²⁶ Ὅταν (When) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) Παράκλητος (Helper), ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) πέμψω (will send) ὑμῖν (to you) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth), ὃ (who) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐκπορεύεται (goes forth), ἐκεῖνος (He) μαρτυρήσει (will bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me). ²⁷ καὶ (Also) ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) μαρτυρεῖτε (bear witness), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστε (you are).

²² ἀρξάμενος (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) βαπτίσματος (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John) ἕως (until) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἧς (in which) ἀνελήμφθη (He was taken up) ἀφ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us), μάρτυρα (a witness) τῆς (of the) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) αὐτοῦ (of Him) σὺν (with) ἡμῖν (us) γενέσθαι (to become) ἕνα (one) τούτων (of these).”

³² Τοῦτον (This) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀνέστησεν (has raised up) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), οὗ (whereof) πάντες (all) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐσμεν (are) μάρτυρες (witnesses).

¹⁵ τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἀρχηγὸν (the Author) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) ἀπεκτείνατε (you killed), ὃν (whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἤγειρεν (has raised up) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), οὗ (whereof) ἡμεῖς (we) μάρτυρές (witnesses) ἐσμεν (are).

³⁰ ὁ (The) Θεὸς (God) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us) ἤγειρεν (raised up) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you) διεχειρίσασθε (killed), κρεμάσαντες (having hanged Him) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree). ³¹ τοῦτον (Him) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Ἀρχηγὸν (as Prince) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρα (Savior) ὕψωσεν (exalted) τῇ (by the) δεξιᾷ (right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) μετάνοιαν (repentance) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel) καὶ (and) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins). ³² καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐσμεν (are) μάρτυρες (witnesses) τῶν (of the) ῥημάτων (things) τούτων (these), καὶ (and also) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), ὃ (whom) ἔδωκεν (has given) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τοῖς (to those) πειθαρχοῦσιν (obeying) αὐτῷ (Him).”

³⁹ Καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) μάρτυρες (are witnesses) πάντων (of all things) ὧν (that) ἐποίησεν (He did) ἔν (in) τε (both) τῇ (the) χώρᾳ (region) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) καὶ (and) [ἐν] (in) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ὃν (whom) καὶ (also) ἀνεῖλαν (they put to death), κρεμάσαντες (having hanged Him) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree). ⁴⁰ τοῦτον (This One) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἤγειρεν (raised up) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day), καὶ (and) ἔδωκεν (gave) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐμφανῆ (manifest) γενέσθαι (to become), ⁴¹ οὐ (not) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ἀλλὰ (but) μάρτυσιν (to the witnesses) τοῖς (-) προκεχειροτονημένοις (having been chosen beforehand) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἡμῖν (to us) οἵτινες (who) συνεφάγομεν (did eat with) καὶ (and) συνεπίομεν (drink with) αὐτῷ (Him) μετὰ (after) τὸ (-) ἀναστῆναι (rising) αὐτὸν (His) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).

³⁰ ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐποίησαν (they did), ἀποστείλαντες (having sent it) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πρεσβυτέρους (elders) διὰ (by the) χειρὸς (hand) Βαρνάβα (of Barnabas) καὶ (and) Σαύλου (Saul).

²³ Χειροτονήσαντες (Having chosen) δὲ (now) αὐτοῖς (for them) κατ’ (in every) ἐκκλησίαν (church) πρεσβυτέρους (elders), προσευξάμενοι (having prayed), μετὰ (with) νηστειῶν (fasting) παρέθεντο (they committed) αὐτοὺς (them) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), εἰς (in) ὃν (whom) πεπιστεύκεισαν (they had believed).

⁴ παραγενόμενοι (Having come) δὲ (then) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), παρεδέχθησαν (they were welcomed) ἀπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders). ἀνήγγειλάν (They declared) τε (then) ὅσα (all that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐποίησεν (had done) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them).

⁶ Συνήχθησάν (Were gathered together) τε (then) οἱ (the) ἀπόστολοι (apostles) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) ἰδεῖν (to see) περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) λόγου (matter) τούτου (this).

²⁸ Προσέχετε (Take heed) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves) καὶ (and) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) ποιμνίῳ (flock) ἐν (among) ᾧ (which) ὑμᾶς (you) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἔθετο (has set) ἐπισκόπους (overseers), ποιμαίνειν (to shepherd) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἣν (which) περιεποιήσατο (He purchased) διὰ (with) τοῦ (-) αἵματος (blood) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own).

¹⁸ τῇ (On the) δὲ (now) ἐπιούσῃ (following day), εἰσῄει (went in) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) σὺν (with) ἡμῖν (us) πρὸς (unto) Ἰάκωβον (James), πάντες (all) τε (and) παρεγένοντο (arrived) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders).

¹⁷ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τέκνα (children), καὶ (also) κληρονόμοι (heirs), κληρονόμοι (heirs) μὲν (indeed) Θεοῦ (of God), συνκληρονόμοι (joint-heirs) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἴπερ (if indeed) συμπάσχομεν (we suffer with Him), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) συνδοξασθῶμεν (we may be glorified together). ¹⁸ Λογίζομαι (I reckon) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἄξια (comparable) τὰ (the) παθήματα (sufferings) τοῦ (of the) νῦν (present) καιροῦ (time are) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (coming) δόξαν (glory) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed) εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us).

¹ Οἴδαμεν (We know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) ἡ (-) ἐπίγειος (earthly) ἡμῶν (of us) οἰκία (house), τοῦ (the) σκήνους (tent), καταλυθῇ (should be destroyed), οἰκοδομὴν (a building) ἐκ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἔχομεν (we have), οἰκίαν (a house) ἀχειροποίητον (not made with hands), αἰώνιον (eternal) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

⁸ Θαρροῦμεν (We are confident) δὲ (now), καὶ (and) εὐδοκοῦμεν (are pleased), μᾶλλον (rather) ἐκδημῆσαι (to be absent) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body), καὶ (and) ἐνδημῆσαι (to be at home) πρὸς (with) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord).

¹⁹ οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) τοῦτό (this) μοι (for me) ἀποβήσεται (will turn out) εἰς (to) σωτηρίαν (deliverance) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ὑμῶν (your) δεήσεως (prayer) καὶ (and) ἐπιχορηγίας (the provision) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

²¹ Ἐμοὶ (To me) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) ζῆν (to live) Χριστὸς (is Christ), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἀποθανεῖν (to die) κέρδος (is gain). ²² εἰ (If I am) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) ζῆν (to live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (flesh), τοῦτό (this) μοι (for me) καρπὸς (is the fruit) ἔργου (of labor). καὶ (And) τί (what) αἱρήσομαι (shall I choose)? οὐ (Not) γνωρίζω (I know)! ²³ συνέχομαι (I am pressed) δὲ (however) ἐκ (between) τῶν (the) δύο (two), τὴν (the) ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) ἔχων (having) εἰς (for myself) τὸ (-) ἀναλῦσαι (to depart) καὶ (and) σὺν (with) Χριστῷ (Christ) εἶναι (to be), πολλῷ (very much) γὰρ (for) μᾶλλον (more) κρεῖσσον (better);

³ ἀπεθάνετε (You have died) γάρ (for), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you) κέκρυπται (has been hidden) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God). ⁴ ὅταν (When) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) φανερωθῇ (may be revealed), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν* (of you), τότε (then) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) φανερωθήσεσθε (will appear) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory).

¹ Πρεσβυτέρῳ (An elder) μὴ (not) ἐπιπλήξῃς (do rebuke), ἀλλὰ (but) παρακάλει (exhort him) ὡς (as) πατέρα (a father); νεωτέρους (younger men) ὡς (as) ἀδελφούς (brothers);

¹⁹ Κατὰ (Against) πρεσβυτέρου (an elder) κατηγορίαν (an accusation) μὴ (not) παραδέχου (do receive), ἐκτὸς (except) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐπὶ (upon) δύο (two) ἢ (or) τριῶν (three) μαρτύρων (witnesses).

⁸ λοιπὸν (From now on) ἀπόκειταί (is laid up) μοι (for me) ὁ (the) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) στέφανος (crown), ὃν (which) ἀποδώσει (will award) μοι (to me) ὁ (the) κύριος (Lord) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ὁ (the) δίκαιος (righteous) κριτής (judge); οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δὲ (however) ἐμοὶ (to me), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) πᾶσι (to all) τοῖς (those) ἠγαπηκόσι (loving) τὴν (the) ἐπιφάνειαν (appearing) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁵ Τούτου (Of this) χάριν (on account), ἀπέλιπόν (I left) σε (you) ἐν (in) Κρήτῃ (Crete), ἵνα (so that) τὰ (the things) λείποντα (lacking) ἐπιδιορθώσῃ (you might set in order), καὶ (and) καταστήσῃς (might appoint) κατὰ (in every) πόλιν (town) πρεσβυτέρους (elders), ὡς (as) ἐγώ (I) σοι (you) διεταξάμην (directed),

⁴ καὶ (And) φανερωθέντος (having been revealed) τοῦ (the) Ἀρχιποίμενος (Chief Shepherd), κομιεῖσθε (you will receive) τὸν (the) ἀμαράντινον (unfading) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory) στέφανον (crown).

² Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), νῦν (now) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐσμεν (are we), καὶ (and) οὔπω (not yet) ἐφανερώθη (has been revealed) τί (what) ἐσόμεθα (we will be). οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (when) φανερωθῇ (He appears), ὅμοιοι (like) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐσόμεθα (we will be), ὅτι (for) ὀψόμεθα (we will see) αὐτὸν (Him) καθώς (as) ἐστιν (He is).

³³ Ἀργυρίου (Silver) ἢ (or) χρυσίου (gold) ἢ (or) ἱματισμοῦ (clothing) οὐδενὸς (of no one) ἐπεθύμησα (I coveted). ³⁴ αὐτοὶ (You yourselves) γινώσκετε (know) ὅτι (that) ταῖς (the) χρείαις (needs) μου (of me) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to those) οὖσιν (being) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (me), ὑπηρέτησαν (ministered to) αἱ (the) χεῖρες (hands) αὗται (these).

¹⁵ οὕτως (Thus) τὸ (-) κατ’ (as to) ἐμὲ (me there is) πρόθυμον (readiness) καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (who are) ἐν (in) Ῥώμῃ (Rome), εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach the gospel).

⁷ Τίς (Who) στρατεύεται (serves as a soldier) ἰδίοις (at his own) ὀψωνίοις (expense) ποτέ (at any time)? τίς (Who) φυτεύει (plants) ἀμπελῶνα (a vineyard), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it) οὐκ (not) ἐσθίει (does eat)? ἢ (Or) τίς (who) ποιμαίνει (shepherds) ποίμνην (a flock), καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) γάλακτος (milk) τῆς (of the) ποίμνης (flock) οὐκ (not) ἐσθίει (does drink)?

¹⁶ Ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) εὐαγγελίζωμαι (I preach the gospel), οὐκ (nothing) ἔστιν (there is) μοι (to me) καύχημα (boasting); ἀνάγκη (necessity) γάρ (for) μοι (me) ἐπίκειται (is laid upon). οὐαὶ (Woe) γάρ (however) μοί (to me) ἐστιν (be), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) εὐαγγελίσωμαι (I should preach the gospel). ¹⁷ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἑκὼν (willingly) τοῦτο (this) πράσσω (I do), μισθὸν (a reward) ἔχω (I have); εἰ (if) δὲ (however) ἄκων (unwillingly), οἰκονομίαν (a stewardship) πεπίστευμαι (I am entrusted with).

¹⁴ Ἰδοὺ (Behold), τρίτον (third time) τοῦτο (this), ἑτοίμως (ready) ἔχω (I am) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) καταναρκήσω (I will burden you); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ζητῶ (I seek) τὰ (what is) ὑμῶν (yours), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑμᾶς (you). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ὀφείλει (ought) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῖς (for the) γονεῦσιν (parents) θησαυρίζειν (to treasure up), ἀλλὰ (but) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) τοῖς (for the) τέκνοις (children). ¹⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (now) ἥδιστα (most gladly) δαπανήσω (will spend), καὶ (and) ἐκδαπανηθήσομαι (will be utterly spent), ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you). εἰ (If) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγαπῶν* (loving), ἧσσον (less) ἀγαπῶμαι (I am loved)?

³ μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιεικῆ (gentle), ἄμαχον (peaceable), ἀφιλάργυρον (not loving money),

⁸ Διακόνους (Deacons) ὡσαύτως (likewise) σεμνούς (must be dignified), μὴ (not) διλόγους (double-tongued), μὴ (not) οἴνῳ (to wine) πολλῷ (much) προσέχοντας (being given), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδεῖς (greedy of dishonest gain),

⁷ Δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνέγκλητον (blameless) εἶναι (to be), ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκονόμον (steward); μὴ (not) αὐθάδη (self-willed), μὴ (not) ὀργίλον (quick tempered), μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδῆ (greedy of base gain),

¹¹ οὓς (whom) δεῖ (it is necessary) ἐπιστομίζειν (to silence), οἵτινες (who) ὅλους (whole) οἴκους (households) ἀνατρέπουσιν (overthrow), διδάσκοντες (teaching) ἃ (things that they) μὴ (not) δεῖ (ought), αἰσχροῦ (base) κέρδους (gain) χάριν (for the sake of).

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

¹ Ὑπομίμνῃσκε (Remind) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀρχαῖς (to rulers), ἐξουσίαις (to authorities), ὑποτάσσεσθαι (to be subject), πειθαρχεῖν (to be obedient); πρὸς (for) πᾶν (every) ἔργον (work) ἀγαθὸν (good), ἑτοίμους (ready) εἶναι (to be);

³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

¹² γόμον (cargo) χρυσοῦ (of gold), καὶ (and) ἀργύρου (of silver), καὶ (and) λίθου (of stone) τιμίου (precious), καὶ (and) μαργαριτῶν (of pearls); καὶ (and) βυσσίνου (of fine linen), καὶ (and) πορφύρας (of purple), καὶ (and) σιρικοῦ (of silk), καὶ (and) κοκκίνου (of scarlet); καὶ (and) πᾶν (all) ξύλον (wood) θύϊνον (citron) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) σκεῦος (article) ἐλεφάντινον (of ivory) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) σκεῦος (article) ἐκ (of) ξύλου (wood) τιμιωτάτου (most precious); καὶ (and) χαλκοῦ (of bronze), καὶ (and) σιδήρου (of iron), καὶ (and) μαρμάρου (of marble); ¹³ καὶ (and) κιννάμωμον (cinnamon), καὶ (and) ἄμωμον (spice), καὶ (and) θυμιάματα (incense), καὶ (and) μύρον (myrrh), καὶ (and) λίβανον (frankincense); καὶ (and) οἶνον (wine), καὶ (and) ἔλαιον (oil), καὶ (and) σεμίδαλιν (finest flour), καὶ (and) σῖτον (wheat); καὶ (and) κτήνη (cattle), καὶ (and) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) ἵππων (of horses), καὶ (and) ῥεδῶν (of chariots); καὶ (and) σωμάτων (of slaves) καὶ (and) ψυχὰς (souls) ἀνθρώπων (of men).

²⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) αὐτοὺς (them), εἶπεν (said), “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατακυριεύουσιν (exercise lordship over) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μεγάλοι (great ones) κατεξουσιάζουσιν (exercise authority over) αὐτῶν (them). ²⁶ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) ἔσται* (will it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant);

⁸ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) κληθῆτε (shall be called) ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi);’ εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (Teacher), πάντες (all) δὲ (now) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀδελφοί (brothers) ἐστε (are). ⁹ καὶ (And) πατέρα (father) μὴ (no one) καλέσητε (call) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth); εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ὁ (who is) οὐράνιος (in heaven). ¹⁰ μηδὲ (Neither) κληθῆτε (be called) καθηγηταί (instructors), ὅτι (since) καθηγητὴς (the instructor) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐστιν (is) εἷς (One), ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ).

⁴² καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called near) αὐτοὺς (them), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) δοκοῦντες (being accounted) ἄρχειν (to rule over) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατακυριεύουσιν (exercise lordship over) αὐτῶν (them); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μεγάλοι (great ones) αὐτῶν (of them) κατεξουσιάζουσιν (exercise authority over) αὐτῶν (them). ⁴³ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) δέ (however) ἐστιν (shall it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἔσται (will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to become) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (will be) πάντων (of all) δοῦλος (slave). ⁴⁵ καὶ (Even) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἦλθεν (came) διακονηθῆναι (to be served), ἀλλὰ (but) διακονῆσαι (to serve), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λύτρον (as a ransom) ἀντὶ (for) πολλῶν (many).”

²⁴ Ἐγένετο (There was) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) φιλονεικία (a dispute) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), τὸ (-) τίς (which) αὐτῶν (of them) δοκεῖ (is thought) εἶναι (to be) μείζων (the greatest). ²⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οἱ (The) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κυριεύουσιν (rule over) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐξουσιάζοντες (exercising authority over) αὐτῶν (them), εὐεργέται (benefactors) καλοῦνται (are called). ²⁶ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) οὐχ (not) οὕτως (thus shall be). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὁ (the) μείζων (greatest) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), γινέσθω (let him be) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) νεώτερος (younger); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἡγούμενος (leading), ὡς (as) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving). ²⁷ τίς (Who) γὰρ (for) μείζων (is greater), ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining) ἢ (or) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving)? οὐχὶ (Is not) ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining)? ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰμι (am), ὡς (as) ὁ (the One) διακονῶν (serving).

⁵ Τί (Who) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is) Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos)? τί (Who) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) Παῦλος (Paul)? διάκονοι (Servants) δι’ (through) ὧν (whom) ἐπιστεύσατε (you believed), καὶ (also) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἔδωκεν (has given)?

⁹ Θεοῦ (Of God) γάρ (for) ἐσμεν (we are) συνεργοί (fellow workers); Θεοῦ (God’s) γεώργιον (field), Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκοδομή (building) ἐστε (you are).

¹¹ Πλὴν (However), οὔτε (neither is) γυνὴ (woman) χωρὶς (separate from) ἀνδρὸς (man), οὔτε (nor) ἀνὴρ (man) χωρὶς (separate from) γυναικὸς (woman), ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

²⁴ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) κυριεύομεν (we lord it over) ὑμῶν (your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλὰ (but) συνεργοί (fellow workers) ἐσμεν (are) τῆς (of the) χαρᾶς (joy) ὑμῶν (with you); τῇ (in the) γὰρ (for) πίστει (faith) ἑστήκατε (you stand firm).

⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) κηρύσσομεν (do we proclaim), ἀλλὰ (but) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Κύριον (Lord); ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) δὲ (now), δούλους (servants) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (for the sake of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

¹⁷ Συμμιμηταί (Imitators together) μου (of me) γίνεσθε (be), ἀδελφοί (brothers), καὶ (and) σκοπεῖτε (observe) τοὺς (those) οὕτω* (thus) περιπατοῦντας (walking), καθὼς (as) ἔχετε (you have) τύπον (for a pattern) ἡμᾶς (us).

⁹ ἃ (What) καὶ (also) ἐμάθετε (you have learned) καὶ (and) παρελάβετε (have received) καὶ (and) ἠκούσατε (have heard) καὶ (and) εἴδετε (have seen) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (me), ταῦτα (these things) πράσσετε (practice); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace) ἔσται (will be) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you).

⁵ ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐκ (not) ἐγενήθη (came) εἰς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (word) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy), καὶ (and) [ἐν] (with) πληροφορίᾳ (full assurance) πολλῇ (much), καθὼς (just as) οἴδατε (you know) οἷοι (what) ἐγενήθημεν (we were) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) δι’ (on account of) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁶ Καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you) μιμηταὶ (imitators) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐγενήθητε (became), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), δεξάμενοι (having received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἐν (in) θλίψει (tribulation) πολλῇ (much), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (the joy) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy),

⁹ οὐχ (not) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἔχομεν (we have) ἐξουσίαν (the right), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) τύπον (as an example) δῶμεν (we may offer) ὑμῖν (to you), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) μιμεῖσθαι (you to imitate) ἡμᾶς (us).

¹² Μηδείς (No one) σου (your) τῆς (-) νεότητος (youth) καταφρονείτω (let despise), ἀλλὰ (but) τύπος (a pattern) γίνου (be) τῶν (for the) πιστῶν (believers) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (speech), ἐν (in) ἀναστροφῇ (conduct), ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἐν (in) πίστει (faith), ἐν (in) ἁγνείᾳ (purity).

⁷ Περὶ (In) πάντα (all things) σεαυτὸν (yourself) παρεχόμενος (be holding forth) τύπον (as a pattern) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works); ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching) ἀφθορίαν (integrity), σεμνότητα (dignity),

⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) γένος (are a race) ἐκλεκτόν (chosen), βασίλειον (a royal) ἱεράτευμα (priesthood), ἔθνος (a nation) ἅγιον (holy), λαὸς (a people) εἰς (for His) περιποίησιν (possession), ὅπως (so that) τὰς (the) ἀρετὰς (excellencies) ἐξαγγείλητε (you may proclaim) τοῦ (of the One) ἐκ (out of) σκότους (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καλέσαντος (having called), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) θαυμαστὸν (marvelous) αὐτοῦ (of Him) φῶς (light),

⁹ Ἔγραψά (I have written) τι (something) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church); ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the one) φιλοπρωτεύων (loving to be first) αὐτῶν (among them), Διοτρεφὴς (Diotrephes), οὐκ (not) ἐπιδέχεται (welcomes) ἡμᾶς (us). ¹⁰ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἐὰν (if) ἔλθω (I might come), ὑπομνήσω (I will bring to remembrance) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἃ (which) ποιεῖ (he is doing), λόγοις (with words) πονηροῖς (evil) φλυαρῶν (prating against) ἡμᾶς (us); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἀρκούμενος (being satisfied) ἐπὶ (with) τούτοις (these), οὔτε (neither) αὐτὸς (himself) ἐπιδέχεται (he receives) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) βουλομένους (purposing), κωλύει (he forbids), καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) ἐκβάλλει (he casts them out).

³¹ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), τότε (then) καθίσει (He will sit) ἐπὶ (upon the) θρόνου (throne) δόξης (of glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³² καὶ (And) συναχθήσονται (will be gathered) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), καὶ (and) ἀφορίσει (He will separate) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀπ’ (from) ἀλλήλων (one another), ὥσπερ (as) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ἀφορίζει (separates) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐρίφων (goats). ³³ καὶ (And) στήσει (He will set) τὰ (-) μὲν (indeed) πρόβατα (the sheep) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὰ (-) δὲ (and) ἐρίφια (the goats) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left). ³⁴ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will say) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τοῖς (to those) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Δεῦτε (Come), οἱ (those) εὐλογημένοι (being blessed) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), κληρονομήσατε (inherit) τὴν (the) ἡτοιμασμένην (having been prepared) ὑμῖν (for you) βασιλείαν (kingdom) ἀπὸ (from the) καταβολῆς (foundation) κόσμου (of the world). ³⁵ ἐπείνασα (I hungered) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) ἐδώκατέ (you gave) μοι (Me) φαγεῖν (to eat); ἐδίψησα (I thirsted), καὶ (and) ἐποτίσατέ (you gave to drink) με (me); ξένος (a stranger) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) συνηγάγετέ (you took in) με (Me); ³⁶ γυμνὸς (naked), καὶ (and) περιεβάλετέ (you clothed) με (Me); ἠσθένησα (I was sick), καὶ (and) ἐπεσκέψασθέ (you visited) με (Me); ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) ἤλθατε (you came) πρός (to) με (Me).’ ³⁷ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσονται (will answer) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) δίκαιοι (righteous), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), πότε (when) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) πεινῶντα (hungering), καὶ (and) ἐθρέψαμεν (fed You)? ἢ (Or) διψῶντα (thirsting), καὶ (and) ἐποτίσαμεν (gave You to drink)? ³⁸ πότε (When) δέ (now) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) ξένον (a stranger), καὶ (and) συνηγάγομεν (took You in)? ἢ (Or) γυμνὸν (naked), καὶ (and) περιεβάλομεν (clothed You)? ³⁹ πότε (When) δέ (now) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) ἀσθενοῦντα (ailing) ἢ (or) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) ἤλθομεν (came) πρός (to) σε (You)?’ ⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐρεῖ (will say) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐφ’ (to the extent) ὅσον (as much as) ἐποιήσατε (you did it) ἑνὶ (to one) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) μου (of Me) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least), ἐμοὶ (to Me) ἐποιήσατε (you did it).’ ⁴¹ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will He say) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to those) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), ‘Πορεύεσθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ‹οἱ› (those) κατηραμένοι (being cursed), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal), τὸ (-) ἡτοιμασμένον (having been prepared) τῷ (for the) διαβόλῳ (devil) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him). ⁴² ἐπείνασα (I hungered) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἐδώκατέ (you gave) μοι (to Me) φαγεῖν (to eat); (καὶ) (and) ἐδίψησα (I thirsted), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἐποτίσατέ (You gave to drink) με (Me); ⁴³ ξένος (a stranger) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) συνηγάγετέ (You took in) με (Me); γυμνὸς (naked), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) περιεβάλετέ (you did clothe) με (Me); ἀσθενὴς (sick) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπεσκέψασθέ (did you visit) με (Me).’ ⁴⁴ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσονται (will answer) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), πότε (when) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) πεινῶντα (hungering), ἢ (or) διψῶντα (thirsting), ἢ (or) ξένον (a stranger), ἢ (or) γυμνὸν (naked), ἢ (or) ἀσθενῆ (sick), ἢ (or) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) διηκονήσαμέν (did minister) σοι (to You)?’ ⁴⁵ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσεται (will He answer) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐφ’ (to the extent) ὅσον (that) οὐκ (not) ἐποιήσατε (you did it) ἑνὶ (to one) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least), οὐδὲ (neither) ἐμοὶ (to Me) ἐποιήσατε (did you).’ ⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) ἀπελεύσονται (will go away) οὗτοι (these) εἰς (into) κόλασιν (punishment) αἰώνιον (eternal); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) δίκαιοι (the righteous) εἰς (into) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).”

⁷ καὶ (and) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (-) θλιβομένοις (being oppressed), ἄνεσιν (repose) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) ἀποκαλύψει (revelation) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), μετ’ (with) ἀγγέλων (the angels) δυνάμεως (mighty) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ⁸ ἐν (in) πυρὶ (a fire) φλογός (of flame), διδόντος (inflicting) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) τοῖς (on those) μὴ (not) εἰδόσιν (knowing) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) τοῖς (on those) μὴ (not) ὑπακούουσιν (obeying) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ⁹ οἵτινες (who) δίκην (the penalty) τίσουσιν (will suffer) ὄλεθρον (of destruction) αἰώνιον (eternal), ἀπὸ (away from) προσώπου (the presence) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τῆς (of the) ἰσχύος (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ¹⁰ ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (He shall come) ἐνδοξασθῆναι (to be glorified) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) θαυμασθῆναι (to be marveled at) ἐν (among) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (those) πιστεύσασιν (having believed), ὅτι (because) ἐπιστεύθη (was believed) τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐφ’ (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that),

²⁰ Ὁ (May the) δὲ (now) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace), ὁ (-) ἀναγαγὼν (having brought) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) τὸν (the) ποιμένα (Shepherd) τῶν (of the) προβάτων (sheep) τὸν (-) μέγαν (great), ἐν (by) αἵματι (the blood) διαθήκης (of the covenant) αἰωνίου (eternal), τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus),

¹² Μακάριος (Blessed is the) ἀνὴρ (man) ὃς (who) ὑπομένει (endures) πειρασμόν (trial), ὅτι (because) δόκιμος (approved) γενόμενος (having been), λήμψεται (he will receive) τὸν (the) στέφανον (crown) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) ὃν (that) ἐπηγγείλατο (He has promised) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) αὐτόν (Him).

⁴ εἰς (to) κληρονομίαν (an inheritance) ἄφθαρτον (imperishable) καὶ (and) ἀμίαντον (undefiled) καὶ (and) ἀμάραντον (unfading), τετηρημένην (being reserved) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) εἰς (for) ὑμᾶς (you),

²⁵ Ἦτε (You were) γὰρ (for) ὡς (like) πρόβατα (sheep) πλανώμενοι (going astray), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπεστράφητε (you have returned) νῦν (now) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) Ποιμένα (Shepherd) καὶ (and) Ἐπίσκοπον (Overseer) τῶν (of the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you).

² ποιμάνατε (Shepherd) τὸ (the) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ποίμνιον (flock) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ‹ἐπισκοποῦντες› (exercising oversight) μὴ (not) ἀναγκαστῶς (under compulsion), ἀλλὰ (but) ἑκουσίως (willingly), κατὰ (according to) Θεόν (God); μηδὲ (and not) αἰσχροκερδῶς (for base gain), ἀλλὰ (but) προθύμως (eagerly);

⁷ Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἔρχεται (He is coming) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) νεφελῶν (clouds), καὶ (and) ὄψεται (will see) αὐτὸν (Him) πᾶς (every) ὀφθαλμὸς (eye), καὶ (and) οἵτινες (those who) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐξεκέντησαν (pierced), καὶ (and) κόψονται (will wail) ἐπ’ (because of) αὐτὸν (Him) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) φυλαὶ (tribes) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth). ναί (Yes)! ἀμήν (Amen)!

¹⁰ Μηδὲν* (Not) φοβοῦ (fear) ἃ (what) μέλλεις (you are about) πάσχειν (to suffer). ἰδοὺ (Behold), μέλλει (is about) βάλλειν (to cast) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἐξ (some of) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἵνα (so that) πειρασθῆτε (you might be tested); καὶ (and) ἕξετε (you shall have) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἡμερῶν (days) δέκα (ten). γίνου (Be) πιστὸς (faithful) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death), καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you) τὸν (the) στέφανον (crown) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).

¹¹ ἔρχομαι (I am coming) ταχύ (quickly). κράτει (Hold fast) ὃ (to what) ἔχεις (you have), ἵνα (so that) μηδεὶς (no one) λάβῃ (may take) τὸν (the) στέφανόν (crown) σου (of you).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) θρόνον (a throne) μέγαν (great) λευκὸν (white), καὶ (and) τὸν (the One) καθήμενον (sitting) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (it), οὗ (whose) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) προσώπου (face) ἔφυγεν (fled) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) οὐρανός (heaven), καὶ (and) τόπος (place) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) αὐτοῖς (for them). ¹² καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) τοὺς (the) νεκρούς (dead), τοὺς (-) μεγάλους (great) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) μικρούς (small), ἑστῶτας (standing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne), καὶ (and) βιβλία (books) ἠνοίχθησαν (were opened). Καὶ (And) ἄλλο (another) βιβλίον (book) ἠνοίχθη (was opened), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (the one) ζωῆς (of life). καὶ (And) ἐκρίθησαν (were judged) οἱ (the) νεκροὶ (dead) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the things) γεγραμμένων (having been written) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) βιβλίοις (books), κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹⁰ τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (in brotherly love) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) φιλόστοργοι (devoted) τῇ (-) τιμῇ (in honor), ἀλλήλους (one another) προηγούμενοι (esteeming),

¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

²¹ Ὑποτασσόμενοι (Be submitting yourselves) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (reverence) Χριστοῦ (of Christ):

³ μηδὲν (nothing) κατ’ (according to) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) μηδὲ (or) κατὰ (according to) κενοδοξίαν (vain conceit), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (in humility) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἡγούμενοι (be esteeming) ὑπερέχοντας (surpassing) ἑαυτῶν (themselves),

¹² Ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) οὖν (therefore), ὡς (as) ἐκλεκτοὶ (the elect) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἅγιοι (holy) καὶ (and) ἠγαπημένοι (beloved), σπλάγχνα (hearts) οἰκτιρμοῦ (of compassion), χρηστότητα (kindness), ταπεινοφροσύνην (humility), πραΰτητα (gentleness), μακροθυμίαν (and patience);

¹⁷ Πείθεσθε (Obey) τοῖς (those) ἡγουμένοις (leading) ὑμῶν (you), καὶ (and) ὑπείκετε (be submissive); αὐτοὶ (they) γὰρ (for) ἀγρυπνοῦσιν (watch) ὑπὲρ (over) τῶν (the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you), ὡς (as) λόγον (account) ἀποδώσοντες (about to give); ἵνα (that) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) τοῦτο (this) ποιῶσιν (they might do), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) στενάζοντες (groaning), ἀλυσιτελὲς (unprofitable) γὰρ (indeed) ὑμῖν (for you is) τοῦτο (this).

⁶ μείζονα (Greater) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace). διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (gives) χάριν (grace).”

³ ὧν (whose) ἔστω (let it be) οὐχ (not) ὁ (the) ἔξωθεν (external) ἐμπλοκῆς (of braiding) τριχῶν (of hair) καὶ (and) περιθέσεως (putting around) χρυσίων (of gold), ἢ (or) ἐνδύσεως (putting on) ἱματίων (of garments) κόσμος (adorning), ⁴ ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) κρυπτὸς (hidden) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ἄνθρωπος (man), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀφθάρτῳ (imperishable) τοῦ (of the) πραέως (gentle) καὶ (and) ἡσυχίου (quiet) πνεύματος (spirit), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πολυτελές (of great worth).

¹ Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin),

⁵ οἳ (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give) λόγον (account) τῷ (to Him who) ἑτοίμως (ready) ἔχοντι (is) κρῖναι (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead).

¹² Ὅστις (He who) δὲ (then) ὑψώσει (shall exalt) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled), καὶ (and) ὅστις (whoever) ταπεινώσει (shall humble) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).

⁵² καθεῖλεν (He has brought down) δυνάστας (rulers) ἀπὸ (from) θρόνων (thrones), καὶ (and) ὕψωσεν (exalted) ταπεινούς (the humble).

¹¹ ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

¹⁴ λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), κατέβη (went down) οὗτος (this one) δεδικαιωμένος (justified) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρ’ (rather than) ἐκεῖνον (that). ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

⁶ Ἔτι (Yet) γὰρ (indeed) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὄντων (being) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀσθενῶν (without strength) ἔτι (still), κατὰ (according to) καιρὸν (the right time), ὑπὲρ (for) ἀσεβῶν (the ungodly) ἀπέθανεν (died).

²² ἢ (Or) παραζηλοῦμεν (do we provoke to jealousy) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord)? μὴ (Not) ἰσχυρότεροι (stronger) αὐτοῦ (than He) ἐσμεν (are we)?

⁶ ὁ (the One) δοὺς (having given) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἀντίλυτρον (as a ransom) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all), τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) καιροῖς (in proper times) ἰδίοις (their own),

³ ἐφανέρωσεν (He revealed) δὲ (now), καιροῖς (in seasons) ἰδίοις (His own), τὸν (in the) λόγον (word) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐν (in) κηρύγματι (the proclamation) ὃ (with which) ἐπιστεύθην (have been entrusted) ἐγὼ (I), κατ’ (according to) ἐπιταγὴν (the commandment) τοῦ (of the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God).

⁹ Καυχάσθω (Let boast) δὲ (however) ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) ὁ (-) ταπεινὸς (of low degree) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὕψει (exaltation) αὐτοῦ (of him); ¹⁰ ὁ (he who is) δὲ (then) πλούσιος (rich), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ταπεινώσει (humiliation) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὅτι (because) ὡς (like) ἄνθος (a flower) χόρτου (of grass) παρελεύσεται (he will pass away).

¹⁰ ταπεινώθητε (Humble yourselves) ἐνώπιον (in the presence of) Κυρίου (the Lord), καὶ (and) ὑψώσει (He will exalt) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹⁰ Ὑπόδειγμα (As an example) λάβετε (take), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τῆς (-) κακοπαθίας (of suffering evils) καὶ (and) τῆς (-) μακροθυμίας (of patience), τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) οἳ (who) ἐλάλησαν (spoke) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).

²⁵ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), μὴ (not) μεριμνᾶτε (be anxious about) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (life) ὑμῶν (of you), τί (what) φάγητε (you should eat) ἢ (or) τί (what) πίητε (you should drink); μηδὲ (nor) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ὑμῶν (of you), τί (what) ἐνδύσησθε (you should put on). οὐχὶ (Not) ἡ (the) ψυχὴ (life) πλεῖόν (more) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (than the) τροφῆς (food), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (than) ἐνδύματος (clothing)? ²⁶ ἐμβλέψατε (Look) εἰς (at) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air), ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) σπείρουσιν (they sow), οὐδὲ (nor) θερίζουσιν (do they reap), οὐδὲ (nor) συνάγουσιν (do they gather) εἰς (into) ἀποθήκας (barns)— καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly) τρέφει (feeds) αὐτά (them). οὐχ (Not) ὑμεῖς (you) μᾶλλον (much) διαφέρετε (are more valuable) αὐτῶν (than they)?

³³ ζητεῖτε (Seek) δὲ (however) πρῶτον (first) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) [τοῦ (of) θεοῦ] (God) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) προστεθήσεται (will be added) ὑμῖν (to you). ³⁴ Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) μεριμνήσητε (be anxious) εἰς (about) τὴν (things) αὔριον (tomorrow), ἡ (-) γὰρ (for) αὔριον (tomorrow) μεριμνήσει (will be anxious about) ἑαυτῆς (itself). ἀρκετὸν (Sufficient) τῇ (to the) ἡμέρᾳ (day is) ἡ (the) κακία (trouble) αὐτῆς (of it).

³⁸ καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πρύμνῃ (stern), ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) προσκεφάλαιον (cushion) καθεύδων (sleeping). καὶ (And) ἐγείρουσιν (they awaken) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) λέγουσιν (say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), οὐ (not) μέλει (is it concern) σοι (to You) ὅτι (that) ἀπολλύμεθα (we perish)?”

¹¹ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) εἰσφέρωσιν (they bring) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπὶ (before) τὰς (the) συναγωγὰς (synagogues), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἀρχὰς (rulers), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), μὴ (not) μεριμνήσητε (be anxious) πῶς (how) ἢ (or) τί (what) ἀπολογήσησθε (you shall reply in defense), ἢ (or) τί (what) εἴπητε (you should say); ¹² τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) Ἅγιον (Holy) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) διδάξει (will teach) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (same) τῇ (the) ὥρᾳ (hour) ἃ (what) δεῖ (it behooves you) εἰπεῖν (to say).”

²² Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), μὴ (not) μεριμνᾶτε (be anxious) τῇ (for the) ψυχῇ (life), τί (what) φάγητε (you should eat), μηδὲ (nor) τῷ (for the) σώματι (body) (ὑμῶν) (of you), τί (what) ἐνδύσησθε (you should put on).

³⁰ ταῦτα (these things) γὰρ (for) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐπιζητοῦσιν (seek after); ὑμῶν (of you) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) οἶδεν (knows) ὅτι (that) χρῄζετε (you have need) τούτων (of these). ³¹ πλὴν (But) ζητεῖτε (seek you) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) προστεθήσεται (will be added) ὑμῖν (to you). ³² Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear), τὸ (-) μικρὸν (little) ποίμνιον (flock), ὅτι (for) εὐδόκησεν (took delight) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) δοῦναι (to give) ὑμῖν (you) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom).

¹³ ὅτι (because) μισθωτός (a hired servant) ἐστιν (he is), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μέλει (is himself concerned) αὐτῷ (to him) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep).

⁶ Μηδὲν (Nothing) μεριμνᾶτε (be anxious about), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything), τῇ (by) προσευχῇ (prayer) καὶ (and) τῇ (-) δεήσει (supplication), μετὰ (with) εὐχαριστίας (thanksgiving), τὰ (the) αἰτήματα (requests) ὑμῶν (of you) γνωριζέσθω (let be made known) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).

⁵ Ἀφιλάργυρος (Let be without covetousness) ὁ (your) τρόπος (manner of life), ἀρκούμενοι (being satisfied) τοῖς (with the) παροῦσιν (present); αὐτὸς (He Himself) γὰρ (for) εἴρηκεν (has said): “Οὐ (Never) μή (not) σε (you) ἀνῶ (will I leave), οὐδ’ (nor) οὐ (never) μή (not) σε (you) ἐγκαταλίπω (will I forsake).” ⁶ Ὥστε (So) θαρροῦντας (are confident) ἡμᾶς (we) λέγειν (to say): “Κύριος (The Lord is) ἐμοὶ (my) βοηθός (helper), [καὶ] (and) οὐ (not) φοβηθήσομαι (I will be afraid); τί (what) ποιήσει (shall do) μοι (to me) ἄνθρωπος (man)?”

¹ Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνήχθη (was led up) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἔρημον (wilderness) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) πειρασθῆναι (to be tempted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil).

¹¹ Τότε (Then) ἀφίησιν (leaves) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἄγγελοι (angels) προσῆλθον (came) καὶ (and) διηκόνουν (were ministering) αὐτῷ (to Him).

³⁹ ὁ (-) δὲ (and) ἐχθρὸς (the enemy) ὁ (-) σπείρας (having sown) αὐτά (them) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil); ὁ (-) δὲ (and) θερισμὸς (the harvest) συντέλεια (the consummation) αἰῶνός (of the age) ἐστιν (is), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) θερισταὶ (the harvesters) ἄγγελοί (angels) εἰσιν (are).

⁴² Γρηγορεῖτε (Keep watch) οὖν (therefore), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) ποίᾳ (on what) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ὁ (the) κύριος (Lord) ὑμῶν (of you) ἔρχεται (comes).

⁴⁸ Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπῃ (should say) ὁ (the) κακὸς (evil) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (that) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Χρονίζει (Delays) μου (of Me) ὁ (the) κύριος (master),’ ⁴⁹ καὶ (and) ἄρξηται (should begin) τύπτειν (to beat) τοὺς (the) συνδούλους (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐσθίῃ (to eat) δὲ (then) καὶ (and) πίνῃ (to drink) μετὰ (with) τῶν (those) μεθυόντων (being drunkards), ⁵⁰ ἥξει (will come) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (of that) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (a day) ᾗ (in which) οὐ (not) προσδοκᾷ (he does expect), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὥρᾳ (an hour) ᾗ (which) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (he is aware),

⁴¹ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will He say) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to those) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), ‘Πορεύεσθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ‹οἱ› (those) κατηραμένοι (being cursed), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal), τὸ (-) ἡτοιμασμένον (having been prepared) τῷ (for the) διαβόλῳ (devil) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him).

⁴⁵ Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπῃ (should say) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (that) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Χρονίζει (Delays) ὁ (the) κύριός (master) μου (of Me) ἔρχεσθαι (to come),’ καὶ (and) ἄρξηται (should begin) τύπτειν (to beat) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (men-servants) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) παιδίσκας (maid-servants), ἐσθίειν (to eat) τε (also) καὶ (and) πίνειν (to drink) καὶ (and) μεθύσκεσθαι (to get drunk), ⁴⁶ ἥξει (will come) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (that) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (a day) ᾗ (in which) οὐ (not) προσδοκᾷ (he does expect), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὥρᾳ (an hour) ᾗ (that) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (he knows), καὶ (and) διχοτομήσει (he will cut in two) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) μέρος (place) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀπίστων (unbelievers) θήσει (will appoint).

³⁴ Προσέχετε (Take heed) δὲ (now) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) βαρηθῶσιν (be burdened) ὑμῶν (of you) αἱ (the) καρδίαι (hearts) ἐν (with) κραιπάλῃ (dissipation) καὶ (and) μέθῃ (drunkenness) καὶ (and) μερίμναις (cares) βιωτικαῖς (of life) — καὶ (and) ἐπιστῇ (would come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) αἰφνίδιος (suddenly) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνη (that) ὡς (as) παγίς (a snare).

³⁶ ἀγρυπνεῖτε (Watch) δὲ (also) ἐν (at) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season), δεόμενοι (praying) ἵνα (that) κατισχύσητε (you may have strength) ἐκφυγεῖν (to escape) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) μέλλοντα (are about) γίνεσθαι (to come to pass) καὶ (and) σταθῆναι (to stand) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).”

³¹ Σίμων (Simon), Σίμων (Simon), ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) ἐξῃτήσατο (demanded to have) ὑμᾶς (all of you) τοῦ (-) σινιάσαι (to sift) ὡς (like) τὸν (-) σῖτον (wheat);

⁴⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστὲ (are), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τοῦ (of) πατρὸς (father) ὑμῶν (of you), θέλετε (you desire) ποιεῖν (to do). ἐκεῖνος (He) ἀνθρωποκτόνος (a murderer) ἦν (was) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστηκεν (has stood), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). ὅταν (Whenever) λαλῇ (he might speak) τὸ (-) ψεῦδος (falsehood), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) λαλεῖ (he speaks); ὅτι (for) ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστὶν (he is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of it).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this), εἰδότες (knowing) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (that it is the) ὥρα (hour) ἤδη (already) ὑμᾶς (for you) ἐξ (out of) ὕπνου (sleep) ἐγερθῆναι (to awaken); νῦν (now) γὰρ (for) ἐγγύτερον (nearer) ἡμῶν (is of us) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation) ἢ (than) ὅτε (when first) ἐπιστεύσαμεν (we believed). ¹² ἡ (The) νὺξ (night) προέκοψεν (is nearly over), ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἡμέρα (the day) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). ἀποθώμεθα (We should cast off) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness); ἐνδυσώμεθα (we should put on) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ὅπλα (armor) τοῦ (-) φωτός (of light). ¹³ ὡς (As) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime), εὐσχημόνως (properly) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk), μὴ (not) κώμοις (in reveling) καὶ (and) μέθαις (drinking), μὴ (not) κοίταις (in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), μὴ (not) ἔριδι (in dissension) καὶ (and) ζήλῳ (jealousy).

²⁷ μηδὲ (neither) δίδοτε (give) τόπον (opportunity) τῷ (to the) διαβόλῳ (devil).

¹¹ ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πρὸς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑμᾶς (you) στῆναι (to stand) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) μεθοδείας (schemes) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil),

⁶ ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) μὴ (not) καθεύδωμεν (we should sleep) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) λοιποί (others), ἀλλὰ (but) γρηγορῶμεν (we should watch) καὶ (and) νήφωμεν (we should be sober). ⁷ οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) καθεύδοντες (sleeping), νυκτὸς (by night) καθεύδουσιν (sleep); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μεθυσκόμενοι (becoming drunk), νυκτὸς (by night) μεθύουσιν (get drunk). ⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however), ἡμέρας (of the day) ὄντες (being), νήφωμεν (should be sober), ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) θώρακα (the breastplate) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), καὶ (and) περικεφαλαίαν (the helmet) ἐλπίδα (the hope) σωτηρίας (of salvation),

⁹ Ὡσαύτως (Likewise) ‹καὶ› (also) γυναῖκας (women), ἐν (in) καταστολῇ (apparel) κοσμίῳ (respectable), μετὰ (with) αἰδοῦς (modesty) καὶ (and) σωφροσύνης (self-control), κοσμεῖν (should adorn) ἑαυτάς (themselves), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) πλέγμασιν (braided hair), καὶ (or) χρυσίῳ (gold), ἢ (or) μαργαρίταις (pearls), ἢ (or) ἱματισμῷ (clothing) πολυτελεῖ (costly),

¹⁵ σωθήσεται (She will be saved) δὲ (however) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) τεκνογονίας (childbearing), ἐὰν (if) μείνωσιν (they abide) ἐν (in) πίστει (faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπῃ (love) καὶ (and) ἁγιασμῷ (holiness), μετὰ (with) σωφροσύνης (self-restraint).

² δεῖ (It behooves) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνεπίλημπτον (above reproach) εἶναι (to be), μιᾶς (of one) γυναικὸς (wife) ἄνδρα (the husband), νηφάλιον (sober), σώφρονα (self-controlled), κόσμιον (respectable), φιλόξενον (hospitable), διδακτικόν (able to teach),

¹¹ Γυναῖκας (Women) ὡσαύτως (likewise) σεμνάς (must be dignified), μὴ (not) διαβόλους (slanderers), νηφαλίους (clear-minded), πιστὰς (faithful) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things).

¹⁷ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Κύριός (the Lord) μοι (me) παρέστη (stood by) καὶ (and) ἐνεδυνάμωσέν (strengthened) με (me), ἵνα (so that) δι’ (through) ἐμοῦ (me) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (proclamation) πληροφορηθῇ (would be fully accomplished), καὶ (and) ἀκούσωσιν (should hear) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles). καὶ (And) ἐρρύσθην (I was delivered) ἐκ (out of) στόματος (the mouth) λέοντος (of the lion).

⁸ ἀλλὰ (but) φιλόξενον (hospitable), φιλάγαθον (a lover of good), σώφρονα (self-controlled), δίκαιον (upright), ὅσιον (holy), ἐγκρατῆ (and disciplined);

² Πρεσβύτας (The aged men) νηφαλίους (sober-minded) εἶναι (are to be), σεμνούς (dignified), σώφρονας (self-controlled), ὑγιαίνοντας (sound) τῇ (-) πίστει (in faith), τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (in love), τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (in endurance);

⁴ ἵνα (so that) σωφρονίζωσιν (they may train) τὰς (the) νέας (young women) φιλάνδρους (lovers of their husbands) εἶναι (to be), φιλοτέκνους (loving their children),

⁶ Τοὺς (The) νεωτέρους (younger men), ὡσαύτως (likewise), παρακάλει (exhort) σωφρονεῖν (to be self-controlled).

¹² παιδεύουσα (instructing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἵνα (that), ἀρνησάμενοι (having denied) τὴν (-) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) τὰς (-) κοσμικὰς (worldly) ἐπιθυμίας (passions), σωφρόνως (discreetly) καὶ (and) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ζήσωμεν (we should live) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age),

⁷ Ὑποτάγητε (Subject yourselves) οὖν (therefore) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ἀντίστητε (Resist) δὲ (however) τῷ (the) διαβόλῳ (devil), καὶ (and) φεύξεται (he will flee) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you).

¹³ Διὸ (Therefore) ἀναζωσάμενοι (having girded up) τὰς (the) ὀσφύας (loins) τῆς (of the) διανοίας (mind) ὑμῶν (of you), νήφοντες (being sober-minded), τελείως (fully) ἐλπίσατε (set your hope) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) φερομένην (being brought) ὑμῖν (to you) χάριν (grace) ἐν (in) ἀποκαλύψει (the revelation) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

⁷ Πάντων (Of all) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) τέλος (end) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). σωφρονήσατε (Be clear-minded) οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) νήψατε (sober) εἰς (for the purpose of) προσευχάς (prayers),

⁸ ὁ (The one) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστίν (is), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἁμαρτάνει (has been sinning). εἰς (For) τοῦτο (this reason) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) λύσῃ (He might destroy) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil). ⁹ Πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐ (not) ποιεῖ (practices), ὅτι (because) σπέρμα (seed) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἁμαρτάνειν (to continue sinning), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (he has been born). ¹⁰ ἐν (Through) τούτῳ (this) φανερά (manifest) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil): πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) μὴ (not) ποιῶν (practicing) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), καὶ (and also) ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him).

⁹ καὶ (And) ἐβλήθη (was thrown out) ὁ (the) δράκων (dragon) ὁ (-) μέγας (great), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὁ (who) καλούμενος (is called) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ὁ (-) πλανῶν (deceiving) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (inhabited world) ὅλην (whole). ἐβλήθη (He was thrown down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐβλήθησαν (were thrown down).

¹² διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), εὐφραίνεσθε (rejoice) ‹οἱ› (O) οὐρανοὶ (heavens), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them) σκηνοῦντες (dwelling)! οὐαὶ (Woe to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), ὅτι (because) κατέβη (has come down) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἔχων (having) θυμὸν (fury) μέγαν (great), εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) ὀλίγον (a short) καιρὸν (time) ἔχει (he has).”

² καὶ (And) ἐκράτησεν (he seized) τὸν (the) δράκοντα (dragon), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), καὶ (and) ἔδησεν (bound) αὐτὸν (him) χίλια (for a thousand) ἔτη (years).

¹⁰ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil), ὁ (the one) πλανῶν (deceiving) αὐτοὺς (them), ἐβλήθη (was cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρὸς (of fire) καὶ (and) θείου (of sulfur), ὅπου (where are) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ψευδοπροφήτης (false prophet); καὶ (and) βασανισθήσονται (they will be tormented) ἡμέρας (day) καὶ (and) νυκτὸς (night) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages).

³ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil), “Εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰπὲ (speak) τῷ (to the) λίθῳ (stone) τούτῳ (this), ἵνα (that) γένηται (it should become) ἄρτος (bread).” ⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθη (answered) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Γέγραπται (It has been written) ὅτι (-): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἐπ’ (on) ἄρτῳ (bread) μόνῳ (alone) ζήσεται (shall live) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man).’” ⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀναγαγὼν (having led up) αὐτὸν (Him), ἔδειξεν (he showed) αὐτῷ (Him) πάσας (all) τὰς (the) βασιλείας (kingdoms) τῆς (of the) οἰκουμένης (world) ἐν (in) στιγμῇ (a moment) χρόνου (of time). ⁶ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil), “Σοὶ (To You) δώσω (will I give) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this) ἅπασαν (all), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτῶν (of it); ὅτι (for) ἐμοὶ (to me) παραδέδοται (it has been delivered), καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) ἐὰν (if) θέλω (I wish), δίδωμι (I give) αὐτήν (it). ⁷ σὺ (You) οὖν (therefore), ἐὰν (if) προσκυνήσῃς (You will worship) ἐνώπιον (before) ἐμοῦ (me), ἔσται (will be) σοῦ (Yours) πᾶσα (all).” ⁸ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Προσκυνήσεις (You shall worship) «Κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God) σου» (of You), καὶ (and) αὐτῷ (Him) μόνῳ (only) λατρεύσεις (you shall serve).’” ⁹ Ἤγαγεν (He led) δὲ (also) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) ἔστησεν (set) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸ (the) πτερύγιον (pinnacle) τοῦ (of the) ἱεροῦ (temple), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), βάλε (cast) σεαυτὸν (Yourself) ἐντεῦθεν (from here) κάτω (down). ¹⁰ γέγραπται (It has been written) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-): ‘Τοῖς (To the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐντελεῖται (He will give orders) περὶ (concerning) σοῦ (You), τοῦ (-) διαφυλάξαι (to guard) σε (You); ¹¹ καὶ (and) ὅτι (-) ἐπὶ (in) χειρῶν (their hands) ἀροῦσίν (will they bear) σε (You), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) προσκόψῃς (You strike) πρὸς (against) λίθον (a stone) τὸν (the) πόδα (foot) σου (of You).’” ¹² Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (-), “Εἴρηται (It has been said), ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἐκπειράσεις (you shall test) Κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you).’”

³² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐδεήθην (begged) περὶ (for) σοῦ (you), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐκλίπῃ (may fail) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σου (of you); καὶ (and) σύ (you), ποτε (when) ἐπιστρέψας (you have turned back), στήρισον (strengthen) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) σου (of you).”

³³ ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχητε (you may have). ἐν (In) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἔχετε (you have). ἀλλὰ (But) θαρσεῖτε (take courage); ἐγὼ (I) νενίκηκα (have overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).”

²² ἐπιστηρίζοντες (strengthening) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting them) ἐμμένειν (to continue) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) “Διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) θλίψεων (tribulations) δεῖ (it behooves) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

¹³ πειρασμὸς (Temptation) ὑμᾶς (you) οὐκ (not) εἴληφεν (has seized), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἀνθρώπινος (what is common to man); πιστὸς (faithful) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Θεός (is God), ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) ἐάσει (will allow) ὑμᾶς (you) πειρασθῆναι (to be tempted) ὑπὲρ (beyond) ὃ (what) δύνασθε (you are able), ἀλλὰ (but) ποιήσει (will provide), σὺν (with) τῷ (the) πειρασμῷ (temptation), καὶ (also) τὴν (the) ἔκβασιν (escape), τοῦ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑπενεγκεῖν (to endure it).

¹¹ ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πρὸς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑμᾶς (you) στῆναι (to stand) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) μεθοδείας (schemes) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil), ¹² ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡμῖν (to us) ἡ (the) πάλη (wrestling) πρὸς (against) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) σάρκα (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἀρχάς (rulers), πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), πρὸς (against) τοὺς (the) κοσμοκράτορας (cosmic powers) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness) τούτου (this), πρὸς (against) τὰ (the) πνευματικὰ (spiritual forces) τῆς (-) πονηρίας (of evil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms). ¹³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἀναλάβετε (take up) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) δυνηθῆτε (you may be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to withstand) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) πονηρᾷ (evil), καὶ (and) ἅπαντα (all things) κατεργασάμενοι (having done), στῆναι (to stand).

¹⁶ ἐν (besides) πᾶσιν (all), ἀναλαβόντες (having taken up) τὸν (the) θυρεὸν (shield) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith), ἐν (with) ᾧ (which) δυνήσεσθε (you will be able) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) βέλη (arrows) τοῦ (of the) πονηροῦ (evil one) τὰ (-) πεπυρωμένα (flaming) σβέσαι (to quench).

⁵ εἰ (If) γὰρ (truly) καὶ (indeed) τῇ (in the) σαρκὶ (flesh) ἄπειμι (I am absent), ἀλλὰ (yet) τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit) σὺν (with) ὑμῖν (you) εἰμι (I am), χαίρων (rejoicing) καὶ (and) βλέπων (seeing) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) τάξιν (good order) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) στερέωμα (firmness) τῆς (of the) εἰς (in) Χριστὸν (Christ) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁵ τῶν (who) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἀποκτεινάντων (having killed), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) τοὺς (their own) προφήτας (prophets), καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκδιωξάντων (having driven out), καὶ (and) Θεῷ (God) μὴ (not) ἀρεσκόντων (pleasing), καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐναντίων (who are set against), ¹⁶ κωλυόντων (hindering) ἡμᾶς (us) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) λαλῆσαι (to speak), ἵνα (that) σωθῶσιν (they might be saved), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) ἀναπληρῶσαι (to fill up) αὐτῶν (their) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins) πάντοτε (always). ἔφθασεν (Has come) δὲ (now) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτοὺς (them) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) εἰς (to the) τέλος (utmost).

³ τὸ (that) μηδένα (no one) σαίνεσθαι (be moved) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) θλίψεσιν (tribulations) ταύταις (these). αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) γὰρ (for) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) κείμεθα (we are destined).

¹² ἀγωνίζου (Fight) τὸν (the) καλὸν (good) ἀγῶνα (fight) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith). ἐπιλαβοῦ (Lay hold) τῆς (of the) αἰωνίου (eternal) ζωῆς (life), εἰς (to) ἣν (which) ἐκλήθης (you were called), καὶ (and also) ὡμολόγησας (did confess) τὴν (the) καλὴν (good) ὁμολογίαν (confession) ἐνώπιον (before) πολλῶν (many) μαρτύρων (witnesses).

¹² καὶ (Also) πάντες (all) δὲ (now) οἱ (-) θέλοντες (desiring) ζῆν (to live) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) διωχθήσονται (will be persecuted).

⁷ τὸν (The) καλὸν (good) ἀγῶνα (fight) ἠγώνισμαι (I have fought), τὸν (the) δρόμον (race) τετέλεκα (I have finished), τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) τετήρηκα (I have kept).

³³ οἳ (who) διὰ (by) πίστεως (faith) κατηγωνίσαντο (conquered) βασιλείας (kingdoms), εἰργάσαντο* (administered) δικαιοσύνην (justice), ἐπέτυχον (obtained) ἐπαγγελιῶν (promises); ἔφραξαν (shut) στόματα (the mouths) λεόντων (of lions),

⁶ ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (you greatly rejoice), ὀλίγον (for a little while) ἄρτι (at present), εἰ (if) δέον (being necessary) [ἐστὶν] (it is), λυπηθέντες (having been put to grief) ἐν (by) ποικίλοις (various) πειρασμοῖς (trials),

²¹ Εἰς (To this) τοῦτο (hereunto) γὰρ (for) ἐκλήθητε (you have been called), ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἔπαθεν (suffered) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), ὑμῖν (you) ὑπολιμπάνων (leaving) ὑπογραμμὸν (an example) ἵνα (that) ἐπακολουθήσητε (you should follow after) τοῖς (the) ἴχνεσιν (steps) αὐτοῦ (of Him):

¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πάσχοιτε (you should suffer) διὰ (because of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), μακάριοι (you are blessed). “Τὸν (-) δὲ (And) φόβον (the threats) αὐτῶν (of them) μὴ (not) φοβηθῆτε (you should be afraid of), μηδὲ (neither) ταραχθῆτε (should you be troubled).”

¹³ ἀλλὰ (But) καθὸ (as) κοινωνεῖτε (you have shared) τοῖς (in the) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) παθήμασιν (sufferings), χαίρετε (rejoice), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀποκαλύψει (revelation) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), χαρῆτε (you may rejoice) ἀγαλλιώμενοι (exulting).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) ἐδόθη (were given) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἑκάστῳ (each) στολὴ (robes) λευκή (white), καὶ (and) ἐρρέθη (it was said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἵνα (that) ἀναπαύσονται (they shall rest) ἔτι (yet) χρόνον (a time) μικρόν (little), ἕως (until) πληρωθῶσιν (would be fulfilled) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) σύνδουλοι (fellow servants) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) αὐτῶν (of them), οἱ (those) μέλλοντες (being about) ἀποκτέννεσθαι (to be killed) ὡς (as) καὶ (also had been) αὐτοί (they).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) εἴρηκα (I said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Κύριέ (Lord) μου (of me), σὺ (you) οἶδας (know).” Καὶ (And) εἶπέν (he said) μοι (to me), “Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the ones) ἐρχόμενοι (coming) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) θλίψεως (tribulation) τῆς (-) μεγάλης (great), καὶ (and) ἔπλυναν (they have washed) τὰς (the) στολὰς (robes) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἐλεύκαναν (made white) αὐτὰς (them) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb).

²⁰ Νόμος (The law) δὲ (now) παρεισῆλθεν (entered), ἵνα (so that) πλεονάσῃ (might abound) τὸ (the) παράπτωμα (trespass); οὗ (where) δὲ (however) ἐπλεόνασεν (abounded) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ὑπερεπερίσσευσεν (overabounded) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace), ²¹ ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἐβασίλευσεν (reigned) ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (death), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) βασιλεύσῃ (might reign) διὰ (through) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

²⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), πάντα (all things) συνεργεῖ (works together) (ὁ (-) θεὸς) (God) εἰς (for) ἀγαθόν (good), τοῖς (to those) κατὰ (according to) πρόθεσιν (His purpose) κλητοῖς (called) οὖσιν (being). ²⁹ ὅτι (For) οὓς (those whom) προέγνω (He foreknew), καὶ (also) προώρισεν (He predestined to be) συμμόρφους (conformed to) τῆς (the) εἰκόνος (image) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) πρωτότοκον (firstborn) ἐν (among) πολλοῖς (many) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers). ³⁰ οὓς (Those whom) δὲ (then) προώρισεν (He predestined), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐκάλεσεν (He called); καὶ (and) οὓς (whom) ἐκάλεσεν (He called), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified); οὓς (whom) δὲ (then) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδόξασεν (He glorified).

¹¹ μήπω (not yet) γὰρ (for) γεννηθέντων (having been born), μηδὲ (nor) πραξάντων (having done) τι (anything) ἀγαθὸν (good) ἢ (or) φαῦλον (evil), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) κατ’ (according to) ἐκλογὴν (election) πρόθεσις (purpose) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένῃ (might stand),

²⁴ οὓς (whom) καὶ (even) ἐκάλεσεν (He has called), ἡμᾶς (us) οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐξ (out from) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐξ (out from) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles)?

²⁵ Τῷ (To Him) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) ὑμᾶς (you) στηρίξαι (to strengthen), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) εὐαγγέλιόν (gospel) μου (my) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (preaching) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), κατὰ (according to) ἀποκάλυψιν (the revelation) μυστηρίου (of the mystery), χρόνοις (in times) αἰωνίοις (of the ages) σεσιγημένου (having been kept secret),

¹⁷ τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) παραυτίκα (momentary) ἐλαφρὸν (lightness) τῆς (-) θλίψεως (affliction) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us), καθ’ (far) ὑπερβολὴν (surpassing) εἰς (to) ὑπερβολὴν (excessiveness) αἰώνιον (an eternal) βάρος (weight) δόξης (of glory) κατεργάζεται (is producing) ἡμῖν (for us),

⁷ ἐρριζωμένοι (having been rooted) καὶ (and) ἐποικοδομούμενοι (being built up) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) βεβαιούμενοι (being strengthened in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) καθὼς (just as) ἐδιδάχθητε (you were taught), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (with) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving).

¹² παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) παραμυθούμενοι (comforting) καὶ (and) μαρτυρόμενοι (charging) εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) περιπατεῖν (to walk) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (who) καλοῦντος (calls) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) βασιλείαν (kingdom) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory).

¹⁷ παρακαλέσαι (may He encourage) ὑμῶν (your) τὰς (-) καρδίας (hearts) καὶ (and) στηρίξαι (may He strengthen them) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) ἔργῳ (work) καὶ (and) λόγῳ (word) ἀγαθῷ (good).

³ Πιστὸς (Faithful) δέ (however) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), ὃς (who) στηρίξει (will strengthen) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) φυλάξει (will keep you) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil).

⁹ τοῦ (the One) σώσαντος (having saved) ἡμᾶς (us), καὶ (and) καλέσαντος (having called us) κλήσει (with a calling) ἁγίᾳ (holy), οὐ (not) κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἡμῶν (of us), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) ἰδίαν (His own) πρόθεσιν (purpose) καὶ (and) χάριν (grace), τὴν (-) δοθεῖσαν (having been given) ἡμῖν (us) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) πρὸ (before) χρόνων (time) αἰωνίων (eternal),

¹⁰ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), πάντα (all things) ὑπομένω (I endure) διὰ (for the sake of) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) σωτηρίας (the salvation) τύχωσιν (may obtain) τῆς (that is) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), μετὰ (with) δόξης (glory) αἰωνίου (eternal).

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), διαθήκης (of a covenant) καινῆς (new) μεσίτης (the mediator) ἐστίν (He is), ὅπως (so that), θανάτου (death) γενομένου (having taken place), εἰς (for) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) τῶν (of the) ἐπὶ (under) τῇ (the) πρώτῃ (first) διαθήκῃ (covenant) παραβάσεων (transgressions), τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) λάβωσιν (might receive) οἱ (those) κεκλημένοι (having been called), τῆς (of the) αἰωνίου (eternal) κληρονομίας (inheritance).

¹⁵ ἀλλὰ (But) κατὰ (as) τὸν (the One) καλέσαντα (having called) ὑμᾶς (you) ἅγιον (is holy), καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (yourselves) ἅγιοι (holy) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) ἀναστροφῇ (your conduct) γενήθητε (be),

¹¹ εἴ (if) τις (anyone) λαλεῖ (speaks), ὡς (as) λόγια (oracles) Θεοῦ (of God); εἴ (if) τις (anyone) διακονεῖ (serves), ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἰσχύος (strength) ἧς (which) χορηγεῖ (supplies) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) δοξάζηται (may be glorified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ᾧ (to whom) ἐστιν (be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

³⁶ ὅτι (For) ἐξ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (-) πάντα (are all things). αὐτῷ (To Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages)! ἀμήν (Amen).

⁶ καὶ (and) ἐποίησεν (He has made) ἡμᾶς (us) βασιλείαν (a kingdom), ἱερεῖς (priests) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) καὶ (and) Πατρὶ (Father) αὐτοῦ (of Him) — αὐτῷ (to Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (dominion) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

²¹ τοῦτον (Him) οὖν (therefore) ἰδὼν (having seen), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) λέγει (says) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Κύριε (Lord), οὗτος (this man) δὲ (and) τί (what about)?”

²³ ὃς (who) παραγενόμενος (having come) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἐχάρη (rejoiced) καὶ (and) παρεκάλει (was exhorting) πάντας (all) τῇ (with) προθέσει (resolute purpose) τῆς (-) καρδίας (of heart) προσμένειν (to abide) (ἐν) (in) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord).

²⁴ ἀλλ’ (But) οὐδενὸς (not any) λόγου (account) ποιοῦμαι (I make) τὴν (my) ψυχὴν (life) τιμίαν (dear) ἐμαυτῷ (to myself), ὡς (so as) τελειῶσαι* (to finish) τὸν (the) δρόμον (course) μου (of me), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ἣν (that) ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διαμαρτύρασθαι (to testify fully) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

² δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) καὶ (also) τὴν (-) προσαγωγὴν (access) ἐσχήκαμεν (we have) τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) ταύτην (this) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἑστήκαμεν (we stand); καὶ (and) καυχώμεθα (we boast) ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁹ ὁ (The) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) γὰρ (for) Υἱὸς (Son), Χριστὸς (Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the One) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) δι’ (by) ἡμῶν (us) κηρυχθείς (having been proclaimed) δι’ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) καὶ (and) Σιλουανοῦ (Silvanus) καὶ (and) Τιμοθέου (Timothy), οὐκ (not) ἐγένετο (was) “Ναί (Yes)” καὶ (and) “Οὔ (No),” ἀλλὰ (but) “Ναί (Yes)” ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) γέγονεν (it has always been).

⁸ Ἀλλὰ (But) καὶ (even) ἐὰν (if) ἡμεῖς (we) ἢ (or) ἄγγελος (an angel) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) εὐαγγελίζηται* (should preach a gospel) ὑμῖν (to you) παρ’ (contrary to) ὃ (what) εὐηγγελισάμεθα (we proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀνάθεμα (accursed) ἔστω (let him be)! ⁹ ὡς (As) προειρήκαμεν (we have said before), καὶ (even) ἄρτι (now) πάλιν (again) λέγω (I say), εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (to you) εὐαγγελίζεται (is preaching a gospel) παρ’ (contrary to) ὃ (what) παρελάβετε (you received), ἀνάθεμα (accursed) ἔστω (let him be)!

⁷ Τὰ (The things) κατ’ (concerning) ἐμὲ (me) πάντα (all) γνωρίσει (will make known) ὑμῖν (to you) Τυχικὸς (Tychicus), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητὸς (beloved) ἀδελφὸς (brother) καὶ (and) πιστὸς (faithful) διάκονος (servant) καὶ (and) σύνδουλος (fellow bond-servant) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord),

¹⁵ Καταλιπόντες (Having left) εὐθεῖαν (the straight) ὁδὸν (way), ἐπλανήθησαν (they have gone astray), ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) τοῦ (-) Βοσὸρ* (son of Bosor), ὃς (who) μισθὸν (the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) ἠγάπησεν (loved);

⁹ Εἰ (If) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) λαμβάνομεν (we receive), ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μείζων (greater) ἐστίν (is). ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὅτι (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (He has testified) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁰ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἔχει (has) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἐν (in) αὑτῷ (himself). ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ψεύστην (a liar) πεποίηκεν (has made) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἣν (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has testified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹² Δημητρίῳ (To Demetrius) μεμαρτύρηται (witness has been given) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all), καὶ (and) ὑπὸ (by) αὐτῆς (itself) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth); καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (also) μαρτυροῦμεν (bear witness), καὶ (and) οἶδας (you know) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is).

² καὶ (And) ἔκραξεν (he cried out) ἐν (in) ἰσχυρᾷ (a mighty) φωνῇ (voice), λέγων (saying): “Ἔπεσεν (Fallen), ἔπεσεν (Fallen is) Βαβυλὼν (Babylon) ἡ (the) μεγάλη (great)! καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (she has become) κατοικητήριον (a habitation) δαιμονίων (of demons), καὶ (and) φυλακὴ (a prison) παντὸς (of every) πνεύματος (spirit) ἀκαθάρτου (unclean), καὶ (and) φυλακὴ (a prison) παντὸς (of every) ὀρνέου (bird) ἀκαθάρτου (unclean), ‹καὶ (and) φυλακὴ (a prison) παντὸς (of every) θηρίου (creature) ἀκαθάρτου› (unclean) καὶ (and) μεμισημένου (having been hated).
