¹⁸ And for about forty years, he cherished them in the wilderness.

³⁶ He brought them out, after he had performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness, forty years.

³⁹ To him our fathers were not willing to be obedient; but they rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt, ⁴⁰ saying to Aaron: Make us gods that shall go be fore us; for, as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him. ⁴¹ And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. ⁴² But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: Your victims and your sacrifices did you offer to me for forty years in the wilderness, house of Israel? ⁴³ Yes, you took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your God Remphan, images which you made to worship; and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

¹ Now, brethren, I do not wish you to be ignorant, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and that all passed through the sea, ² and were all immersed into Moses, in the cloud and in the sea; ³ and did all eat the same spiritual food, ⁴ and. did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was the Christ. ⁵ But with the most of them God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. ⁶ Now these things took place as examples for us, that we should not desire evil things, as they, also, desired. ⁷ Neither be you idolaters, as some of them were, as it is written: Tho people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to engage in idolatrous sport. ⁸ Nor let us be guilty of lewdness, as some of them were guilty, and fell, in one day, twenty-three thou sand. ⁹ Nor let us tempt the Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents. ¹⁰ Nor do you murmur, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

⁷ Wherefore, as the Holy Spirit says: To-day, if you will hear his voice, ⁸ harden not your hearts, as in the bitter provocation, in the day of trial in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tried me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. ¹⁰ Where fore, I was angry with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:

¹⁶ For some, when they had heard, did bitterly provoke; yet, not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. ¹⁷ But with whom was he angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ But to whom did he swear that they should not enter into his rest, but to those who believed not? ¹⁹ And so we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
