¹ FORASMUCH as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a narration concerning the things fully believed among us, ² as they, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, delivered them to us; ³ it seemed good to me also, having accurately traced all from the very first, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus; ⁴ that thou mightest know the certainty concerning those things wherein thou wast instructed. ⁵ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest, Zachariah by name, of the course of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. ⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. ⁷ And they had no child, because Elisabeth was barren; and they both were now far advanced in years. ⁸ And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God, in the order of his course, ⁹ it fell to his lot, according to the custom of the priest's office, to burn incense, going into the temple of the Lord. ¹⁰ And the whole multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of incense. ¹¹ And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. ¹² And Zachariah seeing him was troubled, and fear fell upon him. ¹³ But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. ¹⁴ And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. ¹⁵ For he shall be great before the Lord; and he shall not drink wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. ¹⁶ And many of the sons of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a prepared people for the Lord. ¹⁸ And Zachariah said to the angel: Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years. ¹⁹ And the angel answering said to him: I am Gabriel, that stands in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to thee, and to bring thee these glad tidings. ²⁰ And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou didst not believe thy words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. ²¹ And the people were waiting for Zachariah; and they were wondering at his long tarrying in the temple. ²² And when he came out he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he was making signs to them, and remained speechless. ²³ And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were completed, that he departed to his own house. ²⁴ And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying: ²⁵ Thus has the Lord dealt with me, in the days wherein he looked on me to take away my reproach among men. ²⁶ And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, ²⁷ to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. ²⁸ And the angel coming in to her, said: Hail, highly favored! The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. ²⁹ And she was troubled at the saying; and was considering what manner of salutation this might be. ³⁰ And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary; for thou didst find favor with God. ³¹ And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. ³² He shall be great, and shall be called Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father; ³³ and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. ³⁴ Then said Mary to the angel: How shall this be, seeing that I know not a man? ³⁵ And the angel answering said to her: The Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Highest will overshadow thee; therefore also the Holy One that is born shall be called the Son of God. ³⁶ And, behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren. ³⁷ For with God nothing shall be impossible. ³⁸ And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. ³⁹ And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill-country with haste, into a city of Judah; ⁴⁰ and entered into the house of Zachariah, and saluted Elisabeth. ⁴¹ And it came to pass, as Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. ⁴² And she spoke out with a loud voice and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. ⁴³ And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? ⁴⁴ For, behold, as the voice of thy salutation came into my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. ⁴⁵ And happy is she, who believed that there shall be a fulfillment of the things told her from the Lord. ⁴⁶ And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord; ⁴⁷ and my spirit rejoiced in God my Savior. ⁴⁸ Because he looked upon the low estate of his handmaid; for, behold, henceforth all generations will call me happy. ⁴⁹ Because the Mighty One did great things for me; and holy is his name. ⁵⁰ And his mercy is from generation to generation, to those who fear him. ⁵¹ He wrought might with his arm; he scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. ⁵² He cast down princes from thrones, and exalted those of low degree. ⁵³ The hungry he filled with good, and the rich he sent empty away. ⁵⁴ He helped Israel, his servant; to remember mercy, ⁵⁵ as he spoke to our fathers, for Abraham and for his seed forever. ⁵⁶ And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. ⁵⁷ Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. ⁵⁸ And her neighbors and her kindred heard that the Lord showed great mercy toward her; and they rejoiced with her. ⁵⁹ And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zachariah, after the name of his father. ⁶⁰ And his mother answered and said: Nay; but he shall be called John. ⁶¹ And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. ⁶² And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. ⁶³ And asking for a writing-tablet, he wrote, saying: His name is John. And they all wondered. ⁶⁴ And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue was loosed; and he spoke, blessing God. ⁶⁵ And fear came on all that dwelt around them. And all these things were told abroad in all the hill-country of Judaea. ⁶⁶ And all who heard laid them up in their hearts, saying: What then will this child be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. ⁶⁷ And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying: ⁶⁸ Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, that he visited and wrought redemption for his people; ⁶⁹ and raised up a horn of salvation for us, in the house of David his servant, ⁷⁰ (as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets of old,) ⁷¹ salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; ⁷² to show mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; ⁷³ the oath which he swore to Abraham our father, ⁷⁴ to grant to us, that without fear, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, we should serve him, ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. ⁷⁶ And also thou, O child, shalt be called Prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways, ⁷⁷ in order to give knowledge of salvation to his people in remission of their sins; ⁷⁸ through the tender mercies of our God, whereby the dayspring from on high visited us, ⁷⁹ to give light to those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, in order to guide our feet into the way of peace. ⁸⁰ And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

³¹ But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye may have life in his name.

¹ THE former narration I made, O Theophilus, concerning all things that Jesus began both to do and to teach, ² until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment, through the Holy Spirit, to the apostles whom he chose; ³ to whom also he showed himself living, after he had suffered, by many infallible proofs, during forty days appearing to them, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ And confessedly, great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifested in the flesh, was justified in the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the Gentiles, was believed on in the world, was received up in glory.

¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me; that through me the preaching might be fully accomplished, and all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

¹⁶ For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but had been eye-witnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when such a voice was borne to him from the excellent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; ¹⁸ and this voice we heard borne from heaven, being with him in the holy mount. ¹⁹ And we have more sure the prophetic word; to which ye do well that ye take heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts;

¹ THE beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, Son of God,

¹⁴ The sower sows the word.

⁴⁸ Ye are witnesses of these things.

²⁷ And ye also shall bear witness, because ye are with me from the beginning.

³ to whom also he showed himself living, after he had suffered, by many infallible proofs, during forty days appearing to them, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God.

⁸ But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and Samaria, and unto the utmost part of the earth.

²¹ Therefore, of these men, who accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, ²² beginning from John's immersion, unto the day when he was taken up from us, must one be made a witness with us of his resurrection.

²⁰ For we can not but speak the things which we saw and heard.

³⁹ And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew, hanging him on a tree. ⁴⁰ Him God raised on the third day, and showed him openly; ⁴¹ not to all the people, but to witnesses before appointed by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

¹⁶ But arise, and stand upon thy feet; for I appeared to thee for this purpose, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things which thou sawest, and of the things in which I will appear to thee;

¹⁶ that I should be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest in the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles may be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

¹ So let a man account us, as ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.

⁷ whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God, which was given to me according to the working of his power. ⁸ To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, was this grace given, to preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

¹¹ And he gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastors and teachers; ¹² for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ;

²³ if indeed ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye heard, which was preached in the whole creation which is under heaven; of which I Paul was made a minister. ²⁴ Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body, which is the church; ²⁵ of which I was made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God,

³ how shall we escape, having neglected so great a salvation; which began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard,

¹ THE elders among you I exhort, who am a fellow-elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, who am also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed;

¹⁶ For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but had been eye-witnesses of his majesty.

¹ THAT which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we looked upon, and our hands handled, concerning the Word of life; ² (and the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and report to you the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested to us;) ³ that which we have seen and have heard we report to you also, that ye also may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

⁴ But Peter rehearsed the matter to them in order, from the beginning, saying:

¹⁹ Wherefore my judgment is, that we trouble not those who from among the Gentiles are turning to God;

²⁵ it seemed good to us, having become of one mind, to choose men and send them to you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

²⁸ For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no further burden except these necessary things;

²⁶ Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix, sends greeting.

³ we accept it, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

²⁵ But he said: I am not mad, most noble Festus; but utter words of truth and soberness.

⁴⁰ But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment; and I too think that I have the Spirit of God.

¹² And concerning Apollos the brother, I besought him much to come to you with the brethren; and it was not at all his will to come at this time, but he will come when he shall have a convenient time.

²⁵ This man was instructed in the way of the Lord and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught correctly the things concerning Jesus, knowing only the immersion of John.

¹⁸ and knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;

¹⁹ Yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may also instruct others, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

⁶ But let him that is taught in the word share with him that teaches, in all good things.

¹⁵ Moreover I will endeavor that at all times ye may be able after my departure to call these things to mind. ¹⁶ For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but had been eye-witnesses of his majesty.

¹ And Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

¹⁵ And he said to them: Ye are they who justify themselves before men; but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination before God.

¹ AND Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said: Men, brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God unto this day.

¹⁶ Therefore do I also myself strive to have always a conscience void of offense toward God and men.

⁹ What then? Are we better? No, in no wise; for we before charged, that both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin. ¹⁰ As it is written: There is none righteous, no, no one; ¹¹ there is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God. ¹² They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that does good, there is not so much as one. ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips; ¹⁴ whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. ¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood. ¹⁶ Destruction and misery are in their ways; ¹⁷ and the way of peace they have not known. ¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes. ¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. ²⁰ Because by works of law no flesh shall be justified in his sight; for by law is the knowledge of sin. ²¹ But now, apart from law, a righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; ²² a righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all that believe; (for there is no difference; ²³ for all sinned, and come short of the glory of God;) ²⁴ being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; ²⁵ whom God set forth as a propitiation through faith by his blood, for the exhibition of his righteousness, because of the passing over of the sins before committed in the forbearance of God;

² Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and, hold fast the traditions, as I delivered them to you.

¹² For our glorying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom, but in the grace of God, did we deport ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

¹⁵ that ye may become blameless and simple, children of God, unreproachable, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye appear as do the heavenly lights in the world;

⁶ as to zeal, persecuting the church; as to the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. ⁷ But what things were gain to me, these I have accounted loss for Christ. ⁸ Nay more, and I account all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and account them refuse, that I may gain Christ, ⁹ and be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is of God, upon faith;

²² in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and blameless and unaccused before him;

¹³ to the end he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before God and our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

¹¹ For the saving grace of God appeared to all men, ¹² teaching us that, having denied ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; ¹³ looking for the blissful hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ; ¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and cleanse for himself a people to be his own, zealous of good works.

³ For we ourselves also were once foolish, disobedient, going astray, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. ⁴ But when the kindness and the love toward man of our Savior God appeared, ⁵ not by works of righteousness which we did, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the bathing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit; ⁶ which he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior; ⁷ that, having been justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

¹⁴ Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, be diligent that ye may be found without spot and blameless in his sight, in peace.

³ And in this we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

²⁹ If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that does righteousness has been begotten of him.

⁷ Little children, let no one deceive you. He that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

¹⁹ And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body already dead, being about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb.

¹¹ By faith Sarah herself also received power to conceive seed, even when she was past age, because she accounted him faithful who had promised.

⁶ Now these things being thus prepared, into the first tabernacle the priests enter at all times, performing the services;

¹⁴ Having therefore a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

²⁴ For Christ entered not into holy places made with hands, figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

³ And another angel came and stood over the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should give it to the prayers of all the saints, upon the golden altar which is before the throne.

¹⁹ And the angel answering said to him: I am Gabriel, that stands in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to thee, and to bring thee these glad tidings.

²⁸ And the angel coming in to her, said: Hail, highly favored! The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women.

¹⁰ And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people.

¹⁹ But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors; and having brought them forth, he said:

³ He saw in a vision, distinctly, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying to him: Cornelius! ⁴ And fixing his eyes on him, he was afraid, and said: What is it, Lord? And he said to him: Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth for ministration, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

³ And another angel came and stood over the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should give it to the prayers of all the saints, upon the golden altar which is before the throne. ⁴ And there went up the smoke of the incense to the prayers of the saints, out of the hand of the angel, before God.

¹³ And the sixth angel sounded; and I heard a voice out of the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

⁵ And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe; and they were affrighted.

²⁹ And she was troubled at the saying; and was considering what manner of salutation this might be.

⁹ And, behold, an angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were sore afraid. ¹⁰ And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people.

⁴ And fixing his eyes on him, he was afraid, and said: What is it, Lord? And he said to him: Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

¹⁷ And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand on me, saying: Fear not: I am the first and the last,

²¹ And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus; for he shall save his people from their sins.

²⁷ But straightway Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good cheer; it is I, be not afraid.

⁵ And the angel answering said to the women: Fear not ye; for I know that ye are seeking Jesus, who was crucified.

⁶ And he says to them: Be not affrighted. Ye are seeking Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is risen; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.

³⁰ And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary; for thou didst find favor with God.

⁶⁰ And his mother answered and said: Nay; but he shall be called John. ⁶¹ And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. ⁶² And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. ⁶³ And asking for a writing-tablet, he wrote, saying: His name is John. And they all wondered.

²¹ And when eight days were completed for circumcising him, his name was called Jesus; the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

³⁶ And while they were speaking these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and says to them: Peace be to you. ³⁷ But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit. ³⁸ And he said to them: Why are ye troubled? And wherefore do thoughts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. ⁴⁰ And having said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

³¹ and said: Cornelius, thy prayer was heard, and thine alms were remembered before God.

⁵⁸ And her neighbors and her kindred heard that the Lord showed great mercy toward her; and they rejoiced with her.

⁹ But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send forth my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee. ¹¹ Verily I say to you, among those born of women, there has not risen a greater than John the Immerser. But he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² And from the days of John the Immerser until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent seize upon it. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if ye are willing to receive it, he is the Elijah that should come. ¹⁵ He that has ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁶ But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like to children sitting in the markets, who call to their fellows, ¹⁷ and say: We piped to you, and ye danced not; we sang the lament, and ye did not beat the breast. ¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say: He has a demon. ¹⁹ The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a glutton and a wine-drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom was justified on the part of her children.

²⁸ For I say to you, among those born of women, no one is a greater prophet than John; but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

³³ For John the Immerser has come, neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say: He has a demon.

³⁵ He was the burning and shining lamp; and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

¹⁴ But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said to them: Men of Judaea, and all that dwell in Jerusalem, be this known to you, and hearken to my words. ¹⁵ For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, for it is the third hour of the day. ¹⁶ But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ¹⁷ And it shall be in the last days, saith God, That I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; ¹⁸ And even on my servants and on my handmaids, I will pour out of my Spirit in those days, And they shall prophesy.

¹⁵ But when it pleased God, who set me apart from my mother's womb, and called me through his grace,

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit;

¹ In those days comes John the Immerser, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, ² and saying: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³ For this is he that was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, Make straight his paths. ⁴ And he, John, had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region about the Jordan; ⁶ and they were immersed by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and ye did not believe him; but the publicans and the harlots believed him; and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

⁷⁶ And also thou, O child, shalt be called Prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways,

⁷ But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his immersion, he said to them: Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance; ⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. ¹⁰ And already the axe is laid to the root of the trees; therefore every tree that brings not forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed immerse you in water unto repentance; but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to bear; he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire; ¹² whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and will gather his wheat into the garner; but the chaff he will burn up with fire unquenchable.

¹⁴ And if ye are willing to receive it, he is the Elijah that should come.

⁴ For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.

¹¹ And he answering said: Elijah indeed comes, and will restore all things. ¹² But I say to you, that Elijah is already come, and they knew him not, but did with him whatever they would. So also is the Son of man about to suffer by them.

²⁹ And he answering said: I will not; but afterward he repented, and went. ³⁰ And he came to the other, and said likewise. And he answering said: I will, sir; and went not. ³¹ Which of the two did the father's will? They say to him: The first. Jesus says to them: Verily I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and ye did not believe him; but the publicans and the harlots believed him; and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

¹¹ And they asked him, saying: Why say the scribes that Elijah must first come? ¹² And he said to them: Elijah indeed comes first, and restores all things. And how is it written of the Son of man? That he must suffer many things, and be set at naught. ¹³ But I say to you, that Elijah also has come, and they did to him whatever they would, as it is written of him.

¹⁶ And many of the sons of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

⁷ He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be immersed by him: Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. ⁹ And now also the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore, that brings not forth good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And the multitudes asked him, saying: What then shall we do? ¹¹ He answering says to them: He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² And there came also publicans to be immersed; and they said to him: Teacher, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said to them: Exact no more than that which is appointed you. ¹⁴ And soldiers also asked him, saying: What shall we also do? And he said to them: Do violence to no one, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

¹³ who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

²¹ And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elijah? And he says: I am not. Art thou the Prophet? And he answered: No. ²² They said therefore to him: Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet. ²⁴ And they who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou immerse, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying: I immerse in water. There stands one in the midst of you, whom ye know not; ²⁷ he who comes after me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose. ²⁸ These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was immersing. ²⁹ On the morrow, he sees Jesus coming to him, and says: Behold the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world! ³⁰ This is he of whom I said: After me comes a man who is preferred before me; because he was before me.

³⁴ And I have seen, and have borne witness, that this is the Son of God.

²⁸ Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I am sent before him.

³³ Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou didst well in coming hither. Now therefore we are all present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee from the Lord.

²³ and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory;

⁹ Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ And such were some of you; but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

¹² giving thanks to the Father, who made us meet for the portion of the inheritance of the saints in light;

²¹ If a man therefore cleanse himself from these, he shall be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful for the master, prepared for every good work.

⁹ But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for a possession; that ye should show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light;

¹¹ Seeing then that all these things are dissolving, what manner of men ought ye to be, in all holy deportment and godliness; ¹² looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens being on fire will be dissolved, and the elements will melt with burning heat? ¹³ But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. ¹⁴ Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, be diligent that ye may be found without spot and blameless in his sight, in peace.

²⁸ And now, little children, abide in him; that, if he should be manifested, we may have confidence, and not turn away from him with shame at his coming.

⁴ And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given to them; and the souls of those beheaded on account of the testimony of Jesus, and on account of the word of God, and whoever did not worship the beast, neither his image, and did not receive the mark upon the forehead, or upon their hand; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

⁷ And they had no child, because Elisabeth was barren; and they both were now far advanced in years.

³⁴ Then said Mary to the angel: How shall this be, seeing that I know not a man?

¹⁰ Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

²⁶ And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

¹⁹ And he answering, says to them: O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.

¹⁴ Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they reclined at table, and upbraided their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not those who saw him after he was risen.

²² And when he came out he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he was making signs to them, and remained speechless.

⁴⁵ And happy is she, who believed that there shall be a fulfillment of the things told her from the Lord.

³ For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make void the faithfulness of God?

¹³ if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he can not deny himself.

² upon hope of eternal life, which God, who can not lie, promised before eternal ages,

¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible that God should lie, we may have strong encouragement, who fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us,

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

⁶² And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

²⁴ To him therefore Simon Peter beckons, and says to him: Say who it is of whom he speaks.

¹⁷ And beckoning to them with the hand to be silent, he related to them how the Lord brought him out of the prison. And he said: Go tell these things to James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went to another place.

³³ And they brought forward Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews thrusting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, desiring to make his defense to the people.

⁴⁰ And he having given him permission, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with the hand to the people. And a great silence ensuing, he spoke to them in the Hebrew tongue, saying:

¹³ But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

²³ And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: He shall be called a Nazarene.

⁴ And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and family of David),

⁴⁵ Philip finds Nathanael, and says to him: We have found him of whom Moses, in the law, and the prophets wrote, Jesus the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth. ⁴⁶ And Nathanael said to him: Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him: Come and see.

⁴¹ Others said: This is the Christ. But some said: Does the Christ then come out of Galilee?

¹⁶ and Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was after this manner. His mother Mary having been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child by the Holy Spirit.

²⁰ But while he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take to thee Mary thy wife; for that which is begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit. ²¹ And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus; for he shall save his people from their sins.

²³ Behold, the virgin shall be with child, And shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is interpreted, God with us.

⁴ And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and family of David), ⁵ to be registered with Mary his betrothed wife, who was with child.

⁴⁸ But he answering said to him that told him: Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?

⁴² And she spoke out with a loud voice and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he was saying these things, that a certain woman lifting up her voice from the multitude, said to him: Happy the womb that bore thee, and breasts which thou didst suck! ²⁸ And he said: Yea, rather, Happy they who hear the word of God, and keep it!

¹⁰ for I am with thee, and no one shall assail thee to hurt thee; for I have much people in this city.

⁶ to the praise of the glory of his grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the beloved;

⁴⁹ And they seeing him walking on the sea, supposed it was a spectre, and cried out; ⁵⁰ for all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and says to them: Be of good cheer; it is I, be not afraid.

⁵ And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe; and they were affrighted. ⁶ And he says to them: Be not affrighted. Ye are seeking Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is risen; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.

¹² And Zachariah seeing him was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

⁶⁶ And all who heard laid them up in their hearts, saying: What then will this child be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

¹⁹ And Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.

⁵¹ And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

¹⁷ And while Peter was doubting in himself what the vision might be which he saw, behold, the men who were sent from Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, came and stood before the gate;

³² Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

⁹ And the Lord said to Paul, through a vision in the night: Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace; ¹⁰ for I am with thee, and no one shall assail thee to hurt thee; for I have much people in this city.

²⁴ saying: Fear not, Paul; thou must stand before Caesar; and, lo, God has given thee all those who sail with thee.

³¹ What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who shall be against us?

⁶ So that we boldly say: The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear; What shall man do to me?

²⁵ and he knew her not till she brought forth a son; and he called his name Jesus.

²⁷ to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

⁴ But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth his son, born of a woman, born under law,

¹ BOOK of the generation of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

¹¹ I indeed immerse you in water unto repentance; but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to bear; he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire;

⁴² A queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

¹⁸ And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying: All power was given to me in heaven and on earth.

⁷ and cried with a loud voice, and said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, do not torment me.

⁶¹ But he was silent, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said to him: Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

¹⁵ For he shall be great before the Lord; and he shall not drink wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

³⁵ And the angel answering said to her: The Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Highest will overshadow thee; therefore also the Holy One that is born shall be called the Son of God.

¹⁶ John answered them all, saying: I indeed immerse you in water; but there comes he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loose; he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire;

³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Highest; for he is kind to the unthankful and evil.

³⁵ The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believes on the Son has everlasting life; and he that believes not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

²¹ For as the Father raises up the dead, and quickens them; so also the Son quickens whom he will. ²² For neither does the Father judge any one; but all judgment he has given to the Son; ²³ that all may honor the Son, as they honor the Father. He that honors not the Son, honors not the Father who sent him. ²⁴ Verily, verily, I say to you, he that hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has everlasting life, and comes not into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. ²⁵ Verily, verily, I say to you, an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ For as the Father has life in himself, so he gave also to the Son to have life in himself. ²⁷ And he gave him authority to execute judgment also, because he is a son of man. ²⁸ Marvel not at this; for an hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, ²⁹ and shall come forth; they that did good, to the resurrection of life, and they that did evil, to the resurrection of judgment.

⁶⁹ And we believe and know, that thou art the Holy One of God.

³⁴ The multitude answered him: We heard out of the law that the Christ abides forever; and how sayest thou: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?

³⁰ Being a prophet, therefore, and knowing that God swore to him, with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins one should sit on his throne,

³⁶ Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God made him, this Jesus whom ye crucified, both Lord and Christ.

⁴⁸ Yet the Most High dwells not in temples made with hands; as says the prophet:

¹⁷ She, having followed Paul and us, cried, saying: These men are the servants of the most high God, who announce to us the way of salvation.

⁴ who was declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord;

²⁰ which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, ²¹ far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come; ²² and subjected all things under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church, ²³ which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

⁹ Wherefore also God highly exalted him, and gave him a name which is above every name; ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of beings in heaven, and of beings on earth, and of beings under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

² in these last days spoke to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, by whom he also made the worlds; ³ who, being the brightness of his glory and the impress of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself made a cleansing of sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; ⁴ having become so much superior to the angels, as he has inherited a more excellent name than they. ⁵ For to whom of the angels said he ever: Thou art my Son, I this day have begotten thee; and again: I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son. ⁶ But when he has again brought in the first-begotten into the world, he says And let all the angels of God worship him. ⁷ And of the angels he says: Who makes his angels winds, And his ministers a flame of fire; ⁸ but of the Son: Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever; A sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom;

⁷ And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These things says the Holy, the True, he who has the key of David, he who opens, and no one shall shut, and shuts, and no one opens.

⁶ Not as though the word of God has failed. For not all they are Israel, who are of Israel;

²⁴ Then comes the end, when he delivers up the kingdom to God, the Father; when he shall have done away all rule, and all authority and power. ²⁵ For he must reign, till he has put all enemies under his feet.

²⁹ And if ye are Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, heirs according to the promise.

¹⁶ And as many as walk by this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and on the Israel of God.

³ For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God, and glory in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

⁸ but of the Son: Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever; A sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom;

¹⁵ And the seventh angel sounded; and there followed loud voices in heaven, saying: The kingdom of the world is become our Lord's, and his Christ's; and he will reign forever and ever.

⁴ And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given to them; and the souls of those beheaded on account of the testimony of Jesus, and on account of the word of God, and whoever did not worship the beast, neither his image, and did not receive the mark upon the forehead, or upon their hand; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. ⁵ The rest of the dead lived not until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. ⁶ Happy and holy is he that has part in the first resurrection; on these the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

³ And there will be no more curse. And the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it; and his servants will serve him, ⁴ and will see his face, and his name will be upon their foreheads. ⁵ And there will be no night there; and they will have no need of a lamp, nor of the light of the sun, because the Lord God will give them light; and they will reign forever and ever.

⁶ But arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

²⁰ But while he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take to thee Mary thy wife; for that which is begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit.

³ And coming to him, the tempter said: If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.

³³ And those in the ship came and worshiped him, saying: Of a truth, thou art the Son of God.

⁶³ But Jesus was silent. And the high priest answering said to him: I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God. ⁶⁴ Jesus says to him: Thou saidst it. But I say to you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.

⁵⁴ And the centurion, and they that with him were watching Jesus, on seeing the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying: Truly this was the Son of God.

²⁴ saying: What have we to do with thee, Jesus, Nazarene! Didst thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

³¹ And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. ³² He shall be great, and shall be called Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father;

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered: Rabbi; thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel.

³⁶ And as they went along the way, they came to a certain water. And the eunuch said: See, here is water; what hinders that I should be immersed?

²⁰ I have been crucified with Christ; and no longer do I live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live in the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

³ among whom we also all walked in time past in the desires of our flesh, doing the will of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as others;—

¹⁵ For we have not a high priest who can not be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but who has in all points been tempted in like manner, without sin.

²⁶ For such a high priest became us, holy, harmless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; ²⁷ who has not necessity daily, as the high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; for this he did once for all, in offering up himself. ²⁸ For the law makes men high priests who have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, makes the Son, who is perfected forever.

²⁶ But Jesus, looking on them, said to them: With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

²⁷ And Jesus, looking on them, says: With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.

²⁷ And he said: The things that are impossible with men are possible with God.

²¹ who will transform the body of our humiliation, that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working with which he is able also to subject all things to himself.

²⁰ And in respect to the promise of God he wavered not through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God, ²¹ and being fully persuaded, that what he has promised he is able also to perform.

⁶⁵ And fear came on all that dwelt around them. And all these things were told abroad in all the hill-country of Judaea.

⁴⁴ For, behold, as the voice of thy salutation came into my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

⁶⁷ And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:

¹ AND Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan; and he was led in the Sprit into the wilderness

⁸ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: Rulers of the people, and elders of Israel;

³ Therefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of good repute, full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint over this business.

⁵⁵ But, being full of the Holy Spirit, he looked intently into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, and said:

¹⁰ I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day; and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,

⁴⁸ Because he looked upon the low estate of his handmaid; for, behold, henceforth all generations will call me happy.

³⁸ saying: Blessed be the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!

²⁶ For this my heart rejoiced, and my tongue exulted; Moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope; ²⁷ Because thou wilt not abandon my soul to the underworld, Nor wilt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption. ²⁸ Thou didst make known to me the ways of life; Thou wilt make me full of joy with thy presence.

⁵ whose are the fathers, and of whom as to the flesh is Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

² looking away to the author and finisher of the faith, Jesus; who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down on the right hand of the throne of God.

¹⁴ But John sought to hinder him, saying: I have need to be immersed by thee, and dost thou come to me?

¹¹ For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

⁷ Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come to thee; but say with a word, and my servant will be healed.

⁴² And David himself says in the book of Psalms: The LORD said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, ⁴³ Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. ⁴⁴ David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son?

⁵ After that he pours water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. ⁶ He comes therefore to Simon Peter; and Peter says to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet? ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. ⁸ Peter says to him: Never shalt thou wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

¹³ Ye call me the Teacher, and the Master; and ye say well, for so I am.

²⁸ Thomas answered and said to him: My Lord, and my God.

³ doing nothing through contentiousness or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each esteeming others better than himself;

⁸ Nay more, and I account all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord; for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and account them refuse, that I may gain Christ,

²⁰ And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou didst not believe thy words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

⁴⁰ Jesus says to her: Said I not to thee, that, if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?

²⁹ Jesus says to him: Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed. Happy they who saw not, and have believed!

¹¹ and not only so, but also rejoicing in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

³¹ that, according as it is written: He that glories, let him glory in the Lord.

¹⁴ But thanks be to God, who always causes us to triumph in Christ, and makes manifest by us in every place the savor of the knowledge of him.

⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

⁸ whom having not seen ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory;

¹ PAUL, an apostle of Christ Jesus, according to the commandment of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope,

³ For this is good and acceptable in the sight of our Savior God;

³ but in its own times manifested his word in the preaching, with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of our Savior God;

¹⁰ not purloining, but showing all good faith; that they may adorn the teaching of our Savior God in all things,

¹³ looking for the blissful hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ;

⁴ But when the kindness and the love toward man of our Savior God appeared, ⁵ not by works of righteousness which we did, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the bathing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit; ⁶ which he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior;

²⁵ to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and power, before all time, and now, and forever. Amen.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he was saying these things, that a certain woman lifting up her voice from the multitude, said to him: Happy the womb that bore thee, and breasts which thou didst suck!

²⁶ For see your calling, brethren, that not many are wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; ²⁷ but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame the wise; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put to shame the things which are strong; ²⁸ and the base things of the world, and the things which are despised, did God choose, and the things which are not, that he might bring to naught things that are;

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren. Did not God choose the poor as to this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to those who love him? ⁶ But ye dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and do not they drag you before the judgment-seats?

¹³ And immediately Jesus gave them leave. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered into the swine. And the herd rushed down the steep into the sea, about two thousand, and were choked in the sea.

²⁰ Now to him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

⁸ And the four animals had each of them six wings apiece; around and within they are full of eyes; and they have no rest by day and by night, saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God the Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.

⁴ Who shall not fear, O Lord, and glorify thy name? Because thou alone art holy; because all the nations shall come and worship before thee; because thy judgments are made manifest.

⁵ And a voice came out from the throne, saying: Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye who fear him, the small and the great.

²¹ Because, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, nor gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their foolish heart was darkened.

⁵ casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;

⁵ In like manner, ye younger, submit yourselves to the elder. Yea, all of you submitting to one another, gird yourselves with humility; because, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

⁸ Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be burned up with fire because strong is the Lord God who judged her.

³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

¹⁴ I say to you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For every one that exalts himself shall be humbled; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

⁹ Let the brother of low degree glory in that he is exalted; ¹⁰ but the rich, in that he is made low; because as the flower of the grass he will pass away.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

⁶ Happy they that hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.

²¹ Happy are ye that hunger now; for ye shall be filled. Happy are ye that weep now; for ye shall laugh.

²⁴ But woe to you that are rich; for ye have received your consolation.

¹⁶ And he spoke a parable to them, saying: The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully. ¹⁷ And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have not where to store my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said: This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and will build greater; and there I will store all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said to him: Fool! this night thy soul shall be required of thee; and whose shall those things be, which thou didst provide? ²¹ So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day. ²⁰ And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died; and he was borne away by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried; ²³ and in the underworld, lifting up his eyes, being in torments, he sees Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said: Child, remember that in thy lifetime thou receivedst thy good things in full, and Lazarus in like manner his evil things; but now here, he is comforted and thou art tormented.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood, and prayed thus with himself: God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess. ¹³ And the publican, standing afar off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying: God be merciful to me, the sinner. ¹⁴ I say to you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For every one that exalts himself shall be humbled; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

²⁴ And Jesus seeing him became very sorrowful, said: How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

¹¹ And Jesus took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to those who were lying down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they desired. ¹² When they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. ¹³ Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to those who had eaten.

³⁵ Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life. He that comes to me shall never hunger, and he that believes on me shall never thirst.

²⁶ For see your calling, brethren, that not many are wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;

⁸ Already ye are filled full, already ye became rich, without us ye reigned as kings; and I would ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.

¹ COME now, ye rich, weep, wailing for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are become moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver is rusted; and the rust of them will be a witness against you, and will eat your flesh as fire. Ye heaped up treasure, in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who reaped your fields, which is fraudulently kept back by you, cries out; and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have been luxurious on the earth, and lived in pleasure; ye have nourished your hearts, in the day of slaughter. ⁶ Ye have condemned, ye have killed the just; he does not resist you.

¹⁷ Because thou sayest: I am rich, and have gotten wealth, and have need of nothing, and knowest not that thou art the wretched and the pitiable one, and poor, and blind, and naked; ¹⁸ I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest be rich, and white garments, that thou mayest be clothed, and the shame of thy nakedness not be made manifest, and to anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see.

¹⁶ They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun fall upon them, nor any heat; ¹⁷ because the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and will lead them to the fountains of the waters of life; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

⁷⁰ (as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets of old,) ⁷¹ salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; ⁷² to show mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; ⁷³ the oath which he swore to Abraham our father, ⁷⁴ to grant to us, that without fear, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, we should serve him, ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

²⁸ As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes; but as concerning the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. ²⁹ For unrepented are the gifts and the calling of God.

¹⁶ Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his seed. He says not, and to seeds, as concerning many; but as concerning one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. ¹⁷ But this I say, that a covenant before confirmed by God, the law, which came four hundred and thirty years after, does not annul, to make the promise of no effect.

⁶ And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were completed that she should bring forth. ⁷ And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swathing bands, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

¹⁴ And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

²⁵ Thus has the Lord dealt with me, in the days wherein he looked on me to take away my reproach among men.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

²⁶ And whether one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

⁸ And he gave him the covenant of circumcision; and thus he begot Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day, and Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.

⁵ circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;

⁶³ And asking for a writing-tablet, he wrote, saying: His name is John. And they all wondered.

⁶⁰ And his mother answered and said: Nay; but he shall be called John.

³³ And the demon being cast out, the dumb spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying: It was never so seen in Israel.

³² And they bring to him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. ³³ And taking him aside from the multitude he put his fingers into his ears, and spitting, touched his tongue, ³⁴ and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and says to him: Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. ³⁵ And straightway his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. ³⁶ And he charged them that they should tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more abundantly they published it; ³⁷ and were beyond measure astonished, saying: He has done all things well; he makes both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

³⁹ And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill-country with haste, into a city of Judah;

¹⁶ And fear seized on all; and they glorified God, saying: A great prophet has arisen among us; and, God has visited his people.

⁴³ And fear came upon every soul; and many wonders and signs were wrought through the apostles.

⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and expired; and great fear came on all that heard these things.

¹¹ And great fear came upon all the church, and upon all that heard these things.

¹⁷ And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

¹¹ And after three days and a half, the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon those who beheld them.

⁸⁰ And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

⁴⁰ And the child grew, and became strong, being filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

⁴⁴ Do ye let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.

²¹ And the hand of the Lord was with them; and a great number believed, and turned to the Lord.

⁴¹ And it came to pass, as Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

²¹ for prophecy was never brought by the will of man; but moved by the Holy Spirit, men spoke from God.

³⁸ And she, coming up at that very time, likewise gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

⁴⁴ and will level thee with the ground, and thy children within thee, and will not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ;

⁷ in whom we have the redemption through his blood, the remission of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his abundant mercy begot us again unto a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead;

¹⁰ blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David; Hosanna in the highest!

² which he before announced through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures, ³ concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,

¹⁶ I, Jesus, sent my angel, to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright, the morning star.

³⁶ For David himself said, in the Holy Spirit: The LORD said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, Till I put thy enemies under thy feet.

²⁶ Was it not necessary, that the Christ should suffer these things, and enter into his glory? ²⁷ And beginning from Moses, and all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

⁴⁴ And he said to them: These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and psalms, concerning me.

²¹ whom the heavens, indeed, must receive, until the times of the restoration of all things, which God spoke of by the mouth of all his holy prophets from the beginning. ²² Moses said: A Prophet will the Lord your God raise up to you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatever he shall say to you. ²³ And it shall be that every soul, that will not hear that Prophet, shall be utterly destroyed from among the people. ²⁴ And also all the prophets from Samuel, both he and they who followed, as many as spoke, also foretold these days.

²⁵ And disagreeing among themselves, they departed, after Paul had spoken one word: Well did the Holy Spirit speak through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,

² which he before announced through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

⁷ Wherefore, as the Holy Spirit says: To-day, if ye will hear his voice,

¹² to whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you they were ministering them, which now have been announced to you, through those who brought you the good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.

¹⁰ And I fell before his feet to worship him. And he said to me: See thou do it not. I am a fellow-servant of thee and of thy brethren who have the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

⁷⁴ to grant to us, that without fear, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, we should serve him,

⁸ He that commits sin is of the Devil; because the Devil sins from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the Devil.

⁵⁴ He helped Israel, his servant; to remember mercy, ⁵⁵ as he spoke to our fathers, for Abraham and for his seed forever.

²⁵ Ye are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham: And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. ²⁶ Unto you first, God, having raised up his servant Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.

²⁸ As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes; but as concerning the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.

¹⁵ Brethren, I speak after the manner of men. If a covenant has been confirmed, though it be a man's, no one sets it aside, or adds thereto.

¹³ For when God made the promise to Abraham, because he could swear by none greater, he swore by himself, ¹⁴ saying: Surely, blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. ¹⁵ And so, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise. ¹⁶ For men indeed swear by the greater; and the oath is to them an end of all gainsaying, for a confirmation. ¹⁷ Wherein God, wishing more abundantly to show to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath; ¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible that God should lie, we may have strong encouragement, who fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us,

¹³ For when God made the promise to Abraham, because he could swear by none greater, he swore by himself,

¹⁶ For men indeed swear by the greater; and the oath is to them an end of all gainsaying, for a confirmation. ¹⁷ Wherein God, wishing more abundantly to show to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath;

⁷¹ salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

²² But now, being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end everlasting life.

¹⁵ For ye did not receive the spirit of bondage, again to fear; but ye received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

⁷ For God did not give us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of chastisement.

¹⁵ and might deliver those who, through fear of death, were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

¹⁴ how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

¹⁰ Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer. Behold, the Devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye will have affliction ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.

⁴ as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him in love;

¹⁰ For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God before prepared that we should walk in them.

²⁴ and put on the new man, who was created after God in the righteousness and holiness of the truth.

¹ FURTHERMORE then, brethren, we beseech you, and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as ye received from us how ye ought to walk and to please God, as also ye are walking, ye would abound yet more.

⁷ For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in sanctification.

¹³ But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you to salvation, in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth;

⁹ who saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose, and the grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before eternal ages,

¹⁴ as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts in your ignorance; ¹⁵ but as he who called you is holy, be ye yourselves holy in all your deportment; ¹⁶ because it is written: Ye shall be holy, for I am holy.

⁴ through which he has given us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world through lust; ⁵ yea for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith fortitude; and to fortitude, knowledge; ⁶ and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, patience; and to patience, godliness; ⁷ and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. ⁸ For if these things are in you, and abound, they cause that ye shall not be inactive nor unfruitful in attaining to the full knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

³ For this is he that was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, Make straight his paths.

⁹ But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send forth my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee.

⁵ And though desiring to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they held him as a prophet.

²⁶ But if we say, From men, we fear the multitude; for all hold John as a prophet.

² as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I send forth my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; ³ the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

³² If we say, from heaven; he will say, why then did ye not believe him? But shall we say from men? They feared the people; for all held that John was verily a prophet.

¹⁶ And many of the sons of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.

³² He shall be great, and shall be called Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father;

⁴ as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, Make straight his paths. ⁵ Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall be straight, And the rough ways smooth; ⁶ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

²⁷ This is he, of whom it is written: Behold, I send forth my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee. ²⁸ For I say to you, among those born of women, no one is a greater prophet than John; but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

²³ He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.

²⁷ he who comes after me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose.

²⁴ John having first preached, before his entrance, the immersion of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ Now as John was finishing his course, he said: Whom do ye suppose me to be? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, the sandal of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.

³ the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. ⁴ John came immersing in the wilderness, and preaching the immersion of repentance unto remission of sins.

³ And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the immersion of repentance, unto remission of sins,

⁶ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

⁴⁷ Wherefore I say to thee, her many sins are forgiven; for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little. ⁴⁸ And he said to her: Thy sins are forgiven. ⁴⁹ And they who reclined with him began to say within themselves: Who is this that also forgives sins? ⁵⁰ And he said to the woman: Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.

⁷ The same came for witness, to bear witness of the light, that through him all might believe. ⁸ He was not the light; but [came] to bear witness of the light. ⁹ There was the true light, which lights every man that comes into the world.

¹⁵ John bore witness of him; and cried, saying: This was he of whom I said, He that comes after me is preferred before me, because he was before me. ¹⁶ Because out of his fullness we all received, and grace for grace. ¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

²⁹ On the morrow, he sees Jesus coming to him, and says: Behold the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world!

²⁷ John answered and said: A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. ²⁸ Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I am sent before him. ²⁹ He that has the bride is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. This my joy therefore is made full. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease. ³¹ He that comes from above is above all; he that is from the earth is of the earth, and speaks of the earth; he that comes from heaven is above all. ³² And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; and his testimony no one receives. ³³ He that received his testimony has set his seal, That God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God sent forth speaks the words of God; for he gives not the Spirit by measure.

³⁸ And Peter said to them: Repent, and be each of you immersed, upon the name of Jesus Christ, unto remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent therefore, and turn, that your sins may be blotted out, in order that the times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;

³¹ Him, as a prince and a Savior, did God exalt to his right hand, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.

⁴³ To him all the prophets bear witness, that through his name every one who believes on him shall receive remission of sins.

³⁸ Be it known to you therefore, men, brethren, that remission of sins through this man is announced to you; ³⁹ and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye were not able to be justified by the law of Moses.

⁴ Then said Paul: John indeed immersed with the immersion of repentance; saying to the people, that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

²⁵ whom God set forth as a propitiation through faith by his blood, for the exhibition of his righteousness, because of the passing over of the sins before committed in the forbearance of God;

⁶ As also David speaks of the happiness of the man, to whom God reckons righteousness, apart from works: ⁷ Happy they, whose iniquities were forgiven, And whose sins were covered; ⁸ Happy the man to whom the Lord will not reckon sin!

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes on him, should not perish, but may have everlasting life.

⁴ but God, being rich in mercy, on account of his great love wherewith he loved us, made us, ⁵ even when we were dead in sins, alive with Christ, (by grace ye are saved,)

¹⁴ Wherefore he says: Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give thee light.

⁸ For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all, with the tender affection of Jesus Christ.

¹ IF then there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort from love, if any communion of the Spirit, if any tender affection and compassion,

¹² Put on therefore, as God's chosen, holy and beloved, bowels of compassion, kindness, lowliness of mind, meekness, long-suffering,

¹⁹ And we have more sure the prophetic word; to which ye do well that ye take heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts;

¹⁷ But whoever has the world's sustenance, and sees his brother having need, and shuts up his pity from him, how abides the love of God in him?

⁹ In this was manifested the love of God in respect to us, that God has sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. ¹⁰ Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son, a propitiation for our sins.

¹⁶ The people that sat in darkness, saw great light, And to those sitting in the region and shadow of death light sprang up.

²⁸ Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest for your souls.

³² a light for a revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

⁹ There was the true light, which lights every man that comes into the world.

¹² Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.

⁵ As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

⁴⁶ I have come a light into the world, that whoever believes on me may not abide in the darkness.

¹⁸ to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may obtain forgiveness of sins, and an inheritance among the sanctified, by faith in me.

¹⁷ and the way of peace they have not known.

⁸ For ye were once darkness, but now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,—

⁴ But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you as a thief. ⁵ For all ye are sons of light, and sons of day; we are not of night, nor of darkness.

⁵ And this is the message which we have heard from him, and announce to you, That God is light, and in him there is no darkness. ⁶ If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not the truth; ⁷ but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.

¹ In those days comes John the Immerser, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

⁷ And as these were departing, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?

⁵² And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

³¹ And I knew him not; but that he might be made manifest to Israel, for this I came immersing in water.
