¹ Call now, if there be any that will answer you; and to which of the saints will you turn? ² For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one. ³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eats up, and takes it even out of the thorns, and the robber swallows up their substance. ⁶ Although affliction comes not forth of the dust, neither does trouble spring out of the ground; ⁷ Yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward. ⁸ I would seek to God, and to God would I commit my cause: ⁹ Which does great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number: ¹⁰ Who gives rain on the earth, and sends waters on the fields: ¹¹ To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety. ¹² He disappoints the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the fraudulent is carried headlong. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But he saves the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and iniquity stops her mouth. ¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects: therefore despise not you the chastening of the Almighty: ¹⁸ For he makes sore, and binds up: he wounds, and his hands make whole. ¹⁹ He shall deliver you in six troubles: yes, in seven there shall no evil touch you. ²⁰ In famine he shall redeem you from death: and in war from the power of the sword. ²¹ You shall be hid from the whip of the tongue: neither shall you be afraid of destruction when it comes. ²² At destruction and famine you shall laugh: neither shall you be afraid of the beasts of the earth. ²³ For you shall be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. ²⁴ And you shall know that your tabernacle shall be in peace; and you shall visit your habitation, and shall not sin. ²⁵ You shall know also that your seed shall be great, and your offspring as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ You shall come to your grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn comes in in his season. ²⁷ See this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know you it for your good.

² And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir to them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them. ³ Yes, he loved the people; all his saints are in your hand: and they sat down at your feet; every one shall receive of your words.

¹⁸ Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:

⁸ Have you heard the secret of God? and do you restrain wisdom to yourself? ⁹ What know you, that we know not? what understand you, which is not in us? ¹⁰ With us are both the gray headed and very aged men, much elder than your father.

¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his saints; yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

³ But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

¹⁶ They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

¹ Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.

²¹ Produce your cause, said the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, said the King of Jacob. ²² Let them bring them forth, and show us what shall happen: let them show the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come. ²³ Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods: yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

¹ Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

¹ Why seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

¹ And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

⁸ And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? ⁹ And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

⁴ He tears himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for you? and shall the rock be removed out of his place?

¹ The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good.

⁴ I said to the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:

⁶ A brutish man knows not; neither does a fool understand this.

¹⁷ Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

²² How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit to you, I will make known my words to you.

⁵ O you simple, understand wisdom: and, you fools, be you of an understanding heart.

¹⁶ A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covers shame.

⁹ Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

¹¹ Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.

⁹ And God said to Jonah, Do you well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even to death.

⁸ But to them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

⁶ For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

¹⁵ Cursed be the man that makes any graven or molten image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and puts it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen. ¹⁶ Cursed be he that sets light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. ¹⁷ Cursed be he that removes his neighbor's landmark. And all the people shall say, Amen. ¹⁸ Cursed be he that makes the blind to wander out of the way. And all the people shall say, Amen. ¹⁹ Cursed be he that perverts the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁰ Cursed be he that lies with his father's wife; because he uncovers his father's skirt. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²¹ Cursed be he that lies with any manner of beast. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²² Cursed be he that lies with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²³ Cursed be he that lies with his mother in law. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁴ Cursed be he that smites his neighbor secretly. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁵ Cursed be he that takes reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁶ Cursed be he that confirms not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen.

¹⁸ He is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholds not the way of the vineyards.

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has gained, when God takes away his soul?

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, see, he was not: yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.

²⁵ Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

³ For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride compasses them about as a chain; violence covers them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. ⁸ They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. ⁹ They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth.

¹⁸ Surely you did set them in slippery places: you cast them down into destruction. ¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one wakes; so, O Lord, when you wake, you shall despise their image.

⁷ When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever:

¹ Righteous are you, O LORD, when I plead with you: yet let me talk with you of your judgments: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? why are all they happy that deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them, yes, they have taken root: they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their reins. ³ But you, O LORD, know me: you have seen me, and tried my heart toward you: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

²⁰ For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his position as bishop let another take.

⁵ You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

¹⁹ And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell you.

¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.

⁴ If your children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression;

⁷ You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

² Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.

⁹ Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the extortionist catch all that he has; and let the strangers spoil his labor. ¹² Let there be none to extend mercy to him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

¹⁵⁵ Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not your statutes.

⁵ Happy is the man that has his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

¹² For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

⁴ Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think you that they were sinners above all men that dwelled in Jerusalem? ⁵ I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.

³³ The fruit of your land, and all your labors, shall a nation which you know not eat up; and you shall be only oppressed and crushed always:

⁵¹ And he shall eat the fruit of your cattle, and the fruit of your land, until you be destroyed: which also shall not leave you either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of your cows, or flocks of your sheep, until he have destroyed you.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; ⁴ And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. ⁵ For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it. ⁶ And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried to the LORD.

¹¹ And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹¹ Why the LORD brought on them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell on them, and took them away; yes, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell you.

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell on the camels, and have carried them away, yes, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell you.

³ And the LORD said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God, and eschews evil? and still he holds fast his integrity, although you moved me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁶ The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God brings abundantly.

⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks on a snare. ⁹ The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. ¹⁰ The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

⁸ The LORD has sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give your corn to be meat for your enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink your wine, for the which you have labored:

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me, he has crushed me, he has made me an empty vessel, he has swallowed me up like a dragon, he has filled his belly with my delicates, he has cast me out.

⁴⁴ And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more to him: yes, the wall of Babylon shall fall.

⁵ The LORD was as an enemy: he has swallowed up Israel, he has swallowed up all her palaces: he has destroyed his strong holds, and has increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

¹⁶ All your enemies have opened their mouth against you: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it has no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.

²⁷ Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD has not done all this.

⁹ And see, if it goes up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he has done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.

²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hides his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:

⁷ For we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath are we troubled.

⁷ I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

³⁸ Out of the mouth of the most High proceeds not evil and good?

⁴ They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springs up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

⁶ Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD has not done it?

¹⁵ Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

¹⁷ And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it: cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life; ¹⁸ Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to you; and you shall eat the herb of the field; ¹⁹ In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return to the ground; for out of it were you taken: for dust you are, and to dust shall you return.

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

⁸ All things are full of labor; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

²² For what has man of all his labor, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he has labored under the sun?

¹⁵ As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labor, which he may carry away in his hand. ¹⁶ And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit has he that has labored for the wind? ¹⁷ All his days also he eats in darkness, and he has much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.

¹³ There has no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.

⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands; ⁸ And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape. ⁹ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which said to me, Return to your country, and to your kindred, and I will deal well with you: ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which you have showed to your servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands. ¹¹ Deliver me, I pray you, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children. ¹² And you said, I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

¹² And when he was in affliction, he sought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, ¹³ And prayed to him: and he was entreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.

⁵ If you would seek to God betimes, and make your supplication to the Almighty;

²¹ Acquaint now yourself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come to you.

²⁷ You shall make your prayer to him, and he shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows.

⁵ Commit your way to the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

¹⁵ And call on me in the day of trouble: I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.

¹ I cried to God with my voice, even to God with my voice; and he gave ear to me. ² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.

¹ Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, ² And said, I cried by reason of my affliction to the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and you heard my voice. ³ For you had cast me into the deep, in the middle of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all your billows and your waves passed over me. ⁴ Then I said, I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple. ⁵ The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. ⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. ⁷ When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.

¹² For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him against that day.

²³ Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judges righteously:

¹⁹ Why let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as to a faithful Creator.

¹⁰ Which does great things past finding out; yes, and wonders without number.

⁷ Can you by searching find out God? can you find out the Almighty to perfection? ⁸ It is as high as heaven; what can you do? deeper than hell; what can you know? ⁹ The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

⁵ Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof. ⁶ Hell is naked before him, and destruction has no covering. ⁷ He stretches out the north over the empty place, and hangs the earth on nothing. ⁸ He binds up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. ⁹ He holds back the face of his throne, and spreads his cloud on it. ¹⁰ He has compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end. ¹¹ The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. ¹² He divides the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smites through the proud. ¹³ By his spirit he has garnished the heavens; his hand has formed the crooked serpent. ¹⁴ See, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

⁵ God thunders marvelously with his voice; great things does he, which we cannot comprehend.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

⁵ Many, O LORD my God, are your wonderful works which you have done, and your thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order to you: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

¹⁸ Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only does wondrous things.

¹⁰ For you are great, and do wondrous things: you are God alone.

¹⁸ If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with you.

²⁸ Have you not known? have you not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

²⁶ When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:

²⁸ Which the clouds do drop and distil on man abundantly.

²⁶ To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? ²⁸ Has the rain a father? or who has begotten the drops of dew?

⁹ You visit the earth, and water it: you greatly enrich it with the river of God, which is full of water: you prepare them corn, when you have so provided for it. ¹⁰ You water the ridges thereof abundantly: you settle the furrows thereof: you make it soft with showers: you bless the springing thereof. ¹¹ You crown the year with your goodness; and your paths drop fatness.

⁸ Who covers the heaven with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow on the mountains.

²⁴ Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that gives rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

¹³ When he utters his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightning with rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasures.

²² Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? are not you he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait on you: for you have made all these things.

⁷ And also I have withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain on one city, and caused it not to rain on another city: one piece was rained on, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.

¹⁷ Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

²⁷ The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before you; and shall say, Destroy them.

⁷ The LORD makes poor, and makes rich: he brings low, and lifts up. ⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he has set the world on them.

¹⁴ Because he has set his love on me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he has known my name.

⁴¹ Yet sets he the poor on high from affliction, and makes him families like a flock.

⁷ He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy out of the dunghill;

²⁴ And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

⁵² He has put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. ⁵³ He has filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he has sent empty away.

²¹ Blessed are you that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are you that weep now: for you shall laugh.

⁹ Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

⁶ But he gives more grace. Why he said, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁷ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again to a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

¹⁰ But the God of all grace, who has called us to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that you have suffered a while, make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you.

¹⁵ And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one to his work.

¹⁶ With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his. ¹⁷ He leads counsellors away spoiled, and makes the judges fools.

¹¹ For they intended evil against you: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.

¹⁰ The LORD brings the counsel of the heathen to nothing: he makes the devices of the people of none effect. ¹¹ The counsel of the LORD stands for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

¹⁷ For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholds the righteous.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nothing; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

³ And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the middle thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.

³⁶ Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

¹¹ And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the LORD has sent his angel, and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

¹² And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. ¹³ And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy. ¹⁴ And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul. ¹⁵ Now therefore you with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down to you to morrow, as though you would inquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him. ¹⁶ And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul. ¹⁷ Then Paul called one of the centurions to him, and said, Bring this young man to the chief captain: for he has a certain thing to tell him. ¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me to him, and prayed me to bring this young man to you, who has something to say to you. ¹⁹ Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that you have to tell me? ²⁰ And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire you that you would bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would inquire somewhat of him more perfectly. ²¹ But do not you yield to them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from you. ²² So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See you tell no man that you have showed these things to me.

³¹ And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray you, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

³⁴ But if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father's servant till now, so will I now also be your servant: then may you for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.

²³ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and got him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulcher of his father.

⁴ And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king's house, to speak to the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him. ⁵ And the king's servants said to him, Behold, Haman stands in the court. And the king said, Let him come in. ⁶ So Haman came in. And the king said to him, What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honor more than to myself? ⁷ And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king delights to honor, ⁸ Let the royal apparel be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides on, and the crown royal which is set on his head: ⁹ And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that they may array the man with whom the king delights to honor, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor. ¹⁰ Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as you have said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew, that sits at the king's gate: let nothing fail of all that you have spoken. ¹¹ Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

²⁵ But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

¹⁵ He made a pit, and dig it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ His mischief shall return on his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down on his own pate.

¹⁵ The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. ¹⁶ The LORD is known by the judgment which he executes: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

²⁶ With the pure you will show yourself pure; and with the fraudulent you will show yourself devious.

⁷ For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have dig for my soul. ⁸ Let destruction come on him at unawares; and let his net that he has hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall.

³² For the fraudulent is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.

⁵¹ He has showed strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

¹⁹ For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. ²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness.

²⁹ And you shall grope at noonday, as the blind gropes in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways: and you shall be only oppressed and spoiled ever more, and no man shall save you.

²⁵ They grope in the dark without light, and he makes them to stagger like a drunken man.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noon day as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.

⁹ And it shall come to pass in that day, said the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

¹⁴ You have seen it; for you behold mischief and spite, to requite it with your hand: the poor commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.

¹⁷ LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble: you will prepare their heart, you will cause your ear to hear:

¹⁰ All my bones shall say, LORD, who is like to you, which deliver the poor from him that is too strong for him, yes, the poor and the needy from him that spoils him?

⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

¹² For he shall deliver the needy when he cries; the poor also, and him that has no helper. ¹³ He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.

³¹ For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.

¹² I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

⁷ But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that you may know how that the LORD does put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he has set the world on them. ⁹ He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

¹⁸ For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.

¹¹ But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that swears by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

⁴² The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

³² What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD has founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.

¹² Turn you to the strong hold, you prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double to you;

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law said, it said to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

¹² Blessed is the man whom you chasten, O LORD, and teach him out of your law;

¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: ¹² For whom the LORD loves he corrects; even as a father the son in whom he delights.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn you me, and I shall be turned; for you are the LORD my God.

⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to children, My son, despise not you the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are rebuked of him: ⁶ For whom the Lord loves he chastens, and whips every son whom he receives. ⁷ If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chastens not? ⁸ But if you be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are you bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they truly for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them which are exercised thereby.

¹² Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him.

¹¹ Behold, we count them happy which endure. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

³⁹ See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

⁶ The LORD kills, and makes alive: he brings down to the grave, and brings up.

³ He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

²⁶ Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD binds up the breach of his people, and heals the stroke of their wound.

¹ Come, and let us return to the LORD: for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has smitten, and he will bind us up.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

³ Surely he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. ⁴ He shall cover you with his feathers, and under his wings shall you trust: his truth shall be your shield and buckler. ⁵ You shall not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flies by day; ⁶ Nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness; nor for the destruction that wastes at noonday. ⁷ A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you. ⁸ Only with your eyes shall you behold and see the reward of the wicked. ⁹ Because you have made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, your habitation; ¹⁰ There shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.

¹⁶ For a just man falls seven times, and rises up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

⁸ For we would not, brothers, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life:

⁹ The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust to the day of judgment to be punished:

⁷ And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

³ Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.

¹⁹ To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

¹⁹ They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

⁷ None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

¹⁰ It is he that gives salvation to kings: who delivers David his servant from the hurtful sword.

³ The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casts away the substance of the wicked.

¹⁶ He shall dwell on high: his place of defense shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be your plagues; O grave, I will be your destruction: repentance shall be hid from my eyes.

¹⁷ Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

⁶ And you shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that you be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

²⁰ You shall hide them in the secret of your presence from the pride of man: you shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

²¹ The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

⁴ My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁵ You shall not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flies by day; ⁶ Nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness; nor for the destruction that wastes at noonday. ⁷ A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.

¹⁸ There is that speaks like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, said the LORD.

¹⁸ Then said they, Come and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed of mankind: ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

²¹ This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion has despised you, and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

¹³ You shall tread on the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shall you trample under feet.

⁹ No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there:

²⁵ The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, said the LORD.

²⁵ And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

¹⁸ And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.

⁶ And I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

¹² They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. ¹³ You shall tread on the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shall you trample under feet.

⁶ The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatted calf together; and a little child shall lead them. ⁷ And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. ⁸ And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. ⁹ They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁵ If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts: ¹⁶ Though these three men were in it, as I live, said the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.

²² My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: for as much as before him innocence was found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no hurt.

³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, ³⁹ Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁶ Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

³ So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

⁶ If you were pure and upright; surely now he would awake for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.

¹⁵ It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered on his habitation.

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knows not God.

⁷ Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, are mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God on them.

¹³ His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.

¹⁰ There shall no evil befall you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.

⁴⁰ He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.

⁷ The LORD shall preserve you from all evil: he shall preserve your soul. ⁸ The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even for ever more.

⁵ And the LORD will create on every dwelling place of mount Zion, and on her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for on all the glory shall be a defense. ⁶ And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the day time from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.

⁵ And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if you be able to number them: and he said to him, So shall your seed be.

⁹ For I will have respect to you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you.

⁴ Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your cows, and the flocks of your sheep.

¹³ He had also seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brothers. ¹⁶ After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

¹⁶ There shall be an handful of corn in the earth on the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

² His seed shall be mighty on earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

³ See, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. ⁴ As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. ⁵ Happy is the man that has his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

³ Your wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of your house: your children like olive plants round about your table. ⁴ Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that fears the LORD. ⁵ The LORD shall bless you out of Zion: and you shall see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life. ⁶ Yes, you shall see your children's children, and peace on Israel.

³ For I will pour water on him that is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground: I will pour my spirit on your seed, and my blessing on your offspring: ⁴ And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

¹⁵ And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.

⁸ Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.

¹⁶ After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

¹⁶ With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

¹¹ For by me your days shall be multiplied, and the years of your life shall be increased.

²⁷ The fear of the LORD prolongs days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

¹³ To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command you this day for your good?

⁸ For inquire, I pray you, of the former age, and prepare yourself to the search of their fathers: ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow:) ¹⁰ Shall not they teach you, and tell you, and utter words out of their heart?

² No doubt but you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

¹⁷ I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

² Can a man be profitable to God, as he that is wise may be profitable to himself?

¹¹ Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst you searched out what to say. ¹² Yes, I attended to you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:

² The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.

³ Yes, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

¹² If you be wise, you shall be wise for yourself: but if you scorn, you alone shall bear it.
