⁵¹ Καὶ (And) κατέβη (He went down) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth), καὶ (and) ἦν (He was) ὑποτασσόμενος (subject) αὐτοῖς (to them). καὶ (And) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him) διετήρει (was treasuring up) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (matters) ‹ταῦτα› (these) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτῆς (of her).

¹² Ὥστε (So) ὁ (-) μὲν (indeed) νόμος (the law is) ἅγιος (holy), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment is) ἁγία (holy) καὶ (and) δικαία (righteous) καὶ (and) ἀγαθή (good).

² καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συσχηματίζεσθε (be conformed) τῷ (to the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταμορφοῦσθε (be transformed) τῇ (by the) ἀνακαινώσει (renewing) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to prove) ὑμᾶς (by you), τί (what is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) καὶ (and) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) καὶ (and) τέλειον (perfect).

² ἵνα (that) αὐτὴν (her) προσδέξησθε (you might receive) ἐν (in the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἀξίως (worthily) τῶν (-) ἁγίων (of the saints), καὶ (and) παραστῆτε (you might assist) αὐτῇ (her) ἐν (in) ᾧ (whatever) ἂν (-) ὑμῶν (of you) χρῄζῃ (she may need) πράγματι (matter). καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) αὐτὴ (she) προστάτις (a patroness) πολλῶν (of many) ἐγενήθη (has been), καὶ (and) ἐμοῦ (of me) αὐτοῦ (myself).

⁵⁸ Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me) ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ἑδραῖοι (steadfast) γίνεσθε (be), ἀμετακίνητοι (immovable), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἔργῳ (work) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) πάντοτε (always), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) κόπος (toil) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) κενὸς (in vain) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

²⁰ Τὰ (-) τέκνα (Children), ὑπακούετε (obey) τοῖς (the) γονεῦσιν (parents) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things); τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for) εὐάρεστόν (pleasing) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord). ²¹ Οἱ (-) πατέρες (Fathers), μὴ (not) ἐρεθίζετε (do provoke) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἀθυμῶσιν (they might become discouraged). ²² Οἱ (-) δοῦλοι (Slaves), ὑπακούετε (obey) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things) τοῖς (the) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) κυρίοις (masters), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) ὀφθαλμοδουλίαις (eye-services) ὡς (as) ἀνθρωπάρεσκοι (men-pleasers), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) ἁπλότητι (sincerity) καρδίας (of heart), φοβούμενοι (fearing) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord). ²³ Ὃ (Whatever) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you might do), ἐκ (from) ψυχῆς (the soul) ἐργάζεσθε (work), ὡς (as) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀνθρώποις (to men), ²⁴ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord) ἀπολήμψεσθε (you will receive) τὴν (the) ἀνταπόδοσιν (reward) τῆς (of the) κληρονομίας (inheritance). τῷ (The) Κυρίῳ (Lord) Χριστῷ (Christ) δουλεύετε (you serve). ²⁵ ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἀδικῶν (doing wrong) κομίσεται (will be repaid for) ὃ (what) ἠδίκησεν (he has done wrong), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) προσωπολημψία (partiality).

⁴ εἰ (If) δέ (however) τις (any) χήρα (widow), τέκνα (children) ἢ (or) ἔκγονα (grandchildren) ἔχει (has), μανθανέτωσαν (let them learn) πρῶτον (first) τὸν (to the) ἴδιον (own) οἶκον (household) εὐσεβεῖν (to be devout) καὶ (and) ἀμοιβὰς (recompense) ἀποδιδόναι (to give) τοῖς (to) προγόνοις (parents); τοῦτο (this) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἀπόδεκτον (pleasing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

¹³ Ὑποτάγητε (Be in subjection) πάσῃ (to every) ἀνθρωπίνῃ (human) κτίσει (institution) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), εἴτε (whether) βασιλεῖ (to the king) ὡς (as) ὑπερέχοντι (being supreme),

⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (commanded), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother)’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ⁵ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), “Δῶρον (It is a gift), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),” ⁶ οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) 〈ἢ (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ〉 (of himself).’ καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)!

⁹ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καλῶς (Neatly) ἀθετεῖτε (do you set aside) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (that) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you), τηρήσητε (you might keep). ¹⁰ Μωϋσῆς (Moses) γὰρ (for) εἶπεν (said), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) σου (of you),’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ¹¹ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say that) Ἐὰν (if) εἴπῃ (says) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ‘Κορβᾶν (It is Corban),’ ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is), Δῶρον (a gift), ‘Ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),’ ¹² οὐκέτι (no longer) ἀφίετε (do you allow) αὐτὸν (him) οὐδὲν (anything) ποιῆσαι (to do) τῷ (for the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ¹³ ἀκυροῦντες (making void) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῇ (for the) παραδόσει (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you) ᾗ (which) παρεδώκατε (you have handed down). καὶ (And) παρόμοια (like things) τοιαῦτα (such) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖτε (you do).”

⁷ ἀπόδοτε (Render) πᾶσιν (to all) τὰς (their) ὀφειλάς (dues), τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόρον (tax), τὸν (the) φόρον (tax); τῷ (to whom) τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue), τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue); τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόβον (respect), τὸν (the) φόβον (respect); τῷ (to whom) τὴν (the) τιμὴν (honor), τὴν (the) τιμήν (honor).

²¹ Οἱ (-) πατέρες (Fathers), μὴ (not) ἐρεθίζετε (do provoke) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἀθυμῶσιν (they might become discouraged).

⁵ ὑπόμνησιν (remembrance) λαβὼν (having taken) τῆς (of the) ἐν (within) σοὶ (you) ἀνυποκρίτου (sincere) πίστεως (faith), ἥτις (which) ἐνῴκησεν (dwelt) πρῶτον (first) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) μάμμῃ (grandmother) σου (of you), Λωΐδι (Lois), καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) μητρί (mother) σου (of you), Εὐνίκῃ (Eunice); πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) ἐν (it is in) σοί (you).

¹⁵ καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) βρέφους (childhood) [τὰ] (the) ἱερὰ (sacred) γράμματα (writings) οἶδας (you have known), τὰ (-) δυνάμενά (being able) σε (you) σοφίσαι (to make wise) εἰς (unto) σωτηρίαν (salvation), διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), τῆς (-) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁷ Εἰς (As) παιδείαν (discipline) ὑπομένετε (endure), ὡς (as) υἱοῖς (sons) ὑμῖν (you) προσφέρεται (is treating) ὁ (-) Θεός (God); τίς (what) γὰρ (for) υἱὸς (son is there) ὃν (whom) οὐ (not) παιδεύει (disciplines) πατήρ (his father)? ⁸ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) χωρίς (without) ἐστε (you are) παιδείας (of discipline), ἧς (of which) μέτοχοι (partakers) γεγόνασιν (they have become) πάντες (all), ἄρα (then) νόθοι (illegitimate children) καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) υἱοί (sons) ἐστε (you are). ⁹ εἶτα (Furthermore) τοὺς (-) μὲν (indeed) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us) πατέρας (fathers) εἴχομεν (we have had) παιδευτὰς (correctors), καὶ (and) ἐνετρεπόμεθα (we respected them); οὐ (not) πολὺ (much) [δὲ] (and) μᾶλλον (more) ὑποταγησόμεθα (shall we be in subjection) τῷ (to the) Πατρὶ (Father) τῶν (-) πνευμάτων (of spirits), καὶ (and) ζήσομεν (shall live)? ¹⁰ Οἱ (-) μὲν (Truly) γὰρ (indeed) πρὸς (for) ὀλίγας (a few) ἡμέρας (days), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) δοκοῦν (seeming good) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἐπαίδευον (they were disciplining us); ὁ (-) δὲ (but He) ἐπὶ (for) τὸ (our) συμφέρον (benefitting), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) μεταλαβεῖν (to share) τῆς (of the) ἁγιότητος (holiness) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

²⁴ Οὐδεὶς (No one) δύναται (is able) δυσὶ (two) κυρίοις (masters) δουλεύειν (to serve); ἢ (either) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἕνα (one) μισήσει (he will hate), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἕτερον (other) ἀγαπήσει (he will love); ἢ (or) ἑνὸς (the one) ἀνθέξεται (he will be devoted to), καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) ἑτέρου (other) καταφρονήσει (he will despise). οὐ (Not) δύνασθε (you are able) Θεῷ (God) δουλεύειν (to serve), καὶ (and) μαμωνᾷ (money).

⁹ καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) ἄνθρωπός (a man) εἰμι (am) ὑπὸ (under) ἐξουσίαν (authority), ἔχων (having) ὑπ’ (under) ἐμαυτὸν (me) στρατιώτας (soldiers); καὶ (and) λέγω (I say) τούτῳ (to this one), ‘Πορεύθητι (Go),’ καὶ (and) πορεύεται (he goes); καὶ (and) ἄλλῳ (to another), ‘Ἔρχου (Come),’ καὶ (and) ἔρχεται (he comes); καὶ (and) τῷ (to) δούλῳ (the servant) μου (of me), ‘Ποίησον (Do) τοῦτο (this),’ καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (he does it).”

⁴⁶ Καθ’ (Every) ἡμέραν (day) τε (and) προσκαρτεροῦντες (steadfastly continuing) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), κλῶντές (breaking) τε (then) κατ’ (at each) οἶκον (house) ἄρτον (bread), μετελάμβανον (they were partaking) τροφῆς (of food) ἐν (with) ἀγαλλιάσει (gladness) καὶ (and) ἀφελότητι (sincerity) καρδίας (of heart),

⁷ Ὡς (When) δὲ (then) ἀπῆλθεν (had departed) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel) ὁ (-) λαλῶν (speaking) αὐτῷ (to him), φωνήσας (having called) δύο (two) τῶν (of the) οἰκετῶν (servants) καὶ (and) στρατιώτην (a soldier) εὐσεβῆ (devout) τῶν (of those who) προσκαρτερούντων (are attending) αὐτῷ (him), ⁸ καὶ (and) ἐξηγησάμενος (having related) ἅπαντα (all things) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Ἰόππην (Joppa).

³ κἀγὼ (And I), ἐν (in) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (fear), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρόμῳ (trembling) πολλῷ (much), ἐγενόμην (was) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you).

²² ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) κληθεὶς (having been called) δοῦλος (being a slave), ἀπελεύθερος (a freedman) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐστίν (is); ὁμοίως (likewise) ὁ (the one) ἐλεύθερος (free) κληθεὶς (having been called), δοῦλός (a slave) ἐστιν (is) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

¹ Ὅσοι (As many as) εἰσὶν (are) ὑπὸ (under) ζυγὸν (a yoke) δοῦλοι (as slaves), τοὺς (the) ἰδίους (own) δεσπότας (masters) πάσης (of all) τιμῆς (honor) ἀξίους (worthy) ἡγείσθωσαν (let them esteem), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) διδασκαλία (teaching) βλασφημῆται (should be blasphemed). ² οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) πιστοὺς (believing) ἔχοντες (having) δεσπότας (masters), μὴ (not) καταφρονείτωσαν (let them despise them) ὅτι (because) ἀδελφοί (brothers) εἰσιν (they are); ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) δουλευέτωσαν (let them serve them), ὅτι (because) πιστοί (believing ones) εἰσιν (they are), καὶ (and) ἀγαπητοὶ (beloved), οἱ (-) τῆς (by the) εὐεργεσίας (good service) ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι (being helped). ⁹ Δούλους (Servants) ἰδίοις (to their own) δεσπόταις (masters) ὑποτάσσεσθαι (are to be subject), ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (everything) εὐαρέστους (well-pleasing) εἶναι (to be), μὴ (not) ἀντιλέγοντας (gainsaying), ¹⁰ μὴ (not) νοσφιζομένους (pilfering), ἀλλὰ (but) πᾶσαν (all) πίστιν (fidelity) ἐνδεικνυμένους (showing) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) τὴν (the) διδασκαλίαν (doctrine) τὴν (of) τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God), κοσμῶσιν (they may adorn) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things).

¹⁸ Οἱ (-) οἰκέται (Servants), ὑποτασσόμενοι (be subject) ἐν (with) παντὶ (all) φόβῳ (fear) τοῖς (to) δεσπόταις (masters), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) τοῖς (to the) ἀγαθοῖς (good) καὶ (and) ἐπιεικέσιν (gentle), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to the) σκολιοῖς (unreasonable). ¹⁹ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) χάρις (is acceptable), εἰ (if) διὰ (for sake of) συνείδησιν (conscience) Θεοῦ (toward God), ὑποφέρει (endures) τις (anyone) λύπας (griefs), πάσχων (suffering) ἀδίκως (unjustly). ²⁰ ποῖον (What kind of) γὰρ (for) κλέος (credit is it), εἰ (if) ἁμαρτάνοντες (sinning) καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμενοι (being struck) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure)? ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) ἀγαθοποιοῦντες (doing good) καὶ (and) πάσχοντες (suffering) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure), τοῦτο (this is) χάρις (commendable) παρὰ (before) Θεῷ (God). ²¹ Εἰς (To this) τοῦτο (hereunto) γὰρ (for) ἐκλήθητε (you have been called), ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἔπαθεν (suffered) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), ὑμῖν (you) ὑπολιμπάνων (leaving) ὑπογραμμὸν (an example) ἵνα (that) ἐπακολουθήσητε (you should follow after) τοῖς (the) ἴχνεσιν (steps) αὐτοῦ (of Him):

² ἐποπτεύσαντες (having witnessed) τὴν (the) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (respect) ἁγνὴν (pure) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you),

²¹ Οὐ (Not) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) λέγων (saying) μοι (to Me), ‘Κύριε (Lord), Κύριε (Lord),’ εἰσελεύσεται (will enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the one) ποιῶν (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

⁵⁰ ὅστις (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἂν (-) ποιήσῃ (shall do) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens), αὐτός (he) μου (My) ἀδελφὸς (brother) καὶ (and) ἀδελφὴ (sister) καὶ (and) μήτηρ (mother) ἐστίν (is).”

¹⁷ χάρις (Thanks be) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ὅτι (that) ἦτε (you used to be) δοῦλοι (slaves) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), ὑπηκούσατε (you have become obedient) δὲ (now) ἐκ (from the) καρδίας (heart), εἰς (to) ὃν (which) παρεδόθητε (you were handed over) τύπον (to the form) διδαχῆς (of teaching).

¹⁰ Ἄρτι (Presently) γὰρ (for) ἀνθρώπους (of men) πείθω (do I seek approval), ἢ (or) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God)? ἢ (Or) ζητῶ (do I seek) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἀρέσκειν (to please)? εἰ (For if) ἔτι (yet) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἤρεσκον (I were pleasing), Χριστοῦ (of Christ) δοῦλος (a servant) οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἤμην (I would be).

¹⁷ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), μὴ (not) γίνεσθε (be) ἄφρονες (foolish), ἀλλὰ (but) συνίετε (understand) τί (what) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord is).

⁹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἠκούσαμεν (we heard), οὐ (not) παυόμεθα (cease) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) προσευχόμενοι (praying) καὶ (and) αἰτούμενοι (asking) ἵνα (that) πληρωθῆτε (you may be filled with) τὴν (the) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge) τοῦ (of the) θελήματος (will) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) καὶ (and) συνέσει (understanding) πνευματικῇ (spiritual),

²² Οἱ (-) δοῦλοι (Slaves), ὑπακούετε (obey) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things) τοῖς (the) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) κυρίοις (masters), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) ὀφθαλμοδουλίαις (eye-services) ὡς (as) ἀνθρωπάρεσκοι (men-pleasers), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) ἁπλότητι (sincerity) καρδίας (of heart), φοβούμενοι (fearing) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord). ²³ Ὃ (Whatever) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you might do), ἐκ (from) ψυχῆς (the soul) ἐργάζεσθε (work), ὡς (as) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀνθρώποις (to men),

⁴ ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (just as) δεδοκιμάσμεθα (we have been approved) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πιστευθῆναι (to be entrusted with) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), οὕτως (so) λαλοῦμεν (we speak), οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἀρέσκοντες (pleasing), ἀλλὰ (but) Θεῷ (God), τῷ (the One) δοκιμάζοντι (examining) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us).

³ Τοῦτο (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) θέλημα (the will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἁγιασμὸς (sanctification) ὑμῶν (of you): ἀπέχεσθαι (To abstain) ὑμᾶς (you are) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality);

³⁶ ὑπομονῆς (Of endurance) γὰρ (for) ἔχετε (You have) χρείαν (need), ἵνα (so that), τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ποιήσαντες (having done), κομίσησθε (you may receive) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise).

²¹ καταρτίσαι (equip) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything) ἀγαθῷ (good), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) ποιῆσαι (to do) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ποιῶν (working) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) τὸ (that which is) εὐάρεστον (well pleasing) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ᾧ (to whom be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

¹⁵ ὅτι (because) οὕτως (this) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good), φιμοῦν (to put to silence) τὴν (the) τῶν (-) ἀφρόνων (of foolish) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἀγνωσίαν (ignorance),

² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time).

¹⁷ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) αὐτοῦ (of it); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ποιῶν (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).

³¹ Εἴτε (Whether) οὖν (therefore) ἐσθίετε (you eat), εἴτε (or) πίνετε (drink), εἴτε (or) τι (whatever) ποιεῖτε (you do), πάντα (all things) εἰς (to the) δόξαν (glory) Θεοῦ (of God) ποιεῖτε (do).

²³ Ὃ (Whatever) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you might do), ἐκ (from) ψυχῆς (the soul) ἐργάζεσθε (work), ὡς (as) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀνθρώποις (to men),

¹² χαίρετε (Rejoice) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (exult), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολὺς (is great) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) τοὺς (-) πρὸ (before) ὑμῶν (you).

¹ Προσέχετε (Beware) δὲ (now) τὴν (the) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) ὑμῶν (of you) μὴ (not) ποιεῖν (to do) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) θεαθῆναι (to be seen) αὐτοῖς (by them); εἰ (if) δὲ (now) μή¦γε (otherwise), μισθὸν (reward) οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (have you) παρὰ (with) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τῷ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

⁴ ὅπως (so that) ᾖ (may be) σου (your) ἡ (-) ἐλεημοσύνη (giving) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρυπτῷ (secret). καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) σου (of you), ὁ (the One) βλέπων (seeing) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρυπτῷ (secret), ἀποδώσει (will reward) σοι (you).

⁴¹ ὁ (The one) δεχόμενος (receiving) προφήτην (a prophet) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) προφήτου (of a prophet), μισθὸν (the reward) προφήτου (of a prophet) λήμψεται (will receive); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) δεχόμενος (receiving) δίκαιον (a righteous man) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) δικαίου (of a righteous man), μισθὸν (the reward) δικαίου (of a righteous man) λήμψεται (will receive). ⁴² καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἂν* (-) ποτίσῃ (shall give to drink) ἕνα (one) τῶν (the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) ποτήριον (a cup) ψυχροῦ (of cold water), μόνον (only) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) μαθητοῦ (of a disciple), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀπολέσῃ (shall he lose) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) αὐτοῦ (of him).”

²⁷ μέλλει (Is about) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) αὐτοῦ (of Him), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἀποδώσει (He will give) ἑκάστῳ (to each) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) πρᾶξιν (deeds) αὐτοῦ (of him).

³⁵ Πλὴν (But) ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) ἀγαθοποιεῖτε (do good), καὶ (and) δανίζετε (lend), μηδὲν (nothing) ἀπελπίζοντες (expecting in return), καὶ (and) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολύς (great), καὶ (and) ἔσεσθε (you will be) υἱοὶ (sons of) Ὑψίστου (the Most High); ὅτι (for) αὐτὸς (He) χρηστός (kind) ἐστιν (is) ἐπὶ (to) τοὺς (the) ἀχαρίστους (ungrateful) καὶ (and) πονηρούς (evil).

¹⁴ καὶ (and) μακάριος (blessed) ἔσῃ (you will be), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχουσιν (they have) ἀνταποδοῦναί (to repay) σοι (you). ἀνταποδοθήσεται (It will be recompensed) γάρ (for) σοι (to you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) τῶν (of the) δικαίων (righteous).”

⁶ ὃς (who) “Ἀποδώσει (will give) ἑκάστῳ (to each), κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him),” ⁷ τοῖς (to those who) μὲν (indeed) καθ’ (with) ὑπομονὴν (endurance) ἔργου (in work) ἀγαθοῦ (good), δόξαν (glory) καὶ (and) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) ἀφθαρσίαν (immortality) ζητοῦσιν (are seeking), ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); ⁸ τοῖς (to those) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) ἐριθείας (self-interest) καὶ (and) ἀπειθοῦσι (disobeying) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), πειθομένοις (being persuaded about) δὲ (however) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), ὀργὴ (wrath) καὶ (and) θυμός (anger); ⁹ θλῖψις (tribulation) καὶ (and) στενοχωρία (distress) ἐπὶ (upon) πᾶσαν (every) ψυχὴν (soul) ἀνθρώπου (of man) τοῦ (-) κατεργαζομένου (working) τὸ (-) κακόν (evil), Ἰουδαίου (of Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first), καὶ (and also) Ἕλληνος (of Greek); ¹⁰ δόξα (glory) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) τιμὴ (honor), καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) ἐργαζομένῳ (doing) τὸ (-) ἀγαθόν (good), Ἰουδαίῳ (to Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first), καὶ (and) Ἕλληνι (to Greek).

¹⁰ τοὺς (-) γὰρ (For) πάντας (all) ἡμᾶς (of us) φανερωθῆναι (to be revealed) δεῖ (it behooves) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ἵνα (that) κομίσηται (may receive back) ἕκαστος (each) τὰ (the things done) διὰ (in) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body), πρὸς (according to) ἃ (what) ἔπραξεν (he did), εἴτε (whether) ἀγαθὸν (good) εἴτε (or) φαῦλον (evil).

²⁸ οὐκ (Neither) ἔνι (there is) Ἰουδαῖος (Jew) οὐδὲ (nor) Ἕλλην (Greek); οὐκ (neither) ἔνι (there is) δοῦλος (slave) οὐδὲ (nor) ἐλεύθερος (free); οὐκ (neither) ἔνι (there is) ἄρσεν (male) καὶ (and) θῆλυ (female); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you) εἷς (one) ἐστε (are) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹¹ ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) ἔνι (there is) Ἕλλην (Greek) καὶ (and) Ἰουδαῖος (Jew), περιτομὴ (circumcision) καὶ (and) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision), βάρβαρος (Barbarian), Σκύθης (Scythian), δοῦλος (slave), ἐλεύθερος (free); ἀλλὰ (but) ‹τὰ› (-) πάντα (all) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all) Χριστός (Christ is).

²⁴ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord) ἀπολήμψεσθε (you will receive) τὴν (the) ἀνταπόδοσιν (reward) τῆς (of the) κληρονομίας (inheritance). τῷ (The) Κυρίῳ (Lord) Χριστῷ (Christ) δουλεύετε (you serve).

³⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀποβάλητε (throw away) οὖν (therefore) τὴν (the) παρρησίαν (boldness) ὑμῶν (of you), ἥτις (which) ἔχει (has) μεγάλην (a great) μισθαποδοσίαν (reward).

²⁶ μείζονα (greater) πλοῦτον (wealth) ἡγησάμενος (having esteemed) τῶν (than the) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt) θησαυρῶν (treasures) τὸν (the) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ); ἀπέβλεπεν (he was looking) γὰρ (for) εἰς (toward) τὴν (the) μισθαποδοσίαν (reward).

¹² Πάντα (All things) οὖν (therefore), ὅσα (as many as) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you might desire) ἵνα (that) ποιῶσιν (should do) ὑμῖν (to you) οἱ (the) ἄνθρωποι (men), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ποιεῖτε (do) αὐτοῖς (to them). οὗτος (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets).

⁸ τότε (Then) λέγει (he says) τοῖς (to) δούλοις (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Ὁ (The) μὲν (indeed) γάμος (wedding feast) ἕτοιμός (ready) ἐστιν (is); οἱ (those) δὲ (however) κεκλημένοι (having been invited) οὐκ (not) ἦσαν (were) ἄξιοι (worthy).

¹⁰ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθόντες (having gone out οἱ (the) δοῦλοι (servants) ἐκεῖνοι (those) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) ὁδοὺς (highways), συνήγαγον (they brought together) πάντας (all) οὓς (as many as) εὗρον (they found), πονηρούς (evil) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἀγαθούς (good); καὶ (and) ἐπλήσθη (became full) ὁ (the) γάμος* (wedding hall) ἀνακειμένων (of those reclining).

⁴⁸ Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπῃ (should say) ὁ (the) κακὸς (evil) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (that) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Χρονίζει (Delays) μου (of Me) ὁ (the) κύριος (master),’

⁵¹ καὶ (and) διχοτομήσει (will cut in pieces) αὐτὸν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) μέρος (place) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὑποκριτῶν (hypocrites) θήσει (will appoint); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of) ὀδόντων (teeth).

³¹ καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) θέλετε (you desire) ἵνα (that) ποιῶσιν (should do) ὑμῖν (to you) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men), ποιεῖτε (do) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁμοίως (likewise).

⁴⁵ Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπῃ (should say) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (that) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Χρονίζει (Delays) ὁ (the) κύριός (master) μου (of Me) ἔρχεσθαι (to come),’ καὶ (and) ἄρξηται (should begin) τύπτειν (to beat) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (men-servants) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) παιδίσκας (maid-servants), ἐσθίειν (to eat) τε (also) καὶ (and) πίνειν (to drink) καὶ (and) μεθύσκεσθαι (to get drunk), ⁴⁶ ἥξει (will come) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (that) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (a day) ᾗ (in which) οὐ (not) προσδοκᾷ (he does expect), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὥρᾳ (an hour) ᾗ (that) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (he knows), καὶ (and) διχοτομήσει (he will cut in two) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) μέρος (place) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀπίστων (unbelievers) θήσει (will appoint).

¹³ ὑμεῖς (You) φωνεῖτέ (call) με (Me) Ὁ (-) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Κύριος (Lord), καὶ (and) καλῶς (rightly) λέγετε (you say), εἰμὶ (I am) γάρ (for).

³⁴ Ἀνοίξας (Having opened) δὲ (then) Πέτρος (Peter) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth), εἶπεν (he said), “Ἐπ’ (Of) ἀληθείας (a truth) καταλαμβάνομαι (I understand) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) προσωπολήμπτης (One who shows partiality) ὁ (-) Θεός (God),

¹¹ οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (there is) προσωπολημψία (partiality) παρὰ (with) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God).

¹⁰ ἵνα (that) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) πᾶν (every) γόνυ (knee) κάμψῃ (should bow), ἐπουρανίων (in the heavens) καὶ (and) ἐπιγείων (on earth) καὶ (and) καταχθονίων (under the earth), ¹¹ καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) γλῶσσα (tongue) ἐξομολογήσηται (should confess) ὅτι (that) ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (is Lord) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus) ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) Θεοῦ (of God) Πατρός (the Father).

²⁵ ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἀδικῶν (doing wrong) κομίσεται (will be repaid for) ὃ (what) ἠδίκησεν (he has done wrong), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) προσωπολημψία (partiality).

⁸ Εἰ (If) μέντοι (indeed) νόμον (the law) τελεῖτε (you keep) βασιλικὸν (royal), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) γραφήν (Scripture), “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself),” καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you are doing).

²² ἐγερθήσονται (There will arise) γὰρ* (for) ψευδόχριστοι (false Christs) καὶ (and) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets), καὶ (and) δώσουσιν* (will give) σημεῖα (signs) καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders), πρὸς (so as) τὸ (-) ἀποπλανᾶν (to deceive) εἰ (if) δυνατὸν (possible), τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect).

²⁹ ἵνα (Thus) μή (not) ποτε (ever) θέντος (he having laid) αὐτοῦ (of it) θεμέλιον (a foundation), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἰσχύοντος (being able) ἐκτελέσαι (to finish), πάντες (all) οἱ (-) θεωροῦντες (seeing it) ἄρξωνται (may begin) αὐτῷ (him) ἐμπαίζειν (to mock), ³⁰ λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), ‘Οὗτος (This) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἤρξατο (began) οἰκοδομεῖν (to build) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυσεν (was able) ἐκτελέσαι (to finish).’ ³¹ Ἢ (Or) τίς (what) βασιλεὺς (king), πορευόμενος (proceeding) ἑτέρῳ (with another) βασιλεῖ (king) συμβαλεῖν (to engage) εἰς (in) πόλεμον (war), οὐχὶ (not), καθίσας (having sat down), πρῶτον (first) βουλεύσεται (will take counsel) εἰ (whether) δυνατός (able) ἐστιν (he is) ἐν (with) δέκα (ten) χιλιάσιν (thousand) ὑπαντῆσαι (to meet) τῷ (the one) μετὰ (with) εἴκοσι (twenty) χιλιάδων (thousand) ἐρχομένῳ (coming) ἐπ’ (against) αὐτόν (him)?

¹² ἡ (The) νὺξ (night) προέκοψεν (is nearly over), ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἡμέρα (the day) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). ἀποθώμεθα (We should cast off) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness); ἐνδυσώμεθα (we should put on) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ὅπλα (armor) τοῦ (-) φωτός (of light).

¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

¹³ πειρασμὸς (Temptation) ὑμᾶς (you) οὐκ (not) εἴληφεν (has seized), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἀνθρώπινος (what is common to man); πιστὸς (faithful) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Θεός (is God), ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) ἐάσει (will allow) ὑμᾶς (you) πειρασθῆναι (to be tempted) ὑπὲρ (beyond) ὃ (what) δύνασθε (you are able), ἀλλὰ (but) ποιήσει (will provide), σὺν (with) τῷ (the) πειρασμῷ (temptation), καὶ (also) τὴν (the) ἔκβασιν (escape), τοῦ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑπενεγκεῖν (to endure it).

¹¹ ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) πλεονεκτηθῶμεν (we should be outwitted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (Satan); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῦ (of his) τὰ (-) νοήματα (schemes) ἀγνοοῦμεν (we are ignorant).

⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁷ ἐν (in the) λόγῳ (word) ἀληθείας (of truth), ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) Θεοῦ (of God); διὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὅπλων (weapons) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τῶν (for the) δεξιῶν (right hand) καὶ (and) ἀριστερῶν (for the left);

⁴ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ὅπλα (weapons) τῆς (of the) στρατείας (warfare) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐ (are not) σαρκικὰ (fleshly), ἀλλὰ (but) δυνατὰ (powerful) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (divinely) πρὸς (to) καθαίρεσιν (the demolition) ὀχυρωμάτων (of strongholds),

³ Φοβοῦμαι (I am afraid) δὲ (however), μή (lest) πως (by any means) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ἐξηπάτησεν (deceived) Εὕαν (Eve) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) αὐτοῦ (of him), φθαρῇ (might be corrupted) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἁπλότητος (simplicity) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἁγνότητος (purity) τῆς (-) εἰς (in) ‹τὸν› (-) Χριστόν (Christ).

¹³ οἱ (-) γὰρ (For) τοιοῦτοι (such are) ψευδαπόστολοι (false apostles), ἐργάται (workers) δόλιοι (deceitful), μετασχηματιζόμενοι (disguising themselves) εἰς (as) ἀποστόλους (apostles) Χριστοῦ (of Christ). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) οὐ (no) θαῦμα (wonder); αὐτὸς (himself) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) μετασχηματίζεται (masquerades) εἰς (as) ἄγγελον (an angel) φωτός (of light). ¹⁵ οὐ (It is not) μέγα (surprising) οὖν (therefore), εἰ (if) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) διάκονοι (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετασχηματίζονται (masquerade) ὡς (as) διάκονοι (servants) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), ὧν (whose) τὸ (-) τέλος (end) ἔσται (will be) κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹⁴ ἵνα (so that) μηκέτι (no longer) ὦμεν (we might be) νήπιοι (infants), κλυδωνιζόμενοι (being tossed by waves) καὶ (and) περιφερόμενοι (being carried about) παντὶ (by every) ἀνέμῳ (wind) τῆς (-) διδασκαλίας (of teaching), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κυβείᾳ* (cunning) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness), πρὸς (with a view to) τὴν (the) μεθοδείαν (scheming) τῆς (-) πλάνης (of deceit).

²⁴ καὶ (and) ἐνδύσασθαι (to have put on) τὸν (the) καινὸν (new) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (-) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) κτισθέντα (having been created) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ὁσιότητι (holiness) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth).

¹³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἀναλάβετε (take up) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) δυνηθῆτε (you may be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to withstand) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) πονηρᾷ (evil), καὶ (and) ἅπαντα (all things) κατεργασάμενοι (having done), στῆναι (to stand).

⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however), ἡμέρας (of the day) ὄντες (being), νήφωμεν (should be sober), ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) θώρακα (the breastplate) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), καὶ (and) περικεφαλαίαν (the helmet) ἐλπίδα (the hope) σωτηρίας (of salvation),

²⁵ ὅθεν (wherefore) καὶ (also), σῴζειν (to save) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) παντελὲς (uttermost) δύναται (He is able), τοὺς (those) προσερχομένους (drawing near) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), πάντοτε (always) ζῶν (living) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἐντυγχάνειν (to intercede) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them).

⁸ Νήψατε (Be sober-minded); γρηγορήσατε (watch). ὁ (The) ἀντίδικος (adversary) ὑμῶν (of You), διάβολος (the devil), ὡς (as) λέων (a lion) ὠρυόμενος (roaring) περιπατεῖ (prowls about), ζητῶν (seeking) τινα (whom) καταπιεῖν (to devour),

¹ Ἐγένοντο (There were) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσονται (there will be) ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (false teachers), οἵτινες (who) παρεισάξουσιν (will stealthily introduce) αἱρέσεις (heresies) ἀπωλείας (destructive), καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀγοράσαντα (having bought) αὐτοὺς (them) δεσπότην (Master) ἀρνούμενοι (denying), ἐπάγοντες (bringing upon) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ταχινὴν (swift) ἀπώλειαν (destruction). ² καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἐξακολουθήσουσιν (will follow after) αὐτῶν (their) ταῖς (-) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), δι’ (through) οὓς (whom) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) βλασφημηθήσεται (will be maligned). ³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

²⁴ Τῷ (To Him) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) φυλάξαι (to keep) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀπταίστους (from stumbling) καὶ (and) στῆσαι (to present you) κατενώπιον (in the presence of) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀμώμους (blameless) ἐν (with) ἀγαλλιάσει (exultation) —

²⁴ Ὑμῖν (To you) δὲ (however) λέγω (I say), τοῖς (to the) λοιποῖς (rest) τοῖς (of those) ἐν (in) Θυατείροις (Thyatira), ὅσοι (as many as) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (have) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) ταύτην (this), οἵτινες (who) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (have known) τὰ (the) βαθέα (depths) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan), ὡς (as) λέγουσιν (they say): οὐ (Not) βάλλω (I will cast) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἄλλο (any other) βάρος (burden).

⁹ καὶ (And) ἐβλήθη (was thrown out) ὁ (the) δράκων (dragon) ὁ (-) μέγας (great), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὁ (who) καλούμενος (is called) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ὁ (-) πλανῶν (deceiving) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (inhabited world) ὅλην (whole). ἐβλήθη (He was thrown down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐβλήθησαν (were thrown down).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) ἄλλο (another) θηρίον (beast) ἀναβαῖνον (rising) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), καὶ (and) εἶχεν (it had) κέρατα (horns) δύο (two) ὅμοια (like) ἀρνίῳ (a lamb), καὶ (and) ἐλάλει (it was speaking) ὡς (like) δράκων (a dragon). ¹² καὶ (And) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τοῦ (of the) πρώτου (first) θηρίου (beast) πᾶσαν (all) ποιεῖ (it exercises) ἐνώπιον (on behalf) αὐτοῦ (of it), καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (causes) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling), ἵνα (that) προσκυνήσουσιν (they will worship) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast) τὸ (-) πρῶτον (first), οὗ (of whom) ἐθεραπεύθη (had been healed) ἡ (the) πληγὴ (wound) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (fatal) αὐτοῦ (of it). ¹³ Καὶ (And) ποιεῖ (it works) σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (even) πῦρ (fire) ποιῇ (it should cause) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβαίνειν (to come down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) ἐνώπιον (in the presence) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) πλανᾷ (it deceives) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), διὰ (by reason of) τὰ (the) σημεῖα (signs) ἃ (that) ἐδόθη (were given) αὐτῷ (to it) ποιῆσαι (to perform) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θηρίου (beast), λέγων (telling) τοῖς (those) κατοικοῦσιν (dwelling) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ποιῆσαι (to make) εἰκόνα (an image) τῷ (to the) θηρίῳ (beast) ὃς (that) ἔχει (has) τὴν (the) πληγὴν (wound) τῆς (of the) μαχαίρης (sword) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (has lived). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ἐδόθη (there was given) αὐτῷ (to it) δοῦναι (to give) πνεῦμα (breath) τῇ (to the) εἰκόνι (image) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) λαλήσῃ (should speak) ἡ (the) εἰκὼν (image) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast), καὶ (and) ποιήσῃ (should cause) ἵνα (that) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) προσκυνήσωσιν (would worship) τῇ (the) εἰκόνι (image) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast) ἀποκτανθῶσιν (would be killed).

²⁰ καὶ (And) ἐπιάσθη (was captured) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ὁ (the) ψευδοπροφήτης (false prophet), ὁ (the one) ποιήσας (having done) τὰ (the) σημεῖα (signs) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (him), ἐν (by) οἷς (which) ἐπλάνησεν (he deceived) τοὺς (those) λαβόντας (having received) τὸ (the) χάραγμα (mark) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) προσκυνοῦντας (worshiping) τῇ (the) εἰκόνι (image) αὐτοῦ (of it), ζῶντες (living) ἐβλήθησαν (were cast) οἱ (the) δύο (two) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρὸς (of fire), τῆς (-) καιομένης (burning) ἐν (with) θείῳ (brimstone).

² καὶ (And) ἐκράτησεν (he seized) τὸν (the) δράκοντα (dragon), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), καὶ (and) ἔδησεν (bound) αὐτὸν (him) χίλια (for a thousand) ἔτη (years). ³ καὶ (And) ἔβαλεν (he cast) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἄβυσσον (Abyss), καὶ (and) ἔκλεισεν (shut) καὶ (and) ἐσφράγισεν (sealed it) ἐπάνω (over) αὐτοῦ (him), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) πλανήσῃ (he should deceive) ἔτι (any longer) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), ἄχρι (until) τελεσθῇ (were completed) τὰ (the) χίλια (thousand) ἔτη (years). μετὰ (After these) ταῦτα (things), δεῖ (it is necessary for) λυθῆναι (to be released) αὐτὸν (him) μικρὸν (for a little) χρόνον (time).

⁷ Καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) τελεσθῇ (shall have been completed) τὰ (the) χίλια (thousand) ἔτη (years), λυθήσεται (will be released) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) φυλακῆς (prison) αὐτοῦ (of him), ⁸ καὶ (and) ἐξελεύσεται (will go out) πλανῆσαι (to deceive) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations) τὰ (-) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) τέσσαρσιν (four) γωνίαις (corners) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), τὸν (-) Γὼγ (Gog) καὶ (and) Μαγώγ (Magog), συναγαγεῖν (to gather together) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (unto) τὸν (the) πόλεμον (war), ὧν (of whom) ὁ (the) ἀριθμὸς (number is) αὐτῶν (of them) ὡς (like) ἡ (the) ἄμμος (sand) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea).

¹⁷ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Μακάριος (Blessed) εἶ (are you), Σίμων (Simon) Βαριωνᾶ (Barjona)! ὅτι (For) σὰρξ (flesh) καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκάλυψέν (revealed it) σοι (to you), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

²⁴ “Ἀγωνίζεσθε (Strive) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) στενῆς (narrow) θύρας (door); ὅτι (for) πολλοί (many), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ζητήσουσιν (will seek) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσουσιν (will be able).

⁵³ καθ’ (Every) ἡμέραν (day) ὄντος (being) μου (of Me) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), οὐκ (not) ἐξετείνατε (did you stretch out) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπ’ (against) ἐμέ (Me); ἀλλ’ (but) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐξουσία (power) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness).”

³¹ νῦν (Now) κρίσις (the judgment) ἐστὶν (is) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this); νῦν (now) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (prince) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) ἐκβληθήσεται (will be cast) ἔξω (out).

³⁰ Οὐκέτι (No longer) πολλὰ (much) λαλήσω (I will speak) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you); ἔρχεται (comes) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) τοῦ (of this) κόσμου (world) ἄρχων (ruler), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (he has) οὐδέν (nothing);

¹¹ περὶ (concerning) δὲ (now) κρίσεως (judgment), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (ruler) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) κέκριται (has been judged).

¹⁸ ἀνοῖξαι (to open) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦ (that) ἐπιστρέψαι (they may turn) ἀπὸ (from) σκότους (darkness) εἰς (to) φῶς (light), καὶ (and) τῆς (from the) ἐξουσίας (power) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), τοῦ (that) λαβεῖν (may receive) αὐτοὺς (they) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) καὶ (and) κλῆρον (an inheritance) ἐν (among) τοῖς (those) ἡγιασμένοις (having been sanctified) πίστει (by faith) τῇ (that is) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me).’

³⁸ πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὔτε (neither) θάνατος (death), οὔτε (nor) ζωὴ (life), οὔτε (nor) ἄγγελοι (angels), οὔτε (nor) ἀρχαὶ (principalities), οὔτε (nor) ἐνεστῶτα (things present), οὔτε (nor) μέλλοντα (things to come), οὔτε (nor) δυνάμεις (powers),

²⁵ πᾶς (Everyone) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) ἀγωνιζόμενος (striving), πάντα (in all things) ἐγκρατεύεται (controls himself); ἐκεῖνοι (they) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (then), ἵνα (that) φθαρτὸν (a perishable) στέφανον (crown) λάβωσιν (they might receive), ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) ἄφθαρτον (an imperishable). ²⁶ ἐγὼ (I) τοίνυν (therefore) οὕτως (thus) τρέχω (run), ὡς (as) οὐκ (not) ἀδήλως (uncertainly); οὕτως (so) πυκτεύω (I fight), ὡς (as) οὐκ (not) ἀέρα (the air) δέρων (beating). ²⁷ ἀλλὰ (But) ὑπωπιάζω (I batter) μου (of me) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) καὶ (and) δουλαγωγῶ (bring it into servitude), μή (not) πως (hardly) ἄλλοις (to others) κηρύξας (having preached), αὐτὸς (myself) ἀδόκιμος (disqualified) γένωμαι (I might be).

⁵⁰ Τοῦτο (This) δέ (now) φημι (I say), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) σὰρξ (flesh) καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood), βασιλείαν (the kingdom) Θεοῦ (of God) κληρονομῆσαι (to inherit) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able), οὐδὲ (nor) ἡ (the) φθορὰ (decay), τὴν (the) ἀφθαρσίαν (immortality) κληρονομεῖ (does inherit).

¹⁶ ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me), ἵνα (that) εὐαγγελίζωμαι (I might preach) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), εὐθέως (immediately) οὐ (not) προσανεθέμην (I consulted) σαρκὶ (with flesh) καὶ (and) αἵματι (blood),

³ Εὐλογητὸς (Blessed be) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) Πατὴρ (Father) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὁ (the One) εὐλογήσας (having blessed) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (with) πάσῃ (every) εὐλογίᾳ (blessing) πνευματικῇ (spiritual) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ),

¹⁵ ἀπεκδυσάμενος (Having disarmed) τὰς (the) ἀρχὰς (rulers) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), ἐδειγμάτισεν (He made a show of them) ἐν (in) παρρησίᾳ (public), θριαμβεύσας (having triumphed) αὐτοὺς (over them) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it).

⁵ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἀθλῇ (competes) τις (anyone), οὐ (not) στεφανοῦται (he is crowned), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) νομίμως (lawfully) ἀθλήσῃ (he shall have competed).

¹ Τοιγαροῦν (Therefore) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we), τοσοῦτον (such a great) ἔχοντες (having) περικείμενον (encompassing) ἡμῖν (us) νέφος (a cloud) μαρτύρων (of witnesses), ὄγκον (weight) ἀποθέμενοι (having laid aside) πάντα (every), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) εὐπερίστατον (easily entangling) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), δι’ (with) ὑπομονῆς (endurance) τρέχωμεν (should run) τὸν (the) προκείμενον (lying before) ἡμῖν (us) ἀγῶνα (race),

⁴ Οὔπω (Not yet) μέχρις (unto) αἵματος (blood) ἀντικατέστητε (have you resisted), πρὸς (against) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἀνταγωνιζόμενοι (struggling),

²² ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (the right hand) [τοῦ] (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἰς (into) οὐρανόν (heaven), ὑποταγέντων (having been subjected) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἀγγέλων (angels) καὶ (and) ἐξουσιῶν (authorities) καὶ (and) δυνάμεων (powers).

¹³ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) πέτρας (rock), οἳ (those who) ὅταν (when) ἀκούσωσιν (they hear), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) δέχονται (receive) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) οὗτοι (these) ῥίζαν (a root) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (have), οἳ (who) πρὸς (for) καιρὸν (a time) πιστεύουσιν (believe), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (time) πειρασμοῦ (of testing) ἀφίστανται (fall away).

³⁶ ἀγρυπνεῖτε (Watch) δὲ (also) ἐν (at) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season), δεόμενοι (praying) ἵνα (that) κατισχύσητε (you may have strength) ἐκφυγεῖν (to escape) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) μέλλοντα (are about) γίνεσθαι (to come to pass) καὶ (and) σταθῆναι (to stand) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).”

⁶ Μηδεὶς (No one) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀπατάτω (let deceive) κενοῖς (with empty) λόγοις (words), διὰ (because of) ταῦτα (these things) γὰρ (for) ἔρχεται (comes) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπὶ (upon) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience).

¹⁶ ἐξαγοραζόμενοι (redeeming) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (because) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) πονηραί (evil) εἰσιν (are).

¹¹ ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πρὸς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑμᾶς (you) στῆναι (to stand) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) μεθοδείας (schemes) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil), ¹² ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡμῖν (to us) ἡ (the) πάλη (wrestling) πρὸς (against) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) σάρκα (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἀρχάς (rulers), πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), πρὸς (against) τοὺς (the) κοσμοκράτορας (cosmic powers) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness) τούτου (this), πρὸς (against) τὰ (the) πνευματικὰ (spiritual forces) τῆς (-) πονηρίας (of evil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms). ¹³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἀναλάβετε (take up) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) δυνηθῆτε (you may be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to withstand) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) πονηρᾷ (evil), καὶ (and) ἅπαντα (all things) κατεργασάμενοι (having done), στῆναι (to stand). ¹⁴ στῆτε (Stand) οὖν (therefore), περιζωσάμενοι (having girded) τὴν (the) ὀσφὺν (loins) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (with) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) θώρακα (breastplate) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), ¹⁵ καὶ (and) ὑποδησάμενοι (having shod) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἐν (with) ἑτοιμασίᾳ (the readiness) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace); ¹⁶ ἐν (besides) πᾶσιν (all), ἀναλαβόντες (having taken up) τὸν (the) θυρεὸν (shield) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith), ἐν (with) ᾧ (which) δυνήσεσθε (you will be able) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) βέλη (arrows) τοῦ (of the) πονηροῦ (evil one) τὰ (-) πεπυρωμένα (flaming) σβέσαι (to quench). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) τὴν (the) περικεφαλαίαν (helmet) τοῦ (-) σωτηρίου (of salvation) δέξασθε (take), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ῥῆμα (the word) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹⁰ Ὅτι (Because) ἐτήρησας (you have kept) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) ὑπομονῆς (patient endurance) μου (of Me), κἀγώ (I also) σε (you) τηρήσω (will keep) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) τοῦ (of the) πειρασμοῦ (trial) τῆς (-) μελλούσης (being about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) οἰκουμένης (inhabited world) ὅλης (whole), πειράσαι (to try) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

¹⁷ ὅτι (because) ἦλθεν (has come) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ἡ (-) μεγάλη (great) τῆς (of the) ὀργῆς (wrath) αὐτῶν (of Them), καὶ (and) τίς (who) δύναται (is able) σταθῆναι (to stand)?”

³⁵ Ἔστωσαν (Let be) ὑμῶν (your) αἱ (-) ὀσφύες (waist) περιεζωσμέναι (girded about), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) λύχνοι (lamps) καιόμενοι (burning);

⁹ ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) φωτὸς (light is) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) ἀγαθωσύνῃ (goodness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth)—

⁹ καὶ (And) εἶχον (they had) θώρακας (breastplates) ὡς (like) θώρακας (breastplates) σιδηροῦς (of iron), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) φωνὴ (sound) τῶν (of the) πτερύγων (wings) αὐτῶν (of them) ὡς (was as) φωνὴ (the sound) ἁρμάτων (of chariots) ἵππων (of horses) πολλῶν (many) τρεχόντων (rushing) εἰς (into) πόλεμον (battle).

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) οὕτως (thus) εἶδον (I saw) τοὺς (the) ἵππους (horses) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ὁράσει (vision), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) καθημένους (sitting) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῶν (them), ἔχοντας (having) θώρακας (breastplates) πυρίνους (fiery) καὶ (and) ὑακινθίνους (hyacinthine) καὶ (and) θειώδεις (brimstone). καὶ (And) αἱ (the) κεφαλαὶ (heads) τῶν (of the) ἵππων (horses were) ὡς (like) κεφαλαὶ (heads) λεόντων (of lions), καὶ (and) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) στομάτων (mouths) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκπορεύεται (proceed) πῦρ (fire), καὶ (and) καπνὸς (smoke), καὶ (and) θεῖον (brimstone).

²² Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Ταχὺ (Quickly) ἐξενέγκατε (bring out) στολὴν (robe) τὴν (the) πρώτην (best) καὶ (and) ἐνδύσατε (clothe) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) δότε (give) δακτύλιον (a ring) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ὑποδήματα (sandals) εἰς (for) τοὺς (his) πόδας (feet);

¹⁵ πῶς (How) δὲ (now) κηρύξωσιν (shall they preach) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀποσταλῶσιν (they are sent)? καθὼς* (As) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ὡς (How) ὡραῖοι (beautiful) οἱ (the) πόδες (feet) τῶν (of those) εὐαγγελιζομένων (proclaiming good news) ‹τὰ› (of) ἀγαθά (good things)!”

¹⁸ Τὰ (-) δὲ (And) πάντα (all things) ἐκ (are of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), τοῦ (the One) καταλλάξαντος (having reconciled) ἡμᾶς (us) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) διὰ (through) Χριστοῦ (Christ), καὶ (and) δόντος (having given) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) τῆς (-) καταλλαγῆς (of reconciliation), ¹⁹ ὡς (how) ὅτι (that) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) κόσμον (the world) καταλλάσσων (reconciling) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself), μὴ (not) λογιζόμενος (reckoning) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) θέμενος (having put) ἐν (into) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (-) καταλλαγῆς (of reconciliation). ²⁰ Ὑπὲρ (For) Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) πρεσβεύομεν (we are ambassadors), ὡς (as though) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) παρακαλοῦντος (is beseeching) δι’ (through) ἡμῶν (us). δεόμεθα (We implore) ὑπὲρ (on behalf) Χριστοῦ (of Christ): καταλλάγητε (Be reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ²¹ τὸν (The One) μὴ (not) γνόντα (having known) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐποίησεν (He made), ἵνα (so that) ἡμεῖς (we) γενώμεθα (might become) δικαιοσύνη (the righteousness) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).

²⁴ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) κυριεύομεν (we lord it over) ὑμῶν (your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλὰ (but) συνεργοί (fellow workers) ἐσμεν (are) τῆς (of the) χαρᾶς (joy) ὑμῶν (with you); τῇ (in the) γὰρ (for) πίστει (faith) ἑστήκατε (you stand firm).

¹⁶ Διὸ (Therefore) οὐκ (not) ἐγκακοῦμεν (we lose heart); ἀλλ’ (but) εἰ (if) καὶ (indeed) ὁ (the) ἔξω (outward) ἡμῶν (of us) ἄνθρωπος (man) διαφθείρεται (is being brought to decay), ἀλλ’ (yet) ὁ (the) ἔσω (inner) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀνακαινοῦται (is being renewed) ἡμέρᾳ (day) καὶ (and) ἡμέρᾳ (day). ¹⁷ τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) παραυτίκα (momentary) ἐλαφρὸν (lightness) τῆς (-) θλίψεως (affliction) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us), καθ’ (far) ὑπερβολὴν (surpassing) εἰς (to) ὑπερβολὴν (excessiveness) αἰώνιον (an eternal) βάρος (weight) δόξης (of glory) κατεργάζεται (is producing) ἡμῖν (for us), ¹⁸ μὴ (not) σκοπούντων (are looking at) ἡμῶν (we) τὰ (the things) βλεπόμενα (being seen), ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the things) μὴ (not) βλεπόμενα (being seen). τὰ (The things) γὰρ (for) βλεπόμενα (being seen are) πρόσκαιρα (temporary); τὰ (the things) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) βλεπόμενα (being seen) αἰώνια (are eternal).

¹⁷ ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) περισσότερον (more abundantly) βουλόμενος (desiring) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπιδεῖξαι (to show) τοῖς (to the) κληρονόμοις (heirs) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise) τὸ (the) ἀμετάθετον (unchangeableness) τῆς (of the) βουλῆς (purpose) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐμεσίτευσεν (guaranteed it) ὅρκῳ (by an oath), ¹⁸ ἵνα (so that) διὰ (by) δύο (two) πραγμάτων (things) ἀμεταθέτων (unchangeable), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) ἀδύνατον (it is impossible) ψεύσασθαι (to lie) [τὸν] (-) Θεόν (for God), ἰσχυρὰν (strong) παράκλησιν (encouragement) ἔχωμεν (we may have), οἱ (-) καταφυγόντες (having fled for refuge), κρατῆσαι (to take hold) τῆς (of the) προκειμένης (being set before us) ἐλπίδος (hope),

²⁴ Πίστει (By faith) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), μέγας (grown) γενόμενος (having become), ἠρνήσατο (refused) λέγεσθαι (to be called) υἱὸς (the son) θυγατρὸς (of the daughter) Φαραώ (of Pharaoh), ²⁵ μᾶλλον (rather) ἑλόμενος (having chosen) συνκακουχεῖσθαι (to suffer affliction with) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἢ (than) πρόσκαιρον (the temporary) ἔχειν (to have) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) ἀπόλαυσιν (enjoyment), ²⁶ μείζονα (greater) πλοῦτον (wealth) ἡγησάμενος (having esteemed) τῶν (than the) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt) θησαυρῶν (treasures) τὸν (the) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ); ἀπέβλεπεν (he was looking) γὰρ (for) εἰς (toward) τὴν (the) μισθαποδοσίαν (reward). ²⁷ Πίστει (By faith) κατέλιπεν (he left) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt), μὴ (not) φοβηθεὶς (having feared) τὸν (the) θυμὸν (anger) τοῦ (of the) βασιλέως (king); τὸν (the) γὰρ (for) ἀόρατον (Invisible One) ὡς (as) ὁρῶν (seeing), ἐκαρτέρησεν (he persevered). ²⁸ Πίστει (By faith) πεποίηκεν (he has kept) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) πρόσχυσιν (sprinkling) τοῦ (of the) αἵματος (blood), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὁ (the one) ὀλοθρεύων (destroying) τὰ (the) πρωτότοκα (firstborn) θίγῃ (would touch) αὐτῶν (them). ²⁹ Πίστει (By faith) διέβησαν (they passed through) τὴν (the) Ἐρυθρὰν (Red) Θάλασσαν (Sea), ὡς (as) διὰ (through) ξηρᾶς (dry) γῆς (land), ἧς (which) πεῖραν (an attempt) λαβόντες (having made), οἱ (the) Αἰγύπτιοι (Egyptians) κατεπόθησαν (were swallowed up). ³⁰ Πίστει (By faith) τὰ (the) τείχη (walls) Ἰεριχὼ (of Jericho) ἔπεσαν (fell), κυκλωθέντα (having been encircled) ἐπὶ (for) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἡμέρας (days). ³¹ Πίστει (By faith) Ῥαὰβ (Rahab) ἡ (the) πόρνη (prostitute) οὐ (not) συναπώλετο (did perish with) τοῖς (those) ἀπειθήσασιν (having disobeyed), δεξαμένη (having received) τοὺς (the) κατασκόπους (spies) μετ’ (with) εἰρήνης (peace). ³² Καὶ (And) τί (what) ἔτι (more) λέγω (shall I say)? ἐπιλείψει (Will fail) με (me) γὰρ (for) διηγούμενον (telling) ὁ (the) χρόνος (time), περὶ (of) Γεδεών (Gideon), Βαράκ (Barak), Σαμψών (Samson), Ἰεφθάε (Jephthah), Δαυίδ (David) τε (also), καὶ (and) Σαμουὴλ (Samuel), καὶ (and) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets), ³³ οἳ (who) διὰ (by) πίστεως (faith) κατηγωνίσαντο (conquered) βασιλείας (kingdoms), εἰργάσαντο* (administered) δικαιοσύνην (justice), ἐπέτυχον (obtained) ἐπαγγελιῶν (promises); ἔφραξαν (shut) στόματα (the mouths) λεόντων (of lions), ³⁴ ἔσβεσαν (quenched) δύναμιν (the power) πυρός (of fire), ἔφυγον (escaped) στόματα (the mouths) μαχαίρης (of the sword); ἐδυναμώθησαν (acquired strength) ἀπὸ (out of) ἀσθενείας (weakness), ἐγενήθησαν (became) ἰσχυροὶ (mighty) ἐν (in) πολέμῳ (war), παρεμβολὰς (the armies) ἔκλιναν (put to flight) ἀλλοτρίων (of foreigners).

⁸ Νήψατε (Be sober-minded); γρηγορήσατε (watch). ὁ (The) ἀντίδικος (adversary) ὑμῶν (of You), διάβολος (the devil), ὡς (as) λέων (a lion) ὠρυόμενος (roaring) περιπατεῖ (prowls about), ζητῶν (seeking) τινα (whom) καταπιεῖν (to devour), ⁹ ᾧ (whom) ἀντίστητε (you should resist), στερεοὶ (firm) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), εἰδότες (knowing) τὰ (the) αὐτὰ (same) τῶν (-) παθημάτων (sufferings) τῇ (-) ἐν (throughout) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὑμῶν (in your) ἀδελφότητι (brotherhood) ἐπιτελεῖσθαι (to be accomplished).

⁴ ὅτι (For) πᾶν (everyone) τὸ (-) γεγεννημένον (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) νικᾷ (overcomes) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world); καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) νίκη (victory) ἡ (-) νικήσασα (having overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world): ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ἡμῶν (of us). ⁵ Τίς (Who) ‹δέ› (now) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) νικῶν (overcoming) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)?

⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἐπ’ (by) ἄρτῳ (bread) μόνῳ (alone) ζήσεται (shall live) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man), Ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπὶ (by) παντὶ (every) ῥήματι (word) ἐκπορευομένῳ (coming out) διὰ (of) στόματος (the mouth) Θεοῦ (of God).’”

⁷ Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πάλιν (Again) γέγραπται (it has been written): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἐκπειράσεις (you shall test) Κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you).’”

¹⁰ Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὕπαγε (Get you away), Σατανᾶ (Satan); γέγραπται (it has been written) γάρ (for): ‘Κύριον (The Lord) τὸν (the) θεόν (God) σου (of you), προσκυνήσεις (you shall worship), καὶ (and) αὐτῷ (Him) μόνῳ (alone) λατρεύσεις (shall you serve).’” ¹¹ Τότε (Then) ἀφίησιν (leaves) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἄγγελοι (angels) προσῆλθον (came) καὶ (and) διηκόνουν (were ministering) αὐτῷ (to Him). ¹² Ζῶν (Living is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἐνεργὴς (active), καὶ (and) τομώτερος (sharper) ὑπὲρ (than) πᾶσαν (any) μάχαιραν (sword) δίστομον (two-edged), καὶ (even) διϊκνούμενος (penetrating) ἄχρι (as far as) μερισμοῦ (the division) ψυχῆς (of soul) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἁρμῶν (of joints) τε (and) καὶ (also) μυελῶν (marrows), καὶ (and) κριτικὸς (able to judge) ἐνθυμήσεων (the thoughts) καὶ (and) ἐννοιῶν (intentions) καρδίας (of the heart).

⁵ καὶ (and) ἐκλέλησθε (you have forgotten) τῆς (the) παρακλήσεως (exhortation) ἥτις (that) ὑμῖν (you) ὡς (as) υἱοῖς (to sons) διαλέγεται (addresses): “Υἱέ (Son) μου (of Me), μὴ (not) ὀλιγώρει (regard lightly) παιδείας (the discipline) Κυρίου (of the Lord), μηδὲ (nor) ἐκλύου (faint), ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐλεγχόμενος (being reproved). ⁶ ὃν (Whom) γὰρ (for) ἀγαπᾷ (He loves), Κύριος (the Lord) παιδεύει (disciplines); μαστιγοῖ (He scourges) δὲ (now) πάντα (every) υἱὸν (son) ὃν (whom) παραδέχεται (He receives).

⁵ Ἀφιλάργυρος (Let be without covetousness) ὁ (your) τρόπος (manner of life), ἀρκούμενοι (being satisfied) τοῖς (with the) παροῦσιν (present); αὐτὸς (He Himself) γὰρ (for) εἴρηκεν (has said): “Οὐ (Never) μή (not) σε (you) ἀνῶ (will I leave), οὐδ’ (nor) οὐ (never) μή (not) σε (you) ἐγκαταλίπω (will I forsake).” ⁶ Ὥστε (So) θαρροῦντας (are confident) ἡμᾶς (we) λέγειν (to say): “Κύριος (The Lord is) ἐμοὶ (my) βοηθός (helper), [καὶ] (and) οὐ (not) φοβηθήσομαι (I will be afraid); τί (what) ποιήσει (shall do) μοι (to me) ἄνθρωπος (man)?”

¹⁶ καὶ (and) ἔχων (He is holding) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δεξιᾷ (right) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀστέρας (stars) ἑπτά (seven), καὶ (and) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ῥομφαία (a sword) δίστομος (two-edged) ὀξεῖα (sharp) ἐκπορευομένη (is going forth); καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ὄψις (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὡς (is like) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun) φαίνει (shining) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δυνάμει (full strength) αὐτοῦ (of it).

¹⁶ μετανόησον (Repent) οὖν (therefore)! εἰ (If) δὲ (however) μή (not), ἔρχομαί (I am coming) σοι (to you) ταχύ (quickly), καὶ (and) πολεμήσω (I will make war) μετ’ (against) αὐτῶν (them) ἐν (with) τῇ (the) ῥομφαίᾳ (sword) τοῦ (of the) στόματός (mouth) μου (of Me).

¹¹ καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐνίκησαν (have overcome) αὐτὸν (him) διὰ (by reason) τὸ (of the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), καὶ (and) διὰ (by reason of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) μαρτυρίας (testimony) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠγάπησαν (they have loved) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτῶν (of them) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐκπορεύεται (goes forth) ῥομφαία (a sword) ὀξεῖα (sharp), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (with) αὐτῇ (it) πατάξῃ (He may strike down) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations); καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (He) ποιμανεῖ (will shepherd) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (with) ῥάβδῳ (a rod) σιδηρᾷ (of iron). καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) πατεῖ (treads) τὴν (the) ληνὸν (press) τοῦ (of the) οἴνου (wine) τοῦ (of the) θυμοῦ (fury) τῆς (of the) ὀργῆς (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τοῦ (the) Παντοκράτορος (Almighty).

²⁵ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἐλθοῦσα (having come), προσεκύνει (she was worshiping) αὐτῷ (Him), λέγουσα (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), βοήθει (help) μοι (me)!” ²⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (it is) καλὸν (right) λαβεῖν (to take) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread) τῶν (of the) τέκνων (children), καὶ (and) βαλεῖν (to cast it) τοῖς (to the) κυναρίοις (dogs).” ²⁷ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said), “Ναί (Yes), κύριε (Lord); καὶ (even) γὰρ (however) τὰ (the) κυνάρια (dogs) ἐσθίει (eat) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) ψιχίων (crumbs) τῶν (-) πιπτόντων (falling) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) τῶν (of the) κυρίων (masters) αὐτῶν (of them).” ²⁸ Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Ὦ (O) γύναι (woman), μεγάλη (great is) σου (of you) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith)! γενηθήτω (Be it) σοι (to you) ὡς (as) θέλεις (you desire).” καὶ (And) ἰάθη (was healed) ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) αὐτῆς (of her) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ἐκείνης (that).

⁴¹ γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (you enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation). τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πνεῦμα (spirit) πρόθυμον (is willing), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) σὰρξ (the flesh) ἀσθενής (weak).”

³³ Βλέπετε (Take heed); ἀγρυπνεῖτε (watch); οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) γὰρ (for) πότε (when) ὁ (the) καιρός (time) ἐστιν (is).

³⁸ γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἔλθητε (you may enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation). τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πνεῦμα (spirit) πρόθυμον (is willing), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) σὰρξ (the flesh) ἀσθενής (weak).”

⁵ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τίς (Who) ἐξ (among) ὑμῶν (you) ἕξει (will have) φίλον (a friend), καὶ (and) πορεύσεται (will go) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) μεσονυκτίου (at midnight) καὶ (and) εἴπῃ (say) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Φίλε (Friend), χρῆσόν (lend) μοι (me) τρεῖς (three) ἄρτους (loaves), ⁶ ἐπειδὴ (since) φίλος (a friend) μου (of my) παρεγένετο (is come) ἐξ (off) ὁδοῦ (a journey) πρός (to) με (me), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχω (I have) ὃ (what) παραθήσω (I will set before) αὐτῷ (him).’ ⁷ Κἀκεῖνος (And he) ἔσωθεν (from within) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἴπῃ (will say), ‘Μή (Not) μοι (me) κόπους (trouble) πάρεχε (cause); ἤδη (already) ἡ (the) θύρα (door) κέκλεισται (has been shut), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) παιδία (children) μου (of me) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (me) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) κοίτην (bed) εἰσίν (are); οὐ (not) δύναμαι (I am able) ἀναστὰς (having risen up), δοῦναί (to give) σοι (to you).’ ⁸ Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), εἰ (if) καὶ (even) οὐ (not) δώσει (he will give) αὐτῷ (to him), ἀναστὰς (having risen up), διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) εἶναι (being) φίλον (friend) αὐτοῦ (of him), διά (because of) γε (yet) τὴν (the) ἀναίδειαν (persistence) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐγερθεὶς (having risen) δώσει (he will give) αὐτῷ (him) ὅσων (as much as) χρῄζει (he needs).

¹ Ἔλεγεν (He was speaking) δὲ (then) παραβολὴν (a parable) αὐτοῖς (to them) πρὸς (about) τὸ (the way) δεῖν (it behooves) πάντοτε (always) προσεύχεσθαι (to pray) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἐνκακεῖν (to lose heart), ² λέγων (saying), “Κριτής (A judge) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) ἔν (in) τινι (a certain) πόλει (city), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) μὴ (not) φοβούμενος (fearing) καὶ (and) ἄνθρωπον (man) μὴ (not) ἐντρεπόμενος (respecting). ³ χήρα (A widow) δὲ (then) ἦν (there was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) ἤρχετο (she was coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him), λέγουσα (saying), ‘Ἐκδίκησόν (Avenge) με (me) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) ἀντιδίκου (adversary) μου (of me).’ ⁴ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he would) ἐπὶ (for) χρόνον (a time); μετὰ (afterward) ταῦτα (he) δὲ (however) εἶπεν (said) ἐν (within) ἑαυτῷ (himself), ‘Εἰ (If) καὶ (even) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) οὐ (not) φοβοῦμαι (I fear), οὐδὲ (nor) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐντρέπομαι (respect), ⁵ διά (because) γε (yet) τὸ (-) παρέχειν (causes) μοι (me) κόπον (trouble) τὴν (the) χήραν (widow) ταύτην (this), ἐκδικήσω (I will avenge) αὐτήν (her), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) τέλος (end) ἐρχομένη (coming), ὑπωπιάζῃ (she exhaust) με (me).’” ⁶ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Ἀκούσατε (Hear) τί (what) ὁ (the) κριτὴς (judge) τῆς (-) ἀδικίας (unrighteous) λέγει (says). ⁷ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Θεὸς (God) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ποιήσῃ (shall execute) τὴν (the) ἐκδίκησιν (avenging) τῶν (of the) ἐκλεκτῶν (elect) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τῶν (the ones) βοώντων (crying out) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡμέρας (day) καὶ (and) νυκτός (night), καὶ (and) μακροθυμεῖ (be deferring) ἐπ’ (in regard to) αὐτοῖς (them)? ⁸ λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ποιήσει (He will execute) τὴν (the) ἐκδίκησιν (avenging) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) τάχει (quickness). πλὴν (Nevertheless), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐλθὼν (having come), ἆρα (indeed) εὑρήσει (will He find) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth)?”

⁴⁶ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (Why) καθεύδετε (are you sleeping)? ἀναστάντες (Having risen up) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (you might enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation).”

¹⁴ οὗτοι (These) πάντες (all) ἦσαν (were) προσκαρτεροῦντες (steadfastly continuing) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (in prayer), σὺν (with the) γυναιξὶν (women), καὶ (and) Μαριὰμ (Mary) τῇ (the) μητρὶ (mother) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), καὶ (and) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁴ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (now) τῇ (in the) προσευχῇ (prayer) καὶ (and) τῇ (the) διακονίᾳ (ministry) τοῦ (of the) λόγου (word) προσκαρτερήσομεν (will steadfastly continue).”

² εὐσεβὴς (devout) καὶ (and) φοβούμενος (fearing) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) σὺν (with) παντὶ (all) τῷ (the) οἴκῳ (household) αὐτοῦ (of him), ποιῶν (doing) ἐλεημοσύνας (alms) πολλὰς (many) τῷ (to the) λαῷ (people), καὶ (and) δεόμενος (praying) τοῦ (to) Θεοῦ (God) διὰ (continually) παντός (all).

⁵ Ὁ (-) μὲν (Indeed) οὖν (therefore) Πέτρος (Peter) ἐτηρεῖτο (was kept) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison); προσευχὴ (prayer) δὲ (however) ἦν (was) ἐκτενῶς (fervent) γινομένη (being made) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (him).

¹⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δουλείας (of bondage) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) υἱοθεσίας (of divine adoption as sons), ἐν (by) ᾧ (whom) κράζομεν (we cry), “Ἀββᾶ (Abba)! ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father)!”

²⁶ Ὡσαύτως (Likewise) δὲ (now) καὶ (also), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) συναντιλαμβάνεται (joins to help) τῇ (the) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness) ἡμῶν (of us); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) τί (things which) προσευξώμεθα (we should pray for) καθὸ (as) δεῖ (it behooves), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know), ἀλλὰ (but) αὐτὸ (Himself) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὑπερεντυγχάνει (makes intercession), στεναγμοῖς (with groanings) ἀλαλήτοις (inexpressible). ²⁷ ὁ (The One) δὲ (now) ἐραυνῶν (searching) τὰς (-) καρδίας (hearts) οἶδεν (knows) τί (what is) τὸ (the) φρόνημα (mindset) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), ὅτι (because) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God), ἐντυγχάνει (He intercedes) ὑπὲρ (for) ἁγίων (the saints).

¹² τῇ (-) ἐλπίδι (in hope) χαίροντες (rejoicing), τῇ (-) θλίψει (in tribulation) ὑπομένοντες (being patient), τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (in prayer) προσκαρτεροῦντες (being constant),

⁶ Ὅτι (Because) δέ (now) ἐστε (you are) υἱοί (sons), ἐξαπέστειλεν (sent forth) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us), κρᾶζον (crying out), “Ἀββᾶ (Abba), ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father)!”

¹⁶ οὐ (not) παύομαι (do cease) εὐχαριστῶν (giving thanks) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), μνείαν (mention) ποιούμενος (making) ἐπὶ (in) τῶν (the) προσευχῶν (prayers) μου (of me),

²² ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) συνοικοδομεῖσθε (are being built together) εἰς (for) κατοικητήριον (a habitation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit).

⁸ Ἐμοὶ (To me), τῷ (the) ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ (very least) πάντων (of all) ἁγίων (saints), ἐδόθη (was given) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὕτη (this): τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach) τὸ (the) ἀνεξιχνίαστον (unsearchable) πλοῦτος (riches) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹⁸ ἵνα (so that) ἐξισχύσητε (you may be fully able) καταλαβέσθαι (to comprehend) σὺν (with) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints) τί (what is) τὸ (the) πλάτος (breadth) καὶ (and) μῆκος (length) καὶ (and) ὕψος (height) καὶ (and) βάθος (depth),

¹⁹ καὶ (and also) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me), ἵνα (that) μοι (to me) δοθῇ (may be given) λόγος (divine utterance) ἐν (in) ἀνοίξει (the opening) τοῦ (of the) στόματός (mouth) μου (of me), ἐν (with) παρρησίᾳ (boldness) γνωρίσαι (to make known) τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel),

⁴ πάντοτε (always) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (every) δεήσει (supplication) μου (of me) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ὑμῶν (of you), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) τὴν (the) δέησιν (supplication) ποιούμενος (making)

⁶ Μηδὲν (Nothing) μεριμνᾶτε (be anxious about), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything), τῇ (by) προσευχῇ (prayer) καὶ (and) τῇ (-) δεήσει (supplication), μετὰ (with) εὐχαριστίας (thanksgiving), τὰ (the) αἰτήματα (requests) ὑμῶν (of you) γνωριζέσθω (let be made known) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).

⁴ ἀκούσαντες (having heard of) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) ἣν (that) ἔχετε (you have) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἁγίους (saints),

² Τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (In prayer) προσκαρτερεῖτε (continue steadfastly), γρηγοροῦντες (watching) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it) ἐν (with) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving),

¹⁷ ἀδιαλείπτως (Unceasingly) προσεύχεσθε (pray).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore), πρῶτον (first) πάντων (of all), ποιεῖσθαι (to be made) δεήσεις (entreaties), προσευχάς (prayers), ἐντεύξεις (intercessions), εὐχαριστίας (and thanksgivings), ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) πάντων (all) ἀνθρώπων (men),

³ Χάριν (Thankful) ἔχω (I am) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ᾧ (whom) λατρεύω (I serve) ἀπὸ (from) προγόνων (my forefathers) ἐν (with) καθαρᾷ (a pure) συνειδήσει (conscience), ὡς (as) ἀδιάλειπτον (unceasingly) ἔχω (I have) τὴν (the) περὶ (of) σοῦ (you) μνείαν (remembrance) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) δεήσεσίν (prayers) μου (of me) νυκτὸς (night) καὶ (and) ἡμέρας (day),

⁷ Ὃς (He) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δεήσεις (prayers) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἱκετηρίας (supplications), πρὸς (to) τὸν (the One) δυνάμενον (being able) σῴζειν (to save) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (from) θανάτου (death), μετὰ (with) κραυγῆς (crying) ἰσχυρᾶς (loud) καὶ (and) δακρύων (tears) προσενέγκας (having offered up), καὶ (and) εἰσακουσθεὶς (having been heard), ἀπὸ (because of) τῆς (-) εὐλαβείας (reverence),

⁷ Πάντων (Of all) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) τέλος (end) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). σωφρονήσατε (Be clear-minded) οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) νήψατε (sober) εἰς (for the purpose of) προσευχάς (prayers),

²⁰ Ὑμεῖς (You) δέ (however), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ἐποικοδομοῦντες (building up) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves), τῇ (in the) ἁγιωτάτῃ (most holy) ὑμῶν (of you) πίστει (faith) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) προσευχόμενοι (praying),

⁴ καὶ (And) ἐπλήσθησαν (they were filled with) πάντες (all) Πνεύματος (Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), καὶ (and) ἤρξαντο (began) λαλεῖν (to speak) ἑτέραις (in other) γλώσσαις (tongues) καθὼς (as) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐδίδου (was giving) ἀποφθέγγεσθαι (to utter forth) αὐτοῖς (to them).

¹³ Θεωροῦντες (Seeing) δὲ (now) τὴν (the) τοῦ (-) Πέτρου (of Peter) παρρησίαν (boldness), καὶ (and) Ἰωάννου (of John), καὶ (and) καταλαβόμενοι (having understood) ὅτι (that) ἄνθρωποι (men) ἀγράμματοί (unschooled) εἰσιν (they are), καὶ (and) ἰδιῶται (ordinary), ἐθαύμαζον (they were astonished). ἐπεγίνωσκόν (They recognized) τε (then) αὐτοὺς (them), ὅτι (that) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἦσαν (they had been).

²⁹ καὶ (And) τὰ (-) νῦν (now), Κύριε (Lord), ἔπιδε (look) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰς (the) ἀπειλὰς (threats) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) δὸς (grant) τοῖς (to the) δούλοις (servants) σου (of You) μετὰ (with) παρρησίας (boldness) πάσης (all) λαλεῖν (to speak) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) σου (of You),

³¹ Καὶ (And) δεηθέντων (having prayed) αὐτῶν (they), ἐσαλεύθη (was shaken) ὁ (the) τόπος (place) ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) ἦσαν (they were) συνηγμένοι (assembled), καὶ (and) ἐπλήσθησαν (they were filled with) ἅπαντες (all) τοῦ (the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit) καὶ (and) ἐλάλουν (were speaking) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μετὰ (with) παρρησίας (boldness).

²⁷ Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) δὲ (however), ἐπιλαβόμενος (having taken) αὐτὸν (him), ἤγαγεν (brought him) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀποστόλους (apostles), καὶ (and) διηγήσατο (he related) αὐτοῖς (to them) πῶς (how) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road) εἶδεν (he had seen) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἐλάλησεν (He had spoken) αὐτῷ (to him), καὶ (and) πῶς (how) ἐν (in) Δαμασκῷ (Damascus) ἐπαρρησιάσατο (he had spoken boldly) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) ‹τοῦ› (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus).

²⁹ ἐλάλει (He was speaking) τε (also) καὶ (and) συνεζήτει (was debating) πρὸς (with) τοὺς (the) Ἑλληνιστάς (Hellenists); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) ἐπεχείρουν (they were seeking) ἀνελεῖν (to kill) αὐτόν (him).

⁴⁶ Παρρησιασάμενοί (Having spoken boldly) τε (also), ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) εἶπαν (said), “Ὑμῖν (To you) ἦν (it was) ἀναγκαῖον (necessary) πρῶτον (first) λαληθῆναι (to be spoken) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ἐπειδὴ (but since) ἀπωθεῖσθε (you thrust away) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀξίους (worthy) κρίνετε (you judge) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τῆς (-) αἰωνίου (of eternal) ζωῆς (life), ἰδοὺ (behold), στρεφόμεθα (we are turning) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles).

³ ἱκανὸν (A long) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) χρόνον (time) διέτριψαν (they stayed), παρρησιαζόμενοι (speaking boldly) ἐπὶ (for) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), τῷ (the One) μαρτυροῦντι (bearing witness) ἐπὶ (to) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him), διδόντι (granting) σημεῖα (signs) καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders) γίνεσθαι (to be done) διὰ (through) τῶν (the) χειρῶν (hands) αὐτῶν (of them).

²⁶ οὗτός (He) τε (then) ἤρξατο (began) παρρησιάζεσθαι (to speak boldly) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue). ἀκούσαντες (Having heard) δὲ (however) αὐτοῦ (him) Πρίσκιλλα (Priscilla) καὶ (and) Ἀκύλας (Aquila), προσελάβοντο (they took to them) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἀκριβέστερον (more accurately) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐξέθεντο (expounded) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God).

⁸ Εἰσελθὼν (Having entered) δὲ (then) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγὴν (synagogue), ἐπαρρησιάζετο (he was speaking boldly) ἐπὶ (for) μῆνας (months) τρεῖς (three), διαλεγόμενος (reasoning) καὶ (and) πείθων (persuading) [τὰ] (-) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

³¹ κηρύσσων (proclaiming) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) διδάσκων (teaching) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) παρρησίας (boldness) ἀκωλύτως (unhinderedly).

³⁰ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) καὶ (and) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), συναγωνίσασθαί (to strive together with) μοι (me) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) προσευχαῖς (prayers) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),

⁵ ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything) ἐπλουτίσθητε (you have been enriched) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐν (in) παντὶ (all) λόγῳ (speech) καὶ (and) πάσῃ (all) γνώσει (knowledge),

⁷ ἀλλὰ (But) λαλοῦμεν (we speak) Θεοῦ (of God) σοφίαν (wisdom) ἐν (in) μυστηρίῳ (a mystery), τὴν (-) ἀποκεκρυμμένην (having been hidden), ἣν (which) προώρισεν (foreordained) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πρὸ (before) τῶν (the) αἰώνων (ages) εἰς (for) δόξαν (glory) ἡμῶν (of us),

¹ Οὕτως (So) ἡμᾶς (us), λογιζέσθω (let regard) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ὡς (as) ὑπηρέτας (servants) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) καὶ (and) οἰκονόμους (stewards) μυστηρίων (of the mysteries) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹¹ συνυπουργούντων (joining together) καὶ (also) ὑμῶν (of you) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) τῇ (by) δεήσει (supplication), ἵνα (so that) ἐκ (by) πολλῶν (many) προσώπων (persons), τὸ (for the) εἰς (toward) ἡμᾶς (us) χάρισμα (grace bestowed), διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many), εὐχαριστηθῇ (thanks may be given) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us).

¹² Ἔχοντες (Having) οὖν (therefore) τοιαύτην (such) ἐλπίδα (hope), πολλῇ (great) παρρησίᾳ (boldness) χρώμεθα (we use),

³³ Τότε (Then) ἐγγίσας (having drawn near), ὁ (the) χιλίαρχος (commander) ἐπελάβετο (laid hold) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἐκέλευσεν (commanded him) δεθῆναι (to be bound) ἁλύσεσι (with chains) δυσί (two), καὶ (and) ἐπυνθάνετο (began inquiring) τίς (who) εἴη (he might be) καὶ (and) τί (what) ἐστιν (it is) πεποιηκώς (he has been doing).

⁷ Τὰ (The things) κατ’ (concerning) ἐμὲ (me) πάντα (all) γνωρίσει (will make known) ὑμῖν (to you) Τυχικὸς (Tychicus), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητὸς (beloved) ἀδελφὸς (brother) καὶ (and) πιστὸς (faithful) διάκονος (servant) καὶ (and) σύνδουλος (fellow bond-servant) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), ⁸ ὃν (whom) ἔπεμψα (I sent) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (for) αὐτὸ (this very) τοῦτο (purpose), ἵνα (that) γνῶτε (you might know) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) ἡμῶν (us), καὶ (and) παρακαλέσῃ (he may encourage) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you),

² καὶ (and) ἐπέμψαμεν (we sent) Τιμόθεον (Timothy), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) συνεργὸν* (fellow worker) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) στηρίξαι (to strengthen) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) παρακαλέσαι (to encourage) ὑπὲρ (concerning) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you),

¹⁷ παρακαλέσαι (may He encourage) ὑμῶν (your) τὰς (-) καρδίας (hearts) καὶ (and) στηρίξαι (may He strengthen them) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) ἔργῳ (work) καὶ (and) λόγῳ (word) ἀγαθῷ (good).

²⁷ Εἰρήνην (Peace) ἀφίημι (I leave) ὑμῖν (with you); εἰρήνην (peace) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (My) δίδωμι (I give) ὑμῖν (to you); οὐ (not) καθὼς (as) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) δίδωσιν (gives), ἐγὼ (I) δίδωμι (give) ὑμῖν (to you). μὴ (Not) ταρασσέσθω (let be troubled) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart), μηδὲ (nor) δειλιάτω (let it fear).

⁷ Πᾶσιν (To all) τοῖς (those) οὖσιν (being) ἐν (in) Ῥώμῃ (Rome), ἀγαπητοῖς (beloved) Θεοῦ (of God), κλητοῖς (called) ἁγίοις (saints): Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Κυρίου (the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

³ Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (Father) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Κυρίου (the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁶ ἐν (In) γὰρ (for) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), οὔτε (neither) περιτομή (circumcision) τι (any) ἰσχύει (has power), οὔτε (nor) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision); ἀλλὰ (but only) πίστις (faith) δι’ (through) ἀγάπης (love) ἐνεργουμένη (working).

¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ὅσοι (as many as) τῷ (those who) κανόνι (rule) τούτῳ (by this) στοιχήσουσιν (will walk), εἰρήνη (peace be) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτοὺς (them), καὶ (and) ἔλεος (mercy); καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

³ Εὐχαριστεῖν (To thank) ὀφείλομεν (we ought) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) πάντοτε (always) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), καθὼς (just as) ἄξιόν (fitting) ἐστιν (it is), ὅτι (because) ὑπεραυξάνει (is increasing exceedingly) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πλεονάζει (is abounding) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) ἑνὸς (of one) ἑκάστου (each) πάντων (of all) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another);

¹⁶ Αὐτὸς (Himself) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace) δῴη (may give) ὑμῖν (you) τὴν (-) εἰρήνην (peace) διὰ (through) παντὸς (all), ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) τρόπῳ (way). ὁ (The) Κύριος (Lord be) μετὰ (with) πάντων (all) ὑμῶν (of you).

³ Καθὼς (Just as) παρεκάλεσά (I urged) σε (you) προσμεῖναι (to remain) ἐν (in) Ἐφέσῳ (Ephesus), πορευόμενος (when I was going) εἰς (to) Μακεδονίαν (Macedonia), ἵνα (so that) παραγγείλῃς (you might warn) τισὶν (certain men) μὴ (not) ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖν (to teach other doctrines),

¹⁴ ὑπερεπλεόνασεν (Surpassingly increased) δὲ (then) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), μετὰ (with) πίστεως (the faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), τῆς (that are) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁸ εἰ (If) δέ (now) τις (anyone) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own), καὶ (and) μάλιστα (especially his) οἰκείων (household), οὐ (not) προνοεῖ (does provide for), τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ἤρνηται (he has denied), καὶ (and) ἔστιν (he is) ἀπίστου (than an unbeliever) χείρων (worse).

⁵ ἀκούων (hearing) σου (of your) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ἣν (that) ἔχεις (you have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἁγίους (saints), ⁶ ὅπως (so that) ἡ (the) κοινωνία (fellowship) τῆς (of the) πίστεώς (faith) σου (of you), ἐνεργὴς (effective) γένηται (might become) ἐν (in) ἐπιγνώσει (the acknowledgment) παντὸς (of every) ἀγαθοῦ (good thing) τοῦ (that is) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us), εἰς (in) Χριστόν (Christ). ⁷ χαρὰν (Joy) γὰρ (for) πολλὴν (great) ἔσχον (I have), καὶ (and) παράκλησιν (encouragement) ἐπὶ (by occasion of) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) σου (of you), ὅτι (because) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (hearts) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) ἀναπέπαυται (have been refreshed) διὰ (by) σοῦ (you), ἀδελφέ (brother).

¹⁴ Ἀσπάσασθε (Greet) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἐν (with) φιλήματι (a kiss) ἀγάπης (of love). Εἰρήνη (Peace be) ὑμῖν (to you) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (who are) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ).

⁴ Ἰωάννης (John), Ταῖς (To the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἐκκλησίαις (churches) ταῖς (-) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἀσίᾳ (Asia): Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) ἀπὸ (from) ὁ (Him) ὢν (being) καὶ (and) ὁ (who) ἦν (was) καὶ (and) ὁ (who) ἐρχόμενος (is coming), καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) Πνευμάτων (Spirits) ἃ (-) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

¹³ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) εἰσενέγκῃς (lead) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation), Ἀλλὰ (but) ῥῦσαι (deliver) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil).’

³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (soul) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) διανοίᾳ (mind) σου (of you).’

²⁰ διδάσκοντες (teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) τηρεῖν (to observe) πάντα (all things), ὅσα (whatever) ἐνετειλάμην (I commanded) ὑμῖν (you). καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰμι (am) πάσας (all) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days), ἕως (until) τῆς (the) συντελείας (completion) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age).”

¹⁵ Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἠρίστησαν (they had dined), λέγει (says) τῷ (-) Σίμωνι (to Simon) Πέτρῳ (Peter) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Σίμων (Simon) Ἰωάννου (son of John), ἀγαπᾷς (love you) με (Me) πλέον (more) τούτων (than these)?” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord); σὺ (You) οἶδας (know) ὅτι (that) φιλῶ (I dearly love) σε (You).” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Βόσκε (Feed) τὰ (the) ἀρνία (lambs) μου (of Me).” ¹⁶ Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him) πάλιν (again) δεύτερον (a second time), “Σίμων (Simon) Ἰωάννου (son of John), ἀγαπᾷς (love you) με (Me)?” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord); σὺ (You) οἶδας (know) ὅτι (that) φιλῶ (I dearly love) σε (You).” Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ποίμαινε (Shepherd) τὰ (the) πρόβατά (sheep) μου (of Me).” ¹⁷ Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him) τὸ (the) τρίτον (third time), “Σίμων (Simon) Ἰωάννου (son of John), φιλεῖς (do you dearly love) με (Me)?” Ἐλυπήθη (Was grieved) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) ὅτι (because) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him) τὸ (the) τρίτον (third time), “Φιλεῖς (Do you dearly love) με (Me)?” Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), πάντα (all things) σὺ (You) οἶδας (know); σὺ (You) γινώσκεις (know) ὅτι (that) φιλῶ (I dearly love) σε (You).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Βόσκε (Feed) τὰ (the) πρόβατά (sheep) μου (of Me).

²² Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) οὐ (not) φιλεῖ (loves) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), ἤτω (let him be) ἀνάθεμα (accursed). Μαράνα* (Marana) θά* (tha)! ²³ Ἡ (The) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) μεθ’ (be with) ὑμῶν (you).

⁸ Οὐ (Not) κατ’ (as) ἐπιταγὴν (a command) λέγω (do I speak), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἑτέρων (of others) σπουδῆς (earnestness), καὶ (also) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) ὑμετέρας (of your) ἀγάπης (love) γνήσιον (genuineness) δοκιμάζων (proving).

¹² εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) προθυμία (readiness) πρόκειται (is present), καθὸ (as) ἐὰν (if) ἔχῃ (he might have) εὐπρόσδεκτος (acceptable), οὐ (not) καθὸ (as) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (he does have).
