⁴⁶ ἐγὼ (I) φῶς (a light) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἐλήλυθα (have come), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (should abide).

¹⁶ ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) ὁ (-) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐν (in) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), φῶς (a light) εἶδεν (have seen) μέγα (great), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to those) καθημένοις (sitting) ἐν (in the) χώρᾳ (land) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (shadow) θανάτου (of death), φῶς (a light) ἀνέτειλεν (has dawned) αὐτοῖς (on them).”

⁷⁶ Καὶ (And) σὺ (you) δέ (now), παιδίον (child), προφήτης (prophet) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) κληθήσῃ (will be called); προπορεύσῃ (you will go) γὰρ (for) ἐνώπιον (before) Κυρίου (the Lord), ἑτοιμάσαι (to prepare) ὁδοὺς (ways) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ⁷⁷ τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) γνῶσιν (knowledge) σωτηρίας (of salvation) τῷ (to) λαῷ (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of the sins) αὐτῶν (of them), ⁷⁸ διὰ (through) σπλάγχνα (the affections) ἐλέους (of compassion) Θεοῦ (of God) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) ἐπισκέψεται (will visit) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀνατολὴ (the Sunrise) ἐξ (from) ὕψους (on high), ⁷⁹ ἐπιφᾶναι (to shine upon) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (in the shadow) θανάτου (of death) καθημένοις (sitting); τοῦ (-) κατευθῦναι (to direct) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (into) ὁδὸν (the way) εἰρήνης (of peace).”

³² φῶς (a light) εἰς (for) ἀποκάλυψιν (revelation) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory) λαοῦ (of the people) σου (of You), Ἰσραήλ (Israel).”

⁴ ἐν (In) αὐτῷ (Him) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men). ⁵ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) φαίνει (shines), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) αὐτὸ (it) οὐ (not) κατέλαβεν (overcame).

⁹ Ἦν (Was) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true), ὃ (who) φωτίζει (enlightens) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐρχόμενον (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

¹⁹ Αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κρίσις (judgement), ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐλήλυθεν (has come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), καὶ (and) ἠγάπησαν (loved) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) ἢ (than) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light); ἦν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) πονηρὰ (evil) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds).

¹² Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world); ὁ (the one) ἀκολουθῶν (following) ἐμοὶ* (Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) περιπατήσῃ (shall walk) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἕξει (will have) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).”

⁵ ὅταν (While) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὦ (I shall be), φῶς (the light) εἰμι (I am) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).”

³⁹ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰς (For) κρίμα (judgment) ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) τοῦτον (this) ἦλθον (came), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέπωσιν (may see); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) βλέποντες (seeing), τυφλοὶ (blind) γένωνται (may become).”

³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going). ³⁶ ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).” Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).

¹⁸ ἀνοῖξαι (to open) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦ (that) ἐπιστρέψαι (they may turn) ἀπὸ (from) σκότους (darkness) εἰς (to) φῶς (light), καὶ (and) τῆς (from the) ἐξουσίας (power) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), τοῦ (that) λαβεῖν (may receive) αὐτοὺς (they) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) καὶ (and) κλῆρον (an inheritance) ἐν (among) τοῖς (those) ἡγιασμένοις (having been sanctified) πίστει (by faith) τῇ (that is) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me).’

¹⁴ διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ἔγειρε (Awake you), ὁ (the one) καθεύδων (sleeping), καὶ (and) ἀνάστα (rise up) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) ἐπιφαύσει (will shine upon) σοι (you) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ).”

¹ Ὃ (That which) ἦν (was) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), ὃ (that which) ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard), ὃ (that which) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes) ἡμῶν (of us), ὃ (that which) ἐθεασάμεθα (we have gazed upon) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) χεῖρες (hands) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐψηλάφησαν (have handled), περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Λόγου (Word) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) — ² καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐφανερώθη (was made manifest), καὶ (and) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) καὶ (and) μαρτυροῦμεν (bear witness), καὶ (and) ἀπαγγέλλομεν (we proclaim) ὑμῖν (to you) τὴν (the) ζωὴν (life) τὴν (-) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἥτις (which) ἦν (was) πρὸς (with) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ἡμῖν (to us) — ³ ὃ (that which) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) καὶ (and) ἀκηκόαμεν (have heard), ἀπαγγέλλομεν (we proclaim) καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) ἔχητε (may have) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us). καὶ (Indeed) ἡ (the) κοινωνία (fellowship) δὲ (now) ἡ (-) ἡμετέρα (of us) μετὰ (is with) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father), καὶ (and) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁸ πάλιν (Again), ἐντολὴν (a commandment) καινὴν (new) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθὲς (true) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true) ἤδη (already) φαίνει (shines). ⁹ Ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) εἶναι (to be) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῶν (hating), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is) ἕως (even until) ἄρτι (now).
