²⁹ But this I say, brethren, the time is shortened, that henceforth both those that have wives may be as though they had none;

¹ Man, that is born of a woman,
Is of few days, and full of trouble. ² He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down:
He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

⁴ Jehovah, make me to know mine end,
And the measure of my days, what it is;
Let me know how frail I am. ⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days [as] handbreadths;
And my life-time is as nothing before thee:
Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. [Selah ⁶ Surely every man walketh in a vain show;
Surely they are disquieted in vain:
He heapeth up [riches], and knoweth not who shall gather them. ⁷ And now, Lord, what wait I for?
My hope is in thee.

⁵ Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep:
In the morning they are like grass which groweth up. ⁶ In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up;
In the evening it is cut down, and withereth. ⁷ For we are consumed in thine anger,
And in thy wrath are we troubled. ⁸ Thou hast set our iniquities before thee,
Our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in thy wrath:
We bring our years to an end as a sigh. ¹⁰ The days of our years are threescore years and ten,
Or even by reason of strength fourscore years;
Yet is their pride but labor and sorrow;
For it is soon gone, and we fly away.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. ¹⁶ For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone;
And the place thereof shall know it no more.

¹² For who knoweth what is good for man in [his] life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

¹⁰ Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.

⁷ and the dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the spirit returneth unto God who gave it. ⁸ Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; all is vanity.

¹³ [This is] the end of the matter; all hath been heard: Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole [duty] of man. ¹⁴ For God will bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

¹ Behold, Jehovah maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. ² And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the creditor, so with the debtor; as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest to him.

⁶ The voice of one saying, Cry. And one said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. ⁷ The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the breath of Jehovah bloweth upon it; surely the people is grass. ⁸ The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand forever.

¹¹ And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed. ¹² The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

³¹ and those that use the world, as not using it to the full: for the fashion of this world passeth away.

¹³ Let us therefore go forth unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. ¹⁴ For we have not here an abiding city, but we seek after [the city] which is to come.

¹³ Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: ¹⁴ whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. ¹⁵ For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. ¹⁶ But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil.

²⁴ For,
All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory thereof as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower falleth:

⁷ But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer:

⁸ But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. ⁹ The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

¹⁷ And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
