³ And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty.

³⁴ Therefore, behold, I send forth to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and some of them ye will kill and crucify, and some of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; ³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. ³⁷ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! that killest the prophets, and stonest those sent to her; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

⁴⁷ Woe to you! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ So then ye bear witness to and approve the deeds of your fathers; because they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. ⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God: I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will slay and persecute; ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

³³ But yet, I must go to-day, and to-morrow, and the day following; because it may not be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. ³⁴ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! that kills the prophets, and stones those sent to her; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

¹⁰ And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. ¹¹ And again he sent another servant; and him also, having beaten and treated him shamefully, they sent away empty. ¹² And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they slew those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have now become the betrayers and murderers;

¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us forth, and please not God, and are contrary to all men;

³⁶ And others had trial of mockings, and scourgings, and, moreover, of bonds and imprisonment. ³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword; they went about in sheep-skins and goats' skins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
