¹⁵ For he will be great before the Lord. And he shall never drink wine and strong drink, and he will be full of the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.

⁹ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one more excellent than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he about whom it has been written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’ ¹¹ Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he! ¹² And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens is taken by violence and the violent seize it. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah, the one being about to come. ¹⁵ The one having ears, let him hear! ¹⁶ But to what will I compare this generation? It is like little children sitting in the markets and calling out to others, ¹⁷ saying: ‘We piped for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not wail.’ ¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ ¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold a man, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her deeds.”

²⁸ I say to you, no one among those born of women is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

³³ For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’

³⁵ He was the lamp burning and shining, and you were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.

⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit was giving to them to utter forth.

¹⁴ But Peter, having stood up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke forth to them: “Men of Judea and all those inhabiting Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give heed to my words. ¹⁵ For these are not drunkards as you suppose, for it is the third hour of the day. ¹⁶ But this is that having been spoken by the prophet Joel: ¹⁷ ‘And it will be in the last days, God says, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your elders will dream dreams. ¹⁸ And even upon My servants, and upon My handmaidens, I will pour out of My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
