² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproves God, let him answer it.

¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly? ¹² Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck?

²⁰ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul;

²³ Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God has hedged in?

¹² Am I a sea, or a whale, that you set a watch over me?

¹⁹ How long will you not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ I have sinned; what shall I do to you, O you preserver of men? why have you set me as a mark against you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and you shall seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause. ¹⁸ He will not suffer me to take my breath, but fills me with bitterness.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. ³³ Neither is there any judge between us, that might lay his hand on us both. ³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me: ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and shine on the counsel of the wicked? ⁴ Have you eyes of flesh? or see you as man sees? ⁵ Are your days as the days of man? are your years as man's days, ⁶ That you enquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin? ⁷ You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me, and you will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe to me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see you my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself marvelous on me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me; changes and war are against me.

²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me: and let not your dread make me afraid. ²² Then call you, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer you me. ²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin. ²⁴ Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy? ²⁵ Will you break a leaf driven to and fro? and will you pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me to possess the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ You put my feet also in the stocks, and look narrowly to all my paths; you set a print on the heels of my feet.

¹⁶ For now you number my steps: do you not watch over my sin? ¹⁷ My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and you sew up my iniquity.

¹¹ God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers compass me round about, he splits my reins asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach on breach, he runs on me like a giant. ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; ¹⁷ Not for any injustice in my hands: also my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ O earth, cover not you my blood, and let my cry have no place. ¹⁹ Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high. ²⁰ My friends scorn me: but my eye pours out tears to God. ²¹ O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbor!

⁶ Know now that God has overthrown me, and has compassed me with his net. ⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment. ⁸ He has fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He has destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and my hope has he removed like a tree. ¹¹ He has also kindled his wrath against me, and he counts me to him as one of his enemies.

² As God lives, who has taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who has vexed my soul;

²¹ You are become cruel to me: with your strong hand you oppose yourself against me.

¹³ Why do you strive against him? for he gives not account of any of his matters.

¹⁰ That which has been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

¹⁴ With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding?

⁹ Woe to him that strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashions it, What make you? or your work, He has no hands? ¹⁰ Woe to him that said to his father, What beget you? or to the woman, What have you brought forth? ¹¹ Thus said the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command you me.

⁸ He is near that justifies me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is my adversary? let him come near to me.

² What mean you, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

¹¹ And when they had received it, they murmured against the manager of the house,

¹⁹ You will say then to me, Why does he yet find fault? For who has resisted his will? ²⁰ No but, O man, who are you that reply against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus? ²¹ Has not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel to honor, and another to dishonor? ²² What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: ²³ And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared to glory,

³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord? or who has been his counselor? ³⁵ Or who has first given to him, and it shall be recompensed to him again? ³⁶ For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

¹⁶ For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

²² Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
