¹ Then Job answered and said, ² Hear diligently my speech;
And let this be your consolations. ³ Suffer me, and I also will speak;
And after that I have spoken, mock on. ⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man?
And why should I not be impatient? ⁵ Mark me, and be astonished,
And lay your hand upon your mouth. ⁶ Even when I remember I am troubled,
And horror taketh hold on my flesh. ⁷ Wherefore do the wicked live,
Become old, yea, wax mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established with them in their sight,
And their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear,
Neither is the rod of God upon them. ¹⁰ Their bull gendereth, and faileth not;
Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock,
And their children dance. ¹² They sing to the timbrel and harp,
And rejoice at the sound of the pipe. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity,
And in a moment they go down to Sheol. ¹⁴ And they say unto God, Depart from us;
For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? ¹⁶ Lo, their prosperity is not in their hand:
The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
¹⁷ How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out?
That their calamity cometh upon them?
That [God] distributeth sorrows in his anger? ¹⁸ That they are as stubble before the wind,
And as chaff that the storm carrieth away? ¹⁹ [Ye say], God layeth up his iniquity for his children.
Let him recompense it unto himself, that he may know it: ²⁰ Let his own eyes see his destruction,
And let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty. ²¹ For what careth he for his house after him,
When the number of his months is cut off? ²² Shall any teach God knowledge,
Seeing he judgeth those that are high? ²³ One dieth in his full strength,
Being wholly at ease and quiet: ²⁴ His pails are full of milk,
And the marrow of his bones is moistened. ²⁵ And another dieth in bitterness of soul,
And never tasteth of good. ²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust,
And the worm covereth them.
²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts,
And the devices wherewith ye would wrong me. ²⁸ For ye say, Where is the house of the prince?
And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt? ²⁹ Have ye not asked wayfaring men?
And do ye not know their evidences, ³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity?
That they are led forth to the day of wrath? ³¹ Who shall declare his way to his face?
And who shall repay him what he hath done? ³² Yet shall he be borne to the grave,
And men shall keep watch over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him,
And all men shall draw after him,
As there were innumerable before him. ³⁴ How then comfort ye me in vain,
Seeing in your answers there remaineth [only] falsehood?

⁷ And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty,
And I desire to reason with God. ⁴ But ye are forgers of lies;
Ye are all physicians of no value.

¹¹ Are the consolations of God too small for thee,
Even the word that is gentle toward thee?

² I have heard many such things:
Miserable comforters are ye all.

² How long will ye hunt for words?
Consider, and afterwards we will speak.

¹ Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech,
And hearken to all my words.

³¹ Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me:
Hold thy peace, and I will speak. ³² If thou hast anything to say, answer me:
Speak, for I desire to justify thee. ³³ If not, hearken thou unto me:
Hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.

² Hear my words, ye wise men;
And give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

² Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away [from them].

⁴ I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbor,
I who called upon God, and he answered:
The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock. ⁵ In the thought of him that is at ease there is contempt for misfortune;
It is ready for them whose foot slippeth.

⁹ Is it good that he should search you out?
Or as one deceiveth a man, will ye deceive him?

¹³ Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak;
And let come on me what will.

¹⁰ They have gaped upon me with their mouth;
They have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully:
They gather themselves together against me.

²⁰ My friends scoff at me:
[But] mine eye poureth out tears unto God,

² Surely there are mockers with me,
And mine eye dwelleth upon their provocation.

⁹ And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

¹⁶ Count not thy handmaid for a wicked woman; for out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation have I spoken hitherto.

²⁶ And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king. ²⁷ And he said, If Jehovah do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the winepress?

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait?
And what is mine end, that I should be patient?

¹¹ Therefore I will not refrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I a sea, or a sea-monster,
That thou settest a watch over me? ¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me,
My couch shall ease my complaint; ¹⁴ Then thou scarest me with dreams,
And terrifiest me through visions: ¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling,
And death rather than [these] my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe [my life]; I would not live alway:
Let me alone; for my days are vanity. ¹⁷ What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him,
And that thou shouldest set thy mind upon him, ¹⁸ And that thou shouldest visit him every morning,
And try him every moment? ¹⁹ How long wilt thou not look away from me,
Nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I unto thee, O thou watcher of men?
Why hast thou set me as a mark for thee,
So that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity?
For now shall I lie down in the dust;
And thou wilt seek me diligently, but I shall not be.

¹ My soul is weary of my life;
I will give free course to my complaint;
I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. ² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me;
Show me wherefore thou contendest with me.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
[Why art thou so] far from helping me, [and from] the words of my groaning? ² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answerest not;
And in the night season, and am not silent. ³ But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

¹¹ Why art thou cast down, O my soul?
And why art thou disquieted within me?
Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him,
[Who is] the help of my countenance, and my God.

³ I remember God, and am disquieted:
I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. [Selah ⁴ Thou holdest mine eyes watching:
I am so troubled that I cannot speak. ⁵ I have considered the days of old,
The years of ancient times. ⁶ I call to remembrance my song in the night:
I commune with mine own heart;
And my spirit maketh diligent search. ⁷ Will the Lord cast off for ever?
And will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Is his lovingkindness clean gone for ever?
Doth his promise fail for evermore? ⁹ Hath God forgotten to be gracious?
Hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? [Selah

¹ A Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed, and poureth out his complaint before Jehovah.

Hear my prayer, O Jehovah,
And let my cry come unto thee.

² I pour out my complaint before him;
I show before him my trouble. ³ When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,
Thou knewest my path.
In the way wherein I walk
Have they hidden a snare for me.

³⁸ Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: abide ye here, and watch with me.

¹⁹ And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be priest unto the house of one man, or to be priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

¹² And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his robe, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

⁸ Upright men shall be astonished at this,
And the innocent shall stir up himself against the godless.

²⁰ My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh,
And I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. ²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends;
For the hand of God hath touched me.

⁹ The princes refrained from talking,
And laid their hand on their mouth;

⁴ Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer thee?
I lay my hand upon my mouth.

⁹ I was dumb, I opened not my mouth;
Because thou didst it.

³² If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself,
Or if thou hast thought evil,
Lay thy hand upon thy mouth.

¹³ Therefore he that is prudent shall keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁶ The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might; they shall lay their hand upon their mouth; their ears shall be deaf.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!

³ I remember God, and am disquieted:
I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. [Selah

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:
While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembleth for fear of thee;
And I am afraid of thy judgments.

¹⁹ Remember mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. ²⁰ My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is bowed down within me.

¹⁶ I heard, and my body trembled,
My lips quivered at the voice;
Rottenness entereth into my bones, and I tremble in my place;
Because I must wait quietly for the day of trouble,
For the coming up of the people that invadeth us.

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper,
And they that provoke God are secure;
Into whose hand God bringeth [abundantly].

¹⁰ They are inclosed in their own fat:
With their mouth they speak proudly.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power,
And spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant,
When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pangs in their death;
But their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as [other] men;
Neither are they plagued like [other] men. ⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck;
Violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness:
They have more than heart could wish. ⁸ They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression:
They speak loftily. ⁹ They have set their mouth in the heavens,
And their tongue walketh through the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore his people return hither:
And waters of a full [cup] are drained by them. ¹¹ And they say, How doth God know?
And is there knowledge in the Most High? ¹² Behold, these are the wicked;
And, being alway at ease, they increase in riches.

¹ Righteous art thou, O Jehovah, when I contend with thee; yet would I reason the cause with thee: wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they at ease that deal very treacherously? ² Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root; they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their heart. ³ But thou, O Jehovah, knowest me; thou seest me, and triest my heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men.

¹³ Thou that art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and that canst not look on perverseness, wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy peace when the wicked swalloweth up the man that is more righteous than he;

¹⁵ He taketh up all of them with the angle, he catcheth them in his net, and gathereth them in his drag: therefore he rejoiceth and is glad. ¹⁶ Therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; because by them his portion is fat, and his food plenteous.

² And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. ³ And [I saw] one of his heads as though it had been smitten unto death; and his death-stroke was healed: and the whole earth wondered after the beast; ⁴ and they worshipped the dragon, because he gave his authority unto the beast; and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? and who is able to war with him? ⁵ and there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and there was given to him authority to continue forty and two months. ⁶ And he opened his mouth for blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, [even] them that dwell in the heaven. ⁷ And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and there was given to him authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation.

² with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and they that dwell in the earth were made drunken with the wine of her fornication. ³ And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness: and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. ⁴ And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations, even the unclean things of her fornication,

³ I have seen the foolish taking root:
But suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety,
And they are crushed in the gate,
Neither is there any to deliver them:

¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son's son among his people,
Nor any remaining where he sojourned.

¹⁰ His children shall seek the favor of the poor,
And his hands shall give back his wealth.

²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart;
[His goods] shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

¹⁴ From men by thy hand, O Jehovah,
From men of the world, whose portion is in [this] life,
And whose belly thou fillest with thy treasure:
They are satisfied with children,
And leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

⁶ Children's children are the crown of old men;
And the glory of children are their fathers.

³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me,
And let not his terror make me afraid:

²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side,
And shall chase him at his heels.

⁵ They are not in trouble as [other] men;
Neither are they plagued like [other] men.

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment!
They are utterly consumed with terrors.

¹⁹ I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near, saith Jehovah; and I will heal him. ²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

²⁶ There shall none cast her young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.

¹³ and he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; he will also bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground, thy grain and thy new wine and thine oil, the increase of thy cattle and the young of thy flock, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee. ¹⁴ Thou shalt be blessed above all peoples: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

¹¹ And Jehovah will make thee plenteous for good, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which Jehovah sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

¹³ [When] our garners are full, affording all manner of store,
[And] our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields; ¹⁴ [When] our oxen are well laden;
[When there is] no breaking in, and no going forth,
And no outcry in our streets:

¹ For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; whether it be love or hatred, man knoweth it not; all is before them.
² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; [and] he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

¹⁶ And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: ¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.}

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:

⁴¹ Yet setteth he the needy on high from affliction,
And maketh [him] families like a flock.

³ Lo, children are a heritage of Jehovah;
[And] the fruit of the womb is [his] reward. ⁴ As arrows in the hand of a mighty man,
So are the children of youth. ⁵ Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
They shall not be put to shame,
When they speak with their enemies in the gate.

²¹ And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.

²⁷ Wherefore didst thou flee secretly, and steal away from me, and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth and with songs, with tabret and with harp;

¹² And the harp and the lute, the tabret and the pipe, and wine, are [in] their feasts; but they regard not the work of Jehovah, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

¹³ and behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine: let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we shall die.

⁴ that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ⁵ that sing idle songs to the sound of the viol; that invent for themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶ that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief oils; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

¹¹ If they hearken and serve [him],
They shall spend their days in prosperity,
And their years in pleasures.

⁴ For there are no pangs in their death;
But their strength is firm.

³⁸ For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, ³⁹ and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

²⁸ Likewise even as it came to pass in the days of Lot; they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; ²⁹ but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all:

¹⁷ Who said unto God, Depart from us;
And, What can the Almighty do for us?

⁴ The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, [saith],
He will not require [it].
All his thoughts are,
There is no God.

¹¹ He saith in his heart, God hath forgotten;
He hideth his face; he will never see it.

⁷ The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge;
[But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity?
And scoffers delight them in scoffing,
And fools hate knowledge?

²⁹ For that they hated knowledge,
And did not choose the fear of Jehovah:

¹⁵ He taketh up all of them with the angle, he catcheth them in his net, and gathereth them in his drag: therefore he rejoiceth and is glad.

²⁸ And when he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God? I beseech thee, torment me not.

³⁷ And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes round about asked him to depart from them; for they were holden with great fear: and he entered into a boat, and returned.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

⁴⁵ But because I say the truth, ye believe me not. ⁴⁶ Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me? ⁴⁷ He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.}

²³ He that hateth me hateth my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which none other did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

²⁸ And even as they refused to have God in [their] knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

⁷ because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be:

¹⁰ and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie: ¹² that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

³ For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; ⁴ and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.

² And Pharaoh said, Who is Jehovah, that I should hearken unto his voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, and moreover I will not let Israel go.

⁹ For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing
That he should delight himself with God.

³ That thou sayest, What advantage will it be unto thee?
[And], What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?

⁴ Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail;
Our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

⁹ Lest I be full, and deny [thee], and say, Who is Jehovah?
Or lest I be poor, and steal,
And use profanely the name of my God.

¹¹ get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

¹⁹ I have not spoken in secret, in a place of the land of darkness; I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I, Jehovah, speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.

⁶ According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me.

¹³ Ye say also, Behold, what a weariness is it! and ye have snuffed at it, saith Jehovah of hosts; and ye have brought that which was taken by violence, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye bring the offering: should I accept this at your hand? saith Jehovah. ¹⁴ But cursed be the deceiver, who hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a blemished thing; for I am a great King, saith Jehovah of hosts, and my name is terrible among the Gentiles.

⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

²⁴ Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full.

⁶ O my soul, come not thou into their council;
Unto their assembly, my glory, be not thou united;
For in their anger they slew a man,
And in their self-will they hocked an ox.

²¹ and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

⁹ Who knoweth not in all these,
That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this, ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing,
And the breath of all mankind?

¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things:
But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor standeth in the way of sinners,
Nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers:

⁶ They that trust in their wealth,
And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ None [of them] can by any means redeem his brother,
Nor give to God a ransom for him;

⁵ God will likewise destroy thee for ever;
He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent,
And root thee out of the land of the living. [Selah ⁶ The righteous also shall see [it], and fear,
And shall laugh at him, [saying], ⁷ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength,
But trusted in the abundance of his riches,
And strengthened himself in his wickedness.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice thee,
Consent thou not.

⁸ Remove thy way far from her,
And come not nigh the door of her house;

⁸ There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.

² And he called him, and said unto him, What is this that I hear of thee? render the account of thy stewardship; for thou canst be no longer steward.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out,
And the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent,
And his lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness,
And chased out of the world.

¹⁰ Many sorrows shall be to the wicked;
But he that trusteth in Jehovah, lovingkindness shall compass him about.

⁷ For we are consumed in thine anger,
And in thy wrath are we troubled. ⁸ Thou hast set our iniquities before thee,
Our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in thy wrath:
We bring our years to an end as a sigh.

⁹ The light of the righteous rejoiceth;
But the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ Whoso curseth his father or his mother,
His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

²⁰ For there shall be no reward to the evil man;
The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.

⁴⁶ the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.

⁸ but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, [shall be] wrath and indignation, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;

⁷ And in the greatness of thine excellency thou overthrowest them that rise up against thee:
Thou sendest forth thy wrath, it consumeth them as stubble.

²⁵ Wilt thou harass a driven leaf?
And wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

⁴ The wicked are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

⁵ Let them be as chaff before the wind,
And the angel of Jehovah driving [them] on.

¹³ O my God, make them like the whirling dust;
As stubble before the wind.

²⁴ Therefore as the tongue of fire devoureth the stubble, and as the dry grass sinketh down in the flame, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have rejected the law of Jehovah of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

¹³ The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but he shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

⁵ But the multitude of thy foes shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be in an instant suddenly.

²⁴ Yea, they have not been planted; yea, they have not been sown; yea, their stock hath not taken root in the earth: moreover he bloweth upon them, and they wither, and the whirlwind taketh them away as stubble.

¹⁵ Behold, I have made thee [to be] a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth; thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. ¹⁶ Thou shalt winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them; and thou shalt rejoice in Jehovah, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

²⁴ Therefore will I scatter them, as the stubble that passeth away, by the wind of the wilderness.

³ Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the dew that passeth early away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

¹⁰ For entangled like thorns, and drunken as with their drink, they are consumed utterly as dry stubble.

¹² whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

⁷ If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee shall be its desire; but do thou rule over it.

⁵ thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me,

³⁴ Is not this laid up in store with me,
Sealed up among my treasures?

⁴¹ If I whet my glittering sword,
And my hand take hold on judgment;
I will render vengeance to mine adversaries,
And will recompense them that hate me.

³⁹ And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me: Jehovah reward the evil-doer according to his wickedness.

²⁴ And lay thou [thy] treasure in the dust,
And [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the brooks;

⁵ He will requite the evil unto mine enemies:
Destroy thou them in thy truth.

⁹ Let his children be fatherless,
And his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be vagabonds, and beg;
And let them seek [their bread] out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the extortioner catch all that he hath;
And let strangers make spoil of his labor. ¹² Let there be none to extend kindness unto him;
Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off;
In the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with Jehovah;
And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before Jehovah continually,
That he may cut off the memory of them from the earth; ¹⁶ Because he remembered not to show kindness,
But persecuted the poor and needy man,
And the broken in heart, to slay [them]. ¹⁷ Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him;
And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him. ¹⁸ He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment,
And it came into his inward parts like water,
And like oil into his bones. ¹⁹ Let it be unto him as the raiment wherewith he covereth himself,
And for the girdle wherewith he is girded continually. ²⁰ This is the reward of mine adversaries from Jehovah,
And of them that speak evil against my soul. ²¹ But deal thou with me, O Jehovah the Lord, for thy name's sake:
Because thy lovingkindness is good, deliver thou me; ²² For I am poor and needy,
And my heart is wounded within me. ²³ I am gone like the shadow when it declineth:
I am tossed up and down as the locust. ²⁴ My knees are weak through fasting;
And my flesh faileth of fatness. ²⁵ I am become also a reproach unto them:
When they see me, they shake their head. ²⁶ Help me, O Jehovah my God;
Oh save me according to thy lovingkindness: ²⁷ That they may know that this is thy hand;
[That] thou, Jehovah, hast done it. ²⁸ Let them curse, but bless thou:
When they arise, they shall be put to shame,
But thy servant shall rejoice. ²⁹ Let mine adversaries be clothed with dishonor,
And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe. ³⁰ I will give great thanks unto Jehovah with my mouth;
Yea, I will praise him among the multitude. ³¹ For he will stand at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from them that judge his soul.

²¹ Prepare ye slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers, that they rise not up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.

⁴ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. ⁵ But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. ⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

²⁹ In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.

² What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?

¹⁴ Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins, which he hath done, and feareth, and doeth not such like;

¹⁹ Yet say ye, Wherefore doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. ²⁰ The soul that sinneth, it shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

¹⁸ Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰ but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

²⁷ For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then shall he render unto every man according to his deeds.

³¹ Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets. ³² Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. ³³ Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell?
³⁴ Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar.

⁵ but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

²¹ Him who knew no sin he made [to be] sin on our behalf; that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

¹⁴ Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord will render to him according to his works:

⁶ Render unto her even as she rendered, and double [unto her] the double according to her works: in the cup which she mingled, mingle unto her double.

¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered [to his fathers];
He openeth his eyes, and he is not.

³ Thou hast showed thy people hard things:
Thou hast made us to drink the wine of staggering.

⁸ For in the hand of Jehovah there is a cup, and the wine foameth;
It is full of mixture, and he poureth out of the same:
Surely the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall drain them, and drink them.

¹⁷ Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, that hast drunk at the hand of Jehovah the cup of his wrath; thou hast drunken the bowl of the cup of staggering, and drained it.

¹⁵ For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, unto me: Take this cup of the wine of wrath at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. ¹⁶ And they shall drink, and reel to and fro, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.

⁷ Babylon hath been a golden cup in Jehovah's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunk of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.

²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

¹⁰ he also shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is prepared unmixed in the cup of his anger; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

¹⁵ And out of his mouth proceedeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined,
The number of his months is with thee,
And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

²¹ His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not;
And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

²³ But thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction:
Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days;
But I will trust in thee.

²⁴ I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days:
Thy years are throughout all generations.

¹⁸ And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

²⁷ And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house; ²⁸ for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

¹⁸ Behold, he putteth no trust in his servants;
And his angels he chargeth with folly:

¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones;
Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight:

¹⁷ Shall even one that hateth justice govern?
And wilt thou condemn him that is righteous [and] mighty?— ¹⁸ [Him] that saith to a king, [Thou art] vile,
[Or] to nobles, [Ye are] wicked; ¹⁹ That respecteth not the persons of princes,
Nor regardeth the rich more than the poor;
For they all are the work of his hands.

¹¹ Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth,
And maketh us wiser than the birds of the heavens?

²² Behold, God doeth loftily in his power:
Who is a teacher like unto him?

² Shall he that cavilleth contend with the Almighty?
He that argueth with God, let him answer it.

God standeth in the congregation of God;
He judgeth among the gods.

⁵ Who is like unto Jehovah our God,
That hath his seat on high, ⁶ That humbleth himself to behold
[The things that are] in heaven and in the earth?

⁸ If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a province, marvel not at the matter: for one higher than the high regardeth; and there are higher than they.

¹³ Who hath directed the Spirit of Jehovah, or being his counsellor hath taught him? ¹⁴ With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding?

²² [It is] he that sitteth above the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in; ²³ that bringeth princes to nothing; that maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.

⁹ Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! a potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

¹⁶ For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

³ Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more, things that pertain to this life?

⁴ For if God spared not angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

⁶ And angels that kept not their own principality, but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

¹ And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. ² And he laid hold on the dragon, the old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, ³ and cast him into the abyss, and shut [it], and sealed [it] over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years should be finished: after this he must be loosed for a little time.

¹² And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works. ¹³ And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. ¹⁴ And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, [even] the lake of fire. ¹⁵ And if any was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits:
The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. ²³ When he is about to fill his belly,
[God] will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him,
And will rain it upon him while he is eating.

¹⁷ For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away;
His glory shall not descend after him.

⁴ For there are no pangs in their death;
But their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as [other] men;
Neither are they plagued like [other] men.

²⁷ Because he hath covered his face with his fatness,
And gathered fat upon his loins;

⁸ It will be health to thy navel,
And marrow to thy bones.

⁸ Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

¹² And she said, As Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery,
And life unto the bitter in soul;

¹¹ Therefore I will not refrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁸ He will not suffer me to take my breath,
But filleth me with bitterness.

¹ My soul is weary of my life;
I will give free course to my complaint;
I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

²³ When he is about to fill his belly,
[God] will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him,
And will rain it upon him while he is eating.

¹⁰ The heart knoweth its own bitterness;
And a stranger doth not inter-meddle with its joy.

² a man to whom God giveth riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacketh nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but an alien eateth it; this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

¹⁵ What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it:
I shall go softly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul. ¹⁶ O Lord, by these things men live;
And wholly therein is the life of my spirit:
Wherefore recover thou me, and make me to live. ¹⁷ Behold, [it was] for [my] peace [that] I had great bitterness:
But thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption;
For thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

¹⁶ Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I will break the staff of bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with fearfulness; and they shall drink water by measure, and in dismay: ¹⁷ that they may want bread and water, and be dismayed one with another, and pine away in their iniquity.

¹⁸ Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with fearfulness;

¹⁸ There the prisoners are at ease together;
They hear not the voice of the taskmaster. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there:
And the servant is free from his master.

¹⁴ If I have said to corruption, Thou art my father;
To the worm, [Thou art] my mother, and my sister;

²⁶ And after my skin, [even] this [body], is destroyed,
Then without my flesh shall I see God;

¹¹ His bones are full of his youth,
But it shall lie down with him in the dust.

²⁰ The womb shall forget him;
The worm shall feed sweetly on him;
He shall be no more remembered;
And unrighteousness shall be broken as a tree.

¹⁴ They are appointed as a flock for Sheol;
Death shall be their shepherd;
And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;
And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume,
That there be no habitation for it.

² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; [and] he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

¹¹ Thy pomp is brought down to Sheol, [and] the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and worms cover thee.

⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity,
And sow trouble, reap the same. ⁹ By the breath of God they perish,
And by the blast of his anger are they consumed. ¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion,
And the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perisheth for lack of prey,
And the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root:
But suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety,
And they are crushed in the gate,
Neither is there any to deliver them: ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up,
And taketh it even out of the thorns;
And the snare gapeth for their substance.

³ Doth God pervert justice?
Or doth the Almighty pervert righteousness? ⁴ If thy children have sinned against him,
And he hath delivered them into the hand of their transgression; ⁵ If thou wouldest seek diligently unto God,
And make thy supplication to the Almighty; ⁶ If thou wert pure and upright:
Surely now he would awake for thee,
And make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days,
Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor. ²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. ²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness,
And he is waited for of the sword. ²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying], Where is it?
He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Distress and anguish make him afraid;
They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ Because he hath stretched out his hand against God,
And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty; ²⁶ He runneth upon him with a [stiff] neck,
With the thick bosses of his bucklers; ²⁷ Because he hath covered his face with his fatness,
And gathered fat upon his loins; ²⁸ And he hath dwelt in desolate cities,
In houses which no man inhabited,
Which were ready to become heaps; ²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue,
Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness;
The flame shall dry up his branches,
And by the breath of [God's] mouth shall he go away. ³¹ Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself;
For vanity shall be his recompense. ³² It shall be accomplished before his time,
And his branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine,
And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree. ³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be barren,
And fire shall consume the tents of bribery. ³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity,
And their heart prepareth deceit.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short,
And the joy of the godless but for a moment?

²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God,
And the heritage appointed unto him by God.

³ Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

⁷ And it was so, that, after Jehovah had spoken these words unto Job, Jehovah said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.

⁴ They run and prepare themselves without [my] fault:
Awake thou to help me, and behold.

⁸⁶ All thy commandments are faithful:
They persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.

²² But Jesus perceiving their reasonings, answered and said unto them, { Why reason ye in your hearts?

¹⁹ For this is acceptable, if for conscience toward God a man endureth griefs, suffering wrongfully.

²⁶ And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins. ²⁷ So they gat them up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones. ²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah hath sent me to do all these works; for [I have] not [done them] of mine own mind. ²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Jehovah hath not sent me. ³⁰ But if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then ye shall understand that these men have despised Jehovah.
³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them; ³² and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. ³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly. ³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.

³ His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

²² They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame;
And the tent of the wicked shall be no more.

⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung:
They that have seen him shall say, Where is he?

³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps;
As a prince would I go near unto him.

³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not:
Yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

⁵ God will likewise destroy thee for ever;
He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent,
And root thee out of the land of the living. [Selah ⁶ The righteous also shall see [it], and fear,
And shall laugh at him, [saying],

⁹ Woe to him that getteth an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil! ¹⁰ Thou hast devised shame to thy house, by cutting off many peoples, and hast sinned against thy soul. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

⁴ I will cause it to go forth, saith Jehovah of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name; and it shall abide in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

⁸ Neither do they that go by say,
The blessing of Jehovah be upon you;
We bless you in the name of Jehovah.

⁵ The Lord at thy right hand
Will strike through kings in the day of his wrath.

⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath;
But righteousness delivereth from death.

⁴ Jehovah hath made everything for its own end;
Yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

² Jehovah is a jealous God and avengeth; Jehovah avengeth and is full of wrath; Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth [wrath] for his enemies.

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

⁹ the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment; ¹⁰ but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise dominion. Daring, self-willed, they tremble not to rail at dignities: ¹¹ whereas angels, though greater in might and power, bring not a railing judgment against them before the Lord. ¹² But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, railing in matters whereof they are ignorant, shall in their destroying surely be destroyed, ¹³ suffering wrong as the hire of wrong-doing; [men] that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you; ¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing; ¹⁵ forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the [son] of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing; ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved.

⁷ but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

¹³ wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.

¹⁷ for the great day of their wrath is come; and who is able to stand?

¹⁰ and repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

⁷ And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; ⁸ and I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added unto thee such and such things. ⁹ Wherefore hast thou despised the word of Jehovah, to do that which is evil in his sight? thou hast smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. ¹¹ Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house; and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou killed and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. ²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee, because thou hast sold thyself to do that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah. ²¹ Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will utterly sweep thee away and will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel: ²² and I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and hast made Israel to sin. ²³ And of Jezebel also spake Jehovah, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel. ²⁴ Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat.

¹⁹ [Ye say], God layeth up his iniquity for his children.
Let him recompense it unto himself, that he may know it:

¹¹ Who hath first given unto me, that I should repay him?
[Whatsoever is] under the whole heaven is mine.

²¹ These things hast thou done, and I kept silence;
Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such a one as thyself:
[But] I will reprove thee, and set [them] in order before thine eyes.

¹³ transgressing and denying Jehovah, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

³³ How trimmest thou thy way to seek love! therefore even the wicked women hast thou taught thy ways. ³⁴ Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the innocent poor: thou didst not find them breaking in; but it is because of all these things. ³⁵ Yet thou saidst, I am innocent; surely his anger is turned away from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

¹⁸ For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

²⁵ And as he reasoned of righteousness, and self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, Go thy way for this time; and when I have a convenient season, I will call thee unto me.

¹⁹ Avenge not yourselves, beloved, but give place unto the wrath [of God]: for it is written, Vengeance belongeth unto me; I will recompense, saith the Lord.

¹¹ But when Cephas came to Antioch, I resisted him to the face, because he stood condemned.

¹³ For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

²¹ The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of Sheol with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie still, even the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.
²² Asshur is there and all her company; her graves are round about her; all of them slain, fallen by the sword; ²³ whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit, and her company is round about her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who caused terror in the land of the living.
²⁴ There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, who caused their terror in the land of the living, and have borne their shame with them that go down to the pit. ²⁵ They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude; her graves are round about her; all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for their terror was caused in the land of the living, and they have borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of them that are slain.
²⁶ There is Meshech, Tubal, and all their multitude; their graves are round about them; all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they caused their terror in the land of the living. ²⁷ And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, that are gone down to Sheol with their weapons of war, and have laid their swords under their heads, and their iniquities are upon their bones; for [they were] the terror of the mighty in the land of the living. ²⁸ But thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with them that are slain by the sword.
²⁹ There is Edom, her kings and all her princes, who in their might are laid with them that are slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit. ³⁰ There are the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who are gone down with the slain; in the terror which they caused by their might they are put to shame; and they lie uncircumcised with them that are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit.
³¹ Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, saith the Lord Jehovah. ³² For I have put his terror in the land of the living; and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised, with them that are slain by the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord Jehovah.

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.

¹⁹ in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling;
And there the weary are at rest.

²² Who rejoice exceedingly,
And are glad, when they can find the grave?

¹⁶ It shall go down to the bars of Sheol,
When once there is rest in the dust.

²⁴ They are exalted; yet a little while, and they are gone;
Yea, they are brought low, they are taken out of the way as all others,
And are cut off as the tops of the ears of grain.

²³ For I know that thou wilt bring me to death,
And to the house appointed for all living.

⁴ One generation goeth, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth for ever.

⁷ and the dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the spirit returneth unto God who gave it.

²⁷ And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this [cometh] judgment;

⁴ But ye are forgers of lies;
Ye are all physicians of no value.
