⁶ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men),’ ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἅπας (all) καταλιθάσει (will stone) ἡμᾶς (us); πεπεισμένος (having been persuaded) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (they are), Ἰωάννην (John) προφήτην (a prophet) εἶναι (to be).”

⁹ ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (did you go out), προφήτην (a prophet) ἰδεῖν (to see)? ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and one) περισσότερον (more excellent) προφήτου (than a prophet).

⁵ καὶ (Although) θέλων (wishing) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), ἐφοβήθη (he feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude), ὅτι (because) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (him) εἶχον (they were holding).

²⁶ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men),’ φοβούμεθα (we fear) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) ἔχουσιν (hold) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John).”

⁴⁶ καὶ (And) ζητοῦντες (seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of), ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐπεὶ (because) εἰς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (Him) εἶχον (they were holding).

⁵ ἔλεγον (They were saying) δέ (however), “Μὴ (Not) ἐν (during) τῇ (the) ἑορτῇ (feast), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) θόρυβος (a riot) γένηται (there be) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people).”

¹² Καὶ (And) ἐζήτουν (they were seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of), καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd); ἔγνωσαν (they knew) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) πρὸς (against) αὐτοὺς (them) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) εἶπεν (He had spoken). καὶ (And) ἀφέντες (having left) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπῆλθον (they went away).

⁷⁶ Καὶ (And) σὺ (you) δέ (now), παιδίον (child), προφήτης (prophet) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) κληθήσῃ (will be called); προπορεύσῃ (you will go) γὰρ (for) ἐνώπιον (before) Κυρίου (the Lord), ἑτοιμάσαι (to prepare) ὁδοὺς (ways) αὐτοῦ (of Him);

²⁶ Ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (have you gone out) ἰδεῖν (to see)? προφήτην (A prophet)? ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and one) περισσότερον (more excellent) προφήτου (than a prophet). ²⁷ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is he) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) γέγραπται (it has been written): ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀποστέλλω (I send) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (messenger) μου (of Me) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (the face) σου (of you), Ὃς (who) κατασκευάσει (will prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way) σου (of You) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You).’ ²⁸ Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), μείζων (a greater) ἐν (among) γεννητοῖς (those born) γυναικῶν (of women) Ἰωάννου (than John) οὐδείς (no one) ἐστιν (is); ὁ (-) δὲ (yet) μικρότερος (the least) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God), μείζων (greater) αὐτοῦ (than he) ἐστιν (is).” ²⁹ Καὶ (And) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἀκούσας (having heard), καὶ (even) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors), ἐδικαίωσαν (declared as righteous) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), βαπτισθέντες (having been baptized with) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John);

⁴¹ καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἦλθον (came) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἰωάννης (John) μὲν (indeed) σημεῖον (sign) ἐποίησεν (did) οὐδέν (no); πάντα (everything) δὲ (however) ὅσα (that) εἶπεν (said) Ἰωάννης (John) περὶ (about) τούτου (this man), ἀληθῆ (true) ἦν (was).”

²⁶ Τότε (Then) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ὁ (the) στρατηγὸς (captain) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) ὑπηρέταις (officers) ἦγεν (was bringing) αὐτούς (them), οὐ (not) μετὰ (with) βίας (force); ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid of) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) λαόν (people) μὴ (lest) λιθασθῶσιν (they might be stoned).
