⁵ καὶ (Although) θέλων (wishing) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), ἐφοβήθη (he feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude), ὅτι (because) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (him) εἶχον (they were holding). ⁶ Γενεσίοις (The birthday) δὲ (now) γενομένοις (having been celebrated) τοῦ (-) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod), ὠρχήσατο (danced) ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) τῆς (-) Ἡρῳδιάδος (of Herodias) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μέσῳ (midst), καὶ (and) ἤρεσεν (pleased) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (Herod), ⁷ ὅθεν (whereupon) μεθ’ (with) ὅρκου (oath) ὡμολόγησεν (he promised) αὐτῇ (to her) δοῦναι (to give) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτήσηται (she should ask). ⁸ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) προβιβασθεῖσα (having been urged on) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτῆς (of her), “Δός (Give) μοι (me),” φησίν (she says), “Ὧδε (here) ἐπὶ (upon) πίνακι (a platter) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist).” ⁹ Καὶ (And) λυπηθεὶς (having been grieved) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king), διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) ὅρκους (oaths) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) συνανακειμένους (reclining with him), ἐκέλευσεν (he commanded it) δοθῆναι (to be given). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) πέμψας (he having sent), ἀπεκεφάλισεν (beheaded) ‹τὸν› (-) Ἰωάννην (John) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison).

⁵ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀμελήσαντες (having paid no attention) ἀπῆλθον (they went away), ὃς (one) μὲν (-) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) ἴδιον (own) ἀγρόν (field), ὃς (one) δὲ (then) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) ἐμπορίαν (business) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹ Τότε (Then) ὁμοιωθήσεται (will be likened) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) δέκα (to ten) παρθένοις (virgins), αἵτινες (who) λαβοῦσαι (having taken) τὰς (the) λαμπάδας (lamps) ἑαυτῶν (of them), ἐξῆλθον (went forth) εἰς (to) ὑπάντησιν (meet) τοῦ (the) νυμφίου (bridegroom). ² πέντε (Five) δὲ (now) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἦσαν (were) μωραὶ (foolish), καὶ (and) πέντε (five) φρόνιμοι (wise). ³ αἱ (The) γὰρ (for) μωραὶ (foolish), λαβοῦσαι (having taken) τὰς (the) λαμπάδας (lamps) ‹αὐτῶν› (of them), οὐκ (not) ἔλαβον (did take) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (them) ἔλαιον (oil); ⁴ αἱ (-) δὲ (but) φρόνιμοι (the wise) ἔλαβον (took) ἔλαιον (oil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἀγγείοις (vessels), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) λαμπάδων (lamps) ἑαυτῶν (of them). ⁵ χρονίζοντος (Tarrying) δὲ (then) τοῦ (the) νυμφίου (bridegroom), ἐνύσταξαν (they became drowsy) πᾶσαι (all) καὶ (and) ἐκάθευδον (were sleeping). ⁶ Μέσης (At middle) δὲ (then) νυκτὸς (of the night), κραυγὴ (a cry) γέγονεν (there was): ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) νυμφίος (bridegroom)! ἐξέρχεσθε (Go forth) εἰς (to) ἀπάντησιν (meet) ‹αὐτοῦ› (him)!’ ⁷ Τότε (Then) ἠγέρθησαν (arose) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) παρθένοι (virgins) ἐκεῖναι (those) καὶ (and) ἐκόσμησαν (trimmed) τὰς (the) λαμπάδας (lamps) ἑαυτῶν (of them). ⁸ αἱ (-) δὲ (And) μωραὶ (the foolish) ταῖς (to the) φρονίμοις (wise) εἶπαν (said), ‘Δότε (Give) ἡμῖν (us) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ἐλαίου (oil) ὑμῶν (of you), ὅτι (for) αἱ (the) λαμπάδες (lamps) ἡμῶν (of us) σβέννυνται (are going out).’ ⁹ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) δὲ (then) αἱ (the) φρόνιμοι (wise), λέγουσαι (saying), ‘Μή¦Ποτε (Lest) οὐ (no) μὴ (not even) ἀρκέσῃ (it might suffice) ἡμῖν (for us) καὶ (and) ὑμῖν (you). πορεύεσθε (Go) μᾶλλον (rather) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling), καὶ (and) ἀγοράσατε (buy) ἑαυταῖς (for yourselves).’ ¹⁰ Ἀπερχομένων (While are going away) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (they) ἀγοράσαι (to buy), ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (the) νυμφίος (bridegroom), καὶ (and) αἱ (those) ἕτοιμοι (ready) εἰσῆλθον (went in) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast); καὶ (and) ἐκλείσθη (was shut) ἡ (the) θύρα (door).

³¹ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), τότε (then) καθίσει (He will sit) ἐπὶ (upon the) θρόνου (throne) δόξης (of glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³² καὶ (And) συναχθήσονται (will be gathered) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), καὶ (and) ἀφορίσει (He will separate) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀπ’ (from) ἀλλήλων (one another), ὥσπερ (as) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ἀφορίζει (separates) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐρίφων (goats). ³³ καὶ (And) στήσει (He will set) τὰ (-) μὲν (indeed) πρόβατα (the sheep) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὰ (-) δὲ (and) ἐρίφια (the goats) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left). ³⁴ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will say) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τοῖς (to those) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Δεῦτε (Come), οἱ (those) εὐλογημένοι (being blessed) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), κληρονομήσατε (inherit) τὴν (the) ἡτοιμασμένην (having been prepared) ὑμῖν (for you) βασιλείαν (kingdom) ἀπὸ (from the) καταβολῆς (foundation) κόσμου (of the world). ³⁵ ἐπείνασα (I hungered) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) ἐδώκατέ (you gave) μοι (Me) φαγεῖν (to eat); ἐδίψησα (I thirsted), καὶ (and) ἐποτίσατέ (you gave to drink) με (me); ξένος (a stranger) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) συνηγάγετέ (you took in) με (Me); ³⁶ γυμνὸς (naked), καὶ (and) περιεβάλετέ (you clothed) με (Me); ἠσθένησα (I was sick), καὶ (and) ἐπεσκέψασθέ (you visited) με (Me); ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) ἤλθατε (you came) πρός (to) με (Me).’ ³⁷ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσονται (will answer) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) δίκαιοι (righteous), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), πότε (when) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) πεινῶντα (hungering), καὶ (and) ἐθρέψαμεν (fed You)? ἢ (Or) διψῶντα (thirsting), καὶ (and) ἐποτίσαμεν (gave You to drink)? ³⁸ πότε (When) δέ (now) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) ξένον (a stranger), καὶ (and) συνηγάγομεν (took You in)? ἢ (Or) γυμνὸν (naked), καὶ (and) περιεβάλομεν (clothed You)? ³⁹ πότε (When) δέ (now) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) ἀσθενοῦντα (ailing) ἢ (or) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) ἤλθομεν (came) πρός (to) σε (You)?’ ⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐρεῖ (will say) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐφ’ (to the extent) ὅσον (as much as) ἐποιήσατε (you did it) ἑνὶ (to one) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) μου (of Me) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least), ἐμοὶ (to Me) ἐποιήσατε (you did it).’ ⁴¹ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will He say) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to those) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), ‘Πορεύεσθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ‹οἱ› (those) κατηραμένοι (being cursed), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal), τὸ (-) ἡτοιμασμένον (having been prepared) τῷ (for the) διαβόλῳ (devil) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him). ⁴² ἐπείνασα (I hungered) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἐδώκατέ (you gave) μοι (to Me) φαγεῖν (to eat); (καὶ) (and) ἐδίψησα (I thirsted), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἐποτίσατέ (You gave to drink) με (Me); ⁴³ ξένος (a stranger) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) συνηγάγετέ (You took in) με (Me); γυμνὸς (naked), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) περιεβάλετέ (you did clothe) με (Me); ἀσθενὴς (sick) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπεσκέψασθέ (did you visit) με (Me).’ ⁴⁴ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσονται (will answer) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), πότε (when) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) πεινῶντα (hungering), ἢ (or) διψῶντα (thirsting), ἢ (or) ξένον (a stranger), ἢ (or) γυμνὸν (naked), ἢ (or) ἀσθενῆ (sick), ἢ (or) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) διηκονήσαμέν (did minister) σοι (to You)?’ ⁴⁵ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσεται (will He answer) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐφ’ (to the extent) ὅσον (that) οὐκ (not) ἐποιήσατε (you did it) ἑνὶ (to one) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least), οὐδὲ (neither) ἐμοὶ (to Me) ἐποιήσατε (did you).’ ⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) ἀπελεύσονται (will go away) οὗτοι (these) εἰς (into) κόλασιν (punishment) αἰώνιον (eternal); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) δίκαιοι (the righteous) εἰς (into) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).”

¹⁸ ἔλεγεν (Had been saying) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (to Herod) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔξεστίν (it is lawful) σοι (for you) ἔχειν (to have) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) σου (of you).” ¹⁹ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῳδιὰς (Herodias) ἐνεῖχεν (held it) αὐτῷ (against him), καὶ (and) ἤθελεν (wished) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠδύνατο (was able); ²⁰ ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ἐφοβεῖτο (was afraid of) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John), εἰδὼς (knowing) αὐτὸν (him) ἄνδρα (to be a man) δίκαιον (righteous) καὶ (and) ἅγιον (holy); καὶ (and) συνετήρει (he kept safe) αὐτόν (him). καὶ (And) ἀκούσας (having heard) αὐτοῦ (him), πολλὰ (greatly) ἠπόρει (he was perplexed) καὶ (and) ἡδέως (gladly) αὐτοῦ (him) ἤκουεν (heard). ²¹ Καὶ (And) γενομένης (having come) ἡμέρας (a day) εὐκαίρου (opportune), ὅτε (when) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) τοῖς (on the) γενεσίοις (birthday) αὐτοῦ (of him) δεῖπνον (a banquet) ἐποίησεν (made) τοῖς (to the) μεγιστᾶσιν (great men) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) χιλιάρχοις (chief captains), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) πρώτοις (leading men) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), ²² καὶ (and) εἰσελθούσης (having come in) τῆς (the) θυγατρὸς (daughter) αὐτῆς (of herself) τῆς (-) Ἡρῳδιάδος (Herodias), καὶ (and) ὀρχησαμένης (having danced), ἤρεσεν (pleased) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (Herod) καὶ (and) τοῖς (those) συνανακειμένοις (reclining with him). «ὁ (-) 〈δὲ〉 (And) βασιλεὺς» (the king) εἶπεν (said) τῷ (to the) κορασίῳ (girl), “Αἴτησόν (Ask) με (me) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃς (you wish), καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you).” ²³ καὶ (And) ὤμοσεν (he swore) αὐτῇ (to her), “[Πολλά] (Whatever) Ὅ¦τι (that) ἐάν (if) με (me) αἰτήσῃς (you might ask), δώσω (I will give) σοι (you), ἕως (up to) ἡμίσους (half) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) μου (of me).” ²⁴ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθοῦσα (having gone out), εἶπεν (she said) τῇ (to the) μητρὶ (mother) αὐτῆς (of her), “Τί (What) αἰτήσωμαι (shall I ask)?” Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said), “Τὴν (The) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the one) Βαπτίζοντος (baptizing).”

²⁴ “Ἀγωνίζεσθε (Strive) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) στενῆς (narrow) θύρας (door); ὅτι (for) πολλοί (many), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ζητήσουσιν (will seek) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσουσιν (will be able). ²⁵ ἀφ’ (From) οὗ (what) ἂν (-) ἐγερθῇ (shall have risen up) ὁ (the) οἰκοδεσπότης (master of the house), καὶ (and) ἀποκλείσῃ (shall have shut) τὴν (the) θύραν (door), καὶ (then) ἄρξησθε (you should begin) ἔξω (outside) ἑστάναι (to stand) καὶ (and) κρούειν (to knock) τὴν (at the) θύραν (door), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), ἄνοιξον (open) ἡμῖν (to us).’ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (he answering), ἐρεῖ (will say) ὑμῖν (to you), ‘Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I do know) ὑμᾶς (you), πόθεν (from where) ἐστέ (are).’

²⁶ Καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Νῶε (of Noah), οὕτως (thus) ἔσται (will it be) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (man): ²⁷ ἤσθιον (They were eating), ἔπινον (they were drinking), ἐγάμουν (they were marrying), ἐγαμίζοντο (they were being given in marriage), ἄχρι (until) ἧς (that) ἡμέρας (day) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Νῶε (Noah) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κιβωτόν (ark), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (the) κατακλυσμὸς (flood) καὶ (and) ἀπώλεσεν (destroyed) πάντας (all). ²⁸ Ὁμοίως (Likewise), καθὼς (as) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Λώτ (of Lot), ἤσθιον (they were eating), ἔπινον (they were drinking), ἠγόραζον (they were buying), ἐπώλουν (they were selling), ἐφύτευον (they were planting), ᾠκοδόμουν (they were building); ²⁹ ᾗ (in that) δὲ (then) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) Λὼτ (Lot) ἀπὸ (from) Σοδόμων (Sodom), ἔβρεξεν (it rained) πῦρ (fire) καὶ (and) θεῖον (brimstone) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) ἀπώλεσεν (destroyed) πάντας (all).

⁸ Καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come), ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐλέγξει (will convict) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) περὶ (concerning) ἁμαρτίας (sin), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) κρίσεως (judgment):

³⁷ Ἀκούσαντες (Having heard) δὲ (then), κατενύγησαν (they were pierced) τὴν (to the) καρδίαν (heart); εἶπόν (they said) τε (then) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) λοιποὺς (other) ἀποστόλους (apostles), “Τί (What) ποιήσωμεν (shall we do), ἄνδρες (men), ἀδελφοί (brothers)?”

⁶ ἀλλὰ (But) ἀνάστηθι (rise up) καὶ (and) εἴσελθε (enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), καὶ (and) λαληθήσεταί (it will be told) σοι (you) ὅ (that) τί (what) σε (you) δεῖ (it behooves) ποιεῖν (to do).”

⁴² καὶ (And) παρήγγειλεν (He instructed) ἡμῖν (us) κηρύξαι (to proclaim) τῷ (to the) λαῷ (people) καὶ (and) διαμαρτύρασθαι (to testify fully) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) ὡρισμένος (having been appointed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) Κριτὴς (as judge) ζώντων (of living) καὶ (and) νεκρῶν (dead).

²⁹ Αἰτήσας (Having called for) δὲ (now) φῶτα (lights), εἰσεπήδησεν (he rushed in), καὶ (and) ἔντρομος (terrified) γενόμενος (having become), προσέπεσεν (he fell down before) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul) καὶ (and) ‹τῷ› (-) Σιλᾷ (Silas). ³⁰ καὶ (And) προαγαγὼν (having brought) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔξω (out) ἔφη (he was saying), “Κύριοι (Sirs), τί (what) με (of me) δεῖ (is necessary) ποιεῖν (to do), ἵνα (that) σωθῶ (I may be saved)?” ³¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Πίστευσον (Believe) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) σωθήσῃ (you will be saved), σὺ (you) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) οἶκός (household) σου (of you).” ³² καὶ (And) ἐλάλησαν (they spoke) αὐτῷ (to him) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου* (Lord), σὺν (along with) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) αὐτοῦ (of him). ³³ καὶ (And) παραλαβὼν (having taken) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour) τῆς (of the) νυκτὸς (night), ἔλουσεν (he washed them) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πληγῶν (wounds); καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίσθη (he was baptized), αὐτὸς (he) καὶ (and) οἱ (the household) αὐτοῦ (of him) πάντες* (all) παραχρῆμα (immediately). ³⁴ ἀναγαγών (Having brought) τε (then) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house), παρέθηκεν (he laid) τράπεζαν (a table for them), καὶ (and) ἠγαλλιάσατο (rejoiced) πανοικεὶ (with all his household), πεπιστευκὼς (having believed) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (in God).

¹³ Ὡς (When) δὲ (however) ἔγνωσαν (knew) οἱ (those) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Θεσσαλονίκης (Thessalonica) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Βεροίᾳ (Berea) κατηγγέλη (was proclaimed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἦλθον (they came) κἀκεῖ (there also), σαλεύοντες (stirring up) καὶ (and) ταράσσοντες (agitating) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds).

³² Ἀκούσαντες (Having heard of) δὲ (now) ἀνάστασιν (a resurrection) νεκρῶν (of the dead), οἱ (some) μὲν (indeed) ἐχλεύαζον (began to mock him); οἱ (some) δὲ (however) εἶπαν (said), “Ἀκουσόμεθά (We will hear) σου (you) περὶ (concerning) τούτου (this) καὶ (also) πάλιν (again).”

¹⁵ ἐλπίδα (a hope) ἔχων (having) εἰς (in) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God) ἣν (which) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) οὗτοι (themselves) προσδέχονται (await), ἀνάστασιν (that a resurrection) μέλλειν (there is about) ἔσεσθαι (to be) δικαίων (of the just) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἀδίκων (of the unjust).

²⁶ ἅμα (At the same time) καὶ (also), ἐλπίζων (he is hoping) ὅτι (that) χρήματα (riches) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῷ (him) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul). διὸ (Therefore) καὶ (also) πυκνότερον (often) αὐτὸν (him) μεταπεμπόμενος (sending for), ὡμίλει (he was talking) αὐτῷ (with him).

²⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (Then) Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) πρὸς (said to) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul), “Ἐν (Within) ὀλίγῳ (so little) με (me) πείθεις (do you persuade) Χριστιανὸν (a Christian) ποιῆσαι (to become)?”

¹⁶ ἐν (on) 〈ᾗ〉 (that) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ‹ὅτε› (when) κρίνει (will judge) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (secrets) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιόν (gospel) μου (of me), διὰ (by) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹⁹ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ὅσα (whatever) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) λέγει (says), τοῖς (to those) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) λαλεῖ (it speaks), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (every) στόμα (mouth) φραγῇ (may be stopped), καὶ (and) ὑπόδικος (under judgment) γένηται (may be) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ²⁰ διότι (Therefore) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) οὐ (not) δικαιωθήσεται (will be justified) πᾶσα (any) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him); διὰ (through) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law) ἐπίγνωσις (is knowledge) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (through) τῶν (the) οἰκτιρμῶν (compassions) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), παραστῆσαι (to present) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) ζῶσαν (living), ἁγίαν (holy), «τῷ (-) Θεῷ» (to God) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing), τὴν (which is) λογικὴν (the reasonable) λατρείαν (service) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹² Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἕκαστος (each) ἡμῶν (of us) περὶ (concerning) ἑαυτοῦ (himself), λόγον (account) δώσει (will give) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

⁵ Ὥστε (So then), μὴ (not) πρὸ (before the) καιροῦ (time) τι (anything) κρίνετε (judge), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἔλθῃ (shall have come) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), ὃς (who) καὶ (both) φωτίσει (will bring to light) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness), καὶ (and) φανερώσει (will make manifest) τὰς (the) βουλὰς (motives) τῶν (of the) καρδιῶν (hearts); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ὁ (the) ἔπαινος (praise) γενήσεται (will come) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

²⁴ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) πάντες (all) προφητεύωσιν (prophesy), εἰσέλθῃ (should come in) δέ (then) τις (some) ἄπιστος (unbeliever) ἢ (or) ἰδιώτης (uninstructed), ἐλέγχεται (he is convicted) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all), ἀνακρίνεται (he is examined) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all), ²⁵ τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (secrets) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) φανερὰ (manifest) γίνεται (become). καὶ (And) οὕτως (thus) πεσὼν (having fallen) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (his face), προσκυνήσει (he will worship) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ἀπαγγέλλων (declaring) ὅτι (that) Ὄντως (certainly) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is).

¹⁰ τοὺς (-) γὰρ (For) πάντας (all) ἡμᾶς (of us) φανερωθῆναι (to be revealed) δεῖ (it behooves) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ἵνα (that) κομίσηται (may receive back) ἕκαστος (each) τὰ (the things done) διὰ (in) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body), πρὸς (according to) ἃ (what) ἔπραξεν (he did), εἴτε (whether) ἀγαθὸν (good) εἴτε (or) φαῦλον (evil).

² λέγει (He says) γάρ (for): “Καιρῷ (In a time) δεκτῷ (acceptable) ἐπήκουσά (I listened to) σου (you), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (a day) σωτηρίας (of salvation) ἐβοήθησά (I helped) σοι (you).” Ἰδοὺ (Behold), νῦν (now) καιρὸς (is the time) εὐπρόσδεκτος (of favor); ἰδοὺ (behold), νῦν (now) ἡμέρα (is the day) σωτηρίας (of salvation).

²² ἀλλὰ (but) συνέκλεισεν (imprisoned) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ὑπὸ (under) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise), ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (from Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δοθῇ (might be given) τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing).

²³ πραΰτης (gentleness), ἐγκράτεια (self-control); κατὰ (against) τῶν (things) τοιούτων (such), οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law).

⁷ καὶ (and) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (-) θλιβομένοις (being oppressed), ἄνεσιν (repose) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) ἀποκαλύψει (revelation) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), μετ’ (with) ἀγγέλων (the angels) δυνάμεως (mighty) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ⁸ ἐν (in) πυρὶ (a fire) φλογός (of flame), διδόντος (inflicting) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) τοῖς (on those) μὴ (not) εἰδόσιν (knowing) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) τοῖς (on those) μὴ (not) ὑπακούουσιν (obeying) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ⁹ οἵτινες (who) δίκην (the penalty) τίσουσιν (will suffer) ὄλεθρον (of destruction) αἰώνιον (eternal), ἀπὸ (away from) προσώπου (the presence) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τῆς (of the) ἰσχύος (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ¹⁰ ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (He shall come) ἐνδοξασθῆναι (to be glorified) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) θαυμασθῆναι (to be marveled at) ἐν (among) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (those) πιστεύσασιν (having believed), ὅτι (because) ἐπιστεύθη (was believed) τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐφ’ (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that),

¹ Διαμαρτύρομαι (I earnestly declare) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τοῦ (the One) μέλλοντος (being about) κρίνειν (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead), καὶ (and) τὴν (by the) ἐπιφάνειαν (appearing) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him):

¹¹ Ἐπεφάνη (Has appeared) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), σωτήριος (bringing salvation) πᾶσιν (to all) ἀνθρώποις (men), ¹² παιδεύουσα (instructing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἵνα (that), ἀρνησάμενοι (having denied) τὴν (-) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) τὰς (-) κοσμικὰς (worldly) ἐπιθυμίας (passions), σωφρόνως (discreetly) καὶ (and) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ζήσωμεν (we should live) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age),

⁷ Διό (Therefore), καθὼς (just as) λέγει (says) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy): “Σήμερον (Today) ἐὰν (if) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀκούσητε (you should hear), ⁸ μὴ (not) σκληρύνητε (harden) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ὡς (as) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) παραπικρασμῷ (rebellion), κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day) τοῦ (-) πειρασμοῦ (of testing) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness),

¹³ ἀλλὰ (But) παρακαλεῖτε (encourage) ἑαυτοὺς (other) καθ’ (each) ἑκάστην (every) ἡμέραν (day), ἄχρις (while) οὗ (-) τὸ (-) Σήμερον (today) καλεῖται (it is called), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκληρυνθῇ (may be hardened) τις (one) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἀπάτῃ (by the deceitfulness) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

¹ Φοβηθῶμεν (We should fear) οὖν (therefore), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) καταλειπομένης (left remaining), ἐπαγγελίας (of the promise) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κατάπαυσιν (rest) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δοκῇ (should seem) τις (any) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ὑστερηκέναι (to have fallen short).

¹¹ Σπουδάσωμεν (We should be diligent) οὖν (therefore) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) κατάπαυσιν (rest), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) τις (anyone) ὑποδείγματι (example) πέσῃ (should fall) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience). ¹² Ζῶν (Living is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἐνεργὴς (active), καὶ (and) τομώτερος (sharper) ὑπὲρ (than) πᾶσαν (any) μάχαιραν (sword) δίστομον (two-edged), καὶ (even) διϊκνούμενος (penetrating) ἄχρι (as far as) μερισμοῦ (the division) ψυχῆς (of soul) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἁρμῶν (of joints) τε (and) καὶ (also) μυελῶν (marrows), καὶ (and) κριτικὸς (able to judge) ἐνθυμήσεων (the thoughts) καὶ (and) ἐννοιῶν (intentions) καρδίας (of the heart).

² βαπτισμῶν (about baptisms) διδαχὴν (instruction), ἐπιθέσεώς (of laying on) τε (then) χειρῶν (of hands), ἀναστάσεώς (of the resurrection) ‹τε› (both) νεκρῶν (of the dead) καὶ (and) κρίματος (of judgment) αἰωνίου (eternal).

²⁷ Καὶ (And) καθ’ (in) ὅσον (as much as) ἀπόκειται (it is apportioned) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men) ἅπαξ (once) ἀποθανεῖν (to die), μετὰ (after) δὲ (then) τοῦτο (this) κρίσις (to face judgment),

²¹ καί (And) οὕτω (so) φοβερὸν (fearful) ἦν (was) τὸ (the thing) φανταζόμενον (appearing that) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) εἶπεν (said), “Ἔκφοβός (Greatly afraid) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) ἔντρομος (trembling).”

¹⁹ σὺ (You) πιστεύεις (believe) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). καλῶς (Well) ποιεῖς (you are doing)! καὶ (Even) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons) πιστεύουσιν (believe that), καὶ (and) φρίσσουσιν (shudder)!

¹³ Ἄγε (Come) νῦν (now), οἱ (those) λέγοντες (saying), “Σήμερον (Today) ἢ (or) αὔριον (tomorrow) πορευσόμεθα (we will go) εἰς (into) τήνδε (such) τὴν (-) πόλιν (city), καὶ (and) ποιήσομεν (will spend) ἐκεῖ (there) ἐνιαυτὸν (a year), καὶ (and) ἐμπορευσόμεθα (will trade), καὶ (and) κερδήσομεν (will make a profit),” ¹⁴ οἵτινες (who) οὐκ (not) ἐπίστασθε (know) ‹τὸ› (what is) τῆς (on the) αὔριον (next day is). ποία (What is) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you)? ἀτμὶς (A vapor) γάρ (just) ἐστε (it is), ἡ (-) πρὸς (for) ὀλίγον (a little while) φαινομένη (appearing), ἔπειτα (then) καὶ (also) ἀφανιζομένη (vanishing).

¹⁵ Κύριον (As Lord) δὲ (however), τὸν (-) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἁγιάσατε (sanctify) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ἕτοιμοι (ready) ἀεὶ (always) πρὸς (for) ἀπολογίαν (a defense) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) αἰτοῦντι (asking) ὑμᾶς (you) λόγον (an account) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἐλπίδος (hope); ἀλλὰ (yet) μετὰ (with) πραΰτητος (gentleness) καὶ (and) φόβου (fear),

⁴ Ἐν (With respect to) ᾧ (this) ξενίζονται (they think it strange), μὴ (not) συντρεχόντων (running with them) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) τῆς (-) ἀσωτίας (of debauchery) ἀνάχυσιν (overflow), βλασφημοῦντες (speaking evil of you), ⁵ οἳ (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give) λόγον (account) τῷ (to Him who) ἑτοίμως (ready) ἔχοντι (is) κρῖναι (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead).

⁶ ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) γνώσει (knowledge) τὴν (-) ἐγκράτειαν (self-control), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ἐγκρατείᾳ (self-control) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (endurance), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness),

⁷ Τεκνία (Little children), μηδεὶς (no one) πλανάτω (let lead astray) ὑμᾶς (you); ὁ (the one) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (is), καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (He) δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (is).

¹⁰ ἐν (Through) τούτῳ (this) φανερά (manifest) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil): πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) μὴ (not) ποιῶν (practicing) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), καὶ (and also) ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) θρόνον (a throne) μέγαν (great) λευκὸν (white), καὶ (and) τὸν (the One) καθήμενον (sitting) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (it), οὗ (whose) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) προσώπου (face) ἔφυγεν (fled) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) οὐρανός (heaven), καὶ (and) τόπος (place) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) αὐτοῖς (for them). ¹² καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) τοὺς (the) νεκρούς (dead), τοὺς (-) μεγάλους (great) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) μικρούς (small), ἑστῶτας (standing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne), καὶ (and) βιβλία (books) ἠνοίχθησαν (were opened). Καὶ (And) ἄλλο (another) βιβλίον (book) ἠνοίχθη (was opened), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (the one) ζωῆς (of life). καὶ (And) ἐκρίθησαν (were judged) οἱ (the) νεκροὶ (dead) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the things) γεγραμμένων (having been written) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) βιβλίοις (books), κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them). ¹³ καὶ (And) ἔδωκεν (gave up) ἡ (the) θάλασσα (sea) τοὺς (the) νεκροὺς (dead) τοὺς (who were) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it); καὶ (and) ὁ (-) θάνατος (Death) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) ᾅδης (Hades) ἔδωκαν (gave up) τοὺς (the) νεκροὺς (dead) τοὺς (who were) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them); καὶ (and) ἐκρίθησαν (they were judged) ἕκαστος (each of them) κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτῶν (of them). ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) θάνατος (Death) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) ᾅδης (Hades) ἐβλήθησαν (were cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire). οὗτος (This) ὁ (the) θάνατος (death) ὁ (-) δεύτερός (second) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) λίμνη (lake) τοῦ (of) πυρός (fire). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βίβλῳ (book) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) γεγραμμένος (having been written), ἐβλήθη (he was cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire).
