belongeth to God both to help, and to put to flight. 9 And Amasias said to the man of God: What will then become of the hundred talents which I have given to the soldiers of Israel? and the man of God answered him: The Lord is rich enough to be able to give thee much more than this. 10 Then Amasias separated the army, that came to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: but they being much enraged against Juda, returned to their own country. 11 And Amasias taking courage led forth his people, and went to the vale of saltpits, and slew of the children of Seir ten thousand. 12 And other ten thousand men the sons of Juda took, and brought to the steep of a certain rock, and cast them down headlong from the top, and they all were broken to pieces. 13 But that army which Amasias had sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, spread themselves among the cities of Juda, from Samaria to Beth-horon, and having killed three thousand took away much spoil. 14 But Amasias after he had slain the Edomites, set up the gods of the children of Seir, which he had brought thence, to be his gods, and adored them, and burnt incense to them. 15 Wherefore the Lord being angry against Amasias, sent a prophet to him, to say to him: Why hast thou adored gods that have not delivered their own people out of thy hand? 16 And when he spoke these things, he answered him: Art thou the king's counsellor? be quiet, lest I kill thee. And the prophet departing, said: I know that God is minded to kill thee, because thou hast done this evil, and moreover hast not hearkened to my counsel. 17 Then Amasias king of Juda taking very bad counsel, sent to Joas the son of Joachaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying: Come, let us see one another. 18 But he sent back the messengers, saying: The thistle that is in Libanus, sent to the cedar in Libanus, saying: Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and behold the beasts that were in the wood of Libanus passed by and trod down the thistle. 19 Thou hast said: I have overthrown Edom, and therefore thy heart is lifted up with pride: stay at home, why dost thou provoke evil against thee, that both thou shouldst fall and Juda with thee. 20 Amasias would not hearken to him, because it was the Lord's will that he should be delivered into the hands of enemies, because of the gods of Edom. 21 So Joas king of Israel went up, and they presented themselves to be seen by one another: and Amasias king of Juda was in Bethsames of Juda: 22 And Juda fell before Israel, and they fled to their dwellings. 23 And Joas king of Israel took Amasias king of Juda, the son of Joas, the son of Joachaz, in Bethsames, and brought him to Jerusalem: and broke down the walls thereof from the gate of Ephraim, to the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits. 24 And he took all the gold, and silver, and all the vessels, that he found in the house of God, and with Obededom, and in the treasures of the king's house, moreover also the sons of the hostages, he brought back to Samaria. 25 And Amasias the son of Joas king of Juda lived, after the death of Joas the son of Joachaz king of Israel, fifteen years. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amasias, the first and last, are written in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel. 27 And after he revolted from the Lord, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. And he fled into Lachis, and they sent, and killed him there. 28 And they brought him back upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of David.

Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

2

And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.

3

Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.

4

But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.

5

Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.

6

He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valor out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.

7

But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.

8

But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.

9

And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.

10

Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.

11

And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.

12

And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.

13

But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.

14

Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.

15

Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?

16

And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.

17

Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.

18

And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.

19

Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?

20

But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.

21

So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.

22

And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.

23

And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

24

And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

25

And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.

26

Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?

27

Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.

28

And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

  8 H935 But if thou wilt go [H8798]   H6213 , do [H8798]   H2388 it, be strong [H8798]   H4421 for the battle H430 : God H3782 shall make thee fall [H8686]   H6440 before H341 the enemy [H8802]   H430 : for God H3426 hath H3581 power H5826 to help [H8800]   H3782 , and to cast down [H8687]  .
9 H558 And Amaziah H559 said [H8799]   H376 to the man H430 of God H6213 , But what shall we do [H8800]   H3967 for the hundred H3603 talents H5414 which I have given [H8804]   H1416 to the army H3478 of Israel H376 ? And the man H430 of God H559 answered [H8799]   H3068 , The LORD H3426 is H5414 able to give [H8800]   H7235 thee much more [H8687]   than this.
  10 H558 Then Amaziah H914 separated [H8686]   H1416 them, to wit, the army H935 that was come [H8804]   H669 to him out of Ephraim H3212 , to go H4725 home H3212 again [H8800]   H639 : wherefore their anger H3966 was greatly H2734 kindled [H8799]   H3063 against Judah H7725 , and they returned [H8799]   H4725 home H2750 in great H639 anger.
  11 H558 And Amaziah H2388 strengthened [H8694]   H5090 himself, and led forth [H8799]   H5971 his people H3212 , and went [H8799]   H1516 to the valley H4417 of salt H5221 , and smote [H8686]   H1121 of the children H8165 of Seir H6235 ten H505 thousand.
12 H6235 And other ten H505 thousand H2416 left alive H1121 did the children H3063 of Judah H7617 carry away captive [H8804]   H935 , and brought [H8686]   H7218 them unto the top H5553 of the rock H7993 , and cast them down [H8686]   H7218 from the top H5553 of the rock H1234 , that they all were broken in pieces [H8738]  .
  13 H1121 But the soldiers H1416 of the army H558 which Amaziah H7725 sent back [H8689]   H3212 , that they should not go [H8800]   H4421 with him to battle H6584 , fell [H8799]   H5892 upon the cities H3063 of Judah H8111 , from Samaria H1032 even unto Bethhoron H5221 , and smote [H8686]   H7969 three H505 thousand H962 of them, and took [H8799]   H7227 much H961 spoil.
14 H310 Now it came to pass, after H558 that Amaziah H935 was come [H8800]   H5221 from the slaughter [H8687]   H130 of the Edomites H935 , that he brought [H8686]   H430 the gods H1121 of the children H8165 of Seir H5975 , and set them up [H8686]   H430 to be his gods H7812 , and bowed down [H8691]   H6440 himself before H6999 them, and burned incense [H8762]   unto them.
15 H639 Wherefore the anger H3068 of the LORD H2734 was kindled [H8799]   H558 against Amaziah H7971 , and he sent [H8799]   H5030 unto him a prophet H559 , which said [H8799]   H1875 unto him, Why hast thou sought [H8804]   H430 after the gods H5971 of the people H5337 , which could not deliver [H8689]   H5971 their own people H3027 out of thine hand?
  16 H1696 And it came to pass, as he talked [H8763]   H559 with him, that the king said [H8799]   H5414 unto him, Art thou made [H8804]   H4428 of the king's H3289 counsel [H8802]   H2308 ? forbear [H8798]   H5221 ; why shouldest thou be smitten [H8686]   H5030 ? Then the prophet H2308 forbare [H8799]   H559 , and said [H8799]   H3045 , I know [H8804]   H430 that God H3289 hath determined [H8804]   H7843 to destroy [H8687]   H6213 thee, because thou hast done [H8804]   H8085 this, and hast not hearkened [H8804]   H6098 unto my counsel.
  17 H558 Then Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H3289 took advice [H8735]   H7971 , and sent [H8799]   H3101 to Joash H1121 , the son H3059 of Jehoahaz H1121 , the son H3058 of Jehu H4428 , king H3478 of Israel H559 , saying [H8800]   H3212 , Come [H8798]   H7200 , let us see one another [H8691]   H6440 in the face.
  18 H3101 And Joash H4428 king H3478 of Israel H7971 sent [H8799]   H558 to Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H559 , saying [H8800]   H2336 , The thistle H3844 that was in Lebanon H7971 sent [H8804]   H730 to the cedar H3844 that was in Lebanon H559 , saying [H8800]   H5414 , Give [H8798]   H1323 thy daughter H1121 to my son H802 to wife H5674 : and there passed by [H8799]   H7704 a wild H2416 beast H3844 that was in Lebanon H7429 , and trode down [H8799]   H2336 the thistle.
  19 H559 Thou sayest [H8804]   H5221 , Lo, thou hast smitten [H8689]   H123 the Edomites H3820 ; and thine heart H5375 lifteth thee up [H8804]   H3513 to boast [H8687]   H3427 : abide [H8798]   H1004 now at home H1624 ; why shouldest thou meddle [H8691]   H7451 to thine hurt H5307 , that thou shouldest fall [H8804]   H3063 , even thou, and Judah with thee?
20 H558 But Amaziah H8085 would not hear [H8804]   H430 ; for it came of God H5414 , that he might deliver [H8800]   H3027 them into the hand H1875 of their enemies, because they sought [H8804]   H430 after the gods H123 of Edom.
21 H3101 So Joash H4428 the king H3478 of Israel H5927 went up [H8799]   H7200 ; and they saw one another [H8691]   H6440 in the face H558 , both he and Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H1053 , at Bethshemesh H3063 , which belongeth to Judah.
22 H3063 And Judah H5062 was put to the worse [H8735]   H6440 before H3478 Israel H5127 , and they fled [H8799]   H376 every man H168 to his tent.
  23 H3101 And Joash H4428 the king H3478 of Israel H8610 took [H8804]   H558 Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H1121 , the son H3101 of Joash H1121 , the son H3059 of Jehoahaz H1053 , at Bethshemesh H935 , and brought [H8686]   H3389 him to Jerusalem H6555 , and brake down [H8799]   H2346 the wall H3389 of Jerusalem H8179 from the gate H669 of Ephraim H6437 to the corner [H8802]   H8179 gate H702 , four H3967 hundred H520 cubits.
24 H2091 And he took all the gold H3701 and the silver H3627 , and all the vessels H4672 that were found [H8737]   H1004 in the house H430 of God H5654 with Obededom H214 , and the treasures H4428 of the king's H1004 house H1121 , the hostages H8594   H7725 also, and returned [H8799]   H8111 to Samaria.
  25 H558 And Amaziah H1121 the son H3101 of Joash H4428 king H3063 of Judah H2421 lived [H8799]   H310 after H4194 the death H3101 of Joash H1121 son H3059 of Jehoahaz H4428 king H3478 of Israel H2568 fifteen H6240   H8141 years.
26 H3499 Now the rest H1697 of the acts H558 of Amaziah H7223 , first H314 and last H3789 , behold, are they not written [H8803]   H5612 in the book H4428 of the kings H3063 of Judah H3478 and Israel?
27 H6256 Now after the time H558 that Amaziah H5493 did turn away [H8804]   H310 from following H3068 the LORD H7194 they made [H8799]   H7195 a conspiracy H3389 against him in Jerusalem H5127 ; and he fled [H8799]   H3923 to Lachish H7971 : but they sent [H8799]   H3923 to Lachish H310 after H4191 him, and slew [H8686]   him there.
28 H5375 And they brought [H8799]   H5483 him upon horses H6912 , and buried [H8799]   H1 him with his fathers H5892 in the city H3063 of Judah.
Thomson(i) 1 Amasias was twenty five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty nine years in Jerusalem, and his mother's name was Joadaen of Jerusalem; 2 and he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. 3 Now when the kingdom was established in his hand, he put to death his servants who had slain the king his father. 4 But, according to the covenant of the law of the Lord, he did not put to death their children, as it is written; as the Lord commanded saying, Fathers shall not be put to death for children; nor shall children be put to death for fathers; but they shall die every one for his own crime 5 Then Amasias assembled the house of Juda and appointed them according to the houses of their patriarchal families, to be captains of thousands and captains of hundreds throughout all Juda and Jerusalem. And having numbered them from twenty years old and upwards, he found them to be three hundred thousand, able to go forth to war armed with spears and shields. 6 Then he hired from Israel a hundred chiliads, men mighty in power, for a hundred talents of silver. 7 But there came to him a man of God and said, king, the army of Israel must not go with thee, for the Lord is not with Israel. 8 For if thou thinkest to strengthen thyself with any of these Ephraimites, the Lord will rout thee before the enemy; for it is in the power of the Lord to strengthen or to rout. 9 And Amasias said to the man of God, But what must I do in respect to the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? To which the man of God replied, It is in the power of the Lord to give thee more than that. 10 Then Amasias separated from the army which had come to him from Ephraim, that they might go to their place. Thereupon they were greatly incensed against Juda, and returned to their place in a rage. 11 And Amasias strengthened himself, and took his own people and went to the valley of salt, and there smote of the sons of Seir ten thousand. 12 And the children of Juda took ten thousand alive and carried them to the top of a precipice, and threw them down from the top of the precipice, so that they were all dashed to pieces. 13 Now the soldiers of the army which Amasias had sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, had fallen on the cities of Juda from Samaria to Baithoron and had smitten of them three thousand, and carried off much spoil. 14 And it happened that after Amasias came from smiting Idumea, a person brought him the gods of the children of Seir, and he set them up to be his gods, and bowed down before them and sacrificed to them: 15 therefore the wrath of the Lord was against Amasias, and he sent a prophet to him and said to him, Why hast thou sought the gods of this people, which could not deliver their own people out of thy hand? 16 But while the prophet was speaking to him lie said to him, Have I made thee a counsellor of the king? Forbear, lest thou be scourged. Thereupon the prophet held his peace, for I know, said he, that he hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened to my counsel. 17 Then Amasias king of Juda took counsel and sent to Joas, son of Joachaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come and let us look each other in the face. 18 Upon which Joas king of Israel sent to Amasias king of Juda saying, The thistle on Libanus sent to the cedar on Libanus saying, Give thy daughter to my son for a wife. But lo! the wild beasts on Libanus will come; nay the wild beasts on Libanus did come and trample down the thistle. 19 Thou hast said, Behold I have smitten Idumea, therefore thy stupid heart lifteth thee up. Abide now at home: why dost thou take counsel to thy hurt, that thou mayest fall and Juda with thee? 20 But Amasias would not hearken, for the Lord had determined to deliver him up, because he sought the gods of the Idumeans. 21 So Joas king of Israel went up; and he and Amasias king of Juda looked each other in the face at Baithsamys, which belongeth to Juda. 22 And Juda was routed before Israel, and fled every man to his habitation. 23 And Joas king of Israel took Amasias king of Juda, son of Joas, son of Joachaz, at Baithsamys and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down of the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits; 24 and he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels found in the house of the Lord, and in the custody of Abdedom; and the treasures of the king's house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria. 25 And Amasias the son of Joas, king of Juda, lived after the death of Joas, the son of Joachaz, king of Israel, fifteen years. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amasias, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel? 27 And when Amasias departed wholly from the Lord, they formed a conspiracy against him; whereupon he fled from Jerusalem to Lachis; but they sent after him to Lachis, and there put him to death, 28 and they brought him up on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of David.

And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart. 3 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father. 4 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law of the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin. 5 Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield. 6 He hired also a hundred thousand mighty men of valor out of Israel for a hundred talents of silver. 7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim. 8 But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God will make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down. 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this. 10 Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that had come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger. 11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand. 12 And other ten thousand left alive the children of Judah carried away captive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they were all broken in pieces. 13 But the soldiers of the army whom Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even to Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil. 14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah had come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed himself before them, and burned incense to them. 15 Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, who said to him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thy hand? 16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, Art thou made of the king's council? forbear? why shouldst thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbore, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened to my counsel. 17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face. 18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for a wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle. 19 Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thy heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldst thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldst fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? 20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it came from God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent. 23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 24 And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria. 25 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah, lived after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, fifteen years. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 Now after the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there. 28 And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

  5 H558 Moreover Amaziah H6908 0 gathered H3063 Judah H6908 [H8799] together H5975 [H8686] , and made H8269 them captains H505 over thousands H8269 , and captains H3967 over hundreds H1004 , according to the houses H1 of their fathers H3063 , throughout all Judah H1144 and Benjamin H6485 [H8799] : and he numbered H6242 them from twenty H8141 years H1121 old H4605 and above H4672 [H8799] , and found H7969 them three H3967 hundred H505 thousand H977 [H8803] choice H3318 [H8802] men, able to go forth H6635 to war H270 [H8802] , that could handle H7420 spear H6793 and shield.
6 H7936 [H8799] He hired H3967 also an hundred H505 thousand H1368 mighty H2428 men of valour H3478 out of Israel H3967 for an hundred H3603 talents H3701 of silver.
7 H935 [H8804] But there came H376 a man H430 of God H559 [H8800] to him, saying H4428 , O king H6635 , let not the army H3478 of Israel H935 [H8799] go H3068 with thee; for the LORD H3478 is not with Israel H1121 , that is, with all the children H669 of Ephraim.
  8 H935 [H8798] But if thou wilt go H6213 [H8798] , do H2388 [H8798] it, be strong H4421 for the battle H430 : God H3782 [H8686] shall make thee fall H6440 before H341 [H8802] the enemy H430 : for God H3426 hath H3581 power H5826 [H8800] to help H3782 [H8687] , and to cast down.
9 H558 And Amaziah H559 [H8799] said H376 to the man H430 of God H6213 [H8800] , But what shall we do H3967 for the hundred H3603 talents H5414 [H8804] which I have given H1416 to the army H3478 of Israel H376 ? And the man H430 of God H559 [H8799] answered H3068 , The LORD H3426 is H5414 [H8800] able to give H7235 [H8687] thee much more than this.
  10 H558 Then Amaziah H914 [H8686] separated H1416 them, that is, the army H935 [H8804] that had come H669 to him out of Ephraim H3212 0 , to go H4725 home H3212 [H8800] again H639 : therefore their anger H3966 was greatly H2734 [H8799] kindled H3063 against Judah H7725 [H8799] , and they returned H4725 home H2750 in great H639 anger.
  11 H558 And Amaziah H2388 [H8694] strengthened H5090 [H8799] himself, and led forth H5971 his people H3212 [H8799] , and went H1516 to the valley H4417 of salt H5221 [H8686] , and smote H1121 of the children H8165 of Seir H6235 ten H505 thousand.
12 H6235 And other ten H505 thousand H2416 left alive H1121 the children H3063 of Judah H7617 [H8804] carried away captive H935 [H8686] , and brought H7218 them to the top H5553 of the rock H7993 [H8686] , and cast them down H7218 from the top H5553 of the rock H1234 [H8738] , that they were all broken in pieces.
  13 H1121 But the soldiers H1416 of the army H558 whom Amaziah H7725 [H8689] sent back H3212 [H8800] , that they should not go H4421 with him to battle H6584 [H8799] , fell H5892 upon the cities H3063 of Judah H8111 , from Samaria H1032 even to Bethhoron H5221 [H8686] , and smote H7969 three H505 thousand H962 [H8799] of them, and took H7227 much H961 spoil.
14 H310 Now it came to pass, after H558 that Amaziah H935 [H8800] had come H5221 [H8687] from the slaughter H130 of the Edomites H935 [H8686] , that he brought H430 the gods H1121 of the children H8165 of Seir H5975 [H8686] , and set them up H430 to be his gods H7812 [H8691] , and bowed H6440 himself before H6999 [H8762] them, and burned incense to them.
15 H639 Therefore the anger H3068 of the LORD H2734 [H8799] was kindled H558 against Amaziah H7971 [H8799] , and he sent H5030 to him a prophet H559 [H8799] , who said H1875 [H8804] to him, Why hast thou sought H430 after the gods H5971 of the people H5337 [H8689] , which could not deliver H5971 their own people H3027 out of thy hand?
  16 H1696 [H8763] And it came to pass, as he talked H559 [H8799] with him, that the king said H5414 [H8804] to him, Art thou made H4428 of the king's H3289 [H8802] council H2308 [H8798] ? forbear H5221 [H8686] ; why shouldest thou be smitten H5030 ? Then the prophet H2308 [H8799] stopped H559 [H8799] , and said H3045 [H8804] , I know H430 that God H3289 [H8804] hath determined H7843 [H8687] to destroy H6213 [H8804] thee, because thou hast done H8085 [H8804] this, and hast not hearkened H6098 to my counsel.
  17 H558 Then Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H3289 [H8735] took advice H7971 [H8799] , and sent H3101 to Joash H1121 , the son H3059 of Jehoahaz H1121 , the son H3058 of Jehu H4428 , king H3478 of Israel H559 [H8800] , saying H3212 [H8798] , Come H7200 [H8691] , let us look one another H6440 in the face.
  18 H3101 And Joash H4428 king H3478 of Israel H7971 [H8799] sent H558 to Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H559 [H8800] , saying H2336 , The thistle H3844 that was in Lebanon H7971 [H8804] sent H730 to the cedar H3844 that was in Lebanon H559 [H8800] , saying H5414 [H8798] , Give H1323 thy daughter H1121 to my son H802 for a wife H5674 [H8799] : and there passed by H7704 a wild H2416 beast H3844 that was in Lebanon H7429 [H8799] , and trod down H2336 the thistle.
  19 H559 [H8804] Thou sayest H5221 [H8689] , Lo, thou hast smitten H123 the Edomites H3820 ; and thy heart H5375 [H8804] lifteth thee up H3513 [H8687] to boast H3427 [H8798] : abide H1004 now at home H1624 [H8691] ; why shouldest thou meddle H7451 to thy harm H5307 [H8804] , that thou shouldest fall H3063 , even thou, and Judah with thee?
20 H558 But Amaziah H8085 [H8804] would not hear H430 ; for it came from God H5414 [H8800] , that he might deliver H3027 them into the hand H1875 [H8804] of their enemies, because they sought H430 after the gods H123 of Edom.
21 H3101 So Joash H4428 the king H3478 of Israel H5927 [H8799] went up H7200 [H8691] ; and they looked one another H6440 in the face H558 , both he and Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H1053 , at Bethshemesh H3063 , which belongeth to Judah.
  22 H3063 And Judah H5062 [H8735] was smote H6440 before H3478 Israel H5127 [H8799] , and they fled H376 every man H168 to his tent.
  23 H3101 And Joash H4428 the king H3478 of Israel H8610 [H8804] took H558 Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H1121 , the son H3101 of Joash H1121 , the son H3059 of Jehoahaz H1053 , at Bethshemesh H935 [H8686] , and brought H3389 him to Jerusalem H6555 [H8799] , and broke down H2346 the wall H3389 of Jerusalem H8179 from the gate H669 of Ephraim H6437 [H8802] to the corner H8179 gate H702 , four H3967 hundred H520 cubits.
24 H2091 And he took all the gold H3701 and the silver H3627 , and all the vessels H4672 [H8737] that were found H1004 in the house H430 of God H5654 with Obededom H214 , and the treasures H4428 of the king's H1004 house H1121 H8594 , the hostages H7725 [H8799] also, and returned H8111 to Samaria.
26 H3499 Now the rest H1697 of the acts H558 of Amaziah H7223 , first H314 and last H3789 [H8803] , behold, are they not written H5612 in the book H4428 of the kings H3063 of Judah H3478 and Israel?
27 H6256 Now after the time H558 that Amaziah H5493 [H8804] turned away H310 from following H3068 the LORD H7194 [H8799] they made H7195 a conspiracy H3389 against him in Jerusalem H5127 [H8799] ; and he fled H3923 to Lachish H7971 [H8799] : but they sent H3923 to Lachish H310 after H4191 [H8686] him, and slew him there.
28 H5375 [H8799] And they brought H5483 him upon horses H6912 [H8799] , and buried H1 him with his fathers H5892 in the city H3063 of Judah.
Brenton(i) 1 Amasias began to reign when he was twenty and five years old, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Joadaen of Jerusalem. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. 3 And it came to pass, when the kingdom was established in his hand, that he slew his servants who had slain the king his father. 4 But he slew not their sons, according to the covenant of the law of the Lord, as it is written, and as the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, and the sons shall not die for the fathers, but they shall die each for his own sin. 5 And Amasias assembled the house of Juda, and appointed them according to the houses of their families for captains of thousands and captains of hundreds in all Juda and Jerusalem: and he numbered them from twenty years old and upwards, and found them three hundred thousand able to go out to war, holding spear and shield. 6 Also he hired of Israel a hundred thousand mighty men for a hundred talents of silver. 7 And there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the host of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, even all the sons of Ephraim. 8 For if thou shalt undertake to strengthen thyself with these, then the lord shall put thee to flight before the enemies: for it is of the Lord both to strengthen and to put to flight. 9 And Amasias said to the man of God, But what shall I do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God said, The Lord can give thee much more than these. 10 And Amasias separated from the army that came to him from Ephraim, that they might go away to their place; and they were very angry with Juda, and they returned to their place with great wrath. 11 And Amasias strengthened himself, and took his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote there the children of Seir ten thousand. 12 And the children of Juda took ten thousand prisoners, and they carried them to the top of the precipice, and cast them headlong from the top of the precipice, and they were all dashed to pieces. 13 And the men of the host whom Amasias sent back so that they should not go with him to battle, went and attacked the cities of Juda, from Samaria to Baethoron; and they smote three thousand among them, and took much spoil. 14 And it came to pass, after Amasias had returned from smiting Idumea, that he brought home the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up for himself as gods, and bowed down before them, and he sacrificed to them. 15 And the anger of the Lord came upon Amasias, and he sent him a prophet, and he said to him, Why hast thou sought the gods of the people, which have not rescued their own people out of thine hand? 16 And it came to pass when the prophet was speaking to him, that he said to him, have I made thee king's counsellor? take heed lest thou be scourged: and the prophet forebore, and said, I know that God is disposed against thee to destroy thee, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not hearkened to my counsel. 17 And Amasias king of Juda took counsel, and sent to Joas, son of Joachaz, son of Jeu, king of Israel, saying, Come, and let us look one another in the face. 18 And Joas king of Israel sent to Amasias king of Juda, saying, The thistle that was in Libanus sent to the cedar that was in Libanus, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife; but, behold, thy wild beasts of the field that are in Libanus shall come: and the wild beasts did come, and trod down the thistle. 19 Thou hast said, Behold, I have smitten Idumea, and thy stout heart exalts thee: now stay at home; for why dost thou implicate thyself in mischief, that thou shouldest fall, and Juda with thee. 20 Nevertheless Amasias hearkened not, for it was of the Lord to deliver him into the enemy's hands, because he sought after the gods of the Idumeans. 21 So Joas king of Israel went up; and they saw one another, he and Amasias king of Juda, in Baethsamys, which is of Juda. 22 And Juda was put to flight before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent. 23 And Joas king of Israel took prisoner Amasias king of Juda, son of Joas, son of Joachaz, in Baethsamys, and brought him to Jerusalem; and he pulled down part of the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 24 And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord and with Abdedom, and the treasures of the king's house, and the hostages, and he returned to Samaria. 25 And Amasias the son of Joas king of Juda lived after the death of Joas the son of Joachaz king of Israel fifteen years. 26 And the rest of the acts of Amasias, the first and the last, Lo! are they not written in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel? 27 And at the time when Amasias departed from the Lord, then they formed a conspiracy against him; and he fled from Jerusalem to Lachis: and they sent after him to Lachis, and slew him there. 28 And they took him up on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of David.

Leeser(i) 1 When twenty and five years old did Amazyahu become king, and twenty and nine years did he reign in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Yeho’addan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what is right in the eyes of the Lord, yet not with an entire heart. 3 And it came to pass, when the kingdom was firmly established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father. 4 But their children he put not to death; but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, that the Lord had commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, nor shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin. 5 And Amazyahu gathered Judah together, and stationed them after the family divisions, after the captains over the thousands, and after the captains over the hundreds, of all Judah and Benjamin; and he numbered them from twenty years old and upward, and found them to be three hundred thousand chosen men, able to go forth to the army, that could handle spear and shield. 6 He hired also out of Israel one hundred thousand mighty men of valor for one hundred talents of silver. 7 But a man of God came unto him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, with all the children of Ephraim. 8 But if thou wilt go, and be ever so active and strong for the battle: God will cause thee to stumble before the enemy; for there is power with God to help, and to cause to stumble. 9 Then said Amazyahu to the man of God, But what is it to be done for the hundred talents which I have given to the band of Israel? And the man of God said, The Lord hath enough in his power to give thee much more than this. 10 Then did Amazyahu separate them, to wit, the band that was come to him out of Ephraim, that they might go to their place: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned to their home in burning anger. 11 And Amazyahu strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the Valley of Salt, and smote of the children of Se’ir ten thousand men. 12 And ten thousand did the children of Judah take captive alive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, so that they all were crushed. 13 But the men of the band whom Amazyahu had sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, spread themselves about in the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-choron, and smote of them three thousand persons, and plundered much spoil. 14 And it came to pass, after Amazyahu was come home from smiting the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Se’ir, and set them up unto himself as gods, and before them he used to prostrate himself and unto them he used to burn incense. 15 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amazyahu, and he sent unto him a prophet, who said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, that have not delivered their own people out of thy hand? 16 And it came to pass, as he was speaking unto him, that he said unto him, Have we ever appointed thee as a counsellor to the king? forbear this: why shouldst thou be smitten? Then did the prophet forbear; and he said, I know that God hath resolved to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel. 17 Then held Amazyahu the king of Judah a council, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoachaz, the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. 18 And Joash the king of Israel sent to Amazyahu the king of Judah, saying, The thorn-bush that was in the Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in the Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for wife. And there passed along the wild beasts that were in the Lebanon, and trod down the thorn-bush. 19 Thou hast thought, Lo, thou hast smitten Edom; and thy heart hath lifted thee up to acquire much glory: now stay in thy house; why wilt thou meddle with misfortune, that thou mayest fall, thou, and Judah with thee? 20 But Amazyahu would not hear; for it was ordained by God, in order to deliver them into the hand of Joash; because they had sought after the gods of Edom. 21 Thereupon did Joash the king of Israel go up: and they looked one another in the face, he and Amazyahu the king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated before Israel, and they fled every man to his tents. 23 And Joash the king of Israel caught Amazyahu the king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoachaz, at Beth-shemesh; and he brought him to Jerusalem, and made a breach in the wall of Jerusalem, from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner-gate, four hundred cubits. 24 And taking all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with ‘Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, and the children of the chiefs as hostages, he returned to Samaria. 25 And Amazyahu the son of Joash the king of Judah lived after the death of Joash the son of Jehoachaz the king of Israel fifteen years. 26 And the rest of the acts of Amazyahu the first and the last, behold, they are fully written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 Now from the time that Amazyahu departed from following the Lord, they raised a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem: wherefore he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there. 28 And they carried him on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
YLT(i) 1 A son of twenty and five years hath Amaziah reigned, and twenty and nine years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother is Jehoaddan of Jerusalem, 2 and he doth that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah—only, not with a perfect heart. 3 And it cometh to pass, when the kingdom hath been strong upon him, that he slayeth his servants, those smiting the king his father, 4 and their sons he hath not put to death, but did as is written in the law, in the book of Moses, whom Jehovah commanded, saying, `Fathers do not die for sons, and sons die not for fathers, but each for his own sin they die.' 5 And Amaziah gathereth Judah, and appointeth them, according to the house of the fathers, for heads of the thousands, and for heads of the hundreds, for all Judah and Benjamin; and he inspecteth them from a son of twenty years and upward, and findeth them three hundred thousand chosen ones, going forth to the host, holding spear and target. 6 And he hireth out of Israel a hundred thousand mighty ones of valour, with a hundred talents of silver; 7 and a man of God hath come in unto him, saying, `O king, the host of Israel doth not go with thee; for Jehovah is not with Israel—all the sons of Ephraim; 8 but if thou art going—do it, be strong for battle, God doth cause thee to stumble before an enemy, for there is power in God to help, and to cause to stumble.' 9 And Amaziah saith to the man of God, `And what—to do for the hundred talents that I have given to the troop of Israel?' And the man of God saith, `Jehovah hath more to give to thee than this.' 10 And Amaziah separateth them—for the troop that hath come in unto him from Ephraim to go to their own place, and their anger doth burn mightily against Judah, and they turn back to their place in the heat of anger. 11 And Amaziah hath strengthened himself, and leadeth his people, and goeth to the Valley of Salt, and smiteth the sons of Seir—ten thousand. 12 And ten thousand alive have the sons of Judah taken captive, and they bring them to the top of the rock, and cast them from the top of the rock, and all of them have been broken. 13 And the sons of the troop that Amaziah hath sent back from going with him to battle—they rush against cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-Horon, and smite of them three thousand, and seize much prey.
14 And it cometh to pass, after the coming in of Amaziah from smiting the Edomites, that he bringeth in the gods of the sons of Seir, and establisheth them to him for gods, and before them doth bow himself, and to them he maketh perfume. 15 And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Amaziah, and He sendeth unto him a prophet, and he saith unto him, `Why hast thou sought the gods of the people that have not delivered their people out of thy hand?' 16 And it cometh to pass, in his speaking unto him, that he saith to him, `For a counsellor to the king have we appointed thee? cease for thee; why do they smite thee?' And the prophet ceaseth, and saith, `I have known that God hath counselled to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened to my counsel.'
17 And Amaziah king of Judah taketh counsel, and sendeth unto Joash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, 18 `Come, we look one another in the face.' And Joash king of Israel sendeth unto Amaziah king of Judah, saying, `The thorn that is in Lebanon hath sent unto the cedar that is in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for a wife; and pass by doth a beast of the field that is in Lebanon, and treadeth down the thorn. 19 Thou hast said, Lo, I have smitten Edom; and thy heart hath lifted thee up to boast; now, abide in thy house, why dost thou stir thyself up in evil, that thou hast fallen, thou, and Judah with thee?' 20 And Amaziah hath not hearkened, for from God it is in order to give them into hand, because they have sought the gods of Edom; 21 and go up doth Joash king of Israel, and they look one another in the face, he and Amaziah king of Judah, in Beth-Shemesh, that is Judah's, 22 and Judah is smitten before Israel, and they flee—each to his tents. 23 And Amaziah king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, hath Joash king of Israel caught in Beth-Shemesh, and bringeth him in to Jerusalem, and breaketh down in the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits, 24 and taketh all the gold, and the silver, and all the vessels that are found in the house of God with Obed-Edom, and the treasures of the house of the king, and the sons of the pledges, and turneth back to Samaria. 25 And Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, liveth after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years; 26 and the rest of the matters of Amaziah, the first and the last, lo, are they not written on the books of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 And from the time that Amaziah hath turned aside from after Jehovah—they make a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fleeth to Lachish, and they send after him to Lachish, and put him to death there, 28 and lift him up on the horses, and bury him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
JuliaSmith(i) 1 The son of twenty and five years reigned Amaziah, and twenty and nine years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name Jehoaddan from Jerusalem. 2 And he will do the straight in the eyes of Jehovah, only not with a whole heart. 3 And it will be when the kingdom was strengthened over him, and he will slay his servants striking the king his father. 4 And their sons he slew not, for as written in the law in the book of Moses where Jehovah commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the sons, and the sons shall not die for the fathers, for each shall die in his sin. 5 And Amaziah will gather Judah together, and set them up for the house of the fathers for chiefs of thousands, and for chiefs of hundreds, to all Judah and Benjamin: and he will review them from the son of twenty years and above, and he will find them three hundred thousand chosen going forth to war, holding spear and shield. 6 And he will hire from Israel a hundred thousand strong of power, with a hundred talents of silver. 7 And a man of God came to him, saying, O king, the army of Israel shall not go with thee; for Jehovah is not with Israel all the sons of Ephraim. 8 For if thou goest, to be strong for war: God will cause thee to falter before the enemy, for there is power with God to help and to cause to falter. 9 And Amaziah will say to the man of God, And what to do for the hundred talents of silver which I gave to the troop of Israel? And the man of God will say, There is to Jehovah to give to thee much above this. 10 And Amaziah will separate them for the troop which came to him from Ephraim to go to their place: and their anger will kindle greatly against Judah, and they will turn back to their place in the heat of anger. 11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and he will lead out his people, and go to the valley of salt, and he will strike the sons of Seir, ten thousand. 12 And ten thousand living the sons of Judah carried away captive, and they will bring them to the head of the rock, and they will cast them down from the head of the rock, and they were rent asunder all of them. 13 And the sons of the troop which Amaziah turned back from going with him to war, and they will invade upon the cities of Judah from Shomeron and even to the house of the hollow, and he will strike of them three thousand, and they will plunder much plunder. 14 And it will be after Amaziah came from the smiting of the Edomites, and he will bring the gods of the sons of Seir, and he will set them up to him for gods, and worship before them, and burn incense to them. 15 And the anger of Jehovah will kindle against Amaziah, and he will send to him a prophet, and he will say to him, Wherefore soughtest thou the gods of the people who delivered not their people from thy hand? 16 And it will be in his speaking to him, and he will say to him, Did they give thee for counselor to the king? Desist; for thyself, wherefore shall they strike thee? And the prophet will desist, and say, I knew that God counseled to destroy thee, for thou didst this, and thou heardest not to my counsel. 17 And Amaziah king of Judah will take counsel, and will send to Joash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, we will see faces. 18 And Joash king of Israel will send to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thorn-bush which was in Lebanon sent to the cedar which was in Lebanon, saying, Thou shalt give thy daughter to my son for wife: and a beast of the field that was in Lebanon will pass by and tread down the thorn-bush. 19 Thou saidst, Behold, thou didst strike Edom; and thy heart lifted thee up to boast: now dwell in thy house; wherefore wilt thou be stirred up in evil, and thou fallest, and Judah with thee? 20 And Amaziah heard not; for it was from God, so that he will give them into the hand, for they sought the gods of Edom. 21 And Joash king of Israel will go up; and they will see faces, he and Amaziah king of Judah, in the house of the sun which was to Judah. 22 And Judah will be smitten before Israel, and they will flee a man to his tent 23 And Joash king of Israel seized Amaziah king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, in the house of the sun; and he will bring him to Jerusalem, and he will break in upon the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim, even to the gate of turning, four hundred cubits. 24 And all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels being found in the house of God with Obed-Edom, and the treasures of the king's house, and the sons of suretyship, and he will turn back to Shomeron. 25 And Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah will live after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, fifteen years. 26 And the rest of the words of Amaziah, the first and the last, behold, are they not written upon the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 And from the time that Amaziah turned away from Jehovah and they will conspire against him a conspiracy in Jerusalem; and he will flee to Lachish: and they will send after him to Lachish, and they will kill him there. 28 And they will lift him up upon horses, and bury him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
Darby(i) 1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old [when] he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and his mother`s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the sight of Jehovah, yet not with a perfect heart. 3 And it came to pass when the kingdom was established unto him, that he killed his servants who had smitten the king his father. 4 But their children he did not put to death, but [did] according to that which is written in the law in the book of Moses, wherein Jehovah commanded saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, nor shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin. 5 And Amaziah gathered Judah together and arranged them according to the fathers` houses, according to the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, throughout Judah and Benjamin; and he numbered them from twenty years old and upwards, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able for military service, that could handle spear and target. 6 He hired also a hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for a hundred talents of silver. 7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the host of Israel go with thee; for Jehovah is not with Israel, [with] all the children of Ephraim. 8 But if thou wilt go, do [it]; be strong for the battle: God will make thee fall before the enemy, for there is with God power to help and to cast down. 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what is to be done for the hundred talents which I have given to the troop of Israel? And the man of God said, Jehovah is able to give thee much more than this. 10 Then Amaziah separated them, -- the troop that was come to him out of Ephraim, -- to go home again. And their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in fierce anger. 11 But Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand. 12 And the children of Judah took ten thousand captive, alive, and brought them to the top of the cliff, and cast them down from the top of the cliff, so that they all were broken in pieces. 13 But those of the troop that Amaziah had sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah from Samaria as far as Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil. 14 And it came to pass after Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed himself down before them, and burned incense to them. 15 And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, who said to him, Why dost thou seek after the gods of a people who have not delivered their own people out of thy hand? 16 And it came to pass as he talked with him, that [Amaziah] said to him, Hast thou been made the king`s counsellor? Forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbore, and said, I know that God has determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened to my counsel. 17 And Amaziah king of Judah took counsel, and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. 18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thorn-bush that is in Lebanon sent to the cedar that is in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son as wife; and there passed by the wild beast that is in Lebanon, and trode down the thorn-bush. 19 Thou thinkest, Lo, thou hast smitten Edom; and thy heart has lifted thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou contend with misfortune, that thou shouldest fall, thou and Judah with thee? 20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it was of God, that he might deliver them into [the enemy`s] hand, because they had sought after the gods of Edom. 21 And Joash king of Israel went up; and they looked one another in the face, he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which is in Judah. 22 And Judah was routed before Israel; and they fled every man to his tent. 23 And Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and he broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 24 And he [took] all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-Edom, and the treasures of the king`s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria. 25 And Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years. 26 And the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 And from the time that Amaziah turned aside from following Jehovah, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish; and they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there. 28 And they brought him on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

1 H558 Amaziah H6242 was twenty H2568 and five H8141 years H1121 old H4427 when he began to reign; H4427 and he reigned H6242 twenty H8672 and nine H8141 years H3389 in Jerusalem: H517 and his mother's H8034 name H3086 was Jehoaddan, H3389 of Jerusalem.
2 H6213 And he did H3477 that which was right H5869 in the eyes H3068 of Jehovah, H8003 but not with a perfect H3824 heart.
3 H4467 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom H2388 was established H2026 unto him, that he slew H5650 his servants H5221 that had killed H4428 the king H1 his father.
4 H1121 But he put not their children H4191 to death, H3789 but did according to that which is written H8451 in the law H5612 in the book H4872 of Moses, H3068 as Jehovah H6680 commanded, H559 saying, H1 The fathers H4191 shall not die H1121 for the children, H1121 neither shall the children H4191 die H1 for the fathers; H376 but every man H4191 shall die H2399 for his own sin.
5 H558 Moreover Amaziah H6908 gathered H3063 Judah H6908 together, H5975 and ordered H1 them according to their fathers' H1004 houses, H8269 under captains H505 of thousands H8269 and captains H3967 of hundreds, H3063 even all Judah H1144 and Benjamin: H6485 and he numbered H6242 them from twenty H8141 years H1121 old H4605 and upward, H4672 and found H7969 them three H3967 hundred H505 thousand H977 chosen H3318 men, able to go forth H6635 to war, H270 that could handle H7420 spear H6793 and shield.
  6 H7936 He hired H3967 also a hundred H505 thousand H1368 mighty H2428 men of valor H3478 out of Israel H3967 for a hundred H3603 talents H3701 of silver.
7 H935 But there came H376 a man H430 of God H559 to him, saying, H4428 O king, H6635 let not the army H3478 of Israel H935 go H3068 with thee; for Jehovah H3478 is not with Israel, H1121 to wit, with all the children H669 of Ephraim.
8 H935 But if thou wilt go, H6213 do H2388 valiantly, be strong H4421 for the battle: H430 God H3782 will cast thee down H6440 before H341 the enemy; H430 for God H3426 hath H3581 power H5826 to help, H3782 and to cast down.
9 H558 And Amaziah H559 said H376 to the man H430 of God, H6213 But what shall we do H3967 for the hundred H3603 talents H5414 which I have given H1416 to the army H3478 of Israel? H376 And the man H430 of God H559 answered, H3068 Jehovah H3426 is H5414 able to give H7235 thee much more than this.
10 H558 Then Amaziah H914 separated H1416 them, to wit, the army H935 that was come H669 to him out of Ephraim, H3212 to go H4725 home H3212 again: H639 wherefore their anger H3966 was greatly H2734 kindled H3063 against Judah, H7725 and they returned H4725 home H2750 in fierce H639 anger.
11 H558 And Amaziah H2388 took courage, H5090 and led forth H5971 his people, H3212 and went H1516 to the Valley H4417 of Salt, H5221 and smote H1121 of the children H8165 of Seir H6235 ten H505 thousand.
12 H6235 And other ten H505 thousand H1121 did the children H3063 of Judah H7617 carry H2416 away alive, H935 and brought H7218 them unto the top H5553 of the rock, H7993 and cast them down H7218 from the top H5553 of the rock, H1234 so that they all were broken in pieces.
13 H1121 But the men H1416 of the army H558 whom Amaziah H7725 sent back, H3212 that they should not go H4421 with him to battle, H6584 fell H5892 upon the cities H3063 of Judah, H8111 from Samaria H1032 even unto Beth-horon, H5221 and smote H7969 of them three H505 thousand, H962 and took H7227 much H961 spoil.
14 H310 Now it came to pass, after H558 that Amaziah H935 was come H5221 from the slaughter H130 of the Edomites, H935 that he brought H430 the gods H1121 of the children H8165 of Seir, H5975 and set them up H430 to be his gods, H7812 and bowed down H6440 himself before H6999 them, and burned incense unto them.
15 H639 Wherefore the anger H3068 of Jehovah H2734 was kindled H558 against Amaziah, H7971 and he sent H5030 unto him a prophet, H559 who said H1875 unto him, Why hast thou sought H430 after the gods H5971 of the people, H5337 which have not delivered H5971 their own people H3027 out of thy hand?
16 H1696 And it came to pass, as he talked H559 with him, that the king said H5414 unto him, Have we made H4428 thee of the king's H3289 counsel? H2308 forbear; H5221 why shouldest thou be smitten? H5030 Then the prophet H2308 forbare, H559 and said, H3045 I know H430 that God H3289 hath determined H7843 to destroy H6213 thee, because thou hast done H8085 this, and hast not hearkened H6098 unto my counsel.
17 H558 Then Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah H3289 took advice, H7971 and sent H3101 to Joash, H1121 the son H3059 of Jehoahaz H1121 the son H3058 of Jehu, H4428 king H3478 of Israel, H559 saying, H3212 Come, H7200 let us look one another H6440 in the face.
18 H3101 And Joash H4428 king H3478 of Israel H7971 sent H558 to Amaziah H4428 king H3063 of Judah, H559 saying, H2336 The thistle H3844 that was in Lebanon H7971 sent H730 to the cedar H3844 that was in Lebanon, H559 saying, H5414 Give H1323 thy daughter H1121 to my son H802 to wife: H5674 and there passed by H7704 a wild H2416 beast H3844 that was in Lebanon, H7429 and trod down H2336 the thistle.
19 H559 Thou sayest, H5221 Lo, thou hast smitten H123 Edom; H3820 and thy heart H5375 lifteth thee up H3513 to boast: H3427 abide H1004 now at home; H1624 why shouldest thou meddle H7451 to thy hurt, H5307 that thou shouldest fall, H3063 even thou, and Judah with thee?
