⁴⁰ Ἐπείσθησαν (They were persuaded) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (by him); καὶ (and) προσκαλεσάμενοι (having called in) τοὺς (the) ἀποστόλους (apostles), δείραντες (having beaten), παρήγγειλαν (they commanded them) μὴ (not) λαλεῖν (to speak) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπέλυσαν (released them).

¹⁷ Προσέχετε (Beware) δὲ (however) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); παραδώσουσιν (they will deliver) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) συνέδρια (courts), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them), μαστιγώσουσιν (they will flog) ὑμᾶς (you);

³⁴ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) σοφοὺς (wise men) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes). ἐξ (Some of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποκτενεῖτε (you will kill) καὶ (and) σταυρώσετε (will crucify), καὶ (and some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) μαστιγώσετε (you will flog) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) διώξετε (will persecute) ἀπὸ (from) πόλεως (town) εἰς (to) πόλιν (town);

⁹ Βλέπετε (Take heed) δὲ (however) ὑμεῖς (you) ἑαυτούς (to yourselves); παραδώσουσιν (they will betray) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (to) συνέδρια (courts) καὶ (and) εἰς (in) συναγωγὰς (synagogues); δαρήσεσθε (you will be beaten), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (before) ἡγεμόνων (governors) καὶ (and) βασιλέων (kings) σταθήσεσθε (you will stand) ἕνεκεν (because) ἐμοῦ (of Me), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) αὐτοῖς (to them).

¹⁰ καὶ (And) καιρῷ (in the season), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) γεωργοὺς (farmers) δοῦλον (a servant), ἵνα (that) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) καρποῦ (fruit) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) δώσουσιν (they will give) αὐτῷ (to him). οἱ (-) δὲ (But) γεωργοὶ (the farmers) ἐξαπέστειλαν (sent away) αὐτὸν (him), δείραντες (having beaten him), κενόν (empty-handed).

¹ Τότε (At that time) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἐμαστίγωσεν (flogged Him). ² καὶ (And) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), πλέξαντες (having twisted together) στέφανον (a crown) ἐξ (of) ἀκανθῶν (thorns), ἐπέθηκαν (put it on) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τῇ (the) κεφαλῇ (head), καὶ (and) ἱμάτιον (a robe) πορφυροῦν (purple) περιέβαλον (cast around) αὐτόν (Him), ³ καὶ (and) ἤρχοντο (they began coming up) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (saying), “Χαῖρε (Hail), ὁ (-) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)!” καὶ (And) ἐδίδοσαν (they kept giving) αὐτῷ (Him) ῥαπίσματα (blows with the palm). ⁴ Καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθεν (went forth) πάλιν (again) ἔξω (outside) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἴδε (Behold), ἄγω (I bring) ὑμῖν (to you) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔξω (out), ἵνα (so that) γνῶτε (you may know) ὅτι (that) οὐδεμίαν (no) αἰτίαν (guilt) εὑρίσκω (I find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).”

¹⁷ ἀλλ’ (But) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐπὶ (on) πλεῖον (further) διανεμηθῇ (it might spread) εἰς (among) τὸν (the) λαόν (people), ἀπειλησώμεθα (let us warn) αὐτοῖς (them) μηκέτι (no longer) λαλεῖν (to speak) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this) μηδενὶ (to no) ἀνθρώπων (man).” ¹⁸ Καὶ (And) καλέσαντες (having called) αὐτοὺς (them), παρήγγειλαν (they commanded them) ‹τὸ› (-) καθόλου (at all) μὴ (not) φθέγγεσθαι (to speak) μηδὲ (nor) διδάσκειν (to teach) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). ¹⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John) ἀποκριθέντες (answering), εἶπον (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Εἰ (Whether) δίκαιόν (right) ἐστιν (it is) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ὑμῶν (to you) ἀκούειν (to listen), μᾶλλον (rather) ἢ (than) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), κρίνατε (you must judge); ²⁰ οὐ (not) δυνάμεθα (are able) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we), ἃ (what) εἴδαμεν (we have seen) καὶ (and) ἠκούσαμεν (heard), μὴ (not) λαλεῖν (to speak).” ²¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) προσαπειλησάμενοι (having further threatened them), ἀπέλυσαν (they let go) αὐτούς (them), μηδὲν (nothing) εὑρίσκοντες (finding) τὸ (the) πῶς (how) κολάσωνται (they might punish) αὐτούς (them), διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λαόν (people), ὅτι (because) πάντες (all) ἐδόξαζον (were glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐπὶ (for) τῷ (that) γεγονότι (having happened);

²⁸ λέγων (saying), “[Οὐ] (Not) Παραγγελίᾳ (by a charge) παρηγγείλαμεν (we commanded) ὑμῖν (you) μὴ (not) διδάσκειν (to teach) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this)? καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), πεπληρώκατε (you have filled) τὴν (-) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) τῆς (with the) διδαχῆς (teaching) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) βούλεσθε (you intend) ἐπαγαγεῖν (to bring) ἐφ’ (upon) ἡμᾶς (us) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τούτου (this).”

²⁴ Ὑπὸ (From) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews) πεντάκις (five times) τεσσεράκοντα (forty lashes) παρὰ (minus) μίαν (one) ἔλαβον (I received).
