²⁴ Πᾶς (Everyone) οὖν (therefore), ὅστις (whoever) ἀκούει (hears) μου (My) τοὺς (-) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (does) αὐτούς (them), ὁμοιωθήσεται (will be like) ἀνδρὶ (a man) φρονίμῳ (wise), ὅστις (who) ᾠκοδόμησεν (built) αὐτοῦ (his) τὴν (-) οἰκίαν (house) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) πέτραν (rock). ²⁵ καὶ (And) κατέβη (came down) ἡ (the) βροχὴ (rain), καὶ (and) ἦλθον (came) οἱ (the) ποταμοὶ (torrents), καὶ (and) ἔπνευσαν (blew) οἱ (the) ἄνεμοι (winds), καὶ (and) προσέπεσαν (beat) τῇ (that) οἰκίᾳ (house) ἐκείνῃ (upon); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔπεσεν (it fell), τεθεμελίωτο (it had been founded) γὰρ (for) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) πέτραν (rock).

¹³ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) ὑπομείνας (having endured) εἰς (to the) τέλος (end), οὗτος (he) σωθήσεται (will be saved). ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) κηρυχθήσεται (there will be proclaimed) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) ἐν (in) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) οἰκουμένῃ (earth), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (nations); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἥξει (will come) τὸ (the) τέλος (end).

⁴⁸ ὅμοιός (Like) ἐστιν (he is) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man) οἰκοδομοῦντι (building) οἰκίαν (a house), ὃς (who) ἔσκαψεν (dug) καὶ (and) ἐβάθυνεν (deepened), καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (laid) θεμέλιον (a foundation) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) πέτραν (rock); πλημμύρης (a flood) δὲ (then) γενομένης (having come), προσέρηξεν (burst upon) ὁ (the) ποταμὸς (stream) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυσεν (was able) σαλεῦσαι (to shake) αὐτὴν (it), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) καλῶς (well) οἰκοδομῆσθαι (had been built) αὐτήν (it).

¹³ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) πέτρας (rock), οἳ (those who) ὅταν (when) ἀκούσωσιν (they hear), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) δέχονται (receive) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) οὗτοι (these) ῥίζαν (a root) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (have), οἳ (who) πρὸς (for) καιρὸν (a time) πιστεύουσιν (believe), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (time) πειρασμοῦ (of testing) ἀφίστανται (fall away). ¹⁴ Τὸ (That) δὲ (now) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns) πεσόν (having fallen), οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), καὶ (and) ὑπὸ (under) μεριμνῶν (cares), καὶ (and) πλούτου (riches), καὶ (and) ἡδονῶν (pleasures) τοῦ (-) βίου (of life), πορευόμενοι (moving along) συμπνίγονται (are choked), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) τελεσφοροῦσιν (do mature). ¹⁵ Τὸ (That) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καλῇ (good) γῇ (soil), οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) οἵτινες (those) ἐν (in) καρδίᾳ (a heart) καλῇ (worthy) καὶ (and) ἀγαθῇ (good), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) κατέχουσιν (keep it), καὶ (and) καρποφοροῦσιν (bring forth fruit) ἐν (by) ὑπομονῇ (perseverance).

³² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐδεήθην (begged) περὶ (for) σοῦ (you), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐκλίπῃ (may fail) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σου (of you); καὶ (and) σύ (you), ποτε (when) ἐπιστρέψας (you have turned back), στήρισον (strengthen) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) σου (of you).”

³⁰ Ταῦτα (These things) αὐτοῦ (of His) λαλοῦντος (speaking), πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him). ³¹ Ἔλεγεν (Was saying) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πεπιστευκότας (having believed) αὐτῷ (in Him) Ἰουδαίους (Jews), “Ἐὰν (If) ὑμεῖς (you) μείνητε (abide) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῷ (-) ἐμῷ (My), ἀληθῶς (truly) μαθηταί (disciples) μού (of Me) ἐστε (you are). ³² καὶ (And) γνώσεσθε (you will know) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐλευθερώσει (will set free) ὑμᾶς (you).”

⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned).

⁹ Καθὼς (As) ἠγάπησέν (has loved) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἠγάπησα (have loved). μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) τῇ (-) ἐμῇ (of Me). ¹⁰ ἐὰν (If) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) τηρήσητε (you keep), μενεῖτε (you will abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) μου (of Me), καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I), «τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου» (of Me) «τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς» (commandments) τετήρηκα (have kept), καὶ (and) μένω (I abide) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love).

¹⁷ ὅτι (for) κατηριθμημένος (numbered) ἦν (he was) ἐν (with) ἡμῖν (us), καὶ (and) ἔλαχεν (was allotted) τὸν (-) κλῆρον (a share) τῆς (of the) διακονίας (ministry) ταύτης (this).”

²⁵ λαβεῖν (to take) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τῆς (of the) διακονίας (ministry) ταύτης (this) καὶ (and) ἀποστολῆς (apostleship), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (which) παρέβη (turned aside) Ἰούδας (Judas) πορευθῆναι (to go) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τὸν (-) ἴδιον (own).”

⁵ Ἦσαν (Were) δὲ (now) εἰς (in) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) κατοικοῦντες (dwelling) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), ἄνδρες (men) εὐλαβεῖς (devout) ἀπὸ (from) παντὸς (every) ἔθνους (nation) τῶν (of those) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven).

¹² Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἐν (in) ἄλλῳ (other) οὐδενὶ (no one) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation), οὐδὲ (not) γὰρ (for) ὄνομά (name) ἐστιν (is there) ἕτερον (another) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) τὸ (-) δεδομένον (having been given) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐν (by) ᾧ (which) δεῖ (it behooves) σωθῆναι (to be saved) ἡμᾶς (us).”

²³ ὃς (who) παραγενόμενος (having come) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἐχάρη (rejoiced) καὶ (and) παρεκάλει (was exhorting) πάντας (all) τῇ (with) προθέσει (resolute purpose) τῆς (-) καρδίας (of heart) προσμένειν (to abide) (ἐν) (in) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord).

²² ἐπιστηρίζοντες (strengthening) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting them) ἐμμένειν (to continue) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) “Διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) θλίψεων (tribulations) δεῖ (it behooves) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

²⁴ ἀλλ’ (But) οὐδενὸς (not any) λόγου (account) ποιοῦμαι (I make) τὴν (my) ψυχὴν (life) τιμίαν (dear) ἐμαυτῷ (to myself), ὡς (so as) τελειῶσαι* (to finish) τὸν (the) δρόμον (course) μου (of me), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ἣν (that) ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διαμαρτύρασθαι (to testify fully) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁶ ἀλλὰ (But) ἀνάστηθι (rise up) καὶ (and) στῆθι (stand) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) σου (of you); εἰς (for this) τοῦτο (purpose) γὰρ (for) ὤφθην (I have appeared) σοι (to you), προχειρίσασθαί (to appoint) σε (you) ὑπηρέτην (a servant) καὶ (and) μάρτυρα (a witness) ὧν (of that which) τε (both) εἶδές (you have seen) με (of Me), ὧν (of the things in which) τε (then) ὀφθήσομαί (I will appear) σοι (to you),

⁷ τοῖς (to those who) μὲν (indeed) καθ’ (with) ὑπομονὴν (endurance) ἔργου (in work) ἀγαθοῦ (good), δόξαν (glory) καὶ (and) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) ἀφθαρσίαν (immortality) ζητοῦσιν (are seeking), ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal);

⁵ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἐλπὶς (hope) οὐ (not) καταισχύνει (does make us ashamed), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐκκέχυται (has been poured out) ἐν (into) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) διὰ (through) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), τοῦ (the One) δοθέντος (having been given) ἡμῖν (to us).

¹⁸ Ἀλλὰ (But) λέγω (I ask), μὴ (no) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (did they hear)? μενοῦνγε (Indeed): “Εἰς (Into) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) ἐξῆλθεν (has gone out) ὁ (the) φθόγγος (voice) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) πέρατα (ends) τῆς (of the) οἰκουμένης (world), τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) αὐτῶν (of them).”

¹⁶ εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναί (to be) με (me) λειτουργὸν (a minister) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), ἱερουργοῦντα (administering the sacred service) τὸ (of the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might become) ἡ (the) προσφορὰ (offering) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) εὐπρόσδεκτος (acceptable), ἡγιασμένη (having been sanctified) ἐν (in the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).

⁵ Τί (Who) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is) Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos)? τί (Who) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) Παῦλος (Paul)? διάκονοι (Servants) δι’ (through) ὧν (whom) ἐπιστεύσατε (you believed), καὶ (also) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἔδωκεν (has given)?

¹ Οὕτως (So) ἡμᾶς (us), λογιζέσθω (let regard) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ὡς (as) ὑπηρέτας (servants) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) καὶ (and) οἰκονόμους (stewards) μυστηρίων (of the mysteries) Θεοῦ (of God). ² ὧδε (In this case) λοιπὸν (moreover), ζητεῖται (it is required) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οἰκονόμοις (stewards), ἵνα (that) πιστός (faithful) τις (one) εὑρεθῇ (shall be found). ³ Ἐμοὶ (Me) δὲ (however) εἰς (to) ἐλάχιστόν (the smallest matter) ἐστιν (it is), ἵνα (that) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you) ἀνακριθῶ (I be examined), ἢ (or) ὑπὸ (by) ἀνθρωπίνης (a human) ἡμέρας (court). ἀλλ’ (In fact) οὐδὲ (neither) ἐμαυτὸν (myself) ἀνακρίνω (do I examine).

⁵⁸ Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me) ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ἑδραῖοι (steadfast) γίνεσθε (be), ἀμετακίνητοι (immovable), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἔργῳ (work) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) πάντοτε (always), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) κόπος (toil) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) κενὸς (in vain) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (also) ἱκάνωσεν (has made competent) ἡμᾶς (us as) διακόνους (ministers) καινῆς (of a new) διαθήκης (covenant), οὐ (not) γράμματος (of the letter) ἀλλὰ (but) πνεύματος (of the Spirit); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) γράμμα (letter) ἀποκτέννει* (kills), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ζωοποιεῖ (gives life).

¹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἔχοντες (having) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ταύτην (this), καθὼς (as) ἠλεήθημεν (we received mercy), οὐκ (not) ἐγκακοῦμεν (we lose heart).

¹⁸ Τὰ (-) δὲ (And) πάντα (all things) ἐκ (are of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), τοῦ (the One) καταλλάξαντος (having reconciled) ἡμᾶς (us) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) διὰ (through) Χριστοῦ (Christ), καὶ (and) δόντος (having given) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) τῆς (-) καταλλαγῆς (of reconciliation), ¹⁹ ὡς (how) ὅτι (that) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) κόσμον (the world) καταλλάσσων (reconciling) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself), μὴ (not) λογιζόμενος (reckoning) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) θέμενος (having put) ἐν (into) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (-) καταλλαγῆς (of reconciliation). ²⁰ Ὑπὲρ (For) Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) πρεσβεύομεν (we are ambassadors), ὡς (as though) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) παρακαλοῦντος (is beseeching) δι’ (through) ἡμῶν (us). δεόμεθα (We implore) ὑπὲρ (on behalf) Χριστοῦ (of Christ): καταλλάγητε (Be reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

¹ Συνεργοῦντες (Working together) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) παρακαλοῦμεν (we exhort) μὴ (not) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δέξασθαι (to receive) ὑμᾶς (you).

²³ διάκονοι (Servants) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) εἰσιν (are they)? παραφρονῶν (As being beside myself) λαλῶ (I speak) ὑπὲρ (above measure): ἐγώ (I too), ἐν (in) κόποις (labors) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) φυλακαῖς (imprisonments) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) πληγαῖς (beatings) ὑπερβαλλόντως (above measure), ἐν (in) θανάτοις (deaths) πολλάκις (often).

¹¹ φοβοῦμαι (I fear) ὑμᾶς (for you), μή (lest) πως (perhaps) εἰκῇ (in vain) κεκοπίακα (I have toiled) εἰς (for) ὑμᾶς (you).

⁵ Ἡμεῖς (We) γὰρ (for), Πνεύματι (through the Spirit) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), ἐλπίδα (the hope) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) ἀπεκδεχόμεθα (eagerly await).

⁷ Ἐτρέχετε (You were running) καλῶς (well). τίς (Who) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐνέκοψεν (cut into), ‹τῇ› (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) μὴ (not) πείθεσθαι (to obey)?

⁹ Τὸ (-) δὲ (And) καλὸν (in well) ποιοῦντες (doing), μὴ (not) ἐνκακῶμεν (we should grow weary); καιρῷ (in time) γὰρ (for) ἰδίῳ (due), θερίσομεν (we will reap a harvest) μὴ (not) ἐκλυόμενοι (giving up).

¹⁸ πεφωτισμένους (being enlightened) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), εἰς (in order for) τὸ (-) εἰδέναι (to know) ὑμᾶς (you) τίς (what) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐλπὶς (hope) τῆς (of the) κλήσεως (calling) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τίς (what) ὁ (are the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τῆς (of the) κληρονομίας (inheritance) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints),

⁵ διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἐλπίδα (hope) τὴν (-) ἀποκειμένην (being laid up) ὑμῖν (for you) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens), ἣν (which) προηκούσατε (you heard of before) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῆς (of) ἀληθείας (truth), τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), ⁶ τοῦ (the one) παρόντος (being present) εἰς (unto) ὑμᾶς (you), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) παντὶ (all) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐστὶν (it is) καρποφορούμενον (bearing fruit) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενον (increasing), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἠκούσατε (you heard) καὶ (and) ἐπέγνωτε (knew) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth),

²⁵ ἧς (of which) ἐγενόμην (became) ἐγὼ (I) διάκονος (a minister), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) οἰκονομίαν (administration) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τὴν (-) δοθεῖσάν (having been given) μοι (me) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you), πληρῶσαι (to complete) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

⁷ ἐρριζωμένοι (having been rooted) καὶ (and) ἐποικοδομούμενοι (being built up) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) βεβαιούμενοι (being strengthened in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) καθὼς (just as) ἐδιδάχθητε (you were taught), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (with) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving).

³ τὸ (that) μηδένα (no one) σαίνεσθαι (be moved) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) θλίψεσιν (tribulations) ταύταις (these). αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) γὰρ (for) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) κείμεθα (we are destined).

⁵ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) κἀγὼ (I also), μηκέτι (no longer) στέγων (enduring), ἔπεμψα (sent) εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) γνῶναι (to know) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), μή (lest) πως (somehow) ἐπείρασεν (had tempted) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the one) πειράζων (tempting), καὶ (and) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) γένηται (would be) ὁ (the) κόπος (labor) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however), ἡμέρας (of the day) ὄντες (being), νήφωμεν (should be sober), ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) θώρακα (the breastplate) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), καὶ (and) περικεφαλαίαν (the helmet) ἐλπίδα (the hope) σωτηρίας (of salvation),

¹² Χάριν (Thankfulness) ἔχω (I have) τῷ (for the One) ἐνδυναμώσαντί (having strengthened) με (me), Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), ὅτι (that) πιστόν (faithful) με (me) ἡγήσατο (He esteemed), θέμενος (having appointed me) εἰς (to) διακονίαν (service),

⁷ εἰς (in regard to) ὃ (which) ἐτέθην (was appointed) ἐγὼ (I) κῆρυξ (a herald) καὶ (and) ἀπόστολος (an apostle)— ἀλήθειαν (the truth) λέγω (I am speaking); οὐ (not) ψεύδομαι (I do lie)— διδάσκαλος (a teacher) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), ἐν (in) πίστει (faith) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth).

¹¹ εἰς (to) ὃ (which) ἐτέθην (was appointed) ἐγὼ (I) κήρυξ (a herald), καὶ (and) ἀπόστολος (an apostle), καὶ (and) διδάσκαλος (a teacher). ¹² Δι’ (For) ἣν (this) αἰτίαν (reason) καὶ (also) ταῦτα (these things) πάσχω (I suffer). ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐπαισχύνομαι (I am ashamed); οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ᾧ (whom) πεπίστευκα (I have believed), καὶ (and) πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) ὅτι (that) δυνατός (able) ἐστιν (He is) τὴν (the) παραθήκην (deposit entrusted) μου (of me) φυλάξαι (to guard) εἰς (for) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) ἡμέραν (day).

⁵ Σὺ (You) δὲ (however), νῆφε (be sober) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things), κακοπάθησον (endure afflictions), ἔργον (the work) ποίησον (do) εὐαγγελιστοῦ (of an evangelist), τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) σου (of you) πληροφόρησον (fully carry out). ⁶ Ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ἤδη (already) σπένδομαι (am being poured out), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (time) τῆς (of the) ἀναλύσεώς (departure) μου (of me) ἐφέστηκεν (is come).

⁷ ἵνα (so that), δικαιωθέντες (having been justified) τῇ (-) ἐκείνου (by that) χάριτι (grace), κληρονόμοι (heirs) γενηθῶμεν (we should become) κατ’ (according to) ἐλπίδα (the hope) ζωῆς (of life) αἰωνίου (eternal).

⁶ Χριστὸς (Christ) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) υἱὸς (the Son) ἐπὶ (over) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of Him), οὗ (whose) οἶκός (house) ἐσμεν (are) ἡμεῖς (we), ἐὰν (if indeed) τὴν (our) παρρησίαν (confidence), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boast) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

¹⁴ Μέτοχοι (Partakers) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) γεγόναμεν (we have become), ἐάνπερ (if indeed) τὴν (from the) ἀρχὴν (beginning) τῆς (the) ὑποστάσεως (assurance) μέχρι (unto) τέλους (the end) βεβαίαν (firm) κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

¹⁴ Ἔχοντες (Having) οὖν (therefore) ἀρχιερέα (a high priest) μέγαν (great), διεληλυθότα (having passed through) τοὺς (the) οὐρανούς (heavens), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κρατῶμεν (we should hold firmly) τῆς (to our) ὁμολογίας (confession).

¹⁹ ἣν (which) ὡς (as) ἄγκυραν (an anchor) ἔχομεν (we have) τῆς (of the) ψυχῆς (soul), ἀσφαλῆ (sure) τε (both) καὶ (and) βεβαίαν (unshakable) καὶ (and) εἰσερχομένην (entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (that) ἐσώτερον (within) τοῦ (the) καταπετάσματος (veil),

³⁸ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) δίκαιός (righteous) μου (of Mine) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) ζήσεται (will live); καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) ὑποστείληται (he might shrink back), οὐκ (not) εὐδοκεῖ (takes pleasure) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).”

¹⁸ ὑπέρογκα (Arrogant) γὰρ (for) ματαιότητος (of vanity) φθεγγόμενοι (speaking words), δελεάζουσιν (they entice) ἐν (with) ἐπιθυμίαις (the passions) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) ἀσελγείαις (to sensuality) τοὺς (those) ὀλίγως (barely) ἀποφεύγοντας (escaping) τοὺς (from those) ἐν (in) πλάνῃ (error) ἀναστρεφομένους (living), ¹⁹ ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) αὐτοῖς (them) ἐπαγγελλόμενοι (promising), αὐτοὶ (themselves) δοῦλοι (slaves) ὑπάρχοντες (being) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of corruption). ᾧ (By what) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἥττηται (has been subdued), τούτῳ (by that) ‹καὶ› (also) δεδούλωται (he is enslaved). ²⁰ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τὰ (the) μιάσματα (pollutions) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐν (through) ἐπιγνώσει (the knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τούτοις (in these) δὲ (now) πάλιν (again) ἐμπλακέντες (having been entangled) ἡττῶνται (they are subdued), γέγονεν (has become) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last state) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first). ²¹ κρεῖττον (Better) γὰρ (for) ἦν (it would have been) αὐτοῖς (for them) μὴ (not) ἐπεγνωκέναι (to have known) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), ἢ (than) ἐπιγνοῦσιν (having known it), ὑποστρέψαι (to have turned) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) παραδοθείσης (having been delivered) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἁγίας (holy) ἐντολῆς (commandment). ²² συμβέβηκεν (Has happened) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸ (the thing) τῆς (of the) ἀληθοῦς (true) παροιμίας (proverb): “Κύων (A dog) ἐπιστρέψας (having returned) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (its) ἴδιον (own) ἐξέραμα (vomit),” καί (and), “Ὗς (A sow) λουσαμένη (having washed), εἰς (to her) κυλισμὸν (rolling place) βορβόρου (in the mire).”

²⁷ καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you), τὸ (the) χρῖσμα (anointing) ὃ (that) ἐλάβετε (you received) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), μένει (abides) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) χρείαν (need) ἔχετε (you have) ἵνα (that) τις (anyone) διδάσκῃ (should teach) ὑμᾶς (you). ἀλλ’ (But) ὡς (just as) τὸ (the) αὐτοῦ (same) χρῖσμα (anointing) διδάσκει (teaches) ὑμᾶς (you) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all things), καὶ (and) ἀληθές (true) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ψεῦδος (a lie); καὶ (and) καθὼς (just as) ἐδίδαξεν (it has taught) ὑμᾶς (you), μένετε (you shall abide) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).

¹ Ἴδετε (Behold) ποταπὴν (what) ἀγάπην (love) δέδωκεν (has given) ἡμῖν (to us) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ἵνα (that) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God) κληθῶμεν (we should be called) — καὶ (and) ἐσμέν (we are)! διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (knows) ἡμᾶς (us), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (it knew) αὐτόν (Him). ² Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), νῦν (now) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐσμεν (are we), καὶ (and) οὔπω (not yet) ἐφανερώθη (has been revealed) τί (what) ἐσόμεθα (we will be). οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (when) φανερωθῇ (He appears), ὅμοιοι (like) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐσόμεθα (we will be), ὅτι (for) ὀψόμεθα (we will see) αὐτὸν (Him) καθώς (as) ἐστιν (He is). ³ καὶ (And) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) ἐλπίδα (hope) ταύτην (this) ἐπ’ (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἁγνίζει (purifies) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (He) ἁγνός (pure) ἐστιν (is).

¹⁰ Μηδὲν* (Not) φοβοῦ (fear) ἃ (what) μέλλεις (you are about) πάσχειν (to suffer). ἰδοὺ (Behold), μέλλει (is about) βάλλειν (to cast) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἐξ (some of) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἵνα (so that) πειρασθῆτε (you might be tested); καὶ (and) ἕξετε (you shall have) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἡμερῶν (days) δέκα (ten). γίνου (Be) πιστὸς (faithful) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death), καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you) τὸν (the) στέφανον (crown) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).
