³⁵ He was the lamp burning and shining, and you were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.

⁵ At that time were going out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan, ⁶ and confessing their sins, were being baptized by him in the Jordan River. ⁷ But having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

⁷ And as these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man having been dressed in delicate clothing? Behold, those wearing delicate clothing are in kings’ houses. ⁹ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one more excellent than a prophet.

¹¹ Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he!

²⁰ And the one having been sown upon the rocky places, this is the one hearing the word and immediately receiving it with joy. ²¹ And he has in himself no root, but is temporary. And having come tribulation or persecution on account of the word, immediately he falls away.

²⁶ But if we should say, ‘from men,’ we fear the multitude; for all hold John as a prophet.”

²⁰ For Herod was afraid of John, knowing him a righteous and holy man; and he kept him safe. And having heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and heard him gladly.

¹⁵ For he will be great before the Lord. And he shall never drink wine and strong drink, and he will be full of the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb. ¹⁶ And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he will go forth before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

⁷⁶ And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways, ⁷⁷ to give knowledge of salvation to His people, in forgiveness of their sins,

²⁸ I say to you, no one among those born of women is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

⁷ He came as a witness, that he might testify concerning the Light, that all might believe through him. ⁸ He was not the Light, but came that he might witness concerning the Light.

⁶⁶ From that time, many of His disciples departed to the back and no longer walked with Him.

¹⁵ What has become then of your blessedness? For I bear witness to you that, if possible, having gouged out your eyes, you would have given them to me. ¹⁶ So have I become your enemy speaking truth to you?
