¹ Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, ² Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me,
Even by reason of my haste that is in me. ³ I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame;
And the spirit of my understanding answereth me. ⁴ Knowest thou [not] this of old time,
Since man was placed upon earth, ⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short,
And the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his height mount up to the heavens,
And his head reach unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung:
They that have seen him shall say, Where is he? ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found:
Yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him shall see him no more;
Neither shall his place any more behold him. ¹⁰ His children shall seek the favor of the poor,
And his hands shall give back his wealth. ¹¹ His bones are full of his youth,
But it shall lie down with him in the dust.
¹² Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth,
Though he hide it under his tongue, ¹³ Though he spare it, and will not let it go,
But keep it still within his mouth; ¹⁴ Yet his food in his bowels is turned,
It is the gall of asps within him. ¹⁵ He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again;
God will cast them out of his belly. ¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps:
The viper's tongue shall slay him. ¹⁷ He shall not look upon the rivers,
The flowing streams of honey and butter. ¹⁸ That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down;
According to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice. ¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor;
He hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up.
²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him,
He shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth. ²¹ There was nothing left that he devoured not;
Therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits:
The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. ²³ When he is about to fill his belly,
[God] will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him,
And will rain it upon him while he is eating. ²⁴ He shall flee from the iron weapon,
And the bow of brass shall strike him through. ²⁵ He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body;
Yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall:
Terrors are upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is laid up for his treasures:
A fire not blown [by man] shall devour him;
It shall consume that which is left in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity,
And the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart;
[His goods] shall flow away in the day of his wrath. ²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God,
And the heritage appointed unto him by God.

¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they made an appointment together to come to bemoan him and to comfort him.

¹ Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as Jehovah commanded them: and Jehovah accepted Job.

² If one assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved?
But who can withhold himself from speaking?

¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me?
For then would I hold my peace and give up the ghost.

³ I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame;
And the spirit of my understanding answereth me.

¹³ Beware lest ye say, We have found wisdom;
God may vanquish him, not man: ¹⁴ For he hath not directed his words against me;
Neither will I answer him with your speeches.
¹⁵ They are amazed, they answer no more:
They have not a word to say. ¹⁶ And shall I wait, because they speak not,
Because they stand still, and answer no more? ¹⁷ I also will answer my part,
I also will show mine opinion. ¹⁸ For I am full of words;
The spirit within me constraineth me. ¹⁹ Behold, my breast is as wine which hath no vent;
Like new wine-skins it is ready to burst. ²⁰ I will speak, that I may be refreshed;
I will open my lips and answer.

²² As for me, I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes:
Nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications,
When I cried unto thee.

² I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good;
And my sorrow was stirred. ³ My heart was hot within me;
While I was musing the fire burned:
[Then] spake I with my tongue:

¹¹ I said in my haste,
All men are liars.

²⁹ He that is slow to anger is of great understanding;
But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

²⁰ Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words?
There is more hope of a fool than of him.

⁹ Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

⁹ And if I say, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with forbearing, and I cannot [contain].

²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

¹⁹ Ye know [this], my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

³ These ten times have ye reproached me:
Ye are not ashamed that ye deal hardly with me.

²⁹ Be ye afraid of the sword:
For wrath [bringeth] the punishments of the sword,
That ye may know there is a judgment.

² Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me,
Even by reason of my haste that is in me.

¹¹ I will teach you concerning the hand of God;
That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.

³ My words [shall utter] the uprightness of my heart;
And that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

³ My mouth shall speak wisdom;
And the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

² I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old, ³ Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children,
Telling to the generation to come the praises of Jehovah,
And his strength, and his wondrous works that he hath done. ⁵ For he established a testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which he commanded our fathers,
That they should make them known to their children;

²⁸ And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

¹ And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. ² And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every bird of the heavens; with all wherewith the ground teemeth, and all the fishes of the sea, into your hand are they delivered. ³ Every moving thing that liveth shall be food for you; as the green herb have I given you all.

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age,
And apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing,
Because our days upon earth are a shadow);

¹⁰ With us are both the grayheaded and the very aged men,
Much elder than thy father.

⁷ I said, Days should speak,
And multitude of years should teach wisdom.

¹⁶ The heavens are the heavens of Jehovah;
But the earth hath he given to the children of men.

⁹ The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil;
My desire shall be satisfied upon them;
I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them. ¹⁰ Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them:
They sank as lead in the mighty waters.

²¹ And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house. ²² Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.
²³ And the lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. ²⁴ And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hand our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, who hath slain many of us. ²⁵ And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison-house; and he made sport before them. And they set him between the pillars: ²⁶ and Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house resteth, that I may lean upon them. ²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.
²⁸ And Samson called unto Jehovah, and said, O Lord Jehovah, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. ²⁹ And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left. ³⁰ And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than they that he slew in his life.

¹¹ And Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king. ¹² Haman said moreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and to-morrow also am I invited by her together with the king.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root:
But suddenly I cursed his habitation.

¹² Whilst it is yet in its greenness, [and] not cut down,
It withereth before any [other] herb. ¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God;
And the hope of the godless man shall perish:

¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way;
And out of the earth shall others spring.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue,
Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness;
The flame shall dry up his branches,
And by the breath of [God's] mouth shall he go away. ³¹ Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself;
For vanity shall be his recompense. ³² It shall be accomplished before his time,
And his branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine,
And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree. ³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be barren,
And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out,
And the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent,
And his lamp above him shall be put out.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain,
When God taketh away his soul?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God,
And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty: ¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword;
And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death,
And his widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust,
And prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on,
And the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as the moth,
And as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered [to his fathers];
He openeth his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters;
A tempest stealeth him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth;
And it sweepeth him out of his place. ²² For [God] shall hurl at him, and not spare:
He would fain flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him,
And shall hiss him out of his place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power,
And spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not:
Yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely thou settest them in slippery places:
Thou castest them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment!
They are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh,
So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image.

²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.

²⁰ And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it; ²¹ yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth.

²² And the people shouted, [saying], The voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

⁴ But let each man prove his own work, and then shall he have his glorying in regard of himself alone, and not of his neighbor.

¹⁶ But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil.

⁴ And they said, Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven, and let us make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

¹³ And thou saidst in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north; ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.

¹¹ The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth.

²² it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong; for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

² Though they dig into Sheol, thence shall my hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down.

³ The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? ⁴ Though thou mount on high as the eagle, and though thy nest be set among the stars, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.

²³ And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted unto heaven? thou shalt go down unto Hades: for if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in thee, it would have remained until this day.

¹⁰ therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam every man-child, him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel, and will utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam, as a man sweepeth away dung, till it be all gone.

³⁷ and the body of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel, so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.

²⁰ Betwixt morning and evening they are destroyed:
They perish for ever without any regarding it.

¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house,
Neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁸ If he be destroyed from his place,
Then it shall deny him, [saying], I have not seen thee.

¹⁰ But man dieth, and is laid low:
Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

¹⁰ Who perished at Endor,
Who became as dung for the earth.

² and they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, which they have loved, and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and which they have sought, and which they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried, they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness,
And chased out of the world.

¹⁰ And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly;
Yea, he soared upon the wings of the wind.

²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh,
So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image.

⁵ Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep:
In the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

⁷ And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her stronghold, and that distress her, shall be as a dream, a vision of the night. ⁸ And it shall be as when a hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

⁸ The eye of him that seeth me shall behold me no more;
Thine eyes shall be upon me, but I shall not be.

⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung:
They that have seen him shall say, Where is he?

³ (For my life is yet whole in me,
And the spirit of God is in my nostrils);

¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:
Yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and he shall not be.

³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not:
Yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. ¹⁶ For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone;
And the place thereof shall know it no more.

² For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,

³⁶ and Jehovah gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. And they despoiled the Egyptians.

¹ If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

³ If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be bloodguiltiness for him; he shall make restitution: if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

⁶ and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

⁴ His children are far from safety,
And they are crushed in the gate,
Neither is there any to deliver them:

⁸ And Zacchζus stood, and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have wrongfully exacted aught of any man, I restore fourfold.

²⁶ For thou writest bitter things against me,
And makest me to inherit the iniquities of my youth:

²⁰ My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh,
And I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.

²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust,
And the worm covereth them.

⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions:
According to thy lovingkindness remember thou me,
For thy goodness' sake, O Jehovah.

¹¹ And thou mourn at thy latter end,
When thy flesh and thy body are consumed, ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction,
And my heart despised reproof; ¹³ Neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers,
Nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked,
And he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction;
And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his evil-doing;
But the righteous hath a refuge in his death.

¹³ In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have cleansed thee and thou wast not cleansed, thou shalt not be cleansed from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my wrath toward thee to rest.

²⁷ And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, that are gone down to Sheol with their weapons of war, and have laid their swords under their heads, and their iniquities are upon their bones; for [they were] the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

²¹ He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.

²⁴ I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.}

²⁵ to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.

⁶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

¹⁶ How much less one that is abominable and corrupt,
A man that drinketh iniquity like water!

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression:
Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.

¹⁷ Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him;
And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him. ¹⁸ He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment,
And it came into his inward parts like water,
And like oil into his bones.

¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet,
And bread [eaten] in secret is pleasant. ¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there;
That her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

¹⁷ Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man;
But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth, and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁸ And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye have wept in the ears of Jehovah, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore Jehovah will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. ¹⁹ Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days, ²⁰ but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you; because that ye have rejected Jehovah who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

²⁹ And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell.

⁴³ And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire.

⁴⁵ And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life halt, rather than having thy two feet to be cast into hell.

⁴⁷ And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it out: it is good for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell; ⁴⁸ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire.

¹³ for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

²⁴ [They shall be] wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat
And bitter destruction;
And the teeth of beasts will I send upon them,
With the poison of crawling things of the dust.

² And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned unto her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. ¹¹ Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house; and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away
Through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me:
My moisture was changed [as] with the drought of summer. [Selah

¹ A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.

O Jehovah, rebuke me not in thy wrath;
Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² For thine arrows stick fast in me,
And thy hand presseth me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation;
Neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over my head:
As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt,
Because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly;
I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with burning;
And there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and sore bruised:
I have groaned by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

⁸ Make me to hear joy and gladness,
That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. ⁹ Hide thy face from my sins,
And blot out all mine iniquities.

³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way,
And be filled with their own devices.

²⁰ Be not among winebibbers,
Among gluttonous eaters of flesh: ²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty;
And drowsiness will clothe [a man] with rags.

²⁹ Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions?
Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause?
Who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine;
They that go to seek out mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red,
When it sparkleth in the cup,
When it goeth down smoothly: ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent,
And stingeth like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things,
And thy heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea,
Or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ They have stricken me, [shalt thou say], and I was not hurt;
They have beaten me, and I felt it not:
When shall I awake?
I will seek it yet again.

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

² If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith Jehovah of hosts, then will I send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre;
With their tongues they have used deceit:
The poison of asps is under their lips:

⁸ The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up,
And lose thy sweet words.

³ Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, ⁴ saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou [to it].

⁶ The burden of the beasts of the South.
Through the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the lioness and the lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people that shall not profit [them].

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

³ But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out by reason of the heat, and fastened on his hand. ⁴ And when the barbarians saw the [venomous] creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped from the sea, yet Justice hath not suffered to live. ⁵ Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm. ⁶ But they expected that he would have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but when they were long in expectation and beheld nothing amiss came to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

²³ surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised me see it:

¹³ He made him ride on the high places of the earth,
And he did eat the increase of the field;
And he made him to suck honey out of the rock,
And oil out of the flinty rock; ¹⁴ Butter of the herd, and milk of the flock,
With fat of lambs,
And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats,
With the finest of the wheat;
And of the blood of the grape thou drankest wine.

²⁹ and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

² Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if Jehovah should make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.

⁶ When my steps were washed with butter,
And the rock poured me out streams of oil!

⁸ They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house;
And thou wilt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. ⁹ For with thee is the fountain of life:
In thy light shall we see light.

¹⁶ He would feed them also with the finest of the wheat;
And with honey out of the rock would I satisfy thee.

¹⁵ Butter and honey shall he eat, when he knoweth to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

²² and it shall come to pass, that because of the abundance of milk which they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the midst of the land.

¹⁷ The poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst; I, Jehovah, will answer them, I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

⁶ For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited. ⁷ Blessed is the man that trusteth in Jehovah, and whose trust Jehovah is. ⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat cometh, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.

¹ And he showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb,

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short,
And the joy of the godless but for a moment?

¹⁰ His children shall seek the favor of the poor,
And his hands shall give back his wealth.

¹⁵ He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again;
God will cast them out of his belly.

²⁵ If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had gotten much;

²⁹ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me,
Or lifted up myself when evil found him

¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol,
And whole, as those that go down into the pit;

⁷ The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merry-hearted do sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. ⁹ They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. ¹⁰ The waste city is broken down; every house is shut up, that no man may come in. ¹¹ There is a crying in the streets because of the wine; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

¹⁵ What hath my beloved to do in my house, seeing she hath wrought lewdness [with] many, and the holy flesh is passed from thee? when thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest. ¹⁶ Jehovah called thy name, A green olive-tree, fair with goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.

¹³ Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice; that useth his neighbor's service without wages, and giveth him not his hire;

¹⁷ But thine eyes and thy heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath, like a monster, swallowed me up, he hath filled his maw with my delicacies; he hath cast me out.

⁴⁴ And I will execute judgment upon Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up; and the nations shall not flow any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.

¹⁶ All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee;
They hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up;
Certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

¹² The time is come, the day draweth near: let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: he hath no standing grain; the blade shall yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.
⁸ Israel is swallowed up: now are they among the nations as a vessel wherein none delighteth.

¹ Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, like the peoples; for thou hast played the harlot, [departing] from thy God; thou hast loved hire upon every grain-floor.

⁴ Hear this, O ye that would swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail,

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.

²⁴ Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel!

⁸ Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

³³ The fruit of thy ground, and all thy labors, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway;

³ Here I am: witness against me before Jehovah, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you. ⁴ And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou killed and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.

¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his:
Brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts,
And the devices wherewith ye would wrong me. ²⁸ For ye say, Where is the house of the prince?
And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt?

⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought,
And stripped the naked of their clothing.

² There are that remove the landmarks;
They violently take away flocks, and feed them. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless;
They take the widow's ox for a pledge. ⁴ They turn the needy out of the way:
The poor of the earth all hide themselves. ⁵ Behold, as wild asses in the desert
They go forth to their work, seeking diligently for food;
The wilderness [yieldeth] them bread for their children. ⁶ They cut their provender in the field;
And they glean the vintage of the wicked. ⁷ They lie all night naked without clothing,
And have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the showers of the mountains,
And embrace the rock for want of a shelter. ⁹ There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast,
And take a pledge of the poor; ¹⁰ [So that] they go about naked without clothing,
And being hungry they carry the sheaves. ¹¹ They make oil within the walls of these men;
They tread [their] winepresses, and suffer thirst. ¹² From out of the populous city men groan,
And the soul of the wounded crieth out:
Yet God regardeth not the folly.

¹³ If I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant,
When they contended with me; ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God riseth up?
And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him?
And did not one fashion us in the womb?
¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire,
Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone,
And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof ¹⁸ (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,
And her have I guided from my mother's womb); ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing,
Or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me,
And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,
Because I saw my help in the gate: ²² Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade,
And mine arm be broken from the bone.

³⁸ If my land crieth out against me,
And the furrows thereof weep together; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money,
Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

⁹ By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out;
They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.

¹⁸ To judge the fatherless and the oppressed,
That man who is of the earth may be terrible no more.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy,
Now will I arise, saith Jehovah;
I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

³¹ He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker;
But he that hath mercy on the needy honoreth him.

²² Rob not the poor, because he is poor;
Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: ²³ For Jehovah will plead their cause,
And despoil of life those that despoil them.

¹ Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and, behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

⁸ If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a province, marvel not at the matter: for one higher than the high regardeth; and there are higher than they.

⁷ For the vineyard of Jehovah of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for justice, but, behold, oppression; for righteousness, but, behold, a cry.
⁸ Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

³⁴ To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,

²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery; yea, they have vexed the poor and needy, and have oppressed the sojourner wrongfully.

¹ Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say unto their lords, Bring, and let us drink. ² The Lord Jehovah hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that they shall take you away with hooks, and your residue with fish-hooks. ³ And ye shall go out at the breaches, every one straight before her; and ye shall cast [yourselves] into Harmon, saith Jehovah.

² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

⁹ The women of my people ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their young children ye take away my glory for ever.

⁶ But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?

¹³ For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

¹³ There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun, [namely], riches kept by the owner thereof to his hurt: ¹⁴ and those riches perish by evil adventure; and if he hath begotten a son, there is nothing in his hand.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue,
Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.

¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son's son among his people,
Nor any remaining where he sojourned.

¹¹ As the partridge that sitteth on [eggs] which she hath not laid, so is he that getteth riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days they shall leave him, and at his end he shall be a fool.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

² And Jehovah sent against him bands of the Chaldeans, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by his servants the prophets.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling;
And there the weary are at rest.

¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly,
And casteth me into the hands of the wicked.

⁷ The steps of his strength shall be straitened,
And his own counsel shall cast him down.

⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days [as] handbreadths;
And my life-time is as nothing before thee:
Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. [Selah

¹⁸ And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. ²⁰ Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor wherein I had labored under the sun.

⁶ I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

⁷ How much soever she glorified herself, and waxed wanton, so much give her of torment and mourning: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall in no wise see mourning.

²⁴ Then Jehovah rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Jehovah out of heaven;

²³ And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and Jehovah sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down unto the earth; and Jehovah rained hail upon the land of Egypt.

³³ While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the people, and Jehovah smote the people with a very great plague.

⁶ Upon the wicked he will rain snares;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁰ They were not estranged from that which they desired,
Their food was yet in their mouths, ³¹ When the anger of God went up against them,
And slew of the fattest of them,
And smote down the young men of Israel.

⁴ My heart fluttereth, horror hath affrighted me; the twilight that I desired hath been turned into trembling unto me.

¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

³⁵ He teacheth my hands to war,
So that mine arms do bend a bow of brass.

³⁰ But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.

²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver;
As a bird hasteth to the snare,
And knoweth not that it is for his life.

¹⁸ And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.

⁴³ Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith Jehovah. ⁴⁴ He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon him, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith Jehovah.

¹⁹ As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar: and he said, Smite the capitals, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape. ² Though they dig into Sheol, thence shall my hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down. ³ And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and it shall bite them.

⁴¹ If I whet my glittering sword,
And my hand take hold on judgment;
I will render vengeance to mine adversaries,
And will recompense them that hate me.

¹⁴ Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me,
The poison whereof my spirit drinketh up:
The terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

¹³ His archers compass me round about;
He cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare;
He poureth out my gall upon the ground.

¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side,
And shall chase him at his heels.

²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters;
A tempest stealeth him away in the night.

¹² If a man turn not, he will whet his sword;
He hath bent his bow, and made it ready;

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment!
They are utterly consumed with terrors.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:
While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

³ And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashhur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, Jehovah hath not called thy name Pashhur, but Magor-missabib. ⁴ For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword.

¹¹ Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest unto God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness,
And chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son's son among his people,
Nor any remaining where he sojourned.

⁹ Thou wilt make them as a fiery furnace in the time of thine anger:
Jehovah will swallow them up in his wrath,
And the fire shall devour them.

⁹ Let his children be fatherless,
And his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be vagabonds, and beg;
And let them seek [their bread] out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the extortioner catch all that he hath;
And let strangers make spoil of his labor. ¹² Let there be none to extend kindness unto him;
Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off;
In the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with Jehovah;
And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before Jehovah continually,
That he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;

⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty,
With coals of juniper.

²² and they shall look unto the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and into thick darkness [they shall be] driven away.

²⁰ Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people; the seed of evil-doers shall not be named for ever.
²¹ Prepare ye slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers, that they rise not up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities. ²² And I will rise up against them, saith Jehovah of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and son and son's son, saith Jehovah.

³³ For a Topheth is prepared of old; yea, for the king it is made ready; he hath made it deep and large; the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of Jehovah, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

¹² whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

¹² but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast forth into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.}

¹³ wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.

²⁸ Assemble unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them.

¹⁸ O earth, cover not thou my blood,
And let my cry have no [resting]-place.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God,
Or spread forth our hands to a strange god; ²¹ Will not God search this out?
For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²¹ For, behold, Jehovah cometh forth out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

²³ because they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knoweth, and am witness, saith Jehovah.

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner [from his right], and fear not me, saith Jehovah of hosts.

² But there is nothing covered up, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. ³ Wherefore whatsoever ye have said in the darkness shall be heard in the light; and what ye have spoken in the ear in the inner chambers shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.

³¹ Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to save thee.

¹⁷ Behold, the days come, that all that is in thy house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith Jehovah.

⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up,
And taketh it even out of the thorns;
And the snare gapeth for their substance.

¹⁸ That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down;
According to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice. ¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor;
He hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up.
²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him,
He shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth. ²¹ There was nothing left that he devoured not;
Therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits:
The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him.

³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity?
That they are led forth to the day of wrath?

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword;
And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death,
And his widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust,
And prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on,
And the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as the moth,
And as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered [to his fathers];
He openeth his eyes, and he is not.

⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath;
But righteousness delivereth from death.

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of Jehovah's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he will make an end, yea, a terrible end, of all them that dwell in the land.

²⁶ For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted; and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days.

¹⁷ for in one hour so great riches is made desolate. And every shipmaster, and every one that saileth any whither, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood afar off,

²⁰ Jehovah will not pardon him, but then the anger of Jehovah and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and Jehovah will blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ And Jehovah will set him apart unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law.
²² And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses wherewith Jehovah hath made it sick; ²³ [and that] the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, [and] a burning, [that] it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Jehovah overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath: ²⁴ even all the nations shall say, Wherefore hath Jehovah done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger? ²⁵ Then men shall say, Because they forsook the covenant of Jehovah, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, ²⁶ and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods that they knew not, and that he had not given unto them: ²⁷ therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book; ²⁸ and Jehovah rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as at this day.

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous,
And this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God,
And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty:

² For what is the portion from God above,
And the heritage from the Almighty on high? ³ Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,
And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

⁵ Jehovah trieth the righteous;
But the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. ⁶ Upon the wicked he will rain snares;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁸ Out of the mouth of the Most High cometh there not evil and good?

⁵¹ and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.}
