¹ After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day. ² And Job answered and said: ³ Let the day perish wherein I was born,
And the night which said,
There is a man-child conceived. ⁴ Let that day be darkness;
Let not God from above seek for it,
Neither let the light shine upon it. ⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own;
Let a cloud dwell upon it;
Let all that maketh black the day terrify it. ⁶ As for that night, let thick darkness seize upon it:
Let it not rejoice among the days of the year;
Let it not come into the number of the months. ⁷ Lo, let that night be barren;
Let no joyful voice come therein. ⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day,
Who are ready to rouse up leviathan. ⁹ Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark:
Let it look for light, but have none;
Neither let it behold the eyelids of the morning: ¹⁰ Because it shut not up the doors of my [mother's] womb,
Nor hid trouble from mine eyes. ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb?
Why did I not give up the ghost when my mother bare me? ¹² Why did the knees receive me?
Or why the breast, that I should suck? ¹³ For now should I have lain down and been quiet;
I should have slept; then had I been at rest, ¹⁴ With kings and counsellors of the earth,
Who built up waste places for themselves; ¹⁵ Or with princes that had gold,
Who filled their houses with silver ¹⁶ Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been,
As infants that never saw light. ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling;
And there the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners are at ease together;
They hear not the voice of the taskmaster. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there:
And the servant is free from his master.
²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery,
And life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ Who long for death, but it cometh not,
And dig for it more than for hid treasures; ²² Who rejoice exceedingly,
And are glad, when they can find the grave? ²³ [Why is light given] to a man whose way is hid,
And whom God hath hedged in? ²⁴ For my sighing cometh before I eat,
And my groanings are poured out like water. ²⁵ For the thing which I fear cometh upon me,
And that which I am afraid of cometh unto me. ²⁶ I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest;
But trouble cometh.

¹¹ But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

²² In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

⁵ But put forth thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

⁹ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? renounce God, and die. ¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

³ Let the day perish wherein I was born,
And the night which said,
There is a man-child conceived.

¹⁶ Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vanity;
He multiplieth words without knowledge.

² I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good;
And my sorrow was stirred. ³ My heart was hot within me;
While I was musing the fire burned:
[Then] spake I with my tongue:

³³ Because they were rebellious against his spirit,
And he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man-child is born unto thee; making him very glad.

¹⁴ Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

¹⁸ Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb?
I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me. ¹⁹ I should have been as though I had not been;
I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

¹⁰ Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; [yet] every one of them doth curse me.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man-child is born unto thee; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which Jehovah overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime; ¹⁷ because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great. ¹⁸ Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

²² And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days; ²³ they saw not one another, neither rose any one from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

¹² a land which Jehovah thy God careth for: the eyes of Jehovah thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

² a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, as the dawn spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after them, even to the years of many generations.

¹⁸ Woe unto you that desire the day of Jehovah! Wherefore would ye have the day of Jehovah? It is darkness, and not light.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

²⁰ And when neither sun nor stars shone upon [us] for many days, and no small tempest lay on [us], all hope that we should be saved was now taken away.

¹⁰ And the fifth poured out his bowl upon the throne of the beast; and his kingdom was darkened; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

¹¹ And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the heart of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.

²¹ Before I go whence I shall not return,
[Even] to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² The land dark as midnight,
[The land] of the shadow of death, without any order,
And where the light is as midnight.

¹⁶ My face is red with weeping,
And on my eyelids is the shadow of death;

¹⁷ For the morning is to all of them as thick darkness;
For they know the terrors of the thick darkness.

³ [Man] setteth an end to darkness,
And searcheth out, to the furthest bound,
The stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.

¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee?
Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; for thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

¹⁹ That thou hast sore broken us in the place of jackals,
And covered us with the shadow of death.

¹⁰ Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
Being bound in affliction and iron,

¹⁴ He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And brake their bonds in sunder.

² The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

⁶ Neither said they, Where is Jehovah that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that none passed through, and where no man dwelt?

²⁸ For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and I have not repented, neither will I turn back from it.

¹⁶ Give glory to Jehovah your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.

³ For the day is near, even the day of Jehovah is near; it shall be a day of clouds, a time of the nations.

¹² As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek out my sheep; and I will deliver them out of all places whither they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

⁸ [seek him] that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name);

¹⁰ And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

¹⁶ The people that sat in darkness
Saw a great light,
And to them that sat in the region and shadow of death,
To them did light spring up.

⁷⁹ To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death;
To guide our feet into the way of peace.

¹⁸ For ye are not come unto [a mount] that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

²⁰ It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall shepherds make their flocks to lie down there. ²¹ But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and ostriches shall dwell there, and wild goats shall dance there. ²² And wolves shall cry in their castles, and jackals in the pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

⁸ The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

³⁴ Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land shall become a waste.

²² And the voice of harpers and minstrels and flute-players and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft, shall be found any more at all in thee; and the voice of a mill shall be heard no more at all in thee; ²³ and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth; for with thy sorcery were all the nations deceived.

²⁵ And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations unto this day; and they made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations.

¹ Canst thou draw out leviathan with a fishhook?
Or press down his tongue with a cord?

¹⁰ None is so fierce that he dare stir him up;
Who then is he that can stand before me?

²⁵ When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid:
By reason of consternation they are beside themselves.

¹⁷ Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for the skilful women, that they may come: ¹⁸ and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.

¹⁶ Therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the Lord: Wailing shall be in all the broad ways; and they shall say in all the streets, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful in lamentation to wailing.

¹⁷ and say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not mourn.

³⁸ And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he beholdeth a tumult, and [many] weeping and wailing greatly.

²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came;
And when I waited for light, there came darkness.

¹⁸ His sneezings flash forth light,
And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

¹⁵ We looked for peace, but no good came; [and] for a time of healing, and, behold, dismay!

¹⁸ For Jehovah had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.

³¹ And Jehovah saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

⁵ but unto Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Jehovah had shut up her womb.

² Oh that my vexation were but weighed,
And all my calamity laid in the balances! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas:
Therefore have my words been rash.

¹ My soul is weary of my life;
I will give free course to my complaint;
I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

² Even to-day is my complaint rebellious:
My stroke is heavier than my groaning.

³ If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul be not filled with good, and moreover he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he: ⁴ for it cometh in vanity, and departeth in darkness, and the name thereof is covered with darkness; ⁵ moreover it hath not seen the sun nor known it; this hath rest rather than the other:

¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.

¹⁷ because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great.

⁹ But thou art he that took me out of the womb;
Thou didst make me trust [when I was] upon my mother's breasts. ¹⁰ I was cast upon thee from the womb;
Thou art my God since my mother bare me.

⁸ [Let them be] as a snail which melteth and passeth away,
[Like] the untimely birth of a woman, that hath not seen the sun.

⁶ By thee have I been holden up from the womb;
Thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels:
My praise shall be continually of thee.

¹³ For thou didst form my inward parts:
Thou didst cover me in my mother's womb. ¹⁴ I will give thanks unto thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
Wonderful are thy works;
And that my soul knoweth right well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from thee,
When I was made in secret,
[And] curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. ¹⁶ Thine eyes did see mine unformed substance;
And in thy book they were all written,
[Even] the days that were ordained [for me],
When as yet there was none of them.

³ Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, that have been borne [by me] from their birth, that have been carried from the womb;

¹⁴ Give them, O Jehovah—what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

³ And she said, Behold, my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; that she may bear upon my knees, and I also may obtain children by her.

²³ And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph's knees.

¹² For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream: and ye shall suck [thereof]; ye shall be borne upon the side, and shall be dandled upon the knees.

⁴ And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to cleanse thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all. ⁵ No eye pitied thee, to do any of these things unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, for that thy person was abhorred, in the day that thou wast born.

⁸ The eye of him that seeth me shall behold me no more;
Thine eyes shall be upon me, but I shall not be. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away,
So he that goeth down to Sheol shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house,
Neither shall his place know him any more.

²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity?
For now shall I lie down in the dust;
And thou wilt seek me diligently, but I shall not be.

²² The land dark as midnight,
[The land] of the shadow of death, without any order,
And where the light is as midnight.

¹⁰ But man dieth, and is laid low:
Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? ¹¹ [As] the waters fail from the sea,
And the river wasteth and drieth up; ¹² So man lieth down and riseth not:
Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake,
Nor be roused out of their sleep.

¹³ If I look for Sheol as my house;
If I have spread my couch in the darkness;

²⁷ Whom I, even I, shall see, on my side,
And mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger.
My heart is consumed within me.

¹³ They spend their days in prosperity,
And in a moment they go down to Sheol.

²³ One dieth in his full strength,
Being wholly at ease and quiet:

¹⁰ Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.

¹⁰ And David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

⁴³ And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.

¹⁷ He leadeth counsellors away stripped,
And judges maketh he fools.

²⁸ And he hath dwelt in desolate cities,
In houses which no man inhabited,
Which were ready to become heaps;

²³ For I know that thou wilt bring me to death,
And to the house appointed for all living.

⁶ They that trust in their wealth,
And boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ None [of them] can by any means redeem his brother,
Nor give to God a ransom for him; ⁸ (For the redemption of their life is costly,
And it faileth for ever), ⁹ That he should still live alway,
That he should not see corruption. ¹⁰ For he shall see it.
Wise men die;
The fool and the brutish alike perish,
And leave their wealth to others.

¹⁴ They are appointed as a flock for Sheol;
Death shall be their shepherd;
And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;
And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume,
That there be no habitation for it.

⁴⁸ What man is he that shall live and not see death,
That shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? [Selah

⁸ There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.

⁸ Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

¹⁰ All they shall answer and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? ¹¹ Thy pomp is brought down to Sheol, [and] the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and worms cover thee.
¹² How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations! ¹³ And thou saidst in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north; ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. ¹⁵ Yet thou shalt be brought down to Sheol, to the uttermost parts of the pit. ¹⁶ They that see thee shall gaze at thee, they shall consider thee, [saying], Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

¹² And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places; thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

²⁰ then will I bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make thee to dwell in the nether parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I will set glory in the land of the living:

¹⁸ Damascus was thy merchant for the multitude of thy handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool. ¹⁹ Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for thy wares: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were among thy merchandise. ²⁰ Dedan was thy trafficker in precious cloths for riding. ²¹ Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they were the merchants of thy hand; in lambs, and rams, and goats, in these were they thy merchants. ²² The traffickers of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy traffickers; they traded for thy wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traffickers of Sheba, Asshur [and] Chilmad, were thy traffickers. ²⁴ These were thy traffickers in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. ²⁵ The ships of Tarshish were thy caravans for thy merchandise: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.
²⁶ Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters: the east wind hath broken thee in the heart of the seas. ²⁷ Thy riches, and thy wares, thy merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the dealers in thy merchandise, and all thy men of war, that are in thee, with all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of thy ruin. ²⁸ At the sound of the cry of thy pilots the suburbs shall shake. ²⁹ And all that handled the oar, the mariners, [and] all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand upon the land, ³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard over thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes: ³¹ and they shall make themselves bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee in bitterness of soul with bitter mourning. ³² And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and lament over thee, [saying], Who is there like Tyre, like her that is brought to silence in the midst of the sea?

¹⁸ And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah my God, to do less or more.

²⁷ And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycomore-trees that are in the lowland, for abundance.

²¹ He poureth contempt upon princes,
And looseth the belt of the strong.

²⁵ And the Almighty will be thy treasure,
And precious silver unto thee.

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust,
And prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on,
And the innocent shall divide the silver.

⁷ And their land is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land also is full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots.

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of Jehovah's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he will make an end, yea, a terrible end, of all them that dwell in the land.

³ And Tyre did build herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.

³ If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul be not filled with good, and moreover he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he:

⁸ and last of all, as to the [child] untimely born, he appeared to me also.

¹³ Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol,
That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past,
That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

¹⁶ It shall go down to the bars of Sheol,
When once there is rest in the dust.

⁵ Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me,
And horror hath overwhelmed me. ⁶ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove!
Then would I fly away, and be at rest. ⁷ Lo, then would I wander far off,
I would lodge in the wilderness. [Selah
⁸ I would haste me to a shelter
From the stormy wind and tempest.

¹ The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart; and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil [to come]. ² He entereth into peace; they rest in their beds, each one that walketh in his uprightness.

²⁸ And be not afraid of them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

⁴ And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

⁶ if so be that it is a righteous thing with God to recompense affliction to them that afflict you, ⁷ and to you that are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power in flaming fire,

⁹ There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God.

¹¹ Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience.

⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed [his] righteous soul from day to day with [their] lawless deeds):

¹³ And I heard a voice from heaven saying, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; for their works follow with them.

⁶ And the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, ⁷ Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. ⁸ And the number of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish aught thereof: for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

¹⁵ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants? ¹⁶ There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault it in thine own people. ¹⁷ But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice to Jehovah. ¹⁸ Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the number of bricks. ¹⁹ And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, when it was said, Ye shall not diminish aught from your bricks, [your] daily tasks.

³ And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

⁷ He scorneth the tumult of the city,
Neither heareth he the shoutings of the driver.

³ And it shall come to pass in the day that Jehovah shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy trouble, and from the hard service wherein thou wast made to serve, ⁴ that thou shalt take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

² Both low and high,
Rich and poor together.

¹⁴ They are appointed as a flock for Sheol;
Death shall be their shepherd;
And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;
And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume,
That there be no habitation for it. ¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol;
For he will receive me. [Selah ¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich,
When the glory of his house is increased: ¹⁷ For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away;
His glory shall not descend after him. ¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul
(And men praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself), ¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
They shall never see the light. ²⁰ Man that is in honor, and understandeth not,
Is like the beasts that perish.

⁵ yea, they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and terrors [shall be] in the way; and the almond-tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail; because man goeth to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about the streets:

⁷ and the dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the spirit returneth unto God who gave it.

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

²⁷ And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this [cometh] judgment;

¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto Jehovah, and wept sore.

²⁷ And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soul is vexed within her; and Jehovah hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

¹⁶ Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been,
As infants that never saw light.

⁹ Even that it would please God to crush me;
That he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling,
And death rather than [these] my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe [my life]; I would not live alway:
Let me alone; for my days are vanity.

²⁸ He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit,
And my life shall behold the light.

³⁰ To bring back his soul from the pit,
That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

⁶ Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish,
And wine unto the bitter in soul:

¹⁸ Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

¹⁵ And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough; now, O Jehovah, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

⁴ If thou seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hid treasures:

³ Therefore now, O Jehovah, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁶ And in those days men shall seek death, and shall in no wise find it; and they shall desire to die, and death fleeth from them.

¹⁴ Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again;
He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

⁶ Know now that God hath subverted me [in my cause],
And hath compassed me with his net.

⁸ He hath walled up my way that I cannot pass,
And hath set darkness in my paths.

¹² His troops come on together,
And cast up their way against me,
And encamp round about my tent.

⁸ And thou hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy;
Thou hast set my feet in a large place.

⁸ Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me;
Thou hast made me an abomination unto them:
I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

²⁷ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from Jehovah, and the justice [due] to me is passed away from my God?

⁷ He hath walled me about, that I cannot go forth; he hath made my chain heavy.

⁹ He hath walled up my ways with hewn stone; he hath made my paths crooked.

⁶ Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, that she shall not find her paths.

⁷ My soul refuseth to touch [them];
They are as loathsome food to me.

¹⁹ How long wilt thou not look away from me,
Nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?

²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread,
And his soul dainty food.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
[Why art thou so] far from helping me, [and from] the words of my groaning? ² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answerest not;
And in the night season, and am not silent.

³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away
Through my groaning all the day long.

⁸ I am faint and sore bruised:
I have groaned by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

³ My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? ⁴ These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me,
How I went with the throng, and led them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping holyday.

⁵ Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears,
And given them tears to drink in large measure.

⁹ For I have eaten ashes like bread,
And mingled my drink with weeping,

¹¹ We roar all like bears, and moan sore like doves: we look for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

⁸ Yea, when I cry, and call for help, he shutteth out my prayer.

⁵ And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me;
They chase mine honor as the wind;
And my welfare is passed away as a cloud.

²³ For calamity from God is a terror to me,
And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

¹⁴ Then thou scarest me with dreams,
And terrifiest me through visions:

⁹ Will God hear his cry,
When trouble cometh upon him?

¹¹ Quicken me, O Jehovah, for thy name's sake:
In thy righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.
