¹⁹ After a long time, the lord of those servants came and settled with them.

²³ For this reason, the kingdom of heaven is likened to a king that wished to settle accounts with his servants. ²⁴ And when he began to make a settlement, there was brought to him one that owed him ten thou sand talents.

⁴⁸ But if that wicked servant shall say in his heart, My master delays his coming;

⁵ While the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

¹ And he said also to his disciples: There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and he was accused to him of wasting his goods. ² And he called him, and said to him: What is this that I hear of you? Give an account of your stewardship, for you can no longer act as steward.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day. ²⁰ And there was a certain poor man named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores: ²¹ and he would gladly have been fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. And even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the poor man died, and was carried by angels to Abra ham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried; ²³ and in hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus iii his bosom. ²⁴ And he called to him and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that, in your lifetime, you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus his evil things. But now he is comforted, and you are tormented. ²⁶ And beside all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that they that would pass hence to you, can not; nor can they that would, pass thence to us. ²⁷ Then he said, I beseech you, therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house; ²⁸ for I have five brothers; that he may earnestly admonish them, lest they also come to this place of torment. ²⁹ Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. ³⁰ But he said, Not so, Father Abraham; but if one should go to them from the dead, they would repent. ³¹ But he said to him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded, though one should rise from the dead.

⁷ For no one lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. ⁸ For if we live, we live to the Lord; or if we die, we die to the Lord. "Whether, therefore, we live or die, we are the Lord s. ⁹ For this very purpose, Christ both died and rose, and lived again, that he might have dominion over the dead and the living. ¹⁰ But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you despise your brother? For we all shall stand before the judgment-seat of the Christ. ¹¹ For it is written: As I live, says the Lord, to me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess to God. ¹² Therefore, every one of us shall give an account of himself to God.

¹² If any man builds on this foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble, ¹³ each man's work shall be made manifest; for the day shall make it manifest, for it is revealed with fire: and the fire shall try each man's work, what sort it is. ¹⁴ If any man's work abide, which he builds on this, he shall receive a reward; ¹⁵ if any man's work be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved, yet so, as through fire.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment-seat of Christ, that each may receive his reward for the things done in his body, according to what he has done, whether good or evil.

¹ My brethren, be not many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
