¹ My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me. ² Are there not mockers with me? and does not my eye continue in their provocation? ³ Lay down now, put me in a surety with you; who is he that will strike hands with me? ⁴ For you have hid their heart from understanding: therefore shall you not exalt them. ⁵ He that speaks flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail. ⁶ He has made me also a byword of the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret. ⁷ My eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow. ⁸ Upright men shall be astonished at this, and the innocent shall stir up himself against the hypocrite. ⁹ The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. ¹⁰ But as for you all, do you return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you. ¹¹ My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart. ¹² They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness. ¹³ If I wait, the grave is my house: I have made my bed in the darkness. ¹⁴ I have said to corruption, You are my father: to the worm, You are my mother, and my sister. ¹⁵ And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? ¹⁶ They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is my end, that I should prolong my life?

¹³ If I wait, the grave is my house: I have made my bed in the darkness. ¹⁴ I have said to corruption, You are my father: to the worm, You are my mother, and my sister.

¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife, though I entreated for the children's sake of my own body.

¹⁶ After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

³ For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draws near to the grave. ⁴ I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that has no strength: ⁵ Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom you remember no more: and they are cut off from your hand.

¹⁰ I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years. ¹¹ I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world. ¹² My age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night will you make an end of me. ¹³ I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night will you make an end of me. ¹⁴ Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: my eyes fail with looking upward: O LORD, I am oppressed; undertake for me.

¹⁶ For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.

⁶ And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

⁴ I am as one mocked of his neighbor, who calls on God, and he answers him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn.

⁹ Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocks another, do you so mock him?

²⁰ My friends scorn me: but my eye pours out tears to God.

³ Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

¹³ His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily, as one that mourns for his mother. ¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yes, the attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not: ¹⁶ With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed on me with their teeth.

¹ He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

³⁹ And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ And saying, You that destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself. If you be the Son of God, come down from the cross. ⁴¹ Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, ⁴² He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. ⁴³ He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. ⁴⁴ The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

⁹ I will be surety for him; of my hand shall you require him: if I bring him not to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame for ever:

³² For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, If I bring him not to you, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

³³ Neither is there any judge between us, that might lay his hand on us both.

¹²² Be surety for your servant for good: let not the proud oppress me.

¹¹ So shall your poverty come as one that travels, and your want as an armed man.

¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hates indebtedness is sure.

¹⁸ A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes surety in the presence of his friend.

¹⁶ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

²⁶ Be not you one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.

³¹ And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray you, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

¹⁴ And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil on Absalom.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, Are you made of the king's counsel? forbear; why should you be smitten? Then the prophet declined, and said, I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not listened to my counsel.

¹⁴ The LORD has mingled a perverse spirit in the middle thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes.

¹¹ He answered and said to them, Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

⁸ (According as it is written, God has given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) to this day.

²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

⁵ You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

⁶⁵ And among these nations shall you find no ease, neither shall the sole of your foot have rest: but the LORD shall give you there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:

¹² Notwithstanding in your days I will not do it for David your father's sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of your son.

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

²¹ Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles to man. ²² For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

² They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. ³ The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaks proud things:

¹⁹ He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flatters with his lips.

⁵ A man that flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

¹⁷ As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.

⁵ For neither at any time used we flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness:

²⁷ Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and did not tell me, that I might have sent you away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?

⁷ Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

⁹ And now am I their song, yes, I am their byword.

¹⁴ You make us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

¹² And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

⁸ And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face.

¹⁶ My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death;

⁷ My eye is consumed because of grief; it waxes old because of all my enemies.

⁹ Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: my eye is consumed with grief, yes, my soul and my belly. ¹⁰ For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

²³ I am gone like the shadow when it declines: I am tossed up and down as the locust.

¹² For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.

¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

³⁰ That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.

¹² Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. ¹³ Truly I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence. ¹⁴ For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning. ¹⁵ If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of your children.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regards; and there be higher than they.

¹³ You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and can not look on iniquity: why look you on them that deal treacherously, and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man that is more righteous than he?

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing you put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, see, we turn to the Gentiles.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

⁵ Said he not to me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands have I done this.

³⁰ He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of your hands.

⁴ He that has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence: so will I compass your altar, O LORD:

¹³ Truly I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence.

⁷ They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appears before God.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more to the perfect day.

¹⁶ A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident.

¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil;

⁸ And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. ⁹ No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: ¹⁰ And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy on their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

²⁹ He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increases strength. ³⁰ Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: ³¹ But they that wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

² And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashed, hands, they found fault.

⁹ And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest on me. ¹⁰ Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

⁵ Who are kept by the power of God through faith to salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

²⁹ Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yes, return again, my righteousness is in it.

² No doubt but you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

⁹ What know you, that we know not? what understand you, which is not in us?

⁴ For you have hid their heart from understanding: therefore shall you not exalt them.

⁹ Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

¹⁸ Then shall you return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that serves him not.

⁵ I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brothers?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

²⁵ Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good. ²⁶ They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hastens to the prey.

⁹ A man's heart devises his way: but the LORD directs his steps.

²¹ There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you go.

¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nothing; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

¹⁰ I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.

³⁷ Who is he that said, and it comes to pass, when the Lord commands it not?

¹³ Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that oftentimes I purposed to come to you, (but was let till now,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

¹⁵ And in this confidence I was minded to come to you before, that you might have a second benefit; ¹⁶ And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia to you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea. ¹⁷ When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yes yes, and no no?

¹³ Go to now, you that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: ¹⁴ Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. ¹⁵ For that you ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, Would God it were even! and at even you shall say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of your heart with which you shall fear, and for the sight of your eyes which you shall see.

³ So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me. ⁴ When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro to the dawning of the day.

¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaints; ¹⁴ Then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

¹⁴ The murderer rising with the light kills the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. ¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguises his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.

¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,

²¹ Before I go from where I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death; ²² A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

¹⁴ If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

²³ For I know that you will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

¹⁴ Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

⁸ If I ascend up into heaven, you are there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there.

² He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

²⁵ The LORD is good to them that wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. ²⁶ It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

²⁸ And he, as a rotten thing, consumes, as a garment that is moth eaten.

²⁶ And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

²⁶ They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

³² Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet to him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

²⁰ The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.

³⁰ My skin is black on me, and my bones are burned with heat.

¹⁰ For you will not leave my soul in hell; neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption.

⁹ That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

¹¹ Your pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of your viols: the worm is spread under you, and the worms cover you.

²⁷ Because you will not leave my soul in hell, neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption. ²⁸ You have made known to me the ways of life; you shall make me full of joy with your countenance. ²⁹ Men and brothers, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us to this day. ³⁰ Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; ³¹ He seeing this before spoke of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

³⁴ And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. ³⁵ Why he said also in another psalm, You shall not suffer your Holy One to see corruption. ³⁶ For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid to his fathers, and saw corruption: ³⁷ But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

⁴² So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:

⁵³ For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. ⁵⁴ So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

⁶ Is not this your fear, your confidence, your hope, and the uprightness of your ways?

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain my own ways before him.

¹⁰ He has destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and my hope has he removed like a tree.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

¹³ It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength. ¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.

¹⁸ He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. ¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain on his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: ²⁰ So that his life abhors bread, and his soul dainty meat. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. ²² Yes, his soul draws near to the grave, and his life to the destroyers. ²³ If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man his uprightness: ²⁴ Then he is gracious to him, and said, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. ²⁵ His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth: ²⁶ He shall pray to God, and he will be favorable to him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render to man his righteousness. ²⁷ He looks on men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; ²⁸ He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

⁴ I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that has no strength: ⁵ Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom you remember no more: and they are cut off from your hand. ⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. ⁷ Your wrath lies hard on me, and you have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah. ⁸ You have put away my acquaintance far from me; you have made me an abomination to them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

⁷ Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit fails: hide not your face from me, lest I be like to them that go down into the pit.

¹⁷ Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but you have in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for you have cast all my sins behind your back. ¹⁸ For the grave cannot praise you, death can not celebrate you: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for your truth.

¹¹ Then he said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.

⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raises the dead:
