¹ Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ² λέγων (saying), “Ἐπὶ (On) τῆς (-) Μωϋσέως (Moses’) καθέδρας (seat) ἐκάθισαν (have sat down) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees). ³ πάντα (All things) οὖν (therefore), ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) εἴπωσιν (they might tell) ὑμῖν (you), ποιήσατε (keep) καὶ (and) τηρεῖτε (observe). κατὰ (After) δὲ (however) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτῶν (of them), μὴ (not) ποιεῖτε (do). λέγουσιν (They speak) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) ποιοῦσιν (act). ⁴ δεσμεύουσιν (They tie up) δὲ (-) φορτία (burdens) βαρέα (heavy) [καὶ (and) δυσβάστακτα] (hard to bear) καὶ (and) ἐπιτιθέασιν (lay them) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) ὤμους (shoulders) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men); αὐτοὶ (themselves) δὲ (however), τῷ (with) δακτύλῳ (finger) αὐτῶν (of them), οὐ (not) θέλουσιν (are they willing) κινῆσαι (to move) αὐτά (them). ⁵ Πάντα (All) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them), ποιοῦσιν (they do) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) θεαθῆναι (to be seen) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (by men). πλατύνουσιν (They broaden) γὰρ (for) τὰ (the) φυλακτήρια (phylacteries) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) μεγαλύνουσιν (enlarge) τὰ (their) κράσπεδα (tassels). ⁶ φιλοῦσιν (They love) δὲ (now) τὴν (the) πρωτοκλισίαν (chief place) ἐν (at) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (banquets), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), ⁷ καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), καὶ (and) καλεῖσθαι (to be called) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi).’ ⁸ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) κληθῆτε (shall be called) ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi);’ εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (Teacher), πάντες (all) δὲ (now) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀδελφοί (brothers) ἐστε (are). ⁹ καὶ (And) πατέρα (father) μὴ (no one) καλέσητε (call) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth); εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ὁ (who is) οὐράνιος (in heaven). ¹⁰ μηδὲ (Neither) κληθῆτε (be called) καθηγηταί (instructors), ὅτι (since) καθηγητὴς (the instructor) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐστιν (is) εἷς (One), ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ). ¹¹ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) μείζων (the greatest) ὑμῶν (among you) ἔσται (will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant). ¹² Ὅστις (He who) δὲ (then) ὑψώσει (shall exalt) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled), καὶ (and) ὅστις (whoever) ταπεινώσει (shall humble) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted). ¹³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) κλείετε (you shut up) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (neither) εἰσέρχεσθε (enter), οὐδὲ (nor even) τοὺς (those who) εἰσερχομένους (are entering) ἀφίετε (do you allow) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in). ^{14 15} Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) περιάγετε (you traverse) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ξηρὰν (dry land) ποιῆσαι (to make) ἕνα (one) προσήλυτον (convert), καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) γένηται (he has become so), ποιεῖτε (you make) αὐτὸν (him) υἱὸν (a son) γεέννης (of hell) διπλότερον (twofold more) ὑμῶν (than yourselves). ¹⁶ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁδηγοὶ (guides) τυφλοὶ (blind), οἱ (those) λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple), οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (it is); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) χρυσῷ (gold) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) ὀφείλει (is bound by his oath).’ ¹⁷ μωροὶ (Foolish) καὶ (and) τυφλοί (blind)! τίς (Which) γὰρ (for) μείζων (greater) ἐστίν (is), ὁ (the) χρυσὸς (gold), ἢ (or) ὁ (the) ναὸς (temple) ὁ (-) ἁγιάσας (having sanctified) τὸν (the) χρυσόν (gold)? ¹⁸ καί (And you say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar), οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (it is); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) δώρῳ (gift) τῷ (that is) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it), ὀφείλει (he is bound by his oath).’ ¹⁹ τυφλοί (You blind men)! τί (Which) γὰρ (for) μεῖζον (is greater), τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift), ἢ (or) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar) τὸ (-) ἁγιάζον (sanctifying) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift)? ²⁰ ὁ (The one) οὖν (therefore) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) αὐτῷ (it) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) πᾶσι (all things) τοῖς (that are) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it). ²¹ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) αὐτῷ (it) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the One) κατοικοῦντι (dwelling) αὐτόν (in it). ²² καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θρόνῳ (throne) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the One) καθημένῳ (sitting) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it). ²³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) ἀποδεκατοῦτε (you pay tithes of) τὸ (-) ἡδύοσμον (mint), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἄνηθον (dill), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) κύμινον (cumin); καὶ (and) ἀφήκατε (you have neglected) τὰ (the) βαρύτερα (weightier matters) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law): τὴν (-) κρίσιν (justice) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἔλεος (mercy) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faithfulness). ταῦτα (These) δὲ (now) ἔδει (it behooved you) ποιῆσαι (to do), κἀκεῖνα (those) μὴ (not) ἀφιέναι* (to be leaving aside). ²⁴ ὁδηγοὶ (Guides) τυφλοί (blind)! οἱ (Those) διϋλίζοντες (straining out) τὸν (the) κώνωπα (gnat), τὴν (the) δὲ (however) κάμηλον (camel) καταπίνοντες (swallowing)! ²⁵ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) καθαρίζετε (you cleanse) τὸ (the) ἔξωθεν (outside) τοῦ (of the) ποτηρίου (cup) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) παροψίδος (dish); ἔσωθεν (inside), δὲ (however), γέμουσιν (they are full) ἐξ (of) ἁρπαγῆς (greed) καὶ (and) ἀκρασίας (self-indulgence). ²⁶ Φαρισαῖε (Pharisee) τυφλέ (blind)! καθάρισον (Cleanse) πρῶτον (first) τὸ (the) ἐντὸς (inside) τοῦ (of the) ποτηρίου (cup) ‹καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) παροψίδος› (dish) ἵνα (that) γένηται (might become) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) ἐκτὸς (outside) αὐτοῦ (of them) καθαρόν (clean). ²⁷ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) παρομοιάζετε (you are like) τάφοις (tombs) κεκονιαμένοις (having been whitewashed), οἵτινες (which) ἔξωθεν (outwardly) μὲν (indeed) φαίνονται (appear) ὡραῖοι (beautiful). ἔσωθεν (Inside) δὲ (however) γέμουσιν (they are full) ὀστέων (of bones) νεκρῶν (of the dead), καὶ (and) πάσης (of all) ἀκαθαρσίας (impurity). ²⁸ οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὑμεῖς (you) ἔξωθεν (outwardly) μὲν (indeed) φαίνεσθε (appear) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men) δίκαιοι (righteous), ἔσωθεν (inwardly) δέ (however) ἐστε (you are) μεστοὶ (full) ὑποκρίσεως (of hypocrisy) καὶ (and) ἀνομίας (lawlessness). ²⁹ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) οἰκοδομεῖτε (you build) τοὺς (the) τάφους (tombs) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) καὶ (and) κοσμεῖτε (adorn) τὰ (the) μνημεῖα (monuments) τῶν (of the) δικαίων (righteous); ³⁰ καὶ (and) λέγετε (you say), ‘Εἰ (If) ἤμεθα (we had lived) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἤμεθα (we would have been) αὐτῶν (with them) κοινωνοὶ (partakers) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets).’ ³¹ ὥστε (Thus) μαρτυρεῖτε (you bear witness) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves) ὅτι (that) υἱοί (sons) ἐστε (you are) τῶν (of those) φονευσάντων (having murdered) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets). ³² καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you), πληρώσατε (fill up) τὸ (the) μέτρον (measure) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you). ³³ ὄφεις (Serpents)! γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers)! πῶς (How) φύγητε (shall you escape) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) κρίσεως (sentence) τῆς (-) γεέννης (of hell)? ³⁴ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) σοφοὺς (wise men) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes). ἐξ (Some of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποκτενεῖτε (you will kill) καὶ (and) σταυρώσετε (will crucify), καὶ (and some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) μαστιγώσετε (you will flog) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) διώξετε (will persecute) ἀπὸ (from) πόλεως (town) εἰς (to) πόλιν (town); ³⁵ ὅπως (so that) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) πᾶν (all the) αἷμα (blood) δίκαιον (righteous) ἐκχυννόμενον (being poured out) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ἅβελ (of Abel) τοῦ (the) δικαίου (righteous), ἕως (to) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah) υἱοῦ (son) Βαραχίου (of Berekiah), ὃν (whom) ἐφονεύσατε (you murdered) μεταξὺ (between) τοῦ (the) ναοῦ (temple) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar). ³⁶ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἥξει (will come) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γενεὰν (generation) ταύτην (this). ³⁷ Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἡ (-) ἀποκτείνουσα (killing) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) λιθοβολοῦσα (stoning) τοὺς (those) ἀπεσταλμένους (having been sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτήν (her)! ποσάκις (How often) ἠθέλησα (would I) ἐπισυναγαγεῖν (have gathered together) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you), ὃν (in which) τρόπον (way) ὄρνις (a hen) ἐπισυνάγει (gathers together) τὰ (the) νοσσία (chicks) αὐτῆς (of her) ὑπὸ (under) τὰς (the) πτέρυγας (wings), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠθελήσατε (you were willing)! ³⁸ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀφίεται (is left) ὑμῖν (to you) ὁ (the) οἶκος (house) ὑμῶν (of you) ‹ἔρημος› (desolate)! ³⁹ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μή (not) με (Me) ἴδητε (shall you see) ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) εἴπητε (you say), ‘Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).’”

¹⁰ Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to Him) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀκούετε (Hear) καὶ (and) συνίετε (understand)! ¹¹ οὐ (Not) τὸ (what) εἰσερχόμενον (is entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man); ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (that) ἐκπορευόμενον (going forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth), τοῦτο (this) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).” ¹² Τότε (Then) προσελθόντες (having come near), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) λέγουσιν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οἶδας (Know You) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (saying), ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν (were offended)?” ¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Πᾶσα (Every) φυτεία (plant) ἣν (that) οὐκ (not) ἐφύτευσεν (has planted) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly), ἐκριζωθήσεται (it will be rooted up). ¹⁴ ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)! τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of the blind). τυφλὸς (Blind) δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (they lead), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).” ¹⁵ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Φράσον (Explain) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) παραβολήν (parable) ‹ταύτην› (this).” ¹⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἀκμὴν (Still) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀσύνετοί (without understanding) ἐστε (are)? ¹⁷ οὐ (Not yet) νοεῖτε (understand you) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (everything) τὸ (-) εἰσπορευόμενον (entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (stomach) χωρεῖ (goes), καὶ (and) εἰς (into) ἀφεδρῶνα (the sewer) ἐκβάλλεται (is cast out)? ¹⁸ τὰ (The things) δὲ (however) ἐκπορευόμενα (going forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth), ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχεται (come forth), κἀκεῖνα (and these) κοινοῖ (defile) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man). ¹⁹ ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχονται (come forth) διαλογισμοὶ (thoughts) πονηροί (evil), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), ψευδομαρτυρίαι (false testimonies), βλασφημίαι (slanders). ²⁰ ταῦτά (These) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the things) κοινοῦντα (defiling) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man); τὸ (-) δὲ (but) ἀνίπτοις (with unwashed) χερσὶν (hands) φαγεῖν (to eat), οὐ (not) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).”

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to Him) πάλιν (again) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀκούσατέ (Listen to) μου (Me), πάντες (all), καὶ (and) σύνετε (understand):

³⁸ Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἔλεγεν (He was saying), “Βλέπετε (Beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), τῶν (-) θελόντων (desiring) ἐν (in) στολαῖς (robes) περιπατεῖν (to walk about), καὶ (and) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), ³⁹ καὶ (and) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), καὶ (and) πρωτοκλισίας (first places) ἐν (at) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (feasts);

¹ Ἐν (In) οἷς (these times), ἐπισυναχθεισῶν (having been gathered together) τῶν (the) μυριάδων (myriads) τοῦ (of the) ὄχλου (crowd) ὥστε (so as) καταπατεῖν (to trample upon) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἤρξατο (He began) λέγειν (to say) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πρῶτον (first), “Προσέχετε (Take heed) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) ὑπόκρισις (hypocrisy), τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees).

⁵⁷ Τί (Why) δὲ (now) καὶ (even) ἀφ’ (for) ἑαυτῶν (yourselves) οὐ (not) κρίνετε (judge you) τὸ (what is) δίκαιον (right)?

⁴⁵ Ἀκούοντος (Were listening) δὲ (now) παντὸς (all) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people), εἶπεν (He said) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) [αὐτοῦ] (of Him), ⁴⁶ “Προσέχετε (Beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), τῶν (-) θελόντων (desiring) περιπατεῖν (to walk) ἐν (in) στολαῖς (long robes), καὶ (and) φιλούντων (loving) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), καὶ (and) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), καὶ (and) πρωτοκλισίας (first places) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (banquets);

⁴⁶ “Προσέχετε (Beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), τῶν (-) θελόντων (desiring) περιπατεῖν (to walk) ἐν (in) στολαῖς (long robes), καὶ (and) φιλούντων (loving) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), καὶ (and) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), καὶ (and) πρωτοκλισίας (first places) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (banquets);

² “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) παραβαίνουσιν (break) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders)? οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) νίπτονται (they wash) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ‹αὐτῶν› (of them) ὅταν (when) ἄρτον (bread) ἐσθίωσιν (they shall eat).” ³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) παραβαίνετε (break) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)? ⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (commanded), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother)’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ⁵ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), “Δῶρον (It is a gift), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),” ⁶ οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) 〈ἢ (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ〉 (of himself).’ καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)! ⁷ ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah), λέγων (saying), ⁸ ‘Ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) οὗτος (this), τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (it honors); Ἡ (the) δὲ (however) καρδία (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me); ⁹ Μάτην (in vain) δὲ (then) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me), Διδάσκοντες (teaching as) διδασκαλίας (doctrines) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).’”

³⁰ Προσελθὼν (Having come) δὲ (then) τῷ (to the) δευτέρῳ (second), εἶπεν (he said) ὡσαύτως (likewise). Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἐγώ* (I will) κύριε* (sir),’ καὶ* (and) οὐκ* (not) ἀπῆλθεν (did he go).

²⁹ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (however), Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀπόστολοι (apostles) εἶπαν (said), “Πειθαρχεῖν (To obey) δεῖ (it is necessary) Θεῷ (God), μᾶλλον (rather) ἢ (than) ἀνθρώποις (men).

¹⁹ πέποιθάς (are persuaded that) τε (then) σεαυτὸν (you yourself) ὁδηγὸν (a guide) εἶναι (are), τυφλῶν (of the blind), φῶς (a light) τῶν (to those) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness), ²⁰ παιδευτὴν (an instructor) ἀφρόνων (of the foolish), διδάσκαλον (a teacher) νηπίων (of infants), ἔχοντα (having) τὴν (the) μόρφωσιν (embodiment) τῆς (-) γνώσεως (of knowledge) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law)— ²¹ ὁ (you) οὖν (then) διδάσκων (teaching) ἕτερον (another), σεαυτὸν (yourself) οὐ (not) διδάσκεις (do you teach)? ὁ (You) κηρύσσων (preaching) μὴ (not) κλέπτειν (to steal), κλέπτεις (do you steal)? ²² ὁ (You) λέγων (saying) μὴ (not) μοιχεύειν (to commit adultery), μοιχεύεις (do you commit adultery)? ὁ (You) βδελυσσόμενος (abhorring) τὰ (-) εἴδωλα (idols), ἱεροσυλεῖς (do you rob temples)? ²³ ὃς (You who) ἐν (in) νόμῳ (law) καυχᾶσαι (boast), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) παραβάσεως (transgression) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἀτιμάζεις (dishonor you)? ²⁴ τὸ (-) γὰρ (For), “Ὄνομα (The name) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δι’ (through) ὑμᾶς (you) βλασφημεῖται (is blasphemed) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles),” καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written).

¹ Πᾶσα (Every) ψυχὴ (soul) ἐξουσίαις (to the authorities) ὑπερεχούσαις (being above him) ὑποτασσέσθω (let be subject). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἔστιν (there is) ἐξουσία (authority), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God); αἱ (those) δὲ (however) οὖσαι (existing), ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God) τεταγμέναι (having been instituted) εἰσίν (are).

⁵ ἔχοντες (having) μόρφωσιν (a form) εὐσεβείας (of godliness) τὴν (-) δὲ (but) δύναμιν (the power) αὐτῆς (of it) ἠρνημένοι (denying). καὶ (And) τούτους (these) ἀποτρέπου (turn away from).

¹⁶ Θεὸν (God) ὁμολογοῦσιν (they profess) εἰδέναι (to know); τοῖς (in) δὲ (however) ἔργοις (works), ἀρνοῦνται (they deny Him), βδελυκτοὶ (detestable) ὄντες (being) καὶ (and) ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), καὶ (and) πρὸς (for) πᾶν (any) ἔργον (work) ἀγαθὸν (good), ἀδόκιμοι (unfit).

²⁸ Δεῦτε (Come) πρός (to) με (Me), πάντες (all) οἱ (those) κοπιῶντες (toiling) καὶ (and) πεφορτισμένοι (being burdened), κἀγὼ (and I) ἀναπαύσω (will give rest) ὑμᾶς (to you). ²⁹ ἄρατε (Take) τὸν (the) ζυγόν (yoke) μου (of Me) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) μάθετε (learn) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ὅτι (for) πραΰς (gentle) εἰμι (I am) καὶ (and) ταπεινὸς (humble) τῇ (in the) καρδίᾳ (heart), καὶ (and) εὑρήσετε (you will find) ἀνάπαυσιν (rest) ταῖς (for the) ψυχαῖς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you). ³⁰ ὁ (The) γὰρ (for) ζυγός (yoke) μου (of Me) χρηστὸς (is easy), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) φορτίον (burden) μου (of Me) ἐλαφρόν (light) ἐστιν (is).”

²³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) ἀποδεκατοῦτε (you pay tithes of) τὸ (-) ἡδύοσμον (mint), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἄνηθον (dill), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) κύμινον (cumin); καὶ (and) ἀφήκατε (you have neglected) τὰ (the) βαρύτερα (weightier matters) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law): τὴν (-) κρίσιν (justice) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἔλεος (mercy) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faithfulness). ταῦτα (These) δὲ (now) ἔδει (it behooved you) ποιῆσαι (to do), κἀκεῖνα (those) μὴ (not) ἀφιέναι* (to be leaving aside).

⁴⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Καὶ (Also) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (the) νομικοῖς (lawyers), οὐαί (woe)! ὅτι (For) φορτίζετε (you burden) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) φορτία (with burdens) δυσβάστακτα (heavy to bear), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (yourselves) ἑνὶ (with one) τῶν (of the) δακτύλων (fingers) ὑμῶν (of you), οὐ (not) προσψαύετε (do touch) τοῖς (the) φορτίοις (burdens).

¹⁰ Νῦν (Now) οὖν (therefore), τί (why) πειράζετε (are you testing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ἐπιθεῖναι (to put) ζυγὸν (a yoke) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples) ὃν (that) οὔτε (neither) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), οὔτε (nor) ἡμεῖς (we), ἰσχύσαμεν (have been able) βαστάσαι (to bear)?

²⁸ Ἔδοξεν (It seemed good) γὰρ (for) τῷ (to the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τῷ (-) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) καὶ (and) ἡμῖν (to us), μηδὲν (no) πλέον (further) ἐπιτίθεσθαι (to lay) ὑμῖν (upon you) βάρος (burden), πλὴν (except) τούτων (these) τῶν (-) ἐπάναγκες (necessary things):

¹³ οὐδὲ (Not even) γὰρ (for) οἱ (those) περιτεμνόμενοι (being circumcised) αὐτοὶ (themselves) νόμον (the Law) φυλάσσουσιν (keep), ἀλλὰ (but) θέλουσιν (they desire) ὑμᾶς (you) περιτέμνεσθαι (to be circumcised), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ὑμετέρᾳ (your) σαρκὶ (flesh) καυχήσωνται (they may boast).

²⁴ Ὑμῖν (To you) δὲ (however) λέγω (I say), τοῖς (to the) λοιποῖς (rest) τοῖς (of those) ἐν (in) Θυατείροις (Thyatira), ὅσοι (as many as) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (have) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) ταύτην (this), οἵτινες (who) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (have known) τὰ (the) βαθέα (depths) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan), ὡς (as) λέγουσιν (they say): οὐ (Not) βάλλω (I will cast) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἄλλο (any other) βάρος (burden).

¹ Προσέχετε (Beware) δὲ (now) τὴν (the) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) ὑμῶν (of you) μὴ (not) ποιεῖν (to do) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) θεαθῆναι (to be seen) αὐτοῖς (by them); εἰ (if) δὲ (now) μή¦γε (otherwise), μισθὸν (reward) οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (have you) παρὰ (with) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τῷ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens). ² Ὅταν (When) οὖν (therefore) ποιῇς (you do) ἐλεημοσύνην (acts of charity), μὴ (not) σαλπίσῃς (do sound a trumpet) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (you), ὥσπερ (as) οἱ (the) ὑποκριταὶ (hypocrites) ποιοῦσιν (do) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ῥύμαις (streets), ὅπως (so that) δοξασθῶσιν (they may have glory) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men). ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπέχουσιν (they have) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) αὐτῶν (of them). ³ σοῦ (You) δὲ (however) ποιοῦντος (doing) ἐλεημοσύνην (charity), μὴ (not) γνώτω (let know) ἡ (the) ἀριστερά (left hand) σου (of you) τί (what) ποιεῖ (is doing) ἡ (the) δεξιά (right hand) σου (of you), ⁴ ὅπως (so that) ᾖ (may be) σου (your) ἡ (-) ἐλεημοσύνη (giving) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρυπτῷ (secret). καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) σου (of you), ὁ (the One) βλέπων (seeing) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρυπτῷ (secret), ἀποδώσει (will reward) σοι (you). ⁵ Καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) προσεύχησθε (you pray), οὐκ (not) ἔσεσθε (you shall be) ὡς (like) οἱ (the) ὑποκριταί (hypocrites), ὅτι (for) φιλοῦσιν (they love) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) καὶ (and) ἐν (on) ταῖς (the) γωνίαις (corners) τῶν (of the) πλατειῶν (streets) ἑστῶτες (standing) προσεύχεσθαι (to pray), ὅπως (so that) φανῶσιν (they might be seen) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (by men). ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπέχουσιν (they have) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) αὐτῶν (of them). ⁶ σὺ (You) δὲ (however), ὅταν (when) προσεύχῃ (you pray), εἴσελθε (enter) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ταμεῖόν (room) σου (of you), καὶ (and) κλείσας (having shut) τὴν (the) θύραν (door) σου (of you), πρόσευξαι (pray) τῷ (to) Πατρί (Father) σου (of you), τῷ (the One) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρυπτῷ (secret). καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) σου (of you), ὁ (the One) βλέπων (seeing) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρυπτῷ (secret), ἀποδώσει (will reward) σοι (you). ⁷ Προσευχόμενοι (Praying) δὲ (now) μὴ (not) βατταλογήσητε (do use vain repetitions), ὥσπερ (like) οἱ (the) ἐθνικοί (pagans), δοκοῦσιν (they think) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πολυλογίᾳ (many words) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰσακουσθήσονται (they will be heard). ⁸ μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) ὁμοιωθῆτε (be like) αὐτοῖς (to them), οἶδεν (knows) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὧν (of what things) χρείαν (need) ἔχετε (you have), πρὸ (before) τοῦ (-) ὑμᾶς (your) αἰτῆσαι (asking) αὐτόν (Him). ⁹ Οὕτως (Thus) οὖν (therefore) προσεύχεσθε (pray) ὑμεῖς (you): ‘Πάτερ (Father) ἡμῶν (of us), ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens), Ἁγιασθήτω (hallowed be) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) σου (of You). ¹⁰ Ἐλθέτω* (Come) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) σου (of You); Γενηθήτω (be done) τὸ (the) θέλημά (will) σου (of You), Ὡς (as) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven), καὶ (so also) ἐπὶ (upon) γῆς (earth). ¹¹ Τὸν (The) ἄρτον (bread) ἡμῶν (of us) τὸν (-) ἐπιούσιον (daily) δὸς (grant) ἡμῖν (us) σήμερον (today). ¹² Καὶ (And) ἄφες (forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰ (the) ὀφειλήματα (debts) ἡμῶν (of us), Ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφήκαμεν (forgive) τοῖς (the) ὀφειλέταις (debtors) ἡμῶν (of us); ¹³ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) εἰσενέγκῃς (lead) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation), Ἀλλὰ (but) ῥῦσαι (deliver) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil).’ ¹⁴ Ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (men) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) αὐτῶν (of them), ἀφήσει (will forgive) καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (you) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly). ¹⁵ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (men) (τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (the trespasses) αὐτῶν) (of them), οὐδὲ (neither) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀφήσει (will forgive) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) ὑμῶν (of you). ¹⁶ Ὅταν (Whenever) δὲ (now) νηστεύητε (you fast), μὴ (not) γίνεσθε (be) ὡς (like) οἱ (the) ὑποκριταὶ (hypocrites), σκυθρωποί (gloomy); ἀφανίζουσιν (they disfigure) γὰρ (for) τὰ (the) πρόσωπα (appearance) αὐτῶν (of them), ὅπως (so that) φανῶσιν (they might appear) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men) νηστεύοντες (as fasting). ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπέχουσιν (they have) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) αὐτῶν (of them).

²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), γυνὴ (a woman) αἱμορροοῦσα (having had a flux of blood) δώδεκα (twelve) ἔτη (years), προσελθοῦσα (having come up) ὄπισθεν (behind Him), ἥψατο (touched) τοῦ (the) κρασπέδου (fringe) τοῦ (of the) ἱματίου (garment) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐστε (are) οἱ (those) δικαιοῦντες (justifying) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ὁ (-) δὲ (but) Θεὸς (God) γινώσκει (knows) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you); ὅτι (for) τὸ (that which) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) ὑψηλὸν (is exalted) βδέλυγμα (is an abomination) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

⁴⁷ οἳ (who) κατεσθίουσιν (devour) τὰς (the) οἰκίας (houses) τῶν (of) χηρῶν (widows), καὶ (and) προφάσει (as a pretext) μακρὰ (at great length) προσεύχονται (pray). οὗτοι (These) λήμψονται (will receive) περισσότερον (more abundant) κρίμα (condemnation).”

⁴⁴ πῶς (How) δύνασθε (are able) ὑμεῖς (you) πιστεῦσαι (to believe), δόξαν (glory) παρὰ (from) ἀλλήλων (one another) λαμβάνοντες (receiving), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τὴν (that is) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) μόνου (only) Θεοῦ (God), οὐ (not) ζητεῖτε (you seek)?

¹⁸ ὁ (The one) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτοῦ (himself) λαλῶν (speaking), τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τὴν (the) ἰδίαν (own) ζητεῖ (seeks); ὁ (the One) δὲ (however) ζητῶν (seeking) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντος (having sent) αὐτὸν (Him), οὗτος (He) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) ἀδικία (unrighteousness) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is).

⁴³ ἠγάπησαν (they loved) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) μᾶλλον (more) ἤπερ (than) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁵ Τινὲς (Some) μὲν (indeed) καὶ (even) διὰ (from) φθόνον (envy) καὶ (and) ἔριν (strife), τινὲς (some) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) δι’ (from) εὐδοκίαν (goodwill) τὸν (-) Χριστὸν (Christ) κηρύσσουσιν (are proclaiming) —

³ μηδὲν (nothing) κατ’ (according to) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) μηδὲ (or) κατὰ (according to) κενοδοξίαν (vain conceit), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (in humility) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἡγούμενοι (be esteeming) ὑπερέχοντας (surpassing) ἑαυτῶν (themselves), ⁴ ὁ (the one) ἀντικείμενος (opposing) καὶ (and) ὑπεραιρόμενος (exalting himself) ἐπὶ (above) πάντα (every) λεγόμενον (so-called) Θεὸν (god) ἢ (or) σέβασμα (object of worship), ὥστε (so as for) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καθίσαι (to sit down), ἀποδεικνύντα (setting forth) ἑαυτὸν (he himself) ὅτι (that) ἔστιν (is) Θεός (God).

²¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Τί (What) θέλεις (do you desire)?” Λέγει (She says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Εἰπὲ (Say) ἵνα (that) καθίσωσιν (might sit) οὗτοι (these) οἱ (-) δύο (two) υἱοί (sons) μου (of mine), εἷς (one) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) ‹σου› (of You) καὶ (and) εἷς (one) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left hand) σου (of You), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) σου (of You).”

⁴³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (-) Φαρισαίοις (Pharisees), ὅτι (for) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love) τὴν (the) πρωτοκαθεδρίαν (first seat) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces). ⁴⁴ οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (for) ἐστὲ (you are) ὡς (like) τὰ (-) μνημεῖα (graves) τὰ (-) ἄδηλα (unmarked), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄνθρωποι (men) οἱ (-) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐπάνω (above) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (have known it).” ⁴⁵ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δέ (now), τις (one) τῶν (of the) νομικῶν (lawyers) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ταῦτα (these things) λέγων (saying), καὶ (also) ἡμᾶς (us) ὑβρίζεις (You insult).” ⁴⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Καὶ (Also) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (the) νομικοῖς (lawyers), οὐαί (woe)! ὅτι (For) φορτίζετε (you burden) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) φορτία (with burdens) δυσβάστακτα (heavy to bear), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (yourselves) ἑνὶ (with one) τῶν (of the) δακτύλων (fingers) ὑμῶν (of you), οὐ (not) προσψαύετε (do touch) τοῖς (the) φορτίοις (burdens). ⁴⁷ οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (for) οἰκοδομεῖτε (you build) τὰ (the) μνημεῖα (tombs) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets), οἱ (-) δὲ (yet) πατέρες (the fathers) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀπέκτειναν (killed) αὐτούς (them). ⁴⁸ ἄρα (So) μάρτυρές (witnesses) ἐστε (you are), καὶ (and) συνευδοκεῖτε (consent) τοῖς (to the) ἔργοις (works) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you). ὅτι (For) αὐτοὶ (they) μὲν (indeed) ἀπέκτειναν (killed) αὐτοὺς (them); ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) οἰκοδομεῖτε (build their tombs). ⁴⁹ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) σοφία (Wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἶπεν (said), ‘Ἀποστελῶ (I will send) εἰς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) ἀποστόλους (apostles), καὶ (and) ἐξ (some of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) καὶ (and) διώξουσιν (persecute),’ ⁵⁰ ἵνα (so that) ἐκζητηθῇ (might be charged) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets) τὸ (-) ἐκκεχυμένον (having been poured out) ἀπὸ (from) καταβολῆς (the foundation) κόσμου (of the world) ἀπὸ (against) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this), ⁵¹ ἀπὸ (from) αἵματος (the blood) Ἅβελ (of Abel) ἕως (to) αἵματος (the blood) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah), τοῦ (the one) ἀπολομένου (having perished) μεταξὺ (between) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) οἴκου (house). ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐκζητηθήσεται (it will be required) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this). ⁵² Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), τοῖς (the) νομικοῖς (lawyers), ὅτι (for) ἤρατε (you have taken away) τὴν (the) κλεῖδα (key) τῆς (of the) γνώσεως (knowledge). αὐτοὶ (You yourselves) οὐκ (not) εἰσήλθατε (did enter), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those who) εἰσερχομένους (are entering) ἐκωλύσατε (you hindered).” ⁵³ Κἀκεῖθεν (From there) ἐξελθόντος (having gone forth) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἤρξαντο (began) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) δεινῶς (urgently) ἐνέχειν (to press upon Him) καὶ (and) ἀποστοματίζειν (to make speak) αὐτὸν (Him) περὶ (about) πλειόνων (many things), ⁵⁴ ἐνεδρεύοντες (watching) αὐτὸν (Him) θηρεῦσαί (to catch) τι (in something) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁷ Ἔλεγεν (He was speaking) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (those) κεκλημένους (having been invited) παραβολήν (a parable), ἐπέχων (remarking) πῶς (how) τὰς (the) πρωτοκλισίας (first places) ἐξελέγοντο (they were choosing out), λέγων (saying) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), ⁸ “Ὅταν (When) κληθῇς (you are invited) ὑπό (by) τινος (anyone) εἰς (to) γάμους (wedding feasts), μὴ (not) κατακλιθῇς (do recline) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) πρωτοκλισίαν (first place), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) ἐντιμότερός (one more honorable) σου (than you) ᾖ (might have been) κεκλημένος (invited) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him), ⁹ καὶ (and) ἐλθὼν (having come), ὁ (the one) σὲ (you) καὶ (and) αὐτὸν (him) καλέσας (having invited) ἐρεῖ (will say) σοι (to you), ‘Δὸς (Give) τούτῳ (to this one) τόπον (your place),’ καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἄρξῃ (you should begin) μετὰ (with) αἰσχύνης (shame) τὸν (the) ἔσχατον (last) τόπον (place) κατέχειν (to take). ¹⁰ Ἀλλ’ (But) ὅταν (when) κληθῇς (you are invited), πορευθεὶς (having gone), ἀνάπεσε (recline) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) ἔσχατον (last) τόπον (place), ἵνα (so that) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (might come) ὁ (the one) κεκληκώς (having invited) σε (you), ἐρεῖ (he will say) σοι (to you), ‘Φίλε (Friend), προσανάβηθι (come up) ἀνώτερον (higher).’ τότε (Then) ἔσται (will be) σοι (to you) δόξα (glory) ἐνώπιον (before) πάντων (all) τῶν (those) συνανακειμένων (reclining) σοι (with you). ¹¹ ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

⁴⁶ “Προσέχετε (Beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), τῶν (-) θελόντων (desiring) περιπατεῖν (to walk) ἐν (in) στολαῖς (long robes), καὶ (and) φιλούντων (loving) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), καὶ (and) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), καὶ (and) πρωτοκλισίας (first places) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (banquets); ⁴⁷ οἳ (who) κατεσθίουσιν (devour) τὰς (the) οἰκίας (houses) τῶν (of) χηρῶν (widows), καὶ (and) προφάσει (as a pretext) μακρὰ (at great length) προσεύχονται (pray). οὗτοι (These) λήμψονται (will receive) περισσότερον (more abundant) κρίμα (condemnation).”

¹ Ἀδελφοί (Brothers) μου (of Me), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) προσωπολημψίαις (partiality) ἔχετε (hold) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory). ² Ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) εἰσέλθῃ (might come) εἰς (into) συναγωγὴν (assembly) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀνὴρ (a man) χρυσοδακτύλιος (with a gold ring) ἐν (in) ἐσθῆτι (apparel) λαμπρᾷ (splendid), εἰσέλθῃ (might come in) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) πτωχὸς (a poor man) ἐν (in) ῥυπαρᾷ (shabby) ἐσθῆτι (apparel), ³ ἐπιβλέψητε (you should look) δὲ (also) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the one) φοροῦντα (wearing) τὴν (the) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) τὴν (-) λαμπρὰν (splendid) καὶ (and) εἴπητε (should say), “Σὺ (You) κάθου (sit you) ὧδε (here) καλῶς (honorably),” καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) πτωχῷ (poor) εἴπητε (should say), “Σὺ (You) στῆθι (stand) ἐκεῖ (there),” «ἢ (or), “Κάθου» (Sit) ὑπὸ (under) τὸ (the) ὑποπόδιόν (footstool) μου (of me),” ⁴ [καὶ] (then) οὐ (not) διεκρίθητε (have you made a distinction) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) καὶ (and) ἐγένεσθε (have become) κριταὶ (judges with) διαλογισμῶν (thoughts) πονηρῶν (evil)?

⁹ Ἔγραψά (I have written) τι (something) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church); ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the one) φιλοπρωτεύων (loving to be first) αὐτῶν (among them), Διοτρεφὴς (Diotrephes), οὐκ (not) ἐπιδέχεται (welcomes) ἡμᾶς (us).

⁸ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) κληθῆτε (shall be called) ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi);’ εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (Teacher), πάντες (all) δὲ (now) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀδελφοί (brothers) ἐστε (are).

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) λέγει (says) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), καλόν (good) ἐστιν (it is) ἡμᾶς (for us) ὧδε (here) εἶναι (to be). καὶ (And) ποιήσωμεν (let us make) τρεῖς (three) σκηνάς (tabernacles): σοὶ (for You) μίαν (one), καὶ (and) Μωϋσεῖ (for Moses) μίαν (one), καὶ (and) Ἠλίᾳ (for Elijah) μίαν (one).”

⁵¹ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτῷ (him), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (says), “Τί (What) σοι (to you) θέλεις (do you desire) ποιήσω (I should do)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) τυφλὸς (the blind man) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ραββουνι (Rabboni), ἵνα (that) ἀναβλέψω (I may receive sight).”

³⁸ Στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) θεασάμενος (having beheld) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀκολουθοῦντας (following), λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (What) ζητεῖτε (seek you)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi)”— ὃ (which) λέγεται (is to say), μεθερμηνευόμενον (being translated), Διδάσκαλε (Teacher)— “Ποῦ (where) μένεις (are You staying)?”

⁴⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) Ναθαναήλ (Nathanael), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); σὺ (You) Βασιλεὺς (King) εἶ (are) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).”

² οὗτος (He) ἦλθεν (came) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) νυκτὸς (by night) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἐλήλυθας (You have come), διδάσκαλος (a teacher); οὐδεὶς (no one) γὰρ (for) δύναται (is able) ταῦτα (these) τὰ (-) σημεῖα (signs) ποιεῖν (to do) ἃ (that) σὺ (You) ποιεῖς (do), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ᾖ (should be) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him).”

²⁶ καὶ (And) ἦλθον (they came) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), ὃς (He who) ἦν (was) μετὰ (with) σοῦ (you) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), ᾧ (to whom) σὺ (you) μεμαρτύρηκας (have borne witness), ἴδε (behold) οὗτος (He) βαπτίζει (baptizes), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ἔρχονται (are coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him).”

²⁵ καὶ (And) εὑρόντες (having found) αὐτὸν (Him) πέραν (on the other side) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea), εἶπον (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), πότε (when) ὧδε (here) γέγονας (have You come)?”

¹⁶ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Μαριάμ (Mary).” Στραφεῖσα (Having turned around), ἐκείνη (she) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἑβραϊστί (in Hebrew), “Ραββουνι (Rabboni),” ὃ (that) λέγεται (is to say), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher).”

²⁵ ἀρκετὸν (It is sufficient) τῷ (for the) μαθητῇ (disciple) ἵνα (that) γένηται (he become) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him). εἰ (If) τὸν (the) οἰκοδεσπότην (master of the house) Βεελζεβοὺλ (Beelzebul) ἐπεκάλεσαν (they called), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τοὺς (those) οἰκιακοὺς (house members) αὐτοῦ (of him)!

⁵ Ἔτι (While yet) αὐτοῦ (he) λαλοῦντος (was speaking), ἰδοὺ (behold), νεφέλη (a cloud) φωτεινὴ (bright) ἐπεσκίασεν (overshadowed) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased). ἀκούετε (Listen) αὐτοῦ (to Him)!”

¹⁰ μηδὲ (Neither) κληθῆτε (be called) καθηγηταί (instructors), ὅτι (since) καθηγητὴς (the instructor) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐστιν (is) εἷς (One), ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ).

⁴⁹ καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately) προσελθὼν (having come up) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), εἶπεν (he said), “Χαῖρε (Greetings), ῥαββί (Rabbi),” καὶ (and) κατεφίλησεν (kissed) αὐτόν (Him).

³² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐδεήθην (begged) περὶ (for) σοῦ (you), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐκλίπῃ (may fail) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σου (of you); καὶ (and) σύ (you), ποτε (when) ἐπιστρέψας (you have turned back), στήρισον (strengthen) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφούς (brothers) σου (of you).”

¹³ ὑμεῖς (You) φωνεῖτέ (call) με (Me) Ὁ (-) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Κύριος (Lord), καὶ (and) καλῶς (rightly) λέγετε (you say), εἰμὶ (I am) γάρ (for). ¹⁴ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) ἔνιψα (have washed) ὑμῶν (your) τοὺς (-) πόδας (feet), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ὀφείλετε (ought) ἀλλήλων (of one another) νίπτειν (to wash) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet).

⁹ εἰς (Unto) τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for), Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (lived again), ἵνα (that) καὶ (both the) νεκρῶν (dead) καὶ (and) ζώντων (living) κυριεύσῃ (He might rule over). ¹⁰ Σὺ (You) δὲ (however), τί (why) κρίνεις (judge you) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) σου (or you), ἢ (or) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) τί (why) ἐξουθενεῖς (do despise) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) σου (of you)? πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) παραστησόμεθα (we will stand before) τῷ (the) βήματι (judgment seat) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God).

¹² λέγω (I mean) δὲ (now) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) ἕκαστος (each) ὑμῶν (of you) λέγει (says), “Ἐγὼ (I) μέν (indeed) εἰμι (am) Παύλου (of Paul),” “Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (and) Ἀπολλῶ (of Apollos),” “Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (and) Κηφᾶ (of Cephas),” “Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (and) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).” ¹³ Μεμέρισται (Has been divided) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ)? μὴ (Not) Παῦλος (Paul) ἐσταυρώθη (was crucified) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you)? ἢ (Or) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) Παύλου (of Paul) ἐβαπτίσθητε (were you baptized)?

³ ἔτι (still) γὰρ (for) σαρκικοί (fleshly) ἐστε (you are). ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ἐν (are among) ὑμῖν (you) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἔρις (strife), οὐχὶ (not) σαρκικοί (fleshly) ἐστε (are you), καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man) περιπατεῖτε (are walking)? ⁴ ὅταν (When) γὰρ (for) λέγῃ (might say) τις (one), “Ἐγὼ (I) μέν (indeed) εἰμι (am) Παύλου (of Paul),” ἕτερος (another) δέ (however), “Ἐγὼ (I) Ἀπολλῶ (of Apollos),” οὐκ (not) ἄνθρωποί (fleshly) ἐστε (are you)? ⁵ Τί (Who) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is) Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos)? τί (Who) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) Παῦλος (Paul)? διάκονοι (Servants) δι’ (through) ὧν (whom) ἐπιστεύσατε (you believed), καὶ (also) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἔδωκεν (has given)?

²⁴ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) κυριεύομεν (we lord it over) ὑμῶν (your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλὰ (but) συνεργοί (fellow workers) ἐσμεν (are) τῆς (of the) χαρᾶς (joy) ὑμῶν (with you); τῇ (in the) γὰρ (for) πίστει (faith) ἑστήκατε (you stand firm).

⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) κηρύσσομεν (do we proclaim), ἀλλὰ (but) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Κύριον (Lord); ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) δὲ (now), δούλους (servants) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (for the sake of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

¹⁵ ἐξ (from) οὗ (whom) πᾶσα (every) πατριὰ (family) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) γῆς (earth) ὀνομάζεται (is named),

¹ Παῦλος (Paul) ἀπόστολος (an apostle) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) διὰ (by) θελήματος (the will) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) Τιμόθεος (Timothy) ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother), ² Τοῖς (To the) ἐν (in) Κολοσσαῖς (Colossae) ἁγίοις (saints) καὶ (and) πιστοῖς (faithful) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ): Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹ Μὴ (Not) πολλοὶ (many of you) διδάσκαλοι (teachers) γίνεσθε (let be), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of mine), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) μεῖζον (greater) κρίμα (judgment) λημψόμεθα (we will receive).

³ μηδ’ (not) ὡς (as) κατακυριεύοντες (exercising lordship over) τῶν (-) κλήρων (those in your charge), ἀλλὰ (but) τύποι (examples) γινόμενοι (being) τοῦ (to the) ποιμνίου (flock).

⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) Ἰωάννης (John), ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) συνκοινωνὸς (fellow-partaker) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θλίψει (tribulation) καὶ (and) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) καὶ (and) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) ἐν (in) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐγενόμην (was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νήσῳ (island) τῇ (-) καλουμένῃ (called) Πάτμῳ (Patmos), διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus).

¹⁰ Καὶ (And) ἔπεσα (I fell) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (the) ποδῶν (feet) αὐτοῦ (of him) προσκυνῆσαι (to worship) αὐτῷ (him). καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) μοι (to me), “Ὅρα (See that you) μή (not). σύνδουλός (A fellow servant) σού (with you) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) σου (of you), τῶν (-) ἐχόντων (holding) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) προσκύνησον (worship)! ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) μαρτυρία (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τῆς (-) προφητείας (of prophecy).”

⁹ καὶ (And) λέγει (he says) μοι (to me), “Ὅρα (See that you) μή (not). σύνδουλός (Fellow servant) σού (of you) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) τῶν (with the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) σου (of you) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets), καὶ (and) τῶν (with those) τηρούντων (keeping) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τοῦ (of the) βιβλίου (book) τούτου (this). τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) προσκύνησον (worship)!”

⁸ μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) ὁμοιωθῆτε (be like) αὐτοῖς (to them), οἶδεν (knows) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὧν (of what things) χρείαν (need) ἔχετε (you have), πρὸ (before) τοῦ (-) ὑμᾶς (your) αἰτῆσαι (asking) αὐτόν (Him). ⁹ Οὕτως (Thus) οὖν (therefore) προσεύχεσθε (pray) ὑμεῖς (you): ‘Πάτερ (Father) ἡμῶν (of us), ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens), Ἁγιασθήτω (hallowed be) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) σου (of You).

³² πάντα (All) γὰρ (for) ταῦτα (these things) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἐπιζητοῦσιν (seek after); οἶδεν (knows) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly) ὅτι (that) χρῄζετε (you have need) τούτων (of them) ἁπάντων (all).

¹¹ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ὑμεῖς (you), πονηροὶ (evil) ὄντες (being), οἴδατε (know) δόματα (gifts) ἀγαθὰ (good) διδόναι (to give) τοῖς (to the) τέκνοις (children) ὑμῶν (of you), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens) δώσει (will give) ἀγαθὰ (good things) τοῖς (to those) αἰτοῦσιν (asking) αὐτόν (Him)!

¹ “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοὶ (brothers), καὶ (and) πατέρες (fathers), ἀκούσατέ (hear) μου (of me) τῆς (the) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) νυνὶ (now) ἀπολογίας (defense).”

¹⁴ ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) ἄγονται (are led), οὗτοι (these) υἱοί (sons) εἰσιν (are) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δουλείας (of bondage) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) υἱοθεσίας (of divine adoption as sons), ἐν (by) ᾧ (whom) κράζομεν (we cry), “Ἀββᾶ (Abba)! ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father)!” ¹⁶ αὐτὸ (Himself) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) συμμαρτυρεῖ (bears witness with) τῷ (the) πνεύματι (spirit) ἡμῶν (of us) ὅτι (that) ἐσμὲν (we are) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁷ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τέκνα (children), καὶ (also) κληρονόμοι (heirs), κληρονόμοι (heirs) μὲν (indeed) Θεοῦ (of God), συνκληρονόμοι (joint-heirs) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἴπερ (if indeed) συμπάσχομεν (we suffer with Him), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) συνδοξασθῶμεν (we may be glorified together).

¹⁵ ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) μυρίους (ten thousand) παιδαγωγοὺς (guardians) ἔχητε (you should have) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ), ἀλλ’ (yet) οὐ (not) πολλοὺς (many) πατέρας (fathers); ἐν (in) γὰρ (for) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), ἐγὼ (I) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐγέννησα (have begotten).

¹⁸ Καὶ (and) “Ἔσομαι (I will be) ὑμῖν (to you) εἰς (for) Πατέρα (a father), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἔσεσθέ (will be) μοι (to Me) εἰς (for) υἱοὺς (sons) καὶ (and) θυγατέρας (daughters), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord) Παντοκράτωρ (Almighty).”

¹ Πρεσβυτέρῳ (An elder) μὴ (not) ἐπιπλήξῃς (do rebuke), ἀλλὰ (but) παρακάλει (exhort him) ὡς (as) πατέρα (a father); νεωτέρους (younger men) ὡς (as) ἀδελφούς (brothers); ² πρεσβυτέρας (elder women) ὡς (as) μητέρας (mothers); νεωτέρας (and younger women) ὡς (as) ἀδελφὰς (sisters), ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) ἁγνείᾳ (purity).

⁹ εἶτα (Furthermore) τοὺς (-) μὲν (indeed) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us) πατέρας (fathers) εἴχομεν (we have had) παιδευτὰς (correctors), καὶ (and) ἐνετρεπόμεθα (we respected them); οὐ (not) πολὺ (much) [δὲ] (and) μᾶλλον (more) ὑποταγησόμεθα (shall we be in subjection) τῷ (to the) Πατρὶ (Father) τῶν (-) πνευμάτων (of spirits), καὶ (and) ζήσομεν (shall live)?

¹ Ἴδετε (Behold) ποταπὴν (what) ἀγάπην (love) δέδωκεν (has given) ἡμῖν (to us) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ἵνα (that) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God) κληθῶμεν (we should be called) — καὶ (and) ἐσμέν (we are)! διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (knows) ἡμᾶς (us), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (it knew) αὐτόν (Him).

²⁶ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) ἔσται* (will it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ²⁷ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to be) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) δοῦλος (slave);

⁴³ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) δέ (however) ἐστιν (shall it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἔσται (will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to become) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (will be) πάντων (of all) δοῦλος (slave).

²⁶ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) οὐχ (not) οὕτως (thus shall be). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὁ (the) μείζων (greatest) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), γινέσθω (let him be) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) νεώτερος (younger); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἡγούμενος (leading), ὡς (as) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving). ²⁷ τίς (Who) γὰρ (for) μείζων (is greater), ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining) ἢ (or) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving)? οὐχὶ (Is not) ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining)? ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰμι (am), ὡς (as) ὁ (the One) διακονῶν (serving).

¹⁴ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) ἔνιψα (have washed) ὑμῶν (your) τοὺς (-) πόδας (feet), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ὀφείλετε (ought) ἀλλήλων (of one another) νίπτειν (to wash) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet). ¹⁵ ὑπόδειγμα (A pattern) γὰρ (for) ἔδωκα (I gave) ὑμῖν (you), ἵνα (that) καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I) ἐποίησα (did) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ποιῆτε (should do).

¹⁹ Ἐλεύθερος (Free) γὰρ (for) ὢν (being) ἐκ (from) πάντων (all), πᾶσιν (to all) ἐμαυτὸν (myself) ἐδούλωσα (I became servant), ἵνα (so that) τοὺς (the) πλείονας (more) κερδήσω (I might gain).

²³ διάκονοι (Servants) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) εἰσιν (are they)? παραφρονῶν (As being beside myself) λαλῶ (I speak) ὑπὲρ (above measure): ἐγώ (I too), ἐν (in) κόποις (labors) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) φυλακαῖς (imprisonments) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) πληγαῖς (beatings) ὑπερβαλλόντως (above measure), ἐν (in) θανάτοις (deaths) πολλάκις (often).

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

⁵ Τοῦτο (This) φρονεῖτε (let mind be) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus was): ⁶ Ὃς (Who) ἐν (in) μορφῇ (the form) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑπάρχων (existing), οὐχ (not) ἁρπαγμὸν (something to be grasped) ἡγήσατο (considered) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) ἴσα (equal) Θεῷ (with God), ⁷ ἀλλὰ (but) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἐκένωσεν (emptied), μορφὴν (the form) δούλου (of a servant) λαβών (having taken), ἐν (in) ὁμοιώματι (the likeness) ἀνθρώπων (of men) γενόμενος (having been made). ⁸ καὶ (And) σχήματι (in appearance) εὑρεθεὶς (having been found) ὡς (as) ἄνθρωπος (a man), ἐταπείνωσεν (He humbled) ἑαυτὸν (Himself), γενόμενος (having become) ὑπήκοος (obedient) μέχρι (unto) θανάτου (death), θανάτου (the death) δὲ (even) σταυροῦ (of the cross).

³ “Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) πτωχοὶ (poor) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit), Ὅτι (for) αὐτῶν (theirs) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).

⁴ ὅστις (Whoever) οὖν (therefore) ταπεινώσει (will humble) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὡς (as) τὸ (the) παιδίον (little child) τοῦτο (this), οὗτός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) μείζων (greatest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).

⁵¹ Ἐποίησεν (He has shown) κράτος (strength) ἐν (with) βραχίονι (the arm) αὐτοῦ (of Him), διεσκόρπισεν (He has scattered) ὑπερηφάνους (the proud) διανοίᾳ (in the thought) καρδίας (of heart) αὐτῶν (of them). ⁵² καθεῖλεν (He has brought down) δυνάστας (rulers) ἀπὸ (from) θρόνων (thrones), καὶ (and) ὕψωσεν (exalted) ταπεινούς (the humble).

¹¹ ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

¹⁴ λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), κατέβη (went down) οὗτος (this one) δεδικαιωμένος (justified) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρ’ (rather than) ἐκεῖνον (that). ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

⁶ μείζονα (Greater) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace). διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (gives) χάριν (grace).”

⁵ Ὁμοίως (Likewise), νεώτεροι (younger ones), ὑποτάγητε (be subject) πρεσβυτέροις (to your elders). πάντες (All) δὲ (now) ἀλλήλοις (one to another) τὴν (-) ταπεινοφροσύνην (humility) ἐγκομβώσασθε (gird on), ὅτι (because), “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace).”

³¹ Τίς (Which) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἐποίησεν (did) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father)?” Λέγουσιν (They say), “Ὁ (The) πρῶτος* (first).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) προάγουσιν (go before) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³² ἦλθεν (Came) γὰρ (for) Ἰωάννης (John) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in the) ὁδῷ (way) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (you did believe) αὐτῷ (him), οἱ (-) δὲ (however) τελῶναι (the tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) αὐτῷ (him); ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (then), ἰδόντες (having seen), οὐδὲ (not even) μετεμελήθητε (did repent) ὕστερον (afterward) τοῦ (-) πιστεῦσαι (to believe) αὐτῷ (him).

¹³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) κλείετε (you shut up) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (neither) εἰσέρχεσθε (enter), οὐδὲ (nor even) τοὺς (those who) εἰσερχομένους (are entering) ἀφίετε (do you allow) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in). ^{14 15} Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) περιάγετε (you traverse) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ξηρὰν (dry land) ποιῆσαι (to make) ἕνα (one) προσήλυτον (convert), καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) γένηται (he has become so), ποιεῖτε (you make) αὐτὸν (him) υἱὸν (a son) γεέννης (of hell) διπλότερον (twofold more) ὑμῶν (than yourselves).

²⁵ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) καθαρίζετε (you cleanse) τὸ (the) ἔξωθεν (outside) τοῦ (of the) ποτηρίου (cup) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) παροψίδος (dish); ἔσωθεν (inside), δὲ (however), γέμουσιν (they are full) ἐξ (of) ἁρπαγῆς (greed) καὶ (and) ἀκρασίας (self-indulgence).

²⁷ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) παρομοιάζετε (you are like) τάφοις (tombs) κεκονιαμένοις (having been whitewashed), οἵτινες (which) ἔξωθεν (outwardly) μὲν (indeed) φαίνονται (appear) ὡραῖοι (beautiful). ἔσωθεν (Inside) δὲ (however) γέμουσιν (they are full) ὀστέων (of bones) νεκρῶν (of the dead), καὶ (and) πάσης (of all) ἀκαθαρσίας (impurity).

²⁹ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) οἰκοδομεῖτε (you build) τοὺς (the) τάφους (tombs) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) καὶ (and) κοσμεῖτε (adorn) τὰ (the) μνημεῖα (monuments) τῶν (of the) δικαίων (righteous);

⁴³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (-) Φαρισαίοις (Pharisees), ὅτι (for) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love) τὴν (the) πρωτοκαθεδρίαν (first seat) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces). ⁴⁴ οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (for) ἐστὲ (you are) ὡς (like) τὰ (-) μνημεῖα (graves) τὰ (-) ἄδηλα (unmarked), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄνθρωποι (men) οἱ (-) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐπάνω (above) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (have known it).”

⁵² Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), τοῖς (the) νομικοῖς (lawyers), ὅτι (for) ἤρατε (you have taken away) τὴν (the) κλεῖδα (key) τῆς (of the) γνώσεως (knowledge). αὐτοὶ (You yourselves) οὐκ (not) εἰσήλθατε (did enter), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those who) εἰσερχομένους (are entering) ἐκωλύσατε (you hindered).”

⁴⁶ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) οὕτως (like this) ἄνθρωπος (a man), 〈ὡς (as) οὗτος (this) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος〉 (man).” ⁴⁷ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (them) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πεπλάνησθε (have been deceived)? ⁴⁸ μή (Not) τις (any) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) ἐπίστευσεν (has believed) εἰς (on) αὐτὸν (Him), ἢ (or) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees)? ⁴⁹ ἀλλὰ (But) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) οὗτος (this), ὁ (-) μὴ (not) γινώσκων (knowing) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ἐπάρατοί (accursed) εἰσιν (are).” ⁵⁰ Λέγει (Says) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), ὁ (the one) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him), [τὸ] (the) πρότερον (former) εἷς (one) ὢν (being) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), ⁵¹ “Μὴ (Not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἡμῶν (of us) κρίνει (does judge) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀκούσῃ (it has heard) πρῶτον (first) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) καὶ (and) γνῷ (known) τί (what) ποιεῖ (he does)?” ⁵² Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐκ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) εἶ (are)? ἐραύνησον (Search) καὶ (and) ἴδε (see) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) προφήτης (a prophet) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρεται (is raised).”

²² Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (because) ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid) τοὺς (of the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews); ἤδη (already) γὰρ (for) συνετέθειντο (had agreed together) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἵνα (that) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁμολογήσῃ (should confess) Χριστόν (Christ), ἀποσυνάγωγος (expelled from the synagogue) γένηται (he would be).

²⁴ Ἐφώνησαν (They called) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐκ (out) δευτέρου (a second time) ὃς (who) ἦν (had been) τυφλὸς (blind), καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Δὸς (Give) δόξαν (glory) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God)! ἡμεῖς (We) οἴδαμεν (know) ὅτι (that) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἁμαρτωλός (a sinner) ἐστιν (is).”

³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐν (In) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) σὺ (you) ἐγεννήθης (were born) ὅλος (entirely), καὶ (and) σὺ (you) διδάσκεις (teach) ἡμᾶς (us)?” καὶ (And) ἐξέβαλον (they cast) αὐτὸν (him) ἔξω (out).

¹⁷ ἀλλ’ (But) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐπὶ (on) πλεῖον (further) διανεμηθῇ (it might spread) εἰς (among) τὸν (the) λαόν (people), ἀπειλησώμεθα (let us warn) αὐτοῖς (them) μηκέτι (no longer) λαλεῖν (to speak) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this) μηδενὶ (to no) ἀνθρώπων (man).” ¹⁸ Καὶ (And) καλέσαντες (having called) αὐτοὺς (them), παρήγγειλαν (they commanded them) ‹τὸ› (-) καθόλου (at all) μὴ (not) φθέγγεσθαι (to speak) μηδὲ (nor) διδάσκειν (to teach) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus).

²⁸ λέγων (saying), “[Οὐ] (Not) Παραγγελίᾳ (by a charge) παρηγγείλαμεν (we commanded) ὑμῖν (you) μὴ (not) διδάσκειν (to teach) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this)? καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), πεπληρώκατε (you have filled) τὴν (-) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) τῆς (with the) διδαχῆς (teaching) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) βούλεσθε (you intend) ἐπαγαγεῖν (to bring) ἐφ’ (upon) ἡμᾶς (us) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) τούτου (this).”

⁴⁰ Ἐπείσθησαν (They were persuaded) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (by him); καὶ (and) προσκαλεσάμενοι (having called in) τοὺς (the) ἀποστόλους (apostles), δείραντες (having beaten), παρήγγειλαν (they commanded them) μὴ (not) λαλεῖν (to speak) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπέλυσαν (released them).

¹ Σαῦλος (Saul) δὲ (now) ἦν (was there) συνευδοκῶν (consenting) τῇ (to the) ἀναιρέσει (killing) αὐτοῦ (of him). Ἐγένετο (Arose) δὲ (then) ἐν (on) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) διωγμὸς (a persecution) μέγας (great) ἐπὶ (against) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) τὴν (which was) ἐν (in) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem). πάντες (All) δὲ (then) διεσπάρησαν (were scattered) κατὰ (throughout) τὰς (the) χώρας (regions) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) καὶ (and) Σαμαρείας (Samaria), πλὴν (except) τῶν (the) ἀποστόλων (apostles).

⁸ ἀνθίστατο (Was opposing) δὲ (however) αὐτοῖς (them) Ἐλύμας (Elymas) ὁ (the) μάγος (magician) — οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) μεθερμηνεύεται (means) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of him) — ζητῶν (seeking) διαστρέψαι (to turn away) τὸν (the) ἀνθύπατον (proconsul) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith).

¹⁵ τῶν (who) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἀποκτεινάντων (having killed), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) τοὺς (their own) προφήτας (prophets), καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκδιωξάντων (having driven out), καὶ (and) Θεῷ (God) μὴ (not) ἀρεσκόντων (pleasing), καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐναντίων (who are set against), ¹⁶ κωλυόντων (hindering) ἡμᾶς (us) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) λαλῆσαι (to speak), ἵνα (that) σωθῶσιν (they might be saved), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) ἀναπληρῶσαι (to fill up) αὐτῶν (their) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins) πάντοτε (always). ἔφθασεν (Has come) δὲ (now) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτοὺς (them) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) εἰς (to the) τέλος (utmost).

⁸ ὃν (By which) τρόπον (way) δὲ (now) Ἰάννης (Jannes) καὶ (and) Ἰαμβρῆς (Jambres) ἀντέστησαν (opposed) Μωϋσεῖ (Moses), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) οὗτοι (these) ἀνθίστανται (oppose) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), ἄνθρωποι (men) κατεφθαρμένοι (being depraved) τὸν (-) νοῦν (in mind), ἀδόκιμοι (disqualified) περὶ (regarding) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith).

¹⁵ ὃν (whom) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) φυλάσσου (beware of), λίαν (exceedingly) γὰρ (for) ἀντέστη (he has opposed) τοῖς (-) ἡμετέροις (our) λόγοις (message).

²⁴ πλὴν (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) γῇ (for the land) Σοδόμων (of Sodom) ἀνεκτότερον (more tolerable) ἔσται (will it be) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (day) κρίσεως (of judgment) ἢ (than) σοί (for you).”

³³ ὄφεις (Serpents)! γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers)! πῶς (How) φύγητε (shall you escape) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) κρίσεως (sentence) τῆς (-) γεέννης (of hell)? ³⁴ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) σοφοὺς (wise men) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes). ἐξ (Some of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποκτενεῖτε (you will kill) καὶ (and) σταυρώσετε (will crucify), καὶ (and some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) μαστιγώσετε (you will flog) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) διώξετε (will persecute) ἀπὸ (from) πόλεως (town) εἰς (to) πόλιν (town); ³⁵ ὅπως (so that) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) πᾶν (all the) αἷμα (blood) δίκαιον (righteous) ἐκχυννόμενον (being poured out) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ἅβελ (of Abel) τοῦ (the) δικαίου (righteous), ἕως (to) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah) υἱοῦ (son) Βαραχίου (of Berekiah), ὃν (whom) ἐφονεύσατε (you murdered) μεταξὺ (between) τοῦ (the) ναοῦ (temple) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar). ³⁶ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἥξει (will come) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γενεὰν (generation) ταύτην (this).

⁴⁰ οἱ (those) κατεσθίοντες (devouring) τὰς (the) οἰκίας (houses) τῶν (of the) χηρῶν (widows), καὶ (and) προφάσει (as a pretext), μακρὰ (at great length) προσευχόμενοι (praying). οὗτοι (These) λήμψονται (will receive) περισσότερον (greater) κρίμα (judgment).”

⁴⁸ ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) γνοὺς (having known), ποιήσας (having done) δὲ (however) ἄξια (things worthy) πληγῶν (of stripes), δαρήσεται (will be beaten with) ὀλίγας (few). παντὶ (Everyone) δὲ (now) ᾧ (to whom) ἐδόθη (has been given) πολύ (much), πολὺ (much) ζητηθήσεται (will be required) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him); καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) παρέθεντο (has been committed) πολύ (much), περισσότερον (the more) αἰτήσουσιν (will they ask of) αὐτόν (him).

⁴⁷ οἳ (who) κατεσθίουσιν (devour) τὰς (the) οἰκίας (houses) τῶν (of) χηρῶν (widows), καὶ (and) προφάσει (as a pretext) μακρὰ (at great length) προσεύχονται (pray). οὗτοι (These) λήμψονται (will receive) περισσότερον (more abundant) κρίμα (condemnation).”

⁶ Ἐκ (Out of) τούτων (this sort) γάρ (for) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those) ἐνδύνοντες (entering) εἰς (into) τὰς (-) οἰκίας (households) καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντες (taking captive) γυναικάρια (weak women), σεσωρευμένα (burdened) ἁμαρτίαις (with sins), ἀγόμενα (being led away) ἐπιθυμίαις (by passions) ποικίλαις (various),

¹⁰ Εἰσὶν (There are) γὰρ (for) πολλοὶ (many) ‹καὶ› (also) ἀνυπότακτοι (insubordinate), ματαιολόγοι (empty talkers), καὶ (and) φρεναπάται (deceivers), μάλιστα (especially) οἱ (those) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) περιτομῆς (circumcision), ¹¹ οὓς (whom) δεῖ (it is necessary) ἐπιστομίζειν (to silence), οἵτινες (who) ὅλους (whole) οἴκους (households) ἀνατρέπουσιν (overthrow), διδάσκοντες (teaching) ἃ (things that they) μὴ (not) δεῖ (ought), αἰσχροῦ (base) κέρδους (gain) χάριν (for the sake of).

³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

¹⁴ ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντες (having) μεστοὺς (full) μοιχαλίδος (of adultery), καὶ (and) ἀκαταπαύστους (unceasing) ἁμαρτίας (from sin), δελεάζοντες (enticing) ψυχὰς (souls) ἀστηρίκτους (unestablished); καρδίαν (a heart) γεγυμνασμένην (having been exercised) πλεονεξίας (in craving) ἔχοντες (having)— κατάρας (of a curse) τέκνα (children)! ¹⁵ Καταλιπόντες (Having left) εὐθεῖαν (the straight) ὁδὸν (way), ἐπλανήθησαν (they have gone astray), ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) τοῦ (-) Βοσὸρ* (son of Bosor), ὃς (who) μισθὸν (the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) ἠγάπησεν (loved);

²² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀργιζόμενος (being angry with) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῇ (to the) κρίσει (judgment); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Ῥακά (Raca),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῷ (to the) συνεδρίῳ (Sanhedrin); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say), ‘Μωρέ (Fool),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire).

²⁹ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) ὁ (-) δεξιὸς (right) σκανδαλίζει (causes to stumble) σε (you), ἔξελε (pluck out) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); συμφέρει (it is better) γάρ (for) σοι (for you) ἵνα (that) ἀπόληται (should perish) ἓν (one) τῶν (of the) μελῶν (members) σου (of you), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμά (body) σου (of you) βληθῇ (should be cast) εἰς (into) γέενναν (hell).

⁴⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστὲ (are), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τοῦ (of) πατρὸς (father) ὑμῶν (of you), θέλετε (you desire) ποιεῖν (to do). ἐκεῖνος (He) ἀνθρωποκτόνος (a murderer) ἦν (was) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστηκεν (has stood), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). ὅταν (Whenever) λαλῇ (he might speak) τὸ (-) ψεῦδος (falsehood), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) λαλεῖ (he speaks); ὅτι (for) ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστὶν (he is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of it).

¹⁰ Φρυγίαν (Phrygia) τε (both) καὶ (and) Παμφυλίαν (Pamphylia), Αἴγυπτον (Egypt) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) μέρη (parts) τῆς (-) Λιβύης (of Libya) τῆς (that) κατὰ (are around) Κυρήνην (Cyrene), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐπιδημοῦντες (visiting here) Ῥωμαῖοι (from Rome);

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤρεσεν (was pleasing) ὁ (the) λόγος (statement) ἐνώπιον (before) παντὸς (all) τοῦ (the) πλήθους (multitude); καὶ (and) ἐξελέξαντο (they chose) Στέφανον (Stephen), ἄνδρα (a man) πλήρης* (full) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (holy), καὶ (and) Φίλιππον (Philip), καὶ (and) Πρόχορον (Prochorus), καὶ (and) Νικάνορα (Nicanor), καὶ (and) Τίμωνα (Timon), καὶ (and) Παρμενᾶν (Parmenas), καὶ (and) Νικόλαον (Nicolas) προσήλυτον (a convert) Ἀντιοχέα (of Antioch),

¹⁰ εἶπεν (said), “Ὦ (O) πλήρης (full) παντὸς (of all) δόλου (deceit) καὶ (and) πάσης (all) ῥᾳδιουργίας (craft), υἱὲ (son) διαβόλου (of the devil), ἐχθρὲ (enemy) πάσης (of all) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), οὐ (not) παύσῃ (will you cease) διαστρέφων (perverting) τὰς (the) ὁδοὺς (ways) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (of Lord) τὰς (-) εὐθείας (straight)?

⁴³ λυθείσης (Having broken up) δὲ (then) τῆς (the) συναγωγῆς (synagogue), ἠκολούθησαν (followed) πολλοὶ (many) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) καὶ (and) τῶν (of the) σεβομένων (worshipping) προσηλύτων (converts) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul) καὶ (and) τῷ (-) Βαρνάβᾳ (Barnabas), οἵτινες (who) προσλαλοῦντες (speaking) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἔπειθον (kept persuading) αὐτοὺς (them) προσμένειν (to continue) τῇ (in the) χάριτι (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

² οἱ (The) δὲ (however) ἀπειθήσαντες (unbelieving) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἐπήγειραν (stirred up) καὶ (and) ἐκάκωσαν (poisoned) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (minds) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατὰ (against) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers).

¹⁹ Ἐπῆλθαν (Came) δὲ (however) ἀπὸ (from) Ἀντιοχείας (Antioch) καὶ (and) Ἰκονίου (Iconium) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) πείσαντες (having persuaded) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), καὶ (and) λιθάσαντες (having stoned) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul), ἔσυρον (they dragged him) ἔξω (outside) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city), νομίζοντες (supposing) αὐτὸν (him) τεθνηκέναι (to have died).

⁵ Ζηλώσαντες (Having become jealous) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) προσλαβόμενοι (having taken to them) τῶν (of the) ἀγοραίων (market-loungers) ἄνδρας (men) τινὰς (certain) πονηροὺς (wicked), καὶ (and) ὀχλοποιήσαντες (having collected a crowd), ἐθορύβουν (they set in uproar) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city); καὶ (and) ἐπιστάντες (having assailed) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) Ἰάσονος (of Jason), ἐζήτουν (they were seeking) αὐτοὺς (them) προαγαγεῖν (to bring out) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) δῆμον (people). ⁶ μὴ (Not) εὑρόντες (having found) δὲ (however) αὐτοὺς (them), ἔσυρον (they dragged) Ἰάσονα (Jason) καί (and) τινας (certain) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) ἐπὶ (before) τοὺς (the) πολιτάρχας (city authorities), βοῶντες (crying out) ὅτι (-), “Οἱ (The ones) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world) ἀναστατώσαντες (having upset), οὗτοι (these) καὶ (also) ἐνθάδε (here) πάρεισιν (are come),

¹³ Ὡς (When) δὲ (however) ἔγνωσαν (knew) οἱ (those) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Θεσσαλονίκης (Thessalonica) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Βεροίᾳ (Berea) κατηγγέλη (was proclaimed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἦλθον (they came) κἀκεῖ (there also), σαλεύοντες (stirring up) καὶ (and) ταράσσοντες (agitating) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds).

¹⁷ Ζηλοῦσιν (They are zealous after) ὑμᾶς (you) οὐ (not) καλῶς (rightly), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκκλεῖσαι (to exclude) ὑμᾶς (you from us). θέλουσιν (They desire) ἵνα (so that) αὐτοὺς (them) ζηλοῦτε (you might be zealous after).

¹² Ὅσοι (As many as) θέλουσιν (wish) εὐπροσωπῆσαι (to have a fair appearance) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), οὗτοι (these) ἀναγκάζουσιν (compel) ὑμᾶς (you) περιτέμνεσθαι (to be circumcised), μόνον (only) ἵνα (that) τῷ (for the) σταυρῷ (cross) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) μὴ (not) διώκωνται (they might be persecuted).

³ ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἀνεστράφημέν (lived) ποτε (once) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us), ποιοῦντες (doing) τὰ (the) θελήματα (things willed) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) τῶν (of its) διανοιῶν (thoughts); καὶ (and) ἤμεθα (we were) τέκνα (children), φύσει (by nature), ὀργῆς (of wrath), ὡς (as) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λοιποί (rest).

³³ Πάλιν (Again), ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχαίοις (ancients), ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιορκήσεις (shall you swear falsely); ἀποδώσεις (you shall keep) δὲ (now) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) τοὺς (the) ὅρκους (oaths) σου (of you).’ ³⁴ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) μὴ (not) ὀμόσαι (to swear) ὅλως (at all): μήτε (neither) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), ὅτι (because) θρόνος (the throne) ἐστὶν (it is) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ³⁵ μήτε (nor) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) γῇ (earth), ὅτι (because) ὑποπόδιόν (the footstool) ἐστιν (it is) τῶν (of the) ποδῶν (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him); μήτε (nor) εἰς (by) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), ὅτι (because) πόλις (the city) ἐστὶν (it is) τοῦ (of the) μεγάλου (great) Βασιλέως (King).

⁵ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), “Δῶρον (It is a gift), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),” ⁶ οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) 〈ἢ (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ〉 (of himself).’ καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)!

¹⁴ ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)! τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of the blind). τυφλὸς (Blind) δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (they lead), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).”

¹⁷ μωροὶ (Foolish) καὶ (and) τυφλοί (blind)! τίς (Which) γὰρ (for) μείζων (greater) ἐστίν (is), ὁ (the) χρυσὸς (gold), ἢ (or) ὁ (the) ναὸς (temple) ὁ (-) ἁγιάσας (having sanctified) τὸν (the) χρυσόν (gold)?

¹⁹ τυφλοί (You blind men)! τί (Which) γὰρ (for) μεῖζον (is greater), τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift), ἢ (or) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar) τὸ (-) ἁγιάζον (sanctifying) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift)?

²⁴ ὁδηγοὶ (Guides) τυφλοί (blind)! οἱ (Those) διϋλίζοντες (straining out) τὸν (the) κώνωπα (gnat), τὴν (the) δὲ (however) κάμηλον (camel) καταπίνοντες (swallowing)!

²⁶ Φαρισαῖε (Pharisee) τυφλέ (blind)! καθάρισον (Cleanse) πρῶτον (first) τὸ (the) ἐντὸς (inside) τοῦ (of the) ποτηρίου (cup) ‹καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) παροψίδος› (dish) ἵνα (that) γένηται (might become) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) ἐκτὸς (outside) αὐτοῦ (of them) καθαρόν (clean).

¹⁰ Μωϋσῆς (Moses) γὰρ (for) εἶπεν (said), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) σου (of you),’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ¹¹ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say that) Ἐὰν (if) εἴπῃ (says) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ‘Κορβᾶν (It is Corban),’ ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is), Δῶρον (a gift), ‘Ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),’ ¹² οὐκέτι (no longer) ἀφίετε (do you allow) αὐτὸν (him) οὐδὲν (anything) ποιῆσαι (to do) τῷ (for the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ¹³ ἀκυροῦντες (making void) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῇ (for the) παραδόσει (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you) ᾗ (which) παρεδώκατε (you have handed down). καὶ (And) παρόμοια (like things) τοιαῦτα (such) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖτε (you do).”

³⁹ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰς (For) κρίμα (judgment) ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) τοῦτον (this) ἦλθον (came), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέπωσιν (may see); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) βλέποντες (seeing), τυφλοὶ (blind) γένωνται (may become).” ⁴⁰ ἤκουσαν (Heard) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ταῦτα (these things), οἱ (who) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὄντες (were), καὶ (and) εἶπον* (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) τυφλοί (blind) ἐσμεν (are)?” ⁴¹ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) τυφλοὶ (blind) ἦτε (you were), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) εἴχετε (you would have) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); νῦν (since) δὲ (however) λέγετε (you say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλέπομεν (We see),’ ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ὑμῶν (of you) μένει (remains).”

³ μαρτύρομαι (I testify) δὲ (now) πάλιν (again) παντὶ (to every) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) περιτεμνομένῳ (being circumcised) ὅτι (that) ὀφειλέτης (a debtor) ἐστὶν (he is) ὅλον (all) τὸν (the) νόμον (Law) ποιῆσαι (to keep).

¹² Πρὸ (Before) πάντων (all things) δέ (however), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), μὴ (not) ὀμνύετε (swear), μήτε (neither by) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), μήτε (nor) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), μήτε (nor) ἄλλον (other) τινὰ (any) ὅρκον (oath). ἤτω (Be) δὲ (however) ὑμῶν (of you) τὸ (the) “Ναὶ (Yes),” ναί (yes), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) “Οὒ (No),” οὔ (no), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὑπὸ (under) κρίσιν (judgment) πέσητε (you might fall).

²² ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) συνοικοδομεῖσθε (are being built together) εἰς (for) κατοικητήριον (a habitation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit).

⁹ ὅτι (For) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) κατοικεῖ (dwells) πᾶν (all) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τῆς (of the) Θεότητος (Deity) σωματικῶς (bodily);

³⁴ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) μὴ (not) ὀμόσαι (to swear) ὅλως (at all): μήτε (neither) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), ὅτι (because) θρόνος (the throne) ἐστὶν (it is) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God);

⁴⁹ ‘Ὁ (-) οὐρανός (Heaven is) μοι (to Me) θρόνος (a throne), ἡ (-) δὲ (and) γῆ (the earth) ὑποπόδιον (a footstool) τῶν (of the) ποδῶν (feet) μου (of Me). ποῖον (What kind of) οἶκον (house) οἰκοδομήσετέ (will you build) μοι (Me), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), ἢ (or) τίς (what is) τόπος (the place) τῆς (of the) καταπαύσεώς (rest) μου (of Me)?

² εὐθέως (Immediately) ἐγενόμην (I was) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), θρόνος (a throne) ἔκειτο (was set) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) θρόνον (throne) καθήμενος (One sitting), ³ καὶ (and) ὁ (the One) καθήμενος (sitting) ὅμοιος (was like) ὁράσει (in appearance) λίθῳ (stone), ἰάσπιδι (jasper) καὶ (and) σαρδίῳ (sardius). καὶ (And) ἶρις (a rainbow) κυκλόθεν (was around) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne), ὅμοιος (like) ὁράσει (in appearance) σμαραγδίνῳ (an emerald).

¹⁹ Ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) οὖν (then) λύσῃ (shall break) μίαν (one) τῶν (of the) ἐντολῶν (commandments) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least) καὶ (and) διδάξῃ (shall teach) οὕτως (so) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (others), ἐλάχιστος (least) κληθήσεται (he will be called) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ποιήσῃ (shall keep) καὶ (and) διδάξῃ (shall teach them), οὗτος (this one) μέγας (great) κληθήσεται (will be called) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ²⁰ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) περισσεύσῃ (shall abound) ὑμῶν (your) ἡ (-) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) πλεῖον (above that) τῶν (of the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (shall you enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).

¹³ πορευθέντες (Having gone) δὲ (however), μάθετε (learn) τί (what) ἐστιν (is), ‘Ἔλεος (Mercy) θέλω (I desire), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θυσίαν (sacrifice).’ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἦλθον (I came) καλέσαι (to call) δικαίους (the righteous), ἀλλὰ (but) ἁμαρτωλούς (sinners).”

⁷ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἐγνώκειτε (you had known) τί (what) ἐστιν (is), ‘Ἔλεος (Mercy) θέλω (I desire) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θυσίαν (sacrifice),’ οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) κατεδικάσατε (you would have condemned) τοὺς (the) ἀναιτίους (guiltless).

³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (soul) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) διανοίᾳ (mind) σου (of you).’ ³⁸ αὕτη (This) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μεγάλη (great) καὶ (and) πρώτη (first) ἐντολή (commandment). ³⁹ δευτέρα (The second) ‹δὲ› (also) ὁμοία (is like) αὐτῇ (it): ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’ ⁴⁰ ἐν (On) ταύταις (these) ταῖς (-) δυσὶν (two) ἐντολαῖς (commandments), ὅλος (all) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) κρέμαται (hangs) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (Prophets).”

⁴² Ἀλλὰ (But) οὐαὶ (woe) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (-) Φαρισαίοις (Pharisees), ὅτι (for) ἀποδεκατοῦτε (you pay tithes of) τὸ (-) ἡδύοσμον (mint) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) πήγανον (rue) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) λάχανον (herb); καὶ (and) παρέρχεσθε (you pass by) τὴν (the) κρίσιν (justice) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (also) ἔδει (it behooved you) ποιῆσαι (to do), κἀκεῖνα (and those) μὴ (not) παρεῖναι (to neglect).

¹² νηστεύω (I fast) δὶς (twice) τοῦ (in the) σαββάτου (week); ἀποδεκατῶ (I tithe) πάντα (all things), ὅσα (as many as) κτῶμαι (I gain).’

²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) ἀγάπη (love), χαρά (joy), εἰρήνη (peace), μακροθυμία (patience), χρηστότης (kindness), ἀγαθωσύνη (goodness), πίστις (faithfulness), ²³ πραΰτης (gentleness), ἐγκράτεια (self-control); κατὰ (against) τῶν (things) τοιούτων (such), οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law).

⁴ ἢ (Or) πῶς (how) ἐρεῖς (shall you say) τῷ (to the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) σου (of you), ‘Ἄφες (Permit that) ἐκβάλω (I might cast out) τὸ (the) κάρφος (splinter) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye) σου (of you);’ καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἡ (the) δοκὸς (beam) ἐν (is in) τῷ (the) ὀφθαλμῷ (eye) σοῦ (of you)?

² “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) παραβαίνουσιν (break) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders)? οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) νίπτονται (they wash) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ‹αὐτῶν› (of them) ὅταν (when) ἄρτον (bread) ἐσθίωσιν (they shall eat).” ³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) παραβαίνετε (break) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)? ⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (commanded), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother)’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’

²⁴ πάλιν (Again) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), εὐκοπώτερόν (easier for) ἐστιν (it is) κάμηλον (a camel) διὰ (through the) τρυπήματος (eye) ῥαφίδος (of a needle) εἰσελθεῖν (to go), ἢ (than) πλούσιον (a rich man) [εἰσελθεῖν] (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God).”

¹⁶ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁδηγοὶ (guides) τυφλοὶ (blind), οἱ (those) λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple), οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (it is); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) χρυσῷ (gold) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) ὀφείλει (is bound by his oath).’

⁶ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀρχιερεῖς (the chief priests), λαβόντες (having taken) τὰ (the) ἀργύρια (pieces of silver), εἶπαν (said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) βαλεῖν (to put) αὐτὰ (them) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κορβανᾶν (treasury), ἐπεὶ (since the) τιμὴ (price) αἵματός (of blood) ἐστιν (it is).” ⁷ συμβούλιον (Counsel) δὲ (then) λαβόντες (having taken), ἠγόρασαν (they bought) ἐξ (with) αὐτῶν (them) τὸν (the) ἀγρὸν (field) τοῦ (of the) κεραμέως (potter), εἰς (for) ταφὴν (a burial place) τοῖς (for the) ξένοις (strangers). ⁸ διὸ (Therefore) ἐκλήθη (was called) ὁ (the) ἀγρὸς (field) ἐκεῖνος (that), Ἀγρὸς (Field) αἵματος (of Blood), ἕως (to) τῆς (-) σήμερον (this day).

⁷ παρετηροῦντο (Were closely watching) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), εἰ (whether) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) θεραπεύει (He will heal), ἵνα (that) εὕρωσιν (they might find reason) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him). ⁸ Αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (now) ᾔδει (knew) τοὺς (the) διαλογισμοὺς (thoughts) αὐτῶν (of them); εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (now) τῷ (to the) ἀνδρὶ (man) τῷ (the) ξηρὰν (withered) ἔχοντι (having) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), “Ἔγειρε (Arise) καὶ (and) στῆθι (stand) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) μέσον (midst).” καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having risen up), ἔστη (he stood). ⁹ εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἐπερωτῶ (I ask) ὑμᾶς (you), εἰ (whether) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) ἀγαθοποιῆσαι (to do good) ἢ (or) κακοποιῆσαι (to do evil)? ψυχὴν (Life) σῶσαι (to save) ἢ (or) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy)?” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around) πάντας (all) αὐτοὺς (on them), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἔκτεινον (Stretch out) τὴν (the) χεῖρά (hand) σου (of you).” ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἐποίησεν (he did), καὶ (and) ἀπεκατεστάθη (was restored) ἡ (the) χεὶρ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²⁸ Ἄγουσιν (They are leading) οὖν (then) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium). ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) πρωΐ (early), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐκ (not) εἰσῆλθον (entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) μιανθῶσιν (they should be defiled), ἀλλὰ (but) φάγωσιν (might eat) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover).

⁴⁰ Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (then) πάλιν (again) λέγοντες (saying), “Μὴ (Not) τοῦτον (this one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas)!” ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Βαραββᾶς (Barabbas) λῃστής (an insurrectionist).

⁴ καὶ (and) ἀπ’ (on coming from) ἀγορᾶς (the market), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) βαπτίσωνται* (they wash) οὐκ (not) ἐσθίουσιν (they eat); καὶ (and) ἄλλα (other things) πολλά (many) ἐστιν (there are) ἃ (which) παρέλαβον (they received) κρατεῖν (for them to hold to) — βαπτισμοὺς (washings) ποτηρίων (of cups) καὶ (and) ξεστῶν (vessels) καὶ (and) χαλκίων (utensils) ‹καὶ (and) κλινῶν› (couches for dining). ⁵ Καὶ (And) ἐπερωτῶσιν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὐ (not) περιπατοῦσιν (walk) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), ἀλλὰ (but) κοιναῖς (with unwashed) χερσὶν (hands) ἐσθίουσιν (eat) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread)?” ⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) τῶν (-) ὑποκριτῶν (hypocrites), ὡς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (-): ‘Οὗτος (This) ὁ (-) λαὸς (people) τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (honors), Ἡ (-) δὲ (but) καρδία (the heart) αὐτῶν (of them) πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me). ⁷ Μάτην (In vain) δὲ (now) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me), Διδάσκοντες (teaching) διδασκαλίας (as doctrines) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).’ ⁸ Ἀφέντες (Having neglected) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κρατεῖτε (you hold) τὴν (to the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men).” ⁹ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καλῶς (Neatly) ἀθετεῖτε (do you set aside) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (that) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you), τηρήσητε (you might keep).

³⁹ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him), “Νῦν (Now) ὑμεῖς (you) οἱ (-) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), τὸ (the) ἔξωθεν (outside) τοῦ (of the) ποτηρίου (cup) καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) πίνακος (dish) καθαρίζετε (you cleanse), τὸ (-) δὲ (and) ἔσωθεν (the inside) ὑμῶν (of you) γέμει (is full) ἁρπαγῆς (of plundering) καὶ (and) πονηρίας (wickedness). ⁴⁰ ἄφρονες (Fools)! οὐχ (Did not) ὁ (the One) ποιήσας (having made) τὸ (the) ἔξωθεν (outside), καὶ (also) τὸ (the) ἔσωθεν (inside) ἐποίησεν (make)?

³³ Ἢ (Either) ποιήσατε (make) τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) καλὸν (good) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it) καλόν (good), ἢ (or) ποιήσατε (make) τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) σαπρὸν (bad) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it) σαπρόν (bad); ἐκ (by) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (the) καρποῦ (fruit), τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) γινώσκεται (is known).

⁴⁵ ὁ (The) ἀγαθὸς (good) ἄνθρωπος (man), ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀγαθοῦ (good) θησαυροῦ (treasure) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ‹αὐτοῦ› (of him) προφέρει (brings forth) τὸ (that which is) ἀγαθόν (good); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πονηρὸς (evil), ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) πονηροῦ (evil), προφέρει (brings forth) τὸ (that which is) πονηρόν (evil). ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) περισσεύματος (the abundance) καρδίας (of his heart), λαλεῖ (speaks) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹ Ταύτας (These) οὖν (therefore) ἔχοντες (having) τὰς (-) ἐπαγγελίας (promises), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), καθαρίσωμεν (we should cleanse) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) ἀπὸ (from) παντὸς (every) μολυσμοῦ (defilement) σαρκὸς (of flesh) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἐπιτελοῦντες (perfecting) ἁγιωσύνην (holiness) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (the fear) Θεοῦ (of God).

²² προσερχώμεθα (we should draw near) μετὰ (with) ἀληθινῆς (a sincere) καρδίας (heart) ἐν (in) πληροφορίᾳ (full assurance) πίστεως (of faith), ῥεραντισμένοι (having been sprinkled clean) τὰς (our) καρδίας (hearts) ἀπὸ (from) συνειδήσεως (a conscience) πονηρᾶς (evil), καὶ (and) λελουσμένοι (having been washed) τὸ (our) σῶμα (body) ὕδατι (with water) καθαρῷ (pure).

⁸ ἐγγίσατε (Draw near) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), καὶ (and) ἐγγιεῖ* (He will draw near) ὑμῖν (to you). καθαρίσατε (Cleanse) χεῖρας (your hands), ἁμαρτωλοί (you sinners), καὶ (and) ἁγνίσατε (have purified) καρδίας (hearts), δίψυχοι (you double-minded).

⁴⁴ οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (for) ἐστὲ (you are) ὡς (like) τὰ (-) μνημεῖα (graves) τὰ (-) ἄδηλα (unmarked), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄνθρωποι (men) οἱ (-) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐπάνω (above) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (have known it).”

³ Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) εἶπεν (said), “Τύπτειν (To strike) σε (you) μέλλει (is about) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), τοῖχε (wall) κεκονιαμένε (whitewashed)! καὶ (And) σὺ (you), κάθῃ (do you sit) κρίνων (judging) με (me) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), καὶ (and) παρανομῶν (violating law), κελεύεις (command) με (me) τύπτεσθαι (to be struck)?”

³⁴ γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), πῶς (how) δύνασθε (are you able) ἀγαθὰ (good things) λαλεῖν (to speak), πονηροὶ (evil) ὄντες (being)? ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (the) περισσεύματος (abundance) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart), τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) λαλεῖ (speaks). ³⁵ ὁ (The) ἀγαθὸς (good) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) ἀγαθοῦ (good) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) ἀγαθά (good things); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πονηρὸς (evil) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) πονηροῦ (evil) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) πονηρά (evil things).

⁵ Πάντα (All) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them), ποιοῦσιν (they do) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) θεαθῆναι (to be seen) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (by men). πλατύνουσιν (They broaden) γὰρ (for) τὰ (the) φυλακτήρια (phylacteries) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) μεγαλύνουσιν (enlarge) τὰ (their) κράσπεδα (tassels).

²¹ ἔσωθεν (Within) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) οἱ (-) διαλογισμοὶ (thoughts) οἱ (-) κακοὶ (evil) ἐκπορεύονται (go forth), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries), ²² πλεονεξίαι (covetous desires), πονηρίαι (wickednesses), δόλος (deceit), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ὀφθαλμὸς (an eye) πονηρός (evil), βλασφημία (slander), ὑπερηφανία (pride), ἀφροσύνη (foolishness). ²³ πάντα (All) ταῦτα (these) τὰ (-) πονηρὰ (evils) ἔσωθεν (from within) ἐκπορεύεται (go forth), καὶ (and) κοινοῖ (they defile) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).”

¹² Ζῶν (Living is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἐνεργὴς (active), καὶ (and) τομώτερος (sharper) ὑπὲρ (than) πᾶσαν (any) μάχαιραν (sword) δίστομον (two-edged), καὶ (even) διϊκνούμενος (penetrating) ἄχρι (as far as) μερισμοῦ (the division) ψυχῆς (of soul) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἁρμῶν (of joints) τε (and) καὶ (also) μυελῶν (marrows), καὶ (and) κριτικὸς (able to judge) ἐνθυμήσεων (the thoughts) καὶ (and) ἐννοιῶν (intentions) καρδίας (of the heart). ¹³ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) κτίσις (creature) ἀφανὴς (hidden) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him); πάντα (all things) δὲ (however) γυμνὰ (are uncovered) καὶ (and) τετραχηλισμένα (laid bare) τοῖς (to the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πρὸς (to) ὃν (whom) ἡμῖν (is our) ὁ (-) λόγος (reckoning).

⁴⁷ οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (for) οἰκοδομεῖτε (you build) τὰ (the) μνημεῖα (tombs) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets), οἱ (-) δὲ (yet) πατέρες (the fathers) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀπέκτειναν (killed) αὐτούς (them). ⁴⁸ ἄρα (So) μάρτυρές (witnesses) ἐστε (you are), καὶ (and) συνευδοκεῖτε (consent) τοῖς (to the) ἔργοις (works) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you). ὅτι (For) αὐτοὶ (they) μὲν (indeed) ἀπέκτειναν (killed) αὐτοὺς (them); ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) οἰκοδομεῖτε (build their tombs).

²⁹ Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἐξὸν (it is permitted me) εἰπεῖν (to speak) μετὰ (with) παρρησίας (freedom) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) πατριάρχου (patriarch) Δαυὶδ (David), ὅτι (that) καὶ (both) ἐτελεύτησεν (he died) καὶ (and) ἐτάφη (was buried), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) μνῆμα (tomb) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us) ἄχρι (unto) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ταύτης (this).

³⁵ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taken) οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἔδειραν (they beat), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἐλιθοβόλησαν (they stoned). ³⁶ Πάλιν (Again) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) ἄλλους (other) δούλους (servants), πλείονας (more) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὡσαύτως (likewise).

³⁴ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) σοφοὺς (wise men) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes). ἐξ (Some of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποκτενεῖτε (you will kill) καὶ (and) σταυρώσετε (will crucify), καὶ (and some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) μαστιγώσετε (you will flog) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) διώξετε (will persecute) ἀπὸ (from) πόλεως (town) εἰς (to) πόλιν (town); ³⁵ ὅπως (so that) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) πᾶν (all the) αἷμα (blood) δίκαιον (righteous) ἐκχυννόμενον (being poured out) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ἅβελ (of Abel) τοῦ (the) δικαίου (righteous), ἕως (to) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah) υἱοῦ (son) Βαραχίου (of Berekiah), ὃν (whom) ἐφονεύσατε (you murdered) μεταξὺ (between) τοῦ (the) ναοῦ (temple) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar).

²² Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Ἐκ (Out of) τοῦ (the) στόματός (mouth) σου (of you) κρίνω (I will judge) σε (you), πονηρὲ (evil) δοῦλε (servant). ᾔδεις (You knew) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἄνθρωπος (a man) αὐστηρός (harsh) εἰμι (am), αἴρων (taking up) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔθηκα (I did lay down) καὶ (and) θερίζων (reaping) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔσπειρα (I did sow)?

⁵¹ Σκληροτράχηλοι (Stiff-necked) καὶ (and) ἀπερίτμητοι (uncircumcised) καρδίαις (in heart) καὶ (and) τοῖς (-) ὠσίν (ears), ὑμεῖς (you) ἀεὶ (always) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τῷ (-) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) ἀντιπίπτετε (resist); ὡς (as) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you). ⁵² τίνα (Which) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) οὐκ (not) ἐδίωξαν (did persecute) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you)? καὶ (And) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed) τοὺς (those) προκαταγγείλαντας (having foretold) περὶ (about) τῆς (the) ἐλεύσεως (coming) τοῦ (of the) Δικαίου (Righteous One), οὗ (of whom) νῦν (now) ὑμεῖς (you) προδόται (betrayers) καὶ (and) φονεῖς (murderers) ἐγένεσθε (have become),

¹⁶ κωλυόντων (hindering) ἡμᾶς (us) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) λαλῆσαι (to speak), ἵνα (that) σωθῶσιν (they might be saved), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) ἀναπληρῶσαι (to fill up) αὐτῶν (their) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins) πάντοτε (always). ἔφθασεν (Has come) δὲ (now) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτοὺς (them) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) εἰς (to the) τέλος (utmost).

⁷ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) πολλοὺς (many) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαίων (Sadducees) ἐρχομένους (coming) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) ‹αὐτοῦ› (of him), εἶπεν (he said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γεννήματα (Brood) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), τίς (who) ὑπέδειξεν (forewarned) ὑμῖν (you) φυγεῖν (to flee) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) μελλούσης (coming) ὀργῆς (wrath)?

³⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (then) ἤγγισεν (drew near) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (season) τῶν (of the) καρπῶν (fruits), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) γεωργοὺς (farmers) λαβεῖν (to receive) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) αὐτοῦ (of him). ³⁵ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taken) οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἔδειραν (they beat), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἐλιθοβόλησαν (they stoned).

⁷ Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) οὖν (therefore) τοῖς (to the) ἐκπορευομένοις (coming out) ὄχλοις (crowds) βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him), “Γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), τίς (who) ὑπέδειξεν (forewarned) ὑμῖν (you) φυγεῖν (to flee) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) μελλούσης (coming) ὀργῆς (wrath)?

³ Φοβοῦμαι (I am afraid) δὲ (however), μή (lest) πως (by any means) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ἐξηπάτησεν (deceived) Εὕαν (Eve) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) αὐτοῦ (of him), φθαρῇ (might be corrupted) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἁπλότητος (simplicity) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἁγνότητος (purity) τῆς (-) εἰς (in) ‹τὸν› (-) Χριστόν (Christ).

³ πῶς (how) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐκφευξόμεθα (will escape) τηλικαύτης (such a great) ἀμελήσαντες (having neglected) σωτηρίας (a salvation), ἥτις (which) ἀρχὴν (a commencement) λαβοῦσα (having received), λαλεῖσθαι (declared) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord), ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (those) ἀκουσάντων (having heard), εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐβεβαιώθη (it was confirmed),

²⁹ πόσῳ (How much) δοκεῖτε (think you) χείρονος (worse) ἀξιωθήσεται (will he deserve) τιμωρίας (punishment), ὁ (the one) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καταπατήσας (having trampled upon), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τῆς (of the) διαθήκης (covenant) κοινὸν (ordinary) ἡγησάμενος (having esteemed), ἐν (by) ᾧ (which) ἡγιάσθη (he was sanctified), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) χάριτος (of grace) ἐνυβρίσας (having insulted)?

²⁵ Βλέπετε (Take heed) μὴ (lest) παραιτήσησθε (you refuse) τὸν (the One) λαλοῦντα (speaking). εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἐκεῖνοι (they) οὐκ (not) ἐξέφυγον (escaped), ἐπὶ (on) γῆς (earth) παραιτησάμενοι (having refused) τὸν (the One) χρηματίζοντα (divinely instructing them), πολὺ (much) μᾶλλον (less) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (-) τὸν (the One) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανῶν (the heavens) ἀποστρεφόμενοι (turning away from),

⁹ καὶ (And) ἐβλήθη (was thrown out) ὁ (the) δράκων (dragon) ὁ (-) μέγας (great), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὁ (who) καλούμενος (is called) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ὁ (-) πλανῶν (deceiving) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (inhabited world) ὅλην (whole). ἐβλήθη (He was thrown down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐβλήθησαν (were thrown down).

¹⁶ Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send forth) ὑμᾶς (you) ὡς (as) πρόβατα (sheep) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) λύκων (of wolves); γίνεσθε (be you) οὖν (therefore) φρόνιμοι (shrewd) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) ὄφεις (serpents), καὶ (and) ἀκέραιοι (innocent) ὡς (as) αἱ (the) περιστεραί (doves). ¹⁷ Προσέχετε (Beware) δὲ (however) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); παραδώσουσιν (they will deliver) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) συνέδρια (courts), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them), μαστιγώσουσιν (they will flog) ὑμᾶς (you);

²³ Ὅταν (Whenever) δὲ (then) διώκωσιν (they persecute) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (one), φεύγετε (flee) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑτέραν (next). ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τελέσητε (shall you have completed) τὰς (the) πόλεις (cities) τοῦ (of) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) ἕως (until) ‹ἂν› (-) ἔλθῃ (be come) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (Man).

⁵² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), πᾶς (every) γραμματεὺς (scribe) μαθητευθεὶς (having been discipled) τῇ (into the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ὅμοιός (like) ἐστιν (is) ἀνθρώπῳ (a man), οἰκοδεσπότῃ (a master of a house), ὅστις (who) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) θησαυροῦ (treasure) αὐτοῦ (of him) καινὰ (things new) καὶ (and) παλαιά (old).”

¹⁹ πορευθέντες (Having gone) οὖν (therefore), μαθητεύσατε (disciple) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), βαπτίζοντες (baptizing) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit), ²⁰ διδάσκοντες (teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) τηρεῖν (to observe) πάντα (all things), ὅσα (whatever) ἐνετειλάμην (I commanded) ὑμῖν (you). καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰμι (am) πάσας (all) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days), ἕως (until) τῆς (the) συντελείας (completion) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age).”

⁴⁹ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) σοφία (Wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἶπεν (said), ‘Ἀποστελῶ (I will send) εἰς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) ἀποστόλους (apostles), καὶ (and) ἐξ (some of) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) καὶ (and) διώξουσιν (persecute),’ ⁵⁰ ἵνα (so that) ἐκζητηθῇ (might be charged) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets) τὸ (-) ἐκκεχυμένον (having been poured out) ἀπὸ (from) καταβολῆς (the foundation) κόσμου (of the world) ἀπὸ (against) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this), ⁵¹ ἀπὸ (from) αἵματος (the blood) Ἅβελ (of Abel) ἕως (to) αἵματος (the blood) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah), τοῦ (the one) ἀπολομένου (having perished) μεταξὺ (between) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) οἴκου (house). ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐκζητηθήσεται (it will be required) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this).

⁴⁷ καὶ (and) κηρυχθῆναι (to be proclaimed) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) μετάνοιαν (repentance) εἰς (and) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) εἰς (to) πάντα (all) τὰ (-) ἔθνη (nations), ἀρξάμενοι (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

² ἀποσυναγώγους (Out of the synagogues) ποιήσουσιν (they will put) ὑμᾶς (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ἵνα (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀποκτείνας (having killed) ὑμᾶς (you) δόξῃ (will think) λατρείαν (it is a service) προσφέρειν (to offer) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

²¹ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πάλιν (again), “Εἰρήνη (Peace) ὑμῖν (to you); καθὼς (as) ἀπέσταλκέν (has sent forth) με (me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) πέμπω (send) ὑμᾶς (you).”

⁸ ἀλλὰ (But) λήμψεσθε (you will receive) δύναμιν (power), ἐπελθόντος (having come) τοῦ (the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἔσεσθέ (you will be) μου (for Me) μάρτυρες (witnesses), ἔν (in) τε (both) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea), καὶ (and) Σαμαρείᾳ (Samaria), καὶ (and) ἕως (to) ἐσχάτου (the uttermost part) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth).”

⁵⁸ καὶ (and) ἐκβαλόντες (having cast him) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city), ἐλιθοβόλουν (they began to stone him). καὶ (And) οἱ (the) μάρτυρες (witnesses) ἀπέθεντο (laid aside) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτῶν (of them) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) νεανίου (of a young man) καλουμένου (named) Σαύλου (Saul). ⁵⁹ Καὶ (And as) ἐλιθοβόλουν (they were stoning) τὸν (-) Στέφανον (Stephen), ἐπικαλούμενον (he was calling out) καὶ (and) λέγοντα (saying), “Κύριε (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), δέξαι (receive) τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (spirit) μου (of me).”

¹ Ὁ (-) Δὲ (But) Σαῦλος (Saul), ἔτι (still) ἐμπνέων (breathing out) ἀπειλῆς (threats) καὶ (and) φόνου (murder) εἰς (toward) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), προσελθὼν (having gone) τῷ (to the) ἀρχιερεῖ (high priest), ² ᾐτήσατο (requested) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐπιστολὰς (letters) εἰς (in) Δαμασκὸν (Damascus) πρὸς (to) τὰς (the) συναγωγάς (synagogues), ὅπως (so that) ἐάν (if) τινας (any) εὕρῃ (he found) τῆς (of the) Ὁδοῦ (way), ὄντας (being) ἄνδρας (men) τε (both) καὶ (and) γυναῖκας (women), δεδεμένους (having bound), ἀγάγῃ (he might bring them) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

²⁷ Ἐν (In) ταύταις (these) δὲ (now) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days) κατῆλθον (came down) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) προφῆται (prophets) εἰς (to) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch).

² ἀνεῖλεν (He put to death) δὲ (then) Ἰάκωβον (James), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) Ἰωάννου (of John), μαχαίρῃ (with the sword).

¹ Ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) Ἀντιοχείᾳ (Antioch), κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) οὖσαν (being there) ἐκκλησίαν (church), προφῆται (prophets) καὶ (and) διδάσκαλοι (teachers), ὅ (-) τε (both) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) καὶ (and) Συμεὼν (Simeon) ὁ (who) καλούμενος (was called) Νίγερ (Niger), καὶ (and) Λούκιος (Lucius) ὁ (the) Κυρηναῖος (Cyrenian), Μαναήν (Manaen) τε (also)— Ἡρῴδου (Herod) τοῦ (the) τετραάρχου (tetrarch) σύντροφος (brought up with)— καὶ (and) Σαῦλος (Saul).

³² Ἰούδας (Judas) τε (both) καὶ (and) Σιλᾶς (Silas), καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (themselves) προφῆται (prophets) ὄντες (being), διὰ (by) λόγου (talk) πολλοῦ (much) παρεκάλεσαν (exhorted) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) καὶ (and) ἐπεστήριξαν (strengthened them).

¹⁹ Κἀγὼ (And I) εἶπον (said), ‘Κύριε (Lord), αὐτοὶ (they themselves) ἐπίστανται (know) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἤμην (was) φυλακίζων (imprisoning) καὶ (and) δέρων (beating) κατὰ (in each) τὰς (of those) συναγωγὰς (synagogues) τοὺς (those) πιστεύοντας (believing) ἐπὶ (on) σέ (You). ²⁰ καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐξεχύννετο (was poured out) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) Στεφάνου (of Stephen), τοῦ (the) μάρτυρός (witness) σου (of You), καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (I myself) ἤμην (was) ἐφεστὼς (standing by), καὶ (and) συνευδοκῶν (consenting), καὶ (and) φυλάσσων (watching over) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) τῶν (of those) ἀναιρούντων (killing) αὐτόν (him).’

⁶ Σοφίαν (Wisdom) δὲ (however) λαλοῦμεν (we speak) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) τελείοις (mature); σοφίαν (wisdom) δὲ (however), οὐ (not) τοῦ (the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (of this), οὐδὲ (nor) τῶν (of the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) τοῦ (the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (of this), τῶν (who) καταργουμένων (are coming to naught).

¹⁰ Κατὰ (According to) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τὴν (-) δοθεῖσάν (having been given) μοι (to me), ὡς (as) σοφὸς (a wise) ἀρχιτέκτων (master builder) θεμέλιον (the foundation) ἔθηκα (I have laid); ἄλλος (another) δὲ (however) ἐποικοδομεῖ (is building upon it). ἕκαστος (Each one) δὲ (however) βλεπέτω (let take heed) πῶς (how) ἐποικοδομεῖ (he builds upon it).

³ διὸ (Therefore) γνωρίζω (I make known) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) λαλῶν (speaking), λέγει (says) “Αναθεμα (Accursed is) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus),” καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) εἰπεῖν (to say), “Κυριος (Lord is) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus),” εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy). ⁴ Διαιρέσεις (Varieties) δὲ (now) χαρισμάτων (of gifts) εἰσίν (there are), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) αὐτὸ (the same) Πνεῦμα (Spirit); ⁵ καὶ (and) διαιρέσεις (varieties) διακονιῶν (of services) εἰσιν (there are), καὶ (but) ὁ (the) αὐτὸς (same) Κύριος (Lord); ⁶ καὶ (and) διαιρέσεις (varieties) ἐνεργημάτων (of workings) εἰσίν (there are), ὁ (the) δὲ (but) αὐτὸς (same) Θεός (God) ὁ (-) ἐνεργῶν (is working) τὰ (the) πάντα (all things) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (everyone). ⁷ Ἑκάστῳ (To each) δὲ (now) δίδοται (is given) ἡ (the) φανέρωσις (manifestation) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) πρὸς (for) τὸ (the) συμφέρον (common profiting). ⁸ ᾧ (To one) μὲν (truly) γὰρ (for) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) δίδοται (is given) λόγος (a word) σοφίας (of wisdom), ἄλλῳ (to another) δὲ (now) λόγος (a word) γνώσεως (of knowledge), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), ⁹ ἑτέρῳ (and to a different one), πίστις (faith) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) Πνεύματι (Spirit), ἄλλῳ (to another) δὲ (now) χαρίσματα (gifts) ἰαμάτων (of healing) ἐν (in) τῷ (that) ἑνὶ (one) Πνεύματι (Spirit), ¹⁰ ἄλλῳ (to another) δὲ (now) ἐνεργήματα (working) δυνάμεων (of miracles), ἄλλῳ (to another) δὲ (now) προφητεία (prophecy), ἄλλῳ (to another) δὲ (now) διακρίσεις (distinguishing) πνευμάτων (of spirits), ἑτέρῳ (and to a different one) γένη (various kinds) γλωσσῶν (of tongues), ἄλλῳ (to another) δὲ (now) ἑρμηνεία (interpretation) γλωσσῶν (of tongues). ¹¹ πάντα (All) δὲ (now) ταῦτα (these things) ἐνεργεῖ (works) τὸ (the) ἓν (one) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), διαιροῦν (apportioning) ἰδίᾳ (individually) ἑκάστῳ (to each) καθὼς (as) βούλεται (He wills).

²⁴ Ὑπὸ (From) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews) πεντάκις (five times) τεσσεράκοντα (forty lashes) παρὰ (minus) μίαν (one) ἔλαβον (I received). ²⁵ τρὶς (Three times) ἐραβδίσθην (I was beaten with rods), ἅπαξ (once) ἐλιθάσθην (I was stoned), τρὶς (three times) ἐναυάγησα (I was shipwrecked), νυχθήμερον (a night and a day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) βυθῷ (deep sea) πεποίηκα (I have passed);

⁸ διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ἀναβὰς (Having ascended) εἰς (on) ὕψος (high), ᾐχμαλώτευσεν (He led captive) αἰχμαλωσίαν (captivity), (καὶ) (and) ἔδωκεν (gave) δόματα (gifts) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men).” ⁹ Τὸ (-) δὲ (And), “Ἀνέβη (He ascended),” τί (what) ἐστιν (is) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) κατέβη (He descended) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) κατώτερα (lower) μέρη (regions) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth)? ¹⁰ ὁ (The One) καταβὰς (having descended), αὐτός (the same) ἐστιν (is) καὶ (also) ὁ (one) ἀναβὰς (having ascended) ὑπεράνω (above) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἵνα (so that) πληρώσῃ (He might fill) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἔδωκεν (gave) τοὺς (some) μὲν (indeed) ἀποστόλους (to be apostles), τοὺς (some) δὲ (now) προφήτας (prophets), τοὺς (some) δὲ (now) εὐαγγελιστάς (evangelists), τοὺς (some) δὲ (now) ποιμένας (shepherds) καὶ (and) διδασκάλους (teachers), ¹² πρὸς (toward) τὸν (the) καταρτισμὸν (perfecting) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints), εἰς (for) ἔργον (the work) διακονίας (of ministry), εἰς (for) οἰκοδομὴν (the building up) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

²⁸ ὃν (whom) ἡμεῖς (we) καταγγέλλομεν (preach), νουθετοῦντες (admonishing) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) καὶ (and) διδάσκοντες (teaching) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (wisdom), ἵνα (so that) παραστήσωμεν (we may present) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man) τέλειον (perfect) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ).

³⁷ Ἐλιθάσθησαν (They were stoned), ἐπρίσθησαν (they were sawed in two), ἐν (by) φόνῳ (slaughter) μαχαίρης (of the sword) ἀπέθανον (they were killed); περιῆλθον (they wandered) ἐν (in) μηλωταῖς (sheepskins), ἐν (in) αἰγείοις (goats’) δέρμασιν (skins), ὑστερούμενοι (being destitute), θλιβόμενοι (being oppressed), κακουχούμενοι (being mistreated);

¹⁰ καὶ (And) οἱ (those) κατοικοῦντες (dwelling) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) χαίρουσιν (rejoice) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτοῖς (them) καὶ (and) εὐφραίνονται (make merry), καὶ (and) δῶρα (gifts) πέμψουσιν (will send) ἀλλήλοις (to one another), ὅτι (because) οὗτοι (these) οἱ (-) δύο (two) προφῆται (prophets) ἐβασάνισαν (have tormented) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

⁴ Πίστει (By faith) πλείονα (a more excellent) θυσίαν (sacrifice) Ἅβελ (Abel) παρὰ (than) Κάϊν (Cain) προσήνεγκεν (offered) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), δι’ (through) ἧς (which) ἐμαρτυρήθη (he was testified) εἶναι (to be) δίκαιος (righteous), μαρτυροῦντος (bearing witness) ἐπὶ (to) τοῖς (the) δώροις (gifts) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God); καὶ (and) δι’ (through) αὐτῆς (it), ἀποθανὼν (having died), ἔτι (still) λαλεῖ (he speaks).

²⁴ καὶ (and) διαθήκης (of a covenant) νέας (new) μεσίτῃ (the mediator), Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), καὶ (and) αἵματι (to the blood) ῥαντισμοῦ (of sprinkling) κρεῖττον (better things) λαλοῦντι (speaking) παρὰ (than) τὸν (that of) Ἅβελ (Abel).

¹¹ Ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγγελία (message) ἣν (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) ἀλλήλους (one another), ¹² οὐ (not) καθὼς (as) Κάϊν (Cain), ἐκ (who of) τοῦ (the) πονηροῦ (evil one) ἦν (was) καὶ (and) ἔσφαξεν (slew) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) χάριν (because of) τίνος (what) ἔσφαξεν (he slayed) αὐτόν (him)? ὅτι (Because) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him) πονηρὰ (evil) ἦν (were), τὰ (those) δὲ (however) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), δίκαια (righteous).

²⁴ Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (her) αἷμα (the blood) προφητῶν (of prophets) καὶ (and) ἁγίων (of saints) εὑρέθη (was found), καὶ (and) πάντων (of all) τῶν (those) ἐσφαγμένων (having been slain) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

³⁴ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθῃ (will have passed away) ἡ (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) πάντα (all) ταῦτα (these things) γένηται (shall have taken place).

³⁰ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθῃ (will have passed away) ἡ (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this) μέχρις (until) οὗ (that) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) γένηται (shall have taken place). ³¹ ὁ (The) οὐρανὸς (heaven) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) παρελεύσονται (will pass away), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) λόγοι (the words) μου (of Me) οὐ (in no way) ‹μὴ› (not) παρελεύσονται (will pass away).

³² ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθῃ (will have passed away) ἡ (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) πάντα (all these things) γένηται (shall have taken place). ³³ ὁ (The) οὐρανὸς (heaven) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) παρελεύσονται (will pass away), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) λόγοι (the words) μου (of Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρελεύσονται (will pass away).

¹² χαίρετε (Rejoice) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (exult), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολὺς (is great) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) τοὺς (-) πρὸ (before) ὑμῶν (you).

³ καὶ (And) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) καλέσαι (to call) τοὺς (those) κεκλημένους (having been invited) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤθελον (they were willing) ἐλθεῖν (to come).

⁶ οἱ (-) δὲ (And) λοιποὶ (the rest), κρατήσαντες (having laid hold of) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὕβρισαν (mistreated) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτειναν (killed them).

³⁰ καὶ (and) λέγετε (you say), ‘Εἰ (If) ἤμεθα (we had lived) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἤμεθα (we would have been) αὐτῶν (with them) κοινωνοὶ (partakers) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets).’

³ καὶ (But) λαβόντες (having taken) αὐτὸν (him), ἔδειραν (they beat him) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλαν (sent him away) κενόν (empty-handed). ⁴ Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ἄλλον (another) δοῦλον (servant), κἀκεῖνον (and him) ἐκεφαλίωσαν (they struck on the head) καὶ (and) ἠτίμασαν (treated shamefully). ⁵ καὶ (And) ἄλλον (another) ἀπέστειλεν (He sent), κἀκεῖνον (and him) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed); καὶ (also) πολλοὺς (many) ἄλλους (others), οὓς (some) μὲν (indeed) δέροντες (beating), οὓς (some) δὲ (then) ἀποκτέννοντες (killing). ⁶ Ἔτι (Yet) ἕνα (one) εἶχεν (having) υἱὸν (son) ἀγαπητόν (beloved), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) αὐτὸν (him) ἔσχατον (last) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), ‘Ἐντραπήσονται (They will have respect for) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me).’

³⁴ Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἡ (-) ἀποκτείνουσα (killing) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets), καὶ (and) λιθοβολοῦσα (stoning) τοὺς (those) ἀπεσταλμένους (having been sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτήν (her), ποσάκις (how often) ἠθέλησα (I have wanted) ἐπισυνάξαι (to gather) τὰ (those) τέκνα (children) σου (of you), ὃν (that) τρόπον (way) ὄρνις (a hen gathers) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῆς (her) νοσσιὰν (brood) ὑπὸ (under) τὰς (the) πτέρυγας (wings), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠθελήσατε (you were willing). ³⁵ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀφίεται (is left) ὑμῖν (to you) ὁ (the) οἶκος (house) ὑμῶν (of you). λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητέ (shall you see) με (Me) ἕως (until) ἥξει (the time comes) ὅτε (when) εἴπητε (you say), ‘Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).’”

¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τὸν (the) δοῦλον (servant) αὐτοῦ (of him) τῇ (at the) ὥρᾳ (hour) τοῦ (of the) δείπνου (supper) εἰπεῖν (to say) τοῖς (to those) κεκλημένοις (having been invited), ‘Ἔρχεσθε (Come), ὅτι (for) ἤδη (now) ἕτοιμά (ready) ἐστιν (it is).’ ¹⁸ Καὶ (And) ἤρξαντο (began) ἀπὸ (with) μιᾶς (one voice) πάντες (all) παραιτεῖσθαι (to excuse themselves). ὁ (The) πρῶτος (first) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Ἀγρὸν (A field) ἠγόρασα (I have bought), καὶ (and) ἔχω (I have) ἀνάγκην (need) ἐξελθὼν (going out) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτόν (it); ἐρωτῶ (I beg of) σε (you), ἔχε (hold) με (me) παρῃτημένον (excused).’ ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ἕτερος (another) εἶπεν (said), ‘Ζεύγη (Yoke) βοῶν (of oxen) ἠγόρασα (I have bought) πέντε (five), καὶ (and) πορεύομαι (I am going) δοκιμάσαι (to prove) αὐτά (them); ἐρωτῶ (I beg of) σε (you) ἔχε (hold) με (me) παρῃτημένον (excused).’ ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἕτερος (another) εἶπεν (said), ‘Γυναῖκα (A wife) ἔγημα (I have married), καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) οὐ (not) δύναμαι (I am able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).’

²⁸ Ὠργίσθη (He was angry) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (was willing) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in). ὁ (-) δὲ (And) πατὴρ (the father) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐξελθὼν (having gone), παρεκάλει (was begging) αὐτόν (him).

¹⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) πολῖται (the citizens) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐμίσουν (hated) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) πρεσβείαν (a delegation) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτοῦ (him), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Οὐ (Not) θέλομεν (we are willing for) τοῦτον (this man) βασιλεῦσαι (to reign) ἐφ’ (over) ἡμᾶς (us).’ ¹⁵ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) ἐπανελθεῖν (returning) αὐτὸν (of him), λαβόντα (having received) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom), καὶ (that) εἶπεν (he directed) φωνηθῆναι (to be called) αὐτῷ (to him) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) τούτους (these) οἷς (to whom) δεδώκει (he had given) τὸ (the) ἀργύριον (money), ἵνα (in order that) γνοῖ (he might know) 〈τίς〉 (each) τί (what) διεπραγματεύσαντο (had gained by trading). ¹⁶ Παρεγένετο (Came up) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) πρῶτος (first), λέγων (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), ἡ (the) μνᾶ (mina) σου (of you), δέκα (ten) προσηργάσατο (has produced) μνᾶς (more minas).’ ¹⁷ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Εὖγε (Well done), ἀγαθὲ (good) δοῦλε (servant)! ὅτι (Because) ἐν (in) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little), πιστὸς (faithful) ἐγένου (you were), ἴσθι (to be) ἐξουσίαν (having authority) ἔχων (you are) ἐπάνω (over) δέκα (ten) πόλεων (cities).’ ¹⁸ Καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (the) δεύτερος (second), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἡ (The) μνᾶ (mina) σου (of you), κύριε (Lord), ἐποίησεν (has made) πέντε (five) μνᾶς (minas).’ ¹⁹ Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τούτῳ (to this one), ‘Καὶ (And) σὺ (you) ἐπάνω (over) γίνου (are to be) πέντε (five) πόλεων (cities).’ ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) ἕτερος (another) ἦλθεν (came), λέγων (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), ἰδοὺ (behold) ἡ (the) μνᾶ (mina) σου (of you), ἣν (which) εἶχον (I kept) ἀποκειμένην (lying away) ἐν (in) σουδαρίῳ (a piece of cloth). ²¹ ἐφοβούμην (I was afraid) γάρ (for) σε (of you), ὅτι (because) ἄνθρωπος (a man) αὐστηρὸς (harsh) εἶ (you are). αἴρεις (You take up) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔθηκας (you did lay down), καὶ (and) θερίζεις (you reap) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔσπειρας (you did sow).’ ²² Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Ἐκ (Out of) τοῦ (the) στόματός (mouth) σου (of you) κρίνω (I will judge) σε (you), πονηρὲ (evil) δοῦλε (servant). ᾔδεις (You knew) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἄνθρωπος (a man) αὐστηρός (harsh) εἰμι (am), αἴρων (taking up) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔθηκα (I did lay down) καὶ (and) θερίζων (reaping) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔσπειρα (I did sow)? ²³ καὶ (Then) διὰ (because of) τί (why) οὐκ (not) ἔδωκάς (did you give) μου (of me) τὸ (the) ἀργύριον (money) ἐπὶ (to) τράπεζαν (the bank), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐλθὼν (having come), σὺν (with) τόκῳ (interest) ἂν (-) αὐτὸ (it) ἔπραξα (might have collected)?’ ²⁴ Καὶ (And) τοῖς (to those) παρεστῶσιν (standing by) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἄρατε (Take) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) τὴν (the) μνᾶν (mina), καὶ (and) δότε (give it) τῷ (to the one) τὰς (the) δέκα (ten) μνᾶς (minas) ἔχοντι (having).’ ²⁵ Καὶ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Κύριε (Master), ἔχει (he has) δέκα (ten) μνᾶς (minas).’ ²⁶ ‘Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) ἔχοντι (having) δοθήσεται (will be given); ἀπὸ (from) δὲ (however) τοῦ (the one) μὴ (not) ἔχοντος (having), καὶ (even) ὃ (that which) ἔχει (he has) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away). ²⁷ πλὴν (Furthermore), τοὺς (the) ἐχθρούς (enemies) μου (of mine) τούτους (these), τοὺς (those) μὴ (not) θελήσαντάς (having been willing for) με (me) βασιλεῦσαι (to reign) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτοὺς (them), ἀγάγετε (bring) ὧδε (here) καὶ (and) κατασφάξατε (slay) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔμπροσθέν (before) μου (me).’” ²⁸ Καὶ (And) εἰπὼν (having said) ταῦτα (these things) ἐπορεύετο (He went on) ἔμπροσθεν (ahead), ἀναβαίνων (going up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem). ²⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ὡς (as) ἤγγισεν (He drew near) εἰς (to) Βηθφαγὴ (Bethphage) καὶ (and) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), πρὸς (toward) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mount) τὸ (-) καλούμενον (called) Ἐλαιῶν (Olivet), ἀπέστειλεν (He sent) δύο (two) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), ³⁰ λέγων (saying), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κατέναντι (ahead) κώμην (village), ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) εἰσπορευόμενοι (entering) εὑρήσετε (you will find) πῶλον (a colt) δεδεμένον (having been tied), ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (which) οὐδεὶς (no one) πώποτε (ever yet) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐκάθισεν (has sat); καὶ (and) λύσαντες (having untied) αὐτὸν (it), ἀγάγετε (bring it). ³¹ καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐρωτᾷ (asks), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) λύετε (do you untie it)?’ οὕτως (thus) ἐρεῖτε (will you say), ‘Ὅτι (Because) Ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτοῦ (of it) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has).’” ³² Ἀπελθόντες (Having departed) δὲ (then), οἱ (those) ἀπεσταλμένοι (having been sent) εὗρον (found it) καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (He had said) αὐτοῖς (to them). ³³ λυόντων (On untying) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (of them) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) κύριοι (masters) αὐτοῦ (of it) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τί (Why) λύετε (untie you) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt)?” ³⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) ὅτι (-), “Ὁ (The) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτοῦ (of it) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has).” ³⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤγαγον (they led) αὐτὸν (it) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐπιρίψαντες (having cast) αὐτῶν (their) τὰ (-) ἱμάτια (garments) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), ἐπεβίβασαν (they put on it) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ³⁶ Πορευομένου (Going) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὑπεστρώννυον (they were spreading) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) ἑαυτῶν (of them) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road). ³⁷ ἐγγίζοντος (Drawing near) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἤδη (already) πρὸς (at) τῇ (the) καταβάσει (descent) τοῦ (of the) ὄρους (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), ἤρξαντο (began) ἅπαν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), χαίροντες (rejoicing), αἰνεῖν (to praise) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) περὶ (for) πασῶν (all) ὧν (which) εἶδον (they had seen) δυνάμεων (the mighty works), ³⁸ λέγοντες (saying): “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ὁ (-) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).” “Ἐν (In) οὐρανῷ (heaven) εἰρήνη (peace), καὶ (and) δόξα (glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest).” ³⁹ Καί (And) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) εἶπαν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ἐπιτίμησον (rebuke) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) σου (of You).” ⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ‹ὅτι› (that) ἐὰν (if) οὗτοι (these) σιωπήσουσιν (will be silent), οἱ (the) λίθοι (stones) κράξουσιν (will cry out).” ⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ὡς (as) ἤγγισεν (He drew near), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἔκλαυσεν (He wept) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτήν (it), ⁴² λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Εἰ (If) ἔγνως (you had known) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ταύτῃ (this), καὶ (even) σὺ (you), τὰ (the things) πρὸς (for) εἰρήνην (peace)! νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ἐκρύβη (they are hidden) ἀπὸ (from) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) σου (of you). ⁴³ ὅτι (For) ἥξουσιν (will come) ἡμέραι (days) ἐπὶ (upon) σὲ (you) καὶ (that) παρεμβαλοῦσιν (will cast around) οἱ (the) ἐχθροί (enemies) σου (of you) χάρακά (a barricade) σοι (you); καὶ (and) περικυκλώσουσίν (they will surround) σε (you) καὶ (and) συνέξουσίν (will hem in) σε (you) πάντοθεν (on every side), ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ἐδαφιοῦσίν (will level to the ground) σε (you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you) ἐν (within) σοί (you), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀφήσουσιν (will leave) λίθον (a stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (a stone) ἐν (within) σοί (you), ἀνθ’ (in place of) ὧν (which) οὐκ (not) ἔγνως (you knew) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (season) τῆς (the) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation) σου (of you).”

¹¹ Καὶ (And) προσέθετο (he proceeded) ἕτερον (another) πέμψαι (to send) δοῦλον (a servant); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) κἀκεῖνον (him) δείραντες (having beaten) καὶ (and) ἀτιμάσαντες (having dishonored), ἐξαπέστειλαν (they sent away) κενόν (empty-handed). ¹² Καὶ (And) προσέθετο (he proceeded) τρίτον (a third) πέμψαι (to send); οἱ (-) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τοῦτον (him) τραυματίσαντες (having wounded), ἐξέβαλον (they cast out). ¹³ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard), ‘Τί (What) ποιήσω (shall I do)? πέμψω (I will send) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me), τὸν (the) ἀγαπητόν (beloved); ἴσως (perhaps) τοῦτον (him) ἐντραπήσονται (they will respect).’ ¹⁴ Ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (him), οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) διελογίζοντο (began reasoning) πρὸς (among) ἀλλήλους (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) κληρονόμος (heir); ἀποκτείνωμεν (let us kill) αὐτόν (him), ἵνα (so that) ἡμῶν (ours) γένηται (might become) ἡ (the) κληρονομία (inheritance).’

¹⁵ τῶν (who) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἀποκτεινάντων (having killed), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) τοὺς (their own) προφήτας (prophets), καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκδιωξάντων (having driven out), καὶ (and) Θεῷ (God) μὴ (not) ἀρεσκόντων (pleasing), καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐναντίων (who are set against),

⁷ Καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) τελέσωσιν (they shall have completed) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) αὐτῶν (of them), τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast) τὸ (-) ἀναβαῖνον (coming up) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) ἀβύσσου (abyss) ποιήσει (will make) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them) πόλεμον (war), καὶ (and) νικήσει (will overcome) αὐτοὺς (them), καὶ (and) ἀποκτενεῖ (will kill) αὐτούς (them). ⁸ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπὶ (will be upon) τῆς (the) πλατείας (street) τῆς (of) πόλεως (city) τῆς (the) μεγάλης (great), ἥτις (which) καλεῖται (is called) πνευματικῶς (figuratively) Σόδομα (Sodom) καὶ (and) Αἴγυπτος (Egypt), ὅπου (where) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐσταυρώθη (was crucified).

⁶ Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (woman) μεθύουσαν (being drunk) ἐκ (with) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints), καὶ (and) ἐκ (with) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τῶν (of the) μαρτύρων (witnesses) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus). Καὶ (And) ἐθαύμασα (I marveled), ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὴν (her), θαῦμα (with wonder) μέγα (great).

² ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐ (Not) βλέπετε (do you see) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all)? ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (none) μὴ (not even) ἀφεθῇ (shall be left) ὧδε (here) λίθος (stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (stone), ὃς (which) οὐ (not) καταλυθήσεται (will be thrown down).”

¹⁴ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἴδητε (you see) τὸ (the) βδέλυγμα (abomination) τῆς (of the) ἐρημώσεως (desolation) ἑστηκότα (standing) ὅπου (where) οὐ (not) δεῖ (it should)— ὁ (the one) ἀναγινώσκων (reading), νοείτω (let him understand)— τότε (then) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea), φευγέτωσαν (let them flee) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὄρη (mountains),

³⁵ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀφίεται (is left) ὑμῖν (to you) ὁ (the) οἶκος (house) ὑμῶν (of you). λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητέ (shall you see) με (Me) ἕως (until) ἥξει (the time comes) ὅτε (when) εἴπητε (you say), ‘Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).’”

⁶ “Ταῦτα (As to these things) ἃ (which) θεωρεῖτε (you are beholding), ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἡμέραι (the days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) οὐκ (not) ἀφεθήσεται (will be left) λίθος (stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθῳ (stone) ὃς (which) οὐ (not) καταλυθήσεται (will be thrown down).”

²⁰ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἴδητε (you see) κυκλουμένην (being encircled) ὑπὸ (by) στρατοπέδων (encampments) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), τότε (then) γνῶτε (know) ὅτι (that) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near) ἡ (the) ἐρήμωσις (desolation) αὐτῆς (of her).

²⁴ καὶ (And) πεσοῦνται (they will fall) στόματι (by the edge) μαχαίρης (of the sword), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται (will be led captive) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations); πάντα (all) καὶ (and) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἔσται (will be) πατουμένη (trodden down) ὑπὸ (by) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) πληρωθῶσιν (are fulfilled) καιροὶ (the times) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles).

¹³ Ἔστησάν (They set) τε (also) μάρτυρας (witnesses) ψευδεῖς (false), λέγοντας (saying), “Ὁ (The) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), οὐ (not) παύεται (does stop) λαλῶν (speaking) ῥήματα (words) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τοῦ (-) ἁγίου (holy) [τούτου] (this) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law); ¹⁴ ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῦ (him) λέγοντος (saying) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὁ (of) Ναζωραῖος (Nazareth) οὗτος (this) καταλύσει (will destroy) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τοῦτον (this) καὶ (and) ἀλλάξει (will change) τὰ (the) ἔθη (customs) ἃ (that) παρέδωκεν (delivered) ἡμῖν (to us) Μωϋσῆς (Moses).”

⁹ Οἱ (The) δὲ (now) ὄχλοι (crowds) οἱ (-) προάγοντες (going before) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out), λέγοντες (saying): “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!”

²⁶ καὶ (And) ἦν (it was) αὐτῷ (to him) κεχρηματισμένον (divinely revealed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Ἁγίου (Holy) μὴ (not) ἰδεῖν (to see) θάνατον (death) πρὶν (before) ἢ (that) ἂν (-) ἴδῃ (he should see) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) Κυρίου (of the Lord). ²⁷ καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (he came) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple); καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the time when) εἰσαγαγεῖν (were bringing in) τοὺς (the) γονεῖς (parents) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), τοῦ (the thing) ποιῆσαι (were doing) αὐτοὺς (they) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) εἰθισμένον (having become customary) τοῦ (by the) νόμου (law) περὶ (for) αὐτοῦ (Him), ²⁸ καὶ (then) αὐτὸς (he) ἐδέξατο (received) αὐτὸ (Him) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) ἀγκάλας (arms), καὶ (and) εὐλόγησεν (blessed) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said): ²⁹ “Νῦν (Now) ἀπολύεις (You dismiss) τὸν (the) δοῦλόν (servant) σου (of You), Δέσποτα (Lord), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ῥῆμά (word) σου (of You), ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace); ³⁰ ὅτι (for) εἶδον (have seen) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοί (eyes) μου (of me) τὸ (the) σωτήριόν (salvation) σου (of You),

²² Πάντα (All things) μοι (to Me) παρεδόθη (have been delivered) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me). καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) γινώσκει (knows) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father); καὶ (and) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) ἐὰν (if) βούληται (might resolve) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal Him).” ²³ Καὶ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), εἶπεν (He said), “Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) οἱ (-) βλέποντες (seeing) ἃ (what) βλέπετε (you see)!

²² Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητάς (disciples), “Ἐλεύσονται (Will come) ἡμέραι (days) ὅτε (when) ἐπιθυμήσετε (you will desire) μίαν (one) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἰδεῖν (to see), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ὄψεσθε (you will see it).

²¹ Εἶπεν (He said) οὖν (then) πάλιν (again) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (am going away) καὶ (and) ζητήσετέ (you will seek) με (Me), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἁμαρτίᾳ (sin) ὑμῶν (of you), ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die); ὅπου (where) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (go), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).”

²⁴ εἶπον (I said) οὖν (therefore) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you); ἐὰν (if) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (you believe) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you).”

⁵⁶ Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) ὑμῶν (of you) ἠγαλλιάσατο (rejoiced) ἵνα (in that) ἴδῃ (he should see) τὴν (-) ἡμέραν (day) τὴν (-) ἐμήν (My), καὶ (and) εἶδεν (he saw) καὶ (and) ἐχάρη (rejoiced).”

⁹ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Τοσούτῳ* (So long) χρόνῳ* (a time) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰμι (am I), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωκάς (you have known) με (Me), Φίλιππε (Philip)? ὁ (The one) ἑωρακὼς (having seen) ἐμὲ (Me) ἑώρακεν (has seen) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); πῶς (how) σὺ (you) λέγεις (say), ‘Δεῖξον (Show) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father)?’

¹⁹ ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) με (Me) οὐκέτι (no more) θεωρεῖ (sees), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) θεωρεῖτέ (see) με (Me); ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) ζῶ (live), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ζήσετε (will live).

²⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) θέλω (I want) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τὸ (of the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦτο (this), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἦτε (you may be) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) φρόνιμοι (wise), ὅτι (that) πώρωσις (a hardening) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel) γέγονεν (has happened), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) εἰσέλθῃ (may come in);

¹⁴ Ἀλλὰ (But) ἐπωρώθη (were hardened) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) αὐτῶν (of them). ἄχρι (Until) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) σήμερον (present) ἡμέρας (day), τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) κάλυμμα (veil) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) ἀναγνώσει (reading) τῆς (of the) παλαιᾶς (old) διαθήκης (covenant) μένει (remains), μὴ (not) ἀνακαλυπτόμενον (being lifted), ὅτι (which) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) καταργεῖται (is being removed). ¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (But) ἕως (unto) σήμερον (this day), ἡνίκα (when) ἂν (-) ἀναγινώσκηται (shall be read) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), κάλυμμα (a veil) ἐπὶ (over) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) αὐτῶν (of them) κεῖται (lies). ¹⁶ ἡνίκα (Whenever) δὲ (however) ἐὰν (if) ἐπιστρέψῃ (one shall have turned) πρὸς (to) Κύριον (the Lord), περιαιρεῖται (is taken away) τὸ (the) κάλυμμα (veil). ¹⁷ Ὁ (The) δὲ (now) Κύριος (Lord) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμά (Spirit) ἐστιν (is); οὗ (where) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord is), ἐλευθερία (there is freedom). ¹⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (now) πάντες (all), ἀνακεκαλυμμένῳ (having been unveiled) προσώπῳ (in face), τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) Κυρίου (of the Lord) κατοπτριζόμενοι (beholding as in a mirror), τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) εἰκόνα (image) μεταμορφούμεθα (are being transformed into), ἀπὸ (from) δόξης (glory) εἰς (to) δόξαν (glory), καθάπερ (even as) ἀπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord), Πνεύματος (the Spirit).
