¹ And Job again took up his parable, and said, ² As God liveth, who hath taken away my right,
And the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul: ³ (For my life is yet whole in me,
And the spirit of God is in my nostrils); ⁴ Surely my lips shall not speak uprighteousness,
Neither shall my tongue utter deceit. ⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you:
Till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go:
My heart shall not reproach [me] so long as I live. ⁷ Let mine enemy be as the wicked,
And let him that riseth up against me be as the unrighteous.
⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain,
When God taketh away his soul? ⁹ Will God hear his cry,
When trouble cometh upon him? ¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty,
And call upon God at all times? ¹¹ I will teach you concerning the hand of God;
That which is with the Almighty will I not conceal. ¹² Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it;
Why then are ye become altogether vain?
¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God,
And the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty: ¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword;
And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death,
And his widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust,
And prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on,
And the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as the moth,
And as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered [to his fathers];
He openeth his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters;
A tempest stealeth him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth;
And it sweepeth him out of his place. ²² For [God] shall hurl at him, and not spare:
He would fain flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him,
And shall hiss him out of his place.

⁷ And he took up his parable, and said,

The king of Moab from the mountains of the East:
Come, curse me Jacob,
And come, defy Israel.

⁴ I will incline mine ear to a parable:
I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

² I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old,

⁷ The legs of the lame hang loose;
So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

²¹ but in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Jehovah;

²⁰ And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. ²¹ I went out full, and Jehovah hath brought me home again empty; why call ye me Naomi, seeing Jehovah hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

¹³ Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as Jehovah liveth: lie down until the morning.

³⁹ For, as Jehovah liveth, who saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

⁴⁵ And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? Far from it: as Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

²¹ And, behold, I will send the lad, [saying], Go, find the arrows. If I say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee; take them, and come; for there is peace to thee and no hurt, as Jehovah liveth.

²⁶ Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing Jehovah hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now therefore let thine enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

³⁴ For in very deed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, who hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light so much as one man-child.

²⁷ And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother.

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

¹⁵ And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

²⁷ And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soul is vexed within her; and Jehovah hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

¹⁸ He will not suffer me to take my breath,
But filleth me with bitterness.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress,
That thou shouldest despise the work of thy hands,
And shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁵ For Job hath said, I am righteous,
And God hath taken away my right:

²⁷ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from Jehovah, and the justice [due] to me is passed away from my God?

² and thou shalt swear, As Jehovah liveth, in truth, in justice, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

² And though they say, As Jehovah liveth; surely they swear falsely.

¹⁶ And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, As Jehovah liveth; even as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built up in the midst of my people.

¹¹ Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

⁷ And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

⁸ But there is a spirit in man,
And the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

⁴ The Spirit of God hath made me,
And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

²² Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for wherein is he to be accounted of?

²⁵ neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁸ Now therefore be pleased to look upon me;
For surely I shall not lie to your face.

⁷ Will ye speak unrighteously for God,
And talk deceitfully for him?

⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am [accounted] a liar;
My wound is incurable, [though I am] without transgression.

⁵⁵ and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.

¹⁰ As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this glorying in the regions of Achaia.

¹ If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, and [the judges] judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.

⁹ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? renounce God, and die.

¹⁵ Behold, he will slay me; I have no hope:
Nevertheless I will maintain my ways before him.

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me:
My justice was as a robe and a diadem.

³ Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

⁷ And it was so, that, after Jehovah had spoken these words unto Job, Jehovah said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous,
Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

¹² For our glorying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

¹¹ But when Cephas came to Antioch, I resisted him to the face, because he stood condemned.

³ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

²⁰ Jehovah hath rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. ²¹ For I have kept the ways of Jehovah,
And have not wickedly departed from my God. ²² For all his ordinances were before me,
And I put not away his statutes from me. ²³ I was also perfect with him,
And I kept myself from mine iniquity.

¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go:
Keep her; for she is thy life.

¹⁶ Herein I also exercise myself to have a conscience void of offence toward God and men always.

¹¹ I am become foolish: ye compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I am nothing.

²⁰ because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God;

³² And the king said unto the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.

¹⁹ Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken dumb for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine adversaries.

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God;
And the hope of the godless man shall perish:

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail,
And they shall have no way to flee;
And their hope shall be the giving up of the ghost.

¹⁶ This also shall be my salvation,
That a godless man shall not come before him.

³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be barren,
And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short,
And the joy of the godless but for a moment?

³ Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,
And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath seized the godless ones: Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings? ¹⁵ He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from taking a bribe, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil:

²⁶ For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.

³⁶ For what doth it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? ³⁷ For what should a man give in exchange for his life?

²⁵ For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose or forfeit his own self?

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.}

⁹ But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted; and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days.

¹² There they cry, but none giveth answer,
Because of the pride of evil men. ¹³ Surely God will not hear an empty [cry],
Neither will the Almighty regard it.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save;
Even unto Jehovah, but he answered them not.

¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear:

⁷ When he is judged, let him come forth guilty;
And let his prayer be turned into sin.

²⁸ Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me:

⁹ He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law,
Even his prayer is an abomination.

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you; yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ Therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and they shall cry unto me, but I will not hearken unto them.

¹² When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt-offering and meal-offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

¹⁸ Therefore will I also deal in wrath; mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

¹⁴ And they have not cried unto me with their heart, but they howl upon their beds: they assemble themselves for grain and new wine; they rebel against me.

⁴ Then shall they cry unto Jehovah, but he will not answer them; yea, he will hide his face from them at that time, according as they have wrought evil in their doings.

¹³ And it is come to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear, so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said Jehovah of hosts;

²⁵ When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and he shall answer and say to you, I know you not whence ye are;

³¹ We know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth.

³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend [it] in your pleasures.

²⁶ For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty,
And shalt lift up thy face unto God. ²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee;
And thou shalt pay thy vows.

⁴ Delight thyself also in Jehovah;
And he will give thee the desires of thy heart.

⁴ Then will I go unto the altar of God,
Unto God my exceeding joy;
And upon the harp will I praise thee, O God, my God.

³⁴ When he slew them, then they inquired after him;
And they returned and sought God earnestly. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock,
And the Most High God their redeemer. ³⁶ But they flattered him with their mouth,
And lied unto him with their tongue.

¹⁸ Yet I will rejoice in Jehovah,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.

²¹ yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth.

¹ And he spake a parable unto them to the end that they ought always to pray, and not to faint;

² a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.

¹⁸ with all prayer and supplication praying at all seasons in the Spirit, and watching thereunto in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,

¹⁷ pray without ceasing;

⁵ Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as Jehovah my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it.

³ Behold, thou hast instructed many,
And thou hast strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Thy words have upholden him that was falling,
And thou hast made firm the feeble knees.

¹⁰ And be it still my consolation,
Yea, let me exult in pain that spareth not,
That I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

⁸ But there is a spirit in man,
And the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding. ⁹ It is not the great that are wise,
Nor the aged that understand justice. ¹⁰ Therefore I said, Hearken to me;
I also will show mine opinion.

¹⁷ O God, thou hast taught me from my youth;
And hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

¹¹ For Jehovah spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

²⁰ how I shrank not from declaring unto you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly, and from house to house,

²⁵ How forcible are words of uprightness!
But your reproof, what doth it reprove? ²⁶ Do ye think to reprove words,
Seeing that the speeches of one that is desperate are as wind? ²⁷ Yea, ye would cast [lots] upon the fatherless,
And make merchandise of your friend. ²⁸ Now therefore be pleased to look upon me;
For surely I shall not lie to your face. ²⁹ Return, I pray you, let there be no injustice;
Yea, return again, my cause is righteous.

⁴ But ye are forgers of lies;
Ye are all physicians of no value. ⁵ Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace!
And it would be your wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning,
And hearken to the pleadings of my lips. ⁷ Will ye speak unrighteously for God,
And talk deceitfully for him? ⁸ Will ye show partiality to him?
Will ye contend for God? ⁹ Is it good that he should search you out?
Or as one deceiveth a man, will ye deceive him?

³ Shall vain words have an end?
Or what provoketh thee that thou answerest?

² Surely there are mockers with me,
And mine eye dwelleth upon their provocation.

² How long will ye vex my soul,
And break me in pieces with words? ³ These ten times have ye reproached me:
Ye are not ashamed that ye deal hardly with me.

³ Suffer me, and I also will speak;
And after that I have spoken, mock on.

²⁸ For ye say, Where is the house of the prince?
And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt? ²⁹ Have ye not asked wayfaring men?
And do ye not know their evidences, ³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity?
That they are led forth to the day of wrath?

² How hast thou helped him that is without power!
How hast thou saved the arm that hath no strength! ³ How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom,
And plentifully declared sound knowledge! ⁴ To whom hast thou uttered words?
And whose spirit came forth from thee?

¹⁴ There is a vanity which is done upon the earth, that there are righteous men unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

¹ For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; whether it be love or hatred, man knoweth it not; all is before them.
² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; [and] he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. ³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that [they go] to the dead.

²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days,
Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor. ²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. ²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness,
And he is waited for of the sword. ²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying], Where is it?
He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Distress and anguish make him afraid;
They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ Because he hath stretched out his hand against God,
And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty; ²⁶ He runneth upon him with a [stiff] neck,
With the thick bosses of his bucklers; ²⁷ Because he hath covered his face with his fatness,
And gathered fat upon his loins; ²⁸ And he hath dwelt in desolate cities,
In houses which no man inhabited,
Which were ready to become heaps; ²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue,
Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness;
The flame shall dry up his branches,
And by the breath of [God's] mouth shall he go away. ³¹ Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself;
For vanity shall be his recompense. ³² It shall be accomplished before his time,
And his branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine,
And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree. ³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be barren,
And fire shall consume the tents of bribery. ³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity,
And their heart prepareth deceit.

¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor;
He hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up.
²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him,
He shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth. ²¹ There was nothing left that he devoured not;
Therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits:
The hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. ²³ When he is about to fill his belly,
[God] will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him,
And will rain it upon him while he is eating. ²⁴ He shall flee from the iron weapon,
And the bow of brass shall strike him through. ²⁵ He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body;
Yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall:
Terrors are upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is laid up for his treasures:
A fire not blown [by man] shall devour him;
It shall consume that which is left in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity,
And the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart;
[His goods] shall flow away in the day of his wrath. ²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God,
And the heritage appointed unto him by God.

⁶ Upon the wicked he will rain snares;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy,
Now will I arise, saith Jehovah;
I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

²² Rob not the poor, because he is poor;
Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: ²³ For Jehovah will plead their cause,
And despoil of life those that despoil them.

¹³ but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong [his] days, [which are] as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! [it shall be] ill [with him]; for what his hands have done shall be done unto him.

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner [from his right], and fear not me, saith Jehovah of hosts.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure; ye have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter. ⁶ Ye have condemned, ye have killed the righteous [one]; he doth not resist you.

⁹ the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment;

³² Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people; and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day: and there shall be nought in the power of thy hand.

⁴¹ Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be thine; for they shall go into captivity.

⁵ They that were full have hired out themselves for bread;
And they that were hungry have ceased [to hunger]:
Yea, the barren hath borne seven;
And she that hath many children languisheth.

⁷ And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of Jehovah, at the hand of Jezebel. ⁸ For the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel.

⁶ Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be on my side, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by to-morrow this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up. ⁷ And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and slew them, even seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them unto him to Jezreel. ⁸ And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning. ⁹ And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye are righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him; but who smote all these? ¹⁰ Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of Jehovah, which Jehovah spake concerning the house of Ahab: for Jehovah hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.

¹¹ And Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

⁵ And the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they would unto them that hated them. ⁶ And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men. ⁷ And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha, ⁸ and Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha, ⁹ and Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vaizatha, ¹⁰ the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jew's enemy, slew they; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness,
And he is waited for of the sword.

¹⁰ His children shall seek the favor of the poor,
And his hands shall give back his wealth.

¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock,
And their children dance. ¹² They sing to the timbrel and harp,
And rejoice at the sound of the pipe.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off;
In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

¹³ Ephraim, like as I have seen Tyre, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring out his children to the slayer. ¹⁴ Give them, O Jehovah—what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

²⁹ For behold, the days are coming, in which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts that never gave suck.

¹⁰ therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam every man-child, him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel, and will utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam, as a man sweepeth away dung, till it be all gone. ¹¹ Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat: for Jehovah hath spoken it.

³ behold, I will utterly sweep away Baasha and his house; and I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. ⁴ Him that dieth of Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth of his in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat.

²¹ Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will utterly sweep thee away and will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel: ²² and I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and hast made Israel to sin. ²³ And of Jezebel also spake Jehovah, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel. ²⁴ Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat.

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword;
And their widows made no lamentation.

¹⁸ Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: they shall not lament for him, [saying], Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! They shall not lament for him, [saying] Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!

²⁷ And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycomore-trees that are in the lowland, for abundance.

²⁴ And lay thou [thy] treasure in the dust,
And [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the brooks;

⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with pledges!

³ And Tyre did build herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.

¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal:

² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.

²² A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children;
And the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.

⁸ He that augmenteth his substance by interest and increase,
Gathereth it for him that hath pity on the poor.

²⁶ For to the man that pleaseth him [God] giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that pleaseth God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹⁴ Whose confidence shall break in sunder,
And whose trust is a spider's web. ¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand:
He shall hold fast thereby, but it shall not endure.

⁸ And the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

¹² My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me as a shepherd's tent:
I have rolled up, like a weaver, my life; he will cut me off from the loom:
From day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

⁸ For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool; but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation unto all generations.

⁶ And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden; he hath destroyed his place of assembly:
Jehovah hath caused solemn assembly and sabbath to be forgotten in Zion,
And hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.

¹⁰ The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,
Until Shiloh come:
And unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be.

⁸ The eye of him that seeth me shall behold me no more;
Thine eyes shall be upon me, but I shall not be.

²² They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame;
And the tent of the wicked shall be no more.

¹⁰ But man dieth, and is laid low:
Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

¹² So man lieth down and riseth not:
Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake,
Nor be roused out of their sleep.
¹³ Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol,
That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past,
That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! ¹⁴ If a man die, shall he live [again]?
All the days of my warfare would I wait,
Till my release should come. ¹⁵ Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee:
Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.

⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung:
They that have seen him shall say, Where is he? ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found:
Yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him shall see him no more;
Neither shall his place any more behold him.

²³ One dieth in his full strength,
Being wholly at ease and quiet: ²⁴ His pails are full of milk,
And the marrow of his bones is moistened. ²⁵ And another dieth in bitterness of soul,
And never tasteth of good. ²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust,
And the worm covereth them.

³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity?
That they are led forth to the day of wrath?

²⁴ They are exalted; yet a little while, and they are gone;
Yea, they are brought low, they are taken out of the way as all others,
And are cut off as the tops of the ears of grain.

²³ For I know that thou wilt bring me to death,
And to the house appointed for all living.

⁹ Before your pots can feel the thorns,
He will take them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike.

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment!
They are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh,
So, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou wilt despise their image.

² and they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, which they have loved, and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and which they have sought, and which they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried, they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

¹² whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

²⁹ And it came to pass at midnight, that Jehovah smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the first-born of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the first-born of cattle.

³⁵ And it came to pass that night, that the angel of Jehovah went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side,
And shall chase him at his heels.

⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found:
Yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.

²³ When he is about to fill his belly,
[God] will cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him,
And will rain it upon him while he is eating.

¹⁸ That they are as stubble before the wind,
And as chaff that the storm carrieth away?

¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time,
Whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

²⁰ In a moment they die, even at midnight;
The people are shaken and pass away,
And the mighty are taken away without hand.

⁴ The cords of death compassed me,
And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

⁷ Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterfalls:
All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink:
Let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. ¹⁵ Let not the waterflood overwhelm me,
Neither let the deep swallow me up;
And let not the pit shut its mouth upon me.

³⁰ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.

³ For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas,
And the flood was round about me;
All thy waves and thy billows passed over me.

²³ And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and Jehovah sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down unto the earth; and Jehovah rained hail upon the land of Egypt. ²⁴ So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. ²⁵ And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field.

¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house,
Neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁵ So pursue them with thy tempest,
And terrify them with thy storm.

¹⁷ I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

¹⁵ Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the breath of Jehovah coming up from the wilderness; and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall make spoil of the treasure of all goodly vessels.

³ Jehovah is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means clear [the guilty]: Jehovah hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. ⁴ He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel; and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. ⁵ The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt; and the earth is upheaved at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. ⁶ Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him. ⁷ Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that take refuge in him. ⁸ But with an over-running flood he will make a full end of her place, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.

²⁷ and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof.}

¹⁴ For I will this time send all my plagues upon thy heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.

²⁵ And he took off their chariot wheels, and they drove them heavily; so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for Jehovah fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
²⁶ And Jehovah said unto Moses, Stretch out thy hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. ²⁷ And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and Jehovah overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. ²⁸ And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, even all the host of Pharaoh that went in after them into the sea; there remained not so much as one of them.

²⁰ Jehovah will not pardon him, but then the anger of Jehovah and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and Jehovah will blot out his name from under heaven.

²³ I will heap evils upon them;
I will spend mine arrows upon them:

¹¹ And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

¹⁷ Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. ¹⁸ And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. ¹⁹ And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him. ²⁰ And he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No. ²¹ Then Jael Heber's wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.

²⁴ He shall flee from the iron weapon,
And the bow of brass shall strike him through.

³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?

¹⁴ And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith Jehovah: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have compassion, that I should not destroy them.

¹¹ Wherefore, as I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, therefore will I also diminish [thee]; neither shall mine eye spare, and I also will have no pity.

⁵ And to the others he said in my hearing, Go ye through the city after him, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity; ⁶ slay utterly the old man, the young man and the virgin, and little children and women; but come not near any man upon whom is the mark: and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the old men that were before the house.

¹⁴ I, Jehovah, have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it: I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord Jehovah.

¹⁴ And flight shall perish from the swift; and the strong shall not strengthen his force; neither shall the mighty deliver himself;

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar: and he said, Smite the capitals, that the thresholds may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape. ² Though they dig into Sheol, thence shall my hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down. ³ And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and it shall bite them.

³² He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?

⁴ For if God spared not angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; ⁵ and spared not the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

⁸ And though this house is so high, yet shall every one that passeth by it be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath Jehovah done thus unto this land, and to this house?

²² as the days wherein the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a good day; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor. ²³ And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them; ²⁴ because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them; ²⁵ but when [the matter] came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness,
And chased out of the world.

¹⁰ When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth;
And when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

⁸ And I will make this city an astonishment, and a hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

¹⁵ All that pass by clap their hands at thee;
They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, [saying],
Is this the city that men called
The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

¹⁶ For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I may make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing: and ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

¹⁵ This is the joyous city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none besides me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, and ye apostles, and ye prophets; for God hath judged your judgment on her.
