¹² Not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

¹⁹ When any one hears the word of the kingdom, and understands not, then comes the evil one and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is that which was sown by the way-side.

³⁸ The field is the world. The good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; but the darnel are the sons of the evil one,

³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

²³ And the governor said: What evil then did he? But they cried the more, saying: Let him be crucified.

⁵¹ from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

³² Jesus answered them: Many good works have I showed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?

¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own; but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you: A servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my saying, they will keep yours also. ²¹ But all these things they will do to you for my name's sake, because they know not him who sent me. ²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no cloak for their sin. ²³ He that hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no other one has done, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this comes to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law: They hated me without a cause.

³⁸ Pilate says to him: What is truth? And having said this, he went out again to the Jews, and says to them: I find no fault in him. ³⁹ But ye have a custom, that I should release to you one at the passover. Do ye desire therefore that I release to you the King of the Jews? ⁴⁰ They all therefore cried out again, saying: Not this one, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they slew those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have now become the betrayers and murderers;

¹⁴ For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus; for ye also suffered the same things of your own countrymen, as they have of the Jews;

⁴ By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he received testimony that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it, being dead, he yet speaks.

²⁴ and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better than Abel.

⁴ at which thing they are astonished, as ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you;

¹³ I write to you, fathers, because ye know him that was from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because ye have overcome the evil one. I wrote to you, little children, because ye know the Father. ¹⁴ I wrote to you, fathers, because ye know him that was from the beginning. I wrote to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and ye have overcome the evil one.

⁸ He that commits sin is of the Devil; because the Devil sins from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the Devil.

¹¹ Woe to them! For they went in the way of Cain, and rushed on in the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.

⁶ And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus; and I wondered when I saw her, with great wonder.
