⁹ Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance; for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might in nothing receive harm from us.

⁷ I say to you, that so there will be joy in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, who have no need of repentance.

¹⁰ So, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents.

¹⁷ And coming to himself, he said: How many hired servants of my father have bread enough and to spare, and I perish here with hunger! ¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him: Father, I sinned against heaven, and before thee. ¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants. ²⁰ And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him. ²¹ And the son said to him: Father, I sinned against heaven, and before thee; I am no longer worthy to be called thy son. ²² But the father said to his servants: Bring forth a robe, the best, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet; ²³ and bring the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat and be merry. ²⁴ Because this my son was dead and is alive again, was lost and is found. And they began to be merry.

³² It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad; because this thy brother was dead and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

²¹ testifying, to both Jews and Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

¹² For our glorying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom, but in the grace of God, did we deport ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

¹⁶ to the one a savor of death unto death, to the other a savor of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

⁶ But God, who consoles those who are cast down, consoled us by the coming of Titus; ⁷ and not by his coming only, but also by the consolation with which he was consoled in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced the more.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance unto salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world works out death. ¹¹ For behold this very thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly manner, what earnestness it wrought in you; yea, what clearing of yourselves; yea, what indignation; yea, what fear; yea, what longing desire; yea, what zeal; yea, what avenging! In every thing ye commended yourselves as pure in the matter.

⁸ For even if I should boast somewhat more abundantly of our authority, which the Lord gave us for edification, and not for your destruction, I shall not be put to shame; ⁹ that I may not seem as if I would terrify you by my letters. ¹⁰ For his letters, says one, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.

⁸ For we have no power against the truth, but for the truth. ⁹ For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are powerful; this also we pray for, even your perfection. ¹⁰ For this cause I write these things being absent, that when present I may not use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord gave me for edification, and not for destruction.
