Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγάπη (love) ἐστίν (is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides). ¹⁷ Ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) τετελείωται (has been perfected) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (so that) παρρησίαν (confidence) ἔχωμεν (we may have) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῆς (-) κρίσεως (of judgment), ὅτι (that) καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνός (He) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐσμεν (are) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) τούτῳ (this). ¹⁸ Φόβος (Fear) οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (-) τελεία (perfect) ἀγάπη (love) ἔξω (out) βάλλει (casts) τὸν (-) φόβον (fear), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) φόβος (fear) κόλασιν (punishment) ἔχει (has); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) φοβούμενος (fearing), οὐ (not) τετελείωται (has been perfected) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love). ¹⁹ Ἡμεῖς (We) ἀγαπῶμεν (love) ὅτι (because) αὐτὸς (He) πρῶτος (first) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς (us). ²⁰ Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) εἴπῃ (should say) ὅτι (-), “Ἀγαπῶ (I love) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),” καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῇ (should hate), ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστίν (he is). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (whom) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), ὃν (whom) οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), οὐ (not) δύναται (is he able) ἀγαπᾶν (to love). ²¹ καὶ (And) ταύτην (this) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) ἔχομεν (we have) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), ἵνα (that) ὁ (the one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἀγαπᾷ (should love) καὶ (also) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹⁵ Προσέχετε (But beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) ψευδοπροφητῶν (false prophets), οἵτινες (who) ἔρχονται (come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) ἐνδύμασιν (clothing) προβάτων (of sheep); ἔσωθεν (inwardly) δέ (however) εἰσιν (they are) λύκοι (wolves) ἅρπαγες (ravenous). ¹⁶ ἀπὸ (By) τῶν (the) καρπῶν (fruits) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπιγνώσεσθε (you will know) αὐτούς (them). μήτι (Not) συλλέγουσιν (do they gather) ἀπὸ (from) ἀκανθῶν (thorns) σταφυλὰς (grapes), ἢ (or) ἀπὸ (from) τριβόλων (thistles) σῦκα (figs)?

⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Βλέπετε (Take heed), μή (lest) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) πλανήσῃ (mislead). ⁵ πολλοὶ (Many) γὰρ (for) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ),’ καὶ (and) πολλοὺς (many) πλανήσουσιν (they will mislead).

²³ Τότε (Then) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὧδε (here is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ),’ ἤ (or) ‘Ὧδε (Here),’ μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (believe it). ²⁴ ἐγερθήσονται (There will arise) γὰρ (for) ψευδόχριστοι (false Christs) καὶ (and) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets), καὶ (and) δώσουσιν (they will give) σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great), καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders), ὥστε (so as) πλανῆσαι (to mislead), εἰ (if) δυνατὸν (possible), καὶ (even) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect). ²⁵ ἰδοὺ (Behold), προείρηκα (I have foretold it) ὑμῖν (to you). ²⁶ Ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) εἴπωσιν (they say) ὑμῖν (to you), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) ἐστίν (He is),’ μὴ (not) ἐξέλθητε (go forth); Ἰδοὺ (or ‘Behold), ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ταμείοις (inner rooms),’ μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (believe it).

²¹ Καὶ (And) τότε (then) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says), ‘Ἴδε (Behold), ὧδε (here is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ)! Ἴδε (Behold), ἐκεῖ (there)!’ μὴ (not) πιστεύετε (you shall believe it).

⁵⁷ Τί (Why) δὲ (now) καὶ (even) ἀφ’ (for) ἑαυτῶν (yourselves) οὐ (not) κρίνετε (judge you) τὸ (what is) δίκαιον (right)?

⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Βλέπετε (Take heed), μὴ (lest) πλανηθῆτε (you be led astray); πολλοὶ (many) γὰρ (for) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He),’ καί (and) ‘Ὁ (The) καιρὸς (time) ἤγγικεν (is drawn near).’ μὴ (Not) πορευθῆτε (go) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτῶν (them).

¹¹ οὗτοι (These) δὲ (now) ἦσαν (were) εὐγενέστεροι (more noble) τῶν (than those) ἐν (in) Θεσσαλονίκῃ (Thessalonica), οἵτινες (who) ἐδέξαντο (received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) προθυμίας (readiness), τὸ (on the) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) ἀνακρίνοντες (examining) τὰς (the) γραφὰς (Scriptures) εἰ (if) ἔχοι (were) ταῦτα (these things) οὕτως (so).

²⁹ ἐγὼ (I) οἶδα (know) ὅτι (that) εἰσελεύσονται (will come in) μετὰ (after) τὴν (the) ἄφιξίν (departure) μου (of me) λύκοι (wolves) βαρεῖς (grievous) εἰς (among) ὑμᾶς (you), μὴ (not) φειδόμενοι (sparing) τοῦ (the) ποιμνίου (flock),

¹⁸ οἱ (-) γὰρ (For) τοιοῦτοι (such) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Χριστῷ (Christ) οὐ (not) δουλεύουσιν (serve), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (the) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) κοιλίᾳ (belly); καὶ (and) διὰ (by) τῆς (-) χρηστολογίας (smooth talk) καὶ (and) εὐλογίας (flattery) ἐξαπατῶσιν (they deceive) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) τῶν (of the) ἀκάκων (naive). ¹⁹ Ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ὑμῶν (of you) ὑπακοὴ (obedience), εἰς (to) πάντας (all) ἀφίκετο (has reached). ἐφ’ (Over) ὑμῖν (you), οὖν (therefore) χαίρω (I rejoice); θέλω (I wish) δὲ (however) ὑμᾶς (you) σοφοὺς (wise) εἶναι (to be) εἰς (to) τὸ (-) ἀγαθόν (good), ἀκεραίους (innocent) δὲ (however) εἰς (to) τὸ (-) κακόν (evil).

²⁹ Προφῆται (Prophets) δὲ (then), δύο (two) ἢ (or) τρεῖς (three) λαλείτωσαν (let speak), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄλλοι (others) διακρινέτωσαν (let discern).

²¹ πάντα (All things) δὲ (however) δοκιμάζετε (test). τὸ (To the) καλὸν (good) κατέχετε (hold fast).

¹ Τὸ (-) δὲ (But) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ῥητῶς (expressly) λέγει (states) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) ὑστέροις (later) καιροῖς (times), ἀποστήσονταί (will depart from) τινες (some) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith), προσέχοντες (giving heed) πνεύμασιν (to spirits) πλάνοις (deceitful) καὶ (and) διδασκαλίαις (teachings) δαιμονίων (of demons),

¹³ πονηροὶ (Evil) δὲ (however) ἄνθρωποι (men) καὶ (and) γόητες (imposters) προκόψουσιν (will advance) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (-) χεῖρον (worse), πλανῶντες (deceiving) καὶ (and) πλανώμενοι (being deceived).

¹ Ἐγένοντο (There were) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσονται (there will be) ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (false teachers), οἵτινες (who) παρεισάξουσιν (will stealthily introduce) αἱρέσεις (heresies) ἀπωλείας (destructive), καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀγοράσαντα (having bought) αὐτοὺς (them) δεσπότην (Master) ἀρνούμενοι (denying), ἐπάγοντες (bringing upon) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ταχινὴν (swift) ἀπώλειαν (destruction).

¹⁸ Παιδία (Little children), ἐσχάτη (the last) ὥρα (hour) ἐστίν (it is), καὶ (and) καθὼς (as) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ὅτι (that) ἀντίχριστος (antichrist) ἔρχεται (is coming), καὶ (even) νῦν (now) ἀντίχριστοι (antichrists) πολλοὶ (many) γεγόνασιν (have arisen), ὅθεν (whereby) γινώσκομεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἐσχάτη (the last) ὥρα (hour) ἐστίν (it is).

⁷ Ὅτι (For) πολλοὶ (many) πλάνοι (deceivers) ἐξῆλθον (have entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οἱ (those) μὴ (not) ὁμολογοῦντες (confessing) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐν (in) σαρκί (flesh). οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) πλάνος (deceiver) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἀντίχριστος (antichrist).

² Οἶδα (I know) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) σου (of you), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) κόπον (labor) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (endurance) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) δύνῃ (you are able) βαστάσαι (to tolerate) κακούς (evil ones). καὶ (And) ἐπείρασας (you have tested) τοὺς (those) λέγοντας (claiming) ἑαυτοὺς (to be) ἀποστόλους (apostles) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἰσίν (are), καὶ (and) εὗρες (you have found) αὐτοὺς (them) ψευδεῖς (false).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐγένετο (became) καὶ (and) ἐσκήνωσεν (dwelt) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us), καὶ (and) ἐθεασάμεθα (we beheld) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δόξαν (a glory) ὡς (as) μονογενοῦς (of an only begotten) παρὰ (from) Πατρός (the Father), πλήρης (full) χάριτος (of grace) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (truth).

¹³ ὅταν (When) δὲ (however) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ἐκεῖνος (He), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὁδηγήσει (He will guide) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν* (into) τῇ* (the) ἀληθείᾳ* (truth) πάσῃ* (all); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) λαλήσει (He will speak) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτοῦ (Himself), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅσα (whatever) ἀκούσει* (He may hear), λαλήσει (He will speak); καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἐρχόμενα (coming) ἀναγγελεῖ (He will declare) ὑμῖν (to you). ¹⁴ ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐμὲ (Me) δοξάσει (will glorify), ὅτι (for) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (that which is) ἐμοῦ (Mine) λήμψεται (He will take), καὶ (and) ἀναγγελεῖ (will disclose) ὑμῖν (to you). ¹⁵ πάντα (All things) ὅσα (whatever) ἔχει (has) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ἐμά (Mine) ἐστιν (are); διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), εἶπον (I said) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (that which is) ἐμοῦ (Mine) λαμβάνει (He will take) καὶ (and) ἀναγγελεῖ (will disclose) ὑμῖν (to you).

³ διὸ (Therefore) γνωρίζω (I make known) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) λαλῶν (speaking), λέγει (says) “Αναθεμα (Accursed is) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus),” καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) εἰπεῖν (to say), “Κυριος (Lord is) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus),” εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).

¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ὁμολογουμένως (confessedly), μέγα (great) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) εὐσεβείας (of godliness) μυστήριον (mystery): Ὃς (Who) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐδικαιώθη (was justified) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (the Spirit), ὤφθη (was seen) ἀγγέλοις (by angels), ἐκηρύχθη (was proclaimed) ἐν (among) ἔθνεσιν (the nations), ἐπιστεύθη (was believed on) ἐν (in) κόσμῳ (the world), ἀνελήμφθη (was taken up) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory).

³ καὶ (and) πᾶν (any) πνεῦμα (spirit) ὃ (that) μὴ (not) ὁμολογεῖ (confesses) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is). καὶ (And) τοῦτό (this) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (that) τοῦ (of the) ἀντιχρίστου (antichrist), ὃ (which) ἀκηκόατε (you heard) ὅτι (that) ἔρχεται (is coming), καὶ (and) νῦν (now) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐστὶν (is) ἤδη (already).

¹ Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (has been born), καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the One) γεννήσαντα (having begotten Him), ἀγαπᾷ (loves) ‹καὶ› (also) τὸν (the one) γεγεννημένον (having been begotten) ἐξ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him).

³ μή (No) τις (one) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐξαπατήσῃ (should deceive) κατὰ (in) μηδένα (not one) τρόπον (way), ὅτι (because it is) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not until) ἔλθῃ (shall have come) ἡ (the) ἀποστασία (apostasy) πρῶτον (first), καὶ (and) ἀποκαλυφθῇ (shall have been revealed) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) τῆς (-) ἀνομίας (of lawlessness), ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) τῆς (-) ἀπωλείας (of destruction), ⁴ ὁ (the one) ἀντικείμενος (opposing) καὶ (and) ὑπεραιρόμενος (exalting himself) ἐπὶ (above) πάντα (every) λεγόμενον (so-called) Θεὸν (god) ἢ (or) σέβασμα (object of worship), ὥστε (so as for) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καθίσαι (to sit down), ἀποδεικνύντα (setting forth) ἑαυτὸν (he himself) ὅτι (that) ἔστιν (is) Θεός (God). ⁵ Οὐ (Not) μνημονεύετε (do you remember) ὅτι (that), ἔτι (yet) ὢν (being) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you), ταῦτα (these things) ἔλεγον (I was saying) ὑμῖν (to you)? ⁶ καὶ (And) νῦν (now) τὸ (that which) κατέχον (is restraining), οἴδατε (you know), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ἑαυτοῦ* (his) καιρῷ (time). ⁷ τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) μυστήριον (mystery) ἤδη (already) ἐνεργεῖται (is working) τῆς (-) ἀνομίας (of lawlessness); μόνον (only there is) ὁ (the one) κατέχων (restraining it) ἄρτι (at present) ἕως (until) ἐκ (out of) μέσου (the midst) γένηται (he might be gone). ⁸ καὶ (And) τότε (then) ἀποκαλυφθήσεται (will be revealed) ὁ (the) ἄνομος (lawless one), ὃν (whom) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνελεῖ (will slay) τῷ (with the) πνεύματι (breath) τοῦ (of the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) καταργήσει (will annul) τῇ (by the) ἐπιφανείᾳ (appearing) τῆς (of the) παρουσίας (coming) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

²² Τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ψεύστης (liar), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the one) ἀρνούμενος (denying) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ)? οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἀντίχριστος (antichrist), ὁ (the one) ἀρνούμενος (denying) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) Υἱόν (Son).

²⁸ κἀγὼ (and I) δίδωμι (give) αὐτοῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); καὶ (and) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀπόλωνται (shall they perish), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) οὐχ (never) ἁρπάσει (will seize) τις (anyone) αὐτὰ (them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρός (hand) μου (of Me). ²⁹ ὁ (The) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὃ (who) δέδωκέν (has given them) μοι (to Me), πάντων (than all) μεῖζόν (greater) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) ἁρπάζειν (to seize them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father). ³⁰ ἐγὼ (I) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἕν (one) ἐσμεν (are).”

³¹ νῦν (Now) κρίσις (the judgment) ἐστὶν (is) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this); νῦν (now) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (prince) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) ἐκβληθήσεται (will be cast) ἔξω (out).

¹⁷ τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὃ (whom) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) λαβεῖν (to receive), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) θεωρεῖ (it does see) αὐτὸ (Him), οὐδὲ (nor) γινώσκει (know). ὑμεῖς (But you) γινώσκετε (know) αὐτό (Him), ὅτι (for) παρ’ (with) ὑμῖν (you) μένει (He abides), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσται (He will be). ¹⁸ Οὐκ (Not) ἀφήσω (I will leave) ὑμᾶς (you) ὀρφανούς (as orphans); ἔρχομαι (I am coming) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you). ¹⁹ ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) με (Me) οὐκέτι (no more) θεωρεῖ (sees), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) θεωρεῖτέ (see) με (Me); ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) ζῶ (live), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ζήσετε (will live). ²⁰ ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) γνώσεσθε (will know) ὑμεῖς (you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ²¹ ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) τηρῶν (keeping) αὐτὰς (them), ἐκεῖνός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me), ἀγαπηθήσεται (will be loved) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me); κἀγὼ (and I) ἀγαπήσω (will love) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἐμφανίσω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰούδας (Judas), οὐχ (not) ὁ (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), “Κύριε (Lord), καὶ (then) τί (what) γέγονεν (has occurred) ὅτι (that) ἡμῖν (to us) μέλλεις (You are about) ἐμφανίζειν (to manifest) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καὶ (and) οὐχὶ (not) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world)?” ²³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) με (Me), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) τηρήσει (he will keep), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἐλευσόμεθα (we will come), καὶ (and) μονὴν (a home) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (him) ποιησόμεθα (will make).

³⁰ Οὐκέτι (No longer) πολλὰ (much) λαλήσω (I will speak) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you); ἔρχεται (comes) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) τοῦ (of this) κόσμου (world) ἄρχων (ruler), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (he has) οὐδέν (nothing);

¹¹ περὶ (concerning) δὲ (now) κρίσεως (judgment), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (ruler) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) κέκριται (has been judged).

²³ ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) σὺ (You) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me) — ἵνα (that) ὦσιν (they may be) τετελειωμένοι (perfected) εἰς (in) ἕν (unity), ἵνα (so that) γινώσκῃ (may know) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent) καὶ (and) ἠγάπησας (loved) αὐτοὺς (them) καθὼς (even as) ἐμὲ (Me) ἠγάπησας (You loved).

¹⁰ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (is in) ὑμῖν (you), τὸ (the) μὲν (indeed) σῶμα (body is) νεκρὸν (dead) διὰ (on account of) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), τὸ (the) δὲ (however) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ζωὴ (is life) διὰ (on account of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness). ¹¹ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (of the One) ἐγείραντος (having raised up) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὁ (the One) ἐγείρας (having raised up) «ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν» (the dead) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ζωοποιήσει (will give life) καὶ (also) τὰ (to the) θνητὰ (mortal) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (on account of) τοῦ (-) ἐνοικοῦντος (dwelling) αὐτοῦ (His) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you).

³¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say) πρὸς (to) ταῦτα (these things)? εἰ (If) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God is) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), τίς (who can be) καθ’ (against) ἡμῶν (us)?

³⁷ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) πᾶσιν (all), ὑπερνικῶμεν (we more than conquer) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντος (having loved) ἡμᾶς (us).

¹² ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (now), οὐ (not) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐλάβομεν (have received), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (who is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἵνα (that) εἰδῶμεν (we may know) τὰ (the things) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) χαρισθέντα (having been granted) ἡμῖν (to us),

¹³ “Τὰ (The) βρώματα (foods) τῇ (for the) κοιλίᾳ (belly) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) κοιλία (belly) τοῖς (the) βρώμασιν (for foods),” ὁ (-) δὲ (but) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (both) ταύτην (this) καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these) καταργήσει (will destroy); τὸ (-) δὲ (and) σῶμα (the body is) οὐ (not) τῇ (-) πορνείᾳ (for sexual immorality), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (for the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) τῷ (for the) σώματι (body).

⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁶ τίς (What) δὲ (now) συνκατάθεσις (agreement) ναῷ (the temple) Θεοῦ (of God) μετὰ (with) εἰδώλων (idols)? ἡμεῖς (We) γὰρ (for) ναὸς (the temple) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐσμεν (are), ζῶντος (the living), καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (has said) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὅτι (-): “Ἐνοικήσω (I will dwell) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) ἐμπεριπατήσω* (will walk among them); καὶ (and) ἔσομαι (I will be) αὐτῶν (their) Θεός (God), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔσονταί (will be) μου (to Me) λαός (a people).”

² ἐν (in) αἷς (which) ποτε (once) περιεπατήσατε (you walked), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) ἄρχοντα (ruler) τῆς (of the) ἐξουσίας (authority) τοῦ (of the) ἀέρος (air), τοῦ (the) πνεύματος (spirit) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now) ἐνεργοῦντος (working) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) υἱοῖς (sons) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience),

¹⁷ κατοικῆσαι (for to dwell) τὸν (-) Χριστὸν (Christ) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love) ἐρριζωμένοι (being rooted) καὶ (and) τεθεμελιωμένοι (being founded),

¹⁰ Τοῦ (-) λοιποῦ (Henceforth) ἐνδυναμοῦσθε (be empowered) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κράτει (strength) τῆς (of the) ἰσχύος (might) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹² ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡμῖν (to us) ἡ (the) πάλη (wrestling) πρὸς (against) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) σάρκα (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἀρχάς (rulers), πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), πρὸς (against) τοὺς (the) κοσμοκράτορας (cosmic powers) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness) τούτου (this), πρὸς (against) τὰ (the) πνευματικὰ (spiritual forces) τῆς (-) πονηρίας (of evil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms). ¹³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἀναλάβετε (take up) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) δυνηθῆτε (you may be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to withstand) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) πονηρᾷ (evil), καὶ (and) ἅπαντα (all things) κατεργασάμενοι (having done), στῆναι (to stand).

¹³ Γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), πατέρες (fathers), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you have known) τὸν (Him who is) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning). Γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), νεανίσκοι (young men), ὅτι (because) νενικήκατε (you have overcome) τὸν (the) πονηρόν (evil one). Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), παιδία (little children), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father).

⁹ Πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐ (not) ποιεῖ (practices), ὅτι (because) σπέρμα (seed) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἁμαρτάνειν (to continue sinning), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (he has been born). ¹⁰ ἐν (Through) τούτῳ (this) φανερά (manifest) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil): πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) μὴ (not) ποιῶν (practicing) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), καὶ (and also) ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) τηρῶν (keeping) τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς (commandments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (He) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). καὶ (And) ἐν (by) τούτῳ (this) γινώσκομεν (we know) ὅτι (that) μένει (He abides) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us), ἐκ (by) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) οὗ (whom) ἡμῖν (to us) ἔδωκεν (He has given).

⁶ ἡμεῖς (We) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐσμεν (are). ὁ (The one) γινώσκων (knowing) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἀκούει (listens to) ἡμῶν (us). ὃς (He who) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), οὐκ (not) ἀκούει (listens to) ἡμῶν (us). ἐκ (By) τούτου (this) γινώσκομεν (we know) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τῆς (-) πλάνης (of falsehood).

¹³ ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) γινώσκομεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένομεν (we abide), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (He) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (from out) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) αὐτοῦ (of Him) δέδωκεν (He has given) ἡμῖν (to us).

¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐγνώκαμεν (have come to know) καὶ (and) πεπιστεύκαμεν (have come to believe) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) ἣν (that) ἔχει (has) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (as to) ἡμῖν (us). Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγάπη (love) ἐστίν (is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides).

⁴ ὅτι (For) πᾶν (everyone) τὸ (-) γεγεννημένον (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) νικᾷ (overcomes) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world); καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) νίκη (victory) ἡ (-) νικήσασα (having overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world): ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹⁹ οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐσμεν (we are), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὅλος (whole), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πονηρῷ (evil one) κεῖται (lies).

¹¹ καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐνίκησαν (have overcome) αὐτὸν (him) διὰ (by reason) τὸ (of the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), καὶ (and) διὰ (by reason of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) μαρτυρίας (testimony) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠγάπησαν (they have loved) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτῶν (of them) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death).

⁸ Καὶ (And) ἐπῄνεσεν (praised) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τὸν (the) οἰκονόμον (manager) τῆς (-) ἀδικίας (unrighteous), ὅτι (because) φρονίμως (shrewdly) ἐποίησεν (he had acted). ὅτι (For) οἱ (the) υἱοὶ (sons) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) φρονιμώτεροι (more shrewd) ὑπὲρ (than) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) τοῦ (of the) φωτὸς (light) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) γενεὰν (generation) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) εἰσιν (are).

⁶ Λέγει (Says) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὁ (The) καιρὸς (time) ὁ (-) ἐμὸς (of Me) οὔπω (not yet) πάρεστιν (is come), ὁ (-) δὲ (but) καιρὸς (the time) ὁ (-) ὑμέτερος (of you) πάντοτέ (always) ἐστιν (is) ἕτοιμος (ready). ⁷ οὐ (Not) δύναται (is able) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) μισεῖν (to hate) ὑμᾶς (you); ἐμὲ (Me) δὲ (however) μισεῖ (it hates), ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) μαρτυρῶ (bear witness) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (it) ὅτι (that) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of it) πονηρά (evil) ἐστιν (are).

²³ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) κάτω (below) ἐστέ (are); ἐγὼ (I) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) ἄνω (above) εἰμί (am). ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τούτου (this) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστέ (are), ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this).

¹⁹ εἰ (If) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἦτε (you were), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ἂν (-) τὸ (as its) ἴδιον (own) ἐφίλει (would love you); ὅτι (because) δὲ (however) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) ἐστέ (you are), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world), διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) μισεῖ (hates) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world). ²⁰ Μνημονεύετε (Remember) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said) ὑμῖν (to you): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) δοῦλος (a servant) μείζων (greater than) τοῦ (the) κυρίου (master) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ εἰ (If) ἐμὲ (Me) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted), καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) διώξουσιν (they will persecute); εἰ (if) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) ἐτήρησαν (they kept), καὶ (also) τὸν (-) ὑμέτερον (yours) τηρήσουσιν (they will keep).

¹⁶ ἐκ (Of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (they are), καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world).

³ Ἔσται (There will be) γὰρ (for) καιρὸς (a time) ὅτε (when) τῆς (-) ὑγιαινούσης (sound) διδασκαλίας (teaching) οὐκ (not) ἀνέξονται (they will endure), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (desires), ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ἐπισωρεύσουσιν (they will gather around them) διδασκάλους (teachers), κνηθόμενοι (having an itching) τὴν (-) ἀκοήν (ear),

² καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἐξακολουθήσουσιν (will follow after) αὐτῶν (their) ταῖς (-) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), δι’ (through) οὓς (whom) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) βλασφημηθήσεται (will be maligned). ³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

⁹ καὶ (And) ἐβλήθη (was thrown out) ὁ (the) δράκων (dragon) ὁ (-) μέγας (great), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὁ (who) καλούμενος (is called) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ὁ (-) πλανῶν (deceiving) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (inhabited world) ὅλην (whole). ἐβλήθη (He was thrown down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐβλήθησαν (were thrown down).

²² Πάντα (All things) μοι (to Me) παρεδόθη (have been delivered) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me). καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) γινώσκει (knows) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father); καὶ (and) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) ἐὰν (if) βούληται (might resolve) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal Him).”

¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἄλλα (other) πρόβατα (sheep) ἔχω (I have), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) αὐλῆς (fold) ταύτης (this); κἀκεῖνα (those also) δεῖ (it behooves) με (Me) ἀγαγεῖν (to bring), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούσουσιν (they will hear); καὶ (and) γενήσονται* (there will be) μία (one) ποίμνη (flock), εἷς (with one) ποιμήν (shepherd).

²⁰ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁ (the one) λαμβάνων (receiving) ἄν (-) τινα (any) πέμψω (I shall send), ἐμὲ (Me) λαμβάνει (receives); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἐμὲ (Me) λαμβάνων (receiving), λαμβάνει (receives) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me).”

²⁶ Ὅταν (When) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) Παράκλητος (Helper), ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) πέμψω (will send) ὑμῖν (to you) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὃ (who) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐκπορεύεται (goes forth), ἐκεῖνος (He) μαρτυρήσει (will bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me).

¹³ ὅταν (When) δὲ (however) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ἐκεῖνος (He), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὁδηγήσει (He will guide) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν* (into) τῇ* (the) ἀληθείᾳ* (truth) πάσῃ* (all); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) λαλήσει (He will speak) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτοῦ (Himself), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅσα (whatever) ἀκούσει* (He may hear), λαλήσει (He will speak); καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἐρχόμενα (coming) ἀναγγελεῖ (He will declare) ὑμῖν (to you).

³⁷ Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) δοκεῖ (considers) προφήτης (a prophet) εἶναι (himself to be), ἢ (or) πνευματικός (spiritual), ἐπιγινωσκέτω (let him recognize) ἃ (the things) γράφω (I write) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐστὶν (are) ἐντολή (the commands).

Παρακαλοῦμεν (We exhort) δὲ (however) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), περισσεύειν (to abound) μᾶλλον (more and more),

⁷ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἔδωκεν (has given) ἡμῖν (us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δειλίας (of cowardice), ἀλλὰ (but) δυνάμεως (of power), καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (of love), καὶ (and) σωφρονισμοῦ (of self-control).

²² Τὰς (The) ψυχὰς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡγνικότες (having purified) ἐν (by) τῇ (-) ὑπακοῇ (obedience) τῆς (to the) ἀληθείας (truth) εἰς (unto) φιλαδελφίαν (brotherly love) ἀνυπόκριτον (sincere), ἐκ (out of) [καθαρᾶς] (purity) καρδίας (of heart), ἀλλήλους (one another) ἀγαπήσατε (love) ἐκτενῶς (fervently).

¹⁰ ὁ (The one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) σκάνδαλον (cause for stumbling) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).

²⁹ Ἐὰν (If) εἰδῆτε (you know) ὅτι (that) δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (He is), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (Him) γεγέννηται (has been begotten).

¹⁰ ἐν (Through) τούτῳ (this) φανερά (manifest) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil): πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) μὴ (not) ποιῶν (practicing) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), καὶ (and also) ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him). ¹¹ Ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγγελία (message) ἣν (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), ¹² οὐ (not) καθὼς (as) Κάϊν (Cain), ἐκ (who of) τοῦ (the) πονηροῦ (evil one) ἦν (was) καὶ (and) ἔσφαξεν (slew) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) χάριν (because of) τίνος (what) ἔσφαξεν (he slayed) αὐτόν (him)? ὅτι (Because) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him) πονηρὰ (evil) ἦν (were), τὰ (those) δὲ (however) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), δίκαια (righteous). ¹³ [καὶ] (And) Μὴ (not) θαυμάζετε (be surprised), ἀδελφοί (brothers), εἰ (if) μισεῖ (hates) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world). ¹⁴ Ἡμεῖς (We) οἴδαμεν (know) ὅτι (that) μεταβεβήκαμεν (we have passed) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (death) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life), ὅτι (because) ἀγαπῶμεν (we love) τοὺς (our) ἀδελφούς (brothers). ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (death). ¹⁵ πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) μισῶν (hating) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀνθρωποκτόνος (a murderer) ἐστίν (is); καὶ (and) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (any) ἀνθρωποκτόνος (murderer), οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένουσαν (abiding). ¹⁶ Ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) ἐγνώκαμεν (we have known) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love), ὅτι (because) ἐκεῖνος (He) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔθηκεν (laid down); καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) ὀφείλομεν (ought) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (our) ἀδελφῶν (brothers), τὰς (our) ψυχὰς (lives) θεῖναι (to lay down). ¹⁷ ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ἔχῃ (might have) τὸν (the) βίον (goods) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), καὶ (and) θεωρῇ (might see) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντα (having), καὶ (and) κλείσῃ (might close up) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), πῶς (how) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him)? ¹⁸ Τεκνία (Little children), μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) λόγῳ (in word), μηδὲ (nor) τῇ (in) γλώσσῃ (tongue), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐν (in) ἔργῳ (action) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (in truth). ¹⁹ [καὶ] (And) ἐν (by) τούτῳ (this) γνωσόμεθα (we will know) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἐσμέν (we are), καὶ (and) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πείσομεν (we will assure) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), ²⁰ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) καταγινώσκῃ (should condemn us) ἡμῶν (our) ἡ (-) καρδία (heart), ὅτι (that) μείζων (greater than) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) γινώσκει (He knows) πάντα (all things). ²¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), ἐὰν (if) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us) «μὴ (not) καταγινώσκῃ» (should condemn us), παρρησίαν (confidence) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ²² καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτῶμεν (we might ask), λαμβάνομεν (we receive) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅτι (because) τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς (commandments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τηροῦμεν (we keep), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἀρεστὰ (pleasing) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) ποιοῦμεν (we do). ²³ καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἵνα (that) πιστεύσωμεν (we should believe) τῷ (in the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), καὶ (and) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), καθὼς (just as) ἔδωκεν (He gave) ἐντολὴν (the commandment) ἡμῖν (to us).

¹² Θεὸν (God) οὐδεὶς (no one) πώποτε (at any time) τεθέαται (has seen); ἐὰν (if) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) μένει (abides) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τετελειωμένη (having been perfected) «ἐν (in) ἡμῖν» (us) ἐστιν (is).

²⁰ Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) εἴπῃ (should say) ὅτι (-), “Ἀγαπῶ (I love) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),” καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῇ (should hate), ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστίν (he is). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (whom) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), ὃν (whom) οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), οὐ (not) δύναται (is he able) ἀγαπᾶν (to love).

⁵⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐὰν (If) ἐγὼ (I) δοξάσω (glorify) ἐμαυτόν (Myself), ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) μου (of Me) οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (is); ἔστιν (it is) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) δοξάζων (glorifying) με (Me), ὃν (of whom) ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (-), ‘Θεὸς (God) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐστιν (He is).’ ⁵⁵ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐγνώκατε (you have known) αὐτόν (Him), ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) οἶδα (know) αὐτόν (Him). κἂν (And if) εἴπω (I say) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I know) αὐτόν (Him), ἔσομαι (I will be) ὅμοιος (like) ὑμῖν (you), ψεύστης (a liar). ἀλλὰ (But) οἶδα (I know) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τηρῶ (I keep).

¹¹ Λοιπόν (Finally), ἀδελφοί (brothers), χαίρετε (rejoice)! καταρτίζεσθε (Be perfected), παρακαλεῖσθε (be exhorted), τὸ (be of the) αὐτὸ (same) φρονεῖτε (mind), εἰρηνεύετε (be at peace). καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (of love) καὶ (and) εἰρήνης (peace) ἔσται (will be) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you).

⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Θεὸς (God), πλούσιος (rich) ὢν (being) ἐν (in) ἐλέει (mercy), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) πολλὴν (great) ἀγάπην (love) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἣν (with which) ἠγάπησεν (He loved) ἡμᾶς (us),

²⁹ καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) ἡμῶν (of us) πῦρ (is a fire) καταναλίσκον (consuming).

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἔστιν (is) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ἀγγελία (message) ἣν (that) ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) ἀναγγέλλομεν (we preach) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) φῶς (light) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) σκοτία (darkness) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) οὐδεμία (none).

⁴ ὁ (The one) λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἔγνωκα (I have known) αὐτόν (Him),” καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς (commandments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) μὴ (not) τηρῶν (keeping), ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστίν (he is), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (him) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is).

⁹ Ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) εἶναι (to be) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῶν (hating), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is) ἕως (even until) ἄρτι (now).

⁶ πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένων (abiding), οὐχ (not) ἁμαρτάνει (sins); πᾶς (anyone) ὁ (-) ἁμαρτάνων (sinning), οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (has seen) αὐτὸν (Him), οὐδὲ (nor) ἔγνωκεν (has he known) αὐτόν (Him).

⁷ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), ὅτι (because) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (is); καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀγαπῶν (loving), ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (has been born), καὶ (and) γινώσκει (knows) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).

⁶ Ἔτι (Yet) ἕνα (one) εἶχεν (having) υἱὸν (son) ἀγαπητόν (beloved), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) αὐτὸν (him) ἔσχατον (last) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), ‘Ἐντραπήσονται (They will have respect for) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me).’

¹⁸ “Πνεῦμα (The Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord is) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμέ (Me), Οὗ (of which) εἵνεκεν (because) ἔχρισέν (He has anointed) με (Me) Εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach good news) πτωχοῖς (to the poor). Ἀπέσταλκέν (He has sent) με (Me) κηρῦξαι (to proclaim) αἰχμαλώτοις (to the captives) ἄφεσιν (deliverance), Καὶ (and) τυφλοῖς (to the blind) ἀνάβλεψιν (recovery of sight), Ἀποστεῖλαι (to send forth) τεθραυσμένους (the oppressed) ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (deliverance),

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐγένετο (became) καὶ (and) ἐσκήνωσεν (dwelt) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us), καὶ (and) ἐθεασάμεθα (we beheld) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δόξαν (a glory) ὡς (as) μονογενοῦς (of an only begotten) παρὰ (from) Πατρός (the Father), πλήρης (full) χάριτος (of grace) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (truth). ¹⁵ Ἰωάννης (John) μαρτυρεῖ (witnesses) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) κέκραγεν (he cried out), λέγων (saying), “Οὗτος (This) ἦν (was He) ὃν (of whom) εἶπον (I was saying), ‘Ὁ (The One) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (coming), ἔμπροσθέν (precedence) μου (over me) γέγονεν (has), ὅτι (because) πρῶτός (before) μου (me) ἦν (He was).’” ¹⁶ Ὅτι (For) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πληρώματος (fullness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἐλάβομεν (have received) καὶ (then) χάριν (grace) ἀντὶ (for) χάριτος (grace). ¹⁷ ὅτι (For) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) διὰ (through) Μωϋσέως (Moses) ἐδόθη (was given); ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἀλήθεια (truth) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐγένετο (came). ¹⁸ Θεὸν (God) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἑώρακεν (has seen) πώποτε (ever yet); μονογενὴς (the only begotten) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) κόλπον (bosom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐξηγήσατο (has made Him known).

¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὥστε (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (only begotten), ἔδωκεν (He gave), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (should perish), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔχῃ (should have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

¹⁸ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (on) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐ (not) κρίνεται (is judged); ὁ (the one) ‹δὲ› (but) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) ἤδη (already) κέκριται (has been judged), ὅτι (because) μὴ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) μονογενοῦς (only begotten) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²³ ἵνα (so that) πάντες (all) τιμῶσι (may honor) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), καθὼς (even as) τιμῶσι (they honor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father). ὁ (He who) μὴ (not) τιμῶν (is honoring) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), οὐ (not) τιμᾷ (is honoring) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), τὸν (the One) πέμψαντα (having sent) αὐτόν (Him).

²⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τοῦτό (This) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (that) πιστεύητε (you should believe) εἰς (in) ὃν (Him whom) ἀπέστειλεν (has sent) ἐκεῖνος (He).”

⁵¹ ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) ὁ (-) ζῶν (living), ὁ (-) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβάς (having come down); ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) φάγῃ (shall have eaten) ἐκ (of) τούτου (this) τοῦ (-) ἄρτου (bread), ζήσει (he will live) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) δὲ (also) ὃν (that) ἐγὼ (I) δώσω (will give), ἡ (the) σάρξ (flesh) μού (of Me) ἐστιν (is) ὑπὲρ (for) τῆς (the) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ζωῆς (life).”

⁵⁷ καθὼς (As) ἀπέστειλέν (sent) με (Me) ὁ (the) ζῶν (living) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (and I) ζῶ (live) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), καὶ (also) ὁ (the one) τρώγων (feeding on) με (Me), κἀκεῖνος (he also) ζήσει (will live) δι’ (because of) ἐμέ (Me).

²⁹ καὶ (And) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me), μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστιν (is); οὐκ (not) ἀφῆκέν (He has left) με (Me) μόνον (alone), ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) τὰ (the things) ἀρεστὰ (pleasing) αὐτῷ (to Him) ποιῶ (do) πάντοτε (always).”

⁴² Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ἦν (were), ἠγαπᾶτε (you would have loved) ἂν (-) ἐμέ (Me), ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθον (came forth) καὶ (and) ἥκω (am here); οὐδὲ (not even) γὰρ (for) ἀπ’ (of) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself) ἐλήλυθα (have I come), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐκεῖνός (He) με (Me) ἀπέστειλεν (sent).

¹⁰ ὁ (The) κλέπτης (thief) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἵνα (that) κλέψῃ (he might steal), καὶ (and) θύσῃ (might kill), καὶ (and) ἀπολέσῃ (might destroy). ἐγὼ (I) ἦλθον (came) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχωσιν (they may have), καὶ (and) περισσὸν (abundantly) ἔχωσιν (may have it).

²⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἀνάστασις (resurrection) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life); ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), κἂν (even if) ἀποθάνῃ (he should die), ζήσεται (he will live); ²⁶ καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ζῶν (living) καὶ (and) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (shall die), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). πιστεύεις (Believe you) τοῦτο (this)?”

⁶ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life). οὐδεὶς (No one) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) δι’ (by) ἐμοῦ (Me).

⁸ συνίστησιν (Demonstrates) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) ἀγάπην (love) εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὅτι (that) ἔτι (still) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners) ὄντων (being) ἡμῶν (of us), Χριστὸς (Christ) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἀπέθανεν (died). ⁹ Πολλῷ (Much) οὖν (therefore) μᾶλλον (more), δικαιωθέντες (having been justified) νῦν (now) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him), σωθησόμεθα (we will be saved) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὀργῆς (wrath)! ¹⁰ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for), ἐχθροὶ (enemies) ὄντες (being), κατηλλάγημεν (we were reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) θανάτου (death) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more), καταλλαγέντες (having been reconciled), σωθησόμεθα (shall we be saved) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ζωῇ (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him)!

³² ὅς (He who) γε (indeed) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) Υἱοῦ (Son) οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) πάντων (all) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτόν (Him), πῶς (how) οὐχὶ (not) καὶ (also) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ἡμῖν (us) χαρίσεται (will He grant)?

³ ἀπεθάνετε (You have died) γάρ (for), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you) κέκρυπται (has been hidden) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God). ⁴ ὅταν (When) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) φανερωθῇ (may be revealed), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν* (of you), τότε (then) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) φανερωθήσεσθε (will appear) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory).

⁵ Τίνι (To which) γὰρ (for) εἶπέν (did He say) ποτε (ever) τῶν (of the) ἀγγέλων (angels): “Υἱός (Son) μου (of me) εἶ (are) σύ (You); ἐγὼ (I) σήμερον (today) γεγέννηκά (have begotten) σε (You)?”? Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again): “Ἐγὼ (I) ἔσομαι (will be) αὐτῷ (to Him) εἰς (for) Πατέρα (a Father), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (He) ἔσται (will be) μοι (to Me) εἰς (for) Υἱόν (a Son)?”?

¹⁶ Ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) ἐγνώκαμεν (we have known) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love), ὅτι (because) ἐκεῖνος (He) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔθηκεν (laid down); καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) ὀφείλομεν (ought) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (our) ἀδελφῶν (brothers), τὰς (our) ψυχὰς (lives) θεῖναι (to lay down).

¹⁰ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love), οὐχ (not) ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) ἠγαπήκαμεν (loved) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) αὐτὸς (He) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς (us) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἱλασμὸν (as a propitiation) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony), ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔδωκεν (has given) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (His) ἐστιν (is).

¹⁶ οὐχ (Not) ὑμεῖς (you) με (Me) ἐξελέξασθε (chose), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἔθηκα (appointed) ὑμᾶς (you) ἵνα (that) ὑμεῖς (you) ὑπάγητε (should go) καὶ (and) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) καρπὸς (fruit) ὑμῶν (of you) μένῃ (should remain); ἵνα (so that) ὅ¦τι (whatever) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), δῷ (He may give) ὑμῖν (you).

²⁵ ὃν (whom) προέθετο (set forth as) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἱλαστήριον (a propitiation), διὰ (through) [τῆς] (-) πίστεως (faith) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) αἵματι (blood), εἰς (for) ἔνδειξιν (a showing forth) τῆς (of the) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) πάρεσιν (forbearance) τῶν (of the) προγεγονότων (having taken place beforehand) ἁμαρτημάτων (sins) — ²⁶ ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀνοχῇ (forbearance) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); πρὸς (for) τὴν (of) ἔνδειξιν (the showing forth) τῆς (the) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) καιρῷ (time), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) δίκαιον (just) καὶ (and) δικαιοῦντα (justifying) τὸν (the one) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus).

²⁹ ὅτι (For) οὓς (those whom) προέγνω (He foreknew), καὶ (also) προώρισεν (He predestined to be) συμμόρφους (conformed to) τῆς (the) εἰκόνος (image) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) πρωτότοκον (firstborn) ἐν (among) πολλοῖς (many) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers). ³⁰ οὓς (Those whom) δὲ (then) προώρισεν (He predestined), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐκάλεσεν (He called); καὶ (and) οὓς (whom) ἐκάλεσεν (He called), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified); οὓς (whom) δὲ (then) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδόξασεν (He glorified).

¹⁹ ὡς (how) ὅτι (that) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) κόσμον (the world) καταλλάσσων (reconciling) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself), μὴ (not) λογιζόμενος (reckoning) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) θέμενος (having put) ἐν (into) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (-) καταλλαγῆς (of reconciliation). ²⁰ Ὑπὲρ (For) Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) πρεσβεύομεν (we are ambassadors), ὡς (as though) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) παρακαλοῦντος (is beseeching) δι’ (through) ἡμῶν (us). δεόμεθα (We implore) ὑπὲρ (on behalf) Χριστοῦ (of Christ): καταλλάγητε (Be reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ²¹ τὸν (The One) μὴ (not) γνόντα (having known) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐποίησεν (He made), ἵνα (so that) ἡμεῖς (we) γενώμεθα (might become) δικαιοσύνη (the righteousness) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).

⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Θεὸς (God), πλούσιος (rich) ὢν (being) ἐν (in) ἐλέει (mercy), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) πολλὴν (great) ἀγάπην (love) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἣν (with which) ἠγάπησεν (He loved) ἡμᾶς (us), ⁵ καὶ (even) ὄντας (being) ἡμᾶς (we) νεκροὺς (dead) τοῖς (-) παραπτώμασιν (in trespasses), συνεζωοποίησεν (made us alive with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) — χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) —

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another). ⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) χρηστότης (kindness) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) φιλανθρωπία (love of mankind) ἐπεφάνη (appeared), τοῦ (of the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) τῶν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἃ (that) ἐποιήσαμεν (did) ἡμεῖς (we), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) ἔλεος (mercy), ἔσωσεν (He saved) ἡμᾶς (us) διὰ (through) λουτροῦ (the washing) παλινγενεσίας (of regeneration) καὶ (and) ἀνακαινώσεως (renewing) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy),

²⁴ ὃς (Who) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) αὐτὸς (Himself) ἀνήνεγκεν (bore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) ξύλον (tree), ἵνα (so that), ταῖς (-) ἁμαρτίαις (to sins) ἀπογενόμενοι (having been dead), τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) ζήσωμεν (we might live). “Οὗ (By whose) τῷ (-) μώλωπι (wounds) ἰάθητε (you have been healed).”

¹⁸ ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit),

¹ Ἴδετε (Behold) ποταπὴν (what) ἀγάπην (love) δέδωκεν (has given) ἡμῖν (to us) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ἵνα (that) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God) κληθῶμεν (we should be called) — καὶ (and) ἐσμέν (we are)! διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (knows) ἡμᾶς (us), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (it knew) αὐτόν (Him).

⁸ ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving), οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (has known) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ὅτι (because) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγάπη (love) ἐστίν (is). ⁹ Ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐφανερώθη (has been revealed) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us), ὅτι (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (one and only), ἀπέσταλκεν (has sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἵνα (so that) ζήσωμεν (we might live) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹⁹ Ἡμεῖς (We) ἀγαπῶμεν (love) ὅτι (because) αὐτὸς (He) πρῶτος (first) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς (us).

³² Τότε (Then) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to) αὐτὸν (him), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Δοῦλε (Servant) πονηρέ (evil), πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) ὀφειλὴν (debt) ἐκείνην (that) ἀφῆκά (I forgave) σοι (you), ἐπεὶ (because) παρεκάλεσάς (you begged) με (me). ³³ οὐκ (Not) ἔδει (did it behoove) καὶ (also) σὲ (you) ἐλεῆσαι (to have pitied) τὸν (the) σύνδουλόν (fellow servant) σου (of you), ὡς (as) κἀγὼ (also I) σὲ (you) ἠλέησα (had pitied)?’

³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said), “Ὁ (The one) ποιήσας (having shown) τὸ (-) ἔλεος (compassion) μετ’ (toward) αὐτοῦ (him).” Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πορεύου (Go) καὶ (and) σὺ (you) ποίει (do) ὁμοίως (likewise).”

³⁴ Ἐντολὴν (A commandment) καινὴν (new) δίδωμι (I give) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you should love) ἀλλήλους (one another); καθὼς (as) ἠγάπησα (I have loved) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀγαπᾶτε (should love) ἀλλήλους (one another).

¹² Αὕτη (This) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (-) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love) ἀλλήλους (one another) καθὼς (as) ἠγάπησα (I loved) ὑμᾶς (you). ¹³ μείζονα (Greater) ταύτης (than this) ἀγάπην (love) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἔχει (has), ἵνα (that) τις (one) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) θῇ (should lay down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) φίλων (friends) αὐτοῦ (of him).

⁸ Οὐ (Not) κατ’ (as) ἐπιταγὴν (a command) λέγω (do I speak), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἑτέρων (of others) σπουδῆς (earnestness), καὶ (also) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) ὑμετέρας (of your) ἀγάπης (love) γνήσιον (genuineness) δοκιμάζων (proving). ⁹ Γινώσκετε (You know) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὅτι (that) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπτώχευσεν (He became poor), πλούσιος (rich) ὤν (being), ἵνα (so that) ὑμεῖς (you) τῇ (-) ἐκείνου (through that) πτωχείᾳ (poverty) πλουτήσητε (might be enriched).

³¹ Πᾶσα (All) πικρία (bitterness), καὶ (and) θυμὸς (rage), καὶ (and) ὀργὴ (anger), καὶ (and) κραυγὴ (clamor), καὶ (and) βλασφημία (slander), ἀρθήτω (let be removed) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you), σὺν (along with) πάσῃ (all) κακίᾳ (malice).

¹³ ἀνεχόμενοι (bearing with) ἀλλήλων (each other) καὶ (and) χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) ἑαυτοῖς (each other). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) πρός (against) τινα (another) ἔχῃ (should have) μομφήν (a complaint), καθὼς (even as) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐχαρίσατο (has forgiven) ὑμῖν (you), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you).

¹⁶ Ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) ἐγνώκαμεν (we have known) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love), ὅτι (because) ἐκεῖνος (He) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔθηκεν (laid down); καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) ὀφείλομεν (ought) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (our) ἀδελφῶν (brothers), τὰς (our) ψυχὰς (lives) θεῖναι (to lay down). ¹⁷ ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ἔχῃ (might have) τὸν (the) βίον (goods) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), καὶ (and) θεωρῇ (might see) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντα (having), καὶ (and) κλείσῃ (might close up) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), πῶς (how) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him)?

²³ καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἵνα (that) πιστεύσωμεν (we should believe) τῷ (in the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), καὶ (and) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), καθὼς (just as) ἔδωκεν (He gave) ἐντολὴν (the commandment) ἡμῖν (to us).

¹⁸ Θεὸν (God) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἑώρακεν (has seen) πώποτε (ever yet); μονογενὴς (the only begotten) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) κόλπον (bosom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐξηγήσατο (has made Him known).

¹³ Νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) μένει (abide) πίστις (faith), ἐλπίς (hope), ἀγάπη (love), τὰ (the things) τρία (three) ταῦτα (these); μείζων (the greatest) δὲ (however) τούτων (of these is) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love).

¹⁷ Τῷ (To) δὲ (now) Βασιλεῖ (the King) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages), ἀφθάρτῳ (the immortal), ἀοράτῳ (invisible), μόνῳ (only) Θεῷ (God), τιμὴ (be honor) καὶ (and) δόξα (glory), εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

¹⁶ ὁ (-) μόνος (alone) ἔχων (having) ἀθανασίαν (immortality), φῶς (in light) οἰκῶν (dwelling) ἀπρόσιτον (unapproachable), ὃν (whom) εἶδεν (has seen) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἀνθρώπων (of men) οὐδὲ (nor) ἰδεῖν (to see) δύναται (is able), ᾧ (to whom be) τιμὴ (honor) καὶ (and) κράτος (dominion) αἰώνιον (eternal). ἀμήν (Amen).

²⁷ Πίστει (By faith) κατέλιπεν (he left) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt), μὴ (not) φοβηθεὶς (having feared) τὸν (the) θυμὸν (anger) τοῦ (of the) βασιλέως (king); τὸν (the) γὰρ (for) ἀόρατον (Invisible One) ὡς (as) ὁρῶν (seeing), ἐκαρτέρησεν (he persevered).

⁵ ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) τηρῇ (may keep) αὐτοῦ (His) τὸν (-) λόγον (word), ἀληθῶς (truly) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (him) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τετελείωται (has been perfected). Ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) γινώσκομεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐσμεν (we are):

¹⁷ Ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) τετελείωται (has been perfected) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (so that) παρρησίαν (confidence) ἔχωμεν (we may have) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῆς (-) κρίσεως (of judgment), ὅτι (that) καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνός (He) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐσμεν (are) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) τούτῳ (this). ¹⁸ Φόβος (Fear) οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (-) τελεία (perfect) ἀγάπη (love) ἔξω (out) βάλλει (casts) τὸν (-) φόβον (fear), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) φόβος (fear) κόλασιν (punishment) ἔχει (has); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) φοβούμενος (fearing), οὐ (not) τετελείωται (has been perfected) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love).

²⁰ Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) εἴπῃ (should say) ὅτι (-), “Ἀγαπῶ (I love) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),” καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῇ (should hate), ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστίν (he is). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (whom) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), ὃν (whom) οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), οὐ (not) δύναται (is he able) ἀγαπᾶν (to love).

²⁰ ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) γνώσεσθε (will know) ὑμεῖς (you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ²¹ ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) τηρῶν (keeping) αὐτὰς (them), ἐκεῖνός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me), ἀγαπηθήσεται (will be loved) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me); κἀγὼ (and I) ἀγαπήσω (will love) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἐμφανίσω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰούδας (Judas), οὐχ (not) ὁ (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), “Κύριε (Lord), καὶ (then) τί (what) γέγονεν (has occurred) ὅτι (that) ἡμῖν (to us) μέλλεις (You are about) ἐμφανίζειν (to manifest) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καὶ (and) οὐχὶ (not) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world)?” ²³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) με (Me), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) τηρήσει (he will keep), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἐλευσόμεθα (we will come), καὶ (and) μονὴν (a home) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (him) ποιησόμεθα (will make). ²⁴ ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me), τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) μου (of Me) οὐ (not) τηρεῖ (does keep); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὃν (that) ἀκούετε (you hear), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐμὸς (Mine), ἀλλὰ (but) τοῦ (of the) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me) Πατρός (Father). ²⁵ Ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have said) ὑμῖν (to you), παρ’ (with) ὑμῖν (you) μένων (abiding). ²⁶ ὁ (The) δὲ (however) Παράκλητος (Helper), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), ὃ (whom) πέμψει (will send) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐκεῖνος (He) ὑμᾶς (you) διδάξει (will teach) πάντα (all things) καὶ (and) ὑπομνήσει (will bring to remembrance) ὑμᾶς (of you) πάντα (all things) ἃ (that) εἶπον (have said) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐγώ (I).

⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (now) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (are) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (Spirit), εἴπερ (if indeed the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you); εἰ (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), οὗτος (he) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁰ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (is in) ὑμῖν (you), τὸ (the) μὲν (indeed) σῶμα (body is) νεκρὸν (dead) διὰ (on account of) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), τὸ (the) δὲ (however) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ζωὴ (is life) διὰ (on account of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness). ¹¹ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (of the One) ἐγείραντος (having raised up) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὁ (the One) ἐγείρας (having raised up) «ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν» (the dead) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ζωοποιήσει (will give life) καὶ (also) τὰ (to the) θνητὰ (mortal) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (on account of) τοῦ (-) ἐνοικοῦντος (dwelling) αὐτοῦ (His) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ¹² Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐσμέν (we are), οὐ (not) τῇ (to the) σαρκὶ (flesh), τοῦ (-) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆν (to live). ¹³ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆτε (you live), μέλλετε (you are about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die); εἰ (if) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (by the Spirit) τὰς (the) πράξεις (deeds) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) θανατοῦτε (you put to death), ζήσεσθε (you will live). ¹⁴ ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) ἄγονται (are led), οὗτοι (these) υἱοί (sons) εἰσιν (are) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δουλείας (of bondage) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) υἱοθεσίας (of divine adoption as sons), ἐν (by) ᾧ (whom) κράζομεν (we cry), “Ἀββᾶ (Abba)! ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father)!” ¹⁶ αὐτὸ (Himself) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) συμμαρτυρεῖ (bears witness with) τῷ (the) πνεύματι (spirit) ἡμῶν (of us) ὅτι (that) ἐσμὲν (we are) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁷ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τέκνα (children), καὶ (also) κληρονόμοι (heirs), κληρονόμοι (heirs) μὲν (indeed) Θεοῦ (of God), συνκληρονόμοι (joint-heirs) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἴπερ (if indeed) συμπάσχομεν (we suffer with Him), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) συνδοξασθῶμεν (we may be glorified together).

¹⁶ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ναὸς (temple) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστε (you yourselves are), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) «ἐν (in) ὑμῖν» (you) οἰκεῖ (dwells)? ¹⁷ εἴ (If) τις (anyone) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) φθείρει (destroys), φθερεῖ (will destroy) τοῦτον (him) ὁ (-) Θεός (God); ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) ναὸς (the temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἅγιός (holy) ἐστιν (is), οἵτινές (which) ἐστε (are) ὑμεῖς (you).

¹⁹ ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) ὑμῶν (of you) ναὸς (a temple) τοῦ (of the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is), οὗ (whom) ἔχετε (you have) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God)? καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ἑαυτῶν (your own),

²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) ἀγάπη (love), χαρά (joy), εἰρήνη (peace), μακροθυμία (patience), χρηστότης (kindness), ἀγαθωσύνη (goodness), πίστις (faithfulness), ²³ πραΰτης (gentleness), ἐγκράτεια (self-control); κατὰ (against) τῶν (things) τοιούτων (such), οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law). ²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires). ²⁵ Εἰ (If) ζῶμεν (we live) Πνεύματι (by the Spirit), Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) καὶ (also) στοιχῶμεν (we should walk).

²⁰ ἐποικοδομηθέντες (having been built) ἐπὶ (upon) τῷ (the) θεμελίῳ (foundation) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) καὶ (and) προφητῶν (prophets), ὄντος (being) ἀκρογωνιαίου (the cornerstone) αὐτοῦ (Himself) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ²¹ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) πᾶσα (the whole) οἰκοδομὴ (building), συναρμολογουμένη (being fitted together), αὔξει (is increasing) εἰς (into) ναὸν (a temple), ἅγιον (holy) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), ²² ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) συνοικοδομεῖσθε (are being built together) εἰς (for) κατοικητήριον (a habitation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit).

¹⁵ Ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) ὁμολογήσῃ (shall confess) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (he) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐγνώκαμεν (have come to know) καὶ (and) πεπιστεύκαμεν (have come to believe) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) ἣν (that) ἔχει (has) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (as to) ἡμῖν (us). Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγάπη (love) ἐστίν (is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides).

²⁹ Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) βλέπει (he sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) αἴρων (taking away) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).

¹¹ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) ὃ (what) οἴδαμεν (we know) λαλοῦμεν (we speak), καὶ (and) ὃ (what) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) μαρτυροῦμεν (we bear witness to); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (witness) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐ (not) λαμβάνετε (you people receive).

¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὥστε (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (only begotten), ἔδωκεν (He gave), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (should perish), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔχῃ (should have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal). ¹⁷ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (-) Υἱὸν (His Son) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἵνα (that) κρίνῃ (He might judge) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) σωθῇ (might be saved) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him).

³² ὃ (What) ἑώρακεν (He has seen) καὶ (and) ἤκουσεν (heard), τοῦτο (this) μαρτυρεῖ (He testifies); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) αὐτοῦ (of Him), οὐδεὶς (no one) λαμβάνει (receives).

³⁴ ὃν (He whom) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) λαλεῖ (speaks), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (by) μέτρου (measure) δίδωσιν (He gives) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit).

⁴² τῇ (-) τε (and) γυναικὶ (to the woman) ἔλεγον (they were saying) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκέτι (No longer) διὰ (because of) τὴν (-) σὴν (your) λαλιὰν (speech) πιστεύομεν (we believe); αὐτοὶ (we ourselves) γὰρ (for) ἀκηκόαμεν (have heard), καὶ (and) οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθῶς (truly) ὁ (the) Σωτὴρ (Savior) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).”

³⁶ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἔχω (have) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) μείζω (greater than) τοῦ (that) Ἰωάννου (of John). τὰ (-) γὰρ (For) ἔργα (the works) ἃ (that) δέδωκέν (has given) μοι (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἵνα (that) τελειώσω (I should complete) αὐτά (them), αὐτὰ (same) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἃ (which) ποιῶ (I do), μαρτυρεῖ (bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) με (Me) ἀπέσταλκεν (has sent). ³⁷ καὶ (And) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me), Πατὴρ (the Father) ἐκεῖνος (Himself), μεμαρτύρηκεν (has borne witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me). οὔτε (Neither) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πώποτε (at any time) ἀκηκόατε (have You heard), οὔτε (nor) εἶδος (form) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἑωράκατε (have you seen).

³⁹ Ἐραυνᾶτε (You diligently search) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures), ὅτι (for) ὑμεῖς (you) δοκεῖτε (think) ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔχειν (to have); καὶ (and) ἐκεῖναί (these) εἰσιν (are they) αἱ (-) μαρτυροῦσαι (bearing witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me);

³⁶ ὃν (of Him whom) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἡγίασεν (sanctified) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (do say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλασφημεῖς (You blaspheme),’ ὅτι (because) εἶπον (I said), ‘Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰμι (I am)’?

⁴⁷ Καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τίς (anyone) μου (of Me) ἀκούσῃ (hears) τῶν (the) ῥημάτων (words) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φυλάξῃ (keeps them), ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κρίνω (do judge) αὐτόν (him), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἦλθον (I came) ἵνα (that) κρίνω (I might judge) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) σώσω (I might save) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

²⁶ Ὅταν (When) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) Παράκλητος (Helper), ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) πέμψω (will send) ὑμῖν (to you) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὃ (who) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐκπορεύεται (goes forth), ἐκεῖνος (He) μαρτυρήσει (will bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me). ²⁷ καὶ (Also) ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) μαρτυρεῖτε (bear witness), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστε (you are).

⁵ Ὡς (When) δὲ (now) κατῆλθον (came down) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Μακεδονίας (Macedonia) ὅ (-) τε (both) Σιλᾶς (Silas) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Τιμόθεος (Timothy), συνείχετο (was occupied) τῷ (with the) λόγῳ (word) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), διαμαρτυρόμενος (earnestly testifying) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) εἶναι (to be) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

¹ Τεκνία (Little children) μου (of me), ταῦτα (these things) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἁμάρτητε (you might sin). καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ἁμάρτῃ (should sin), Παράκλητον (an advocate) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (with) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) δίκαιον (the Righteous One). ² καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἱλασμός (the propitiation) ἐστιν (is) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us); οὐ (not) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἡμετέρων (of ours) δὲ (and) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) περὶ (for) ὅλου (all) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world).

⁹ Εἰ (If) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) λαμβάνομεν (we receive), ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μείζων (greater) ἐστίν (is). ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὅτι (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (He has testified) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

³² Πᾶς (Everyone) οὖν (therefore) ὅστις (who) ὁμολογήσει (will confess) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ὁμολογήσω (will confess) κἀγὼ (also I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

⁸ Λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), πᾶς (everyone) ὃς (who) ἂν (-) ὁμολογήσῃ (will confess) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (the) ἀνθρώπων (men), καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ὁμολογήσει (will confess) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God);

⁹ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) ὁμολογήσῃς (you confess) ἐν (with) τῷ (the) στόματί (mouth) σου (of you), “Κύριον (The Lord is) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus),” καὶ (and) πιστεύσῃς (believe) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) αὐτὸν (Him) ἤγειρεν (raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), σωθήσῃ (you will be saved).

¹¹ καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) γλῶσσα (tongue) ἐξομολογήσηται (should confess) ὅτι (that) ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (is Lord) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus) ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) Θεοῦ (of God) Πατρός (the Father).

² Ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) γινώσκετε (you know) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God): πᾶν (Every) πνεῦμα (spirit) ὃ (that) ὁμολογεῖ (confesses) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) ἐληλυθότα (having come), ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (is);

⁵ Τίς (Who) ‹δέ› (now) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) νικῶν (overcoming) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)?

⁶⁹ καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) πεπιστεύκαμεν (have believed) καὶ (and) ἐγνώκαμεν (have known) ὅτι (that) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Ἅγιος (Holy One) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

⁹ ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἃ (What) ὀφθαλμὸς (eye) οὐκ (not) εἶδεν (has seen), καὶ (and) οὖς (ear) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσεν (has heard), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (into) καρδίαν (heart) ἀνθρώπου (of man) οὐκ (not) ἀνέβη (has entered), ὅσα (what) ἡτοίμασεν (has prepared) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τοῖς (for those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) αὐτόν (Him).”

⁸ ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving), οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (has known) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ὅτι (because) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγάπη (love) ἐστίν (is). ⁹ Ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐφανερώθη (has been revealed) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us), ὅτι (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (one and only), ἀπέσταλκεν (has sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἵνα (so that) ζήσωμεν (we might live) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹⁰ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love), οὐχ (not) ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) ἠγαπήκαμεν (loved) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) αὐτὸς (He) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς (us) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἱλασμὸν (as a propitiation) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹² Θεὸν (God) οὐδεὶς (no one) πώποτε (at any time) τεθέαται (has seen); ἐὰν (if) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) μένει (abides) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τετελειωμένη (having been perfected) «ἐν (in) ἡμῖν» (us) ἐστιν (is). ¹³ ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) γινώσκομεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένομεν (we abide), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (He) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (from out) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) αὐτοῦ (of Him) δέδωκεν (He has given) ἡμῖν (to us).

¹⁵ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀνεκτότερον (More tolerable) ἔσται (it will be) γῇ (for the land) Σοδόμων (of Sodom) καὶ (and) Γομόρρων (of Gomorrah) ἐν (on) ἡμέρᾳ (day) κρίσεως (of judgment), ἢ (than) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ἐκείνῃ (for that).

²⁵ ἀρκετὸν (It is sufficient) τῷ (for the) μαθητῇ (disciple) ἵνα (that) γένηται (he become) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him). εἰ (If) τὸν (the) οἰκοδεσπότην (master of the house) Βεελζεβοὺλ (Beelzebul) ἐπεκάλεσαν (they called), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τοὺς (those) οἰκιακοὺς (house members) αὐτοῦ (of him)!

²² πλὴν (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), Τύρῳ (for Tyre) καὶ (and) Σιδῶνι (Sidon) ἀνεκτότερον (more tolerable) ἔσται (will it be) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) ἢ (than) ὑμῖν (for you).

²⁴ πλὴν (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) γῇ (for the land) Σοδόμων (of Sodom) ἀνεκτότερον (more tolerable) ἔσται (will it be) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (day) κρίσεως (of judgment) ἢ (than) σοί (for you).”

³⁶ λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (every) ῥῆμα (word) ἀργὸν (careless) ὃ (that) λαλήσουσιν (will speak) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men), ἀποδώσουσιν (they will give) περὶ (of) αὐτοῦ (it) λόγον (an account) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (day) κρίσεως (of judgment).

²⁰ Μνημονεύετε (Remember) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said) ὑμῖν (to you): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) δοῦλος (a servant) μείζων (greater than) τοῦ (the) κυρίου (master) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ εἰ (If) ἐμὲ (Me) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted), καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) διώξουσιν (they will persecute); εἰ (if) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) ἐτήρησαν (they kept), καὶ (also) τὸν (-) ὑμέτερον (yours) τηρήσουσιν (they will keep).

²⁹ ὅτι (For) οὓς (those whom) προέγνω (He foreknew), καὶ (also) προώρισεν (He predestined to be) συμμόρφους (conformed to) τῆς (the) εἰκόνος (image) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) πρωτότοκον (firstborn) ἐν (among) πολλοῖς (many) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers).

² ἀφορῶντες (looking) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τῆς (of our) πίστεως (faith) ἀρχηγὸν (founder) καὶ (and) τελειωτὴν (perfecter), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃς (who) ἀντὶ (in view of) τῆς (the) προκειμένης (lying before) αὐτῷ (Him) χαρᾶς (joy), ὑπέμεινεν (endured) σταυρὸν (the cross), αἰσχύνης (its shame) καταφρονήσας (having despised), ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (right hand) τε (and) τοῦ (of the) θρόνου (throne) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) κεκάθικεν (sat down). ³ ἀναλογίσασθε (Consider fully) γὰρ (for), τὸν (the One) τοιαύτην (such great) ὑπομεμενηκότα (having endured) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners) εἰς (against) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἀντιλογίαν (hostility), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) κάμητε (you shall grow weary), ταῖς (in the) ψυχαῖς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐκλυόμενοι (fainting).

¹³ ἡ (-) γὰρ (For) κρίσις (judgment) ἀνέλεος (without mercy will be) τῷ (to the one) μὴ (not) ποιήσαντι (having shown) ἔλεος (mercy). κατακαυχᾶται (Triumphs over) ἔλεος (mercy) κρίσεως (judgment).

²² βλέπεις (You see) ὅτι (that) ἡ (his) πίστις (faith) συνήργει (was working with) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐκ (by) τῶν (his) ἔργων (works), ἡ (his) πίστις (faith) ἐτελειώθη (was perfected).

¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life). ¹⁷ κρεῖττον (It is better) γὰρ (for) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good) εἰ (if) θέλοι (wills it) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πάσχειν (to suffer), ἢ (than) κακοποιοῦντας (doing evil), ¹⁸ ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit),

¹ Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time). ³ ἀρκετὸς (Is sufficient) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) παρεληλυθὼς (past) χρόνος (time) τὸ (the) βούλημα (desire) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατειργάσθαι (to have carried out), πεπορευμένους (having walked) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts), οἰνοφλυγίαις (drunkenness), κώμοις (orgies), πότοις (carousing), καὶ (and) ἀθεμίτοις (abominable) εἰδωλολατρίαις (idolatries).

¹³ ἀλλὰ (But) καθὸ (as) κοινωνεῖτε (you have shared) τοῖς (in the) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) παθήμασιν (sufferings), χαίρετε (rejoice), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀποκαλύψει (revelation) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), χαρῆτε (you may rejoice) ἀγαλλιώμενοι (exulting). ¹⁴ Εἰ (If) ὀνειδίζεσθε (you are insulted) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), μακάριοι (you are blessed), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀναπαύεται (rests).

⁹ οἶδεν (then knows) Κύριος (the Lord) εὐσεβεῖς (the devout) ἐκ (out of) πειρασμοῦ (temptation) ῥύεσθαι (to deliver); ἀδίκους (the unrighteous) δὲ (then) εἰς (unto) ἡμέραν (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) κολαζομένους (being punished) τηρεῖν (to keep);

⁷ οἱ (-) δὲ (But) νῦν (now) οὐρανοὶ (the heavens) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth), τῷ (by the) αὐτῷ (same) λόγῳ (word) τεθησαυρισμένοι (having been stored up) εἰσὶν (exist), πυρὶ (for fire) τηρούμενοι (being kept) εἰς (unto) ἡμέραν (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) καὶ (and) ἀπωλείας (destruction) τῶν (-) ἀσεβῶν (of ungodly) ἀνθρώπων (men).

²⁸ Καὶ (And) νῦν (now), τεκνία (little children), μένετε (abide) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἵνα (so that) ἐὰν (when) φανερωθῇ (He appears) σχῶμεν (we might have) παρρησίαν (boldness) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) αἰσχυνθῶμεν (be ashamed) ἀπ’ (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

³ καὶ (And) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) ἐλπίδα (hope) ταύτην (this) ἐπ’ (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἁγνίζει (purifies) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (He) ἁγνός (pure) ἐστιν (is).

¹⁹ [καὶ] (And) ἐν (by) τούτῳ (this) γνωσόμεθα (we will know) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἐσμέν (we are), καὶ (and) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πείσομεν (we will assure) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), ²⁰ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) καταγινώσκῃ (should condemn us) ἡμῶν (our) ἡ (-) καρδία (heart), ὅτι (that) μείζων (greater than) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) γινώσκει (He knows) πάντα (all things). ²¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), ἐὰν (if) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us) «μὴ (not) καταγινώσκῃ» (should condemn us), παρρησίαν (confidence) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),

⁷⁴ ἀφόβως (without fear), ἐκ (from) χειρὸς (the hand) ἐχθρῶν (of our enemies) ῥυσθέντας (having been saved), λατρεύειν (to serve) αὐτῷ (Him), ⁷⁵ ἐν (in) ὁσιότητι (holiness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἡμῶν (of our life).

¹⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δουλείας (of bondage) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) υἱοθεσίας (of divine adoption as sons), ἐν (by) ᾧ (whom) κράζομεν (we cry), “Ἀββᾶ (Abba)! ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father)!”

²⁸ Διὸ (Therefore) βασιλείαν (a kingdom) ἀσάλευτον (not to be shaken) παραλαμβάνοντες (receiving), ἔχωμεν (we may have) χάριν (grace), δι’ (by) ἧς (which) λατρεύωμεν (we may serve) εὐαρέστως (well pleasingly) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), μετὰ (with) εὐλαβείας (reverence) καὶ (and) δέους (awe).

¹⁹ σὺ (You) πιστεύεις (believe) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). καλῶς (Well) ποιεῖς (you are doing)! καὶ (Even) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons) πιστεύουσιν (believe that), καὶ (and) φρίσσουσιν (shudder)!

⁴⁷ οὗ (This) χάριν (therefore) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἀφέωνται (have been forgiven) αἱ (the) ἁμαρτίαι (sins) αὐτῆς (of her) αἱ (-) πολλαί (many), ὅτι (for) ἠγάπησεν (she loved) πολύ (much); ᾧ (to whom) δὲ (however) ὀλίγον (little) ἀφίεται (is forgiven), ὀλίγον (little) ἀγαπᾷ (he loves).”

¹⁴ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) συνέχει (compels) ἡμᾶς (us), κρίναντας (having concluded) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) εἷς (One) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (has died), ἄρα (therefore) οἱ (-) πάντες (all) ἀπέθανον (have died). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (He died), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) ζῶντες (living), μηκέτι (no longer) ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ζῶσιν (should live), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (to the One) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποθανόντι (having died) καὶ (and) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised again).

³ ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἀνεστράφημέν (lived) ποτε (once) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us), ποιοῦντες (doing) τὰ (the) θελήματα (things willed) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) τῶν (of its) διανοιῶν (thoughts); καὶ (and) ἤμεθα (we were) τέκνα (children), φύσει (by nature), ὀργῆς (of wrath), ὡς (as) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λοιποί (rest).

⁸ ὃν (whom) οὐκ (not) ἰδόντες (having seen) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love), εἰς (on) ὃν (whom) ἄρτι (now though) μὴ (not) ὁρῶντες (seeing) πιστεύοντες (believing) δὲ (now) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (you exult) χαρᾷ (with joy) ἀνεκλαλήτῳ (inexpressible) καὶ (and) δεδοξασμένῃ (filled with glory),

⁶ Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say) ὅτι (that) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) ἔχομεν (we have) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and yet) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σκότει (darkness) περιπατῶμεν (should walk), ψευδόμεθα (we lie) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) ποιοῦμεν (do practice) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth).

¹¹ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) μισῶν (hating) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) περιπατεῖ (walks); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (does he know) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹⁷ ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ἔχῃ (might have) τὸν (the) βίον (goods) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), καὶ (and) θεωρῇ (might see) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντα (having), καὶ (and) κλείσῃ (might close up) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), πῶς (how) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him)?

⁴³ Ἠκούσατε (You have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said), ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (-) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) καὶ (and) μισήσεις (shall hate) τὸν (-) ἐχθρόν (enemy) σου (of you).’

³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (soul) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) διανοίᾳ (mind) σου (of you).’ ³⁸ αὕτη (This) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μεγάλη (great) καὶ (and) πρώτη (first) ἐντολή (commandment). ³⁹ δευτέρα (The second) ‹δὲ› (also) ὁμοία (is like) αὐτῇ (it): ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’

²⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὅτι (The) Πρώτη (foremost) ἐστίν (is), ‘Ἄκουε (Hear this) Ἰσραήλ (O Israel): Κύριος (The Lord) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἡμῶν (of us), Κύριος (the Lord) εἷς (One) ἐστιν (is), ³⁰ καὶ (and) ἀγαπήσεις (you shall love) Κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) ψυχῆς (soul) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) διανοίας (mind) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) ἰσχύος (strength) σου (of you).’ ³¹ δευτέρα (The second) αὕτη (this): ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’ μείζων (Greater) τούτων (than these) ἄλλη (another) ἐντολὴ (commandment) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).” ³² Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (the) γραμματεύς (scribe), “Καλῶς (Right), Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ἐπ’ (according to) ἀληθείας (truth) εἶπες (You have spoken) ὅτι (that) εἷς (One) ἐστιν (He is), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἄλλος (another) πλὴν (besides) αὐτοῦ (Him), ³³ καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἀγαπᾶν (to love) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) καὶ (and) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) συνέσεως (understanding) καὶ (and) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) ἰσχύος (strength), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἀγαπᾶν (to love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) ὡς (as) ἑαυτὸν (oneself) περισσότερόν (more important) ἐστιν (is) πάντων (than all) τῶν (the) ὁλοκαυτωμάτων (burnt offerings) καὶ (and) θυσιῶν (sacrifices).”

³⁴ Ἐντολὴν (A commandment) καινὴν (new) δίδωμι (I give) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you should love) ἀλλήλους (one another); καθὼς (as) ἠγάπησα (I have loved) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀγαπᾶτε (should love) ἀλλήλους (one another). ³⁵ ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) γνώσονται (will know) πάντες (all) ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples) ἐστε (you are), ἐὰν (if) ἀγάπην (love) ἔχητε (you have) ἐν (among) ἀλλήλοις (one another).”

⁹ Ἡ (Let) ἀγάπη (love be) ἀνυπόκριτος (unfeigned): ἀποστυγοῦντες (abhorring) τὸ (-) πονηρόν (evil), κολλώμενοι (cleaving to) τῷ (-) ἀγαθῷ (good), ¹⁰ τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (in brotherly love) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) φιλόστοργοι (devoted) τῇ (-) τιμῇ (in honor), ἀλλήλους (one another) προηγούμενοι (esteeming),

⁹ τὸ (-) γάρ (For), “Οὐ (Not) μοιχεύσεις (you shall commit adultery),” “Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (you shall murder),” “Οὐ (Not) κλέψεις (you shall steal),” “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet),” καὶ (and) εἴ (if) τις (any) ἑτέρα (other) ἐντολή (commandment), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τούτῳ (this) ἀνακεφαλαιοῦται (it is summed up), ἐν (in) τῷ (the saying): “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).” ¹⁰ ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) τῷ (to the) πλησίον (neighbor) κακὸν (evil) οὐκ (not) ἐργάζεται (does do); πλήρωμα (the fulfillment) οὖν (therefore) νόμου (of the law) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love is).

⁶ ἐν (In) γὰρ (for) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), οὔτε (neither) περιτομή (circumcision) τι (any) ἰσχύει (has power), οὔτε (nor) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision); ἀλλὰ (but only) πίστις (faith) δι’ (through) ἀγάπης (love) ἐνεργουμένη (working).

¹⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) πᾶς (the entire) νόμος (Law) ἐν (in) ἑνὶ (one) λόγῳ (word) πεπλήρωται (is fulfilled) ἐν (in) τῷ (this): “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).”

⁹ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῆς (-) φιλαδελφίας (brotherly love), οὐ (no) χρείαν (need) ἔχετε (you have for me) γράφειν (to write) ὑμῖν (to you), αὐτοὶ (yourselves) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you) θεοδίδακτοί (taught by God) ἐστε (are), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) ἀγαπᾶν (to love) ἀλλήλους (one another).

⁸ πρὸ (above) πάντων (all things), τὴν (-) εἰς (among) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἀγάπην (love) ἐκτενῆ (fervent) ἔχοντες (having), ὅτι (because) ἀγάπη (love) καλύπτει (covers over) πλῆθος (a multitude) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins),

¹¹ Ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγγελία (message) ἣν (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another),

¹⁴ Ἡμεῖς (We) οἴδαμεν (know) ὅτι (that) μεταβεβήκαμεν (we have passed) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (death) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life), ὅτι (because) ἀγαπῶμεν (we love) τοὺς (our) ἀδελφούς (brothers). ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (death).

¹⁸ Τεκνία (Little children), μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) λόγῳ (in word), μηδὲ (nor) τῇ (in) γλώσσῃ (tongue), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐν (in) ἔργῳ (action) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (in truth).
