²⁴ And when the messengers of John had departed, he began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?

¹ In those days comes John the Immerser, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, ² and saying: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³ For this is he that was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, Make straight his paths. ⁴ And he, John, had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region about the Jordan;

⁷ And as these were departing, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they who wear soft clothing are in king's houses.

⁴ John came immersing in the wilderness, and preaching the immersion of repentance unto remission of sins. ⁵ And there went out to him all the country of Judaea, and all they of Jerusalem; and they were immersed by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁸⁰ And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

⁶ But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering; for he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and tossed. ⁷ For let not that man suppose that he shall receive anything from the Lord; ⁸ a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

¹⁷ These are wells without water, mists driven by a tempest, to whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever.

¹⁷ Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the lawless, ye fall from your own steadfastness.
