⁵ Εὑρόντες (Having found) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (man) τοῦτον (this) λοιμὸν (a pest), καὶ (and) κινοῦντα (stirring) στάσεις (insurrection) πᾶσιν (among all) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) τοῖς (-) κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world), πρωτοστάτην (a leader) τε (then) τῆς (of the) τῶν (of the) Ναζωραίων (Nazarenes) αἱρέσεως (sect),

²³ καὶ (and) ἐλθὼν (having come), κατῴκησεν (he dwelt) εἰς (in) πόλιν (a city) λεγομένην (being called) Ναζαρέτ (Nazareth); ὅπως (so that) πληρωθῇ (it should be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (through) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets), ὅτι (that) “Ναζωραῖος (A Nazarene) κληθήσεται (He will be called).”

¹¹ Μακάριοί (Blessed) ἐστε (are you) ὅταν (when) ὀνειδίσωσιν (they shall insult) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) διώξωσιν (shall persecute you), καὶ (and) εἴπωσιν (shall say) πᾶν (all kinds of) πονηρὸν (evil) καθ’ (against) ὑμῶν (you), ψευδόμενοι (lying) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me). ¹² χαίρετε (Rejoice) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (exult), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολὺς (is great) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) τοὺς (-) πρὸ (before) ὑμῶν (you).

²⁵ ἀρκετὸν (It is sufficient) τῷ (for the) μαθητῇ (disciple) ἵνα (that) γένηται (he become) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him). εἰ (If) τὸν (the) οἰκοδεσπότην (master of the house) Βεελζεβοὺλ (Beelzebul) ἐπεκάλεσαν (they called), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τοὺς (those) οἰκιακοὺς (house members) αὐτοῦ (of him)!

² ἤρξαντο (They began) δὲ (then) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Τοῦτον (This man) εὕραμεν (we found) διαστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) κωλύοντα (forbidding) φόρους (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) διδόναι (to be given), καὶ (and) λέγοντα (declaring) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) Χριστὸν (Christ), βασιλέα (a king), εἶναι (to be).”

⁵ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπίσχυον (they kept insisting), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἀνασείει (He stirs up) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people), διδάσκων (teaching) καθ’ (throughout) ὅλης (all) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), καὶ (and) ἀρξάμενος (He has begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) ἕως (even to) ὧδε (here).”

¹⁹ ὅστις (who) ἦν (was) διὰ (on account of) στάσιν (insurrection) τινὰ (a certain) γενομένην (having been made) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city), καὶ (and) φόνον (murder), βληθεὶς (having been cast) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison).

²⁵ ἀπέλυσεν (He released) δὲ (then) τὸν (the one) διὰ (on account of) στάσιν (insurrection) καὶ (and) φόνον (murder) βεβλημένον (having been cast) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ὃν (whom) ᾐτοῦντο (they had asked for); τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) τῷ (to the) θελήματι (will) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹⁷ Ἀναστὰς (Having risen up) δὲ (however) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (him), ἡ (-) οὖσα (being) αἵρεσις (the sect) τῶν (of the) Σαδδουκαίων (Sadducees), ἐπλήσθησαν (were filled) ζήλου (with jealousy),

¹³ Ἔστησάν (They set) τε (also) μάρτυρας (witnesses) ψευδεῖς (false), λέγοντας (saying), “Ὁ (The) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), οὐ (not) παύεται (does stop) λαλῶν (speaking) ῥήματα (words) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τοῦ (-) ἁγίου (holy) [τούτου] (this) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law);

⁵ Ἐξανέστησαν (Rose up) δέ (now) τινες (certain) τῶν (of those) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) αἱρέσεως (sect) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) πεπιστευκότες (who believed), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Δεῖ (It is necessary) περιτέμνειν (to circumcise) αὐτοὺς (them), παραγγέλλειν (to command them) τε (then) τηρεῖν (to keep) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses).”

²⁰ καὶ (and) προσαγαγόντες (having brought up) αὐτοὺς (them) τοῖς (to the) στρατηγοῖς (magistrates), εἶπαν (they said), “Οὗτοι (These) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) ἐκταράσσουσιν (exceedingly trouble) ἡμῶν (of us) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ὑπάρχοντες (being), ²¹ καὶ (and) καταγγέλλουσιν (preach) ἔθη (customs), ἃ (that) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) ἡμῖν (for us) παραδέχεσθαι (to accept) οὐδὲ (nor) ποιεῖν (to practice), Ῥωμαίοις (Romans) οὖσιν (being).”

⁶ μὴ (Not) εὑρόντες (having found) δὲ (however) αὐτοὺς (them), ἔσυρον (they dragged) Ἰάσονα (Jason) καί (and) τινας (certain) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) ἐπὶ (before) τοὺς (the) πολιτάρχας (city authorities), βοῶντες (crying out) ὅτι (-), “Οἱ (The ones) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world) ἀναστατώσαντες (having upset), οὗτοι (these) καὶ (also) ἐνθάδε (here) πάρεισιν (are come), ⁷ οὓς (whom) ὑποδέδεκται (has received) Ἰάσων (Jason). καὶ (And) οὗτοι (these) πάντες (all), ἀπέναντι (contrary to) τῶν (the) δογμάτων (decrees) Καίσαρος (of Caesar) πράσσουσι* (do), βασιλέα (king) ἕτερον (another) λέγοντες (proclaiming) εἶναι (to be): Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).”

²⁸ κράζοντες (crying out), “Ἄνδρες (Men), Ἰσραηλῖται (Israelites), βοηθεῖτε (help)! οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) ὁ (who) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τούτου (this) πάντας (all those) πανταχῇ (everywhere) διδάσκων (teaching); ἔτι (besides) τε (and) καὶ (also) Ἕλληνας (Greeks) εἰσήγαγεν (he has brought) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) καὶ (and) κεκοίνωκεν (defiled) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) τόπον (place) τοῦτον (this).”

²² Ἤκουον (They were listening) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (to him) ἄχρι (until) τούτου (this) τοῦ (-) λόγου (word), καὶ (and) ἐπῆραν (they lifted up) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγοντες (saying), “Αἶρε (Away with) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), τὸν (the) τοιοῦτον (such). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) καθῆκεν (it is fit) αὐτὸν (he) ζῆν (to live)!”

¹⁴ Ὁμολογῶ (I confess) δὲ (however) τοῦτό (this) σοι (to you), ὅτι (that) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) Ὁδὸν (Way) ἣν (which) λέγουσιν (they call) αἵρεσιν (a sect), οὕτως (so) λατρεύω (I serve) τῷ (the) πατρῴῳ (of our fathers) Θεῷ (God), πιστεύων (believing) πᾶσι (all things) τοῖς (-) κατὰ (throughout) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), καὶ (and) τοῖς (that) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) προφήταις (Prophets) γεγραμμένοις (have been written),

⁵ προγινώσκοντές (knowing) με (me) ἄνωθεν (from the first), ἐὰν (if) θέλωσι (they would be willing) μαρτυρεῖν (to testify), ὅτι (that) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἀκριβεστάτην (strictest) αἵρεσιν (sect) τῆς (-) ἡμετέρας (of our) θρησκείας (religion) ἔζησα (I lived as) Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee).

²² ἀξιοῦμεν (We deem it worthy) δὲ (however) παρὰ (from) σοῦ (you) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) ἃ (what) φρονεῖς (you think), περὶ (concerning) μὲν (truly) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) αἱρέσεως (sect) ταύτης (this), γνωστὸν (known) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐστιν (it is) ὅτι (that) πανταχοῦ (everywhere) ἀντιλέγεται (it is spoken against).”

¹³ δυσφημούμενοι (being slandered), παρακαλοῦμεν (we entreat). ὡς (As) περικαθάρματα (the scum) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (earth) ἐγενήθημεν (we have become), πάντων (of all the) περίψημα (refuse), ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now).

¹⁹ δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) καὶ (also) αἱρέσεις (factions) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (there to be), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) δόκιμοι (approved), φανεροὶ (evident) γένωνται (should become) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you).

¹² τὴν (the) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἔχοντες (keeping) καλήν (honorable), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (wherein) ᾧ (which) καταλαλοῦσιν (they speak against) ὑμῶν (you) ὡς (as) κακοποιῶν (evildoers), ἐκ (through) τῶν (the) καλῶν (good) ἔργων (deeds) ἐποπτεύοντες (having witnessed), δοξάσωσιν (they may glorify) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation). ¹³ Ὑποτάγητε (Be in subjection) πάσῃ (to every) ἀνθρωπίνῃ (human) κτίσει (institution) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), εἴτε (whether) βασιλεῖ (to the king) ὡς (as) ὑπερέχοντι (being supreme), ¹⁴ εἴτε (or) ἡγεμόσιν (to governors), ὡς (as) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) πεμπομένοις (being sent) εἰς (for) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) κακοποιῶν (to evildoers), ἔπαινον (praise) δὲ (then) ἀγαθοποιῶν (to well-doers), ¹⁵ ὅτι (because) οὕτως (this) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good), φιμοῦν (to put to silence) τὴν (the) τῶν (-) ἀφρόνων (of foolish) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἀγνωσίαν (ignorance),

¹⁹ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) χάρις (is acceptable), εἰ (if) διὰ (for sake of) συνείδησιν (conscience) Θεοῦ (toward God), ὑποφέρει (endures) τις (anyone) λύπας (griefs), πάσχων (suffering) ἀδίκως (unjustly).
