¹ Λέγω (I ask) οὖν (then), μὴ (not) ἀπώσατο (did reject) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) Ἰσραηλίτης (an Israelite) εἰμί (am), ἐκ (of the) σπέρματος (seed) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham), φυλῆς (of the tribe) Βενιαμίν (of Benjamin). ² οὐκ (Not) ἀπώσατο (did reject) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὃν (whom) προέγνω (He foreknew). ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ἐν (in) Ἠλίᾳ (Elijah) τί (what) λέγει (says) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture), ὡς (how) ἐντυγχάνει (he pleads) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (with God) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (Israel): ³ “Κύριε (Lord), τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) σου (of You) ἀπέκτειναν (they have killed); τὰ (the) θυσιαστήριά (altars) σου (of You) κατέσκαψαν (they have torn down); κἀγὼ (and I) ὑπελείφθην (have been left) μόνος (alone), καὶ (and) ζητοῦσιν (they are seeking) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (life) μου (of me).”? ⁴ Ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what was) λέγει (spoken) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) χρηματισμός (divine answer)? “Κατέλιπον (I have left) ἐμαυτῷ (to Myself) ἑπτακισχιλίους (seven thousand) ἄνδρας (men) οἵτινες (who) οὐκ (not) ἔκαμψαν (have bowed) γόνυ (the knee) τῇ (-) Βάαλ (to Baal).” ⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) οὖν (then) καὶ (also), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) καιρῷ (time), λεῖμμα* (a remnant) κατ’ (according to) ἐκλογὴν (the election) χάριτος (of grace) γέγονεν (there has been). ⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) χάριτι (by grace), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐξ (from) ἔργων (works); ἐπεὶ (otherwise) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) οὐκέτι (no longer) γίνεται (would be) χάρις (grace). ⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ὃ (What) ἐπιζητεῖ (is seeking) Ἰσραήλ (Israel), τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐπέτυχεν (it has obtained); ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ἐκλογὴ (the elect) ἐπέτυχεν (obtained it). οἱ (The) δὲ (now) λοιποὶ (rest) ἐπωρώθησαν (were hardened), ⁸ καθὼς* (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἔδωκεν (Gave) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πνεῦμα (a spirit) κατανύξεως (of stupor), ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) βλέπειν (to see), καὶ (and) ὦτα (ears) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) ἀκούειν (to hear), ἕως (unto) τῆς (the) σήμερον (today) ἡμέρας (day).” ⁹ Καὶ (And) Δαυὶδ (David) λέγει (says): “Γενηθήτω (Let be) ἡ (the) τράπεζα (table) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (for) παγίδα (a snare) καὶ (and) εἰς (for) θήραν (a trap), καὶ (and) εἰς (for) σκάνδαλον (a stumbling block) καὶ (and) εἰς (for) ἀνταπόδομα (a retribution) αὐτοῖς (to them); ¹⁰ σκοτισθήτωσαν (let be darkened) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) βλέπειν (to see), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) νῶτον (backs) αὐτῶν (of them), διὰ (for) παντὸς (ever) σύνκαμψον (bent over).” ¹¹ Λέγω (I ask) οὖν (then), μὴ (not) ἔπταισαν (did they stumble) ἵνα (that) πέσωσιν (they might fall)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) τῷ (in the) αὐτῶν (of them) παραπτώματι (trespass) ἡ (-) σωτηρία (is salvation) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) παραζηλῶσαι (to provoke to jealousy) αὐτούς (them). ¹² εἰ (If) δὲ (however), τὸ (the) παράπτωμα (trespass) αὐτῶν (of them) πλοῦτος (is riches) κόσμου (of the world), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἥττημα (failure) αὐτῶν (of them) πλοῦτος (is the riches) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) αὐτῶν (of them)! ¹³ Ὑμῖν (To you) δὲ (now) λέγω (I am speaking), τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles). ἐφ’ (Upon) ὅσον (as much as) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) εἰμι (am) ἐγὼ (I) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles) ἀπόστολος (apostle), τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) μου (of me) δοξάζω (I magnify), ¹⁴ εἴ (if) πως (at all) παραζηλώσω (I shall provoke to jealousy) μου (of me) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh), καὶ (and) σώσω (shall save) τινὰς (some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them). ¹⁵ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) ἀποβολὴ (rejection) αὐτῶν (of them) καταλλαγὴ (is the reconciliation) κόσμου (of the world), τίς (what will be) ἡ (the) πρόσλημψις (acceptance), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ζωὴ (life) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead)? ¹⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) ἀπαρχὴ (firstfruit) ἁγία (is holy), καὶ (also) τὸ (the) φύραμα (lump); καὶ (and) εἰ (if) ἡ (the) ῥίζα (root) ἁγία (is holy), καὶ (also) οἱ (the) κλάδοι (branches). ¹⁷ Εἰ (If) δέ (however) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) κλάδων (branches) ἐξεκλάσθησαν (were broken off), σὺ (you) δὲ (now), ἀγριέλαιος (a wild olive tree) ὢν (being), ἐνεκεντρίσθης (were grafted in) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) συνκοινωνὸς (a fellow-partaker) τῆς (of the) ῥίζης (root) τῆς (of the) πιότητος (fatness) τῆς (of the) ἐλαίας (olive tree) ἐγένου (have become), ¹⁸ μὴ (not) κατακαυχῶ (boast over) τῶν (the) κλάδων (branches). εἰ (If) δὲ (now) κατακαυχᾶσαι (you boast against them), οὐ (not) σὺ (you) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) βαστάζεις (support), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) ῥίζα (root) σέ (you). ¹⁹ Ἐρεῖς (You will say) οὖν (then), “Ἐξεκλάσθησαν (Were broken off) κλάδοι (branches), ἵνα (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἐγκεντρισθῶ (might be grafted in).” ²⁰ καλῶς (Rightly so); τῇ (by the) ἀπιστίᾳ (unbelief) ἐξεκλάσθησαν (they were broken off); σὺ (you) δὲ (however) τῇ (-) πίστει (by faith) ἕστηκας (stand). μὴ (Not) ὑψηλὰ (high) φρόνει (be minded), ἀλλὰ (but) φοβοῦ (be afraid). ²¹ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τῶν (the) κατὰ (according to) φύσιν (nature) κλάδων (branches) οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), [μή (not) πως] (at all) οὐδὲ (neither) σοῦ (you) φείσεται (will He spare). ²² ἴδε (Behold) οὖν (therefore) χρηστότητα (the kindness) καὶ (and) ἀποτομίαν (severity) Θεοῦ (of God); ἐπὶ (upon) μὲν (indeed) τοὺς (those) πεσόντας (having fallen), ἀποτομία (severity); ἐπὶ (toward) δὲ (however) σὲ (you), χρηστότης (kindness) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐὰν (if) ἐπιμένῃς (you continue in) τῇ (the) χρηστότητι (kindness); ἐπεὶ (otherwise) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐκκοπήσῃ (will be cut off). ²³ κἀκεῖνοι (Even they) δέ (now) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἐπιμένωσιν (they continue) τῇ (-) ἀπιστίᾳ (in unbelief), ἐνκεντρισθήσονται (will be grafted in); δυνατὸς (able) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πάλιν (again) ἐνκεντρίσαι (to graft in) αὐτούς (them). ²⁴ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) σὺ (you), ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) κατὰ (according to) φύσιν (nature) ἐξεκόπης (were cut off) ἀγριελαίου (a wild olive tree), καὶ (and), παρὰ (contrary to) φύσιν (nature), ἐνεκεντρίσθης (were grafted) εἰς (into) καλλιέλαιον (a cultivated olive tree), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) οὗτοι (these), οἱ (who) κατὰ (according to) φύσιν (nature are), ἐνκεντρισθήσονται (will be grafted into) τῇ (the) ἰδίᾳ (own) ἐλαίᾳ (olive tree)! ²⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) θέλω (I want) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τὸ (of the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦτο (this), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἦτε (you may be) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) φρόνιμοι (wise), ὅτι (that) πώρωσις (a hardening) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel) γέγονεν (has happened), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) εἰσέλθῃ (may come in); ²⁶ καὶ (and) οὕτως (so) πᾶς (all) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) σωθήσεται (will be saved), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἥξει (Will come) ἐκ (out of) Σιὼν (Zion) ὁ (the One) Ῥυόμενος (Delivering), ἀποστρέψει (He will remove) ἀσεβείας (ungodliness) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰακώβ (Jacob). ²⁷ καὶ (And) αὕτη (this is) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἡ (the) παρ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me) διαθήκη (covenant), ὅταν (when) ἀφέλωμαι (I shall take away) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).” ²⁸ Κατὰ (As regards) μὲν (indeed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), ἐχθροὶ (they are enemies) δι’ (on account of) ὑμᾶς (you); κατὰ (As regards) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) ἐκλογὴν (election), ἀγαπητοὶ (beloved) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (patriarchs). ²⁹ ἀμεταμέλητα (Irrevocable) γὰρ (for) τὰ (are the) χαρίσματα (gifts) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) κλῆσις (calling) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³⁰ Ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you) ποτε (once) ἠπειθήσατε (were disobedient) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἠλεήθητε (have been shown mercy) τῇ (the) τούτων (of these) ἀπειθείᾳ (disobedience), ³¹ οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) οὗτοι (these) νῦν (now) ἠπείθησαν (have been disobedient), τῷ (the) ὑμετέρῳ (for your) ἐλέει (mercy), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) νῦν (now) ἐλεηθῶσιν (may have mercy shown them). ³² συνέκλεισεν (Has bound up) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τοὺς (-) πάντας (all) εἰς (in) ἀπείθειαν (disobedience), ἵνα (that) τοὺς (-) πάντας (all) ἐλεήσῃ (He may show mercy to). ³³ Ὦ (O), βάθος (the depth) πλούτου (of riches), καὶ (both) σοφίας (of wisdom) καὶ (and) γνώσεως (knowledge) Θεοῦ (of God)! ὡς (How) ἀνεξεραύνητα (unsearchable) τὰ (the) κρίματα (judgments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἀνεξιχνίαστοι (untraceable) αἱ (the) ὁδοὶ (ways) αὐτοῦ (of Him)! ³⁴ “Τίς (Who) γὰρ (for) ἔγνω (has known) νοῦν (the mind) Κυρίου (of the Lord), ἢ (or) τίς (who) σύμβουλος (counselor) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐγένετο (has been)?” ³⁵ “Ἢ (Or) τίς (who) προέδωκεν (has first given) αὐτῷ (to Him), καὶ (and) ἀνταποδοθήσεται (it will be recompensed) αὐτῷ (to him)?” ³⁶ ὅτι (For) ἐξ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (-) πάντα (are all things). αὐτῷ (To Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages)! ἀμήν (Amen).

³ “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἀνὴρ (a man), Ἰουδαῖος (a Jew), γεγεννημένος (born) ἐν (in) Ταρσῷ (Tarsus) τῆς (-) Κιλικίας (of Cilicia), ἀνατεθραμμένος (brought up) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (this) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) Γαμαλιήλ (of Gamaliel), πεπαιδευμένος (having been instructed) κατὰ (according to the) ἀκρίβειαν (exactness) τοῦ (of the) πατρῴου (of our Fathers) νόμου (law), ζηλωτὴς (a zealous one) ὑπάρχων (being) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (for God), καθὼς (even as) πάντες (all) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐστε (are) σήμερον (this day);

⁴ Τὴν (The) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (then) βίωσίν (manner of life) μου (of me), ‹τὴν› (which is) ἐκ (from) νεότητος (youth), τὴν (-) ἀπ’ (from its) ἀρχῆς (beginning) γενομένην (having been) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) ἔθνει (nation) μου (of me), ἔν (in) τε (also) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem), ἴσασι (know) πάντες (all) [οἱ] (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews),

⁴ μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! γινέσθω (Let be) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀληθής (true), πᾶς (every) δὲ (now) ἄνθρωπος (man) ψεύστης (a liar), καθὼς* (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ὅπως (That) ἂν (-) δικαιωθῇς (You may be justified) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) σου (of You), καὶ (and) νικήσεις (will prevail) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρίνεσθαί (being judged) σε (Your).”

³ ηὐχόμην (Could wish) γὰρ (for) ἀνάθεμα (a curse) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I), ἀπὸ (separated from) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) μου (of me), τῶν (-) συγγενῶν (kinsmen) μου (of me), κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh);

²² Ἑβραῖοί (Hebrews) εἰσιν (are they)? κἀγώ (I also). Ἰσραηλῖταί (Israelites) εἰσιν (are they)? κἀγώ (I also). σπέρμα (Descendants) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham) εἰσιν (are they)? κἀγώ (I also).

⁵ περιτομῇ (circumcision) ὀκταήμερος (on the eighth day); ἐκ (of) γένους (the nation) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), φυλῆς (of the tribe) Βενιαμίν (of Benjamin); Ἑβραῖος (a Hebrew) ἐξ (of) Ἑβραίων (Hebrews); κατὰ (according to) νόμον (the Law), Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee);

¹ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (then), πλήρης (full) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), ὑπέστρεψεν (returned) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan) καὶ (and) ἤγετο (was led) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness),

¹ Ὡς (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔγνω (knew) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς* (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἤκουσαν (heard) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πλείονας (more) μαθητὰς (disciples) ποιεῖ (makes) καὶ (and) βαπτίζει (baptizes) ἢ (than) Ἰωάννης (John)— ² καίτοιγε (although indeed) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) αὐτὸς (Himself) οὐκ (not) ἐβάπτιζεν (was baptizing), ἀλλ’ (but) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him)— ³ ἀφῆκεν (He left) τὴν (-) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea), καὶ (and) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) πάλιν (again) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee).

¹¹ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ‹ἡ (the) γυνή› (woman) “Κύριε (Sir), οὔτε (nothing) ἄντλημα (to draw with) ἔχεις (You have), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) φρέαρ (well) ἐστὶν (is) βαθύ (deep); πόθεν (from where) οὖν (then) ἔχεις (have You) τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water) τὸ (-) ζῶν (living)?

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) νῦν (now), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) κατὰ (in) ἄγνοιαν (ignorance) ἐπράξατε (you acted), ὥσπερ (as) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁴⁰ εἰπόντες (having said) τῷ (-) Ἀαρών (to Aaron), ‘Ποίησον (Make) ἡμῖν (us) θεοὺς (gods) οἳ (who) προπορεύσονται (will go before) ἡμῶν (us). ὁ (-) γὰρ (As for) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) οὗτος (this), ὃς (who) ἐξήγαγεν (brought out) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκ (from) γῆς (the land) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know) τί (what) ἐγένετο (has happened) αὐτῷ (to him).’

⁴⁸ Ἀκούοντα (Hearing it) δὲ (then), τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἔχαιρον (were rejoicing) καὶ (and) ἐδόξαζον (glorifying) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), καὶ (and) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) ὅσοι (as many as) ἦσαν (were) τεταγμένοι (appointed) εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

¹⁸ γνωστὰ (known) ἀπ’ (from) αἰῶνος (eternity).’

²⁹ ὅτι (For) οὓς (those whom) προέγνω (He foreknew), καὶ (also) προώρισεν (He predestined to be) συμμόρφους (conformed to) τῆς (the) εἰκόνος (image) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) πρωτότοκον (firstborn) ἐν (among) πολλοῖς (many) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers). ³⁰ οὓς (Those whom) δὲ (then) προώρισεν (He predestined), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐκάλεσεν (He called); καὶ (and) οὓς (whom) ἐκάλεσεν (He called), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified); οὓς (whom) δὲ (then) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδόξασεν (He glorified).

⁶ Οὐχ (It is not) οἷον (as) δὲ (however), ὅτι (that) ἐκπέπτωκεν (has failed) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) πάντες (all) οἱ (who are) ἐξ (of) Ἰσραήλ (Israel), οὗτοι (are these) Ἰσραήλ (Israel).

²³ καὶ (also) ἵνα (that) γνωρίσῃ (He might make known) τὸν (the) πλοῦτον (riches) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (upon) σκεύη (the vessels) ἐλέους (of mercy), ἃ (which) προητοίμασεν (He prepared beforehand) εἰς (for) δόξαν (glory),

² ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἅγιοι (saints) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) κρινοῦσιν (will judge)? καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἐν (by) ὑμῖν (you) κρίνεται (is to be judged) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world), ἀνάξιοί (unworthy) ἐστε (are you) κριτηρίων (of cases) ἐλαχίστων (of the smallest)?

²² εἰ (If I am) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) ζῆν (to live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (flesh), τοῦτό (this) μοι (for me) καρπὸς (is the fruit) ἔργου (of labor). καὶ (And) τί (what) αἱρήσομαι (shall I choose)? οὐ (Not) γνωρίζω (I know)!

¹ Πολυμερῶς (In many portions) καὶ (and) πολυτρόπως (in many ways), πάλαι (long ago) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) λαλήσας (having spoken) τοῖς (to the) πατράσιν (fathers) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) προφήταις (prophets), ² κατὰ (according to) πρόγνωσιν (the foreknowledge) Θεοῦ (of God) Πατρός (the Father), ἐν (by) ἁγιασμῷ (the sanctification) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), εἰς (unto) ὑπακοὴν (the obedience) καὶ (and) ῥαντισμὸν (sprinkling) αἵματος (of the blood) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ): Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) πληθυνθείη (may be multiplied).

⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) χάριτι (by grace), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐξ (from) ἔργων (works); ἐπεὶ (otherwise) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) οὐκέτι (no longer) γίνεται (would be) χάρις (grace). ⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ὃ (What) ἐπιζητεῖ (is seeking) Ἰσραήλ (Israel), τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐπέτυχεν (it has obtained); ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ἐκλογὴ (the elect) ἐπέτυχεν (obtained it). οἱ (The) δὲ (now) λοιποὶ (rest) ἐπωρώθησαν (were hardened),

²⁸ Κατὰ (As regards) μὲν (indeed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), ἐχθροὶ (they are enemies) δι’ (on account of) ὑμᾶς (you); κατὰ (As regards) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) ἐκλογὴν (election), ἀγαπητοὶ (beloved) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (patriarchs).

⁵ προορίσας (having predestined) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (for) υἱοθεσίαν (divine adoption as sons) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), εἰς (to) αὐτόν (Himself), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) εὐδοκίαν (good pleasure) τοῦ (of the) θελήματος (will) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁶ εἰς (to) ἔπαινον (the praise) δόξης (of the glory) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (of grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἧς (which) ἐχαρίτωσεν (He has freely given) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἠγαπημένῳ (Beloved One),

²⁷ Ποῦ (Where) οὖν (then is) ἡ (the) καύχησις (boasting)? ἐξεκλείσθη (It has been excluded). διὰ (Through) ποίου (what) νόμου (principle)? τῶν (That) ἔργων (of works)? οὐχί (No), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (through) νόμου (the principle) πίστεως (of faith). ²⁸ λογιζόμεθα (We reckon) γὰρ (therefore) δικαιοῦσθαι (to be justified) πίστει (by faith) ἄνθρωπον (a man), χωρὶς (apart from) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law).

⁴ Τῷ (To the one) δὲ (now) ἐργαζομένῳ (working), ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) οὐ (not) λογίζεται (is reckoned) κατὰ (according to) χάριν (grace), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) ὀφείλημα (debt). ⁵ τῷ (To the one) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἐργαζομένῳ (working), πιστεύοντι (believing) δὲ (however) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the One) δικαιοῦντα (justifying) τὸν (the) ἀσεβῆ (ungodly), λογίζεται (is reckoned) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) αὐτοῦ (of him) εἰς (for) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness),

²⁰ Νόμος (The law) δὲ (now) παρεισῆλθεν (entered), ἵνα (so that) πλεονάσῃ (might abound) τὸ (the) παράπτωμα (trespass); οὗ (where) δὲ (however) ἐπλεόνασεν (abounded) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ὑπερεπερίσσευσεν (overabounded) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace), ²¹ ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἐβασίλευσεν (reigned) ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (death), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) βασιλεύσῃ (might reign) διὰ (through) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹⁰ χάριτι (By the grace) δὲ (however) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰμι (I am) ὅ (what) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἡ (-) εἰς (toward) ἐμὲ (me) οὐ (not) κενὴ (void) ἐγενήθη (has been). ἀλλὰ (Rather), περισσότερον (more abundantly) αὐτῶν (than them) πάντων (all) ἐκοπίασα (I toiled), οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ‹ἡ› (that was) σὺν (with) ἐμοί (me).

²¹ Οὐκ (Not) ἀθετῶ (I do set aside) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); εἰ (if) γὰρ (for) διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness is), ἄρα (then) Χριστὸς (Christ) δωρεὰν (for naught) ἀπέθανεν (died).”

⁴ κατηργήθητε (You are severed) ἀπὸ (from) Χριστοῦ (Christ), οἵτινες (whoever) ἐν (in) νόμῳ (the Law) δικαιοῦσθε (are being justified); τῆς (from) χάριτος (grace) ἐξεπέσατε (you have fallen away).

⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Θεὸς (God), πλούσιος (rich) ὢν (being) ἐν (in) ἐλέει (mercy), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) πολλὴν (great) ἀγάπην (love) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἣν (with which) ἠγάπησεν (He loved) ἡμᾶς (us), ⁵ καὶ (even) ὄντας (being) ἡμᾶς (we) νεκροὺς (dead) τοῖς (-) παραπτώμασιν (in trespasses), συνεζωοποίησεν (made us alive with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) — χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) — ⁶ καὶ (and) συνήγειρεν (He raised us up together) καὶ (and) συνεκάθισεν (seated us together) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ⁷ ἵνα (in order that) ἐνδείξηται (He might show) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) αἰῶσιν (ages) τοῖς (that) ἐπερχομένοις (are coming) τὸ (the) ὑπερβάλλον (surpassing) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) χρηστότητι (kindness) ἐφ’ (toward) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ⁸ Τῇ (-) γὰρ (For) χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (yourselves); Θεοῦ (it is of God) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift), ⁹ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (as a result of) ἔργων (works), ἵνα (so that) μή (not) τις (anyone) καυχήσηται (may boast).

⁵ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) τῶν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἃ (that) ἐποιήσαμεν (did) ἡμεῖς (we), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) ἔλεος (mercy), ἔσωσεν (He saved) ἡμᾶς (us) διὰ (through) λουτροῦ (the washing) παλινγενεσίας (of regeneration) καὶ (and) ἀνακαινώσεως (renewing) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy),

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀναπληροῦται (is fulfilled) αὐτοῖς (in them) ἡ (the) προφητεία (prophecy) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah), ἡ (-) λέγουσα (saying): ‘Ἀκοῇ (In hearing) ἀκούσετε (you will hear), καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) συνῆτε (understand); Καὶ (and) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέψετε (you will see) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητε (perceive). ¹⁵ Ἐπαχύνθη (Has grown dull) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) τούτου (this), Καὶ (and) τοῖς (with the) ὠσὶν (ears) βαρέως (barely) ἤκουσαν (they have heard), Καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκάμμυσαν (they have closed); Μή‿ (not) ποτε (lest) ἴδωσιν (they should see) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes), Καὶ (and) τοῖς (with the) ὠσὶν (ears) ἀκούσωσιν (they should hear), Καὶ (and) τῇ (with the) καρδίᾳ (heart) συνῶσιν (they should understand), Καὶ (and) ἐπιστρέψωσιν (should return), Καὶ (and) ἰάσομαι (I will heal) αὐτούς (them).’

²⁴ “Ἀγωνίζεσθε (Strive) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) στενῆς (narrow) θύρας (door); ὅτι (for) πολλοί (many), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ζητήσουσιν (will seek) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσουσιν (will be able).

⁴⁰ “Τετύφλωκεν (He has blinded) αὐτῶν (of them) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes), καὶ (and) ἐπώρωσεν (has hardened) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἴδωσιν (they should see) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes), καὶ (and) νοήσωσιν (understand) τῇ (with the) καρδίᾳ (heart), καὶ (and) στραφῶσιν (turn), καὶ (and) ἰάσομαι (I will heal) αὐτούς (them).”

⁹ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? προεχόμεθα (Are we better)? οὐ (Not) πάντως (at all). προῃτιασάμεθα (We have already charged) γὰρ (for) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) τε (both) καὶ (and) Ἕλληνας (Greeks) πάντας (all) ὑφ’ (under) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) εἶναι (to be).

¹⁵ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ἁμαρτήσωμεν (Shall we sin) ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἐσμὲν (we are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)!

²⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), πάντα (all things) συνεργεῖ (works together) (ὁ (-) θεὸς) (God) εἰς (for) ἀγαθόν (good), τοῖς (to those) κατὰ (according to) πρόθεσιν (His purpose) κλητοῖς (called) οὖσιν (being).

¹⁸ ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ὃν (to whom) θέλει (He wants), ἐλεεῖ (He shows mercy); ὃν (whom) δὲ (now) θέλει (He wants), σκληρύνει (He hardens).

³¹ Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) δὲ (however), διώκων (pursuing) νόμον (a law) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), εἰς (to) νόμον (that law) οὐκ (not) ἔφθασεν (did attain). ³² διὰ (Because of) τί (why)? ὅτι (Because it was) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works). προσέκοψαν (They stumbled) τῷ (over the) λίθῳ (stone) τοῦ (-) προσκόμματος (of stumbling),

³ ἀγνοοῦντες (Being ignorant of) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἰδίαν (own) [δικαιοσύνην] (righteousness) ζητοῦντες (seeking) στῆσαι (to establish), τῇ (to the) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐχ (not) ὑπετάγησαν (they submitted).

⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) οὖν (then) καὶ (also), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) καιρῷ (time), λεῖμμα* (a remnant) κατ’ (according to) ἐκλογὴν (the election) χάριτος (of grace) γέγονεν (there has been).

²⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) θέλω (I want) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τὸ (of the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦτο (this), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἦτε (you may be) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) φρόνιμοι (wise), ὅτι (that) πώρωσις (a hardening) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel) γέγονεν (has happened), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) εἰσέλθῃ (may come in);

¹⁹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) φημι (do I mean)? ὅτι (That) εἰδωλόθυτόν (what is sacrificed to an idol) τί (anything) ἐστιν (is), ἢ (or) ὅτι (that) εἴδωλόν (an idol) τί (anything) ἐστιν (is)?

¹⁴ Ἀλλὰ (But) ἐπωρώθη (were hardened) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) αὐτῶν (of them). ἄχρι (Until) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) σήμερον (present) ἡμέρας (day), τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) κάλυμμα (veil) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) ἀναγνώσει (reading) τῆς (of the) παλαιᾶς (old) διαθήκης (covenant) μένει (remains), μὴ (not) ἀνακαλυπτόμενον (being lifted), ὅτι (which) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) καταργεῖται (is being removed).

⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁸ Τί (What) γάρ (then)? πλὴν (Only) ὅτι (that) παντὶ (in every) τρόπῳ (way), εἴτε (whether) προφάσει (in pretext) εἴτε (or) ἀληθείᾳ (in truth), Χριστὸς (Christ) καταγγέλλεται (is proclaimed). καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (this) χαίρω (I rejoice). ἀλλὰ (Yes), καὶ (and) χαρήσομαι (I will rejoice).

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (every) ἀπάτῃ (deceit) ἀδικίας (of wickedness) τοῖς (unto those) ἀπολλυμένοις (perishing), ἀνθ’ (in return for) ὧν (which) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) οὐκ (not) ἐδέξαντο (they received), εἰς (in order for) τὸ (-) σωθῆναι (to be saved) αὐτούς (them). ¹¹ καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), πέμπει (will send) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐνέργειαν (a working) πλάνης (of delusion), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) πιστεῦσαι (to believe) αὐτοὺς (them) τῷ (what) ψεύδει (is false), ¹² ἵνα (in order that) κριθῶσιν (should be judged) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντες (having believed) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), ἀλλὰ (but) εὐδοκήσαντες (having delighted) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (in unrighteousness). ¹³ Ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however) ὀφείλομεν (ought) εὐχαριστεῖν (to give thanks) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) πάντοτε (always) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you), ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) ἠγαπημένοι (beloved) ὑπὸ (by) Κυρίου (the Lord), ὅτι (that) εἵλατο (has chosen) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀπ᾽‿ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), εἰς (unto) σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἐν (in) ἁγιασμῷ (the sanctification) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), καὶ (and) πίστει (by faith) ἀληθείας (of the truth); ¹⁴ εἰς (to) ὃ (this) καὶ (also) ἐκάλεσεν (He called) ὑμᾶς (you), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) περιποίησιν (the obtaining) δόξης (of the glory) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹⁷ ἴστε (You know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) καὶ (even) μετέπειτα (afterward), θέλων (wishing) κληρονομῆσαι (to inherit) τὴν (the) εὐλογίαν (blessing), ἀπεδοκιμάσθη (he was rejected); μετανοίας (of repentance) γὰρ (for) τόπον (place) οὐχ (not) εὗρεν (he found), καίπερ (although) μετὰ (with) δακρύων (tears) ἐκζητήσας (having earnestly sought) αὐτήν (it).

¹³ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) αὐτοῖς (to them) λαλῶ (I speak): ‘Ὅτι (Because) βλέποντες (seeing), οὐ (not) βλέπουσιν (do they see); Καὶ (and) ἀκούοντες (hearing), οὐκ (not) ἀκούουσιν (do they hear), οὐδὲ (nor) συνίουσιν (do they understand).’ ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀναπληροῦται (is fulfilled) αὐτοῖς (in them) ἡ (the) προφητεία (prophecy) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah), ἡ (-) λέγουσα (saying): ‘Ἀκοῇ (In hearing) ἀκούσετε (you will hear), καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) συνῆτε (understand); Καὶ (and) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέψετε (you will see) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητε (perceive).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμῖν (To you) τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) δέδοται (has been given) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ἐκείνοις (To those) δὲ (however) τοῖς (who are) ἔξω (outside), ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) τὰ (-) πάντα (everything) γίνεται (is done), ¹² ἵνα (so that), ‘Βλέποντες (Seeing), βλέπωσιν (they might see) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἴδωσιν (perceive); Καὶ (and) ἀκούοντες (hearing), ἀκούωσιν (they might hear) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) συνιῶσιν (understand); Μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) ἐπιστρέψωσιν (they should turn), Καὶ (and) ἀφεθῇ (should be forgiven) αὐτοῖς (them).’”

¹⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ὑμῖν (To you) δέδοται (it has been given) γνῶναι (to know) τὰ (the) μυστήρια (mysteries) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); τοῖς (to) δὲ (however) λοιποῖς (the rest), ἐν (it is in) παραβολαῖς (parables), ἵνα (so that), ‘Βλέποντες (Seeing), μὴ (not) βλέπωσιν (may they see); Καὶ (and) ἀκούοντες (hearing), μὴ (not) συνιῶσιν (may they understand).’

²⁶ λέγων (saying): ‘Πορεύθητι (Go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) τοῦτον (this) καὶ (and) εἰπόν (say), “Ἀκοῇ (In hearing) ἀκούσετε (you will hear) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) συνῆτε (understand); καὶ (and) βλέποντες (in seeing) βλέψετε (you will see) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητε (perceive).”

¹⁴ Ἀλλὰ (But) ἐπωρώθη (were hardened) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) αὐτῶν (of them). ἄχρι (Until) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) σήμερον (present) ἡμέρας (day), τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) κάλυμμα (veil) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) ἀναγνώσει (reading) τῆς (of the) παλαιᾶς (old) διαθήκης (covenant) μένει (remains), μὴ (not) ἀνακαλυπτόμενον (being lifted), ὅτι (which) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) καταργεῖται (is being removed). ¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (But) ἕως (unto) σήμερον (this day), ἡνίκα (when) ἂν (-) ἀναγινώσκηται (shall be read) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), κάλυμμα (a veil) ἐπὶ (over) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) αὐτῶν (of them) κεῖται (lies).

²⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ‘Ἄφρων (Fool)! ταύτῃ (This) τῇ (-) νυκτὶ (night), τὴν (the) ψυχήν (soul) σου (of you) ἀπαιτοῦσιν (is required) ἀπὸ (of) σοῦ (you); ἃ (what) δὲ (now) ἡτοίμασας (you did prepare)— τίνι (to whom) ἔσται (will it be)?’

¹⁹ Ἄνθρωπος (A man) δέ (now) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) πλούσιος (rich), καὶ (and) ἐνεδιδύσκετο (he was clothed in) πορφύραν (purple) καὶ (and) βύσσον (fine linen), εὐφραινόμενος (making good cheer) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) λαμπρῶς (in splendor). ²⁰ πτωχὸς (A poor man) δέ (now) τις (certain) ὀνόματι (named) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἐβέβλητο (was laid) πρὸς (at) τὸν (the) πυλῶνα (gate) αὐτοῦ (of him), εἱλκωμένος (being full of sores) ²¹ καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμῶν (desiring) χορτασθῆναι (to be fed) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (that) πιπτόντων (falling) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) τοῦ (of the) πλουσίου (rich man); ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) κύνες (dogs), ἐρχόμενοι (coming), ἐπέλειχον (were licking) τὰ (the) ἕλκη (sores) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²² Ἐγένετο (It came to pass that) δὲ (then) ἀποθανεῖν (died) τὸν (the) πτωχὸν (poor man), καὶ (and) ἀπενεχθῆναι (was carried away) αὐτὸν (he) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόλπον (bosom) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham). ἀπέθανεν (Died) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) πλούσιος (rich man) καὶ (and) ἐτάφη (was buried). ²³ καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ᾅδῃ (Hades), ἐπάρας (having lifted up) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὑπάρχων (being) ἐν (in) βασάνοις (torment), ὁρᾷ (he sees) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar), καὶ (and) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) κόλποις (bosom) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²⁴ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (he) φωνήσας (having cried out) εἶπεν (said), ‘Πάτερ (Father) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ἐλέησόν (have mercy on) με (me) καὶ (and) πέμψον (send) Λάζαρον (Lazarus), ἵνα (that) βάψῃ (he might dip) τὸ (the) ἄκρον (tip) τοῦ (of the) δακτύλου (finger) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὕδατος (in water) καὶ (and) καταψύξῃ (cool) τὴν (the) γλῶσσάν (tongue) μου (of me); ὅτι (for) ὀδυνῶμαι (I am suffering) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φλογὶ (flame) ταύτῃ (this).’ ²⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ‘Τέκνον (Child), μνήσθητι (remember) ὅτι (that) ἀπέλαβες (you did fully receive) τὰ (the things) ἀγαθά (good) σου (of you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ζωῇ (lifetime) σου (of you), καὶ (and) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ὁμοίως (likewise) τὰ (the things) κακά (evil). νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ὧδε (here) παρακαλεῖται (he is comforted); σὺ (you) δὲ (now) ὀδυνᾶσαι (are suffering).

¹⁷ Τοῖς (To the) πλουσίοις (rich) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age), παράγγελλε (instruct them) μὴ (not) ὑψηλοφρονεῖν (to be high-minded), μηδὲ (nor) ἠλπικέναι (to have hope) ἐπὶ (in) πλούτου (of riches) ἀδηλότητι (the uncertainty), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπὶ (on) Θεῷ (God) τῷ (the One) παρέχοντι (providing) ἡμῖν (us) πάντα (all things) πλουσίως (richly) εἰς (for) ἀπόλαυσιν (enjoyment), ¹⁸ ἀγαθοεργεῖν (to do good), πλουτεῖν (to be rich) ἐν (in) ἔργοις (works) καλοῖς (good), εὐμεταδότους (generous in distributing) εἶναι (to be), κοινωνικούς (ready to share), ¹⁹ ἀποθησαυρίζοντας (treasuring up) ἑαυτοῖς (for themselves) θεμέλιον (a foundation) καλὸν (good) εἰς (for) τὸ (the) μέλλον (future), ἵνα (so that) ἐπιλάβωνται (they may take hold) τῆς (of) ὄντως (that which is indeed) ζωῆς (life).

² εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) δι’ (by) ἀγγέλων (angels) λαληθεὶς (having been spoken) λόγος (word) ἐγένετο (was) βέβαιος (unalterable), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) παράβασις (transgression) καὶ (and) παρακοὴ (disobedience) ἔλαβεν (received) ἔνδικον (a just) μισθαποδοσίαν (recompense),

²¹ Διότι (For) γνόντες (having known) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) Θεὸν (God) ἐδόξασαν (they glorified Him), ἢ (or) ηὐχαρίστησαν (were thankful), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐματαιώθησαν (they became futile) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) διαλογισμοῖς (thinking) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐσκοτίσθη (was darkened) ἡ (the) ἀσύνετος (foolish) αὐτῶν (of them) καρδία (heart).

⁸ καθὼς* (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἔδωκεν (Gave) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πνεῦμα (a spirit) κατανύξεως (of stupor), ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) βλέπειν (to see), καὶ (and) ὦτα (ears) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) ἀκούειν (to hear), ἕως (unto) τῆς (the) σήμερον (today) ἡμέρας (day).”

¹⁸ ἐσκοτωμένοι (being darkened) τῇ (in the) διανοίᾳ (understanding), ὄντες (being) ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι (alienated from) τῆς (the) ζωῆς (life) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἄγνοιαν (ignorance) τὴν (-) οὖσαν (being) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) πώρωσιν (hardness) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them),

⁴ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγγέλων (the angels) ἁμαρτησάντων (having sinned), οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), ἀλλὰ (but) σειραῖς* (in chains) ζόφου (of gloomy darkness) ταρταρώσας (having cast them down to Tartarus), παρέδωκεν (delivered them), εἰς (for) κρίσιν (judgment) τηρουμένους (being kept);

¹⁷ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) πηγαὶ (springs) ἄνυδροι (without water) καὶ (and) ὁμίχλαι (mists) ὑπὸ (by) λαίλαπος (storm) ἐλαυνόμεναι (being driven), οἷς (for whom) ὁ (-) ζόφος (gloom) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness) τετήρηται (has been reserved).

⁶ ἀγγέλους (The angels) τε (both) τοὺς (-) μὴ (not) τηρήσαντας (having kept) τὴν (own) ἑαυτῶν (their) ἀρχὴν (domain), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπολιπόντας (having left) τὸ (the) ἴδιον (own) οἰκητήριον (dwelling), εἰς (unto) κρίσιν (the judgment) μεγάλης (of the great) ἡμέρας (day), δεσμοῖς (in chains) ἀϊδίοις (eternal) ὑπὸ (under) ζόφον (darkness) τετήρηκεν (He keeps),

¹³ κύματα (waves) ἄγρια (wild) θαλάσσης (of the sea), ἐπαφρίζοντα (foaming out) τὰς (-) ἑαυτῶν (of their) αἰσχύνας (shame); ἀστέρες (stars) πλανῆται (wandering), οἷς (to whom) ὁ (the) ζόφος (gloom) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness) εἰς (to) αἰῶνα (the age) τετήρηται (has been reserved).

⁴² Ἐξιόντων (Having departed) δὲ (then), αὐτῶν (they) παρεκάλουν (were begging) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) μεταξὺ (next) σάββατον (Sabbath) λαληθῆναι (to be spoken) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) ταῦτα (these).

⁴⁶ Παρρησιασάμενοί (Having spoken boldly) τε (also), ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) εἶπαν (said), “Ὑμῖν (To you) ἦν (it was) ἀναγκαῖον (necessary) πρῶτον (first) λαληθῆναι (to be spoken) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ἐπειδὴ (but since) ἀπωθεῖσθε (you thrust away) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀξίους (worthy) κρίνετε (you judge) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τῆς (-) αἰωνίου (of eternal) ζωῆς (life), ἰδοὺ (behold), στρεφόμεθα (we are turning) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles). ⁴⁷ οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἐντέταλται (has commanded) ἡμῖν (us) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord): ‘Τέθεικά (I have set) σε (you) εἰς (for) φῶς (a light) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), τοῦ (-) εἶναί (to be) σε (you) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἕως (to) ἐσχάτου (the uttermost part) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth).’” ⁴⁸ Ἀκούοντα (Hearing it) δὲ (then), τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἔχαιρον (were rejoicing) καὶ (and) ἐδόξαζον (glorifying) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), καὶ (and) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) ὅσοι (as many as) ἦσαν (were) τεταγμένοι (appointed) εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

⁶ ἀντιτασσομένων (Opposing) δὲ (however) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) βλασφημούντων (reviling him), ἐκτιναξάμενος (having shaken out) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments), εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τὸ (The) αἷμα (blood) ὑμῶν (of You) ἐπὶ (be upon) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) ὑμῶν (of you); καθαρὸς (clean) ἐγώ (I am). ἀπὸ (From) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now on), εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) πορεύσομαι (I will go).”

¹⁸ καὶ (and) ἰδεῖν (saw) αὐτὸν (Him) λέγοντά (saying) μοι (to me), ‘Σπεῦσον (Make haste) καὶ (and) ἔξελθε (go away) ἐν (with) τάχει (speed) ἐξ (out of) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), διότι (because) οὐ (not) παραδέξονταί (they will receive) σου (your) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) περὶ (about) ἐμοῦ (Me).’ ¹⁹ Κἀγὼ (And I) εἶπον (said), ‘Κύριε (Lord), αὐτοὶ (they themselves) ἐπίστανται (know) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἤμην (was) φυλακίζων (imprisoning) καὶ (and) δέρων (beating) κατὰ (in each) τὰς (of those) συναγωγὰς (synagogues) τοὺς (those) πιστεύοντας (believing) ἐπὶ (on) σέ (You). ²⁰ καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐξεχύννετο (was poured out) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) Στεφάνου (of Stephen), τοῦ (the) μάρτυρός (witness) σου (of You), καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (I myself) ἤμην (was) ἐφεστὼς (standing by), καὶ (and) συνευδοκῶν (consenting), καὶ (and) φυλάσσων (watching over) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) τῶν (of those) ἀναιρούντων (killing) αὐτόν (him).’ ²¹ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρός (to) με (me), ‘Πορεύου (Go), ὅτι (for) ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (to) ἔθνη (the Gentiles) μακρὰν (far away) ἐξαποστελῶ (will send) σε (you).’”

²⁴ Καὶ (And) οἱ (some) μὲν (indeed) ἐπείθοντο (were persuaded of) τοῖς (the things) λεγομένοις (he is speaking); οἱ (some) δὲ (however) ἠπίστουν (refused to believe). ²⁵ ἀσύμφωνοι (Discordant) δὲ (then) ὄντες (being) πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἀπελύοντο (they began to leave), εἰπόντος (having spoken) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) ῥῆμα (word) ἓν (one) ὅτι (-): “Καλῶς (Rightly) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) διὰ (by) Ἠσαΐου (Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you), ²⁶ λέγων (saying): ‘Πορεύθητι (Go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) τοῦτον (this) καὶ (and) εἰπόν (say), “Ἀκοῇ (In hearing) ἀκούσετε (you will hear) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) συνῆτε (understand); καὶ (and) βλέποντες (in seeing) βλέψετε (you will see) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητε (perceive).” ²⁷ ἐπαχύνθη (Has grown dull) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) τούτου (this), καὶ (and) τοῖς (with the) ὠσὶν (ears) βαρέως (barely) ἤκουσαν (they hear), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκάμμυσαν (they have closed), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) ἴδωσιν (they should see) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes), καὶ (and) τοῖς (with the) ὠσὶν (ears) ἀκούσωσιν (they should hear), καὶ (and) τῇ (with the) καρδίᾳ (heart) συνῶσιν (they should understand), καὶ (and) ἐπιστρέψωσιν (should turn), καὶ (and) ἰάσομαι (I will heal) αὐτούς (them).’ ²⁸ Γνωστὸν (Known) οὖν (therefore) ἔστω (be it) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἀπεστάλη (has been sent) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) σωτήριον (salvation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); αὐτοὶ (they) καὶ (then) ἀκούσονται (will listen)!”

¹⁹ Ἀλλὰ (But) λέγω (I ask), μὴ (not) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (did know)? πρῶτος (First), Μωϋσῆς (Moses) λέγει (says): “Ἐγὼ (I) παραζηλώσω (will provoke to jealousy) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπ’ (by those) οὐκ (not) ἔθνει (a nation); ἐπ’ (by) ἔθνει (a nation) ἀσυνέτῳ (without understanding), παροργιῶ (I will anger) ὑμᾶς (you).”

¹ Λέγω (I ask) οὖν (then), μὴ (not) ἀπώσατο (did reject) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) Ἰσραηλίτης (an Israelite) εἰμί (am), ἐκ (of the) σπέρματος (seed) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham), φυλῆς (of the tribe) Βενιαμίν (of Benjamin).

¹² εἰ (If) δὲ (however), τὸ (the) παράπτωμα (trespass) αὐτῶν (of them) πλοῦτος (is riches) κόσμου (of the world), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἥττημα (failure) αὐτῶν (of them) πλοῦτος (is the riches) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) αὐτῶν (of them)!

¹⁴ εἴ (if) πως (at all) παραζηλώσω (I shall provoke to jealousy) μου (of me) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh), καὶ (and) σώσω (shall save) τινὰς (some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them).

³¹ οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) οὗτοι (these) νῦν (now) ἠπείθησαν (have been disobedient), τῷ (the) ὑμετέρῳ (for your) ἐλέει (mercy), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) νῦν (now) ἐλεηθῶσιν (may have mercy shown them).

¹⁵ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) ἀποβολὴ (rejection) αὐτῶν (of them) καταλλαγὴ (is the reconciliation) κόσμου (of the world), τίς (what will be) ἡ (the) πρόσλημψις (acceptance), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ζωὴ (life) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead)?

³³ Ὦ (O), βάθος (the depth) πλούτου (of riches), καὶ (both) σοφίας (of wisdom) καὶ (and) γνώσεως (knowledge) Θεοῦ (of God)! ὡς (How) ἀνεξεραύνητα (unsearchable) τὰ (the) κρίματα (judgments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἀνεξιχνίαστοι (untraceable) αἱ (the) ὁδοὶ (ways) αὐτοῦ (of Him)!

⁸ Ἐμοὶ (To me), τῷ (the) ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ (very least) πάντων (of all) ἁγίων (saints), ἐδόθη (was given) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὕτη (this): τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach) τὸ (the) ἀνεξιχνίαστον (unsearchable) πλοῦτος (riches) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) ἕβδομος (seventh) ἄγγελος (angel) ἐσάλπισεν (sounded his trumpet), καὶ (and) ἐγένοντο (there were) φωναὶ (voices) μεγάλαι (great) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), λέγοντες (saying): “Ἐγένετο (Has become) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), τοῦ (that of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Χριστοῦ (Christ) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) βασιλεύσει (He will reign) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages).” ¹⁶ Καὶ (And) οἱ (the) εἴκοσι (twenty) τέσσαρες (four) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) οἱ (-) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) καθήμενοι (sitting) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) θρόνους (thrones) αὐτῶν (of them) ἔπεσαν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) πρόσωπα (faces) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) προσεκύνησαν (worshiped) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ¹⁷ λέγοντες (saying): “Εὐχαριστοῦμέν (We give thanks) σοι (to You), Κύριε (Lord) ὁ (-) Θεός (God) ὁ (-) Παντοκράτωρ (Almighty), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being), καὶ (and) ὁ (who) ἦν (was), ὅτι (that) εἴληφας (You have taken) τὴν (the) δύναμίν (power) σου (of You) τὴν (-) μεγάλην (great), καὶ (and) ἐβασίλευσας (have begun to reign). ¹⁸ καὶ (And) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations) ὠργίσθησαν (were enraged), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) ἡ (the) ὀργή (wrath) σου (of You), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (time) τῶν (for the) νεκρῶν (dead) κριθῆναι (to be judged), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) τοῖς (to the) δούλοις (servants) σου (of You), τοῖς (the) προφήταις (prophets), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to those) φοβουμένοις (fearing) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) σου (of You), τοὺς* (the) μικροὺς* (small) καὶ (and) τοὺς* (the) μεγάλους* (great), καὶ (and) διαφθεῖραι (to destroy) τοὺς (those who) διαφθείροντας (are destroying) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth).” ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ἠνοίγη (was opened) ὁ (the) ναὸς (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὁ (-) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), καὶ (and) ὤφθη (was seen) ἡ (the) κιβωτὸς (ark) τῆς (of the) διαθήκης (covenant) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple) αὐτοῦ (of Him). καὶ (And) ἐγένοντο (there were) ἀστραπαὶ (flashes of lightning), καὶ (and) φωναὶ (voices), καὶ (and) βρονταὶ (thunders), καὶ (and) σεισμὸς (an earthquake), καὶ (and) χάλαζα (hail) μεγάλη (great).

¹⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (however) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Πορεύου (Go), ὅτι (for) σκεῦος (a vessel) ἐκλογῆς (of choice) ἐστίν (is) μοι (to Me) οὗτος (this man), τοῦ (-) βαστάσαι (to carry) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me) ἐνώπιον (before) (τῶν) (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles), τε (and) καὶ (also) βασιλέων (kings), υἱῶν (the sons) τε (then) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel);

² Λειτουργούντων (As were ministering) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (they) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) καὶ (and) νηστευόντων (fasting), εἶπεν (said) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), “Ἀφορίσατε (Set apart) δή (then) μοι (to Me) τὸν (-) Βαρνάβαν (Barnabas) καὶ (and) Σαῦλον (Saul) εἰς (for) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) ὃ (to which) προσκέκλημαι (I have called) αὐτούς (them).”

²¹ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρός (to) με (me), ‘Πορεύου (Go), ὅτι (for) ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (to) ἔθνη (the Gentiles) μακρὰν (far away) ἐξαποστελῶ (will send) σε (you).’”

¹⁷ ἐξαιρούμενός (delivering) σε (you) ἐκ (out from) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles), εἰς (to) οὓς (whom) ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (am sending) σε (you), ¹⁸ ἀνοῖξαι (to open) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦ (that) ἐπιστρέψαι (they may turn) ἀπὸ (from) σκότους (darkness) εἰς (to) φῶς (light), καὶ (and) τῆς (from the) ἐξουσίας (power) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), τοῦ (that) λαβεῖν (may receive) αὐτοὺς (they) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) καὶ (and) κλῆρον (an inheritance) ἐν (among) τοῖς (those) ἡγιασμένοις (having been sanctified) πίστει (by faith) τῇ (that is) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me).’

¹⁶ εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναί (to be) με (me) λειτουργὸν (a minister) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), ἱερουργοῦντα (administering the sacred service) τὸ (of the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might become) ἡ (the) προσφορὰ (offering) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) εὐπρόσδεκτος (acceptable), ἡγιασμένη (having been sanctified) ἐν (in the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy). ¹⁷ Ἔχω (I have) οὖν (therefore) τὴν (the) καύχησιν (boasting) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὰ (in the things) πρὸς (pertaining to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ¹⁸ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) τολμήσω (will I dare) τι (anything) λαλεῖν (to speak of), ὧν (what) οὐ (except) κατειργάσατο (has accomplished) Χριστὸς (Christ) δι’ (through) ἐμοῦ (me), εἰς (unto the) ὑπακοὴν (obedience) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), λόγῳ (by word) καὶ (and) ἔργῳ (deed), ¹⁹ ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) σημείων (of signs) καὶ (and) τεράτων (wonders), ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) [θεοῦ] (of God); ὥστε (so as) με (for me) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) κύκλῳ (around) μέχρι (unto) τοῦ (-) Ἰλλυρικοῦ (Illyricum), πεπληρωκέναι (to have fully proclaimed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹⁶ ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me), ἵνα (that) εὐαγγελίζωμαι (I might preach) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), εὐθέως (immediately) οὐ (not) προσανεθέμην (I consulted) σαρκὶ (with flesh) καὶ (and) αἵματι (blood),

² ἀνέβην (I went up) δὲ (now) κατὰ (according to) ἀποκάλυψιν (a revelation) καὶ (and) ἀνεθέμην (set before) αὐτοῖς (them) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) ὃ (that) κηρύσσω (I proclaim) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles)— κατ’ (apart) ἰδίαν (individually) δὲ (however) τοῖς (to those) δοκοῦσιν (esteemed)— μή (lest) πως (hardly) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) τρέχω (I should be running) ἢ (or) ἔδραμον (have run).

⁷ ἀλλὰ (But) τοὐναντίον (on the contrary), ἰδόντες (having seen) ὅτι (that) πεπίστευμαι (I have been entrusted with) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) ἀκροβυστίας (uncircumcision), καθὼς (just as) Πέτρος (Peter with that) τῆς (of the) περιτομῆς (circumcision) — ⁸ ὁ (the One) γὰρ (for) ἐνεργήσας (having worked) Πέτρῳ (in Peter) εἰς (for) ἀποστολὴν (apostleship) τῆς (of the) περιτομῆς (circumcision) ἐνήργησεν (did) καὶ (also) ἐμοὶ (in me) εἰς (toward) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) — ⁹ καὶ (and) γνόντες (having known) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (-) δοθεῖσάν (having been given) μοι (to me), Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Κηφᾶς (Cephas) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John), οἱ (those) δοκοῦντες (esteemed) στῦλοι (pillars) εἶναι (to be), δεξιὰς (the right hands) ἔδωκαν (gave) ἐμοὶ (to me) καὶ (and) Βαρνάβα (Barnabas), κοινωνίας (of fellowship), ἵνα (that) ἡμεῖς (we should go) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles); αὐτοὶ (they) δὲ (however) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) περιτομήν (circumcision).

⁷ εἰς (in regard to) ὃ (which) ἐτέθην (was appointed) ἐγὼ (I) κῆρυξ (a herald) καὶ (and) ἀπόστολος (an apostle)— ἀλήθειαν (the truth) λέγω (I am speaking); οὐ (not) ψεύδομαι (I do lie)— διδάσκαλος (a teacher) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), ἐν (in) πίστει (faith) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth).

¹¹ εἰς (to) ὃ (which) ἐτέθην (was appointed) ἐγὼ (I) κήρυξ (a herald), καὶ (and) ἀπόστολος (an apostle), καὶ (and) διδάσκαλος (a teacher). ¹² Δι’ (For) ἣν (this) αἰτίαν (reason) καὶ (also) ταῦτα (these things) πάσχω (I suffer). ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐπαισχύνομαι (I am ashamed); οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ᾧ (whom) πεπίστευκα (I have believed), καὶ (and) πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) ὅτι (that) δυνατός (able) ἐστιν (He is) τὴν (the) παραθήκην (deposit entrusted) μου (of me) φυλάξαι (to guard) εἰς (for) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) ἡμέραν (day).

¹¹ Λέγω (I ask) οὖν (then), μὴ (not) ἔπταισαν (did they stumble) ἵνα (that) πέσωσιν (they might fall)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) τῷ (in the) αὐτῶν (of them) παραπτώματι (trespass) ἡ (-) σωτηρία (is salvation) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) παραζηλῶσαι (to provoke to jealousy) αὐτούς (them).

²¹ ἐπειδὴ (Since) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (knew) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) σοφίας (wisdom) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), εὐδόκησεν (was pleased) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) μωρίας (foolishness) τοῦ (of the) κηρύγματος (proclamation), σῶσαι (to save) τοὺς (those) πιστεύοντας (believing).

¹⁶ τί (How) γὰρ (for) οἶδας (know you), γύναι (wife), εἰ (if) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (husband) σώσεις (you will save)? ἢ (Or) τί (how) οἶδας (know you), ἄνερ (husband), εἰ (if) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) σώσεις (you will save)?

²⁰ καὶ (And) ἐγενόμην (I became) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), ὡς (like) Ἰουδαῖος (a Jew), ἵνα (so that) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) κερδήσω (I might win). τοῖς (To those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law), ὡς (as) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the law)— μὴ (not) ὢν (being) αὐτὸς (myself) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the law)— ἵνα (so that) τοὺς (those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the law) κερδήσω (I might win). ²¹ τοῖς (To those) ἀνόμοις (outside the Law), ὡς (like) ἄνομος (outside the Law)— μὴ (not) ὢν (being) ἄνομος (outside the law) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔννομος (under the law) Χριστοῦ (to Christ)— ἵνα (so that) κερδάνω (I might win) τοὺς (those) ἀνόμους (outside the Law). ²² ἐγενόμην (I became) τοῖς (to the) ἀσθενέσιν (weak), ἀσθενής (weak), ἵνα (that) τοὺς (the) ἀσθενεῖς (weak) κερδήσω (I might win). τοῖς (These things) πᾶσιν (to all) γέγονα (I have become) πάντα (all), ἵνα (so that) πάντως (by all means), τινὰς (some) σώσω (I might save).

⁴ ὃς (who) πάντας (all) ἀνθρώπους (men) θέλει (desires) σωθῆναι (to be saved), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) ἐπίγνωσιν (the knowledge) ἀληθείας (of the truth) ἐλθεῖν (to come).

¹⁶ ἔπεχε (Give heed) σεαυτῷ (to yourself) καὶ (and) τῇ (to the) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching). ἐπίμενε (Continue) αὐτοῖς (in them), τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for) ποιῶν (doing), καὶ (both) σεαυτὸν (yourself) σώσεις (you will save) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἀκούοντάς (hearing) σου (you).

¹⁰ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), πάντα (all things) ὑπομένω (I endure) διὰ (for the sake of) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) σωτηρίας (the salvation) τύχωσιν (may obtain) τῆς (that is) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), μετὰ (with) δόξης (glory) αἰωνίου (eternal).

¹² ὃν (whom) ἀνέπεμψά (I have sent back) σοι (to you) αὐτόν (in person) — τοῦτ’ (he who) ἔστιν (is) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (my) σπλάγχνα (very heart) —

²⁰ γινωσκέτω* (let him know) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the one) ἐπιστρέψας (having brought back) ἁμαρτωλὸν (a sinner) ἐκ (from) πλάνης (the error) ὁδοῦ (of the way) αὐτοῦ (of him) σώσει (will save) ψυχὴν (the soul) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐκ (from) θανάτου (death) καὶ (and) καλύψει (will cover over) πλῆθος (a multitude) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins).

²⁴ ὅτι (For) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) υἱός (son) μου (of mine) νεκρὸς (dead) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἀνέζησεν (is alive again); ἦν (he was) ἀπολωλὼς (lost), καὶ (and) εὑρέθη (is found).’ καὶ (And) ἤρξαντο (they began) εὐφραίνεσθαι (to be merry).

³² εὐφρανθῆναι (To make merry) δὲ (however) καὶ (and) χαρῆναι (to rejoice) ἔδει (it was fitting), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) οὗτος (this), νεκρὸς (dead) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (is alive again); καὶ (and) ἀπολωλὼς (he was lost), καὶ (and) εὑρέθη (is found).’”

¹⁰ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for), ἐχθροὶ (enemies) ὄντες (being), κατηλλάγημεν (we were reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) θανάτου (death) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more), καταλλαγέντες (having been reconciled), σωθησόμεθα (shall we be saved) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ζωῇ (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him)! ¹¹ οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) καυχώμενοι (we are rejoicing) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) νῦν (now) τὴν (the) καταλλαγὴν (reconciliation) ἐλάβομεν (we have received).

¹ Λέγω (I ask) οὖν (then), μὴ (not) ἀπώσατο (did reject) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) Ἰσραηλίτης (an Israelite) εἰμί (am), ἐκ (of the) σπέρματος (seed) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham), φυλῆς (of the tribe) Βενιαμίν (of Benjamin). ² οὐκ (Not) ἀπώσατο (did reject) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὃν (whom) προέγνω (He foreknew). ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ἐν (in) Ἠλίᾳ (Elijah) τί (what) λέγει (says) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture), ὡς (how) ἐντυγχάνει (he pleads) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (with God) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (Israel):

¹⁸ Τὰ (-) δὲ (And) πάντα (all things) ἐκ (are of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), τοῦ (the One) καταλλάξαντος (having reconciled) ἡμᾶς (us) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) διὰ (through) Χριστοῦ (Christ), καὶ (and) δόντος (having given) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) τῆς (-) καταλλαγῆς (of reconciliation), ¹⁹ ὡς (how) ὅτι (that) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) κόσμον (the world) καταλλάσσων (reconciling) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself), μὴ (not) λογιζόμενος (reckoning) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) θέμενος (having put) ἐν (into) ἡμῖν (us) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (-) καταλλαγῆς (of reconciliation). ²⁰ Ὑπὲρ (For) Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) πρεσβεύομεν (we are ambassadors), ὡς (as though) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) παρακαλοῦντος (is beseeching) δι’ (through) ἡμῶν (us). δεόμεθα (We implore) ὑπὲρ (on behalf) Χριστοῦ (of Christ): καταλλάγητε (Be reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

¹⁰ εἰς (for) οἰκονομίαν (the administration) τοῦ (of the) πληρώματος (fullness) τῶν (of the) καιρῶν (times), ἀνακεφαλαιώσασθαι (to bring together) τὰ (the) πάντα (all things) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ), τὰ (the things) ἐπὶ (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens) καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth),

²⁰ καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀποκαταλλάξαι (to reconcile) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) εἰς (to) αὐτόν (Himself), εἰρηνοποιήσας (having made peace) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τοῦ (of the) σταυροῦ (cross) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him), εἴτε (whether) τὰ (the things) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), εἴτε (or) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens). ²¹ Καὶ (And) ὑμᾶς (you), ποτε (once) ὄντας (being) ἀπηλλοτριωμένους (alienated) καὶ (and) ἐχθροὺς (hostile) τῇ (-) διανοίᾳ (in mind) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (deeds) τοῖς (-) πονηροῖς (evil),

⁴ ‹Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) θρόνους (thrones), καὶ (and) ἐκάθισαν (they sat) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτούς (them), καὶ (and) κρίμα (judgment) ἐδόθη (was given) αὐτοῖς (to them), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) τῶν (of those) πεπελεκισμένων (having been beheaded) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) οἵτινες (those who) οὐ (not) προσεκύνησαν (did worship) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast), οὐδὲ (nor) τὴν (the) εἰκόνα (image) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔλαβον (did take) τὸ (the) χάραγμα (mark) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸ (the) μέτωπον (forehead), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) αὐτῶν (of them). καὶ (And) ἔζησαν (they lived) καὶ (and) ἐβασίλευσαν (reigned) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (-) χριστοῦ (Christ) χίλια (a thousand) ἔτη› (years). ⁵ Οἱ (The) λοιποὶ (rest) τῶν (of the) νεκρῶν (dead) οὐκ (not) ἔζησαν (lived again) ἄχρι (until) τελεσθῇ (shall have been completed) τὰ (the) χίλια (thousand) ἔτη (years). αὕτη (This is) ἡ (the) ἀνάστασις (resurrection) ἡ (-) πρώτη (first). ⁶ μακάριος (Blessed) καὶ (and) ἅγιος (holy is) ὁ (the one) ἔχων (having) μέρος (a part) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) τῇ (-) πρώτῃ (first)! ἐπὶ (Over) τούτων (these) ὁ (the) δεύτερος (second) θάνατος (death) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) ἐξουσίαν (power), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔσονται (they will be) ἱερεῖς (priests) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), καὶ (and) βασιλεύσουσιν (will reign) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) τὰ (a) χίλια (thousand) ἔτη (years).

¹⁷ Εἰ (If) δέ (however) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) κλάδων (branches) ἐξεκλάσθησαν (were broken off), σὺ (you) δὲ (now), ἀγριέλαιος (a wild olive tree) ὢν (being), ἐνεκεντρίσθης (were grafted in) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) συνκοινωνὸς (a fellow-partaker) τῆς (of the) ῥίζης (root) τῆς (of the) πιότητος (fatness) τῆς (of the) ἐλαίας (olive tree) ἐγένου (have become),

¹⁴ ἡγίασται (Is sanctified) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) ἀνὴρ (husband) ὁ (-) ἄπιστος (unbelieving), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) γυναικί (wife); καὶ (and) ἡγίασται (is sanctified) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) ἡ (-) ἄπιστος (unbelieving), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (husband); ἐπεὶ (else) ἄρα (then) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀκάθαρτά (unclean) ἐστιν (are); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἅγιά (holy) ἐστιν (they are).

¹⁸ βουληθεὶς (Having willed it), ἀπεκύησεν (He brought forth) ἡμᾶς (us) λόγῳ (by the word) ἀληθείας (of truth), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπαρχήν (firstfruits) τινα (a certain) τῶν (-) αὐτοῦ (of His) κτισμάτων (creatures).

⁴ οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἳ (they who) μετὰ (with) γυναικῶν (women) οὐκ (not) ἐμολύνθησαν (have not been defiled); παρθένοι (pure) γάρ (for) εἰσιν (they are), οὗτοι (these) οἱ (-) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) τῷ (the) Ἀρνίῳ (Lamb) ὅπου (wherever) ἂν (-) ὑπάγῃ (He shall go). οὗτοι (These) ἠγοράσθησαν (have been redeemed) ἀπὸ (out from) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἀπαρχὴ (as firstfruits) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) Ἀρνίῳ (Lamb).

¹¹ λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πολλοὶ (many) ἀπὸ (from) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) δυσμῶν (west) ἥξουσιν (will come), καὶ (and) ἀνακλιθήσονται (will recline) μετὰ (with) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) καὶ (and) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) καὶ (and) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens); ¹² οἱ (the) δὲ (however) υἱοὶ (sons) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) ἐκβληθήσονται (will be cast out), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) τὸ (the) ἐξώτερον (outer), ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth).”

⁴³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) δοθήσεται (it will be given) ἔθνει (to a people) ποιοῦντι (producing) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) αὐτῆς (of it).

² πᾶν (Every) κλῆμα (branch) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μὴ (not) φέρον (bearing) καρπὸν (fruit), αἴρει (He takes away) αὐτό (it); καὶ (and) πᾶν (every one) τὸ (-) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρον (bearing), καθαίρει (He prunes) αὐτὸ (it), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πλείονα (more) φέρῃ (it may bear).

⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned).

³⁹ ὑμῖν (To you) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) τέκνοις (children) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (those) εἰς (at) μακρὰν (a distance), ὅσους (as many as) ἂν (-) προσκαλέσηται (shall call to Himself) Κύριος (the Lord), ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) ἡμῶν (of us).”

¹⁵ Ἡμεῖς (We), φύσει (by birth) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles) ‘Ἁμαρτωλοί (sinners),’

¹¹ Διὸ (Therefore) μνημονεύετε (remember) ὅτι (that) ποτὲ (formerly) ὑμεῖς (you) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), οἱ (the ones) λεγόμενοι (being called) ἀκροβυστία (the uncircumcision) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (that) λεγομένης (being called) περιτομῆς (the circumcision), ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) χειροποιήτου (made by hands)— ¹² ὅτι (that) ἦτε (you were) τῷ (at the) καιρῷ (time) ἐκείνῳ (that) χωρὶς (separate from) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι (alienated from) τῆς (the) πολιτείας (commonwealth) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), καὶ (and) ξένοι (strangers) τῶν (to the) διαθηκῶν (covenants) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise), ἐλπίδα (hope) μὴ (not) ἔχοντες (having) καὶ (and) ἄθεοι (without God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world). ¹³ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ὑμεῖς (you) οἵ (the ones) ποτε (once) ὄντες (being) μακρὰν (far off) ἐγενήθητε (have become) ἐγγὺς (near) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

⁶ εἶναι (are) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) συνκληρονόμα (joint-heirs), καὶ (and) σύσσωμα (a joint-body), καὶ (and) συμμέτοχα (joint-partakers) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel),

¹³ Καὶ (And) ὑμᾶς (you) νεκροὺς (dead) ὄντας (being) ‹ἐν› (in) τοῖς (the) παραπτώμασιν (trespasses) καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) ἀκροβυστίᾳ (uncircumcision) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you), συνεζωοποίησεν (He made alive together) ὑμᾶς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), χαρισάμενος (having forgiven) ἡμῖν (us) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (transgressions),

⁴ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) αἱ (the) δύο (two) ἐλαῖαι (olive trees) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δύο (two) λυχνίαι (lampstands) αἱ (-) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth) ἑστῶτες (standing).

³³ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Εἰ (If) πάντες (all) σκανδαλισθήσονται (will fall away) ἐν (because of) σοί (You), ἐγὼ (I) οὐδέποτε (never) σκανδαλισθήσομαι (will fall away).”

⁹ Εἶπεν (He spoke) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) πρός (to) τινας (some) τοὺς (-) πεποιθότας (trusting) ἐφ’ (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ὅτι (that) εἰσὶν (they are) δίκαιοι (righteous), καὶ (and) ἐξουθενοῦντας (despising) τοὺς (the) λοιποὺς (others), τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this): ¹⁰ “Ἄνθρωποι (Men) δύο (two) ἀνέβησαν (went up) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) προσεύξασθαι (to pray), ὁ (the) εἷς (one) Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἕτερος (other) τελώνης (a tax collector). ¹¹ ὁ (The) Φαρισαῖος (Pharisee), σταθεὶς (having stood), ταῦτα (thus) «πρὸς (toward) ἑαυτὸν» (himself) προσηύχετο (was praying), Ὁ (-) ‘Θεός (God), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ὥσπερ (like) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest) τῶν (of the) ἀνθρώπων (men) — ἅρπαγες (swindlers), ἄδικοι (unrighteous), μοιχοί (adulterers) — ἢ (or) καὶ (even) ὡς (like) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) τελώνης (tax collector).

²² ὑμεῖς (You) προσκυνεῖτε (worship) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know); ἡμεῖς (we) προσκυνοῦμεν (worship) ὃ (what) οἴδαμεν (we know), ὅτι (for) ἡ (-) σωτηρία (salvation) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ἐστίν (is).

¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἄλλα (other) πρόβατα (sheep) ἔχω (I have), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) αὐλῆς (fold) ταύτης (this); κἀκεῖνα (those also) δεῖ (it behooves) με (Me) ἀγαγεῖν (to bring), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούσουσιν (they will hear); καὶ (and) γενήσονται* (there will be) μία (one) ποίμνη (flock), εἷς (with one) ποιμήν (shepherd).

²⁷ Ποῦ (Where) οὖν (then is) ἡ (the) καύχησις (boasting)? ἐξεκλείσθη (It has been excluded). διὰ (Through) ποίου (what) νόμου (principle)? τῶν (That) ἔργων (of works)? οὐχί (No), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (through) νόμου (the principle) πίστεως (of faith).

¹⁶ Διὰ (Therefore) τοῦτο (it is) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith), ἵνα (that it may be) κατὰ (according to) χάριν (grace), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) βεβαίαν (sure) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) σπέρματι (seed), οὐ (not) τῷ (to that) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τῷ (to that) ἐκ (of the) πίστεως (faith) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) πατὴρ (the father) πάντων (of all) ἡμῶν (of us) —

²⁰ καλῶς (Rightly so); τῇ (by the) ἀπιστίᾳ (unbelief) ἐξεκλάσθησαν (they were broken off); σὺ (you) δὲ (however) τῇ (-) πίστει (by faith) ἕστηκας (stand). μὴ (Not) ὑψηλὰ (high) φρόνει (be minded), ἀλλὰ (but) φοβοῦ (be afraid).

¹² Ὥστε (Therefore) ὁ (the one) δοκῶν (thinking) ἑστάναι (to stand), βλεπέτω (let him take heed), μὴ (lest) πέσῃ (he fall).

²⁹ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὑμεῖς (you are) Χριστοῦ (Christ’s), ἄρα (then) τοῦ (-) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham’s) σπέρμα (seed) ἐστέ (you are), κατ’ (according to) ἐπαγγελίαν (the promise) κληρονόμοι (heirs).

¹⁹ Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐστὲ (are you) ξένοι (strangers) καὶ (and) πάροικοι (aliens), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐστὲ (are) συμπολῖται (fellow citizens) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) καὶ (and) οἰκεῖοι (of the household) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ²⁰ ἐποικοδομηθέντες (having been built) ἐπὶ (upon) τῷ (the) θεμελίῳ (foundation) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) καὶ (and) προφητῶν (prophets), ὄντος (being) ἀκρογωνιαίου (the cornerstone) αὐτοῦ (Himself) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus),

²³ κἀκεῖνοι (Even they) δέ (now) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἐπιμένωσιν (they continue) τῇ (-) ἀπιστίᾳ (in unbelief), ἐνκεντρισθήσονται (will be grafted in); δυνατὸς (able) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πάλιν (again) ἐνκεντρίσαι (to graft in) αὐτούς (them). ²⁴ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) σὺ (you), ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) κατὰ (according to) φύσιν (nature) ἐξεκόπης (were cut off) ἀγριελαίου (a wild olive tree), καὶ (and), παρὰ (contrary to) φύσιν (nature), ἐνεκεντρίσθης (were grafted) εἰς (into) καλλιέλαιον (a cultivated olive tree), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) οὗτοι (these), οἱ (who) κατὰ (according to) φύσιν (nature are), ἐνκεντρισθήσονται (will be grafted into) τῇ (the) ἰδίᾳ (own) ἐλαίᾳ (olive tree)!

¹⁴ λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), κατέβη (went down) οὗτος (this one) δεδικαιωμένος (justified) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρ’ (rather than) ἐκεῖνον (that). ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

¹⁷ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) ‹αὐτῷ› (to Him) “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχω (I have) ἄνδρα (a husband).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Καλῶς (Correctly) εἶπας* (you have spoken) ὅτι (-), ‘Ἄνδρα (A husband) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have).’ ¹⁸ πέντε (Five) γὰρ (for) ἄνδρας (husbands) ἔσχες (you have had), καὶ (and) νῦν (now) ὃν (he whom) ἔχεις (you have), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) σου (your) ἀνήρ (husband); τοῦτο (this) ἀληθὲς (truly) εἴρηκας (you have spoken).”

⁴⁶ Παρρησιασάμενοί (Having spoken boldly) τε (also), ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) εἶπαν (said), “Ὑμῖν (To you) ἦν (it was) ἀναγκαῖον (necessary) πρῶτον (first) λαληθῆναι (to be spoken) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ἐπειδὴ (but since) ἀπωθεῖσθε (you thrust away) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀξίους (worthy) κρίνετε (you judge) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τῆς (-) αἰωνίου (of eternal) ζωῆς (life), ἰδοὺ (behold), στρεφόμεθα (we are turning) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles). ⁴⁷ οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἐντέταλται (has commanded) ἡμῖν (us) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord): ‘Τέθεικά (I have set) σε (you) εἰς (for) φῶς (a light) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), τοῦ (-) εἶναί (to be) σε (you) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἕως (to) ἐσχάτου (the uttermost part) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth).’”

³ Τί (What) γάρ (for) εἰ (if) ἠπίστησάν (disbelieved) τινες (some)? μὴ (Not) ἡ (the) ἀπιστία (unbelief) αὐτῶν (of them), τὴν (the) πίστιν (faithfulness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καταργήσει (will nullify)?

¹ Δικαιωθέντες (Having been justified) οὖν (therefore) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχομεν* (we have) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ² δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) καὶ (also) τὴν (-) προσαγωγὴν (access) ἐσχήκαμεν (we have) τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) ταύτην (this) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἑστήκαμεν (we stand); καὶ (and) καυχώμεθα (we boast) ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁸ μὴ (not) κατακαυχῶ (boast over) τῶν (the) κλάδων (branches). εἰ (If) δὲ (now) κατακαυχᾶσαι (you boast against them), οὐ (not) σὺ (you) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) βαστάζεις (support), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) ῥίζα (root) σέ (you).

¹⁶ τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same thing) εἰς (toward) ἀλλήλους (one another) φρονοῦντες (minding), μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ὑψηλὰ (haughty) φρονοῦντες (minding), ἀλλὰ (but) τοῖς (with the) ταπεινοῖς (lowly) συναπαγόμενοι (going along). μὴ (Not) γίνεσθε (be) φρόνιμοι (wise) παρ’ (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves).

¹³ Γρηγορεῖτε (Watch you); στήκετε (stand firm) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith); ἀνδρίζεσθε (act like men); κραταιοῦσθε (be strong).

²⁴ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) κυριεύομεν (we lord it over) ὑμῶν (your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλὰ (but) συνεργοί (fellow workers) ἐσμεν (are) τῆς (of the) χαρᾶς (joy) ὑμῶν (with you); τῇ (in the) γὰρ (for) πίστει (faith) ἑστήκατε (you stand firm).

⁵ λογισμοὺς (arguments) καθαιροῦντες (overthrowing), καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) ὕψωμα (high thing) ἐπαιρόμενον (lifting itself up) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) γνώσεως (knowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντες (taking captive) πᾶν (every) νόημα (thought) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ὑπακοὴν (obedience) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹² Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved) μου (of me), καθὼς (just as) πάντοτε (always) ὑπηκούσατε (you have obeyed), μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (presence) μου (of me) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) νῦν (now) πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπουσίᾳ (absence) μου (of me), μετὰ (with) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) τρόμου (trembling) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῶν (your own) σωτηρίαν (salvation) κατεργάζεσθε (work out).

⁷ ἐρριζωμένοι (having been rooted) καὶ (and) ἐποικοδομούμενοι (being built up) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) βεβαιούμενοι (being strengthened in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) καθὼς (just as) ἐδιδάχθητε (you were taught), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (with) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving).

⁴ ὁ (the one) ἀντικείμενος (opposing) καὶ (and) ὑπεραιρόμενος (exalting himself) ἐπὶ (above) πάντα (every) λεγόμενον (so-called) Θεὸν (god) ἢ (or) σέβασμα (object of worship), ὥστε (so as for) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καθίσαι (to sit down), ἀποδεικνύντα (setting forth) ἑαυτὸν (he himself) ὅτι (that) ἔστιν (is) Θεός (God).

¹⁷ Τοῖς (To the) πλουσίοις (rich) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age), παράγγελλε (instruct them) μὴ (not) ὑψηλοφρονεῖν (to be high-minded), μηδὲ (nor) ἠλπικέναι (to have hope) ἐπὶ (in) πλούτου (of riches) ἀδηλότητι (the uncertainty), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπὶ (on) Θεῷ (God) τῷ (the One) παρέχοντι (providing) ἡμῖν (us) πάντα (all things) πλουσίως (richly) εἰς (for) ἀπόλαυσιν (enjoyment),

³ ἄστοργοι (unloving), ἄσπονδοι (implacable), διάβολοι (slanderous), ἀκρατεῖς (without self-control), ἀνήμεροι (savage), ἀφιλάγαθοι (without love of good), ⁴ προδόται (treacherous), προπετεῖς (reckless), τετυφωμένοι (puffed up), φιλήδονοι (lovers of pleasure) μᾶλλον (rather) ἢ (than) φιλόθεοι (lovers of God), ⁵ ἔχοντες (having) μόρφωσιν (a form) εὐσεβείας (of godliness) τὴν (-) δὲ (but) δύναμιν (the power) αὐτῆς (of it) ἠρνημένοι (denying). καὶ (And) τούτους (these) ἀποτρέπου (turn away from).

¹² Βλέπετε (Take heed), ἀδελφοί (brothers), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) ἔσται (there will be) ἔν (in) τινι (any) ὑμῶν (of you) καρδία (a heart) πονηρὰ (evil) ἀπιστίας (of unbelief), ἐν (into) τῷ (-) ἀποστῆναι (falling away) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ζῶντος (the living).

¹⁹ καὶ (And) βλέπομεν (we see) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθησαν (they were able) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in) δι’ (because of) ἀπιστίαν (unbelief).

⁶ Ἐπεὶ (Since) οὖν (therefore) ἀπολείπεται (it remains for) τινὰς (some) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) πρότερον (formerly) εὐαγγελισθέντες (having received the good news), οὐκ (not) εἰσῆλθον (did enter in) δι’ (because of) ἀπείθειαν (disobedience),

¹¹ Σπουδάσωμεν (We should be diligent) οὖν (therefore) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) κατάπαυσιν (rest), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) τις (anyone) ὑποδείγματι (example) πέσῃ (should fall) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience).

¹⁹ σὺ (You) πιστεύεις (believe) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). καλῶς (Well) ποιεῖς (you are doing)! καὶ (Even) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons) πιστεύουσιν (believe that), καὶ (and) φρίσσουσιν (shudder)!

⁶ μείζονα (Greater) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace). διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (gives) χάριν (grace).”

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) εἰ (if) Πατέρα (as Father) ἐπικαλεῖσθε (you call on) τὸν (the One) ἀπροσωπολήμπτως (impartially) κρίνοντα (judging) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ἑκάστου (of each) ἔργον (work), ἐν (in) φόβῳ (fear) τὸν (during the) τῆς (of the) παροικίας (sojourn) ὑμῶν (of you) χρόνον (time) ἀναστράφητε (conduct yourselves),

⁵ Ὁμοίως (Likewise), νεώτεροι (younger ones), ὑποτάγητε (be subject) πρεσβυτέροις (to your elders). πάντες (All) δὲ (now) ἀλλήλοις (one to another) τὴν (-) ταπεινοφροσύνην (humility) ἐγκομβώσασθε (gird on), ὅτι (because), “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace).” ⁶ Ταπεινώθητε (Be humbled) οὖν (therefore) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) κραταιὰν (mighty) χεῖρα (hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) ὑψώσῃ (He may exalt) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (due time),

⁹ ᾧ (whom) ἀντίστητε (you should resist), στερεοὶ (firm) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), εἰδότες (knowing) τὰ (the) αὐτὰ (same) τῶν (-) παθημάτων (sufferings) τῇ (-) ἐν (throughout) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὑμῶν (in your) ἀδελφότητι (brotherhood) ἐπιτελεῖσθαι (to be accomplished).

¹² Διὰ (Through) Σιλουανοῦ (Silvanus), ὑμῖν (to you) τοῦ (the) πιστοῦ (faithful) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) ὡς (as) λογίζομαι (I regard him), δι’ (through) ὀλίγων (few words) ἔγραψα (I have written), παρακαλῶν (exhorting) καὶ (and) ἐπιμαρτυρῶν (testifying) ταύτην (this) εἶναι (to be) ἀληθῆ (the true) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (in) ἣν (which) στῆτε (you stand).

¹⁷ Ὅτι (For) λέγεις (you say) ὅτι (-), ‘Πλούσιός (Rich) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) πεπλούτηκα (I have grown rich), καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (of nothing) χρείαν (need) ἔχω (I have).’ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) οἶδας (do you realize) ὅτι (that) σὺ (you) εἶ (are) ὁ (-) ταλαίπωρος (wretched), καὶ (and) ἐλεεινὸς (miserable), καὶ (and) πτωχὸς (poor), καὶ (and) τυφλὸς (blind), καὶ (and) γυμνός (naked).

⁷ ὅσα (So much as) ἐδόξασεν (she has glorified) αὑτὴν (herself) καὶ (and) ἐστρηνίασεν (lived in luxury), τοσοῦτον (as much) δότε (give) αὐτῇ (to her) βασανισμὸν (torment) καὶ (and) πένθος (misery), ὅτι (because) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτῆς (of herself) λέγει (she says) ὅτι (-), ‘Κάθημαι (I sit) βασίλισσα (as a queen), καὶ (and) χήρα (a widow) οὐκ (never) εἰμί (I am), καὶ (and) πένθος (mourning) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἴδω (shall I see).’

³² ὅς (He who) γε (indeed) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) Υἱοῦ (Son) οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) πάντων (all) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτόν (Him), πῶς (how) οὐχὶ (not) καὶ (also) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ἡμῖν (us) χαρίσεται (will He grant)?

¹⁹ Ἐρεῖς (You will say) οὖν (then), “Ἐξεκλάσθησαν (Were broken off) κλάδοι (branches), ἵνα (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἐγκεντρισθῶ (might be grafted in).”

¹ Οὐ (Not) θέλω (I want) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us) πάντες (all) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) νεφέλην (cloud) ἦσαν (were), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (sea) διῆλθον (passed), ² καὶ (and) πάντες (all) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) Μωϋσῆν (Moses) ἐβαπτίσαντο (were baptized), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νεφέλῃ (cloud) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θαλάσσῃ (sea), ³ καὶ (and) πάντες (all) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) πνευματικὸν (spiritual) βρῶμα (food) ἔφαγον (ate), ⁴ καὶ (and) πάντες (all) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) πνευματικὸν (spiritual) ἔπιον (drank) πόμα (drink); ἔπινον (they were drinking) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (from) πνευματικῆς (the spiritual) ἀκολουθούσης (accompanying them) πέτρας (rock); ἡ (the) πέτρα (rock) δὲ (then) ἦν (was) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ). ⁵ ἀλλ’ (Nevertheless) οὐκ (not) ἐν (with) τοῖς (-) πλείοσιν (most) αὐτῶν (of them) εὐδόκησεν (was well pleased) ὁ (-) Θεός (God); κατεστρώθησαν (they were strewn) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness). ⁶ Ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (now), τύποι (types) ἡμῶν (to us) ἐγενήθησαν (have become), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) εἶναι (to be) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐπιθυμητὰς (desirers) κακῶν (of evil things), καθὼς (as) κἀκεῖνοι (they also) ἐπεθύμησαν (desired). ⁷ μηδὲ (Neither) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters) γίνεσθε (are you to be), καθώς (as) τινες (some) αὐτῶν (of them); ὥσπερ (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἐκάθισεν (Sat down) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) φαγεῖν (to eat) καὶ (and) πεῖν (to drink), καὶ (and) ἀνέστησαν (rose up) παίζειν (to play).” ⁸ μηδὲ (Neither) πορνεύωμεν (should we commit sexual immorality), καθώς (as) τινες (some) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπόρνευσαν (committed sexual immorality), καὶ (and) ἔπεσαν (fell) μιᾷ (in one) ἡμέρᾳ (day) εἰκοσι (twenty) τρεῖς (three) χιλιάδες (thousand). ⁹ μηδὲ (Neither) ἐκπειράζωμεν (should we test) τὸν (the) Χριστόν* (Christ), καθώς (as) τινες (some) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπείρασαν (tested), καὶ (and) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (-) ὄφεων (serpents) ἀπώλλυντο (were destroyed). ¹⁰ μηδὲ (Neither) γογγύζετε (are you to grumble), καθάπερ (as) τινὲς (some) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐγόγγυσαν (grumbled), καὶ (and) ἀπώλοντο (perished) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) ὀλοθρευτοῦ (Destroyer). ¹¹ Ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (now) τυπικῶς (as types) συνέβαινεν (happened) ἐκείνοις (to them), ἐγράφη (were written) δὲ (then) πρὸς (for) νουθεσίαν (admonition) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) οὓς (whom) τὰ (the) τέλη (ends) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages) κατήντηκεν (are arrived). ¹² Ὥστε (Therefore) ὁ (the one) δοκῶν (thinking) ἑστάναι (to stand), βλεπέτω (let him take heed), μὴ (lest) πέσῃ (he fall).

⁴ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγγέλων (the angels) ἁμαρτησάντων (having sinned), οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), ἀλλὰ (but) σειραῖς* (in chains) ζόφου (of gloomy darkness) ταρταρώσας (having cast them down to Tartarus), παρέδωκεν (delivered them), εἰς (for) κρίσιν (judgment) τηρουμένους (being kept); ⁵ καὶ (and) ἀρχαίου (the ancient) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (He spared), ἀλλὰ (but) ὄγδοον (one of eight), Νῶε (Noah) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) κήρυκα (a herald) ἐφύλαξεν (preserved), κατακλυσμὸν (the flood upon) κόσμῳ (the world) ἀσεβῶν (of the ungodly) ἐπάξας (having brought in); ⁶ καὶ (and) πόλεις (the cities) Σοδόμων (of Sodom) καὶ (and) Γομόρρας (Gomorrah) τεφρώσας (having reduced to ashes), καταστροφῇ (to destruction) κατέκρινεν (He condemned them), ὑπόδειγμα (an example) μελλόντων (of what is coming on) ‹ἀσεβέσιν› (the ungodly) τεθεικώς (having set); ⁷ καὶ (and) δίκαιον (righteous) Λὼτ (Lot), καταπονούμενον (being distressed) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) τῶν (of the) ἀθέσμων (lawless) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείᾳ (sensuality) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct), ἐρρύσατο (He rescued) — ⁸ βλέμματι (through seeing) γὰρ (for) καὶ (and) ἀκοῇ (hearing) ὁ (that) δίκαιος (righteous man), ἐνκατοικῶν (dwelling) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them) ἡμέραν (day) ἐξ (after) ἡμέρας (day), ψυχὴν (in his soul) δικαίαν (righteous) ἀνόμοις (with their lawless) ἔργοις (deeds) ἐβασάνιζεν (was tormented) — ⁹ οἶδεν (then knows) Κύριος (the Lord) εὐσεβεῖς (the devout) ἐκ (out of) πειρασμοῦ (temptation) ῥύεσθαι (to deliver); ἀδίκους (the unrighteous) δὲ (then) εἰς (unto) ἡμέραν (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) κολαζομένους (being punished) τηρεῖν (to keep);

⁵ Ὑπομνῆσαι (To remind) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you) βούλομαι (I want), εἰδότας (having known) ‹ὑμᾶς› (you) ἅπαξ (at one time) «πάντα (all this), ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς» (Jesus) λαὸν (a people) ἐκ (out of) γῆς (the land) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt) σώσας (having saved), τὸ (-) δεύτερον (afterward) τοὺς (those) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντας (having believed), ἀπώλεσεν (He destroyed).

⁹ καὶ (And) μὴ (not) δόξητε (presume) λέγειν (to say) ἐν (within) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves), ‘Πατέρα (As father) ἔχομεν (we have) τὸν (-) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham).’ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) δύναται (able is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) λίθων (stones) τούτων (these) ἐγεῖραι (to raise up) τέκνα (children) τῷ (unto) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham). ¹⁰ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).

¹⁵ Τὸ (That) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καλῇ (good) γῇ (soil), οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) οἵτινες (those) ἐν (in) καρδίᾳ (a heart) καλῇ (worthy) καὶ (and) ἀγαθῇ (good), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) κατέχουσιν (keep it), καὶ (and) καρποφοροῦσιν (bring forth fruit) ἐν (by) ὑπομονῇ (perseverance).

³¹ Ἔλεγεν (Was saying) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πεπιστευκότας (having believed) αὐτῷ (in Him) Ἰουδαίους (Jews), “Ἐὰν (If) ὑμεῖς (you) μείνητε (abide) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῷ (-) ἐμῷ (My), ἀληθῶς (truly) μαθηταί (disciples) μού (of Me) ἐστε (you are).

⁴ μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). καθὼς (As) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρειν (to bear) ἀφ’ (of) ἑαυτοῦ (itself), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μένῃ (it abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀμπέλῳ (vine), οὕτως (so) οὐδὲ (neither can) ὑμεῖς (you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μένητε (you abide). ⁵ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἄμπελος (vine); ὑμεῖς (you are) τὰ (the) κλήματα (branches). ὁ (The one) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), οὗτος (he) φέρει (bears) καρπὸν (fruit) πολύν (much). ὅτι (For) χωρὶς (apart from) ἐμοῦ (Me) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able) ποιεῖν (to do) οὐδέν (nothing). ⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned). ⁷ ἐὰν (If) μείνητε (you abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μείνῃ (abide), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you wish), αἰτήσασθε (you shall ask), καὶ (and) γενήσεται (it will come to pass) ὑμῖν (to you). ⁸ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐδοξάσθη (is glorified) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πολὺν (much) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) γένησθε* (you shall be) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples). ⁹ Καθὼς (As) ἠγάπησέν (has loved) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἠγάπησα (have loved). μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) τῇ (-) ἐμῇ (of Me). ¹⁰ ἐὰν (If) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) τηρήσητε (you keep), μενεῖτε (you will abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) μου (of Me), καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I), «τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου» (of Me) «τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς» (commandments) τετήρηκα (have kept), καὶ (and) μένω (I abide) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love).

²³ ὃς (who) παραγενόμενος (having come) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἐχάρη (rejoiced) καὶ (and) παρεκάλει (was exhorting) πάντας (all) τῇ (with) προθέσει (resolute purpose) τῆς (-) καρδίας (of heart) προσμένειν (to abide) (ἐν) (in) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord).

²² ἐπιστηρίζοντες (strengthening) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting them) ἐμμένειν (to continue) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) “Διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) θλίψεων (tribulations) δεῖ (it behooves) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

⁴ ἢ (Or) τοῦ (the) πλούτου (riches) τῆς (of the) χρηστότητος (kindness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἀνοχῆς (forbearance), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) μακροθυμίας (patience) καταφρονεῖς (despise you), ἀγνοῶν (not knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) χρηστὸν (kindness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰς (to) μετάνοιάν (repentance) σε (you) ἄγει (leads)? ⁵ Κατὰ (Because of) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) σκληρότητά (hardness) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἀμετανόητον (unrepentant) καρδίαν (heart), θησαυρίζεις (you are treasuring up) σεαυτῷ (to yourself) ὀργὴν (wrath) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ὀργῆς (of wrath) καὶ (and) ἀποκαλύψεως (revelation) δικαιοκρισίας (of righteous judgement) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

⁷ τοῖς (to those who) μὲν (indeed) καθ’ (with) ὑπομονὴν (endurance) ἔργου (in work) ἀγαθοῦ (good), δόξαν (glory) καὶ (and) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) ἀφθαρσίαν (immortality) ζητοῦσιν (are seeking), ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal);

²² Εἰ (What if) δὲ (now) θέλων (desiring) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐνδείξασθαι (to show) τὴν (the) ὀργὴν (wrath) καὶ (and) γνωρίσαι (to make known) τὸ (the) δυνατὸν (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἤνεγκεν (bore) ἐν (with) πολλῇ (much) μακροθυμίᾳ (patience), σκεύη (the vessels) ὀργῆς (of wrath), κατηρτισμένα (having been fitted) εἰς (for) ἀπώλειαν (destruction), ²³ καὶ (also) ἵνα (that) γνωρίσῃ (He might make known) τὸν (the) πλοῦτον (riches) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (upon) σκεύη (the vessels) ἐλέους (of mercy), ἃ (which) προητοίμασεν (He prepared beforehand) εἰς (for) δόξαν (glory),

² δι’ (by) οὗ (which) καὶ (also) σῴζεσθε (you are being saved), τίνι (to the) λόγῳ (word) εὐηγγελισάμην (I proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), εἰ (if) κατέχετε (you hold fast); ἐκτὸς (unless) εἰ (if) μὴ (not), εἰκῇ (in vain) ἐπιστεύσατε (you have believed).

⁹ Τὸ (-) δὲ (And) καλὸν (in well) ποιοῦντες (doing), μὴ (not) ἐνκακῶμεν (we should grow weary); καιρῷ (in time) γὰρ (for) ἰδίῳ (due), θερίσομεν (we will reap a harvest) μὴ (not) ἐκλυόμενοι (giving up).

⁵ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) κἀγὼ (I also), μηκέτι (no longer) στέγων (enduring), ἔπεμψα (sent) εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) γνῶναι (to know) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), μή (lest) πως (somehow) ἐπείρασεν (had tempted) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the one) πειράζων (tempting), καὶ (and) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) γένηται (would be) ὁ (the) κόπος (labor) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁸ ὅτι (For) νῦν (now) ζῶμεν (we live), ἐὰν (if) ὑμεῖς (you) στήκετε (are standing firm) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

⁶ Χριστὸς (Christ) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) υἱὸς (the Son) ἐπὶ (over) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of Him), οὗ (whose) οἶκός (house) ἐσμεν (are) ἡμεῖς (we), ἐὰν (if indeed) τὴν (our) παρρησίαν (confidence), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boast) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

¹⁴ Μέτοχοι (Partakers) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) γεγόναμεν (we have become), ἐάνπερ (if indeed) τὴν (from the) ἀρχὴν (beginning) τῆς (the) ὑποστάσεως (assurance) μέχρι (unto) τέλους (the end) βεβαίαν (firm) κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

²³ Κατέχωμεν (We should hold fast) τὴν (to the) ὁμολογίαν (confession) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), ἀκλινῆ (firmly); πιστὸς (faithful) γὰρ (for is) ὁ (the One) ἐπαγγειλάμενος (having promised).

³⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀποβάλητε (throw away) οὖν (therefore) τὴν (the) παρρησίαν (boldness) ὑμῶν (of you), ἥτις (which) ἔχει (has) μεγάλην (a great) μισθαποδοσίαν (reward). ³⁶ ὑπομονῆς (Of endurance) γὰρ (for) ἔχετε (You have) χρείαν (need), ἵνα (so that), τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ποιήσαντες (having done), κομίσησθε (you may receive) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise). ³⁷ ἔτι (Yet) γὰρ (for), “Μικρὸν (A little) ὅσον (very) ὅσον (while), ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἥξει (will come), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) χρονίσει (will delay). ³⁸ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) δίκαιός (righteous) μου (of Mine) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) ζήσεται (will live); καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) ὑποστείληται (he might shrink back), οὐκ (not) εὐδοκεῖ (takes pleasure) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).” ³⁹ Ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) ἐσμὲν (are) ὑποστολῆς (of those drawing back) εἰς (to) ἀπώλειαν (destruction), ἀλλὰ (but) πίστεως (of faith) εἰς (to) περιποίησιν (the preserving) ψυχῆς (of the soul).

¹⁹ ἐξ (From among) ἡμῶν (us) ἐξῆλθαν (they went out), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἦσαν (they were) ἐξ (of) ἡμῶν (us); εἰ (if) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (of) ἡμῶν (us) ἦσαν (they had been), μεμενήκεισαν (they would have remained) ἂν (-) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us). ἀλλ’ (But) ἵνα (it is so that) φανερωθῶσιν (it might be made manifest) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (they are) πάντες (all) ἐξ (of) ἡμῶν (us).

²⁰ Ὑμεῖς (You) δέ (however), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ἐποικοδομοῦντες (building up) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves), τῇ (in the) ἁγιωτάτῃ (most holy) ὑμῶν (of you) πίστει (faith) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) προσευχόμενοι (praying), ²¹ ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (the love) Θεοῦ (of God) τηρήσατε (keep), προσδεχόμενοι (awaiting) τὸ (the) ἔλεος (mercy) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

⁵ μνημόνευε (Remember) οὖν (therefore) πόθεν (from where) πέπτωκας* (you have fallen), καὶ (and) μετανόησον (repent), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πρῶτα (first) ἔργα (works) ποίησον (do). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) μή (not), ἔρχομαί (I am coming) σοι (to you), καὶ (and) κινήσω (I will remove) τὴν (the) λυχνίαν (lampstand) σου (of you) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) αὐτῆς (of it), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοήσῃς (you should repent).

³⁹ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μή (not) με (Me) ἴδητε (shall you see) ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) εἴπητε (you say), ‘Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).’”

¹⁶ ἡνίκα (Whenever) δὲ (however) ἐὰν (if) ἐπιστρέψῃ (one shall have turned) πρὸς (to) Κύριον (the Lord), περιαιρεῖται (is taken away) τὸ (the) κάλυμμα (veil).

¹⁷ Εἰ (If) δέ (however) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) κλάδων (branches) ἐξεκλάσθησαν (were broken off), σὺ (you) δὲ (now), ἀγριέλαιος (a wild olive tree) ὢν (being), ἐνεκεντρίσθης (were grafted in) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) συνκοινωνὸς (a fellow-partaker) τῆς (of the) ῥίζης (root) τῆς (of the) πιότητος (fatness) τῆς (of the) ἐλαίας (olive tree) ἐγένου (have become), ¹⁸ μὴ (not) κατακαυχῶ (boast over) τῶν (the) κλάδων (branches). εἰ (If) δὲ (now) κατακαυχᾶσαι (you boast against them), οὐ (not) σὺ (you) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) βαστάζεις (support), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) ῥίζα (root) σέ (you).

³⁰ Ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you) ποτε (once) ἠπειθήσατε (were disobedient) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἠλεήθητε (have been shown mercy) τῇ (the) τούτων (of these) ἀπειθείᾳ (disobedience),

²⁴ καὶ (And) πεσοῦνται (they will fall) στόματι (by the edge) μαχαίρης (of the sword), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται (will be led captive) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations); πάντα (all) καὶ (and) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἔσται (will be) πατουμένη (trodden down) ὑπὸ (by) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) πληρωθῶσιν (are fulfilled) καιροὶ (the times) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles).

¹³ Οὐ (Not) θέλω (I do want) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) πολλάκις (many times) προεθέμην (I purposed) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἐκωλύθην (was hindered), ἄχρι (until) τοῦ (the) δεῦρο (present), ἵνα (that) τινὰ (some) καρπὸν (fruit) σχῶ (I might have) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (as) καὶ (even) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) λοιποῖς (other) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles).

⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ὃ (What) ἐπιζητεῖ (is seeking) Ἰσραήλ (Israel), τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐπέτυχεν (it has obtained); ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ἐκλογὴ (the elect) ἐπέτυχεν (obtained it). οἱ (The) δὲ (now) λοιποὶ (rest) ἐπωρώθησαν (were hardened), ⁸ καθὼς* (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἔδωκεν (Gave) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πνεῦμα (a spirit) κατανύξεως (of stupor), ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) βλέπειν (to see), καὶ (and) ὦτα (ears) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) ἀκούειν (to hear), ἕως (unto) τῆς (the) σήμερον (today) ἡμέρας (day).”

²⁵ Τῷ (To Him) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) ὑμᾶς (you) στηρίξαι (to strengthen), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) εὐαγγέλιόν (gospel) μου (my) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (preaching) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), κατὰ (according to) ἀποκάλυψιν (the revelation) μυστηρίου (of the mystery), χρόνοις (in times) αἰωνίοις (of the ages) σεσιγημένου (having been kept secret),

¹ Οὐ (Not) θέλω (I want) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us) πάντες (all) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) νεφέλην (cloud) ἦσαν (were), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (sea) διῆλθον (passed),

¹ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῶν (-) πνευματικῶν (spiritual gifts), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant).

¹⁴ Ἀλλὰ (But) ἐπωρώθη (were hardened) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) αὐτῶν (of them). ἄχρι (Until) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) σήμερον (present) ἡμέρας (day), τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) κάλυμμα (veil) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) ἀναγνώσει (reading) τῆς (of the) παλαιᾶς (old) διαθήκης (covenant) μένει (remains), μὴ (not) ἀνακαλυπτόμενον (being lifted), ὅτι (which) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) καταργεῖται (is being removed). ¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (But) ἕως (unto) σήμερον (this day), ἡνίκα (when) ἂν (-) ἀναγινώσκηται (shall be read) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), κάλυμμα (a veil) ἐπὶ (over) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) αὐτῶν (of them) κεῖται (lies). ¹⁶ ἡνίκα (Whenever) δὲ (however) ἐὰν (if) ἐπιστρέψῃ (one shall have turned) πρὸς (to) Κύριον (the Lord), περιαιρεῖται (is taken away) τὸ (the) κάλυμμα (veil).

³ ὅτι (that) κατὰ (by) ἀποκάλυψιν (revelation) ἐγνωρίσθη (He made known) μοι (to me) τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery), καθὼς (just as) προέγραψα (I have written before) ἐν (in) ὀλίγῳ (brief), ⁴ πρὸς (by) ὃ (which) δύνασθε (you are able), ἀναγινώσκοντες (reading it), νοῆσαι (to understand) τὴν (the) σύνεσίν (insight) μου (of me) ἐν (into) τῷ (the) μυστηρίῳ (mystery) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

⁹ καὶ (and) φωτίσαι (to enlighten) ‹πάντας› (all) τίς (what is) ἡ (the) οἰκονομία (administration) τοῦ (of the) μυστηρίου (mystery) τοῦ (-) ἀποκεκρυμμένου (having been hidden) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) αἰώνων (ages) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), τῷ (the One) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) κτίσαντι (having created),

⁸ Ἓν (This one) δὲ (however) τοῦτο (thing) μὴ (not) λανθανέτω (let be hidden from) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ὅτι (that) μία (one) ἡμέρα (day) παρὰ (with the) Κυρίῳ (Lord is) ὡς (like) χίλια (a thousand) ἔτη (years), καὶ (and) χίλια (a thousand) ἔτη (years) ὡς (like) ἡμέρα (day) μία (one).

⁹ Μετὰ (After) ταῦτα (these things) εἶδον (I looked), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ὄχλος (a multitude) πολύς (great), ὃν (which) ἀριθμῆσαι (to number) αὐτὸν (it) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐδύνατο (was able), ἐκ (out of) παντὸς (every) ἔθνους (nation), καὶ (and) φυλῶν (tribes), καὶ (and) λαῶν (peoples), καὶ (and) γλωσσῶν (tongues), ἑστῶτες (standing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne) καὶ (and) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), περιβεβλημένους (having been clothed with) στολὰς (robes) λευκάς (white), καὶ (and) φοίνικες (palm branches) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) χερσὶν (hands) αὐτῶν (of them).

⁷ ἀλλ’ (But) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τῆς (of the) φωνῆς (voice) τοῦ (of the) ἑβδόμου (seventh) ἀγγέλου (angel), ὅταν (when) μέλλῃ (he is about) σαλπίζειν (to sound the trumpet), καὶ (then) ἐτελέσθη (would be completed) τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὡς (as) εὐηγγέλισεν (proclaimed) τοὺς (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) δούλους (servants), τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets).”

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) ἕβδομος (seventh) ἄγγελος (angel) ἐσάλπισεν (sounded his trumpet), καὶ (and) ἐγένοντο (there were) φωναὶ (voices) μεγάλαι (great) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), λέγοντες (saying): “Ἐγένετο (Has become) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), τοῦ (that of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Χριστοῦ (Christ) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) βασιλεύσει (He will reign) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages).”

² καὶ (And) ἐκράτησεν (he seized) τὸν (the) δράκοντα (dragon), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), καὶ (and) ἔδησεν (bound) αὐτὸν (him) χίλια (for a thousand) ἔτη (years). ³ καὶ (And) ἔβαλεν (he cast) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἄβυσσον (Abyss), καὶ (and) ἔκλεισεν (shut) καὶ (and) ἐσφράγισεν (sealed it) ἐπάνω (over) αὐτοῦ (him), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) πλανήσῃ (he should deceive) ἔτι (any longer) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), ἄχρι (until) τελεσθῇ (were completed) τὰ (the) χίλια (thousand) ἔτη (years). μετὰ (After these) ταῦτα (things), δεῖ (it is necessary for) λυθῆναι (to be released) αὐτὸν (him) μικρὸν (for a little) χρόνον (time). ⁴ ‹Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) θρόνους (thrones), καὶ (and) ἐκάθισαν (they sat) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτούς (them), καὶ (and) κρίμα (judgment) ἐδόθη (was given) αὐτοῖς (to them), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) τῶν (of those) πεπελεκισμένων (having been beheaded) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) οἵτινες (those who) οὐ (not) προσεκύνησαν (did worship) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast), οὐδὲ (nor) τὴν (the) εἰκόνα (image) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔλαβον (did take) τὸ (the) χάραγμα (mark) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸ (the) μέτωπον (forehead), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) αὐτῶν (of them). καὶ (And) ἔζησαν (they lived) καὶ (and) ἐβασίλευσαν (reigned) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (-) χριστοῦ (Christ) χίλια (a thousand) ἔτη› (years).

²¹ τέξεται (She will bear) δὲ (then) υἱὸν (a son), καὶ (and) καλέσεις (you will call) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus); αὐτὸς (He) γὰρ (for) σώσει (will save) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).”

²⁶ ὑμῖν (To you) πρῶτον (first), ἀναστήσας (having raised up) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) Παῖδα (servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀπέστειλεν (sent) αὐτὸν (Him), εὐλογοῦντα (blessing) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ἀποστρέφειν (turning away) ἕκαστον (each) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πονηριῶν (wickednesses) ὑμῶν (of you).”

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

²⁹ Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) βλέπει (he sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) αἴρων (taking away) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).

⁸ μεμφόμενος (Finding fault) γὰρ (for) αὐτοὺς (with them), λέγει (He says): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἡμέραι (the days) ἔρχονται (are coming), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), καὶ (and) συντελέσω (I will ratify) ἐπὶ (with) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (with) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) Ἰούδα (of Judah), διαθήκην (a covenant) καινήν (new), ⁹ οὐ (not) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) διαθήκην (covenant) ἣν (that) ἐποίησα (I made) τοῖς (with) πατράσιν (fathers) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ἐπιλαβομένου (of having taken hold of) μου (by Me) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐξαγαγεῖν (to lead) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐκ (out of) γῆς (the land) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt), ὅτι (because) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐκ (not) ἐνέμειναν (did continue) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διαθήκῃ (covenant) μου (of Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἠμέλησα (disregarded) αὐτῶν (them), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord). ¹⁰ ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this is) ἡ (the) διαθήκη (covenant) ἣν (that) διαθήσομαι (I will make) τῷ (with the) οἴκῳ (house) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), μετὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) ἐκείνας (those), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), διδοὺς (putting) νόμους (Laws) μου (of Me) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) διάνοιαν (mind) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) καρδίας (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπιγράψω (I will inscribe) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἔσομαι (I will be) αὐτοῖς (to them) εἰς (for) Θεόν (God), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔσονταί (will be) μοι (to Me) εἰς (for) λαόν (a people). ¹¹ καὶ (And) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) διδάξωσιν (shall they teach) ἕκαστος (each) τὸν (the) πολίτην (neighbor) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἕκαστος (each) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγων (saying), ‘Γνῶθι (Know) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord),’ ὅτι (because) πάντες (all) εἰδήσουσίν (will know) με (Me), ἀπὸ (from) μικροῦ (the least) ἕως (to the) μεγάλου (greatest) αὐτῶν (of them), ¹² ὅτι (because) ἵλεως (merciful) ἔσομαι (I will be) ταῖς (toward the) ἀδικίαις (iniquities) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) μνησθῶ (I shall remember) ἔτι (more).

¹⁶ “Αὕτη (This is) ἡ (the) διαθήκη (covenant) ἣν (that) διαθήσομαι (I will make) πρὸς (with) αὐτοὺς (them), μετὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) ἐκείνας (those), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), διδοὺς (putting) νόμους (the laws) μου (of Me) ἐπὶ (into) καρδίας (the hearts) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (into) τὴν (the) διάνοιαν (mind) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐπιγράψω (I will inscribe) αὐτούς (them),”

⁵⁴ ἀντελάβετο (He has helped) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) παιδὸς (the servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him), μνησθῆναι (remembering) ἐλέους (mercy),

⁶⁸ “Εὐλογητὸς (Blessed be) Κύριος (the Lord) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), ὅτι (because) ἐπεσκέψατο (He has visited) καὶ (and) ἐποίησεν (has performed) λύτρωσιν (redemption) τῷ (on the) λαῷ (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁶⁹ καὶ (and) ἤγειρεν (has raised up) κέρας (a horn) σωτηρίας (of salvation) ἡμῖν (for us), ἐν (in) οἴκῳ (the house) Δαυὶδ (of David) παιδὸς (of the servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ⁷⁰ καθὼς (as) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) διὰ (by) στόματος (the mouth) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (holy) ἀπ’ (of) αἰῶνος (old) προφητῶν (prophets) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁷¹ σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἐξ (from) ἐχθρῶν (the enemies) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) χειρὸς (the hand) πάντων (of all) τῶν (those) μισούντων (hating) ἡμᾶς (us); ⁷² ποιῆσαι (to fulfill) ἔλεος (mercy) μετὰ (toward) τῶν (the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) μνησθῆναι (to remember) διαθήκης (the covenant) ἁγίας (holy) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁷³ ὅρκον (the oath) ὃν (that) ὤμοσεν (He swore) πρὸς (to) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham), τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) ἡμῶν (of us), τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to grant) ἡμῖν (us), ⁷⁴ ἀφόβως (without fear), ἐκ (from) χειρὸς (the hand) ἐχθρῶν (of our enemies) ῥυσθέντας (having been saved), λατρεύειν (to serve) αὐτῷ (Him), ⁷⁵ ἐν (in) ὁσιότητι (holiness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἡμῶν (of our life).

⁴⁵ ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (however) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐπλήσθησαν (they were filled) ζήλου (with jealousy) καὶ (and) ἀντέλεγον (began contradicting) τοῖς (the things) ὑπὸ (by) Παύλου (Paul) λαλουμένοις (spoken), βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming). ⁴⁶ Παρρησιασάμενοί (Having spoken boldly) τε (also), ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) εἶπαν (said), “Ὑμῖν (To you) ἦν (it was) ἀναγκαῖον (necessary) πρῶτον (first) λαληθῆναι (to be spoken) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ἐπειδὴ (but since) ἀπωθεῖσθε (you thrust away) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀξίους (worthy) κρίνετε (you judge) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τῆς (-) αἰωνίου (of eternal) ζωῆς (life), ἰδοὺ (behold), στρεφόμεθα (we are turning) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles).

² οἱ (The) δὲ (however) ἀπειθήσαντες (unbelieving) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἐπήγειραν (stirred up) καὶ (and) ἐκάκωσαν (poisoned) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (minds) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατὰ (against) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers).

¹⁰ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for), ἐχθροὶ (enemies) ὄντες (being), κατηλλάγημεν (we were reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) θανάτου (death) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more), καταλλαγέντες (having been reconciled), σωθησόμεθα (shall we be saved) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ζωῇ (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him)!

⁵ ὧν (whose are) οἱ (the) πατέρες (patriarchs); καὶ (and) ἐξ (from) ὧν (whom is) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) τὸ (-) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh), ὁ (-) ὢν (being) ἐπὶ (over) πάντων (all) Θεὸς (God), εὐλογητὸς (blessed) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ὃ (What) ἐπιζητεῖ (is seeking) Ἰσραήλ (Israel), τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐπέτυχεν (it has obtained); ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ἐκλογὴ (the elect) ἐπέτυχεν (obtained it). οἱ (The) δὲ (now) λοιποὶ (rest) ἐπωρώθησαν (were hardened),

¹⁵ τῶν (who) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἀποκτεινάντων (having killed), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) τοὺς (their own) προφήτας (prophets), καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκδιωξάντων (having driven out), καὶ (and) Θεῷ (God) μὴ (not) ἀρεσκόντων (pleasing), καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐναντίων (who are set against), ¹⁶ κωλυόντων (hindering) ἡμᾶς (us) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) λαλῆσαι (to speak), ἵνα (that) σωθῶσιν (they might be saved), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) ἀναπληρῶσαι (to fill up) αὐτῶν (their) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins) πάντοτε (always). ἔφθασεν (Has come) δὲ (now) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτοὺς (them) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) εἰς (to the) τέλος (utmost).

²⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), πάντα (all things) συνεργεῖ (works together) (ὁ (-) θεὸς) (God) εἰς (for) ἀγαθόν (good), τοῖς (to those) κατὰ (according to) πρόθεσιν (His purpose) κλητοῖς (called) οὖσιν (being).

²¹ ὁ (He) δὲ (however) μετὰ (with) ὁρκωμοσίας (an oath), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the One) λέγοντος (saying) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him): “Ὤμοσεν (Has sworn) Κύριος (the Lord), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μεταμεληθήσεται (will change His mind), ‘Σὺ (You are) ἱερεὺς (a priest) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).’”

⁹ Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἄδικοι (the unrighteous ones) Θεοῦ (of God) βασιλείαν (the kingdom) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit)? μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be deceived): οὔτε (neither) πόρνοι (the sexually immoral), οὔτε (nor) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), οὔτε (nor) μοιχοὶ (adulterers), οὔτε (nor) μαλακοὶ (effeminate), οὔτε (nor) ἀρσενοκοῖται (homosexuals), ¹⁰ οὔτε (nor) κλέπται (thieves), οὔτε (nor) πλεονέκται (coveters), οὐ (not) μέθυσοι (drunkards), οὐ (nor) λοίδοροι (verbal abusers), οὐχ (nor) ἅρπαγες (swindlers), βασιλείαν (the kingdom) Θεοῦ (of God) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit). ¹¹ καὶ (And) ταῦτά (such) τινες (some of) ἦτε (you were); ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπελούσασθε (you were washed), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡγιάσθητε (you were sanctified), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐδικαιώθητε (you were justified), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us).

²⁵ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῶν (the) παρθένων (virgins), ἐπιταγὴν (a commandment) Κυρίου (of the Lord) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have); γνώμην (judgment) δὲ (however) δίδωμι (I give), ὡς (as) ἠλεημένος (having received mercy) ὑπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord), πιστὸς (trustworthy) εἶναι (to be).

¹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἔχοντες (having) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ταύτην (this), καθὼς (as) ἠλεήθημεν (we received mercy), οὐκ (not) ἐγκακοῦμεν (we lose heart).

¹ Καὶ (And) ὑμᾶς (you), ὄντας (being) νεκροὺς (dead) τοῖς (in the) παραπτώμασιν (trespasses) καὶ (and) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you), ² ἐν (in) αἷς (which) ποτε (once) περιεπατήσατε (you walked), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) ἄρχοντα (ruler) τῆς (of the) ἐξουσίας (authority) τοῦ (of the) ἀέρος (air), τοῦ (the) πνεύματος (spirit) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now) ἐνεργοῦντος (working) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) υἱοῖς (sons) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience),

¹⁹ Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐστὲ (are you) ξένοι (strangers) καὶ (and) πάροικοι (aliens), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐστὲ (are) συμπολῖται (fellow citizens) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) καὶ (and) οἰκεῖοι (of the household) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ²⁰ ἐποικοδομηθέντες (having been built) ἐπὶ (upon) τῷ (the) θεμελίῳ (foundation) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) καὶ (and) προφητῶν (prophets), ὄντος (being) ἀκρογωνιαίου (the cornerstone) αὐτοῦ (Himself) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ²¹ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) πᾶσα (the whole) οἰκοδομὴ (building), συναρμολογουμένη (being fitted together), αὔξει (is increasing) εἰς (into) ναὸν (a temple), ἅγιον (holy) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord),

⁷ ἐν (in) οἷς (which) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) περιεπατήσατέ (walked) ποτε (once) ὅτε (when) ἐζῆτε (you were living) ἐν (in) τούτοις (them).

¹⁸ Ταύτην (This) τὴν (-) παραγγελίαν (charge) παρατίθεμαί (I commit) σοι (to you), τέκνον (my child) Τιμόθεε (Timothy), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) προαγούσας (going before) ἐπὶ (as to) σὲ (you) προφητείας (prophecies), ἵνα (that) στρατεύῃ (you might war) ἐν (by) αὐταῖς (them) τὴν (the) καλὴν (good) στρατείαν (warfare),

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another). ⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) χρηστότης (kindness) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) φιλανθρωπία (love of mankind) ἐπεφάνη (appeared), τοῦ (of the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) τῶν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἃ (that) ἐποιήσαμεν (did) ἡμεῖς (we), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) ἔλεος (mercy), ἔσωσεν (He saved) ἡμᾶς (us) διὰ (through) λουτροῦ (the washing) παλινγενεσίας (of regeneration) καὶ (and) ἀνακαινώσεως (renewing) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), ⁶ οὗ (whom) ἐξέχεεν (He poured out) ἐφ’ (on) ἡμᾶς (us) πλουσίως (richly) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), ⁷ ἵνα (so that), δικαιωθέντες (having been justified) τῇ (-) ἐκείνου (by that) χάριτι (grace), κληρονόμοι (heirs) γενηθῶμεν (we should become) κατ’ (according to) ἐλπίδα (the hope) ζωῆς (of life) αἰωνίου (eternal).

¹⁰ οἵ (who) ποτε (once were) οὐ (not) λαὸς (a people), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) λαὸς (the people) Θεοῦ (of God); οἱ (those) οὐκ (not) ἠλεημένοι (having received mercy), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἐλεηθέντες (having received mercy).

¹⁶ Ἀλλ’ (But) οὐ (not) πάντες (all) ὑπήκουσαν (heeded) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (good news). Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) γὰρ (for) λέγει (says), “Κύριε (Lord), τίς (who) ἐπίστευσεν (has believed) τῇ (the) ἀκοῇ (report) ἡμῶν (of us)?”

⁷ οὗτος (He) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (as) μαρτυρίαν (a witness), ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light), ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) πιστεύσωσιν (might believe) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (him).

³² κἀγὼ (And I), ἐὰν (if) ὑψωθῶ (I am lifted up) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), πάντας (all) ἑλκύσω (will draw) πρὸς (to) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).”

²² δικαιοσύνη (the righteousness) δὲ (now) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (from Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) πιστεύοντας (believing). οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (there is) διαστολή (distinction).

²² ἀλλὰ (but) συνέκλεισεν (imprisoned) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ὑπὸ (under) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise), ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (from Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δοθῇ (might be given) τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing).

⁴ ὃς (who) πάντας (all) ἀνθρώπους (men) θέλει (desires) σωθῆναι (to be saved), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) ἐπίγνωσιν (the knowledge) ἀληθείας (of the truth) ἐλθεῖν (to come). ⁵ Εἷς (One) γὰρ (for) Θεός (God there is), εἷς (one) καὶ (then) μεσίτης (mediator) Θεοῦ (between God) καὶ (and) ἀνθρώπων (men), ἄνθρωπος (the man) Χριστὸς (Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ⁶ ὁ (the One) δοὺς (having given) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἀντίλυτρον (as a ransom) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all), τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) καιροῖς (in proper times) ἰδίοις (their own),

⁴ ἢ (Or) τοῦ (the) πλούτου (riches) τῆς (of the) χρηστότητος (kindness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἀνοχῆς (forbearance), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) μακροθυμίας (patience) καταφρονεῖς (despise you), ἀγνοῶν (not knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) χρηστὸν (kindness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰς (to) μετάνοιάν (repentance) σε (you) ἄγει (leads)?

⁷ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἔχομεν (we have) τὴν (-) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὴν (the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (-) παραπτωμάτων (of trespasses), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

⁷ ἵνα (in order that) ἐνδείξηται (He might show) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) αἰῶσιν (ages) τοῖς (that) ἐπερχομένοις (are coming) τὸ (the) ὑπερβάλλον (surpassing) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) χρηστότητι (kindness) ἐφ’ (toward) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹⁰ ἵνα (so that) γνωρισθῇ (should be made known) νῦν (now) ταῖς (to the) ἀρχαῖς (rulers) καὶ (and) ταῖς (the) ἐξουσίαις (authorities) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church), ἡ (the) πολυποίκιλος (manifold) σοφία (wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹⁶ ἵνα (that) δῷ (He might give) ὑμῖν (you) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δυνάμει (with power), κραταιωθῆναι (to be strengthened) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) ἔσω (inner) ἄνθρωπον (man),

¹⁸ ἵνα (so that) ἐξισχύσητε (you may be fully able) καταλαβέσθαι (to comprehend) σὺν (with) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints) τί (what is) τὸ (the) πλάτος (breadth) καὶ (and) μῆκος (length) καὶ (and) ὕψος (height) καὶ (and) βάθος (depth),

⁷ τίς (Who) γάρ (for) σε (you) διακρίνει (makes different)? τί (What) δὲ (now) ἔχεις (have you) ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔλαβες (you did receive)? εἰ (If) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἔλαβες (you did receive it), τί (why) καυχᾶσαι (boast you) ὡς (as) μὴ (not) λαβών (having received it)?

¹³ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) εἰσενέγκῃς (lead) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation), Ἀλλὰ (but) ῥῦσαι (deliver) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil).’

¹⁴ “Δόξα (Glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest) Θεῷ (to God), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) γῆς (earth) εἰρήνη (peace) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) εὐδοκίας (with whom He is pleased)!”

³⁸ λέγοντες (saying): “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ὁ (-) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).” “Ἐν (In) οὐρανῷ (heaven) εἰρήνη (peace), καὶ (and) δόξα (glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest).”

²⁵ οὐδὲ (nor) ὑπὸ (by) χειρῶν (hands) ἀνθρωπίνων (of men) θεραπεύεται (is He served), προσδεόμενός (as needing) τινος (anything), αὐτὸς (Himself) διδοὺς (giving) πᾶσι (to all) ζωὴν (life) καὶ (and) πνοὴν (breath), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πάντα (all); ²⁶ ἐποίησέν (He made) τε (then) ἐξ (of) ἑνὸς (one), πᾶν (every) ἔθνος (nation) ἀνθρώπων (of men), κατοικεῖν (to dwell) ἐπὶ (upon) παντὸς (all) προσώπου (the face) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), ὁρίσας (having determined) προστεταγμένους (the appointed) καιροὺς (times) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ὁροθεσίας (boundaries) τῆς (of the) κατοικίας (habitation) αὐτῶν (of them),

¹⁰ καὶ (And) κράζουσιν (they were crying out) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), λέγοντες (saying): “Ἡ (-) σωτηρία (Salvation) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), τῷ (the One) καθημένῳ (sitting) ἐπὶ (on) τῷ (the) θρόνῳ (throne), καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) Ἀρνίῳ (Lamb)!”
