⁷ Ἐκεῖνοι (Those) δὲ (however) οἱ (-) γεωργοὶ (farmers) πρὸς (to) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) εἶπαν (said) ὅτι (-), ‘Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) κληρονόμος (heir); δεῦτε (come), ἀποκτείνωμεν (let us kill) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) ἡμῶν (ours) ἔσται (will be) ἡ (the) κληρονομία (inheritance).’

³ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) βασιλεὺς (King) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἐταράχθη (he was troubled), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him). ⁴ καὶ (And) συναγαγὼν (having gathered together) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), ἐπυνθάνετο (he was inquiring) παρ’ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ποῦ (where) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) γεννᾶται (was to be born). ⁵ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐν (In) Βηθλέεμ (Bethlehem) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) γέγραπται (has it been written) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet): ⁶ ‘Καὶ (And) σύ (you), Βηθλέεμ (Bethlehem), γῆ (land) Ἰούδα (of Judah), οὐδαμῶς (by no means) ἐλαχίστη (least) εἶ (are) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἡγεμόσιν (rulers) Ἰούδα (of Judah), ἐκ (out) σοῦ (of you) γὰρ (for) ἐξελεύσεται (will go forth) ἡγούμενος (One leading), ὅστις (who) ποιμανεῖ (will shepherd) τὸν (the) λαόν (people) μου (of Me) τὸν (-) Ἰσραήλ (Israel).’” ⁷ Τότε (Then) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), λάθρᾳ (secretly) καλέσας (having called) τοὺς (the) μάγους (Magi), ἠκρίβωσεν (inquired exactly) παρ’ (of) αὐτῶν (them) τὸν (the) χρόνον (time) τοῦ (of the) φαινομένου (appearing) ἀστέρος (star). ⁸ καὶ (And) πέμψας (having sent) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (to) Βηθλέεμ (Bethlehem), εἶπεν (he said), “Πορευθέντες (Having gone), ἐξετάσατε (search) ἀκριβῶς (carefully) περὶ (for) τοῦ (the) παιδίου (Child); ἐπὰν (when) δὲ (then) εὕρητε (You shall have found Him), ἀπαγγείλατέ (bring word back) μοι (to me), ὅπως (so that) κἀγὼ (I also) ἐλθὼν (having come), προσκυνήσω (may worship) αὐτῷ (Him).” ⁹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τοῦ (the) βασιλέως (king), ἐπορεύθησαν (they went away); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ὁ (the) ἀστὴρ (star) ὃν (which) εἶδον (they saw) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀνατολῇ (east) προῆγεν (went before) αὐτούς (them) ἕως (until) ἐλθὼν (having arrived), ἐστάθη (it stood) ἐπάνω (over) οὗ (where) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) παιδίον (Child). ¹⁰ ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) τὸν (the) ἀστέρα (star), ἐχάρησαν (they rejoiced with) χαρὰν (joy) μεγάλην (great) σφόδρα (exceedingly). ¹¹ καὶ (And) ἐλθόντες (having come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house), εἶδον (they found) τὸ (the) παιδίον (Child) μετὰ (with) Μαρίας (Mary) τῆς (the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) πεσόντες (having fallen down), προσεκύνησαν (they worshiped) αὐτῷ (Him); καὶ (and) ἀνοίξαντες (having opened) τοὺς (the) θησαυροὺς (treasures) αὐτῶν (of them), προσήνεγκαν (they offered) αὐτῷ (to Him) δῶρα (gifts), χρυσὸν (gold) καὶ (and) λίβανον (frankincense) καὶ (and) σμύρναν (myrrh). ¹² Καὶ (And) χρηματισθέντες (having been divinely warned) κατ’ (in) ὄναρ (a dream) μὴ (not) ἀνακάμψαι (to return) πρὸς (to) Ἡρῴδην (Herod), δι’ (by) ἄλλης (another) ὁδοῦ (route) ἀνεχώρησαν (they withdrew) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χώραν (country) αὐτῶν (of them). ¹³ Ἀναχωρησάντων (Having withdrawn) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (of them), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἄγγελος (an angel) κυρίου (of the Lord) φαίνεται (appears) κατ’ (in) ὄναρ (a dream) τῷ (-) Ἰωσὴφ (to Joseph), λέγων (saying), “Ἐγερθεὶς (Having arisen), παράλαβε (take) τὸ (the) παιδίον (Child) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) φεῦγε (flee) εἰς (into) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt), καὶ (and) ἴσθι (remain) ἐκεῖ (there) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) εἴπω (I should tell) σοι (you); μέλλει (is about) γὰρ (for) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ζητεῖν (to seek) τὸ (the) παιδίον (Child), τοῦ (-) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy) αὐτό (Him).”

¹⁶ Τότε (Then) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἰδὼν (having seen) ὅτι (that) ἐνεπαίχθη (he had been outwitted) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) μάγων (Magi), ἐθυμώθη (was enraged) λίαν (intensely), καὶ (and) ἀποστείλας (having sent forth), ἀνεῖλεν (he put to death) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (boys) τοὺς (that were) ἐν (in) Βηθλέεμ (Bethlehem) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πᾶσι (all) τοῖς (the) ὁρίοις (vicinity) αὐτῆς (of it), ἀπὸ (from) διετοῦς (two years old) καὶ (and) κατωτέρω (under), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) χρόνον (time) ὃν (which) ἠκρίβωσεν (he had ascertained) παρὰ (from) τῶν (the) μάγων (Magi).

¹² Καὶ (And) ἐζήτουν (they were seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of), καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd); ἔγνωσαν (they knew) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) πρὸς (against) αὐτοὺς (them) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) εἶπεν (He had spoken). καὶ (And) ἀφέντες (having left) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπῆλθον (they went away).

⁴⁷ Συνήγαγον (Gathered) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) συνέδριον (a council), καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying), “Τί (What) ποιοῦμεν (are we to do)? ὅτι (For) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖ (does) σημεῖα (signs). ⁴⁸ ἐὰν (If) ἀφῶμεν (we shall let him alone) αὐτὸν (Him) οὕτως (like this), πάντες (all) πιστεύσουσιν (will believe) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) ἐλεύσονται (will come) οἱ (the) Ῥωμαῖοι (Romans) καὶ (and) ἀροῦσιν (will take away) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation).” ⁴⁹ Εἷς (One) δέ (however) τις (certain) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), Καϊάφας (Caiaphas), ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ὢν (being) τοῦ (the) ἐνιαυτοῦ (year) ἐκείνου (same), εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know) οὐδέν (nothing), ⁵⁰ οὐδὲ (nor) λογίζεσθε (consider you) ὅτι (that) συμφέρει (it is profitable) ὑμῖν (for you) ἵνα (that) εἷς (one) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἀποθάνῃ (should die) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἀπόληται (should perish).”

²³ τοῦτον (Him) τῇ (by the) ὡρισμένῃ (determinate) βουλῇ (plan) καὶ (and) προγνώσει (foreknowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἔκδοτον (delivered up) διὰ (by) χειρὸς (hands) ἀνόμων (lawless), προσπήξαντες (having crucified), ἀνείλατε (You put to death),

²⁸ λέγων (saying), “[Οὐ] (Not) Παραγγελίᾳ (by a charge) παρηγγείλαμεν (we commanded) ὑμῖν (you) μὴ (not) διδάσκειν (to teach) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this)? καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), πεπληρώκατε (you have filled) τὴν (-) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) τῆς (with the) διδαχῆς (teaching) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) βούλεσθε (you intend) ἐπαγαγεῖν (to bring) ἐφ’ (upon) ἡμᾶς (us) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τούτου (this).”

⁵² τίνα (Which) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) οὐκ (not) ἐδίωξαν (did persecute) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you)? καὶ (And) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed) τοὺς (those) προκαταγγείλαντας (having foretold) περὶ (about) τῆς (the) ἐλεύσεως (coming) τοῦ (of the) Δικαίου (Righteous One), οὗ (of whom) νῦν (now) ὑμεῖς (you) προδόται (betrayers) καὶ (and) φονεῖς (murderers) ἐγένεσθε (have become),

²⁷ οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) κατοικοῦντες (dwelling) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦτον (Him) ἀγνοήσαντες (not having known), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) φωνὰς (voices) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) τὰς (that) κατὰ (on) πᾶν (every) σάββατον (Sabbath) ἀναγινωσκομένας (are being read), κρίναντες (having condemned Him) ἐπλήρωσαν (they fulfilled them). ²⁸ καὶ (And) μηδεμίαν (no) αἰτίαν (cause) θανάτου (of death) εὑρόντες (having found), ᾐτήσαντο (they begged) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) ἀναιρεθῆναι (to put to death) αὐτόν (him).
