² and when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with common, that is, with unwashed hands:

³ And why do you look at the splinter that is in your brother's eye, but perceive not the beam that is in your own eye? ⁴ Or, how will you say to your brother, Let me pull out the splinter from your eye: and lo; a beam is in your own eye? ⁵ Hypocrite! first pull the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to pull the splinter out of your brother's eye.

²³ Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, its justice, its mercy, and its faithfulness. These you ought to have done, and those you ought not to have neglected. ²⁴ Blind guides! who strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel. ²⁵ Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you make clean the outside of the cup and the plate; but within they are full of rapine and excess.

¹⁴ But Peter said: By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing common or unclean. ¹⁵ And the voice came to him again a second time: What God has cleansed, you must not call common.

²⁸ And he said to them: You know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with one of another nation, or to go into his house. But God has showed me that I must not call any man common or unclean.

⁸ But I said, By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.

¹⁴ I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself; but if any one thinks that any thing is unclean, to him it is unclean.
