¹ Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (early) πρωῒ (in the morning), συμβούλιον (a counsel) ποιήσαντες* (having formed) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), καὶ (and) γραμματέων (scribes), καὶ (and) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) συνέδριον (Council), δήσαντες (having bound) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἀπήνεγκαν (they led Him away) καὶ (and) παρέδωκαν (delivered Him) Πιλάτῳ (to Pilate). ² Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησεν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτῷ (to him), λέγει (He says), “Σὺ (You) λέγεις (have said).” ³ Καὶ (And) κατηγόρουν (were accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) πολλά (of many things). ⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) πάλιν (again) ἐπηρώτα (began to question) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγων (saying), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer You) οὐδέν (nothing)? ἴδε (See) πόσα (how many things) σου (You) κατηγοροῦσιν (they testify against)!” ⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκέτι (no longer) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίθη (answered), ὥστε (so as) θαυμάζειν (to amaze) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate). ⁶ Κατὰ (At) δὲ (then) ἑορτὴν (the feast), ἀπέλυεν (he used to release) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἕνα (one) δέσμιον (prisoner), ὃν (whom) παρῃτοῦντο (they requested). ⁷ ἦν (There was) δὲ (then) ὁ (the one) λεγόμενος (called) Βαραββᾶς (Barabbas), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) στασιαστῶν (rebels) δεδεμένος (having been bound), οἵτινες (who) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) στάσει (insurrection) φόνον (murder) πεποιήκεισαν (had committed). ⁸ καὶ (And) ἀναβὰς (having cried out), ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ἤρξατο (began) αἰτεῖσθαι (to beg him to do) καθὼς (as usually) ἐποίει (he did) αὐτοῖς (for them). ⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἀπεκρίθη (answered) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Θέλετε (Wish you that) ἀπολύσω (I should release) ὑμῖν (to you) τὸν (the) Βασιλέα (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” ¹⁰ ἐγίνωσκεν (He was aware) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) διὰ (because of) φθόνον (envy) παραδεδώκεισαν (had delivered up) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests). ¹¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἀρχιερεῖς (the chief priests) ἀνέσεισαν (stirred up) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) ἵνα (so that) μᾶλλον (instead) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas) ἀπολύσῃ (he might release) αὐτοῖς (to them). ¹² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) πάλιν (again) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ἔλεγεν (was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (What) οὖν (then) ‹θέλετε› (do you wish that) ποιήσω (I should do) ὃν (to Him) λέγετε (you call) τὸν (the) Βασιλέα (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” ¹³ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) πάλιν (again) ἔκραξαν (they cried out), “Σταύρωσον (Crucify) αὐτόν (Him)!” ¹⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἔλεγεν (was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (What) γὰρ (indeed) ἐποίησεν (did He commit) κακόν (evil)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) περισσῶς (much more) ἔκραξαν (they shouted), “Σταύρωσον (Crucify) αὐτόν (Him)!” ¹⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), βουλόμενος (desiring) τῷ (to the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) τὸ (that which was) ἱκανὸν (satisfactory) ποιῆσαι (to do), ἀπέλυσεν (released) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas), καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), φραγελλώσας (having flogged him), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified). ¹⁶ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) στρατιῶται (the soldiers) ἀπήγαγον (led away) αὐτὸν (him) ἔσω (into) τῆς (the) αὐλῆς (palace), ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is) Πραιτώριον (the Praetorium), καὶ (and) συνκαλοῦσιν (they call together) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) σπεῖραν (cohort). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἐνδιδύσκουσιν (they put on) αὐτὸν (Him) πορφύραν (purple), καὶ (and) περιτιθέασιν (placed on) αὐτῷ (Him), πλέξαντες (having twisted together) ἀκάνθινον (of thorns) στέφανον (a crown), ¹⁸ καὶ (and) ἤρξαντο (they began) ἀσπάζεσθαι (to salute) αὐτόν (Him), “Χαῖρε (Hail), Βασιλεῦ (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)!” ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ἔτυπτον (they kept striking) αὐτοῦ (His) τὴν (-) κεφαλὴν (head) καλάμῳ (with a reed), καὶ (and) ἐνέπτυον (spitting on) αὐτῷ (Him); καὶ (and), τιθέντες (bending) τὰ (the) γόνατα (knees), προσεκύνουν (they were kneeling down) αὐτῷ (to Him). ²⁰ καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐνέπαιξαν (they had mocked) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐξέδυσαν (they took off) αὐτὸν (him) τὴν (the) πορφύραν (purple) καὶ (and) ἐνέδυσαν (put on) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (His) ‹ἴδια› (own). Καὶ (And) ἐξάγουσιν (they are leading out) αὐτὸν (him), ἵνα (that) σταυρώσωσιν (they might crucify) αὐτόν (Him). ²¹ Καὶ (And) ἀγγαρεύουσιν (they compel), παράγοντά (passing by) τινα (one), Σίμωνα (Simon) Κυρηναῖον (of Cyrene), ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἀπ’ (from) ἀγροῦ (the country), τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) Ἀλεξάνδρου (of Alexander) καὶ (and) Ῥούφου (Rufus), ἵνα (that) ἄρῃ (he might carry) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ²² Καὶ (And) φέρουσιν (they bring) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Γολγοθᾶν (Golgotha), τόπον (a place) ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) μεθερμηνευόμενον* (translated), Κρανίου (of a Skull) τόπος (Place). ²³ καὶ (And) ἐδίδουν (they were offering) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐσμυρνισμένον (having been mixed with myrrh), οἶνον (wine); ὃς (He) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) ἔλαβεν (did take it). ²⁴ Καὶ (And) σταυροῦσιν (having crucified) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (also) διαμερίζονται (they divided) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), βάλλοντες (casting) κλῆρον (lots) ἐπ’ (for) αὐτὰ (them), τίς (who) τί (what) ἄρῃ (should take). ²⁵ Ἦν (It was) δὲ (then) ὥρα (the hour) τρίτη (third), καὶ (and) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified) αὐτόν (Him). ²⁶ καὶ (And) ἦν (there was) ἡ (the) ἐπιγραφὴ (inscription) τῆς (of the) αἰτίας (accusation) αὐτοῦ (against Him) ἐπιγεγραμμένη (having been written): Ο* (The) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews). ²⁷ Καὶ (And) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) σταυροῦσιν (they crucify) δύο (two) λῃστάς (robbers), ἕνα (one) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand), καὶ (and) ἕνα (one) ἐξ (at the) εὐωνύμων (left) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ^{28 29} Καὶ (And) οἱ (those) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) ἐβλασφήμουν (were railing at) αὐτὸν (Him), κινοῦντες (shaking) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Οὐὰ (Aha)! ὁ (The One) καταλύων (destroying) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) καὶ (and) οἰκοδομῶν (building it) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days), ³⁰ σῶσον (save) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καταβὰς (having descended) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross)!” ³¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), ἐμπαίζοντες (mocking) πρὸς (among) ἀλλήλους (one another), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved); ἑαυτὸν (Himself) οὐ (not) δύναται (He is able) σῶσαι (to save). ³² ὁ (The) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), καταβάτω (let Him descend) νῦν (now) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross), ἵνα (that) ἴδωμεν (we might see) καὶ (and) πιστεύσωμεν (believe)!” καὶ (And) οἱ (those) συνεσταυρωμένοι (being crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ὠνείδιζον (were upbraiding) αὐτόν (Him). ³³ Καὶ (And) γενομένης (having arrived) ὥρας (the hour) ἕκτης (sixth), σκότος (darkness) ἐγένετο (came) ἐφ’ (over) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (land), ἕως (until) ὥρας (the hour) ἐνάτης (ninth). ³⁴ καὶ (And) τῇ (at the) ἐνάτῃ (ninth) ὥρᾳ (hour), ἐβόησεν (cried out) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), “Ἐλωῒ (Eloi), Ἐλωῒ (Eloi), λεμὰ* (lema) σαβαχθάνι* (sabachthani)?” ὅ (Which) ἐστιν (is) μεθερμηνευόμενον (translated), “Ὁ (-) Θεός (God) μου (of Me), ὁ (-) Θεός (God) μου (of Me), εἰς (to) τί (why) ἐγκατέλιπές (have You forsaken) με (Me)?” ³⁵ Καί (And) τινες (some) τῶν (of those) παρεστηκότων (standing by), ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ἴδε (Behold), Ἠλίαν (Elijah) φωνεῖ (He calls).” ³⁶ Δραμὼν (Having run) δέ (then) τις (one) καὶ (and) γεμίσας (having filled) σπόγγον (a sponge) ὄξους (with vinegar), περιθεὶς (having put it on) καλάμῳ (a reed), ἐπότιζεν (gave to drink) αὐτόν (him), λέγων (saying), “Ἄφετε (Let be); ἴδωμεν (let us see) εἰ (if) ἔρχεται (comes) Ἠλίας (Elijah) καθελεῖν (to take down) αὐτόν (him).” ³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἀφεὶς (having uttered) φωνὴν (a cry) μεγάλην (loud), ἐξέπνευσεν (breathed His last). ³⁸ Καὶ (And) τὸ (the) καταπέτασμα (veil) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) ἐσχίσθη (was torn) εἰς (into) δύο (two) ἀπ’ (from) ἄνωθεν (top) ἕως (to) κάτω (bottom). ³⁹ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) κεντυρίων (centurion) ὁ (-) παρεστηκὼς (standing) ἐξ (from) ἐναντίας (opposite of) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὅτι (that) οὕτως (thus) ἐξέπνευσεν (He breathed His last), εἶπεν (he said), “Ἀληθῶς (Truly) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) Υἱὸς (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἦν (was)!” ⁴⁰ Ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) γυναῖκες (women) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar off) θεωροῦσαι (looking on), ἐν (among) αἷς (whom) καὶ (also) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνὴ (Magdalene), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the) Ἰακώβου (of James) τοῦ (the) μικροῦ (least) καὶ (and) Ἰωσῆτος (of Joseph) μήτηρ (mother), καὶ (and) Σαλώμη (Salome), ⁴¹ αἳ (who), ὅτε (when) ἦν (He was) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Γαλιλαίᾳ (Galilee), ἠκολούθουν (had been following) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (and) διηκόνουν (had been ministering) αὐτῷ (to Him), καὶ (and) ἄλλαι (other) πολλαὶ (many), αἱ (those) συναναβᾶσαι (having come up with) αὐτῷ (Him) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem). ⁴² Καὶ (And) ἤδη (already) ὀψίας (evening) γενομένης (having arrived), ἐπεὶ (since) ἦν (it was the) Παρασκευή (Preparation), ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is), προσάββατον (the day before Sabbath), ⁴³ ἐλθὼν (having come), Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) ὁ (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ἁριμαθαίας (Arimathea), εὐσχήμων (a prominent) βουλευτής (Council member), ὃς (who) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (himself) ἦν (was) προσδεχόμενος (waiting for) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τολμήσας (having boldness), εἰσῆλθεν (went in) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) καὶ (and) ᾐτήσατο (asked for) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). ⁴⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐθαύμασεν (wondered) εἰ (if) ἤδη (already) τέθνηκεν (He were dead). καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) τὸν (the) κεντυρίωνα (centurion), ἐπηρώτησεν (he questioned) αὐτὸν (him) εἰ (whether) πάλαι (already) ἀπέθανεν (He had died). ⁴⁵ καὶ (And) γνοὺς (having known it) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) κεντυρίωνος (centurion), ἐδωρήσατο (He granted) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) τῷ (-) Ἰωσήφ (to Joseph). ⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) ἀγοράσας (having bought) σινδόνα (a linen cloth), καθελὼν (having taken down) αὐτὸν (him), ἐνείλησεν (he wrapped Him in) τῇ (the) σινδόνι (linen cloth) καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν* (laid) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) μνημείῳ* (a tomb) ὃ (which) ἦν (was) λελατομημένον (cut) ἐκ (out of) πέτρας (a rock). καὶ (And) προσεκύλισεν (he rolled) λίθον (a stone) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) θύραν (door) τοῦ (of the) μνημείου (tomb). ⁴⁷ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνὴ (Magdalene) καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the mother) Ἰωσῆτος (of Joseph) ἐθεώρουν (were watching) ποῦ (where) τέθειται (He was laid).

²² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀργιζόμενος (being angry with) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῇ (to the) κρίσει (judgment); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Ῥακά (Raca),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῷ (to the) συνεδρίῳ (Sanhedrin); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say), ‘Μωρέ (Fool),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire).

¹⁸ “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀναβαίνομεν (we go up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδοθήσεται (will be betrayed) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχιερεῦσιν (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματεῦσιν (scribes), καὶ (and) κατακρινοῦσιν (they will condemn) αὐτὸν (Him) 〈εἰς〉 (to) θανάτῳ* (death), ¹⁹ καὶ (and) παραδώσουσιν (they will betray) αὐτὸν (Him) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εἰς (unto), τὸ (-) ἐμπαῖξαι (to mock) καὶ (and) μαστιγῶσαι (to flog) καὶ (and) σταυρῶσαι (to crucify); καὶ (and) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐγερθήσεται (He will rise again).”

¹ Πρωΐας (Morning) δὲ (then) γενομένης (having arrived), συμβούλιον (counsel) ἔλαβον (took) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ὥστε (so that) θανατῶσαι (they might put to death) αὐτόν (him). ² καὶ (And) δήσαντες (having bound) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπήγαγον (they led away Him) καὶ (and) παρέδωκαν (delivered Him to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate), τῷ (the) ἡγεμόνι (governor).

³² παραδοθήσεται (He will be betrayed) γὰρ (for) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), καὶ (and) ἐμπαιχθήσεται (will be mocked), καὶ (and) ὑβρισθήσεται (will be insulted), καὶ (and) ἐμπτυσθήσεται (will be spit upon). ³³ καὶ (And) μαστιγώσαντες (having flogged Him), ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) αὐτόν (Him); καὶ (and) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) τρίτῃ (third) ἀναστήσεται (He will rise again).”

¹ Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰν (having risen up), ἅπαν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) αὐτῶν (of them) ἤγαγον (led) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate). ² ἤρξαντο (They began) δὲ (then) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Τοῦτον (This man) εὕραμεν (we found) διαστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) κωλύοντα (forbidding) φόρους (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) διδόναι (to be given), καὶ (and) λέγοντα (declaring) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) Χριστὸν (Christ), βασιλέα (a king), εἶναι (to be).” ³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἠρώτησεν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγων (saying), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτῷ (him), ἔφη (He was saying), “Σὺ (You) λέγεις (say).” ⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), “Οὐδὲν (Not) εὑρίσκω (find I) αἴτιον (guilt) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this).” ⁵ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπίσχυον (they kept insisting), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἀνασείει (He stirs up) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people), διδάσκων (teaching) καθ’ (throughout) ὅλης (all) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), καὶ (and) ἀρξάμενος (He has begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) ἕως (even to) ὧδε (here).”

²⁸ Ἄγουσιν (They are leading) οὖν (then) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) πρωΐ (early), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐκ (not) εἰσῆλθον (entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) μιανθῶσιν (they should be defiled), ἀλλὰ (but) φάγωσιν (might eat) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover). ²⁹ Ἐξῆλθεν (Went) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἔξω (out) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) φησίν (said), “Τίνα (What) κατηγορίαν (accusation) φέρετε (bring you) ‹κατὰ› (against) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τούτου (this)?” ³⁰ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦν (were) οὗτος (He) κακὸν (evil) ποιῶν (doing), οὐκ (not) ἄν (-) σοι (to you) παρεδώκαμεν (we would have delivered) αὐτόν (Him).” ³¹ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Λάβετε (Take) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑμεῖς (yourselves) καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) ὑμῶν (of you) κρίνατε (judge) αὐτόν (Him).” Εἶπον (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Ἡμῖν (To us) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (it is permitted) ἀποκτεῖναι (to put to death) οὐδένα (no one)” — ³² ἵνα (that) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled), ὃν (which) εἶπεν (He had spoken), σημαίνων (signifying) ποίῳ (what) θανάτῳ (death) ἤμελλεν (He was about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die). ³³ Εἰσῆλθεν (Entered) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), καὶ (and) ἐφώνησεν (he called) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” ³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀπὸ* (Of) σεαυτοῦ* (yourself) σὺ (you) τοῦτο (this) λέγεις (say), ἢ (or) ἄλλοι (others) εἶπόν (did say it) σοι (to you) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me)?” ³⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Μήτι (Not) ἐγὼ (I) Ἰουδαῖός (a Jew) εἰμι (am)? τὸ (The) ἔθνος (nation) τὸ (-) σὸν (of You) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) παρέδωκάν (delivered) σε (You) ἐμοί (to me). τί (What) ἐποίησας (have You done)?” ³⁶ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἡ (The) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this); εἰ (if) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) ἦν (were) ἡ (-) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἡ (-) ἐμή (My), οἱ (-) ὑπηρέται (attendants) ἄν (-) «οἱ (-) ἐμοὶ (My) ἠγωνίζοντο» (would fight) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) παραδοθῶ (I might be betrayed) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews). νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ἡ (-) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐντεῦθεν (from here).” ³⁷ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Οὐκοῦν (Then) βασιλεὺς (a king) εἶ (are) σύ (You)?” Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Σὺ (You) λέγεις (say) ὅτι (that) βασιλεύς (a king) εἰμι (I am). ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) γεγέννημαι (have been born), καὶ (and) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) ἐλήλυθα (I have come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσω (I may bear witness) τῇ (to the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) ὢν (being) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἀκούει (hears) μου (of Me) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice).” ³⁸ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τί (What) ἐστιν (is) ἀλήθεια (truth)?” Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) εἰπὼν (having said), πάλιν (again) ἐξῆλθεν (he went out) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) οὐδεμίαν (no) εὑρίσκω (find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) αἰτίαν (guilt).

¹³ Ὁ (The) Θεὸς (God) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham), καὶ (and) [ὁ (the) θεὸς] (God) Ἰσαὰκ (of Isaac), καὶ (and) [ὁ (the) θεὸς] (God) Ἰακώβ (Jacob), ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐδόξασεν (has glorified) τὸν (the) Παῖδα (servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you) μὲν (indeed) παρεδώκατε (betrayed) καὶ (and) ἠρνήσασθε (disowned) κατὰ (in) πρόσωπον (the presence) Πιλάτου (of Pilate), κρίναντος (having adjudged) ἐκείνου (that one) ἀπολύειν (to release Him).

⁵ Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) αὔριον (next day) συναχθῆναι (were gathered together) αὐτῶν (their) τοὺς (-) ἄρχοντας (rulers) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) πρεσβυτέρους (elders) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) γραμματεῖς (scribes) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ⁶ καὶ (and) Ἅννας (Annas) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest), καὶ (and) Καϊάφας (Caiaphas), καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John), καὶ (and) Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexander), καὶ (and) ὅσοι (as many as) ἦσαν (were) ἐκ (of) γένους (descent) ἀρχιερατικοῦ (high-priestly).

²⁵ ὁ (-) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) ἡμῶν (of us) διὰ (by) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy) στόματος (through the mouth) Δαυὶδ (David) παιδός (servant) σου (of You) εἰπών (having spoken) Ἵνα‿ (-): ‘Τί (Why) ἐφρύαξαν (did rage) ἔθνη (the Gentiles), καὶ (and) λαοὶ (peoples) ἐμελέτησαν (did devise) κενά (vain things)? ²⁶ παρέστησαν (Took their stand) οἱ (the) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) συνήχθησαν (were gathered) ἐπὶ (together) τὸ (-) αὐτὸ (themselves) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) Χριστοῦ (Christ) αὐτοῦ (of Him).’ ²⁷ Συνήχθησαν (Were gathered together) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (in) ἀληθείας (truth), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (this), ἐπὶ (against) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) Παῖδά (servant) σου (of You) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ὃν (whom) ἔχρισας (You anointed), Ἡρῴδης (Herod) τε (both) καὶ (and) Πόντιος (Pontius) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), σὺν (with) ἔθνεσιν (the Gentiles) καὶ (and) λαοῖς (peoples) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), ²⁸ ποιῆσαι (to do) ὅσα (whatever) ἡ (the) χείρ (hand) σου (of You) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) βουλὴ (purpose) [σου] (of You) προώρισεν (had determined beforehand) γενέσθαι (to happen).

¹¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστάθη (stood) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) ἡγεμόνος (governor); καὶ (and) ἐπηρώτησεν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (the) ἡγεμὼν (governor), λέγων (saying), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔφη (said), “Σὺ (You) λέγεις (say).” ¹² Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κατηγορεῖσθαι (being accused) αὐτὸν (His) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίνατο (He answered). ¹³ Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀκούεις (do you hear) πόσα (how many things) σου (You) καταμαρτυροῦσιν (they witness against)?” ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίθη (He did answer) αὐτῷ (him), πρὸς (to) οὐδὲ (not even) ἓν (one) ῥῆμα (word), ὥστε (so as) θαυμάζειν (to amaze) τὸν (the) ἡγεμόνα (governor) λίαν (exceedingly).

⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἀπεκρίθη (answered) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Θέλετε (Wish you that) ἀπολύσω (I should release) ὑμῖν (to you) τὸν (the) Βασιλέα (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?”

¹² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) πάλιν (again) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ἔλεγεν (was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (What) οὖν (then) ‹θέλετε› (do you wish that) ποιήσω (I should do) ὃν (to Him) λέγετε (you call) τὸν (the) Βασιλέα (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?”

¹⁸ καὶ (and) ἤρξαντο (they began) ἀσπάζεσθαι (to salute) αὐτόν (Him), “Χαῖρε (Hail), Βασιλεῦ (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)!”

²⁶ καὶ (And) ἦν (there was) ἡ (the) ἐπιγραφὴ (inscription) τῆς (of the) αἰτίας (accusation) αὐτοῦ (against Him) ἐπιγεγραμμένη (having been written): Ο* (The) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews).

¹⁹ Ἔγραψεν (Wrote) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τίτλον (a title) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (put it) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) γεγραμμένον (written): ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus) Ο* (of) ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΣ (Nazareth), Ο* (the) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews). ²⁰ Τοῦτον (This) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) τίτλον (title) πολλοὶ (many) ἀνέγνωσαν (read) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ὅτι (for) ἐγγὺς (near) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) τόπος (place), τῆς (the) πόλεως (city), ὅπου (where) ἐσταυρώθη (was crucified) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἦν (it was) γεγραμμένον (written) Ἑβραϊστί (in Hebrew), Ῥωμαϊστί (in Latin), Ἑλληνιστί (in Greek). ²¹ ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) τῷ (-) Πιλάτῳ (to Pilate) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), “Μὴ (Not) γράφε (write), ‘Ὁ (The) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews),’ ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖνος (He) εἶπεν (said), ‘Βασιλεύς (King) εἰμι (I am) «τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων» (Jews).’” ²² Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Ὃ (What) γέγραφα (I have written), γέγραφα (I have written).”

¹² Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κατηγορεῖσθαι (being accused) αὐτὸν (His) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίνατο (He answered).

⁶⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having stood up) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) εἰς (in) μέσον (the midst), ἐπηρώτησεν (he questioned) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer You) οὐδέν (nothing)? τί (What is it) οὗτοί (these) σου (You) καταμαρτυροῦσιν (testify against)?” ⁶¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἐσιώπα (He was silent), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίνατο (did He answer) οὐδέν (nothing). Πάλιν (Again) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ἐπηρώτα (was questioning) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) Εὐλογητοῦ (Blessed One)?”

⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκέτι (no longer) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίθη (answered), ὥστε (so as) θαυμάζειν (to amaze) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate).

⁶ Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) εἶδον (saw) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), ἐκραύγασαν (they cried out) λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρωσον (Crucify)! σταύρωσον (Crucify)!” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Λάβετε (Take) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑμεῖς (yourselves) καὶ (and) σταυρώσατε (crucify Him); ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) οὐχ (no) εὑρίσκω (find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) αἰτίαν (guilt).” ⁷ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) αὐτῷ (him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Ἡμεῖς (We) νόμον (a law) ἔχομεν (have), καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ὀφείλει (He ought) ἀποθανεῖν (to die), ὅτι (because) Υἱὸν (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἐποίησεν (He made).”

¹² Ἐκ (Out of) τούτου (this) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐζήτει (was seeking) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) αὐτόν (Him); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews) ἐκραύγασαν (cried out), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) τοῦτον (this man) ἀπολύσῃς (you release), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) φίλος (a friend) τοῦ (-) Καίσαρος (of Caesar). πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) βασιλέα (a king) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ποιῶν (making), ἀντιλέγει (speaks against) τῷ (-) Καίσαρι (Caesar).”

⁶² Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having stood up), ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οὐδὲν (Nothing) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer you)? τί (What) οὗτοί (these) σου (you) καταμαρτυροῦσιν (do witness against)?”

¹³ Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀκούεις (do you hear) πόσα (how many things) σου (You) καταμαρτυροῦσιν (they witness against)?”

¹⁰ Λέγει (Says) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Ἐμοὶ (To me) οὐ (not) λαλεῖς (speak You)? οὐκ (Not) οἶδας (know You) ὅτι (that) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) ἀπολῦσαί (to release) σε (You), καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) σταυρῶσαί (to crucify) σε (You)?”

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίθη (He did answer) αὐτῷ (him), πρὸς (to) οὐδὲ (not even) ἓν (one) ῥῆμα (word), ὥστε (so as) θαυμάζειν (to amaze) τὸν (the) ἡγεμόνα (governor) λίαν (exceedingly).

⁹ καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (he went) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) πάλιν (again), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Πόθεν (From where) εἶ (are) σύ (You)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπόκρισιν (an answer) οὐκ (not) ἔδωκεν (did give) αὐτῷ (him).

⁹ δοκῶ (I think) γάρ (for), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἡμᾶς (us) τοὺς (-) ἀποστόλους (apostles) ἐσχάτους (last) ἀπέδειξεν (has exhibited), ὡς (as) ἐπιθανατίους (appointed to death), ὅτι (because) θέατρον (a spectacle) ἐγενήθημεν (we have become) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world), καὶ (both) ἀγγέλοις (to angels) καὶ (and) ἀνθρώποις (to men).

² “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) μετὰ (after) δύο (two) ἡμέρας (days) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) γίνεται (takes place), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοται (is delivered) εἰς (over) τὸ (-) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified).”

⁵ ἔλεγον (They were saying) δέ (however), “Μὴ (Not) ἐν (during) τῇ (the) ἑορτῇ (feast), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) θόρυβος (a riot) γένηται (there be) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people).”

¹⁵ Κατὰ (At) δὲ (now) ἑορτὴν (the feast), εἰώθει (was accustomed) ὁ (the) ἡγεμὼν (governor) ἀπολύειν (to release) ἕνα (one) τῷ (to the) ὄχλῳ (multitude) δέσμιον (prisoner), ὃν (whom) ἤθελον (they were wishing). ¹⁶ εἶχον (They were holding) δὲ (now) τότε (at that time) δέσμιον (a prisoner) ἐπίσημον (notable), λεγόμενον (called) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas). ¹⁷ συνηγμένων (Being gathered together) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῶν (of them), εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τίνα (Whom) θέλετε (will you that) ἀπολύσω (I shall release) ὑμῖν (to you)? τὸν› (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas), ἢ (or) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), τὸν (who) λεγόμενον (is called) Χριστόν (Christ)?” ¹⁸ ᾔδει (He knew) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) διὰ (through) φθόνον (envy) παρέδωκαν (they delivered up) αὐτόν (him). ¹⁹ Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat), ἀπέστειλεν (sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), λέγουσα (saying), “Μηδὲν (Let there be nothing) σοὶ (between you) καὶ (and) τῷ (the) δικαίῳ (righteous man) ἐκείνῳ (that); πολλὰ (many things) γὰρ (for) ἔπαθον (I suffered) σήμερον (today) κατ’ (in) ὄναρ (a dream) δι’ (because of) αὐτόν (Him).” ²⁰ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀρχιερεῖς (the chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) ἔπεισαν (persuaded) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἵνα (that) αἰτήσωνται (they should ask for) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas), τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπολέσωσιν (should destroy). ²¹ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) ἡγεμὼν (governor) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τίνα (Which) θέλετε (do you desire) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) δύο (two), ἀπολύσω (I release) ὑμῖν (to you)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas).” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τί (What) οὖν (then) ποιήσω (should I do with) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), τὸν (who) λεγόμενον (is called) Χριστόν (Christ)?” Λέγουσιν (They say) πάντες (all), “Σταυρωθήτω (Let Him be crucified).” ²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he said), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did He commit)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) περισσῶς (all the more) ἔκραζον (they kept crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταυρωθήτω (Let Him be crucified).” ²⁴ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ὅτι (that) οὐδὲν (nothing) ὠφελεῖ (it availed), ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) θόρυβος (a riot) γίνεται (is arising), λαβὼν (having taken) ὕδωρ (water), ἀπενίψατο (he washed) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἀπέναντι* (before) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd), λέγων (saying), “Ἀθῷός (Guiltless) εἰμι (I am) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τούτου (of this). ὑμεῖς (For yourselves) ὄψεσθε (you will see).” ²⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) εἶπεν (said), “Τὸ (The) αἷμα (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐφ’ (be on) ἡμᾶς (us), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ἡμῶν (of us).” ²⁶ Τότε (Then) ἀπέλυσεν (he released) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas); τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) φραγελλώσας (having flogged), παρέδωκεν (He delivered up Him), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified).

¹⁶ παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).” ^{17 18} Ἀνέκραγον (They cried out) δὲ (however) παμπληθεὶ* (all together), λέγοντες (saying), “Αἶρε (Away with) τοῦτον (this man), ἀπόλυσον (release) δὲ (now) ἡμῖν (to us) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas),” ¹⁹ ὅστις (who) ἦν (was) διὰ (on account of) στάσιν (insurrection) τινὰ (a certain) γενομένην (having been made) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city), καὶ (and) φόνον (murder), βληθεὶς (having been cast) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison). ²⁰ Πάλιν (Again) δὲ (therefore) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) προσεφώνησεν (called) αὐτοῖς (to them), θέλων (wishing) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ²¹ οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπεφώνουν (they were crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρου (Crucify), σταύρου (crucify) αὐτόν (Him).” ²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) τρίτον (a third time) εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did commit) οὗτος (this man)? οὐδὲν (No) αἴτιον (cause) θανάτου (of death) εὗρον (found I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him). παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).” ²³ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπέκειντο (they were urgent), φωναῖς (with voices) μεγάλαις (loud), αἰτούμενοι (asking for) αὐτὸν (Him) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified). καὶ (And) κατίσχυον (were prevailing) αἱ (the) φωναὶ (voices) αὐτῶν (of them). ²⁴ καὶ (and) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐπέκρινεν (sentenced) γενέσθαι (to be done) τὸ (the) αἴτημα (demand) αὐτῶν (of them). ²⁵ ἀπέλυσεν (He released) δὲ (then) τὸν (the one) διὰ (on account of) στάσιν (insurrection) καὶ (and) φόνον (murder) βεβλημένον (having been cast) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ὃν (whom) ᾐτοῦντο (they had asked for); τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) τῷ (to the) θελήματι (will) αὐτῶν (of them).

³⁹ ἔστιν (It is) δὲ (however) συνήθεια (a custom) ὑμῖν (with you) ἵνα (that) ἕνα (one) ἀπολύσω (I should release) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) πάσχα (Passover); βούλεσθε (wish you) οὖν (therefore) ἀπολύσω (I should release) ὑμῖν (to you) τὸν (the) Βασιλέα (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” ⁴⁰ Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (then) πάλιν (again) λέγοντες (saying), “Μὴ (Not) τοῦτον (this one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas)!” ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Βαραββᾶς (Barabbas) λῃστής (an insurrectionist).

¹⁶ Τότε (Then) οὖν (therefore) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) αὐτὸν (Him) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified). Παρέλαβον (They took) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

²⁷ Διετίας (Two years) δὲ (however) πληρωθείσης (having been completed), ἔλαβεν (received as) διάδοχον (successor) ὁ (-) Φῆλιξ (Felix), Πόρκιον (Porcius) Φῆστον (Festus); θέλων (wishing) τε (then) χάριτα (favor) καταθέσθαι (to acquire for himself) τοῖς (with the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), ὁ (-) Φῆλιξ (Felix) κατέλιπε (left) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) δεδεμένον (imprisoned).

⁹ Ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus) δὲ (however), θέλων (wishing) τοῖς (on the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) χάριν (a favor) καταθέσθαι (to lay), ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul), εἶπεν (said), “Θέλεις (Are you willing) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἀναβὰς (having gone up), ἐκεῖ (there) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things) κριθῆναι (to be judged) ἐπ’ (before) ἐμοῦ (me)?”

¹⁶ εἶχον (They were holding) δὲ (now) τότε (at that time) δέσμιον (a prisoner) ἐπίσημον (notable), λεγόμενον (called) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas).

⁴ Καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθεν (went forth) πάλιν (again) ἔξω (outside) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἴδε (Behold), ἄγω (I bring) ὑμῖν (to you) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔξω (out), ἵνα (so that) γνῶτε (you may know) ὅτι (that) οὐδεμίαν (no) αἰτίαν (guilt) εὑρίσκω (I find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).” ⁵ ἐξῆλθεν (Went forth) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔξω (outside), φορῶν (wearing) τὸν (the) ἀκάνθινον (thorny) στέφανον (crown) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) πορφυροῦν (purple) ἱμάτιον (robe). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man)!”

¹⁴ ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) Παρασκευὴ (the Day of Preparation) τοῦ (of the) πάσχα (Passover); ὥρα (the hour) ἦν (was) ὡς (about) ἕκτη (the sixth). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (king) ὑμῶν (of you)!” ¹⁵ Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (therefore), “Ἐκεῖνοι (With Him) Ἆρον (away), ἆρον (away)! σταύρωσον (Crucify) αὐτόν (Him)!” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τὸν (The) Βασιλέα (King) ὑμῶν (of you) σταυρώσω (shall I crucify)?” Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχομεν (we have) βασιλέα (a king), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Καίσαρα (Caesar).” ¹⁶ Τότε (Then) οὖν (therefore) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) αὐτὸν (Him) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified). Παρέλαβον (They took) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

¹³ Ὁ (The) Θεὸς (God) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham), καὶ (and) [ὁ (the) θεὸς] (God) Ἰσαὰκ (of Isaac), καὶ (and) [ὁ (the) θεὸς] (God) Ἰακώβ (Jacob), ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐδόξασεν (has glorified) τὸν (the) Παῖδα (servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you) μὲν (indeed) παρεδώκατε (betrayed) καὶ (and) ἠρνήσασθε (disowned) κατὰ (in) πρόσωπον (the presence) Πιλάτου (of Pilate), κρίναντος (having adjudged) ἐκείνου (that one) ἀπολύειν (to release Him). ¹⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) τὸν (the) Ἅγιον (Holy) καὶ (and) Δίκαιον (Righteous One) ἠρνήσασθε (denied), καὶ (and) ᾐτήσασθε (requested) ἄνδρα (a man), φονέα (a murderer), χαρισθῆναι (to be granted) ὑμῖν (to you); ¹⁵ τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἀρχηγὸν (the Author) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) ἀπεκτείνατε (you killed), ὃν (whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἤγειρεν (has raised up) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), οὗ (whereof) ἡμεῖς (we) μάρτυρές (witnesses) ἐσμεν (are).

¹⁸ ᾔδει (He knew) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) διὰ (through) φθόνον (envy) παρέδωκαν (they delivered up) αὐτόν (him).

⁴⁵ ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (however) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐπλήσθησαν (they were filled) ζήλου (with jealousy) καὶ (and) ἀντέλεγον (began contradicting) τοῖς (the things) ὑπὸ (by) Παύλου (Paul) λαλουμένοις (spoken), βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming).

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another).

¹⁴ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ζῆλον (jealousy) πικρὸν (bitter) ἔχετε (you have), καὶ (and) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), μὴ (not) κατακαυχᾶσθε (boast of it) καὶ (and) ψεύδεσθε (lie) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth). ¹⁵ οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) ἄνωθεν (from above) κατερχομένη (coming down), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπίγειος (is earthly), ψυχική (unspiritual), δαιμονιώδης (demonic). ¹⁶ ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἐριθεία (self-interest exist), ἐκεῖ (there will be) ἀκαταστασία (disorder) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) φαῦλον (evil) πρᾶγμα (thing).

⁵ ἢ (Or) δοκεῖτε (think you) ὅτι (that) κενῶς (in vain) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) λέγει (says), “Πρὸς (With) φθόνον (envy) ἐπιποθεῖ (yearns) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὃ (that) κατῴκισεν (He has made to dwell) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us)?”

¹² οὐ (not) καθὼς (as) Κάϊν (Cain), ἐκ (who of) τοῦ (the) πονηροῦ (evil one) ἦν (was) καὶ (and) ἔσφαξεν (slew) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) χάριν (because of) τίνος (what) ἔσφαξεν (he slayed) αὐτόν (him)? ὅτι (Because) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him) πονηρὰ (evil) ἦν (were), τὰ (those) δὲ (however) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), δίκαια (righteous).

²⁰ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀρχιερεῖς (the chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) ἔπεισαν (persuaded) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἵνα (that) αἰτήσωνται (they should ask for) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas), τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπολέσωσιν (should destroy).

⁴⁰ Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (then) πάλιν (again) λέγοντες (saying), “Μὴ (Not) τοῦτον (this one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas)!” ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Βαραββᾶς (Barabbas) λῃστής (an insurrectionist).

¹⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) τὸν (the) Ἅγιον (Holy) καὶ (and) Δίκαιον (Righteous One) ἠρνήσασθε (denied), καὶ (and) ᾐτήσασθε (requested) ἄνδρα (a man), φονέα (a murderer), χαρισθῆναι (to be granted) ὑμῖν (to you);

² λέγοντες (saying), “Ποῦ (Where) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) τεχθεὶς (having been born) βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)? εἴδομεν (We saw) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸν (the) ἀστέρα (star) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀνατολῇ (east), καὶ (and) ἤλθομεν (are come) προσκυνῆσαι (to worship) αὐτῷ (Him).” ³ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) βασιλεὺς (King) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἐταράχθη (he was troubled), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him). ⁴ καὶ (And) συναγαγὼν (having gathered together) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), ἐπυνθάνετο (he was inquiring) παρ’ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ποῦ (where) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) γεννᾶται (was to be born).

⁵ “Εἴπατε (Say) τῇ (to the) θυγατρὶ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεταί (comes) σοι (to you), πραῢς (gentle) καὶ (and) ἐπιβεβηκὼς (mounted) ἐπὶ (on) ὄνον (a donkey), καὶ (even) ἐπὶ (upon) πῶλον (a colt), υἱὸν (the foal) ὑποζυγίου (of a beast of burden).’”

²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τί (What) οὖν (then) ποιήσω (should I do with) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), τὸν (who) λεγόμενον (is called) Χριστόν (Christ)?” Λέγουσιν (They say) πάντες (all), “Σταυρωθήτω (Let Him be crucified).” ²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he said), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did He commit)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) περισσῶς (all the more) ἔκραζον (they kept crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταυρωθήτω (Let Him be crucified).”

⁹ καὶ (And) οἱ (those) προάγοντες (going before) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out): “Ὡσαννά (Hosanna)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” ¹⁰ “Εὐλογημένη (Blessed) ἡ (is the) ἐρχομένη (coming) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) ἡμῶν (of us), Δαυίδ (David)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!” ¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple), καὶ (and) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around on) πάντα (all things), ὀψὲ (late) ἤδη (already) οὔσης (being) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour), ἐξῆλθεν (He went out) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δώδεκα (Twelve).

¹ Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (early) πρωῒ (in the morning), συμβούλιον (a counsel) ποιήσαντες* (having formed) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), καὶ (and) γραμματέων (scribes), καὶ (and) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) συνέδριον (Council), δήσαντες (having bound) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἀπήνεγκαν (they led Him away) καὶ (and) παρέδωκαν (delivered Him) Πιλάτῳ (to Pilate). ² Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησεν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτῷ (to him), λέγει (He says), “Σὺ (You) λέγεις (have said).”

² ἤρξαντο (They began) δὲ (then) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Τοῦτον (This man) εὕραμεν (we found) διαστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) κωλύοντα (forbidding) φόρους (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) διδόναι (to be given), καὶ (and) λέγοντα (declaring) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) Χριστὸν (Christ), βασιλέα (a king), εἶναι (to be).”

²⁰ Πάλιν (Again) δὲ (therefore) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) προσεφώνησεν (called) αὐτοῖς (to them), θέλων (wishing) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ²¹ οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπεφώνουν (they were crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρου (Crucify), σταύρου (crucify) αὐτόν (Him).” ²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) τρίτον (a third time) εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did commit) οὗτος (this man)? οὐδὲν (No) αἴτιον (cause) θανάτου (of death) εὗρον (found I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him). παιδεύσας (Having chastised) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπολύσω (I will release Him).” ²³ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπέκειντο (they were urgent), φωναῖς (with voices) μεγάλαις (loud), αἰτούμενοι (asking for) αὐτὸν (Him) σταυρωθῆναι (to be crucified). καὶ (And) κατίσχυον (were prevailing) αἱ (the) φωναὶ (voices) αὐτῶν (of them). ²⁴ καὶ (and) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐπέκρινεν (sentenced) γενέσθαι (to be done) τὸ (the) αἴτημα (demand) αὐτῶν (of them).

³¹ τοῦτον (Him) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Ἀρχηγὸν (as Prince) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρα (Savior) ὕψωσεν (exalted) τῇ (by the) δεξιᾷ (right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) μετάνοιαν (repentance) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel) καὶ (and) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins).

⁴ λέγων (saying), “Ἥμαρτον (I sinned), παραδοὺς (having betrayed) αἷμα (blood) ἀθῷον (innocent).” Οἱ (-) δὲ (Then) εἶπαν (they said), “Τί (What is that) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us)? σὺ (You) ὄψῃ (will see).”

¹⁹ Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat), ἀπέστειλεν (sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), λέγουσα (saying), “Μηδὲν (Let there be nothing) σοὶ (between you) καὶ (and) τῷ (the) δικαίῳ (righteous man) ἐκείνῳ (that); πολλὰ (many things) γὰρ (for) ἔπαθον (I suffered) σήμερον (today) κατ’ (in) ὄναρ (a dream) δι’ (because of) αὐτόν (Him).”

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he said), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did He commit)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) περισσῶς (all the more) ἔκραζον (they kept crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταυρωθήτω (Let Him be crucified).” ²⁴ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ὅτι (that) οὐδὲν (nothing) ὠφελεῖ (it availed), ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) θόρυβος (a riot) γίνεται (is arising), λαβὼν (having taken) ὕδωρ (water), ἀπενίψατο (he washed) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἀπέναντι* (before) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd), λέγων (saying), “Ἀθῷός (Guiltless) εἰμι (I am) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τούτου (of this). ὑμεῖς (For yourselves) ὄψεσθε (you will see).” ²⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) εἶπεν (said), “Τὸ (The) αἷμα (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐφ’ (be on) ἡμᾶς (us), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ἡμῶν (of us).”

⁵⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἑκατόνταρχος (the centurion) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) τηροῦντες (keeping guard over) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἰδόντες (having seen) τὸν (the) σεισμὸν (earthquake) καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) γενόμενα* (taking place), ἐφοβήθησαν (feared) σφόδρα (greatly), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἀληθῶς (Truly) Θεοῦ (God’s) Υἱὸς (Son) ἦν (was) οὗτος (this).”

⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), “Οὐδὲν (Not) εὑρίσκω (find I) αἴτιον (guilt) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this).”

¹⁴ εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Προσηνέγκατέ (You brought) μοι (to me) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) τοῦτον (this), ὡς (as) ἀποστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸν (the) λαόν (people); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἐνώπιον (before) ὑμῶν (you) ἀνακρίνας (having examined Him), οὐθὲν (nothing) εὗρον (found) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this) αἴτιον (guilty) ὧν (of that) κατηγορεῖτε (accusation you are bringing) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (No), οὐδὲ (not even) Ἡρῴδης (Herod did); ἀνέπεμψεν (he sent back) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸν (Him) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us). καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄξιον (worthy) θανάτου (of death) ἐστὶν (is) πεπραγμένον (done) αὐτῷ (by Him).

²¹ οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπεφώνουν (they were crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρου (Crucify), σταύρου (crucify) αὐτόν (Him).”

⁴¹ καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) μὲν (indeed) δικαίως (justly)? ἄξια (Worthy) γὰρ (for) ὧν (of what) ἐπράξαμεν (we did) ἀπολαμβάνομεν (we are receiving); οὗτος (this man) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄτοπον (wrong) ἔπραξεν (did).”

⁴⁷ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) ἑκατοντάρχης (centurion) τὸ (that) γενόμενον (having taken place), ἐδόξαζεν (he began glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), λέγων (saying), “Ὄντως (Certainly) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this) δίκαιος (righteous) ἦν (was).”

³⁸ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τί (What) ἐστιν (is) ἀλήθεια (truth)?” Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) εἰπὼν (having said), πάλιν (again) ἐξῆλθεν (he went out) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) οὐδεμίαν (no) εὑρίσκω (find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) αἰτίαν (guilt).

⁶ Ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) εἶδον (saw) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), ἐκραύγασαν (they cried out) λέγοντες (saying), “Σταύρωσον (Crucify)! σταύρωσον (Crucify)!” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Λάβετε (Take) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑμεῖς (yourselves) καὶ (and) σταυρώσατε (crucify Him); ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) οὐχ (no) εὑρίσκω (find) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) αἰτίαν (guilt).”

¹² Ἐκ (Out of) τούτου (this) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐζήτει (was seeking) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) αὐτόν (Him); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews) ἐκραύγασαν (cried out), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) τοῦτον (this man) ἀπολύσῃς (you release), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) φίλος (a friend) τοῦ (-) Καίσαρος (of Caesar). πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) βασιλέα (a king) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ποιῶν (making), ἀντιλέγει (speaks against) τῷ (-) Καίσαρι (Caesar).” ¹³ Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), ἀκούσας (having heard) τῶν (the) λόγων (words) τούτων (these), ἤγαγεν (brought) ἔξω (out) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐκάθισεν (sat down) ἐπὶ (upon) βήματος (the judgment seat) εἰς (at) τόπον (a place) λεγόμενον (called) Λιθόστρωτον (the Stone Pavement); Ἑβραϊστὶ (in Hebrew) δὲ (now), Γαββαθα (Gabbatha). ¹⁴ ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) Παρασκευὴ (the Day of Preparation) τοῦ (of the) πάσχα (Passover); ὥρα (the hour) ἦν (was) ὡς (about) ἕκτη (the sixth). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (king) ὑμῶν (of you)!” ¹⁵ Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (therefore), “Ἐκεῖνοι (With Him) Ἆρον (away), ἆρον (away)! σταύρωσον (Crucify) αὐτόν (Him)!” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τὸν (The) Βασιλέα (King) ὑμῶν (of you) σταυρώσω (shall I crucify)?” Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχομεν (we have) βασιλέα (a king), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Καίσαρα (Caesar).”

⁵⁴ Ἀκούοντες (Hearing) δὲ (now) ταῦτα (these things), διεπρίοντο (they were cut) ταῖς (in the) καρδίαις (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἔβρυχον (began gnashing) τοὺς (the) ὀδόντας (teeth) ἐπ’ (at) αὐτόν (him). ⁵⁵ ὑπάρχων (He being) δὲ (however) πλήρης (full) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), ἀτενίσας (having looked intently) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), εἶδεν (saw) δόξαν (the glory) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἑστῶτα (standing) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ⁵⁶ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (he said), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), θεωρῶ (I see) τοὺς (the) οὐρανοὺς (heavens) διηνοιγμένους (having been opened), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) ἑστῶτα (standing) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ⁵⁷ Κράξαντες (Having cried out) δὲ (then) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), συνέσχον (they held) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ὥρμησαν (rushed) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (him),

³⁴ ἐπιγνόντες (Having recognized) δὲ (however) ὅτι (that) Ἰουδαῖός (a Jew) ἐστιν (he is), φωνὴ (a cry) ἐγένετο (there was) μία (one) ἐκ (from) πάντων (all), ὡς (about) ἐπὶ (ongoing) ὥρας (hours) δύο (two) κραζόντων* (crying out), “Μεγάλη (Great is) ἡ (-) Ἄρτεμις (Artemis) Ἐφεσίων (of the Ephesians).”

²² Ἤκουον (They were listening) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (to him) ἄχρι (until) τούτου (this) τοῦ (-) λόγου (word), καὶ (and) ἐπῆραν (they lifted up) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγοντες (saying), “Αἶρε (Away with) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), τὸν (the) τοιοῦτον (such). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) καθῆκεν (it is fit) αὐτὸν (he) ζῆν (to live)!” ²³ Κραυγαζόντων (Were crying out) τε (then) αὐτῶν (they), καὶ (and) ῥιπτούντων (casting off) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments), καὶ (and) κονιορτὸν (dust) βαλλόντων (throwing) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ἀέρα (air).

²⁶ Τοιοῦτος (Such) γὰρ (indeed) ἡμῖν (for us) καὶ (also) ἔπρεπεν (was fitting) ἀρχιερεύς (a high priest), ὅσιος (holy), ἄκακος (innocent), ἀμίαντος (undefiled), κεχωρισμένος (having been separated) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners), καὶ (and) ὑψηλότερος (higher) τῶν (than the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) γενόμενος (having become),

¹⁹ ἀλλὰ (but) τιμίῳ (by the precious) αἵματι (blood), ὡς (as) ἀμνοῦ (of a lamb) ἀμώμου (without blemish) καὶ (and) ἀσπίλου (without spot), Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹⁹ καὶ (and) παραδώσουσιν (they will betray) αὐτὸν (Him) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εἰς (unto), τὸ (-) ἐμπαῖξαι (to mock) καὶ (and) μαστιγῶσαι (to flog) καὶ (and) σταυρῶσαι (to crucify); καὶ (and) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐγερθήσεται (He will rise again).”

²⁶ Τότε (Then) ἀπέλυσεν (he released) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas); τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) φραγελλώσας (having flogged), παρέδωκεν (He delivered up Him), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified).

³⁴ καὶ (And) ἐμπαίξουσιν (they will mock) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) ἐμπτύσουσιν (will spit upon) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) μαστιγώσουσιν (will flog) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (will kill), καὶ (and) μετὰ (on the) τρεῖς (third) ἡμέρας (day) ἀναστήσεται (He will rise again).”

³³ καὶ (And) μαστιγώσαντες (having flogged Him), ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) αὐτόν (Him); καὶ (and) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) τρίτῃ (third) ἀναστήσεται (He will rise again).”

¹ Τότε (At that time) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἐμαστίγωσεν (flogged Him).

¹⁹ ἕτερον (Other) δὲ (however) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) οὐκ (none) εἶδον (I saw), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Ἰάκωβον (James), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord).

²⁴ ὃς (Who) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) αὐτὸς (Himself) ἀνήνεγκεν (bore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) ξύλον (tree), ἵνα (so that), ταῖς (-) ἁμαρτίαις (to sins) ἀπογενόμενοι (having been dead), τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) ζήσωμεν (we might live). “Οὗ (By whose) τῷ (-) μώλωπι (wounds) ἰάθητε (you have been healed).”

³ Τότε (Then) συνήχθησαν (were gathered together) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) αὐλὴν (courtyard) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest), τοῦ (who) λεγομένου (is called) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas),

²⁷ Τότε (Then) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers) τοῦ (of the) ἡγεμόνος (governor), παραλαβόντες (having taken with them) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium), συνήγαγον (gathered) ἐπ’ (before) αὐτὸν (Him) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) σπεῖραν (cohort). ²⁸ καὶ (And) ἐκδύσαντες (having stripped) αὐτὸν (Him), χλαμύδα (a robe) κοκκίνην (scarlet) περιέθηκαν (they put around) αὐτῷ (Him). ²⁹ καὶ (And) πλέξαντες (having twisted together) στέφανον (a crown) ἐξ (of) ἀκανθῶν (thorns), ἐπέθηκαν (they put it) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) κεφαλῆς (head) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) κάλαμον (a reed) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δεξιᾷ (right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) γονυπετήσαντες (having bowed the knees) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), ἐνέπαιξαν (they mocked) αὐτῷ (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Χαῖρε (Hail), Βασιλεῦ (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)!” ³⁰ καὶ (And) ἐμπτύσαντες (having spit) εἰς (upon) αὐτὸν (Him), ἔλαβον (they took) τὸν (the) κάλαμον (reed) καὶ (and) ἔτυπτον (kept striking Him) εἰς (on) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³¹ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐνέπαιξαν (they had mocked) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐξέδυσαν (they took off) αὐτὸν (Him) τὴν (the) χλαμύδα (robe), καὶ (and) ἐνέδυσαν (they put on) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἀπήγαγον (led away) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) τὸ (-) σταυρῶσαι (crucify Him).

²⁸ Ἄγουσιν (They are leading) οὖν (then) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) πρωΐ (early), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐκ (not) εἰσῆλθον (entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) μιανθῶσιν (they should be defiled), ἀλλὰ (but) φάγωσιν (might eat) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover).

³³ Εἰσῆλθεν (Entered) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), καὶ (and) ἐφώνησεν (he called) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?”

¹ Ἀνὴρ (A man) δέ (now) τις (certain) ἐν (in) Καισαρείᾳ (Caesarea), ὀνόματι (named) Κορνήλιος (Cornelius), ἑκατοντάρχης (was a centurion) ἐκ (of) σπείρης (the Cohort) τῆς (that) καλουμένης (is called) Ἰταλικῆς (Italian),

¹¹ ἐξουθενήσας (Having set at naught) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him), ‹καὶ› (also) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) στρατεύμασιν (troops) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐμπαίξας (having mocked Him), περιβαλὼν (having put on Him) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) λαμπρὰν (splendid), ἀνέπεμψεν (sent back) αὐτὸν (him) τῷ (to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate).

² καὶ (And) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), πλέξαντες (having twisted together) στέφανον (a crown) ἐξ (of) ἀκανθῶν (thorns), ἐπέθηκαν (put it on) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τῇ (the) κεφαλῇ (head), καὶ (and) ἱμάτιον (a robe) πορφυροῦν (purple) περιέβαλον (cast around) αὐτόν (Him), ³ καὶ (and) ἤρχοντο (they began coming up) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (saying), “Χαῖρε (Hail), ὁ (-) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)!” καὶ (And) ἐδίδοσαν (they kept giving) αὐτῷ (Him) ῥαπίσματα (blows with the palm).

⁴² “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved). ἑαυτὸν (Himself) οὐ (not) δύναται (is He able) σῶσαι (to save). Βασιλεὺς (King) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel) ἐστιν (He is). καταβάτω (Let Him descend) νῦν (now) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross), καὶ (and) πιστεύσομεν (we will believe) ἐπ’ (in) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴³ πέποιθεν (He trusted) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ῥυσάσθω (Let Him deliver) νῦν (now) εἰ (if) θέλει (He wants) αὐτόν (Him). εἶπεν (He said) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-), ‘Θεοῦ (Of God) εἰμι (I am) Υἱός (the Son).’”

² Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησεν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτῷ (to him), λέγει (He says), “Σὺ (You) λέγεις (have said).”

²⁹ Καὶ (And) οἱ (those) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) ἐβλασφήμουν (were railing at) αὐτὸν (Him), κινοῦντες (shaking) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Οὐὰ (Aha)! ὁ (The One) καταλύων (destroying) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) καὶ (and) οἰκοδομῶν (building it) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days), ³⁰ σῶσον (save) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καταβὰς (having descended) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross)!” ³¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), ἐμπαίζοντες (mocking) πρὸς (among) ἀλλήλους (one another), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved); ἑαυτὸν (Himself) οὐ (not) δύναται (He is able) σῶσαι (to save). ³² ὁ (The) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), καταβάτω (let Him descend) νῦν (now) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross), ἵνα (that) ἴδωμεν (we might see) καὶ (and) πιστεύσωμεν (believe)!” καὶ (And) οἱ (those) συνεσταυρωμένοι (being crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ὠνείδιζον (were upbraiding) αὐτόν (Him).

³⁶ Ἐνέπαιξαν (Mocked) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), προσερχόμενοι (coming near), ὄξος (sour wine) προσφέροντες (offering) αὐτῷ (Him), ³⁷ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself)!”

¹² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἠλίας (Elijah) μὲν (indeed) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρῶτον (first), ἀποκαθιστάνει (restores) πάντα (all things); καὶ (and) πῶς (how) γέγραπται (has it been written) ἐπὶ (of) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), ἵνα (that) πολλὰ (many things) πάθῃ (He should suffer) καὶ (and) ἐξουδενηθῇ (be set at naught)?

⁶⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤρξαντό (began) τινες (some) ἐμπτύειν (to spit upon) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) περικαλύπτειν (to cover up) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face), καὶ (and) κολαφίζειν (to strike) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) λέγειν (to say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Προφήτευσον (Prophesy)!” καὶ (And) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers) ῥαπίσμασιν (with the palms) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔλαβον (received).

⁶³ Καὶ (And) οἱ (the) ἄνδρες (men) οἱ (who) συνέχοντες (are holding) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐνέπαιζον (began mocking) αὐτῷ (Him), δέροντες (beating Him).

³⁶ Ἐνέπαιξαν (Mocked) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), προσερχόμενοι (coming near), ὄξος (sour wine) προσφέροντες (offering) αὐτῷ (Him),

⁴ Ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what was) λέγει (spoken) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) χρηματισμός (divine answer)? “Κατέλιπον (I have left) ἐμαυτῷ (to Myself) ἑπτακισχιλίους (seven thousand) ἄνδρας (men) οἵτινες (who) οὐκ (not) ἔκαμψαν (have bowed) γόνυ (the knee) τῇ (-) Βάαλ (to Baal).”

¹⁰ Σὺ (You) δὲ (however), τί (why) κρίνεις (judge you) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) σου (or you), ἢ (or) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) τί (why) ἐξουθενεῖς (do despise) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) σου (of you)? πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) παραστησόμεθα (we will stand before) τῷ (the) βήματι (judgment seat) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God). ¹¹ γέγραπται (It has been written) γάρ (for): “Ζῶ (Live) ἐγώ (I), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (to Me) κάμψει (will bow) πᾶν (every) γόνυ (knee), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) γλῶσσα (tongue) ἐξομολογήσεται (will confess) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).”

¹⁰ ἵνα (that) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) πᾶν (every) γόνυ (knee) κάμψῃ (should bow), ἐπουρανίων (in the heavens) καὶ (and) ἐπιγείων (on earth) καὶ (and) καταχθονίων (under the earth),

² ἀφορῶντες (looking) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τῆς (of our) πίστεως (faith) ἀρχηγὸν (founder) καὶ (and) τελειωτὴν (perfecter), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃς (who) ἀντὶ (in view of) τῆς (the) προκειμένης (lying before) αὐτῷ (Him) χαρᾶς (joy), ὑπέμεινεν (endured) σταυρὸν (the cross), αἰσχύνης (its shame) καταφρονήσας (having despised), ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (right hand) τε (and) τοῦ (of the) θρόνου (throne) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) κεκάθικεν (sat down). ³ ἀναλογίσασθε (Consider fully) γὰρ (for), τὸν (the One) τοιαύτην (such great) ὑπομεμενηκότα (having endured) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners) εἰς (against) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἀντιλογίαν (hostility), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) κάμητε (you shall grow weary), ταῖς (in the) ψυχαῖς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐκλυόμενοι (fainting).

¹³ τοίνυν (Therefore) ἐξερχώμεθα (we should go forth) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔξω (outside) τῆς (the) παρεμβολῆς (camp), τὸν (the) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) αὐτοῦ (of Him) φέροντες (bearing).

³¹ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐνέπαιξαν (they had mocked) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐξέδυσαν (they took off) αὐτὸν (Him) τὴν (the) χλαμύδα (robe), καὶ (and) ἐνέδυσαν (they put on) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἀπήγαγον (led away) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) τὸ (-) σταυρῶσαι (crucify Him). ³² Ἐξερχόμενοι (Going forth) δὲ (now), εὗρον (they found) ἄνθρωπον (a man) Κυρηναῖον (of Cyrene), ὀνόματι (named) Σίμωνα (Simon). τοῦτον (Him) ἠγγάρευσαν (they compelled) ἵνα (that) ἄρῃ (he might carry) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

²⁷ ὅστις (Whoever) οὐ (not) βαστάζει (carries) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) καὶ (and) ἔρχεται (comes) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me), οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) εἶναί (to be) μου (My) μαθητής (disciple).

²⁶ Καὶ (And) ὡς (as) ἀπήγαγον (they led away) αὐτόν (Him), ἐπιλαβόμενοι (having laid hold on) Σίμωνά (Simon), τινα (a certain) Κυρηναῖον (of Cyrene), ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἀπ’ (from) ἀγροῦ (the country), ἐπέθηκαν (they put upon) αὐτῷ (him) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross), φέρειν (to carry) ὄπισθεν (behind) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹⁸ Εἰ (If) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὑμᾶς (you) μισεῖ (hates), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐμὲ (Me) πρῶτον (before) ὑμῶν (you) μεμίσηκεν (it has hated). ¹⁹ εἰ (If) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἦτε (you were), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ἂν (-) τὸ (as its) ἴδιον (own) ἐφίλει (would love you); ὅτι (because) δὲ (however) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) ἐστέ (you are), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world), διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) μισεῖ (hates) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world). ²⁰ Μνημονεύετε (Remember) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said) ὑμῖν (to you): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) δοῦλος (a servant) μείζων (greater than) τοῦ (the) κυρίου (master) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ εἰ (If) ἐμὲ (Me) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted), καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) διώξουσιν (they will persecute); εἰ (if) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) ἐτήρησαν (they kept), καὶ (also) τὸν (-) ὑμέτερον (yours) τηρήσουσιν (they will keep).

¹⁰ Φρυγίαν (Phrygia) τε (both) καὶ (and) Παμφυλίαν (Pamphylia), Αἴγυπτον (Egypt) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) μέρη (parts) τῆς (-) Λιβύης (of Libya) τῆς (that) κατὰ (are around) Κυρήνην (Cyrene), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐπιδημοῦντες (visiting here) Ῥωμαῖοι (from Rome);

⁹ ἀνέστησαν (Arose) δέ (however) τινες (certain) τῶν (of those) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) συναγωγῆς (synagogue) τῆς (-) λεγομένης (called) Λιβερτίνων (Freedmen), καὶ (including) Κυρηναίων (Cyrenians) καὶ (and) Ἀλεξανδρέων (Alexandrians) καὶ (and) τῶν (of those) ἀπὸ (from) Κιλικίας (Cilicia) καὶ (and) Ἀσίας (Asia), συζητοῦντες (disputing) τῷ (with) Στεφάνῳ (Stephen).

²⁰ Ἦσαν (Were) δέ (however) τινες (some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), ἄνδρες (men) Κύπριοι (of Cyprus) καὶ (and) Κυρηναῖοι (of Cyrene), οἵτινες (who) ἐλθόντες (having come) εἰς (into) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch), ἐλάλουν (were speaking) καὶ (also) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) Ἑλληνιστάς (Hellenists), εὐαγγελιζόμενοι (proclaiming the gospel) — τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

¹ Ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) Ἀντιοχείᾳ (Antioch), κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) οὖσαν (being there) ἐκκλησίαν (church), προφῆται (prophets) καὶ (and) διδάσκαλοι (teachers), ὅ (-) τε (both) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) καὶ (and) Συμεὼν (Simeon) ὁ (who) καλούμενος (was called) Νίγερ (Niger), καὶ (and) Λούκιος (Lucius) ὁ (the) Κυρηναῖος (Cyrenian), Μαναήν (Manaen) τε (also)— Ἡρῴδου (Herod) τοῦ (the) τετραάρχου (tetrarch) σύντροφος (brought up with)— καὶ (and) Σαῦλος (Saul).

³³ Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντες (having come) εἰς (to) τόπον (a place) λεγόμενον (called) Γολγοθᾶ (Golgotha), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) κρανίου (of a Skull) τόπος (Place) λεγόμενος (called), ³⁴ ἔδωκαν (they gave) αὐτῷ (Him) πιεῖν (to drink) οἶνον (wine) μετὰ (with) χολῆς (gall) μεμιγμένον (mingled); καὶ (and) γευσάμενος (having tasted), οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησεν (He was willing) πιεῖν (to drink it). ³⁵ Σταυρώσαντες (Having crucified) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (Him), διεμερίσαντο (they divided) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), βάλλοντες (casting) κλῆρον (lots). ³⁶ καὶ (And) καθήμενοι (sitting down), ἐτήρουν (they were guarding) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκεῖ (there). ³⁷ καὶ (And) ἐπέθηκαν (they put up) ἐπάνω (over) τῆς (the) κεφαλῆς (head) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὴν (the) αἰτίαν (accusation) αὐτοῦ (of Him) γεγραμμένην (written): ΟΥΤΟΣ* (This) ΕΣΤΙΝ (is) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus), Ο* (the) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews). ³⁸ Τότε (At the same time) σταυροῦνται (are crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) δύο (two) λῃσταί (robbers), εἷς (one) ἐκ (at the) δεξιῶν (right hand), καὶ (and) εἷς (one) ἐξ (at the) εὐωνύμων (left). ³⁹ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) ἐβλασφήμουν (kept railing at) αὐτὸν (Him), κινοῦντες (wagging) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) αὐτῶν (of them) ⁴⁰ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Ὁ (The One) καταλύων (destroying) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) οἰκοδομῶν (building it), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself)! εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (also) κατάβηθι (descend) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross)!” ⁴¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) ‹καὶ› (also) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), ἐμπαίζοντες (mocking), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), ἔλεγον (were saying), ⁴² “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved). ἑαυτὸν (Himself) οὐ (not) δύναται (is He able) σῶσαι (to save). Βασιλεὺς (King) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel) ἐστιν (He is). καταβάτω (Let Him descend) νῦν (now) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross), καὶ (and) πιστεύσομεν (we will believe) ἐπ’ (in) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴³ πέποιθεν (He trusted) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ῥυσάσθω (Let Him deliver) νῦν (now) εἰ (if) θέλει (He wants) αὐτόν (Him). εἶπεν (He said) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-), ‘Θεοῦ (Of God) εἰμι (I am) Υἱός (the Son).’” ⁴⁴ Τὸ (-) δ’ (And) αὐτὸ (likewise) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λῃσταὶ (robbers), οἱ (those) συσταυρωθέντες (having been crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), ὠνείδιζον (were upbraiding) αὐτόν (Him).

²⁷ Ἠκολούθει (Were following) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (Him) πολὺ (a great) πλῆθος (multitude) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), καὶ (and) γυναικῶν (of women), αἳ (who) ἐκόπτοντο (were mourning) καὶ (and) ἐθρήνουν (lamenting for) αὐτόν (Him). ²⁸ στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὰς (them), ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Θυγατέρες (Daughters) Ἰερουσαλήμ (of Jerusalem), μὴ (not) κλαίετε (weep) ἐπ’ (for) ἐμέ (Me), πλὴν (but) ἐφ’ (for) ἑαυτὰς (yourselves) κλαίετε (weep), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (for) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you). ²⁹ ὅτι (For) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἔρχονται (are coming) ἡμέραι (days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) ἐροῦσιν (they will say), ‘Μακάριαι (Blessed are) αἱ (the) στεῖραι (barren), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) κοιλίαι (wombs) αἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἐγέννησαν (did bear), καὶ (and) μαστοὶ (breasts) οἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἔθρεψαν (nursed).’ ³⁰ τότε (Then) ‘Ἄρξονται (They will begin) λέγειν (to say) τοῖς (to the) ὄρεσιν (mountains), “Πέσετε* (Fall) ἐφ’ (upon) ἡμᾶς (us),” Καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) βουνοῖς (hills), “Καλύψατε (Cover) ἡμᾶς (us).”’ ³¹ Ὅτι (For) εἰ (if) ἐν (in) ‹τῷ› (the) ὑγρῷ (green) ξύλῳ (tree), ταῦτα (these things) ποιοῦσιν (they do); ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ξηρῷ (dry), τί (what) γένηται (might take place)?” ³² Ἤγοντο (Were being led away) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἕτεροι (other) κακοῦργοι (criminals) δύο (two), σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀναιρεθῆναι (to be put to death). ³³ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἦλθον (they came) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τὸν (-) καλούμενον (called) Κρανίον (The Skull), ἐκεῖ (there) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) κακούργους (criminals), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἐκ (on the) δεξιῶν (right); ὃν (one) δὲ (now) ἐξ (on) ἀριστερῶν (the left). ³⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔλεγεν (was saying), “Πάτερ (Father), ἄφες (forgive) αὐτοῖς (them), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) οἴδασιν (they know) τί (what) ποιοῦσιν (they do).” διαμεριζόμενοι (Dividing) δὲ (then) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἔβαλον (they cast) κλήρους (lots). ³⁵ Καὶ (And) εἱστήκει (stood) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) θεωρῶν (beholding). ἐξεμυκτήριζον (Were deriding Him) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved); σωσάτω (let Him save) ἑαυτόν (Himself) εἰ (if) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἐκλεκτός (Chosen One).” ³⁶ Ἐνέπαιξαν (Mocked) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), προσερχόμενοι (coming near), ὄξος (sour wine) προσφέροντες (offering) αὐτῷ (Him), ³⁷ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself)!” ³⁸ Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἐπιγραφὴ (an inscription) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτῷ (Him), Ο* (The) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews) ΟΥΤΟΣ* (This).

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) βαστάζων (bearing) ἑαυτῷ (His own) τὸν (-) σταυρὸν (cross), ἐξῆλθεν (He went out) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) λεγόμενον (called) Κρανίου (of the Skull) τόπον (Place), ὃ (which) λέγεται (is called) Ἑβραϊστὶ (in Hebrew) Γολγοθᾶ (Golgotha), ¹⁸ ὅπου (where) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἄλλους (others) δύο (two), ἐντεῦθεν (on this side) καὶ (and) ἐντεῦθεν (on that side), μέσον (in between) δὲ (now) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ¹⁹ Ἔγραψεν (Wrote) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τίτλον (a title) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (put it) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) γεγραμμένον (written): ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus) Ο* (of) ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΣ (Nazareth), Ο* (the) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews). ²⁰ Τοῦτον (This) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) τίτλον (title) πολλοὶ (many) ἀνέγνωσαν (read) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ὅτι (for) ἐγγὺς (near) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) τόπος (place), τῆς (the) πόλεως (city), ὅπου (where) ἐσταυρώθη (was crucified) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἦν (it was) γεγραμμένον (written) Ἑβραϊστί (in Hebrew), Ῥωμαϊστί (in Latin), Ἑλληνιστί (in Greek). ²¹ ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) τῷ (-) Πιλάτῳ (to Pilate) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), “Μὴ (Not) γράφε (write), ‘Ὁ (The) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews),’ ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖνος (He) εἶπεν (said), ‘Βασιλεύς (King) εἰμι (I am) «τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων» (Jews).’” ²² Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Ὃ (What) γέγραφα (I have written), γέγραφα (I have written).” ²³ Οἱ (The) οὖν (then) στρατιῶται (soldiers), ὅτε (when) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἔλαβον (took) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (made) τέσσαρα (four) μέρη (parts), ἑκάστῳ (to each) στρατιώτῃ (soldier) μέρος (a part), καὶ (and also) τὸν (the) χιτῶνα (tunic). ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) χιτὼν (tunic) ἄραφος (seamless), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἄνωθεν (top) ὑφαντὸς (woven) δι’ (throughout) ὅλου (all). ²⁴ εἶπαν (They said) οὖν (therefore) πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another), “Μὴ (Not) σχίσωμεν (let us tear up) αὐτόν (it), ἀλλὰ (but) λάχωμεν (let us cast lots) περὶ (for) αὐτοῦ (it), τίνος (whose) ἔσται (it will be),” ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ‹ἡ (that) λέγουσα› (said): “Διεμερίσαντο (They divided) τὰ (the) ἱμάτιά (garments) μου (of Me) ἑαυτοῖς (among them), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (for) τὸν (the) ἱματισμόν (clothing) μου (of Me) ἔβαλον (they cast) κλῆρον (a lot).” Οἱ (The) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) στρατιῶται (soldiers) ταῦτα (these things) ἐποίησαν (did). ²⁵ Εἱστήκεισαν (Had been standing) δὲ (now) παρὰ (by) τῷ (the) σταυρῷ (cross) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀδελφὴ (sister) τῆς (of the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the wife) τοῦ (-) Κλωπᾶ (of Clopas), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνή (Magdalene). ²⁶ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (His) μητέρα (mother) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) μαθητὴν (disciple) παρεστῶτα (standing by) ὃν (whom) ἠγάπα (He loved), λέγει (says) τῇ (to) μητρί (His mother), “Γύναι (Woman), ἴδε (behold), ὁ (the) υἱός (son) σου (of you).” ²⁷ εἶτα (Then) λέγει (He says) τῷ (to the) μαθητῇ (disciple), “Ἴδε (Behold) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) σου (of you).” καὶ (And) ἀπ’ (from) ἐκείνης (that) τῆς (-) ὥρας (hour) ἔλαβεν (took) ὁ (the) μαθητὴς (disciple) αὐτὴν (her) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own).

¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἐποίησαν (did) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ὡς (as) συνέταξεν (directed) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἡτοίμασαν (prepared) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover).

³⁴ ἔδωκαν (they gave) αὐτῷ (Him) πιεῖν (to drink) οἶνον (wine) μετὰ (with) χολῆς (gall) μεμιγμένον (mingled); καὶ (and) γευσάμενος (having tasted), οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησεν (He was willing) πιεῖν (to drink it).

²⁵ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οὐκέτι (no more) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) πίω (will I drink) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) γενήματος (fruit) τῆς (of the) ἀμπέλου (vine), ἕως (until) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐκείνης (that) ὅταν (when) αὐτὸ (it) πίνω (I drink) καινὸν (anew) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

¹⁸ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), [ὅτι] (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πίω (will I drink) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) γενήματος (fruit) τῆς (of the) ἀμπέλου (vine), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἔλθῃ (shall come).”

²⁸ Μετὰ (After) τοῦτο (this), εἰδὼς (knowing) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἤδη (now) πάντα (all things) τετέλεσται (had been accomplished), ἵνα (so that) τελειωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture), λέγει (He says), “Διψῶ (I thirst).” ²⁹ σκεῦος (A vessel) ἔκειτο (had been set there) ὄξους (of sour wine) μεστόν (full); σπόγγον (a sponge) οὖν (therefore) μεστὸν (filled) τοῦ (with) ὄξους (sour wine), ὑσσώπῳ (a stalk of hyssop) περιθέντες (having put on), προσήνεγκαν (they brought) αὐτοῦ (it) τῷ (to the) στόματι (mouth). ³⁰ ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) τὸ (the) ὄξος (sour wine) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), εἶπεν (He said), “Τετέλεσται (It has been finished).” καὶ (And) κλίνας (having bowed) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head), παρέδωκεν (He yielded up) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit).

³⁰ ὁ (The) Θεὸς (God) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us) ἤγειρεν (raised up) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you) διεχειρίσασθε (killed), κρεμάσαντες (having hanged Him) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree).

²¹ τὸν (The One) μὴ (not) γνόντα (having known) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐποίησεν (He made), ἵνα (so that) ἡμεῖς (we) γενώμεθα (might become) δικαιοσύνη (the righteousness) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).

¹³ Χριστὸς (Christ) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐξηγόρασεν (redeemed) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) κατάρας (curse) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (Law), γενόμενος (having become) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) κατάρα (a curse), ὅτι (for) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἐπικατάρατος (Cursed is) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) κρεμάμενος (hanging) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree)” —

⁴⁵ Ἀπὸ (From) δὲ (then) ἕκτης (the sixth) ὥρας (hour), σκότος (darkness) ἐγένετο (was) ἐπὶ (over) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (land), ἕως (until) ὥρας (the hour) ἐνάτης (ninth).

³³ Καὶ (And) γενομένης (having arrived) ὥρας (the hour) ἕκτης (sixth), σκότος (darkness) ἐγένετο (came) ἐφ’ (over) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (land), ἕως (until) ὥρας (the hour) ἐνάτης (ninth).

⁴⁴ Καὶ (And) ἦν (it was) ἤδη (now) ὡσεὶ (about) ὥρα (the hour) ἕκτη (sixth), καὶ (and) σκότος (darkness) ἐγένετο (came) ἐφ’ (over) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (land) ἕως (until) ὥρας (the hour) ἐνάτης (ninth).

¹⁴ ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) Παρασκευὴ (the Day of Preparation) τοῦ (of the) πάσχα (Passover); ὥρα (the hour) ἦν (was) ὡς (about) ἕκτη (the sixth). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (king) ὑμῶν (of you)!”

¹⁵ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) ὑμεῖς (you) ὑπολαμβάνετε (suppose), οὗτοι (these) μεθύουσιν (are drunkards); ἔστιν (it is) γὰρ (for) ὥρα (the hour) τρίτη (third) τῆς (of the) ἡμέρας (day);

³⁷ καὶ (And) ἐπέθηκαν (they put up) ἐπάνω (over) τῆς (the) κεφαλῆς (head) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὴν (the) αἰτίαν (accusation) αὐτοῦ (of Him) γεγραμμένην (written): ΟΥΤΟΣ* (This) ΕΣΤΙΝ (is) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus), Ο* (the) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews).

¹⁸ ὅπου (where) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἄλλους (others) δύο (two), ἐντεῦθεν (on this side) καὶ (and) ἐντεῦθεν (on that side), μέσον (in between) δὲ (now) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

³⁸ Τότε (At the same time) σταυροῦνται (are crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) δύο (two) λῃσταί (robbers), εἷς (one) ἐκ (at the) δεξιῶν (right hand), καὶ (and) εἷς (one) ἐξ (at the) εὐωνύμων (left).

³² Ἤγοντο (Were being led away) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἕτεροι (other) κακοῦργοι (criminals) δύο (two), σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀναιρεθῆναι (to be put to death). ³³ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἦλθον (they came) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τὸν (-) καλούμενον (called) Κρανίον (The Skull), ἐκεῖ (there) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) κακούργους (criminals), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἐκ (on the) δεξιῶν (right); ὃν (one) δὲ (now) ἐξ (on) ἀριστερῶν (the left).

¹⁸ ὅπου (where) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἄλλους (others) δύο (two), ἐντεῦθεν (on this side) καὶ (and) ἐντεῦθεν (on that side), μέσον (in between) δὲ (now) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

³⁷ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (which) γεγραμμένον (has been written), δεῖ (it behooves) τελεσθῆναι (to be accomplished) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me): ‘Τό (-) Καὶ (And) μετὰ (with) ἀνόμων (the lawless) ἐλογίσθη (He was reckoned).’ καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the things) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me) τέλος (an end) ἔχει (have).”

² ἀφορῶντες (looking) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τῆς (of our) πίστεως (faith) ἀρχηγὸν (founder) καὶ (and) τελειωτὴν (perfecter), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃς (who) ἀντὶ (in view of) τῆς (the) προκειμένης (lying before) αὐτῷ (Him) χαρᾶς (joy), ὑπέμεινεν (endured) σταυρὸν (the cross), αἰσχύνης (its shame) καταφρονήσας (having despised), ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (right hand) τε (and) τοῦ (of the) θρόνου (throne) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) κεκάθικεν (sat down).

⁶¹ εἶπαν (they said), “Οὗτος (This man) ἔφη (has been saying), ‘Δύναμαι (I am able) καταλῦσαι (to destroy) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) διὰ (in) τριῶν (three) ἡμερῶν (days) οἰκοδομῆσαι (to rebuild it).’”

³⁹ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) ἐβλασφήμουν (kept railing at) αὐτὸν (Him), κινοῦντες (wagging) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) αὐτῶν (of them) ⁴⁰ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Ὁ (The One) καταλύων (destroying) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) οἰκοδομῶν (building it), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself)! εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (also) κατάβηθι (descend) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross)!”

⁵⁸ “Ὅτι (-) Ἡμεῖς (We) ἠκούσαμεν (heard) αὐτοῦ (Him) λέγοντος (saying) ὅτι (-), ‘Ἐγὼ (I) καταλύσω (will destroy) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦτον (this), τὸν (the one) χειροποίητον (made with hands), καὶ (and) διὰ (in) τριῶν (three) ἡμερῶν (days) ἄλλον (another), ἀχειροποίητον (not made with hands), οἰκοδομήσω (I will build).’”

¹⁸ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Τί (What) σημεῖον (sign) δεικνύεις (show You) ἡμῖν (to us), ὅτι (that) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (You do)?” ¹⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Λύσατε (Destroy) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦτον (this), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) ἐγερῶ (I will raise up) αὐτόν (it).” ²⁰ Εἶπαν (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Τεσσεράκοντα (Forty) καὶ (and) ἓξ (six) ἔτεσιν (years) οἰκοδομήθη (was built) ὁ (the) ναὸς (temple) οὗτος (this), καὶ (and) σὺ (You) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) ἐγερεῖς (will raise up) αὐτόν (it)?” ²¹ Ἐκεῖνος (He) δὲ (however) ἔλεγεν (was speaking) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) ναοῦ (temple) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ²² ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἠγέρθη (He was raised up) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ἐμνήσθησαν (remembered) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (that) τοῦτο (this) ἔλεγεν (He had said), καὶ (and) ἐπίστευσαν (they believed) τῇ (the) γραφῇ (Scripture) καὶ (and) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (had spoken) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus).

⁴¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) ‹καὶ› (also) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), ἐμπαίζοντες (mocking), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), ἔλεγον (were saying),

³⁵ Καὶ (And) εἱστήκει (stood) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) θεωρῶν (beholding). ἐξεμυκτήριζον (Were deriding Him) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved); σωσάτω (let Him save) ἑαυτόν (Himself) εἰ (if) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἐκλεκτός (Chosen One).”

⁴⁷ Συνήγαγον (Gathered) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) συνέδριον (a council), καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying), “Τί (What) ποιοῦμεν (are we to do)? ὅτι (For) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖ (does) σημεῖα (signs). ⁴⁸ ἐὰν (If) ἀφῶμεν (we shall let him alone) αὐτὸν (Him) οὕτως (like this), πάντες (all) πιστεύσουσιν (will believe) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) ἐλεύσονται (will come) οἱ (the) Ῥωμαῖοι (Romans) καὶ (and) ἀροῦσιν (will take away) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation).” ⁴⁹ Εἷς (One) δέ (however) τις (certain) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), Καϊάφας (Caiaphas), ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ὢν (being) τοῦ (the) ἐνιαυτοῦ (year) ἐκείνου (same), εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know) οὐδέν (nothing), ⁵⁰ οὐδὲ (nor) λογίζεσθε (consider you) ὅτι (that) συμφέρει (it is profitable) ὑμῖν (for you) ἵνα (that) εἷς (one) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἀποθάνῃ (should die) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἀπόληται (should perish).” ⁵¹ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτοῦ (himself) οὐκ (not) εἶπεν (he said), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ὢν (being) τοῦ (the) ἐνιαυτοῦ (year) ἐκείνου (that), ἐπροφήτευσεν (he prophesied) ὅτι (that) ἔμελλεν (was about) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ἔθνους (nation), ⁵² καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ἔθνους (nation) μόνον (only), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὰ (those) διεσκορπισμένα (having been scattered), συναγάγῃ (He might gather together) εἰς (into) ἕν (one).

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀποκρίνεται (answered) αὐτοῖς (them) λέγων (saying), “Ἐλήλυθεν (Has come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour) ἵνα (that) δοξασθῇ (should be glorified) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man). ²⁴ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) κόκκος (grain) τοῦ (-) σίτου (of wheat), πεσὼν (having fallen) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground), ἀποθάνῃ (should die), αὐτὸς (it) μόνος (alone) μένει (abides); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) ἀποθάνῃ (it should die), πολὺν (much) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρει (it bears).

¹⁷ κρεῖττον (It is better) γὰρ (for) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good) εἰ (if) θέλοι (wills it) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πάσχειν (to suffer), ἢ (than) κακοποιοῦντας (doing evil), ¹⁸ ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit),

¹⁷ Πᾶσαι (All) οὖν (therefore) αἱ (the) γενεαὶ (generations) ἀπὸ (from) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ἕως (to) Δαυὶδ (David were) γενεαὶ (generations) δεκατέσσαρες (fourteen); καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) Δαυὶδ (David) ἕως (until) τῆς (the) μετοικεσίας (carrying away) Βαβυλῶνος (to Babylon), γενεαὶ (generations) δεκατέσσαρες (fourteen); καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) μετοικεσίας (carrying away) Βαβυλῶνος (to Babylon) ἕως (until) τοῦ (the) Χριστοῦ (Christ), γενεαὶ (generations) δεκατέσσαρες (fourteen).

⁴⁴ Τὸ (-) δ’ (And) αὐτὸ (likewise) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λῃσταὶ (robbers), οἱ (those) συσταυρωθέντες (having been crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), ὠνείδιζον (were upbraiding) αὐτόν (Him).

⁶¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἐσιώπα (He was silent), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίνατο (did He answer) οὐδέν (nothing). Πάλιν (Again) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ἐπηρώτα (was questioning) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) Εὐλογητοῦ (Blessed One)?” ⁶² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am). καὶ (And) ὄψεσθε (you will see) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐκ (at the) δεξιῶν (right hand) καθήμενον (sitting) τῆς (of) δυνάμεως (Power), καὶ (and) ἐρχόμενον (coming) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) νεφελῶν (clouds) τοῦ (of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven).”

³⁹ Εἷς (One) δὲ (now) τῶν (of the) κρεμασθέντων (having been hanged) κακούργων (criminals) ἐβλασφήμει (was railing at) αὐτόν (Him), ‹λέγων› (saying) “Οὐχὶ (Not) σὺ (you are) εἶ (if) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ)? σῶσον (Save) σεαυτὸν (Yourself) καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us)!” ⁴⁰ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) ἕτερος (other) ἐπιτιμῶν (was rebuking) αὐτῷ (him), ἔφη (saying), “Οὐδὲ (Not even) φοβῇ (do fear) σὺ (you) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ὅτι (that) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) κρίματι (judgment) εἶ (you are), ⁴¹ καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) μὲν (indeed) δικαίως (justly)? ἄξια (Worthy) γὰρ (for) ὧν (of what) ἐπράξαμεν (we did) ἀπολαμβάνομεν (we are receiving); οὗτος (this man) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄτοπον (wrong) ἔπραξεν (did).” ⁴² καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (he was saying), “Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), μνήσθητί (remember) μου (me) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃς (You come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) σου (of You)!” ⁴³ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἀμήν (Truly) σοι (to you) λέγω (I say), σήμερον (today) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἔσῃ (you will be) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Παραδείσῳ (Paradise).”

⁴⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) Ναθαναήλ (Nathanael), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); σὺ (You) Βασιλεὺς (King) εἶ (are) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).”

¹³ ἔλαβον (took) τὰ (the) βαΐα (branches) τῶν (of the) φοινίκων (palm trees) καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθον (went out) εἰς (to) ὑπάντησιν (meet) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) ἐκραύγαζον (were shouting): “Ὡσαννά (Hosanna)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel)!”

²⁵ ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to him) οἱ (the) ἄλλοι (other) μαθηταί (disciples), “Ἑωράκαμεν (We have seen) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord).” Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐὰν (If) μὴ (not) ἴδω (I see) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) χερσὶν (hands) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸν (the) τύπον (mark) τῶν (of the) ἥλων (nails), καὶ (and) βάλω (put) τὸν (the) δάκτυλόν (finger) μου (of me) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) τύπον* (mark) τῶν (of the) ἥλων (nails), καὶ (and) βάλω (put) μου (of me) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πλευρὰν (side) αὐτοῦ (of Him), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πιστεύσω (will I believe).” ²⁶ Καὶ (And) μεθ’ (after) ἡμέρας (days) ὀκτὼ (eight) πάλιν (again) ἦσαν (were) ἔσω (inside) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) Θωμᾶς (Thomas) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them). ἔρχεται (Comes) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), τῶν (the) θυρῶν (doors) κεκλεισμένων (having been shut). καὶ (And) ἔστη (He stood) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) μέσον (midst) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Εἰρήνη (Peace) ὑμῖν (to you).” ²⁷ εἶτα (Then) λέγει (He says) τῷ (-) Θωμᾷ (to Thomas), “Φέρε (Bring) τὸν (the) δάκτυλόν (finger) σου (of you) ὧδε (here), καὶ (and) ἴδε (see) τὰς (the) χεῖράς (hands) μου (of Me); καὶ (and) φέρε (bring) τὴν (the) χεῖρά (hand) σου (of you), καὶ (and) βάλε (put it) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πλευράν (side) μου (of Me); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) γίνου (be) ἄπιστος (unbelieving), ἀλλὰ (but) πιστός (believing).” ²⁸ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Θωμᾶς (Thomas) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ὁ (The) Κύριός (Lord) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Θεός (God) μου (of me)!” ²⁹ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὅτι (Because) ἑώρακάς (you have seen) με (Me), πεπίστευκας (you have believed); μακάριοι (blessed are) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) ἰδόντες (having seen), καὶ (yet) πιστεύσαντες (having believed).”

³ Τί (What) γάρ (for) εἰ (if) ἠπίστησάν (disbelieved) τινες (some)? μὴ (Not) ἡ (the) ἀπιστία (unbelief) αὐτῶν (of them), τὴν (the) πίστιν (faithfulness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καταργήσει (will nullify)?

¹⁸ οἵτινες (who) περὶ (concerning) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ἠστόχησαν (have gone astray), λέγοντες (asserting) [τὴν] (the) ἀνάστασιν (resurrection) ἤδη (already) γεγονέναι (to have taken place); καὶ (and) ἀνατρέπουσιν (they are overthrowing) τήν (the) τινων (of some) πίστιν (faith).

²⁵ Ἦν (It was) δὲ (then) ὥρα (the hour) τρίτη (third), καὶ (and) ἐσταύρωσαν (they crucified) αὐτόν (Him).

⁴⁴ Καὶ (And) ἦν (it was) ἤδη (now) ὡσεὶ (about) ὥρα (the hour) ἕκτη (sixth), καὶ (and) σκότος (darkness) ἐγένετο (came) ἐφ’ (over) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) γῆν (land) ἕως (until) ὥρας (the hour) ἐνάτης (ninth). ⁴⁵ τοῦ (The) ἡλίου (sun) ἐκλιπόντος (was darkened); ἐσχίσθη (was torn) δὲ (then) τὸ (the) καταπέτασμα (veil) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) μέσον (in the middle).

⁴⁶ περὶ (About) δὲ (then) τὴν (the) ἐνάτην (ninth) ὥραν (hour), ἀνεβόησεν (cried out) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), λέγων (saying), “Ἠλὶ* (Eli), ἠλὶ* (Eli), λεμὰ (lema) σαβαχθάνι* (sabachthani)?” τοῦτ’ (That) ἔστιν (is), “Θεέ (God) μου (of Me), θεέ (God) μου (of Me), ἵνα‿ (so that) τί (why) με (Me) ἐγκατέλιπες (have you forsaken)?”

⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) φωνήσας (having called out) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Πάτερ (Father), εἰς (into) χεῖράς (the hands) σου (of You) παρατίθεμαι (I commit) τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (Spirit) μου (of Me).” τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) εἰπὼν (having said), ἐξέπνευσεν (He breathed His last).

³ εἶδεν (He saw) ἐν (in) ὁράματι (a vision) φανερῶς (clearly), ὡσεὶ (as if) περὶ (about) ὥραν (hour) ἐνάτην (the ninth) τῆς (of the) ἡμέρας (day), ἄγγελον (an angel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσελθόντα (having come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) εἰπόντα (having said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Κορνήλιε (Cornelius)!”

⁷ Ὃς (He) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δεήσεις (prayers) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἱκετηρίας (supplications), πρὸς (to) τὸν (the One) δυνάμενον (being able) σῴζειν (to save) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (from) θανάτου (death), μετὰ (with) κραυγῆς (crying) ἰσχυρᾶς (loud) καὶ (and) δακρύων (tears) προσενέγκας (having offered up), καὶ (and) εἰσακουσθεὶς (having been heard), ἀπὸ (because of) τῆς (-) εὐλαβείας (reverence),

¹¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Ἠλίας (Elijah) μὲν (indeed) ἔρχεται (comes), καὶ (and) ἀποκαταστήσει (will restore) πάντα (all things). ¹² λέγω (I say) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἤδη (already) ἦλθεν (is come), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπέγνωσαν (they knew) αὐτὸν (him), ἀλλὰ* (but) ἐποίησαν (did) ἐν (to) αὐτῷ (him) ὅσα (whatever) ἠθέλησαν (they desired). οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) μέλλει (is about) πάσχειν (to suffer) ὑπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).” ¹³ τότε (Then) συνῆκαν (understood) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ὅτι (that) περὶ (concerning) Ἰωάννου (John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist) εἶπεν (He spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them).

⁴⁷ Τινὲς (Some) δὲ (then) τῶν (of those who) ἐκεῖ (there) ἑστηκότων (were standing), ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ἔλεγον (began saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἠλίαν (Elijah) φωνεῖ (calls) οὗτος (this man).” ⁴⁸ καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately), δραμὼν (having run) εἷς (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) καὶ (and) λαβὼν (having taken) σπόγγον (a sponge), πλήσας (having filled it) τε (and) ὄξους (with vinegar) καὶ (and) περιθεὶς (having put it on) καλάμῳ (a reed), ἐπότιζεν (gave to drink) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴⁹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) λοιποὶ (the rest) ἔλεγον* (were saying), “Ἄφες (Let be). ἴδωμεν (Let us see) εἰ (whether) ἔρχεται (comes) Ἠλίας (Elijah) σώσων (to save) αὐτόν (Him).”

¹¹ καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτων (they were asking) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying) Ὅτι (-), “Λέγουσιν (Say) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίαν (Elijah) δεῖ (it behooves) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρῶτον (first)?” ¹² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἠλίας (Elijah) μὲν (indeed) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρῶτον (first), ἀποκαθιστάνει (restores) πάντα (all things); καὶ (and) πῶς (how) γέγραπται (has it been written) ἐπὶ (of) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), ἵνα (that) πολλὰ (many things) πάθῃ (He should suffer) καὶ (and) ἐξουδενηθῇ (be set at naught)? ¹³ ἀλλὰ (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἐλήλυθεν (has come), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅσα (whatever) ἤθελον (they desired), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐπ’ (of) αὐτόν (him).”

²³ καὶ (And) ἐδίδουν (they were offering) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐσμυρνισμένον (having been mixed with myrrh), οἶνον (wine); ὃς (He) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) ἔλαβεν (did take it).

⁵⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πάλιν (again), κράξας (having cried) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), ἀφῆκεν (yielded up) τὸ (His) πνεῦμα (spirit).

³⁰ ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) τὸ (the) ὄξος (sour wine) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), εἶπεν (He said), “Τετέλεσται (It has been finished).” καὶ (And) κλίνας (having bowed) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head), παρέδωκεν (He yielded up) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit).

⁵¹ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), τὸ (the) καταπέτασμα (veil) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) ἐσχίσθη (was torn) ἀπ’ (from) ἄνωθεν (top) ἕως (to) κάτω (bottom), εἰς (into) δύο (two); καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) ἐσείσθη (was shaken), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πέτραι (rocks) ἐσχίσθησαν (were split), ⁵² καὶ (and) τὰ (the) μνημεῖα (tombs) ἀνεῴχθησαν (were opened), καὶ (and) πολλὰ (many) σώματα (bodies) τῶν (of the) κεκοιμημένων (having fallen asleep) ἁγίων (saints) ἠγέρθησαν (arose), ⁵³ καὶ (and) ἐξελθόντες (having gone forth) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) μνημείων (tombs) μετὰ (after) τὴν (the) ἔγερσιν (resurrection) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰσῆλθον (they entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἁγίαν (holy) πόλιν (city) καὶ (and) ἐνεφανίσθησαν (appeared) πολλοῖς (to many).

⁴⁵ τοῦ (The) ἡλίου (sun) ἐκλιπόντος (was darkened); ἐσχίσθη (was torn) δὲ (then) τὸ (the) καταπέτασμα (veil) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) μέσον (in the middle).

¹⁴ Ἔχοντες (Having) οὖν (therefore) ἀρχιερέα (a high priest) μέγαν (great), διεληλυθότα (having passed through) τοὺς (the) οὐρανούς (heavens), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κρατῶμεν (we should hold firmly) τῆς (to our) ὁμολογίας (confession). ¹⁵ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἔχομεν (have we) ἀρχιερέα (a high priest) μὴ (not) δυνάμενον (being able) συμπαθῆσαι (to sympathize) ταῖς (with the) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses) ἡμῶν (of us); πεπειρασμένον (one having been tempted) δὲ (however) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things) καθ’ (by) ὁμοιότητα (the same way), χωρὶς (without) ἁμαρτίας (sin). ¹⁶ προσερχώμεθα (We should come) οὖν (therefore) μετὰ (with) παρρησίας (boldness) τῷ (to the) θρόνῳ (throne) τῆς (-) χάριτος (of grace), ἵνα (so that) λάβωμεν (we may receive) ἔλεος (mercy) καὶ (and) χάριν (grace) εὕρωμεν (may find) εἰς (for) εὔκαιρον (in time of need) βοήθειαν (help).

¹⁹ Ἔχοντες (Having) οὖν (therefore), ἀδελφοί (brothers), παρρησίαν (confidence) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) εἴσοδον (entering) τῶν (the) ἁγίων (holy places) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), ²⁰ ἣν (which) ἐνεκαίνισεν (He dedicated) ἡμῖν (for us) ὁδὸν (a way) πρόσφατον (new), καὶ (and) ζῶσαν (living), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) καταπετάσματος (veil), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), τῆς (the) σαρκὸς (flesh) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ²¹ καὶ (and having) ἱερέα (a priest) μέγαν (great) ἐπὶ (over) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ²² προσερχώμεθα (we should draw near) μετὰ (with) ἀληθινῆς (a sincere) καρδίας (heart) ἐν (in) πληροφορίᾳ (full assurance) πίστεως (of faith), ῥεραντισμένοι (having been sprinkled clean) τὰς (our) καρδίας (hearts) ἀπὸ (from) συνειδήσεως (a conscience) πονηρᾶς (evil), καὶ (and) λελουσμένοι (having been washed) τὸ (our) σῶμα (body) ὕδατι (with water) καθαρῷ (pure). ²³ Κατέχωμεν (We should hold fast) τὴν (to the) ὁμολογίαν (confession) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), ἀκλινῆ (firmly); πιστὸς (faithful) γὰρ (for is) ὁ (the One) ἐπαγγειλάμενος (having promised).

⁵ Εἰσελθόντος (Having entered) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (He) εἰς (into) Καφαρναοὺμ (Capernaum), προσῆλθεν (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἑκατόνταρχος (a centurion), παρακαλῶν (imploring) αὐτὸν (Him), ⁶ καὶ (and) λέγων (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), ὁ (the) παῖς (servant) μου (of me) βέβληται (is lying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house), παραλυτικός (paralyzed), δεινῶς (grievously) βασανιζόμενος (tormented).” ⁷ ‹Καὶ› (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐγὼ (I) ἐλθὼν (having come), θεραπεύσω (will heal) αὐτόν (him).” ⁸ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (however), ὁ (the) ἑκατόνταρχος (centurion) ἔφη (said), “Κύριε (Lord), οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ἱκανὸς (worthy) ἵνα (that) μου (of me) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) στέγην (roof) εἰσέλθῃς (You should come); ἀλλὰ (but) μόνον (only) εἰπὲ (speak) λόγῳ (the word), καὶ (and) ἰαθήσεται (will be healed) ὁ (the) παῖς (servant) μου (of me). ⁹ καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) ἄνθρωπός (a man) εἰμι (am) ὑπὸ (under) ἐξουσίαν (authority), ἔχων (having) ὑπ’ (under) ἐμαυτὸν (me) στρατιώτας (soldiers); καὶ (and) λέγω (I say) τούτῳ (to this one), ‘Πορεύθητι (Go),’ καὶ (and) πορεύεται (he goes); καὶ (and) ἄλλῳ (to another), ‘Ἔρχου (Come),’ καὶ (and) ἔρχεται (he comes); καὶ (and) τῷ (to) δούλῳ (the servant) μου (of me), ‘Ποίησον (Do) τοῦτο (this),’ καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (he does it).” ¹⁰ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐθαύμασεν (marveled), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to those) ἀκολουθοῦσιν (following), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), παρ’ (except) οὐδενὶ (no one) τοσαύτην (so great) πίστιν (faith) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) εὗρον (have I found).

⁴³ πέποιθεν (He trusted) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ῥυσάσθω (Let Him deliver) νῦν (now) εἰ (if) θέλει (He wants) αὐτόν (Him). εἶπεν (He said) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-), ‘Θεοῦ (Of God) εἰμι (I am) Υἱός (the Son).’”

⁴⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐθαύμασεν (wondered) εἰ (if) ἤδη (already) τέθνηκεν (He were dead). καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) τὸν (the) κεντυρίωνα (centurion), ἐπηρώτησεν (he questioned) αὐτὸν (him) εἰ (whether) πάλαι (already) ἀπέθανεν (He had died). ⁴⁵ καὶ (And) γνοὺς (having known it) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) κεντυρίωνος (centurion), ἐδωρήσατο (He granted) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) τῷ (-) Ἰωσήφ (to Joseph).

² καὶ (and) γυναῖκές (women) τινες (certain) αἳ (who) ἦσαν (had been) τεθεραπευμέναι (cured) ἀπὸ (from) πνευμάτων (spirits) πονηρῶν (evil) καὶ (and) ἀσθενειῶν (infirmities): Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (who) καλουμένη (is called) Μαγδαληνή (Magdalene), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (whom) δαιμόνια (demons) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἐξεληλύθει (had gone out); ³ καὶ (and) Ἰωάννα (Joanna) γυνὴ (wife) Χουζᾶ (of Chuza), ἐπιτρόπου (a steward) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod), καὶ (and) Σουσάννα (Susanna), καὶ (and) ἕτεραι (others) πολλαί (many), αἵτινες (who) διηκόνουν (were ministering) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) ὑπαρχόντων (means) αὐταῖς (their own).

⁴⁹ εἱστήκεισαν (Stood) δὲ (now) πάντες (all) οἱ (those who) γνωστοὶ (knew) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar off), καὶ (also) γυναῖκες (women), αἱ (those) συνακολουθοῦσαι (having followed) αὐτῷ (Him) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee), ὁρῶσαι (beholding) ταῦτα (these things).

¹¹ Μαρία (Mary) δὲ (however) εἱστήκει (stood) πρὸς (at) τῷ (the) μνημείῳ (tomb) ἔξω (outside) κλαίουσα (weeping). ὡς (As) οὖν (therefore) ἔκλαιεν (she was weeping), παρέκυψεν (she stooped down) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb), ¹² καὶ (and) θεωρεῖ (she sees) δύο (two) ἀγγέλους (angels) ἐν (in) λευκοῖς (white) καθεζομένους (sitting), ἕνα (one) πρὸς (at) τῇ (the) κεφαλῇ (head) καὶ (and) ἕνα (one) πρὸς (at) τοῖς (the) ποσίν (feet), ὅπου (where) ἔκειτο (had lain) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). ¹³ Καὶ (And) λέγουσιν (say) αὐτῇ (to her) ἐκεῖνοι (they), “Γύναι (Woman), τί (why) κλαίεις (weep you)?” Λέγει (She says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὅτι (Because) Ἦραν (they have taken away) τὸν (the) Κύριόν (Lord) μου (of me), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I know) ποῦ (where) ἔθηκαν (they have laid) αὐτόν (Him).” ¹⁴ Ταῦτα (These things) εἰποῦσα (having said), ἐστράφη (she turned) εἰς (back) τὰ (-) ὀπίσω (around), καὶ (and) θεωρεῖ (she sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἑστῶτα (standing there), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ᾔδει (had known) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (it is). ¹⁵ λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Γύναι (Woman), τί (why) κλαίεις (do you weep)? τίνα (Whom) ζητεῖς (do you seek)?” Ἐκείνη (She), δοκοῦσα (thinking) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) κηπουρός (gardener) ἐστιν (He is), λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Sir), εἰ (if) σὺ (you) ἐβάστασας (have carried off) αὐτόν (him), εἰπέ (tell) μοι (me) ποῦ (where) ἔθηκας (you have laid) αὐτόν (Him), κἀγὼ (and I) αὐτὸν (him) ἀρῶ (will take away).” ¹⁶ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Μαριάμ (Mary).” Στραφεῖσα (Having turned around), ἐκείνη (she) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἑβραϊστί (in Hebrew), “Ραββουνι (Rabboni),” ὃ (that) λέγεται (is to say), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher).” ¹⁷ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Μή (Not) μου (Me) ἅπτου (touch), οὔπω (not yet) γὰρ (for) ἀναβέβηκα (have I ascended) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); πορεύου (go) δὲ (however) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) εἰπὲ (say) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ἀναβαίνω (I am ascending) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) Πατέρα (Father) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and to) Θεόν (God) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) Θεὸν (God) ὑμῶν (of you).’” ¹⁸ Ἔρχεται (Comes) Μαριὰμ (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνὴ (Magdalene) ἀγγέλλουσα (bringing word) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) ὅτι (-), “Ἑώρακα (I have seen) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord),” καὶ (and that) ταῦτα (these things) εἶπεν (He had said) αὐτῇ (to her).

⁵ μὴ (No) οὐκ (not) ἔχομεν (have we) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἀδελφὴν (a sister), γυναῖκα (a wife), περιάγειν (to take about), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (other) ἀπόστολοι (apostles), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), καὶ (and) Κηφᾶς (Cephas)?

⁵⁰ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἀνὴρ (a man) ὀνόματι (named) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph), βουλευτὴς (a Council member), ὑπάρχων (being) [καὶ] (also) ἀνὴρ (a man) ἀγαθὸς (good) καὶ (and) δίκαιος (righteous), ⁵¹ οὗτος (he) οὐκ (not) ἦν (was) συνκατατεθειμένος (having consented) τῇ (to the) βουλῇ (counsel) καὶ (and) τῇ (the) πράξει (deed) αὐτῶν (of them), ἀπὸ (from) Ἁριμαθαίας (Arimathea), πόλεως (a city) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ὃς (who) προσεδέχετο (was waiting for) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ⁵² οὗτος (He) προσελθὼν (having gone) τῷ (-) Πιλάτῳ (to Pilate), ᾐτήσατο (asked for) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). ⁵³ καὶ (And) καθελὼν (having taken it down), ἐνετύλιξεν (he wrapped) αὐτὸ (it) σινδόνι (in a linen cloth) καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (placed) αὐτὸν (it) ἐν (in) μνήματι (a tomb) λαξευτῷ (cut in a rock), οὗ (in which) οὐκ (no) ἦν (had been) οὐδεὶς (no one) οὔπω (not yet) κείμενος (laid). ⁵⁴ καὶ (And) ἡμέρα (the Day) ἦν (it was) Παρασκευῆς (of Preparation), καὶ (and) σάββατον (Sabbath) ἐπέφωσκεν (was just beginning). ⁵⁵ Κατακολουθήσασαι (Having followed) δὲ (then), αἱ (the) γυναῖκες (women) αἵτινες (who) ἦσαν (were) συνεληλυθυῖαι (come) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) αὐτῷ (with Him), ἐθεάσαντο (saw) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb) καὶ (and) ὡς (how) ἐτέθη (was laid) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ⁵⁶ ὑποστρέψασαι (Having returned) δὲ (then), ἡτοίμασαν (they prepared) ἀρώματα (spices) καὶ (and) μύρα (anointing oils). Καὶ (And) τὸ (on the) μὲν (indeed) σάββατον (Sabbath) ἡσύχασαν (they rested) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐντολήν (commandment).

³¹ Οἱ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews), ἐπεὶ (because) Παρασκευὴ (the Preparation) ἦν (it was), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (would remain) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath)— ἦν (was) γὰρ (for) μεγάλη (a high) ἡ (-) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνου (that) τοῦ (-) σαββάτου (Sabbath)— ἠρώτησαν (asked) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) ἵνα (that) κατεαγῶσιν (might be broken) αὐτῶν (their) τὰ (-) σκέλη (legs), καὶ (and) ἀρθῶσιν (they might be taken away).

³⁸ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) ταῦτα (these things), ἠρώτησεν (asked) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) [ὁ] (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ἁριμαθαίας (Arimathea), ὢν (being) μαθητὴς (a disciple) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus)— κεκρυμμένος (concealed) δὲ (however) διὰ (through) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)— ἵνα (that) ἄρῃ (he might take away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus); καὶ (and) ἐπέτρεψεν (gave permission) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate). ἦλθεν (He came) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) ἦρεν (took away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³⁹ ἦλθεν (Came) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus), ὁ (the one) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) νυκτὸς (by night) τὸ (at the) πρῶτον (first), φέρων (bearing) μίγμα (a mixture) σμύρνης (of myrrh) καὶ (and) ἀλόης (aloes), ὡς (about) λίτρας (litras) ἑκατόν (a hundred). ⁴⁰ ἔλαβον (They took) οὖν (therefore) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔδησαν (bound) αὐτὸ (it) ὀθονίοις (in linen cloths), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀρωμάτων (spices), καθὼς (as) ἔθος (the custom) ἐστὶν (is) τοῖς (among the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) ἐνταφιάζειν (to prepare for burial). ⁴¹ Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) τόπῳ (place) ὅπου (where) ἐσταυρώθη (He was crucified) κῆπος (a garden), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κήπῳ (garden) μνημεῖον (a tomb) καινόν (new), ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) οὐδέπω (not yet) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἦν (was) τεθειμένος (laid). ⁴² ἐκεῖ (There) οὖν (therefore), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) Παρασκευὴν (Preparation) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ὅτι (because) ἐγγὺς (near) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb), ἔθηκαν (they laid) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

³⁰ Πολλοὶ (Many) δὲ (however) ἔσονται (will be) πρῶτοι (first) ἔσχατοι (last), καὶ (and) ἔσχατοι (last) πρῶτοι (first).

¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) ἔσονται (will be) οἱ (the) ἔσχατοι (last) πρῶτοι (first), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (first), ἔσχατοι (last).”

²³ Καὶ (And) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Πῶς (How) δυσκόλως (difficultly) οἱ (those) τὰ (-) χρήματα (riches) ἔχοντες (having), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσελεύσονται (will enter)!” ²⁴ οἱ (-) δὲ (And) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) ἐθαμβοῦντο (were astonished) ἐπὶ (at) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), πάλιν (again) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τέκνα (Children), πῶς (how) δύσκολόν (difficult) ἐστιν (it is) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter)! ²⁵ εὐκοπώτερόν (Easier) ἐστιν (it is) κάμηλον (for a camel) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) τρυμαλιᾶς (eye) τῆς (of the) ῥαφίδος (needle) διελθεῖν (to pass), ἢ (than for) πλούσιον (a rich man) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter).” ²⁶ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) περισσῶς (exceedingly) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (they were astonished), λέγοντες (saying) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτούς (themselves), “Καὶ (Then) τίς (who) δύναται (is able) σωθῆναι (to be saved)?” ²⁷ Ἐμβλέψας (Having looked on) αὐτοῖς (them), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says), “Παρὰ (With) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἀδύνατον (it is impossible), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐ (not) παρὰ (with) θεῷ (God); πάντα (all things) γὰρ (for) δυνατὰ (are possible) παρὰ (with) τῷ (-) θεῷ (God).”

⁵⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar off) ἠκολούθησεν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him), ἕως (as far as) ἔσω (within) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) αὐλὴν (court) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest); καὶ (and) ἦν (he was) συνκαθήμενος (sitting) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὑπηρετῶν (officers) καὶ (and) θερμαινόμενος (warming himself) πρὸς (at) τὸ (the) φῶς (fire).

⁶⁶ Καὶ (And) ὄντος (being) τοῦ (-) Πέτρου (Peter) κάτω (below) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) αὐλῇ (courtyard), ἔρχεται (comes) μία (one) τῶν (of the) παιδισκῶν (servant girls) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest), ⁶⁷ καὶ (and) ἰδοῦσα (having seen) τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter) θερμαινόμενον (warming himself), ἐμβλέψασα (having looked at) αὐτῷ (him), λέγει (she says), “Καὶ (Also) σὺ (you) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) Ναζαρηνοῦ (Nazarene) ἦσθα (were), τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).” ⁶⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἠρνήσατο (he denied it), λέγων (saying), “Οὔτε (Neither) οἶδα (I know), οὔτε (nor even) ἐπίσταμαι (understand) σὺ (you) τί (what) λέγεις (say).” καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθεν (he went forth) ἔξω (out) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) προαύλιον (porch); ‹καὶ (and) ἀλέκτωρ (the rooster) ἐφώνησεν› (crowed). ⁶⁹ Καὶ (And) ἡ (the) παιδίσκη (servant girl), ἰδοῦσα (having seen) αὐτὸν (him), ἤρξατο (began) πάλιν (again) λέγειν (to say) τοῖς (to those) παρεστῶσιν (standing by) ὅτι (-), “Οὗτος (This) ἐξ (one of) αὐτῶν (them) ἐστιν (is).” ⁷⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) πάλιν (again) ἠρνεῖτο (he denied). Καὶ (And) μετὰ (after) μικρὸν (a little), πάλιν (again) οἱ (those) παρεστῶτες (standing by) ἔλεγον (were saying) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Ἀληθῶς (Truly) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) εἶ (you are), καὶ (also) γὰρ (for) Γαλιλαῖος (a Galilean) εἶ (you are).” ⁷¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἤρξατο (he began) ἀναθεματίζειν (to curse) καὶ (and) ὀμνύναι (to swear) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I know) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) τοῦτον (this), ὃν (whom) λέγετε (you speak of)!” ⁷² καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (the second time) ἀλέκτωρ (a rooster) ἐφώνησεν (crowed). Καὶ (And) ἀνεμνήσθη (remembered) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (word) ὡς (that) εἶπεν (had said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (-), “Πρὶν (Before) ἀλέκτορα (the rooster) δὶς (twice) φωνῆσαι (crows), τρίς (three times) με (Me) ἀπαρνήσῃ (you will deny).” καὶ (And) ἐπιβαλὼν (having broken down), ἔκλαιεν (he began to weep).

²⁵ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἦν (there was) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), ᾧ (whose) ὄνομα (name was) Συμεών (Simeon); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this) δίκαιος (was righteous) καὶ (and) εὐλαβής (devout), προσδεχόμενος (waiting for) παράκλησιν (the consolation) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), καὶ (and) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ἦν (was) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (him).

³⁸ καὶ (And) αὐτῇ (she) τῇ (at that) ὥρᾳ (hour) ἐπιστᾶσα (having come up), ἀνθωμολογεῖτο (was giving praise) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), καὶ (and) ἐλάλει (was speaking) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (those) προσδεχομένοις (waiting for) λύτρωσιν (the redemption) Ἰερουσαλήμ (of Jerusalem).

³⁸ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) ταῦτα (these things), ἠρώτησεν (asked) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) [ὁ] (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ἁριμαθαίας (Arimathea), ὢν (being) μαθητὴς (a disciple) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus)— κεκρυμμένος (concealed) δὲ (however) διὰ (through) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)— ἵνα (that) ἄρῃ (he might take away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus); καὶ (and) ἐπέτρεψεν (gave permission) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate). ἦλθεν (He came) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) ἦρεν (took away) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁸ Τότε (Then) Πέτρος (Peter), πλησθεὶς (having been filled) Πνεύματος (with the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἄρχοντες (Rulers) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) πρεσβύτεροι (elders), ⁹ εἰ (if) ἡμεῖς (we) σήμερον (this day) ἀνακρινόμεθα (are being examined) ἐπὶ (as to) εὐεργεσίᾳ (a good work) ἀνθρώπου (to the man) ἀσθενοῦς (ailing), ἐν (by) τίνι (what means) οὗτος (he) σέσωσται (has been healed), ¹⁰ γνωστὸν (known) ἔστω (let it be) πᾶσιν (to all) ὑμῖν (you) καὶ (and) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (of) Ναζωραίου (Nazareth), ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐσταυρώσατε (crucified), ὃν (whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἤγειρεν (raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ἐν (in) τούτῳ (Him) οὗτος (this man) παρέστηκεν (stands) ἐνώπιον (before) ὑμῶν (you) ὑγιής (sound). ¹¹ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ‘Ὁ (the) λίθος (stone) ὁ (-) ἐξουθενηθεὶς (having been rejected) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you), τῶν (the) οἰκοδόμων (builders), ὁ (which) γενόμενος (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (head) γωνίας (of the corner).’ ¹² Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἐν (in) ἄλλῳ (other) οὐδενὶ (no one) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation), οὐδὲ (not) γὰρ (for) ὄνομά (name) ἐστιν (is there) ἕτερον (another) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) τὸ (-) δεδομένον (having been given) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐν (by) ᾧ (which) δεῖ (it behooves) σωθῆναι (to be saved) ἡμᾶς (us).” ¹³ Θεωροῦντες (Seeing) δὲ (now) τὴν (the) τοῦ (-) Πέτρου (of Peter) παρρησίαν (boldness), καὶ (and) Ἰωάννου (of John), καὶ (and) καταλαβόμενοι (having understood) ὅτι (that) ἄνθρωποι (men) ἀγράμματοί (unschooled) εἰσιν (they are), καὶ (and) ἰδιῶται (ordinary), ἐθαύμαζον (they were astonished). ἐπεγίνωσκόν (They recognized) τε (then) αὐτοὺς (them), ὅτι (that) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἦσαν (they had been).

⁵⁰ Οἱ (The) δὲ (but) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) παρώτρυναν (incited) τὰς (the) σεβομένας (worshipping) γυναῖκας (women) τὰς (-) εὐσχήμονας (of honorable position), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) πρώτους (principals) τῆς (of the) πόλεως (city), καὶ (and) ἐπήγειραν (they stirred up) διωγμὸν (a persecution) ἐπὶ (against) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul) καὶ (and) Βαρνάβαν (Barnabas), καὶ (and) ἐξέβαλον (expelled) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ὁρίων (district) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹² πολλοὶ (Many) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἐπίστευσαν (believed), καὶ (and) τῶν (of the) Ἑλληνίδων (Grecian) γυναικῶν (women) τῶν (-) εὐσχημόνων (prominent) καὶ (and) ἀνδρῶν (men) οὐκ (not) ὀλίγοι (a few).

¹⁴ καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) πλείονας (most) τῶν (of the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers), ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) πεποιθότας (trusting) τοῖς (by the) δεσμοῖς (chains) μου (of me), περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) τολμᾶν (to dare) ἀφόβως (fearlessly) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) λαλεῖν (to speak).

³¹ Οἱ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews), ἐπεὶ (because) Παρασκευὴ (the Preparation) ἦν (it was), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (would remain) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath)— ἦν (was) γὰρ (for) μεγάλη (a high) ἡ (-) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνου (that) τοῦ (-) σαββάτου (Sabbath)— ἠρώτησαν (asked) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate) ἵνα (that) κατεαγῶσιν (might be broken) αὐτῶν (their) τὰ (-) σκέλη (legs), καὶ (and) ἀρθῶσιν (they might be taken away). ³² ἦλθον (Came) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) μὲν (indeed) πρώτου (first) κατέαξαν (broke) τὰ (the) σκέλη (legs), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) ἄλλου (other) τοῦ (-) συσταυρωθέντος (having been crucified with) αὐτῷ (Him); ³³ ἐπὶ (to) δὲ (however) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐλθόντες (having come), ὡς (when) εἶδον (they saw) ἤδη (already) αὐτὸν (Him) τεθνηκότα (having been dead), οὐ (not) κατέαξαν (they did break) αὐτοῦ (His) τὰ (-) σκέλη (legs). ³⁴ ἀλλ’ (But) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) στρατιωτῶν (soldiers) λόγχῃ (with a spear) αὐτοῦ (His) τὴν (-) πλευρὰν (side) ἔνυξεν (pierced), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (came out) εὐθὺς (immediately) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) ὕδωρ (water). ³⁵ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ἑωρακὼς (having seen) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has borne witness), καὶ (and) ἀληθινὴ (true) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony). καὶ (And) ἐκεῖνος (He) οἶδεν (knows) ὅτι (that) ἀληθῆ (truth) λέγει (he is speaking), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πιστεύητε (might believe). ³⁶ Ἐγένετο (Took place) γὰρ (for) ταῦτα (these things) ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled): “Ὀστοῦν (Bone) οὐ (not one) συντριβήσεται (will be broken) αὐτοῦ (of Him).” ³⁷ καὶ (And) πάλιν (again), ἑτέρα (another) γραφὴ (Scripture) λέγει (says): “Ὄψονται (They will look) εἰς (on) ὃν (the One) ἐξεκέντησαν (they have pierced).”

⁵⁸ οὗτος (He) προσελθὼν (having gone) τῷ (-) Πιλάτῳ (to Pilate), ᾐτήσατο (asked for) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐκέλευσεν (commanded it) ἀποδοθῆναι (to be given up).

³⁹ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) κεντυρίων (centurion) ὁ (-) παρεστηκὼς (standing) ἐξ (from) ἐναντίας (opposite of) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὅτι (that) οὕτως (thus) ἐξέπνευσεν (He breathed His last), εἶπεν (he said), “Ἀληθῶς (Truly) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) Υἱὸς (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἦν (was)!”

⁵⁹ καὶ (And) λαβὼν (having taken) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body), ὁ (-) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) ἐνετύλιξεν (wrapped) αὐτὸ (it) ἐν (in) σινδόνι (a linen cloth) καθαρᾷ (clean) ⁶⁰ καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (placed) αὐτὸ (it) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) καινῷ (new) αὐτοῦ (of him) μνημείῳ (tomb), ὃ (which) ἐλατόμησεν (he had cut) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πέτρᾳ (rock); καὶ (and) προσκυλίσας (having rolled) λίθον (a stone) μέγαν (great) τῇ (to the) θύρᾳ (door) τοῦ (of the) μνημείου (tomb), ἀπῆλθεν (he went away).

² Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), σεισμὸς (an earthquake) ἐγένετο (there was) μέγας (great); ἄγγελος (an angel) γὰρ (for) Κυρίου (of the Lord), καταβὰς (having descended) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), καὶ (and) προσελθὼν (having come), ἀπεκύλισεν (rolled away) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone) καὶ (and) ἐκάθητο (was sitting) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it).

³ καὶ (And) ἔλεγον (they were saying) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτάς (themselves), “Τίς (Who) ἀποκυλίσει (will roll away) ἡμῖν (for us) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) θύρας (door) τοῦ (of the) μνημείου (tomb)?” ⁴ καὶ (And) ἀναβλέψασαι (having looked up) θεωροῦσιν (they see) ὅτι (that) ἀποκεκύλισται* (has been rolled away) ὁ (the) λίθος (stone); ἦν (it was) γὰρ (for) μέγας (large) σφόδρα (extremely).

⁵³ καὶ (And) καθελὼν (having taken it down), ἐνετύλιξεν (he wrapped) αὐτὸ (it) σινδόνι (in a linen cloth) καὶ (and) ἔθηκεν (placed) αὐτὸν (it) ἐν (in) μνήματι (a tomb) λαξευτῷ (cut in a rock), οὗ (in which) οὐκ (no) ἦν (had been) οὐδεὶς (no one) οὔπω (not yet) κείμενος (laid).

³⁸ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again), ἐμβριμώμενος (being deeply moved) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself), ἔρχεται (comes) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) σπήλαιον (a cave), καὶ (and) λίθος (a stone) ἐπέκειτο (was lying) ἐπ’ (against) αὐτῷ (it).

⁴⁰ Ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) γυναῖκες (women) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar off) θεωροῦσαι (looking on), ἐν (among) αἷς (whom) καὶ (also) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνὴ (Magdalene), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the) Ἰακώβου (of James) τοῦ (the) μικροῦ (least) καὶ (and) Ἰωσῆτος (of Joseph) μήτηρ (mother), καὶ (and) Σαλώμη (Salome),

¹ Καὶ (And) διαγενομένου (having passed) τοῦ (the) σαββάτου (Sabbath), Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνὴ (Magdalene), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the mother) τοῦ (-) Ἰακώβου (of James), καὶ (and) Σαλώμη (Salome), ἠγόρασαν (bought) ἀρώματα (spices), ἵνα (that) ἐλθοῦσαι (having come), ἀλείψωσιν (they might anoint) αὐτόν (Him).

⁵⁵ Κατακολουθήσασαι (Having followed) δὲ (then), αἱ (the) γυναῖκες (women) αἵτινες (who) ἦσαν (were) συνεληλυθυῖαι (come) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) αὐτῷ (with Him), ἐθεάσαντο (saw) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb) καὶ (and) ὡς (how) ἐτέθη (was laid) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him).
