¹ Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith,
Than a house full of feasting with strife. ² A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame,
And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren. ³ The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold;
But Jehovah trieth the hearts. ⁴ An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips;
And a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue. ⁵ Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker;
[And] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished. ⁶ Children's children are the crown of old men;
And the glory of children are their fathers. ⁷ Excellent speech becometh not a fool;
Much less do lying lips a prince. ⁸ A bribe is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it;
Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth. ⁹ He that covereth a transgression seeketh love;
But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends. ¹⁰ A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding
Than a hundred stripes into a fool. ¹¹ An evil man seeketh only rebellion;
Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him. ¹² Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man,
Rather than a fool in his folly. ¹³ Whoso rewardeth evil for good,
Evil shall not depart from his house. ¹⁴ The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water:
Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling. ¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous,
Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah. ¹⁶ Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom,
Seeing he hath no understanding? ¹⁷ A friend loveth at all times;
And a brother is born for adversity. ¹⁸ A man void of understanding striketh hands,
And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor. ¹⁹ He loveth transgression that loveth strife:
He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction. ²⁰ He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good;
And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief. ²¹ He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow;
And the father of a fool hath no joy. ²² A cheerful heart is a good medicine;
But a broken spirit drieth up the bones. ²³ A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom,
To pervert the ways of justice. ²⁴ Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding;
But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth. ²⁵ A foolish son is a grief to his father,
And bitterness to her that bare him. ²⁶ Also to punish the righteous is not good,
[Nor] to smite the noble for [their] uprightness. ²⁷ He that spareth his words hath knowledge;
And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding. ²⁸ Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise;
When he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent.

¹⁶ Better is a little that the righteous hath
Than the abundance of many wicked.

¹⁴ Sacrifices of peace-offerings are with me;
This day have I paid my vows.

¹⁷ Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is,
Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

⁹ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,
Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in a desert land,
Than with a contentious and fretful woman.

⁴ but thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac. ⁵ And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? ⁶ And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. ⁷ Jehovah, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house, and from the land of my nativity, and who spake unto me, and who sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife for my son from thence. ⁸ And if the woman be not willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath; only thou shalt not bring my son thither again. ⁹ And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning this matter.
¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels, of the camels of his master, and departed, having all goodly things of his master's in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. ¹¹ And he made the camels to kneel down without the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water. ¹² And he said, O Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, send me, I pray thee, good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham. ¹³ Behold, I am standing by the fountain of water; and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water: ¹⁴ and let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast showed kindness unto my master. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. ¹⁶ And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the fountain, and filled her pitcher, and came up. ¹⁷ And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Give me to drink, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher. ¹⁸ And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. ¹⁹ And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. ²⁰ And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw, and drew for all his camels. ²¹ And the man looked stedfastly on her, holding his peace, to know whether Jehovah had made his journey prosperous or not. ²² And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold, ²³ and said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee. Is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in? ²⁴ And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bare unto Nahor. ²⁵ She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. ²⁶ And the man bowed his head, and worshipped Jehovah. ²⁷ And he said, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, who hath not forsaken his lovingkindness and his truth toward my master: as for me, Jehovah hath led me in the way to the house of my master's brethren.
²⁸ And the damsel ran, and told her mother's house according to these words. ²⁹ And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the fountain. ³⁰ And it came to pass, when he saw the ring, and the bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he was standing by the camels at the fountain. ³¹ And he said, Come in, thou blessed of Jehovah; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. ³² And the man came into the house, and he ungirded the camels; and he gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men that were with him. ³³ And there was set food before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. ³⁴ And he said, I am Abraham's servant. ³⁵ And Jehovah hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and men-servants and maid-servants, and camels and asses. ³⁶ And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. ³⁷ And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: ³⁸ but thou shalt go unto my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son. ³⁹ And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. ⁴⁰ And he said unto me, Jehovah, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father's house: ⁴¹ then shalt thou be clear from my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give her not to thee, thou shalt be clear from my oath. ⁴² And I came this day unto the fountain, and said, O Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: ⁴³ behold, I am standing by the fountain of water; and let it come to pass, that the maiden that cometh forth to draw, to whom I shall say, Give me, I pray thee, a little water from thy pitcher to drink; ⁴⁴ and she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom Jehovah hath appointed for my master's son. ⁴⁵ And before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the fountain, and drew: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. ⁴⁶ And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. ⁴⁷ And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the ring upon her nose, and the bracelets upon her hands. ⁴⁸ And I bowed my head, and worshipped Jehovah, and blessed Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter for his son. ⁴⁹ And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
⁵⁰ Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from Jehovah: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. ⁵¹ Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as Jehovah hath spoken. ⁵² And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the earth unto Jehovah. ⁵³ And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. ⁵⁴ And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. ⁵⁵ And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us [a few] days, at the least ten; after that she shall go. ⁵⁶ And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing Jehovah hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. ⁵⁷ And they said, We will call the damsel, and inquire at her mouth. ⁵⁸ And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. ⁵⁹ And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men. ⁶⁰ And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Our sister, be thou [the mother] of thousands of ten thousands, and let thy seed possess the gate of those that hate them.
⁶¹ And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. ⁶² And Isaac came from the way of Beer-lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the land of the South. ⁶³ And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, there were camels coming. ⁶⁴ And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel. ⁶⁵ And she said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant said, It is my master: and she took her veil, and covered herself. ⁶⁶ And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. ⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

⁵ He that gathereth in summer is a wise son;
[But] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

²⁹ He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind;
And the foolish shall be servant to the wise of heart.

³⁵ The king's favor is toward a servant that dealeth wisely;
But his wrath will be [against] him that causeth shame.

²⁶ He that doeth violence to his father, and chaseth away his mother,
Is a son that causeth shame and bringeth reproach.

¹⁵ The rod and reproof give wisdom;
But a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.

¹³ Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth not how to receive admonition any more.

¹⁷ I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, that are present here, offer willingly unto thee.

² Examine me, O Jehovah, and prove me;
Try my heart and my mind.

¹⁰ For thou, O God, hast proved us:
Thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.

²¹ The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold;
And a man is [tried] by his praise.

¹⁰ Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

¹⁰ I, Jehovah, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

⁹ And I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people; and they shall say, Jehovah is my God.

² But who can abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: ³ and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer unto Jehovah offerings in righteousness.

⁷ that the proof of your faith, [being] more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

⁷ And Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, ⁸ that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that discloseth to me when my son maketh a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or discloseth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? ⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.
¹¹ Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.

⁶ Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king. ⁷ But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, that we may inquire of him? ⁸ And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Jehovah, Micaiah the son of Imlah: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so. ⁹ Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, Fetch quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah. ¹⁰ Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them. ¹¹ And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until they be consumed. ¹² And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper; for Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king.
¹³ And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets [declare] good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak thou good. ¹⁴ And Micaiah said, As Jehovah liveth, what Jehovah saith unto me, that will I speak. ¹⁵ And when he was come to the king, the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he answered him, Go up and prosper; and Jehovah will deliver it into the hand of the king. ¹⁶ And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou speak unto me nothing but the truth in the name of Jehovah? ¹⁷ And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and Jehovah said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in peace. ¹⁸ And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil? ¹⁹ And [Micaiah] said, Therefore hear thou the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. ²⁰ And Jehovah said, Who shall entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner; and another said on that manner. ²¹ And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him. ²² And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so. ²³ Now therefore, behold, Jehovah hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and Jehovah hath spoken evil concerning thee.
²⁴ Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of Jehovah from me to speak unto thee? ²⁵ And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see on that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself. ²⁶ And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and carry him back unto Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king's son; ²⁷ and say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace. ²⁸ And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, Jehovah hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hear, ye peoples, all of you.

⁴ They that forsake the law praise the wicked;
But such as keep the law contend with them.

¹⁰ that say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits,

³¹ the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

³ For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; ⁴ and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables. ⁵ They are of the world: therefore speak they [as] of the world, and the world heareth them.

³ And [I saw] one of his heads as though it had been smitten unto death; and his death-stroke was healed: and the whole earth wondered after the beast; ⁴ and they worshipped the dragon, because he gave his authority unto the beast; and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? and who is able to war with him? ⁵ and there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and there was given to him authority to continue forty and two months. ⁶ And he opened his mouth for blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, [even] them that dwell in the heaven. ⁷ And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and there was given to him authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation. ⁸ And all that dwell on the earth shall worship him, [every one] whose name hath not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that hath been slain.

²⁹ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me,
Or lifted up myself when evil found him

⁹ For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up;
And the reproaches of them that reproach thee are fallen upon me.

²¹ He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth;
But he that hath pity on the poor, happy is he.

³¹ He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker;
But he that hath mercy on the needy honoreth him.

⁵ Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to Jehovah:
[Though] hand [join] in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

¹⁷ Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth,
And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown; ¹⁸ Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him,
And he turn away his wrath from him.

¹⁶ As for me, I have not hastened from being a shepherd after thee; neither have I desired the woeful day; thou knowest: that which came out of my lips was before thy face.

¹¹ In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them. ¹² But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress. ¹³ Enter not into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, look not thou on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither lay ye [hands] on their substance in the day of their calamity.

¹⁶ For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually; yea, they shall drink, and swallow down, and shall be as though they had not been.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that rejoice; weep with them that weep.

¹⁷ But whoso hath the world's goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him?

²³ And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph's knees.

¹⁴ And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. ¹⁵ And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

¹² Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it, for David thy father's sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.

⁴ Nevertheless for David's sake did Jehovah his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem;

¹⁶ And after this Job lived a hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, [even] four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

³ Lo, children are a heritage of Jehovah;
[And] the fruit of the womb is [his] reward. ⁴ As arrows in the hand of a mighty man,
So are the children of youth. ⁵ Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
They shall not be put to shame,
When they speak with their enemies in the gate.

³ Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine,
In the innermost parts of thy house;
Thy children like olive plants,
Round about thy table. ⁴ Behold, thus shall the man be blessed That feareth Jehovah. ⁵ Jehovah bless thee out of Zion:
And see thou the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. ⁶ Yea, see thou thy children's children.
Peace be upon Israel.

²² A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children;
And the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.

³¹ The hoary head is a crown of glory;
It shall be found in the way of righteousness.

³ The God of Israel said,
The Rock of Israel spake to me:
One that ruleth over men righteously,
That ruleth in the fear of God,

¹² Yea, of a surety, God will not do wickedly,
Neither will the Almighty pervert justice.

¹⁶ But unto the wicked God saith,
What hast thou to do to declare my statutes,
And that thou hast taken my covenant in thy mouth, ¹⁷ Seeing thou hatest instruction,
And castest my words behind thee?

³ I will set no base thing before mine eyes:
I hate the work of them that turn aside;
It shall not cleave unto me. ⁴ A perverse heart shall depart from me:
I will know no evil thing. ⁵ Whoso privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I destroy:
Him that hath a high look and a proud heart will I not suffer.

¹⁹ The lip of truth shall be established for ever;
But a lying tongue is but for a moment.

¹⁰ A divine sentence is in the lips of the king;
His mouth shall not transgress in judgment. ¹¹ A just balance and scales are Jehovah's;
All the weights of the bag are his work. ¹² It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness;
For the throne is established by righteousness. ¹³ Righteous lips are the delight of kings;
And they love him that speaketh right.

⁷ The legs of the lame hang loose;
So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

¹² If a ruler hearkeneth to falsehood,
All his servants are wicked.

⁵ Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

⁹ And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; let that which thou hast be thine. ¹⁰ And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found favor in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand; forasmuch as I have seen thy face, as one seeth the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me. ¹¹ Take, I pray thee, my gift that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.

¹¹ And their father Israel said unto them, If it be so now, do this: take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and myrrh, nuts, and almonds;

⁸ And thou shalt take no bribe: for a bribe blindeth them that have sight, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

¹⁹ Thou shalt not wrest justice: thou shalt not respect persons; neither shalt thou take a bribe; for a bribe doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him: and he said unto her, Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.

¹ And when David was a little past the top [of the ascent], behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and a hundred clusters of raisins, and a hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. ² And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink. ³ And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem; for he said, To-day will the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father. ⁴ Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine is all that pertaineth unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I do obeisance; let me find favor in thy sight, my lord, O king.

¹⁶ He sent from on high, he took me;
He drew me out of many waters.

⁶ His going forth is from the end of the heavens,
And his circuit unto the ends of it;
And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

¹³ Be thou exalted, O Jehovah, in thy strength:
So will we sing and praise thy power.

⁴ The voice of Jehovah is powerful;
The voice of Jehovah is full of majesty.

²³ A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom,
To pervert the ways of justice.

¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifieth anger;
And a present in the bosom, strong wrath.

²³ Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; every one loveth bribes, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.

¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins—ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate [from their right].

³ Their hands are upon that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asketh, and the judge [is ready] for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth the evil desire of his soul: thus they weave it together.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered.

¹² Hatred stirreth up strifes;
But love covereth all transgressions.

²⁸ A perverse man scattereth abroad strife;
And a whisperer separateth chief friends.

⁸ above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins:

⁵ Let the righteous smite me, [it shall be] a kindness;
And let him reprove me, [it shall be as] oil upon the head;
Let not my head refuse it:
For even in their wickedness shall my prayer continue.

⁸ Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate thee:
Reprove a wise man, and he will love thee. ⁹ Give [instruction] to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser:
Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹ A wise son [heareth] his father's instruction;
But a scoffer heareth not rebuke.

⁵ A fool despiseth his father's correction;
But he that regardeth reproof getteth prudence.

²⁵ Smite a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence;
And reprove one that hath understanding, [and] he will understand knowledge.

²² Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with bruised grain,
Yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

¹⁹ A servant will not be corrected by words;
For though he understand, he will not give heed.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

¹² And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.

⁵ And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and cursed still as he came. ⁶ And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow: ⁸ Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.
⁹ Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.

¹⁵ And ten young men that bare Joab's armor compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

¹⁹ Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that Jehovah hath avenged him of his enemies.

¹ And there happened to be there a base fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.

²² Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

²⁴ Now therefore as Jehovah liveth, who hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me a house, as he promised, surely Adonijah shall be put to death this day. ²⁵ And king Solomon sent by Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him, so that he died.

³¹ And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the blood, which Joab shed without cause, from me and from my father's house.

⁴⁶ So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out, and fell upon him, so that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

⁴¹ They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will let out the vineyard unto other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

⁷ But the king was wroth; and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

²⁷ But these mine enemies, that would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.}

⁸ Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

²⁴ And he looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of Jehovah. And there came forth two she-bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two lads of them.

³ A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty;
But a fool's vexation is heavier than they both.

¹⁵ [As] a roaring lion, and a ranging bear,
[So is] a wicked ruler over a poor people.

⁸ I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart; and there will I devour them like a lioness; the wild beast shall tear them.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the Wise-men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had exactly learned of the Wise-men.

¹⁷ And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rendered unto me good, whereas I have rendered unto thee evil.

² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. ³ And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers.

¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

¹ And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Jehovah. And Jehovah said, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put to death the Gibeonites. ² And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah); ³ and David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of Jehovah? ⁴ And the Gibeonites said unto him, It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Saul, or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you. ⁵ And they said unto the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us, [that] we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel, ⁶ let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto Jehovah in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Jehovah. And the king said, I will give them.
⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of Jehovah's oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. ⁸ But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she bare to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite: ⁹ and he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the mountain before Jehovah, and they fell [all] seven together. And they were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.
¹⁰ And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water was poured upon them from heaven; and she suffered neither the birds of the heavens to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. ¹¹ And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.
¹² And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, in the day that the Philistines slew Saul in Gilboa; ¹³ and he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son: and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged. ¹⁴ And they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was entreated for the land.

¹² They reward me evil for good,
[To] the bereaving of my soul.

²⁰ They also that render evil for good
Are adversaries unto me, because I follow the thing that is good.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me;
Then I could have borne it:
Neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me;
Then I would have hid myself from him: ¹³ But it was thou, a man mine equal,
My companion, and my familiar friend. ¹⁴ We took sweet counsel together;
We walked in the house of God with the throng. ¹⁵ Let death come suddenly upon them,
Let them go down alive into Sheol;
For wickedness is in their dwelling, in the midst of them.

⁴ For my love they are my adversaries:
But I [give myself unto] prayer. ⁵ And they have rewarded me evil for good,
And hatred for my love. ⁶ Set thou a wicked man over him;
And let an adversary stand at his right hand. ⁷ When he is judged, let him come forth guilty;
And let his prayer be turned into sin. ⁸ Let his days be few;
[And] let another take his office. ⁹ Let his children be fatherless,
And his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be vagabonds, and beg;
And let them seek [their bread] out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the extortioner catch all that he hath;
And let strangers make spoil of his labor. ¹² Let there be none to extend kindness unto him;
Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off;
In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them. ²¹ Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, [and] their young men smitten of the sword in battle.

⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.

²⁵ And all the people answered and said, His blood [be] on us, and on our children.

¹⁷ Render to no man evil for evil. Take thought for things honorable in the sight of all men.

¹⁵ See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all.

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

⁸ And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we are brethren. ⁹ Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if [thou wilt take] the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if [thou take] the right hand, then I will go to the left.

¹ And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply. ² And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? ³ God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

¹ And the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward; and they said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thy house upon thee with fire. ² And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye saved me not out of their hand. ³ And when I saw that ye saved me not, I put my life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and Jehovah delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me? ⁴ Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye are fugitives of Ephraim, ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, [and] in the midst of Manasseh. ⁵ And the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And it was so, that, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay; ⁶ then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth; and he said Sibboleth; for he could not frame to pronounce it right: then they laid hold on him, and slew him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim forty and two thousand.

¹⁴ And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. ¹⁵ Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. ¹⁶ And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. ¹⁷ And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

⁴¹ And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David's men with him?

¹⁴ and spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions. ¹⁵ So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was brought about of God, that Jehovah might establish his word, which he spake by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So all Israel departed unto their tents.

¹⁷ And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

¹⁷ Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. ¹⁸ And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle. ¹⁹ Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten Edom; and thy heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to [thy] hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
²⁰ But Amaziah would not hear; for it was of God, that he might deliver them into the hand [of their enemies], because they had sought after the gods of Edom. ²¹ So Joash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. ²² And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to his tent. ²³ And Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits. ²⁴ And [he took] all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

⁶ For Pekah the son of Remaliah slew in Judah a hundred and twenty thousand in one day, all of them valiant men; because they had forsaken Jehovah, the God of their fathers.

¹⁰ By pride cometh only contention;
But with the well-advised is wisdom.

²⁹ He that is slow to anger is of great understanding;
But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

¹ A soft answer turneth away wrath;
But a grievous word stirreth up anger.

³² He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty;
And he that ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.

¹⁹ He loveth transgression that loveth strife:
He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.

¹¹ The discretion of a man maketh him slow to anger;
And it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

³ It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife;
But every fool will be quarrelling.

⁸ Go not forth hastily to strive,
Lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof,
When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

²¹ [As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire,
So is a contentious man to inflame strife.

²² An angry man stirreth up strife,
And a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression.

⁸ Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; [and] the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. ⁹ Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

³⁹ but I say unto you, Resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any man would go to law with thee, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. ⁴¹ And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.

¹ Now in these days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian Jews against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. ² And the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not fit that we should forsake the word of God, and serve tables. ³ Look ye out therefore, brethren, from among you seven men of good report, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. ⁴ But we will continue stedfastly in prayer, and in the ministry of the word. ⁵ And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch;

² And when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and questioning with them, [the brethren] appointed that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. ³ They therefore, being brought on their way by the church, passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. ⁴ And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church and the apostles and the elders, and they rehearsed all things that God had done with them. ⁵ But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is needful to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses.
⁶ And the apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider of this matter. ⁷ And when there had been much questioning, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Brethren, ye know that a good while ago God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. ⁸ And God, who knoweth the heart, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as he did unto us; ⁹ and he made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. ¹⁰ Now therefore why make ye trial of God, that ye should put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? ¹¹ But we believe that we shall be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in like manner as they.
¹² And all the multitude kept silence; and they hearkened unto Barnabas and Paul rehearsing what signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles through them. ¹³ And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Brethren, hearken unto me: ¹⁴ Symeon hath rehearsed how first God visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. ¹⁵ And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, ¹⁶ After these things I will return,
And I will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen;
And I will build again the ruins thereof,
And I will set it up: ¹⁷ That the residue of men may seek after the Lord,
And all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, ¹⁸ Saith the Lord, who maketh these things known from of old. ¹⁹ Wherefore my judgment is, that we trouble not them that from among the Gentiles turn to God; ²⁰ but that we write unto them, that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood. ²¹ For Moses from generations of old hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath.

¹⁸ If it be possible, as much as in you lieth, be at peace with all men.

¹¹ and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you;

²³ But foolish and ignorant questionings refuse, knowing that they gender strifes. ²⁴ And the Lord's servant must not strive, but be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing,

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. ¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. ¹⁸ And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

⁷ Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

¹³ And the two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him: and the base fellows bare witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did curse God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones.

¹⁶ There are six things which Jehovah hateth;
Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:

¹ A false balance is an abomination to Jehovah;
But a just weight is his delight.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah;
But the prayer of the upright is his delight.

⁵ To respect the person of the wicked is not good,
[Nor] to turn aside the righteous in judgment.

²³ These also are [sayings] of the wise.

To have respect of persons in judgment is not good. ²⁴ He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous,
Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him;

²³ that justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

⁸ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith Jehovah. ⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

²⁷ Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, [and] to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain. ²⁸ And her prophets have daubed for them with untempered [mortar], seeing false visions, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, when Jehovah hath not spoken. ²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery; yea, they have vexed the poor and needy, and have oppressed the sojourner wrongfully.

⁷ Ye who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,

¹² Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow [there] with oxen? that ye have turned justice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood;

¹⁸ But they cried out all together, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:— ¹⁹ one who for a certain insurrection made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison. ²⁰ And Pilate spake unto them again, desiring to release Jesus; ²¹ but they shouted, saying, Crucify, crucify him. ²² And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath this man done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him and release him. ²³ But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. And their voices prevailed. ²⁴ And Pilate gave sentence that what they asked for should be done. ²⁵ And he released him that for insurrection and murder had been cast into prison, whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.

⁵ But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reckoned for righteousness.

⁶ Ye have condemned, ye have killed the righteous [one]; he doth not resist you.

²⁹ Oh that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

¹¹ But my people hearkened not to my voice;
And Israel would none of me. ¹² So I let them go after the stubbornness of their heart,
That they might walk in their own counsels. ¹³ Oh that my people would hearken unto me,
That Israel would walk in my ways!

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity?
And scoffers delight them in scoffing,
And fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof:
Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you;
I will make known my words unto you.

⁴ Unto you, O men, I call;
And my voice is to the sons of men. ⁵ O ye simple, understand prudence;
And, ye fools, be of an understanding heart.

⁴ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither:
As for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him, ⁵ Come, eat ye of my bread,
And drink of the wine which I have mingled. ⁶ Leave off, ye simple ones, and live;
And walk in the way of understanding.

⁶ A scoffer seeketh wisdom, and [findeth it] not;
But knowledge is easy unto him that hath understanding.

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge;
And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

²⁵ The desire of the sluggard killeth him;
For his hands refuse to labor. ²⁶ There is that coveteth greedily all the day long;
But the righteous giveth and withholdeth not.

²³ Buy the truth, and sell it not;
[Yea], wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

¹ Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. ² Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. ³ Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the understanding.

²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

⁴⁶ And Paul and Barnabas spake out boldly, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you. Seeing ye thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

²⁶ saying,
Go thou unto this people, and say,
By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand;
And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive: ²⁷ For this people's heart is waxed gross,
And their ears are dull of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed;
Lest, haply they should perceive with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart,
And should turn again, And I should heal them.

¹ And working together [with him] we entreat also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain

¹⁶ And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, and to return from following after thee, for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God;

³ Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

² And Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to slay thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself in the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:

¹⁷ And Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

¹⁶ And Jonathan, Saul's son, arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.

²⁶ I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan:
Very pleasant hast thou been unto me:
Thy love to me was wonderful,
Passing the love of women.

¹ And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? ² And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba, and they called him unto David; and the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. ³ And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, who is lame of his feet. ⁴ And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo-debar. ⁵ Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo-debar. ⁶ And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came unto David, and fell on his face, and did obeisance. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold, thy servant! ⁷ And David said unto him, Fear not; for I will surely show thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. ⁸ And he did obeisance, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
⁹ Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said unto him, All that pertained to Saul and to all his house have I given unto thy master's son. ¹⁰ And thou shalt till the land for him, thou, and thy sons, and thy servants; and thou shalt bring in [the fruits], that thy master's son may have bread to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. ¹¹ Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king commandeth his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, [said the king], he shall eat at my table, as one of the king's sons. ¹² And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth. ¹³ So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem; for he did eat continually at the king's table. And he was lame in both his feet.

¹⁴ For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then will relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father's house will perish: and who knoweth whether thou art not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

²⁴ He that maketh many friends [doeth it] to his own destruction;
But there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

⁷ All the brethren of the poor do hate him:
How much more do his friends go far from him!
He pursueth [them with] words, [but] they are gone.

¹³ Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. ¹⁴ Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which I command you.

¹¹ For both he that sanctifieth and they that are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

¹ My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbor,
If thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger; ² Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth,
Thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. ³ Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself,
Seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbor:
Go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbor; ⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes,
Nor slumber to thine eyelids; ⁵ Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter],
And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it;
But he that hateth suretyship is secure.

¹⁶ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger;
And hold him in pledge [that is surety] for foreigners.

¹⁶ He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [gain],
[And] he that giveth to the rich, [shall come] only to want.

²⁶ Be thou not one of them that strike hands,
[Or] of them that are sureties for debts. ²⁷ If thou hast not wherewith to pay,
Why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that Jehovah smote Nabal, so that he died.

¹ And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

⁵ Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

¹⁸ Pride [goeth] before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water:
Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty;
And before honor [goeth] humility.

²⁷ Prepare thy work without,
And make it ready for thee in the field;
And afterwards build thy house.

⁹ If a wise man hath a controversy with a foolish man,
Whether he be angry or laugh, there will be no rest.

²² An angry man stirreth up strife,
And a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression. ²³ A man's pride shall bring him low;
But he that is of a lowly spirit shall obtain honor.

¹³ Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice; that useth his neighbor's service without wages, and giveth him not his hire; ¹⁴ that saith, I will build me a wide house and spacious chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is ceiled with cedar, and painted with vermilion. ¹⁵ Shalt thou reign, because thou strivest to excel in cedar? Did not thy father eat and drink, and do justice and righteousness? then it was well with him.

²⁰ The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; ²¹ whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the birds of the heavens had their habitation:

²⁰ For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should find you not such as I would, and should myself be found of you such as ye would not; lest by any means [there should be] strife, jealousy, wraths, factions, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults;

²⁰ for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.

²⁶ With the pure thou wilt show thyself pure;
And with the perverse thou wilt show thyself froward.

³² For the perverse is an abomination to Jehovah;
But his friendship is with the upright.

¹² A worthless person, a man of iniquity,
Is he that walketh with a perverse mouth; ¹³ That winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet,
That maketh signs with his fingers; ¹⁴ In whose heart is perverseness,
Who deviseth evil continually,
Who soweth discord. ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly;
On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy.

¹³ The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil:
Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way,
And the perverse mouth, do I hate.

¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow;
But a prating fool shall fall.

¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge;
But the mouth of the foolish is a present destruction.

³¹ The mouth of the righteous bringeth forth wisdom;
But the perverse tongue shall be cut off.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention,
And his mouth calleth for stripes. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his destruction,
And his lips are the snare of his soul.

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: ⁸ but the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison.

³⁴ And when Esau was forty years old he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:

³² And thou shalt behold the affliction of [my] habitation, in all the wealth which [God] shall give Israel; and there shall not be an old man in thy house for ever. ³³ And the man of thine, [whom] I shall not cut off from mine altar, [shall be] to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thy heart; and all the increase of thy house shall die in the flower of their age. ³⁴ And this shall be the sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die both of them. ³⁵ And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

³ And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

³³ And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

¹ The proverbs of Solomon.

A wise son maketh a glad father;
But a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

²⁰ A wise son maketh a glad father;
But a foolish man despiseth his mother.

²⁵ A foolish son is a grief to his father,
And bitterness to her that bare him.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father;
And the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise,
My heart will be glad, even mine: ¹⁶ Yea, my heart will rejoice,
When thy lips speak right things.

³ And I wrote this very thing, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is [the joy] of you all.

¹⁹ I Paul write it with mine own hand, I will repay it: that I say not unto thee that thou owest to me even thine own self besides. ²⁰ Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my heart in Christ.

⁴ Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd;
And my tongue cleaveth to my jaws;
And thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away
Through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me:

³ For my days consume away like smoke,
And my bones are burned as a firebrand. ⁴ My heart is smitten like grass, and withered;
For I forget to eat my bread. ⁵ By reason of the voice of my groaning
My bones cleave to my flesh.

²⁵ Heaviness in the heart of a man maketh it stoop;
But a good word maketh it glad.

¹³ A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance;
But by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.

¹⁴ The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity;
But a broken spirit who can bear?

⁷ Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works. ⁸ Let thy garments be always white; and let not thy head lack oil. ⁹ Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of thy life of vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all thy days of vanity: for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labor wherein thou laborest under the sun.

² through whom also we have had our access by faith into this grace wherein we stand; and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. ³ And not only so, but we also rejoice in our tribulations: knowing that tribulation worketh stedfastness; ⁴ and stedfastness, approvedness; and approvedness, hope: ⁵ and hope putteth not to shame; because the love of God hath been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given unto us.

⁷ so that contrariwise ye should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his overmuch sorrow.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, [a repentance] which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

³ Here I am: witness against me before Jehovah, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.

⁸ A bribe is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it;
Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

¹⁶ A man's gift maketh room for him,
And bringeth him before great men.

¹² In thee have they taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken interest and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors by oppression, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord Jehovah.

¹¹ The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet they lean upon Jehovah, and say, Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us.

¹⁰ And Judas Iscariot, he that was one of the twelve, went away unto the chief priests, that he might deliver him unto them. ¹¹ And they, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently deliver him [unto them].

³⁷ Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity,
And quicken me in thy ways.

¹⁴ The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge;
But the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?
For [riches] certainly make themselves wings,
Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

¹⁴ The wise man's eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all.

⁹ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

¹ Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

¹⁷ If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or [whether] I speak from myself.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vainglory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

¹ And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. ² And Amnon was so vexed that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything unto her. ³ But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man. ⁴ And he said unto him, Why, O son of the king, art thou thus lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister. ⁵ And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and feign thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, Let my sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and give me bread to eat, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand. ⁶ So Amnon lay down, and feigned himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, Let my sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.
⁷ Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house, and dress him food. ⁸ So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and he was laid down. And she took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes. ⁹ And she took the pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him. ¹⁰ And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from thy hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. ¹¹ And when she had brought them near unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come, lie with me, my sister. ¹² And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly. ¹³ And I, whither shall I carry my shame? and as for thee, thou wilt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee. ¹⁴ Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.
¹⁵ Then Amnon hated her with exceeding great hatred; for the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone. ¹⁶ And she said unto him, Not so, because this great wrong in putting me forth is [worse] than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her. ¹⁷ Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her. ¹⁸ And she had a garment of divers colors upon her; for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her. ¹⁹ And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head, and went her way, crying aloud as she went.
²⁰ And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but now hold thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; take not this thing to heart. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house. ²¹ But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth. ²² And Absalom spake unto Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

¹⁸ And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

²⁵ That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that so the righteous should be as the wicked; that be far from thee: shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

²³ When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace. ²⁴ Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone? ²⁵ Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.

³⁹ And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me: Jehovah reward the evil-doer according to his wickedness.

⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow: ⁸ Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

⁷ Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants; for I swear by Jehovah, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry a man with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now.

¹⁸ [Him] that saith to a king, [Thou art] vile,
[Or] to nobles, [Ye are] wicked; ¹⁹ That respecteth not the persons of princes,
Nor regardeth the rich more than the poor;
For they all are the work of his hands.

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous,
Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

¹ Now shalt thou gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us; they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

²² And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression;
But he that refraineth his lips doeth wisely.

²⁸ The heart of the righteous studieth to answer;
But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

¹⁷ The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

¹⁹ Ye know [this], my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

¹⁸ And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

⁵ Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace!
And it would be your wisdom.

² The tongue of the wise uttereth knowledge aright;
But the mouth of fools poureth out folly.

³ For a dream cometh with a multitude of business, and a fool's voice with a multitude of words.

³ Yea also, when the fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one [that] he is a fool.

¹⁴ A fool also multiplieth words: [yet] man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?
