²⁷ And they answered Jesus, saying: We do not know. And he said to them: Neither do I say to you, by what authority I do these things.

³ And in the morning: A storm to-day! for the sky is red and lowering. Ye know how to discern the face of the sky, but can ye not the signs of the times?

¹⁶ Woe to you, blind guides, who say: Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is bound. ¹⁷ Fools and blind; for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ¹⁸ And, Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is bound. ¹⁹ Fools and blind; for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by all things thereon. ²¹ And he that swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells therein. ²² And he that swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits thereon. ²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye pay tithe of the mint and the dill and the cumin, and omitted the weightier things of the law, judgment, and mercy, and faith; these ought ye to have done, and not leave those undone. ²⁴ Blind guides! that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel. ²⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye cleanse the outside of the cup and the platter, but within they are full of rapacity and excess. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee! Cleanse first the inside of the cup and the platter, that its outside also may become clean. ²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly indeed appear beautiful, but within are full of bones of the dead, and of all uncleanness. ²⁸ So also ye outwardly indeed appear righteous to men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

⁷ And they answered, that they knew not whence it was. ⁸ And Jesus said to them: Neither do I say to you, by what authority I do these things.

³⁰ The man answered and said to them: Why herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not whence he is, and he opened mine eyes.

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words, and said to him: Are we also blind? ⁴¹ Jesus said to them: If ye were blind, ye would not have sin. But now ye say: We see. Your sin remains!

¹⁸ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; ¹⁹ because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God manifested it to them. ²⁰ For, from the creation of the world, his invisible things are clearly seen, being perceived by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse. ²¹ Because, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, nor gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their foolish heart was darkened. ²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools;

²⁸ And as they did not choose to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not becoming;

³ But if our gospel is vailed, it is vailed in those who perish;

⁹ [him,] whose coming is after the working of Satan, in all power and signs and lying wonders, ¹⁰ and in all deceit of unrighteousness for those who perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
