¹ A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son.

Jehovah, how are mine adversaries increased!
Many are they that rise up against me. ² Many there are that say of my soul,
There is no help for him in God. [Selah ³ But thou, O Jehovah, art a shield about me;
My glory and the lifter up of my head. ⁴ I cry unto Jehovah with my voice,
And he answereth me out of his holy hill. [Selah ⁵ I laid me down and slept;
I awaked; for Jehovah sustaineth me. ⁶ I will not be afraid of ten thousands of the people
That have set themselves against me round about. ⁷ Arise, O Jehovah; save me, O my God:
For thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone;
Thou hast broken the teeth of the wicked. ⁸ Salvation belongeth unto Jehovah:
Thy blessing be upon thy people. [Selah

¹ And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him. ² And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that, when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. ³ And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee. ⁴ Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice! ⁵ And it was so, that, when any man came nigh to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him. ⁶ And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
⁷ And it came to pass at the end of forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto Jehovah, in Hebron. ⁸ For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If Jehovah shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Jehovah. ⁹ And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron. ¹⁰ But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom is king in Hebron. ¹¹ And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they knew not anything. ¹² And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.
¹³ And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. ¹⁴ And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for else none of us shall escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword. ¹⁵ And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall choose. ¹⁶ And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, that were concubines, to keep the house. ¹⁷ And the king went forth, and all the people after him; and they tarried in Beth-merhak. ¹⁸ And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men that came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

¹⁵ And Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him.

¹¹ But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. ¹² So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one. ¹³ Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.

⁷ Show thy marvellous lovingkindness,
O thou that savest by thy right hand them that take refuge [in thee]
From those that rise up [against them].

²¹ And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child: and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.

²⁵ And all the people answered and said, His blood [be] on us, and on our children.

⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow: ⁸ Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

⁴ I cry unto Jehovah with my voice,
And he answereth me out of his holy hill. [Selah

⁸ Salvation belongeth unto Jehovah:
Thy blessing be upon thy people. [Selah

² O ye sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor?
[How long] will ye love vanity, and seek after falsehood? [Selah

⁴ Stand in awe, and sin not:
Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. [Selah

⁷ All they that see me laugh me to scorn:
They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, [saying],

³ My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

¹⁰ As with a sword in my bones, mine adversaries reproach me,
While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

¹¹ Saying, God hath forsaken him:
Pursue and take him; for there is none to deliver.

³ God came from Teman,
And the Holy One from mount Paran. [Selah
His glory covered the heavens,
And the earth was full of his praise.

⁹ Thy bow was made quite bare;
The oaths to the tribes were a [sure] word. [Selah
Thou didst cleave the earth with rivers.

¹³ Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people,
For the salvation of thine anointed;
Thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked man,
Laying bare the foundation even unto the neck. [Selah

⁴² He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. ⁴³ He trusteth on God; let him deliver him now, if he desireth him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

¹ After these things the word of Jehovah came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, [and] thy exceeding great reward.

¹³ within yet three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head, and restore thee unto thine office: and thou shalt give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

²⁹ Happy art thou, O Israel:
Who is like unto thee, a people saved by Jehovah,
The shield of thy help,
And the sword of thy excellency!
And thine enemies shall submit themselves unto thee;
And thou shalt tread upon their high places.

²⁷ And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison;

³ But know that Jehovah hath set apart for himself him that is godly:
Jehovah will hear when I call unto him.

² Jehovah is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
My God, my rock, in whom I will take refuge;
My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

⁶ And now shall my head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me;
And I will offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy;
I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto Jehovah.

⁷ Jehovah is my strength and my shield;
My heart hath trusted in him, and I am helped:
Therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth;
And with my song will I praise him.

⁷ With God is my salvation and my glory:
The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

¹¹ For Jehovah God is a sun and a shield:
Jehovah will give grace and glory;
No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

⁷ He will drink of the brook in the way:
Therefore will he lift up the head.

¹¹⁴ Thou art my hiding-place and my shield:
I hope in thy word.

²⁵ In Jehovah shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

¹⁹ The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but Jehovah will be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.

³² A light for revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of thy people Israel.

¹¹ having the glory of God: her light was like unto a stone most precious, as it were a jasper stone, clear as crystal:

²³ And the city hath no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine upon it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamp thereof [is] the Lamb.

⁶ Yet I have set my king
Upon my holy hill of Zion.

² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answerest not;
And in the night season, and am not silent. ³ But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. ⁴ Our fathers trusted in thee:
They trusted, and thou didst deliver them. ⁵ They cried unto thee, and were delivered:
They trusted in thee, and were not put to shame.

⁴ I sought Jehovah, and he answered me,
And delivered me from all my fears.

⁶ This poor man cried, and Jehovah heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.

³ Oh send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me:
Let them bring me unto thy holy hill,
And to thy tabernacles.

¹⁵ And call upon me in the day of trouble:
I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

¹⁷ I cried unto him with my mouth,
And he was extolled with my tongue. ¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear: ¹⁹ But verily God hath heard;
He hath attended to the voice of my prayer.

³ Be merciful unto me, O Lord;
For unto thee do I cry all the day long. ⁴ Rejoice the soul of thy servant;
For unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

¹⁵ He shall call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble:
I will deliver him, and honor him.

⁹ Exalt ye Jehovah our God,
And worship at his holy hill;
For Jehovah our God is holy.

¹ I love Jehovah, because he heareth
My voice and my supplications. ² Because he hath inclined his ear unto me,
Therefore will I call [upon him] as long as I live. ³ The cords of death compassed me,
And the pains of Sheol gat hold upon me:
I found trouble and sorrow. ⁴ Then called I upon the name of Jehovah:
O Jehovah, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.

¹ A Song of Ascents.

Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Jehovah. ² Lord, hear my voice:
Let thine ears be attentive
To the voice of my supplications.

¹³ For Jehovah hath chosen Zion;
He hath desired it for his habitation. ¹⁴ This is my resting-place for ever:
Here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

³ In the day that I called thou answeredst me,
Thou didst encourage me with strength in my soul.

¹ Maschil of David, when he was in the cave; a Prayer.

I cry with my voice unto Jehovah;
With my voice unto Jehovah do I make supplication. ² I pour out my complaint before him;
I show before him my trouble. ³ When my spirit was overwhelmed within me,
Thou knewest my path.
In the way wherein I walk
Have they hidden a snare for me.

²⁴ And it shall come to pass that, before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

¹² And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. ¹³ And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

¹³ Is any among you suffering? let him pray. Is any cheerful? let him sing praise.

⁶ And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will cause evil beasts to cease out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

¹⁸ And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope;
Yea, thou shalt search [about thee], and shalt take thy rest in safety. ¹⁹ Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid;
Yea, many shall make suit unto thee.

⁸ In peace will I both lay me down and sleep;
For thou, Jehovah, alone makest me dwell in safety.

⁹ Who holdeth our soul in life,
And suffereth not our feet to be moved.

² It is vain for you to rise up early,
To take rest late,
To eat the bread of toil;
[For] so he giveth unto his beloved sleep.

²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid:
Yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

²⁶ In the fear of Jehovah is strong confidence;
And his children shall have a place of refuge.

¹⁰ The name of Jehovah is a strong tower;
The righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

³ Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]; because he trusteth in thee.

⁶ And when Herod was about to bring him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and guards before the door kept the prison.

⁷ And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

¹⁵ And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, a host with horses and chariots was round about the city. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? ¹⁶ And he answered, Fear not; for they that are with us are more than they that are with them. ¹⁷ And Elisha prayed, and said, Jehovah, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And Jehovah opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

² The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against Jehovah, and against his anointed, [saying],

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; for thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

¹ [A Psalm] of David.

Jehovah is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
Jehovah is the strength of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid? ² When evil-doers came upon me to eat up my flesh,
[Even] mine adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell. ³ Though a host should encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear:
Though war should rise against me,
Even then will I be confident.

² Therefore will we not fear, though the earth do change,
And though the mountains be shaken into the heart of the seas

⁷ Jehovah of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. [Selah

¹⁰ All nations compassed me about:
In the name of Jehovah I will cut them off. ¹¹ They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about:
In the name of Jehovah I will cut them off. ¹² They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns:
In the name of Jehovah I will cut them off.

³¹ What then shall we say to these things? If God [is] for us, who [is] against us?

¹⁰ They have gaped upon me with their mouth;
They have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully:
They gather themselves together against me.

¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous,
And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

⁴ Return, O Jehovah, deliver my soul:
Save me for thy lovingkindness' sake.

⁶ Arise, O Jehovah, in thine anger;
Lift up thyself against the rage of mine adversaries,
And awake for me; thou hast commanded judgment.

¹² Arise, O Jehovah; O God, lift up thy hand:
Forget not the poor.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy,
Now will I arise, saith Jehovah;
I will set him in the safety he panteth for.

²³ Stir up thyself, and awake to the justice [due] unto me,
[Even] unto my cause, my God and my Lord.

²³ Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord?
Arise, cast [us] not off for ever.

⁶ Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth:
Break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Jehovah.

⁵ Even thou, O Jehovah God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Arise to visit all the nations:
Be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. [Selah

¹¹ Why drawest thou back thy hand, even thy right hand?
[Pluck it] out of thy bosom [and] consume [them].

⁹ When God arose to judgment,
To save all the meek of the earth. [Selah

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Jehovah; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Is it not thou that didst cut Rahab in pieces, that didst pierce the monster?

³⁰ Let him give his cheek to him that smiteth him; let him be filled full with reproach.

¹⁹ Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise! Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

¹¹ Jehovah will give strength unto his people;
Jehovah will bless his people with peace.

³⁹ But the salvation of the righteous is of Jehovah;
He is their stronghold in the time of trouble. ⁴⁰ And Jehovah helpeth them, and rescueth them;
He rescueth them from the wicked, and saveth them,
Because they have taken refuge in him.

¹⁷ His name shall endure for ever;
His name shall be continued as long as the sun:
And men shall be blessed in him;
All nations shall call him happy.

³¹ The horse is prepared against the day of battle;
But victory is of Jehovah.

¹¹ I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour.

²¹ Declare ye, and bring [it] forth; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath showed this from ancient time? who hath declared it of old? have not I, Jehovah? and there is no God else besides me, a just God and a Saviour; there is none besides me. ²² Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else.

²³ Truly in vain is [the help that is looked for] from the hills, the tumult on the mountains: truly in Jehovah our God is the salvation of Israel.

⁴ Yet I am Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt; and thou shalt know no god but me, and besides me there is no saviour.

⁹ But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay that which I have vowed.
Salvation is of Jehovah.

²⁶ Unto you first God, having raised up his Servant, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.

¹² And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.

³ Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly [places] in Christ:

¹⁴ saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

¹⁰ and they cry with a great voice, saying,
Salvation unto our God who sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb.

¹ After these things I heard as it were a great voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying,
Hallelujah; Salvation, and glory, and power, belong to our God:
