⁵ Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

³ The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

³¹ The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.

¹ Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in: behold, he shall come, said the LORD of hosts.

¹ For, behold, the day comes, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yes, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that comes shall burn them up, said the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if you will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

¹⁰ And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? ¹¹ And Jesus answered and said to them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. ¹² But I say to you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done to him whatever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. ¹³ Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist.

⁴⁷ Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calls for Elias. ⁴⁸ And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. ⁴⁹ The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

¹¹ And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? ¹² And he answered and told them, Elias truly comes first, and restores all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nothing. ¹³ But I say to you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done to him whatever they listed, as it is written of him.

¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

²⁶ But what went you out for to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, which shall prepare your way before you. ²⁸ For I say to you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

³⁰ And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

²¹ And they asked him, What then? Are you Elias? And he said, I am not. Are you that prophet? And he answered, No.

²⁵ And they asked him, and said to him, Why baptize you then, if you be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

¹⁹ And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: ²⁰ The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come:

¹⁷ For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
