²⁸ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) βλέπων (looking upon) γυναῖκα (a woman) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) ἐπιθυμῆσαι (to lust after) αὐτὴν (her) ἤδη (already) ἐμοίχευσεν (has committed adultery with) αὐτὴν (her) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him).

³² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀπολύων (divorcing) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρεκτὸς (except) λόγου (on account) πορνείας (of sexual immorality), ποιεῖ (causes) αὐτὴν (her) μοιχευθῆναι (to commit adultery). καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) ἀπολελυμένην (her having been divorced) γαμήσῃ (shall marry), μοιχᾶται (commits adultery).

⁴⁴ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (those) διωκόντων (persecuting) ὑμᾶς (you),

¹ Τότε (Then) προσέρχονται (come) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes), λέγοντες (saying), ² “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) παραβαίνουσιν (break) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders)? οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) νίπτονται (they wash) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ‹αὐτῶν› (of them) ὅταν (when) ἄρτον (bread) ἐσθίωσιν (they shall eat).” ³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) παραβαίνετε (break) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)? ⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (commanded), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother)’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ⁵ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), “Δῶρον (It is a gift), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),” ⁶ οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) 〈ἢ (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ〉 (of himself).’ καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)! ⁷ ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah), λέγων (saying), ⁸ ‘Ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) οὗτος (this), τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (it honors); Ἡ (the) δὲ (however) καρδία (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me); ⁹ Μάτην (in vain) δὲ (then) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me), Διδάσκοντες (teaching as) διδασκαλίας (doctrines) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).’”

²³ Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντος (having come) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) διδάσκοντι (teaching), οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐν (By) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (are You doing)? καὶ (And) τίς (who) σοι (to You) ἔδωκεν (gave) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this)?” ²⁴ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐρωτήσω (Will ask) ὑμᾶς (you) κἀγὼ (I also) λόγον (thing) ἕνα (one), ὃν (which) ἐὰν (if) εἴπητέ (you tell) μοι (Me), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐρῶ (will say) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do). ²⁵ τὸ (The) βάπτισμα (baptism) τὸ (of) Ἰωάννου (John), πόθεν (from where) ἦν (was it)? ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἢ (or) ἐξ (from) ἀνθρώπων (men)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) διελογίζοντο (they were reasoning) ἐν (with) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven),’ ἐρεῖ (He will say) ἡμῖν (to us), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὖν (then) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (did you believe) αὐτῷ (him)?’ ²⁶ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men),’ φοβούμεθα (we fear) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) ἔχουσιν (hold) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John).” ²⁷ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εἶπαν (they said), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (do we know).” Ἔφη (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (also) αὐτός (He), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do).

² λέγων (saying), “Ἐπὶ (On) τῆς (-) Μωϋσέως (Moses’) καθέδρας (seat) ἐκάθισαν (have sat down) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees). ³ πάντα (All things) οὖν (therefore), ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) εἴπωσιν (they might tell) ὑμῖν (you), ποιήσατε (keep) καὶ (and) τηρεῖτε (observe). κατὰ (After) δὲ (however) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτῶν (of them), μὴ (not) ποιεῖτε (do). λέγουσιν (They speak) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) ποιοῦσιν (act). ⁴ δεσμεύουσιν (They tie up) δὲ (-) φορτία (burdens) βαρέα (heavy) [καὶ (and) δυσβάστακτα] (hard to bear) καὶ (and) ἐπιτιθέασιν (lay them) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) ὤμους (shoulders) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men); αὐτοὶ (themselves) δὲ (however), τῷ (with) δακτύλῳ (finger) αὐτῶν (of them), οὐ (not) θέλουσιν (are they willing) κινῆσαι (to move) αὐτά (them). ⁵ Πάντα (All) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them), ποιοῦσιν (they do) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) θεαθῆναι (to be seen) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (by men). πλατύνουσιν (They broaden) γὰρ (for) τὰ (the) φυλακτήρια (phylacteries) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) μεγαλύνουσιν (enlarge) τὰ (their) κράσπεδα (tassels). ⁶ φιλοῦσιν (They love) δὲ (now) τὴν (the) πρωτοκλισίαν (chief place) ἐν (at) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (banquets), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues),

¹⁵ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) περιάγετε (you traverse) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ξηρὰν (dry land) ποιῆσαι (to make) ἕνα (one) προσήλυτον (convert), καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) γένηται (he has become so), ποιεῖτε (you make) αὐτὸν (him) υἱὸν (a son) γεέννης (of hell) διπλότερον (twofold more) ὑμῶν (than yourselves). ¹⁶ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁδηγοὶ (guides) τυφλοὶ (blind), οἱ (those) λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple), οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (it is); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) χρυσῷ (gold) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) ὀφείλει (is bound by his oath).’ ¹⁷ μωροὶ (Foolish) καὶ (and) τυφλοί (blind)! τίς (Which) γὰρ (for) μείζων (greater) ἐστίν (is), ὁ (the) χρυσὸς (gold), ἢ (or) ὁ (the) ναὸς (temple) ὁ (-) ἁγιάσας (having sanctified) τὸν (the) χρυσόν (gold)? ¹⁸ καί (And you say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar), οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (it is); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) δώρῳ (gift) τῷ (that is) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it), ὀφείλει (he is bound by his oath).’ ¹⁹ τυφλοί (You blind men)! τί (Which) γὰρ (for) μεῖζον (is greater), τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift), ἢ (or) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar) τὸ (-) ἁγιάζον (sanctifying) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift)? ²⁰ ὁ (The one) οὖν (therefore) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) αὐτῷ (it) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) πᾶσι (all things) τοῖς (that are) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it). ²¹ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) αὐτῷ (it) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the One) κατοικοῦντι (dwelling) αὐτόν (in it). ²² καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θρόνῳ (throne) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the One) καθημένῳ (sitting) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it). ²³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) ἀποδεκατοῦτε (you pay tithes of) τὸ (-) ἡδύοσμον (mint), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἄνηθον (dill), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) κύμινον (cumin); καὶ (and) ἀφήκατε (you have neglected) τὰ (the) βαρύτερα (weightier matters) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law): τὴν (-) κρίσιν (justice) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἔλεος (mercy) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faithfulness). ταῦτα (These) δὲ (now) ἔδει (it behooved you) ποιῆσαι (to do), κἀκεῖνα (those) μὴ (not) ἀφιέναι* (to be leaving aside). ²⁴ ὁδηγοὶ (Guides) τυφλοί (blind)! οἱ (Those) διϋλίζοντες (straining out) τὸν (the) κώνωπα (gnat), τὴν (the) δὲ (however) κάμηλον (camel) καταπίνοντες (swallowing)!

¹⁸ Καὶ (And) προσελθὼν (having come to them), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them), λέγων (saying), “Ἐδόθη (Has been given) μοι (to Me) πᾶσα (all) ἐξουσία (authority) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἐπερωτῶσιν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὐ (not) περιπατοῦσιν (walk) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), ἀλλὰ (but) κοιναῖς (with unwashed) χερσὶν (hands) ἐσθίουσιν (eat) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread)?” ⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) τῶν (-) ὑποκριτῶν (hypocrites), ὡς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (-): ‘Οὗτος (This) ὁ (-) λαὸς (people) τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (honors), Ἡ (-) δὲ (but) καρδία (the heart) αὐτῶν (of them) πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me). ⁷ Μάτην (In vain) δὲ (now) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me), Διδάσκοντες (teaching) διδασκαλίας (as doctrines) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).’ ⁸ Ἀφέντες (Having neglected) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κρατεῖτε (you hold) τὴν (to the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men).” ⁹ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καλῶς (Neatly) ἀθετεῖτε (do you set aside) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (that) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you), τηρήσητε (you might keep). ¹⁰ Μωϋσῆς (Moses) γὰρ (for) εἶπεν (said), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) σου (of you),’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ¹¹ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say that) Ἐὰν (if) εἴπῃ (says) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ‘Κορβᾶν (It is Corban),’ ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is), Δῶρον (a gift), ‘Ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),’ ¹² οὐκέτι (no longer) ἀφίετε (do you allow) αὐτὸν (him) οὐδὲν (anything) ποιῆσαι (to do) τῷ (for the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ¹³ ἀκυροῦντες (making void) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῇ (for the) παραδόσει (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you) ᾗ (which) παρεδώκατε (you have handed down). καὶ (And) παρόμοια (like things) τοιαῦτα (such) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖτε (you do).”

⁸ Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I am doing).”

⁴⁶ “Προσέχετε (Beware) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), τῶν (-) θελόντων (desiring) περιπατεῖν (to walk) ἐν (in) στολαῖς (long robes), καὶ (and) φιλούντων (loving) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), καὶ (and) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), καὶ (and) πρωτοκλισίας (first places) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (banquets); ⁴⁷ οἳ (who) κατεσθίουσιν (devour) τὰς (the) οἰκίας (houses) τῶν (of) χηρῶν (widows), καὶ (and) προφάσει (as a pretext) μακρὰ (at great length) προσεύχονται (pray). οὗτοι (These) λήμψονται (will receive) περισσότερον (more abundant) κρίμα (condemnation).”

¹⁵ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) δώσω (will give) ὑμῖν (you) στόμα (a mouth) καὶ (and) σοφίαν (wisdom), ᾗ (which) οὐ (not) δυνήσονται (will be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to resist) ἢ (nor) ἀντειπεῖν (to reply to) ἅπαντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀντικείμενοι (opposing) ὑμῖν (you).

²² Μωϋσῆς (Moses) μὲν (indeed) εἶπεν (said) ὅτι (-), ‘Προφήτην (A prophet) ὑμῖν (to you) ἀναστήσει (will raise up) Κύριος (the Lord) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) [ὑμῶν] (of you) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) ὑμῶν (of you), ὡς (like) ἐμέ (me); αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀκούσεσθε (You will listen to) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things), ὅσα (as many as) ἂν (-) λαλήσῃ (He might say) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you). ²³ ἔσται (It will be that) δὲ (now) πᾶσα (every) ψυχὴ (soul) ἥτις (who), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀκούσῃ (might heed) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) ἐκείνου (that), ἐξολεθρευθήσεται (will be utterly destroyed) ἐκ (out from) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people).’

¹⁰ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυον (they were able) ἀντιστῆναι (to withstand) τῇ (the) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) καὶ (and) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) ᾧ (by whom) ἐλάλει (he was speaking).

¹² Ζῶν (Living is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἐνεργὴς (active), καὶ (and) τομώτερος (sharper) ὑπὲρ (than) πᾶσαν (any) μάχαιραν (sword) δίστομον (two-edged), καὶ (even) διϊκνούμενος (penetrating) ἄχρι (as far as) μερισμοῦ (the division) ψυχῆς (of soul) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἁρμῶν (of joints) τε (and) καὶ (also) μυελῶν (marrows), καὶ (and) κριτικὸς (able to judge) ἐνθυμήσεων (the thoughts) καὶ (and) ἐννοιῶν (intentions) καρδίας (of the heart). ¹³ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) κτίσις (creature) ἀφανὴς (hidden) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him); πάντα (all things) δὲ (however) γυμνὰ (are uncovered) καὶ (and) τετραχηλισμένα (laid bare) τοῖς (to the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πρὸς (to) ὃν (whom) ἡμῖν (is our) ὁ (-) λόγος (reckoning).
