⁷ And as these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

¹ Now in those days John the Baptist comes, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ² and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.” ³ For this is the one having been spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying, “A voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight His paths.’”

⁵ At that time were going out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan,

²⁵ From where was the baptism of John? From heaven, or from men?” And they were reasoning with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘from heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

³ “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.’” ⁴ John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. ⁵ And all the region of Judea and all of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.

³ And he went into all the region surrounding the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins, ⁴ as it has been written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make His paths straight.’ ⁵ Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low; and the crooked will become into straight, and the rough ways into smooth. ⁶ And all flesh will see the salvation of God.” ⁷ So he was saying to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “Offspring of vipers, who forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?

²⁴ And the messengers of John having departed, He began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What have you gone out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ²⁵ But what have you gone out to see? A man arrayed in fine clothing? Behold, those in splendid clothing and living in luxury are in palaces. ²⁶ But what have you gone out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one more excellent than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he concerning whom it has been written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’ ²⁸ I say to you, no one among those born of women is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” ²⁹ And all the people having heard, even the tax collectors, declared God righteous, having been baptized with the baptism of John. ³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God as to themselves, not having been baptized by him.

¹⁸ Therefore take heed how you hear; for whoever might have, to him will be given; and whoever might not have, even what he seems to have will be taken away from him.”

³⁸ Then Jesus having turned and having beheld them following, says to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to Him, “Rabbi” (which being translated is to say Teacher), “where are You staying?”

³⁵ He was the lamp burning and shining, and you were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.

¹⁷ Thus purposing, therefore then, did I use lightness? Or do I purpose what I purpose according to flesh, so that with me there should be “Yes, yes” and “No, no”? ¹⁸ But God is faithful, that our word to you was not “Yes” and “No.”

¹⁴ so that no longer we might be infants, being tossed by waves and being carried about by every wind of teaching in the cunning, in the craftiness of men with a view to the scheming of deceit.

⁶ But let him ask in faith, doubting nothing, for the one doubting is like a wave of the sea, being blown and being tossed by the wind.
